I live in a post-Magneto world and I'm better off for it. Three variations of the same patch.
Jamuary was a bit of a flop this year for me. Life is so busy, the world is so *gestures vaguely*, I've taken on new responsibilities between my nonprofit and the cat, and on top of all that SAD hit me like never before. I'm honestly surprised that I got 14 out.
As things (hopefully) improve somewhat, I do want to record more. I've been getting lots of small practice in on the XY, and re-re-planning a lot of modular things, and been so motivated to play more.
I've made the first part of a larger spread of changes to the synth case. This patch is exploring those, using Nibbler for a lot of rhythm sequencing/performability and DLD for texture. I was concerned with it having such little character on its own, but with some careful choice of the envelope feeding into it, I find it already gives a good amount of space coupled with Prism. I may not need a dedicated reverb after all. The third of these jams (recorded first) used the Korg NTS-1 for reverb and delay but I didn't feel they were necessary - nor was Daiko, the inherent rhythm is enough to make the patch feel coherent.
I'm looking forward to getting to know the changes thus far a bit better to finalize those in the works. Meanwhile, the other two cases I'm finding very solid and well-rounded already. Good work me.

**The Ultimate Guide to Producing Hip Hop Music: Hardware and Software Essentials**
As a hip hop producer, you’re about to embark on a journey to create the next big hit. To get started, familiarize yourself with the hardware and software tools used in the production process. In this comprehensive guide, we will cover the essential hardware and software tools, as well as provide tips on how to combine them to produce high-quality hip hop and rap tracks.
---
### **1. Hardware Essentials**
**1.1 MPCs (Akai Pro MPC Series)**
The MPC (Music Production Center) is a legendary sampler and sequencer that has been a staple in hip hop production for decades. The Akai Pro MPC series, including models like the MPC X, MPC Live, and MPC One, offer a myriad of features such as sampling, sequencing, and effects processing. These devices allow producers to create intricate beats and seamlessly blend samples with original material. **Tip**: Experiment with different sampling techniques to find your unique sound.
**1.2 Groove Boxes (Korg Electribe, Roland SP-404, etc.)**
Groove boxes are compact and portable devices designed for creating beats, sequences, and samples on the go. Popular choices among hip hop producers include the Korg Electribe and Roland SP-404. These devices often come with built-in sounds and effects, making them perfect for live performances or quick jam sessions. **Tip**: Use groove boxes for sketching out ideas quickly when inspiration strikes.
**1.3 Drum Machines (Roland TR-808, TR-909, etc.)**
Drum machines are fundamental tools within hip hop production. The Roland TR-808 and TR-909 are iconic machines that have appeared in countless hit tracks. Their distinct sounds can give your beats that classic hip hop flavor. **Tip**: Layer different drum sounds and tweak their envelopes to create a punchier kick or snappier snare.
**1.4 Turntables and Vinyl**
Vinyl records and turntables remain an essential component of hip hop culture. Many producers use turntables to sample and scratch records, adding a unique rhythmic element to their tracks. **Tip**: Explore various genres of vinyl records for sampling; sometimes unexpected sounds can lead to unique beats.
**1.5 MIDI Controllers (Native Instruments Maschine, Novation Launchpad, etc.)**
MIDI controllers provide a hands-on approach to controlling virtual instruments and effects in your DAW. Devices like the Native Instruments Maschine and Novation Launchpad are popular among hip hop producers for their versatility. **Tip**: Utilize pads for finger drumming to capture a more organic feel in your beats.
---
### **2. Software Essentials**
**2.1 DAWs (Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, etc.)**
Your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is the heart of your production setup. Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro are three of the most popular DAWs used in hip hop production. Each DAW has its strengths; for instance, Ableton Live is favored for its session view for live performances, while FL Studio is known for its intuitive interface and powerful step sequencer. **Tip**: Take advantage of the built-in tutorials and communities surrounding each DAW to enhance your workflow.
**2.2 Virtual Instruments (Native Instruments Kontakt, Serum, etc.)**
Virtual instruments provide an expansive palette of sounds for hip hop production. Software like Native Instruments Kontakt and Serum allows you to design and manipulate sounds, offering endless creative possibilities. **Tip**: Incorporate sound design techniques to craft unique sounds that set your tracks apart.
**2.3 Effects Plugins (iZotope Ozone, Waves, FabFilter, etc.)**
Adding effects and processing to your tracks is crucial for achieving a professional sound. Plugins from iZotope Ozone, Waves, and FabFilter offer tools for mixing and mastering your music. From EQs and compressors to reverb and delay, these plugins can help you shape your sound effectively. **Tip**: Use reference tracks to guide your mixing choices and ensure your sound fits within the genre.
---
### **3. Combining Hardware and Software**
The key to successful hip hop production lies in effectively combining your hardware and software. Here are some tips on how to do this:
- **Integration**: Connect your hardware instruments to your DAW via MIDI or audio interfaces for seamless interaction. This allows you to trigger sounds from your hardware while recording in the software.
- **Layering Sounds**: Utilize hardware samplers like the MPC to create base beats, and then enhance those beats using virtual instruments or effects within your DAW.
- **Live Performance**: Incorporate groove boxes or MIDI controllers during live performances to engage your audience and add spontaneity to your set. This can create a unique atmosphere and make each performance special.
- **Experimentation**: Don't be afraid to mix and match hardware and software. Use a MIDI keyboard to play samples from your MPC, or sample your virtual instruments on your groove box. The possibilities are endless.
---
By understanding and utilizing the right hardware and software tools, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the world of hip hop music production. Remember, the most important aspect is to experiment, find your unique voice, and have fun while crafting your beats. Now go create your next big hit!

(I'm a little out of it from taking my sleeping meds before launching into this patch, so you've been warned as to potential quality.)
The inspiration for this was hearing a Make Noise video which used a Maths channel running at audio speeds to hard sync another oscillator module. I don't have either of those, though, so here's it's a Voxmachina Sigma set to hard or soft sync (I switch a few times) the VCO 3340. The Sigma, the VCO, and the filter are all modulated by the S&H; the filter is also modulated by the second Sigma, which is gated by the S&H's clock.
All this is combined with a Korg Monotron Delay, which is set up as a continuous drone by the simple method of holding a pencil eraser down on the ribbon with a rubber band. Its LFO is set to a slow square wave so it periodically switches the drone note.
These are mixed together and put through the DSPFX for stereo delay/echo, and all recorded to my Tascam field recorder.

Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder is a 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Taika Waititi, who wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Keiten Robinson, and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor alongside Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jamie Alexander, Waititi, Russell Crowe and Natalie Portman. In the film, Thor tries to find inner peace, but must return to action and recruit Valkyrie (Thompson), Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster (Portman) — who is now the mighty Thor — to stop Gor the God Butcher (Bell). ) from eliminating all the gods.
Hemsworth and Waititi discussed plans for a Ragnarok sequel by January 2018. Love and Thunder was announced in July 2019, with Hemsworth, Waititi and Thompson all returning, as well as Portman who did not appear in Ragnarok. Waititi wanted to separate Love and Thunder from Ragnarok, creating a romance film and 1980s-inspired adventure. He adapted elements of Jason Aaron's run in the 2010s Thor comic books, which similarly debuted Gor and saw Foster take on Thor's mantle and powers while undergoing cancer treatment. In February 2020, Robinson joined to contribute to the script, and further casting was announced later that year, including an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy. Production was expected to begin in late 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming finally began in January 2021 in Sydney, Australia with Barry Idoin as director of photography and finished in early June.
Thor: Love and Thunder premiered at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood on June 23, 2022, in Los Angeles and was released in the United States on July 8 as part of the MCU's fourth season. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the film for its light-heartedness, action sequences, and performances by Hemsworth, Bale, and Portman, but criticized the screenplay and tonal inconsistencies; Although its humor and visual impact were met with polarized reactions,[6] many critics considered the film inferior to Ragnarok. Love and Thunder grossed $760.9 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2022.

Monday, February 17, 2025: Corduroy Institute creates an improvised layer of melodic content for Jam 5 of Corduroy 75. This marked our first recording of multitracked musical material since the summer of 2023. Today, a video document of this event is available with the title "The Number Seventy Five Song in Heaven - Corduroy 75 Jam 5 Layer 2."
youtube
For his synth work, W. Ruiz turned to the Roland V-Synth rather than to the Ensoniq EPS 16 Plus. He located a patch called PERSIANAS. Its basic sound consists of a sample of the Korg Monologue with shimmer reverb from Corduroy Institute's second song, "Youth." This sample is frequency modulated by a drum loop recorded at a local rehearsal space in late 2019.

S.A. Morin's melodic contribution involved returning to the Bass VI but processing it with the Electro-Harmonix Mel9 pedal. He chose the High Choir setting, one of the unit's more infrequently used Mellotron colorations. His signal chain also involved using the NUX Atlantic for both delay and reverb.

With our instruments ready and four cameras poised to capture the performance, we began the improvisation. A sort of call and response pattern developed between the previous layer's Squier Jazz Bass, the Bass VI-Mel9, and the V-Synth. Eventually the pattern broke and freeform improv took over.
W. Ruiz took advantage of the V-Synth's control surface by mainly manually modulating the FM amount while also occasionally reaching for the D-Beam and Time Trip pad controls. S. A. Morin, for his part, went on to surmise that he himself "kinda lost it there."
Full video available now.

Exploring Paralogy: A Free Synth from Full Bucket Music
In the ever-expanding universe of software synthesizers, Full Bucket Music has once again delivered a gem for vintage synth enthusiasts. Paralogy is a faithful emulation of the Crumar Trilogy Orchestra, a paraphonic analog hybrid synth from the early ‘80s. If you’re into lush strings, classic organ sounds, and warm synth textures, this free plug-in is worth a deep dive.
A Vintage Classic Reimagined
The original Crumar Trilogy Orchestra was a six-voice analog hybrid synth featuring three distinct sections:
Synth (fully-featured with two oscillators)
String (simple but rich)
Organ (pure vintage character)
Its sibling, the Crumar Stratus, was a simplified version that omitted the string section and memory storage. Paralogy combines the best of both while introducing modern enhancements like built-in phaser and delay effects.
Sound Engine & Features
The synth engine in Paralogy stays true to its hardware inspiration, offering:
Two VCOs with sawtooth and square waveforms
Switchable waveforms based on key release
2-pole and 4-pole 24dB lowpass filter
LFO with triangle, saw, and mix waveforms
Ramp and ADSR envelope generator
Fully paraphonic architecture
Advanced Phaser and Delay effects
Resizable UI and MIDI Learn for full parameter control
My Hands-On Experience
I took Paralogy for a spin in my latest video, testing a variety of factory presets before crafting my own custom sound from scratch. The goal? A lush, vintage-style pad reminiscent of the Korg Trident—and Paralogy delivered. The filter section is incredibly smooth, and the paraphonic nature adds a unique character to the sound, making it great for evolving textures and cinematic ambiances.
Performance & Availability
One of the best things about Paralogy is how efficient it is. Written in native C++, it runs with low CPU consumption, making it an excellent addition to any setup. It’s available for Windows & macOS in VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP formats—fully compatible with modern DAWs.
Final Thoughts
For a free synth, Paralogy is nothing short of incredible. Whether you’re an ambient producer, a synthwave enthusiast, or just love vintage textures, this is a must-have. Check out my video to hear it in action and let me know what you think!

Yulatraktors – Solstice Wyrd - an alternative seasonal album from Lunatraktors
Peel back the colourful paper — the enforced gaiety and extravagance of a consumerist Christmas, or the vestiges of Christianity — and there’s something very different underneath. For many people, the holiday season is burdened by unwelcome emotions. Anxiety, grief and loneliness feel all the more overwhelming because there’s an assumption that ‘negativity’ shouldn’t be shared. Lunatraktors believe we should stop shutting out the shadows. Holly, ivy and fir trees, wreaths, fires and mistletoe: these things go back a long, long way. There’s a reason Christmas used to be a time to tell ghost stories. Yule is the dark heart of the year, the midwinter solstice and the longest night. Let’s go out into the night, let’s free our feral selves to howl our pain and defiance, to dance in the frozen moonlight and the flickering of the fire. We call our music ‘broken folk’ — it’s folk music for queers and lunatics, misfits and nonconformists. People exiled from family, society or homeland, with little patience for nationalistic fantasies of the pure tradition. A pagan rave where all are welcome, the weirder the better. Lunatraktors explores tradition as a folding or layering of time: present troubles echoing through history, and pre-figuring events in the future. A haunted landscape, where psychic patterns from past eras are unceasingly dug up and re-buried. Icons are hacked down and half-forgotten, only to sprout from the ground again decades or centuries later. This is the Wyrd of the British Isles, the twisted knot of fate. Anachronism as folk horror. Now in its sixth year, the project is only getting deeper and weirder. Yulatraktors explores a crop of popular carols that — beneath their veneer of Christian doggerel — dance to a different beat. There’s something pulsing through Good King Wenceslas and God Rest You Merry Gentlemen that has very little to do with piety, an echo of their origins in mediaeval folk dance tunes. In 2022, from their new base in Ireland, we put together a 44 minute recording and video for the solstice, building up layers of full-take improvisations onto a heavy DJ set with Zen Delay and Moog Subharmonicon, an unusual polyrhythm synth based on the subharmonic series. In 2023, we remixed the recording, adding samples from live Yulatraktors shows at the Tom Thumb. The result is a psychedelic take on Yuletide ‘like Mike Oldfield on ketamine’. Solstice Wyrd is due to be released on 12.12.23, St. Lucy’s Eve, and is best listened to in the dark. Carli: Vocals, Frame Drum, Tuned percussion, RAV Vast, Moog Subharmonicon, Zen Delay, Chimes, Shakers, Singing Bowl, Ayoyotes, Gong, Hooves, Jingle Bells Clair: Vocals, Rhodes, Moog Subharmonicon, Zen Delay, Korg Monologue, Lyre Harp, Low Whistle, D Whistle, Duduk, Bass Accordion
