Hello everyone, welcome to the start of a new week and the knowledge that the LOOOOOOONGEST month of the year is nearly over! 😂 Here’s a book haul 😜 Gwendy’s Magic Feather is the second book in the Button Box trilogy and although the first and third are written by Stephen King, in Magic Feather he has bowed out and instead writes the foreword. The story is however set in King’s fictional area of Castle Rock in Maine, “a sleepy little town built on a bedrock of deep, dark secrets, which is about to awaken from its quiet slumber once more.” Next up, another book to add to my #britishlibrarytalesoftheweird collection. Heavy Weather promises stories “from the flood myths of Babylon, the Mahabharata and the Bible, to 20th century psychological storms, this foray into troubled waters, heat waves, severe winters, hurricanes, and hailstones offers the perfect read on a rainy day or night.” Finally, we have Lemon, a gorgeous little book translated by Janet Hong, which I’ve had on my radar for some time now. “In the summer of 2002, when Korea is abuzz over hosting the FIFA World Cup, nineteen year old Kim Hae-on is killed in what becomes known as the High School Beauty Murder. But finding the perpetrator is not the main objective here. Instead, the work explores grief and trauma, raising important questions about guilt, retribution, and the meaning of death and life.” I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors, especially if you’ve read or want to read them. Have I tempted you? Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a lovely week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #ohlookmorebooks #booksgloriousbooks #anotherbookhaul #gwendysmagicfeather #stephenking #castlerock #richardchizmar #heavyweathertempestuoustalesofstrangerclimes #kevanmanwaring #lemon #readingtranslatedliterature #kwonyeosun #koreanfiction #janethong #newbookspleaseandthankyou https://www.instagram.com/p/CnxNroULEFW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This short story collection was amazing. Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung & translated by Anton Hur is indeed genre-defying as described on its jacket flap. The stories range from those feeling like folk tales to those that are straight up horror. Sometimes I find it hard to get into short stories because there's not much time to develop characters & settings, but Chung's writing immediately grabbed me. I was in dire need of something to distract me the past couple days & each of these stories fully immersed me in their unique worlds. * There is a lot of the grotesque in here. The first story, The Head, reminds me of a popular history teacher in college who only had classes at 8am to weed out those who weren't really serious about the topic. The beginning of that story may seem bizarre & gross since it starts with a head in a toilet calling out for its mother, but stick with it because you're in for a ride. There is also a lot of loneliness & critique of society in here. * My favorites were The Embodiment (disturbing & yet funny story of a woman needing to find a father for her baby), Cursed Bunny (a cursed lamp that devastates more than intended), The Frozen Finger (a haunting brief journey after a car accident), and Home Sweet Home (a woman buying a disastrous building with her equally disastrous husband with strange results). Highly recommend if you're into strange & yet wonderfully written fiction. * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #pugsandbooks #bookreview #honfordstar #translatedfiction #booksintranslation #koreanbook #koreanfiction #koreanauthor #shortstory #shortstorycollection #koreanshortstories https://www.instagram.com/p/COeI3uRLHCi/?igshid=1nyaqser1iu22

My first completed read for #koreanmarch! As I mentioned, my teen had actually checked this out and red it a while ago, which was enough cause for curiosity to move this one to the top of the stack. I normally don’t read a lot of crime/thrillers, but I did enjoy this. The final showdown made me think this would be amazing adapted as a movie, but overall, the structure of this book is sort of fragmented — different stories that lead into each other, which might be a challenge, adaptation-wise. I enjoyed the characters, and the many meditations on how most people get stuck on a track in their lives, whether that track is assassin, factory worker, prostitute, etc., and how difficult it is to change tracks and imagine a different life for yourself, even if your life is at stake. Or even to be fully aware of the parallel tracks, the different sorts of lives being led all around you. . . Happy to have picked it up. Only a few moments I cringed a bit imagining my teen reading this, but most of them because I thought they were going to go darker than they did. . . #theplotters #unsukim #sorakimrussell #translatedfiction #translatedfromkorean #koreanfiction #crimefiction #bookgeek #minireview #cadl #loveyourlibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/B9jjKT3gpAk/?igshid=qhxj5gkun46

Tower is comprised of interconnected short stories dealing with basic human emotions & drives but set in a strange world. All of the stories take place in a 674-floor building that is its own sovereign nation & often referred to as the Beanstalk. The Beanstalk includes an actor dog that is the most influential person in the building, an elephant that is used to break up protests, & a deep divide between horizontalists & verticalists. But behind these unusual settings, there are stories of jealousy, survival, kindness, & revival of past passions. I enjoyed each of the stories, but thought the appendix was unnecessary (except for maybe the interview with the actor dog). * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #pugsandbooks #bookreview #sciencefiction #translatedfiction # #koreanbook #koreanfiction #koreanauthors #shortstorycollection #honfordstar https://www.instagram.com/p/CN3WX2Er4wo/?igshid=1tk90q6fpp5lv

Hello everyone and welcome to a new week! This week already feels like it’s going to be super busy 😥 but I’m back doing my daily yoga which is really helping. Time to share three special books that were bought for me by @bookishbananna @allthegenres and @clm.readsx as part of an RAOK day hosted by @abrewandabook_ Spin The Dawn is the first book in The Blood Of Stars series. It follows a girl called Maia who dreams of becoming the best tailor in the land but bring a girl, the most she can hope for is to marry well. Then a royal messenger calls her ailing father to court. Seizing her opportunity, Maia dresses as a man and goes in her father’s place to the Summer Palace to compete for the Emperor’s favour and the coveted position of imperial tailor. Yet nothing could have prepared her for the challenge ahead - to sew three magical gowns for the emperor’s bride to be. One from the laughter of the sun, one from the tears of the moon and one from the blood of the stars. The second book, Love In The Big City is translated fiction from @tiltedaxispress described as a fresh and unique debut novel from the bestselling young star of queer Korean fiction. It is an energetic, moving and joyful novel that depicts both the glittering night time world of Seoul and the bleary eyed morning after. Finally, we have a Jodi Picoult novel, The Book Of Two Ways. I used to be a big fan of this author and I’m hoping to get back into her work. This novel follows Dawn Edelstein whose life changes in a single moment. She’s on a place when a flight attendant makes an announcement to prepare for a crash landing. The man who enters her mind is not her husband but a man she hasn’t seen for 15 years. Dawn survives the crash but so do all her doubts. She must now choose between her life with her husband or a life that she could have lived. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Have a great week everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookworm #bookstagrammer #bookhaul #generousbookworms #spinthedawn #thebloodofstars #elizabethlim #loveinthebigcity #sangyoungpark #translatedfiction #koreanfiction #antonhur #thebookoftwoways #jodipicoult https://www.instagram.com/p/CbYJmIhr9fS/?utm_medium=tumblr

I just finished this yesterday and I am still pondering it. The beginning was absolutely fascinating, about Bari, the seventh daughter in a family in North Korea in the 1990s, as the economy slows down, grinds to a halt, then explodes into chaos — scapegoating, famine, and fire, with the death of their leader. It’s a story of emigration, suffering, and survival, wrapped up with and told through the lens of an old Korean legend of Princess Bari — who is discarded but goes on an epic journey to find the life-giving water that will end suffering and set everything right. . . I am processing the ending, which was a bit abrupt, but I did appreciate and take to heart much of what the book said about immigration and fear and the things we let divide us. . . #princessbari #hwangsokyong #koreanfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ic8YJAqgo/?igshid=126knqt9wp402
