AAIC: German Translation!

This is the 13th post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 68 days left until release!

Today's topic: the German Translation!

With the first official Western release for Investigations 2 in the Investigations Collection we not only get an English Localisation but also translations into German, French, Korean, Traditional and Simplified Chinese! After so many years of English-only (and sometimes not even Western) releases it's great to see that AA reached such a popularity high in recent years that they translate it into multiple languages again.

I will mainly talk about the German translation as it’s my mother tongue and the language I first played Ace Attorney in. I originally played the German releases of AJ and AA1-3 back on the DS. Apart from being translated they change nothing about the games, names and everything stays the same. So for everyone who doesn’t know, the von Karmas are still German in the German translation which was weird and kinda cool for my teenage self because it’s such a random choice of country for them to be from but I loved seeing it in a game I really enjoyed. Klavier was an even weirder case because the German translation doesn’t change the language he throws in phrases from which is why you don’t really get that part of his character in German except his quirk of calling women „Fräulein“ (which is not a word anyone really uses anymore except mothers when they scold their daughters sometimes). His name is also the only one that’s been changed because „Klavier“ is really just „piano“ in German and therefore very unfitting as a name when the entire game is in that language. (Which is also the reason why I actively pronounce his name differently than what the object is called because just calling him „piano“ feels terrible and I like the way it sounds when I pronounce it differently.) In German he’s Kantilen. Back then I only switched to playing AA in English because Investigations 1 only had an English release in the West. After that I replayed the other games in English as well because I got used to thinking of the characters talking in English and any new releases since then also being English-only reinforced it all the more.

Returning to the present, I finally get the chance to play not only Investigations 1 but also Investigations 2 in German! (DD and SoJ as well but I’m focusing on the Investigations Collection.) It’s been so long that I honestly never thought this in particular would happen, even getting Investigations 2 in English seemed like a distant dream for so long, but here we are! It’s not something that I felt I really needed, as I said I got used to playing AA in English, but now that I know I will have the option I feel weirdly giddy about it! I already mentioned in previous countdown posts that I intend to replay the entire collection immediately to get any achievements that I missed and to try out the arranged music tracks for both games so I'm also going to use this opportunity to play both games in German for the first time after doing the first playthrough in English. So excited to see what the translation is like!

I don't think I even remember what the original German voices sounded like but I look forward to hearing them again and I'm especially excited for the new ones! I hope they're fitting. And I'm curious how they'll translate the special phrases like Shi-Long's "Not so fast!" or Justine's "Overruled!". For Shi-Long's I think "Nicht so schnell!" would easily work the best, it's the 1:1 equivalent, sounds just as natural and takes the same amount of time to say. For Justine's I'm not so sure. I can really only think of "Abgelehnt!" as what a judge would say to overrule an objection but it's not as specific, you can use it for any kind of suggestion or proposal which might make her sound like a really annoying clerk in an office who won't accept your documents in triplicate 😅 On the other hand, that might fit really well in a way, Idk. For Miles' "Eureka!" it's easy again, "Heureka!" is the 1:1 equivalent here.

i love apollo so much, he's an unexpected fave. i don't tend to have the protagonists of a series to be my favorite but my GOSH apollo really just clawed his way up into "character of all time" territory for me; and he's not even the type of character i usually go for, like?? and now he's the standard of the character i enjoy, we love a game-changing king. i see a loud, passionate character and i point "just like apollo jushpich...."

i love that apollo's loud, i love that he's dorky, i love that he's a snappy snarky piece of shit, i love that despite that he's such a target for being bullied, i love that he's just ... him! he has such fun dynamics with everyone, especially with trucy.

Okay yeah so that’s fucking terrifying? Kristoph already doesn’t strike me as the type to have legitimate friends because everyone is a means to an end with him, but- bro that’s not pulling favors that’s mafia boss behavior what the hell.

But like the bigger Thought I have about the whole thing that derails a little from huyandere’s original question is just. The fucking paralells between Simon and Kristoph? Like okay no hear me out actually.

They’re the same character archetype, in a way. They’re both cool, collected, kinda detached loners- arguably the flip side of each other’s coin because where their character wildly diverge is in motive. Kristoph’s whole motive in his story is greed and envy; wanting the fame and fortune others have and feeling like his rightful place in the spotlight is being usurped by people who don’t deserve it Simon on the other hand’s whole motive is undying loyalty to protecting someone he cares about. He’s on deathrow for a crime he didn’t commit, but can we not gloss over the fact that he’s doing so to protect Athena, who, at this point if the story gets spun in her direction, would befall the same faith? That’s -deskslam- why I’m so mad actually that Simon and Klavier don’t interact in Dual Destinies. Like, at all. And that’s a fucking crime because no matter how you spin that their dynamic would be so interesting! Like, would Simon’s similar demeanor freak Klavier out and does their coworkership therefor become kind of strained and uncomfortable? Or are you like me and do you think that Simon takes one look at Klavier and goes “-Markiplier voice- oh he’s traumatized” and instinctively adopts this weird rockstar prosecutor as his brother because eh what’s another adoptive sibling at this point. And in that case does Klavier look at Simon’s behavior and just go “well thats similar to what I was used to anyway so yeah you can stick around.”? Also I’m not done you clicked on this that was your choice entirely it’s even more fascinating to think about Simon and Kristoph spending even one day in the same jail establishment because first of all I feel like Simon would look around that jail cell and just go “show off” and leave it at that. And while I think the fandom has a point in that Simon probably wouldn’t like Kristoph, have we even considered how much Kristoph would fucking loathe Simon? Simon is pretty much the better version of him because Simon has honor and loyalty; things Kristoph definitely lacks. Furthermore with his background in psychology and just the general way he is Simon wouldn’t fall for any of Kristoph’s manipulation tactics, and there’s not much else Kristoph can do because there’s no way in hell that he would win in a physical fight against Simon; the man’s build like a fucking tank come on now. "The rockstar and the the law attorney, now that's a novel I'd loved to read." 295 words

“A rockstar and a defense attorney? That is totally a novel that I’d love to read.” Ema had said it sarcastically, Klavier knew. He knew that writing a novel was ridiculous, writing a novel, especially basing it off of his experiences with Apollo. But he just couldn’t help it, something about Apollo inspired him. Something about him that made Klavier want to be the best he could be at everything he tried. His management team were the first people that mentioned him writing a book, actually. Klavier ignored them at first, he didn’t want to make a piece of art that was just a cash grab, no matter how much his team tried to convince him otherwise. Though, at some point, Klavier had become…inspired. Fiction writing was very much different from songwriting, but Klavier found that he liked it. He liked the creative process in general, and though there was difficulty translating his songwriting skills into fiction writing, plus his perfectionist tendencies making it harder, he still quite liked it. One day, Apollo and Klavier were out at a café. Apollo was talking about novels, and how interesting they were, and that he really should have read more. Klavier wasn’t sure when, but at some point, the words came tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop them. “I’m writing a novel, actually.” Klavier had blurted out. Apollo seemed surprised at first, then that surprise turned into intrigue. “Oh, really? That’s cool! What’s it about?” “A rockstar and a defense attorney solving the murder of the rockstar’s band’s guitarist.” Klavier replied. “Oh! A rockstar and a defense attorney? I’d love to read about that, actually. That must be a pretty interesting duo.” Apollo said. “Ja. They are, Herr Forehead.” Klavier smiled. “They are.”

Klavier really missed songwriting. He missed the creative process of it all, writing away his thoughts as they poured out from his mind, looking at his work days later with a fresh new perspective and then ironing out the kinks that he found. And lately, he had found some inspiration It started with Apollo saying something that sounded like it’d be a good song lyric, to which Klavier immediately jotted down on his phone to remember to integrate it into one of his songs. The next thing he knew, hours later after the investigation had ended, Klavier was writing away at his notebook. He stared at the lyrics that he had just written, frowning in thought. What to write next… At the sound of a notification on Klavier’s phone, he picked it up. Opening his phone, he smiled at the photo of him and Apollo on his lock screen. Apollo was deep in thought, his index finger pressed at the bridge of his nose. Klavier liked that little habit of his, he thought it was one of the most adorable things he had ever seen in his life. He clicked on the notification, an unamused annoyed text from Ema telling him about some investigation details. Klavier quickly responded, before turning back to his notebook. At the possibilities that it held, at the blank canvas that would be his artform. He would probably make a few mistakes, even with years of experience he still made mistakes. Not only that, but this was a solo song, and he wasn’t used to writing solo songs. Though, that didn’t matter. Klavier knew that with his inspiration, he’d make it just fine. It may have been new and a little terrifying, but in Klavier’s opinion, it was the best music that he had ever made.

Apollo did not think he was remarkable. Klavier wasn’t sure what the hell made Apollo come to that conclusion, he really wasn’t. Apollo was one of the most inspiring people in Klavier’s life, his search for the truth one of the most remarkable things about him. He had a talent, able to spot lies with just a person’s body language. He was perceptive, noticing the tiniest of details instantly, before the detectives even registered that they were there. He was detail oriented, putting together all the information of their cases in an interesting and coherent way. So many things that Klavier could go on and on about, so many things he admired about the man. And yet, he seemed to disagree. Which was frankly, ridiculous. “God, I wish I actually knew how to do stuff…” Apollo was lamenting to Klavier. “What do you mean by that, Herr Forehead?” “Well, I sorta uh…don’t have any hobbies? Like sure, I do sports and outdoor stuff, but that’s not as cool as all of your guys’ hobbies.” Apollo sighed. “Mr. Wright can do piano and poker, even if he’s terrible at piano. Ema’s got her whole science thing, Trucy does magic tricks, and you’re a rockstar! Compared to you guys, I don’t have a lot going on.” “Even if you don’t have “anything going on”, you’re still quite talented Herr Forehead.” Klavier said. Apollo didn’t look convinced. “Am I, though? I mean, I’m a defense attorney sure, and I have my tell spotting thing. But other than that, I’m not that talented.” “Well, being a muse requires just as much talent as being an artist.” “I guess…” Apollo trailed off, then realizing something. “Wait, I’m someone’s muse?” Shoot, Klavier let that slip. Apollo took Klavier’s lack of an answer as an answer. “Wait, Prosecutor Gavin, whose muse am I?!” “I have no idea.” And of course, Apollo sensed the lie. “No flipping way you don’t. You know, don’t lie to me.” “…Ja, I know.” “Tell me then.” “Nein.” Apollo frowned. “Why not?” “I want to keep it a surprise.” Klavier teased with a wink. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” Apollo glared at Klavier. “I’m gonna find out, Prosecutor Gavin. You'd think this would come from Kristoph's beta designs but noPe. Makes you wonder who came first in development, was there initally just Klavier and then the idea of a brother came to Capcom within his development? Or was Kristoph first and Capcom initially want Klavier to resemble his brother more? Anyway, I would've loved one of these designs to be used for Kristoph, even in just a flashback or something.

There's not a lot of notable beta designs I found for Kristoph but this doodle is cute. Maybe he wore this during his 7 year period with Phoenix.

I'd expect the design on the left to be for Klavier out of the context. The design on the right reminds me of Jim from The Office.

Vera beta! If you showed me these out of context I couldn't assign them to a character. Interesting to see her wearing nail polish in the right design, makes more sense as to why Kristoph would give her nail polish as a gift. Naturally I imagine the gloves were scrapped early on in development. In both she looks like a daycare attendant rather than an artist.

Well thank you very much, I'm flattered. Sure, I'd be happy to try and share my skin routine with you!

I think one of the main things I began doing a while back with painting skin that's really helped it look more lively is diversifying the colours you can see on it. Adding various warm and cool tones can really help emphasize any shading! I'll use my Klavier and Daryan illustration to show what I mean as I still have a layered version.

Above are the boys with a 50% grey base layer. Notice the hints of blue, red, and yellow about the skin that can't be seen on Daryan's jacket, for example? That is what I'll be referring to!

I'll typically start with basic skin tones for the character (above) and on two separate layers begin to paint on some variations of red, orange and/or yellow (layer 1) and blue, teal, and/or purple (layer 2). I typically already have the opacity on these layers down, but just to kinda show you the types of colours I may use and where I place them, this is the kind of monstrosity I create:

In my experience, Yellow is a good neutral zone addition, Red is great for places with a lot of blood flow like cheeks or fingers, and Blue is good for areas that may not get full exposer to the light source(s). I was first taught a real simple gradient down the face of yellow (brows), red (cheeks/nose), and blue (chin, jawline) for faces. Then as you get more comfortable with slapping them on the canvas, go a little wild with it and start intermingling the colours like adding blue on the eye lids or red on the lips, for example.

For Layer 1, or our warm red/orange/yellow colours, I typically set the layer style to something like a Multiply and lower the opacity to 15-30% depending on the skin tones and image's lighting.

For Layer 2, or our cool blue/teal/purple colours, I do a highlight layer style with Overlay typically being a nice safe pick. For this layer I generally stay around 20-45% opacity. After you have that all set, you'll get something like this:

Which is thankfully not quite as jarring as the other version haha. From here, I start shading normally! I typically use 2-5 shading and highlight layers, depending completely on the lighting of the piece. For skin specifically, I try to keep a smooth gradient or matte look to these areas with a soft brush and blending. Back lighting and colours from the surroundings generally seem to bounce off skin well so I tend to utilise a lot of that too.

In the end I wind up with the top(which I now realise was a pretty bad example image to use as they are in a SPOT LIGHT I'm so sorry) and also added the version without the extra colours for comparison(bottom):

I know it's nothing SUPER noticeable in this piece if you're not looking for it, but that's also the point! It's a little bit of flavour without being a distraction. I've personally really enjoyed the overall look of the skin I've painted since incorporating this.

On the other hand, when it comes my single layer paintings (using my recent painting of Beanix as an example,) I couldn't really tell you my process besides throwing colours at the canvas and seeing what sticks. I still try to incorporate the "sway my colour towards yellow here, change the hue to a bit more blue there," but there isn't much method to my madness outside of that. Just have fun with it!

Favorite thing about them: I know it kind of applies to all the MCs, but he is sooo... cringefail. And I love that about him. Like idk he's just so sweaty and vaguely unwell all the time and I think it's charming that he's constantly convincing himself he's Totally Cool Totally Fine Just Absolutely Fine. I also like that he can't help but be kinda mean. Not that he is a mean character, just that he has the most shit-tier filter when it comes to talking to people. I love how often he says shit he shouldn't to people, it's funny as hell to me. I love him Least favorite thing about them: He's really boring until Spirit of Justice. At least to me personally. He's like cardboard in AJ, and I don't... care about his arc at all in DD lol. Spirit of Justice may have slapped another backstory onto this bitch, and while it's silly, I think it works the best because now at least we have SOME understanding of his background. And I like his dynamics with the Khura'in crew a lot. Favorite line: idk... I don't really pay mind to people's lines. But the bit in Turnabout for Tomorrow where he says he finally trusts Athena is fun. I also like that bit in 6-5: "If you committed a crime, you'd better be ready to do the time. Be you a priest, a saint, a queen or a god." That goes pretty hard. Like bro he fucking rules during Turnabout Revolution it's crazy, he's the star of that trial for sure. The star he should've been in this trilogy all along. brOTP: Him and Athena are iconic together. I like him and Trucy for sure, but Athena really brings out some great stuff in his personality. They are so damn funny together, and you really get the impression they care about each other a lot despite the constant teasing and the rivalry. OTP: I generally don't ship Apollo with anyone because I headcanon him as aroace, but if I was going to pick a ship, I like Justicykes, I admit. I think it could be a cute ship and they already have a terrific dynamic together. But yeah. nOTP: Since I already said Nahyuta/Apollo when I did Yuty's, I guess barring ships like him and Trucy which are a given for me, I don't really care for Klavier/Apollo because I feel they have no chemistry. Like. At all. Like for anything KRKJFN The writing between them in AA4 is so Nothing to me, so idk, I just don't see it. It's not a bad ship and I understand why people like it, but it didn't click with me-- but it probably also didn't click because I don't particularly like Klavier to begin with. I don't think he's very interesting. Random headcanon: Uhhh idk! Let's see... I do headcanon Apollo as a trans man, and since I also headcanon Yuty as trans, I guess like... I like the idea of them playing games as boys when they were kids because they don't have the language or knowledge to understand why neither of them are particularly happy with being viewed as girls, so it was a little secret thing that they encouraged for each other because it made them happy. They understood when no one else did. And then they reunite 15 years later, see the other has transitioned, and thinks, "That explains a lot" lol. Unpopular opinion: His SOJ backstory is stupid as fuck but I actually also think it's great and the best thing they've done with his backstory so far, especially since they have continued to not tell Apollo and Trucy that they're siblings (though yes, I know, the ending of SOJ implies Thalassa and Phoenix are finally going to tell them). It's the first time I had a good grasp on his background, and I think his dynamic with Dhurke, Nahyuta, and Datz is legit great. Song I associate with them: I don't think I've ever thought about it. Everything is Fine by Qbomb could be good for him, but it's also very intense, probably too much even for him. But I'll go with that. Favorite picture of them: I love his grin, it's adorable

Favorite thing about them: Her personality!!! I love how bombastic she is, I love how much emotion they put into her animations and everything. I love how much she cares about people, she's so ride or die and hardworking even when people underestimate her or look down on her. It makes her a really endearing character. I worried if I'd like her when I first started DD, but she's honestly awesome. She's my favorite protag from the new trilogy, though Apollo is not very far behind. Least favorite thing about them: I wish she wasn't so young sometimes. Like I find it weird that the newer games veer so much towards people becoming lawyers fresh out of high school, and even for someone as smart as her, I'm just like... you can't make her 20 at least or something? And I feel like the only reason she's even 18 in DD is because the assistant characters have to be a teen girl. Like. Yknow lol.

I also thought it was kind of annoying how 6-4 kept pushing her being a kid when basically nobody ever talked to her like that before. It felt like they just needed more conflict so threw in suddenly everyone being like "she's just a little BABY GIRL who doesn't KNOW NOTHIN" and I thought it was a touch lame. But not too intrusive, really. At least someone started recognizing she's young as hell, lol. Favorite line: Everything she says is iconic. How am I supposed to pick. Yeah I honestly don't know lol brOTP: Her and Simon are legendary together. Their dynamic is so fuckin funny and endearing to me. It's one of the highlights of DD and the highlight of Turnabout Storyteller. I never knew her and Blackquill were connected before I played DD, albeit I basically never saw anything new trilogy content so it surprised me, but I love them. The siblings of all time OTP: Justicykes, I guess? idk. I don't really ship for her. I'm not even certain what my headcanons for her sexuality are to begin with. I could see her as a lesbian, but I could see her as pan, but I could see her as aro, so on. Her and Juniper is cute too, I just feel like their dynamic isn't fleshed out enough, but that's kinda par for the course in DD. But I can vibe with it. nOTP: Her and Blackquill romantically. Like sorry, but you have fundamentally misunderstood their dynamic. I feel strongly about that. I can't explain it, but it really feels like it misses the point of their dynamic and what makes the dynamic great, but idk. Also it's just Weird for a lot of reasons. Random headcanon: (guy who makes every character he likes trans voice) I Think She's Trans. Also love her being taller than Apollo, I'll go with that hc like the rest of us. Unpopular opinion: I dunno. I think she's a mixed bag to a lot of people because of how DD pivoted so aggressviely away from AA4's vision and direction, which makes it tough for me to determine what an unpopular opinion with her would be, beyond that, like, she really needs her own game. I'd say DD is her game, but we need one where she's in the driver's seat and leading the story on her own. I don't want to see Phoenix or Apollo helping her anymore I'm sick of it KRKF

controversial opinion but i really don't care much for klavier gavin...

i've just finished dual destinies and since that is his last canon appearance that I'm aware of, I felt like this could be the appropriate time for me to talk about him...

so throughout my enjoyment of Apollo Justice, I noticed that every time I was bored/felt that the pacing was dragging was every time klavier was on screen... idk why that is aside from the fact that compared to every prosecutor we've had thus far, whenever we take the prosecutor down a peg, it never feels satisfying with klavier as he is always somehow able to save face. (I'm comparing it to edgeworth, godot. simon, and franziska where the dialogue between them and phoenix is always interesting and satisfying whenever they interact and counter each other)

with apollo, i don't feel their social chemistry if that makes sense?? klavier feels very hot and cold on his treatment of apollo? sure, he lets apollo and trucy investigate crime scenes and let them take evidence but on the trial itself, whenever klavier insults apollo it always feels extremely mean-spirited?? (granted he did get his brother and best friend sent to jail) but unlike edgeworth and phoenix where they play on an almost equal playing field when it comes to insulting each other, it's not the same for apollo.

throughout the game i noticed that apollo always seemed to look up to klavier? apollo's inner monologue always thinks he's cool and seems to hold klavier's opinion of him rather highly?? which makes me feel kinda sad for him especially when klavier insults him in court since apollo almost-to-never fights back on his insults... (it's very rare that he does)

and i honestly dont like that since throughout the game, I noticed that apollo is extremely kind (compared to phoenix anyway) and sensitive (literally cried when he thought trucy was kidnapped/hurt, this was when they just met!) so when he gets poorly treated like that, it really makes me sad and confused...

and im mainly confused because of the fanworks that depict apollo and klavier have a stern-and-sunshine type of dynamic when in the game they really arent?? so far from what I've seen in the game, it's more apollo admiring klavier quietly to himself, with klavier being a bit snobbish but can sometimes be nice to apollo type of deal..

and that makes me feel kinda disappointed since I appreciate fanon klapollo more than the canon one so far... i really wanted to like klavier more but I'm really not sold on his portrayal in canon compared to the fanon version that the fandom gave me...

however the playthrough i watched was the older version of the game and not the remastered one so maybe klavier is much nicer there??? idk hope this analysis thing makes sense...

Who i think some characters’ favourite cat would be:

Apollo: Alderheart (also probably a Jayfeather disliker. Hates Bramblestar with a passion)

Trucy: Briarlight (also originally liked Sparkpelt but after SQH started to dislike her)

Klavier: Nightheart (Also had a Ashfur phase as a teenager, but like, ironically)

Kristoph: Crowfeather but he tells people it’s Darktail or Sol

Maya: Either Dovewing or Ivypool (Squirrelflight is also possible)

Franziska: Leopardstar or Needletail (cried at her death 100%)

Phoenix: Firestar (he hasn’t read the books. All he knows is from Miles and/or Maya)

Miles: either Jayfeather, Gray wing, or Ravenpaw

Larry: Graystripe because he was kin assigned him by Miles as a kid. Miles conveniently keeps silent about the whole silverstream-dying thing so Larry just thinks he’s the cat with all the cool girl cats that like him. If he read the books then he would be a crowfeather defender.
