Henry IV, pt I 1990s-radio-station AU in which Falstaff is the world’s laziest DJ, who hangs onto his job partly because Hal the station manager thinks he’s funny, but also because his show runs from two to six a.m., and the people who bother tuning in at that time of night are ones who actually like the stuff he plays. The station keeps getting letters from Kraftwerk fans who thank him for regularly playing the full-length version of ‘Autobahn.’

Actually, Falstaff’s only ever listened to the opening and closing bars of the track, he just knows that if he puts it on he has twenty minutes to go smoke a joint with the clerk of the convenience store across the street. The other reason he’s popular enough to not get cancelled is that he is genuinely funny and even kind of insightful when he’s stoned at 3am.

you'll be shocked to learn that all their tastes are based on my own.

to me eddy is a big Music Enjoyer™ and i think he goes through phases, but his overall taste is expansive. he's is obviously into disco - abba, sylvester, bee gees, EWF, kool and the gang, barry white. i see him enjoying old funk/soul/r&b - bootsy collins, the gap band, chaka khan, curtis mayfield, patrice rushen. pop/country oldies - nancy sinatra, dusty springfield, patsy cline, brenda lee, peggy lee, loretta lynn. 40s, 50s & 60s girl groups cuz that's what his mom likes- andrews sisters, mcguire sisters, ronettes, marvelettes, etc. 80s dance - the egyptian lover, pretty tony, debbie deb, newcleus, loose ends, madonna. 90s house and dance - crystal waters, la bouche, lisa stansfield, robin s, real mccoy. other 90s pop - aaliyah, britney, sugar ray, backstreet boys, nsync, aqua, smash mouth ace of base, TLC, destiny's child. a touch of ska with sublime, 311. other random stuff - fatboy slim, louis prima, azalea banks, limp bikit, shaggy, dua lipa (gay), the prodigy. there's so much more honestly but basically anything i like is what eddy likes 😳 he's like the catch all haha.

edd also loves music but i tend to think of stuff that reminds me of him vs. what he would actually listen to. crystal castles to me is edd music because i'm gay and emo but i don't think he'd really listen to them outside of the gothedd au that exists only in my head lmao. things i do think he'd listen to include kraftwerk, aphex twin, boards of canada, daft punk, massive attack, agnes obel, avalanches, burial. most of which he discovers through eddy of course. some outliers might be tool, muse, enya, anita baker (don't ask ok). there's other stuff i'm sure but that's probably enough for now.

ed is harder for me to nail down cuz i see him as mostly a rock/metal fan and even though i grew up listening to it, i've never gone super deep into the genre tbh. his favorite bands are primus and death grips. others would be alice in chains, nirvana, SOAD, melvins, butthole surfers, smashing pumpkins, black sabbath, metallica, rob zombie/white zombie. he might be into other 80s metal, black metal, sludge metal. none of which are anything i listen to so i couldn't tell ya what artists.

Die faszinierend effiziente Mensch-Maschine-Zusammenarbeit der Packstationsbeladung

Ich nutze die gelbe Packstation nur sehr selten, aber weil ich die Versandkostenflatrate des dominierenden Onlinehandelskonzerns mit gekoppeltem Videostreaming kürzlich wegen der Einführung von Werbung dort gekündigt habe, bestelle ich wieder verstärkt in Abholstationen. Denn auch ohne die Versandkostenflatrate kann man sehr viele Dinge ohne Versandkosten bestellen, wenn man sie in eine der Locker genannten eigenen Abholstationen des Anbieters liefern lässt. Und wie sich herausstellt, gilt das auch für allerlei andere Abholpunkte hier in der Gegend, was mir gerade gelegen kommt, den der eine Locker, den man noch ohne die App des Anbieters mit einem simplen per E-Mail erhaltenen Zahlencode öffnen kann, ist gerade außer Betrieb.

Nun stehe ich also an der gelben Packstation, um ein Paket abzuholen und sehe fasziniert dem Liefermenschen dabei zu, wie er eine Sackkarre voller Pakete auf die Fächer verteilt. Der Workflow dafür funktioniert folgendermaßen: Die Station hat jeweils eine Tür pro Fachgröße offen stehen. Der Bestücker nimmt nun das nächste Paket, hält es kurz vor den Barcodescanner an der Bedieneinheit bis diese einen Quittungston von sich gibt. Nach einem kurzen Kontrollblick auf den Bildschirm stellt er nun das Paket in das kleinste noch passende Fach und schließt dessen Tür. Sofort springt ein anderes Fach dieser Größe auf und es ist Zeit für das nächste Paket. Das geht dermaßen rasend schnell von der Hand, dass die ganze Sackkarre mit ihren etwa 15 Paketen verschiedener Größen in wenigen Minuten eingeräumt ist. Der Trick mit den mehreren offenen Fächern verschiedener Größe ist eigentlich naheliegend, aber er bereitet mir große Freude, weil da offensichtlich eine Person mal ordentlich drüber nachgedacht hat, wie sich diese Mensch-Maschine-Zusammenarbeit so gestalten lässt, dass sie möglichst schnell, fehlerfrei und wenig nervig abläuft. Wenn das mal überall der Fall wäre, denke ich so bei mir und in meinem Kopf spielt Kraftwerks Mensch-Maschine, das mit guten Kopfhörern übrigens noch fantastischer ist, also sowieso schon.

Kurz denke ich dann, dass ich jetzt an der Reihe bin, aber es geht natürlich noch ans Ausräumen der in die Station eingelieferten Pakete. Das läuft sehr ähnlich ab: Ein Fach springt auf und der Bote piepst das entnommene Paket kurz am Scanner der Bedieneinheit ein, bevor es auf die Sackkarre kommt. Auch hier muss ich lange warten, bevor ich den Abhol-Barcode aus der App vor den Scanner halte, was hier – anders als an den Terminals der einen großen Fastfoodkette – auf Anhieb funktioniert.

P.S. Ich bin Werbung und die dahinterstehende Branche so satt, dass ich mich fast überall, wo es geht, von Werbung freikaufe. Das wäre für zusätzliche drei Euro im Monat auch beim erwähnten Videostreamingdienst mit gekoppelter Versandkostenflatrate machbar, aber ich schleppe ohnehin schon lange die ungute Gewissheit mit mir herum, dass dieser Laden aus mehreren guten Gründen zu meiden ist, und das Videostreaming wird bei uns in der Familie wegen des eher zusammengewürfelten Programms ohnehin kaum noch genutzt.

25. Midsummer this is my attempt to fit aruani into my grad school au, bear with me

Something that Annie appreciates about Armin is his willingness to plan, specifically how it compliments her willingness to not. Sometimes his habit pertains to where they'll be going on their bi-weekly date nights or what on the list for this month's Costco haul, but tonight he's doing something much different.

A Kraftwerk vinyl spins on a turntable, allowing music to fill their Halifax apartment. Annie sits in the main living space, remaining on the couch while hunched over her laptop. She's typing madly as she puts an effort towards that whole "Master's degree" thing she set out to get. As she organizes a spreadsheet of data that never fucking ends, she can practically envision the way that Armin's sitting behind her, the manner of which he sits at his desktop and fawns over what he sees on the monitor — that being the most aesthetically pleasing photos of Montreal that one can find.

As of lately he had been particularly enamoured with the city's ferris wheel, yet unwilling to actually say the phrase 'La Grande roue de Montréal.'

For a person as well-travelled as Armin, the fact that he hadn't been to her hometown had surprised Annie. He's spent extensive time on both of Canada's coasts, yet he's never been to the second-most populous city? Judging by how much time he had spent researching the City of Saints, she guesses that the temptation to cross it off his list is rushing through his veins.

"Should I just book it?" he asks. The giddiness and excitement in his voice is extremely palpable.

It's barely into March and he's already been planning what they'll do in the summer. It helps that Annie might — emphasis on might — be able to get some time off in July. It depends on how the physics department feels about letting one of their disposable grad students run free for a week, but it had been enough to convince Armin to start browsing ticket packages.

His enthusiasm when brainstorming potential getaway ideas does make her wonder if his own department — that being the one that studies all the beautiful ways the oceans are dying — is willing to loosen the leash on him as well.

With that in mind, Annie's replies, "You better." She speaks with her usual dryness. "You've only been drooling over that deal for a week."

Truth be told Annie's not averse to visiting home, despite all the years she spent far from it. Even if she's not sure how many of her old Concordia classmates are still kicking about, she wouldn't mind giving the place a visit. When she glances behind her she sees Armin with a boyish smile on his face, then when she turns back to her laptop she only types for a few second before hearing the sharp click of his mouse.

"Alright, I did it!" Armin announces, a chipper flavour to his tone. "We are Montreal bound this July."

Annie nods and stands from the couch. She goes to the kitchen of their apartment, even through the doorway she is able to spot Armin at his desktop as she rummages through the fridge.

"I've never seen you so stoked to be far from the ocean," she remarks.

Some of the details still haven't been specified yet, but she's sure that they'll iron things out later. Perhaps she can bully Pieck into being their house-sitter/plant-waterer for their midsummer getaway. Additionally, she recalls Armin mentioning something about a childhood friend of his currently studying at McGill, because all disposable grad students seem to know one another. It would be foolhardy to assume that no time on this trip will be spent with them, though Annie can't exactly remember their name.

Armin turns in his swivel chair, leaning back as he shrugs. "They got a river there, right?"

Annie rolls her eyes. "Right." She grabs a can of seltzer for herself, and when she glances to Armin she sees him raising his hand, wordlessly requesting one for himself.

Annie doesn't hesitate to toss a can his way. To this day they're both surprised that their little seltzer-tossing tendency has not led to a broken window and them losing their safety deposit.

"You better brush up on your French then, mon cherie," Annie says, partially joking but partially serious.

Armin meets her gaze with a more wary expression in his eyes. It seems that despite all the time he had spent learning about a mostly Francophone city, he had neglected to consider that whole "actually speaking French" part.

"Of course!" he insists. "Uh... merci beacoup?"

Annie smirks just as she opens her can. "Nailed it."

God, The Model/Das Model by Kraftwerk just makes this whole AU pop up in my head where its 1992 and Johnnys a burnt out session musician who never got his own band off the ground. And hes in some studio, hes supposed to be writing backing guitar to some advert, but theres all these porn magazines laying around. And hes flipping through them idly, more than a bit high, and his whole world just crashes to a halt cause there in the centerfold is this pretty boy with big blue eyes, staring up at the camera so innocently. As if he'd just accidentally stumbled onto the bed and tastefully covered himself up with a sheer white sheet.

And Johnny cant shake it. He starts tearing through every magazine, taking every picture of this boy he can find. He finds a short article that says his name is Steven, Steven Morrissey. That he likes cats and hot tea and books. And he advocates celibacy despite his chosen career.

Johnny gets a little off tilt about it all. He knows it. He cant get through his day without looking at him. Hes so picturesque. Every sharp line of his face makes his heart race. Theres no pictures he can find of him completely undressed and uncovered, but theres one of him playfully kneeling in bed and looking over his shoulder at the camera where you can see the full curve of his arse and Johnny spends too much time touching himself to it.

He begins to try and subtly ask around, in a way that doesnt seem too obsessed, about where this guy might live. He starts with ringing up a friend at photography studio, he ends up with the number of an agent that works with some of these more softcore mags. The guy says he'd be happy to set up a private meeting for a reasonable price of £5,000 and Johnny immediately says yes and goes to sell one of his guitars to write the cheque.

And when he arrives in Camden he knows he should go back. He's too invested. He's spent weeks fantasizing about this boy who doesnt know him. He'll be a total stranger to him, just some weirdo who likes to get off to his photos. But Johnny can't help himself. He catches a cab to the flat they're arranged to meet at and knocks on the door until a well built guy with a closely shaved crew cut answers the door. He says his name is Jake and he'll be present for the entire meeting, and that Johnny isn't allowed to touch Steven without getting permission from him first.

Johnny thinks thats a bit much but he nods and gets walked down a hallway till he comes into a well decorated living room and there he is. Steven. Sitting politely in a chair by a large glass pane window, looking perfectly serene. Johnny isnt sure if he can move any closer, hes absolutely captivated by him and when those blue eyes turn to him Johnny can feel it. Its like the pull of gravity. The feel of something otherworldly. Like a strange cosmic force that manipulated the course of destiny to get them both in this room. And Steven stands up, graceful and poised, and touches his cheek. Touches his neck, his shoulder. Staring at him like he's a phantom.

Südafrika 2022/23 - Tag 31

Herrschaften und Oukies!

Unser Urlaub geht zu Ende und unsere Geduld mit dem elendigen Loadshedding ebenfalls. Aktuell sollen ein Duzend Kraftwerke außer Betrieb sein. Stage 6 mit Stromabschaltungen bis zu 12 Stunden täglich ist jetzt die neue Norm - bis auf weiteres ...

Heute Nacht ist dann auch in unserer Unterkunft das Backup-System in die Knie gegangen, ab 4 Uhr waren dann der Strom komplett weg. Da mussten sich die Batterien erst einmal wieder per Solar aufladen. 

Unsere Vorräte neigen sich ebenfalls dem Ende zu. Nochmal Lebensmittel einkaufen lohnt für die “paar Stunden”, die wir noch hier sind, überhaupt nicht.

Da kamen wir auf die tolle Idee zum Rietvlei Coffee Shop zum Frühstück zu fahren. Der besagte Coffee Shop liegt im gleichnamigen Rietvlei Naturreservat südlich von Pretoria.

Als wir los fuhren kamen wir erst einmal gar nicht aus dem Tor raus, weil das ja - richtig erkannt - elektrisch funktioniert. Da musste einer der Hausangestellten manuell zur Hilfe eilen.

Um es vorweg zu nehmen, das war eine der (positiven) Überraschungen des ganzen Urlaubs. Aus unserem geplanten Besuch zum Frühstück wurde ein Ganztagesausflug.

Das Naturreservat ist etwa 4.000 Hektar (40 qkm) groß und umfasst den gesamten Rietvlei Staudamm, der den Rietvlei Fluss staut. Das Rietvlei Reservat ist zwischen der Autobahn R 21 (OR Tambo Airport Highway) auf der Westseite und der R 50 ( Delmas - Bapsfontein ) im Nordosten eingeklemmt. 

Etwa 400 Vogelarten nutzen das Reservat, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes “Ein Paradies für Birder”. 

Mehrere Bird Hides erleichtern die “Jagd” nach den gefiederten Gesellen.  

Einige davon sind auch mit Toiletten ausgestattet:

Besonders erfreuten uns die zur Familie der Webervögel gehörenden langschwänzigen Widowbirds.

Nur zur Balz legen sie dieses tolle Prachtkleid an und tanzen in der Luft, um die potentiellen Gegner und natürlich die Damenwelt zu beeindrucken.

Wir konnten uns gar nicht satt sehen, da wir dieses “Tanztheater” jetzt zum allerersten Mal sehen durften.

Das Reservat beherbergt aber auch rund 1.600 einzelne große Säugetiere.

Geparden, Blessböcke, Weißschwanzgnus, Kuhantilopen, Elandantilopen, Steppenzebras, Wasserböcke, Riedböcke, Steinböcke , Grauducker, Büffel und Flusspferde können alle im Reservat gefunden werden. 

Die Geschichte des Rietvlei Reservates reicht nahezu unglaubliche 200 Jahre zurück. 

Bezeugen können die Historie die uralten Eichen, die noch immer um das alte Farmhaus, dem heutigen Coffee Shop, stehen. 

Heute stehen darunter, im kühlen Schatten, die Bestuhlungen für die Gäste. Hier lässt es sich auch bei großer Hitze gut aushalten. 

Die Vögel sind natürlich sehr an den Speisen interessiert, so, wie dieser Drongo hier, der immer näher rückte.

Im Dezember 1836 erreichten die ersten Voortrekker unter der Führung von Andries Hendrik Potgieter das Gebiet, das heute als Rietvlei bekannt ist. 

Daniel Elardus Erasmus war einer der Voortrekker in dieser Gruppe und war als „Doringkloof“ Erasmus bekannt.

Er heiratete 1841 und wurde im September eingetragener Eigentümer der Rietvlei-Farm. 

Nach seinem Tod hinterließ er den Hof seinen beiden Söhnen, die nördliche Hälfte Stephanus Petrus Erasmus und die südliche Hälfte Michael Christiaan Elardus Erasmus.

Stephanus Petrus Erasmus „Swart lawaai“ und seine Frau Anna Catharina erbauten das historische Gehöft zwischen 1875 und 1904. Hier führten sie das Erbe der Viehzucht der Familie Erasmus fort. 

Das Haus und die Farm, heute bekannt als Rietvallei, wurden 1912 an Donald Mackay Munro (geboren am 16. Februar 1872 in Faro, Bettyhill, an der Nordküste Schottlands) und seine Frau Ann Galbraith Murdoch, ebenfalls ursprünglich aus Schottland, verkauft. Sie hatten neun Kinder. 

Munro kaufte einen 3.000-Morgen-Anteil der Farm Rietvlei. Ihr jüngstes Kind Betty wurde auf der Farm geboren. Er importierte ein paar Shorthorn-Rinder und baute eine reinrassige Herde auf, die auf landwirtschaftlichen Ausstellungen viele Preise gewann. 

Der Hof war für damalige Verhältnisse sehr repräsentativ, mit einem sprudelnden kristallklaren Wasserbach, der durch den Garten vor dem Haus floss. Um das Haus herum befanden sich mindestens vier Obstgärten mit verschiedenen Früchten.

Frau Munro war bekannt für ihre köstlichen hausgemachten Marmeladen und Gelees. Links vor dem Haus wuchs eine Catoba-Weinrebe und zwei lange Spaliere aus Weinreben wuchsen auf jeder Seite des Weges, der zum Haus führte.

In der Mitte, dort wo heute sich heute der Pool befindet, war der alte “Löschteich”. Hinter dem Haupthaus steht heute noch das alte Backhaus, darin steht heute der Generator, der die Energieversorgung sicherstellt. Die Backhäuser errichtete man aus Gründen des Feuerschutzes immer abseits.

Die Stadt Pretoria kaufte Rietvlei 1929, um die Stadt mit Trinkwasser zu versorgen. Im August 1938 führte Herr A. Weyers 67 Blessböcke von General Jan Smuts nahe gelegener Farm Doornkloof (im Osten) ein. Dies geschah, indem die Tiere zu Pferd von der Smuts-Farm zum Reservat getrieben wurden. Das Gebiet wurde später zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt.

Der Rietvlei-Staudamm wurde während der Weltwirtschaftskrise gebaut und 1934 fertiggestellt. Arbeiter erhielten 4 Schilling im Monat und die Erde wurde mit Maultierkarren weggekarrt. Der Damm wird vom Sesmyl (Six Mile) Spruit, fünf Brunnen (einer befindet sich auf einem angrenzenden Grundstück) und fünf Bohrlöchern gespeist. 

Stromaufwärts vom Rietvlei-Damm befindet sich der Marais-Damm, der als Schlammdamm für den Rietvlei-Damm fungiert und dessen Ufer ein, bei den Locals, sehr beliebter Picknick-Platz eingerichtet wurde. Dazu wurden Toiletten gebaut und natürlich auch die beliebten Bird Hides.

Ursprünglich war der Damm nicht öffentlich zugänglich, aber der Stadtrat von Pretoria plante das Reservat ökologisch und führte eine Reihe von Wildarten in das Reservat ein. 

Das Nature-Reservat wurde 1948 proklamiert. Der Rietvlei-Staudamm versorgt Pretoria mit 15 % seines Wassers. 

Die Straßen im Reservat sind gut gepflegt und dienen der Öffentlichkeit zur Wildbeobachtung und dem Personal des Reservats als Wartungsstraßen und Feuerschneisen. 

Straßen teilen das Reservat in 31 Blöcke. Rotationsbeweidung wird im Reservat praktiziert, indem regelmäßig Blockflächen verbrannt und Lecksteine ​​als zusätzliche Fütterung verwendet werden.

Das Reservat hat ein typisches Highveld-Klima mit trockenen, frostigen Wintern und durchschnittlich 724 mm Regen während der Regenzeit im Sommer. Die Temperaturen erreichen im Sommer bis zu 34°C und im Winter bis zu -2°C.

Das Reservat besteht aus offenem Grasland mit welligen Hügeln mit einheimischen Bäumen, die in kleinen Gruppen gruppiert sind. Aufgrund früherer landwirtschaftlicher Praktiken wachsen im Reservat auch eine Reihe exotischer Bäume und Sträucher. 

Die Silberakazie (aus Australien) ist der problematischste Eindringling, da sie keine lokalen Feinde hat und Samen bis zu 50 Jahre im Boden überleben können. 

Das Reservat besteht aus einer Reihe verschiedener Lebensräume, die für erstklassige Vogelbeobachtungen sorgen. Die beiden Dämme im Reservat (mit Bird Hides) bieten offene Gewässer und Feuchtgebiete. 

60 km gut gepflegter, meist geteerter und einigen unbefestigte, Straßen durchziehen das Reservat und ermöglichen den Zugang zu den verschiedenen Lebensräumen.

Wir sind wirklich baff, da wir so ein riesiges Naturschutzgebiet, zwischen den Millionenmetropolen, mit einer derartig großen Artenvielfalt nicht im Entferntesten erwartet hätten. 

Aus unserem geplanten Frühstück mit dem obligatorischen “nur mal gucken” wurde am Ende ein Ausflug von sage und schreibe 6 Stunden, die wir hier verbrachten - und wir sind davon vielleicht gerade einmal ganze 3 Kilometer doppelt gefahren.

Übrigens werden von besagtem Coffee Shop auch Pirschfahrten angeboten. Die Gamedrives finden 3x täglich, jeweils um 8 Uhr, um 10 Uhr und um 3 Uhr statt.

Zu besonderen Terminen gibt es auch Nightdrives. Buchbar sind die Fahrten über die Homepage, telefonisch oder eben auch direkt vor Ort.
