Haru*Hana Vol 42; Chanyeol’s Interview (Part 1)

"In fact, the very reason why getting into a certain character becomes a challenge is because often times, the roles that are assigned to me are greatly similar to my true personality." The plot surrounding the drana <Missing 9> briefly illustrates a group of affluential artists from an entertainment company "Legend", along with the members of their crew, whom all of which, managed to survive a plane crash only to find themselves stranded on a lonesome island. In the drama, Chanyeol played the role of a maknae, Lee Yeol, of a previously disbanded group, "Dreamers", who is now focusing on his solo activities. Through times of desolation, he displayed his calm and gentle personality, coupled with his positivity, bringing comfort and reassurance to his fellow survivors. Although Chanyeol has previously stated that his personality, when compared to that of Lee Yeol's had a 80% match, ironically, it is that very fact that makes it harder for him to portray the role. Chanyeol: Lee Yeol's character is very cute, even through tough times, he is gentle. I knew the character that i was going to play was similar to myself during the script reading. My biggest concern throughout was that the viewers would think "This is supposed to be Lee Yeol, but why does it feel like Chanyeol?". As a result, i made sure to avoid that by calibrating my actions and script lines carefully, in order to accurately get into the role. Although at times, when i look back at the drama and see Lee Yeol, even i find myself thinking "ah~ that's me". However, having said that, the remaining 20% that i feel like differs me and Lee Yeol when you really analyze it is that even though Lee Yeol is the maknae, he has a very matured sense of thinking. Unlike myself, since i'm rather compulsive. Additionally, i'm not that kind-hearted. Given a situation (stranded on an island) like Lee Yeol, i would freak out. I would tell myself to calm down, but if i'm alone, i'll have trouble doing so. During that time, if there was someone akin to me that told me to relax and that i'll be alright, only then would i be likely to calm down. Thus, this trait of "keeping your composure at times of adversity" become a trait that i would have to learn from Lee Yeol. Question: Your acting almost became an ad-lib (out of script, instinctive) due to the cold!? Chanyeol: The main site for filming was based on a stranded island. Due to this very fact, it gave the whole drama an added touch of reality. However, the forces of nature also added to the hardships and strains faced during filiming, and made it rather difficult. To put that hardship into physical context, being in the wild affected my appetite. It was during the period of winter then, being surrounded by the sea made the already chilling winds seem even colder. One of the hardest scenes to film was the brawl i had with Taeho, that particular scene involved us both getting into the cold waters, which our clothes subsequently absorbed. It chilled us to the point where we felt like we couldn't move. To top it all off, the water was seawater, which stung our eyes. As such, the actions that we originally planned to do, ended up falling through 80% of the time. Instead, it all became instinctive from that point on. However, it was a blessing in disguise as it only served to make our acting appear even more realistic. (He(Chanyeol) laughed as he said that) Being able to withstand the cold on set is only possible thanks to the help of the crew. The laughters, conversations that the casts shared was able to make us all temporarily forget about the cold and bring us "warmth". In fact, Taeho, whom i was involved in a fight with, had actually been one of my closest friends. During the second day of filiming, both of us, including Junho-hyung went back to the hotel room for a conversation that we nearly forgot about the time. After the filiming ended, i even invited the both of them over to my house to have dinner and play games. Till this day, we still maintain a close relationship, and even go out at times.
