107. Knuckles the Echidna #16

So this one's a bit different from the other three-part arcs we've encountered in this comic so far. Instead of one arc spanning three issues, right now we're getting a standalone issue, followed by a two-part arc. Despite this, this issue does tie into the next two quite a bit, setting the stage for future stories and conflicts with lots and lots of talking. I know I've touched on this before but I have to say it again - while I do actually find the plot of this issue very interesting personally, I'm also cognizant of the fact that this was supposed to be a comic aimed at kids and young teens, a demographic that tends to enjoy humor, fast-paced action sequences, and a protagonist filled with 90's cool-guy sass. An issue that spends most of its time talking about family history, politics, and social issues, is not going to be as interesting to that demographic. This is ultimately Kenders' biggest problem, the fact that he's clearly very invested in his characters, family trees, and worldbuilding, but invests himself in it to a degree that it's no longer a kids' comic. I mean, sure, there was never anything wrong with taking the comic in a more serious direction, and in fact I will always argue that the comic benefited greatly from it as the slapstick humor got old quick, but I do think the seriousness should be focused more in areas of, say, dire threats to the heroes' world, characters' changing alliances and such, not the politidrama tone that Kenders shifts more and more into the longer this sister series goes on. Thus, while I am very fascinated by the plots and the talking and everything that Penders brings to the table here, I can also set aside my own preferences and recognize that this is probably not the place for it all.

But enough of that, onto the story! Knuckles has just returned home from his adventures and arrived at his mother's apartment, when Lara-Le herself arrives after attending church alone, because… sure? I dunno, I don't get the feeling that Auroriums have like, organized services, they seem more like a place where someone goes to pray alone quietly. She's delighted to see her son back home safe, and Wynmacher offers her some milk in a wine glass, which is honestly such a mood.

While she asks her son for details on how his trip went, we see an aircraft approach the Floating Island and dock in a hidden hangar. It turns out to be flown by one Grandfather Tobor, one of the many Guardians still alive and kicking. More show up to greet him, and while they prepare for their meeting we go back to Knuckles and Lara-Le's conversation. Understandably, Lara-Le is kind of incredulous at Knuckles' claim about arriving home after creating a golden energy tunnel, but Knuckles was hoping she might actually have some answers. And thus, she launches into the tale of his birth, back when she and Locke were still happily married. Apparently, it usually takes three days between the mother echidna birthing the egg, and the egg actually hatching, but Locke took the egg from her right after birth in the hospital, and a day later, Knuckles had come into the world. At first, everything seemed normal, until Knuckles started spelling out "SEGA STUD" with his baby blocks and generally didn't act like a toddler, being far too intelligent. Locke leapt on this opportunity, of course, and started putting him through rigorous education, even teaching him Einstein's Theory of Relativity despite Einstein not being even slightly relevant to the echidnas' society! Truly remarkable, I must say!

As one might expect, Lara-Le was feeling very put out that she had no real say in the upbringing of her son, so she went to Knuckles' grandmother Jenna-Lu, Locke's mother, to get some advice. Jenna-Lu bafflingly informed her that relationships shouldn't bother with silly notions like "equality" or "fairness," and told her to essentially just let Locke do his thing and passively act as a good example of moral behavior for Knuckles in the background. Lara-Le tried asking her then if she was even happy with how her own life turned out.

Look. This… I said in my own rules that I'm keeping my blog PG-13, which means I'm allowed exactly one F-bomb over the course of reviewing the preboot. I'm trying very hard not to use it up right this second. Lara-Le is a good person who was screwed royally out of a relationship with her own son because of ancient, outdated traditions that she had no say in. This poor woman. You could say that perhaps she should have expected this, because she did choose to marry Locke after all even knowing who he was and what such a thing might entail, but as we'll see, the situation isn't as clear-cut as that. I feel truly, terribly sorry for Knuckles' mother right now.

We take a bit of a break from hearing about Lara-Le's hardships in marriage and motherhood to see what the Brotherhood is up to. There's a lot of names here that we've never heard before that just get dumped on us all at once, so I'll try to summarize everyone really quick. You should already know who Locke and Sabre are. Tobor is the wrinkly, ancient brown guy with the Geordi-La-Forge-esque visor over his eyes. The purple one with crazy anime bangs is Thunderhawk, because of course that has to be his name. The one who's basically just Knuckles with a green vest and some head jewelry is Sojourner, and lastly, the black echidna with red eyes wearing some kind of weird space helmet is Spectre. Three guesses who the edgy one is here.

They start by dumping all their own personal problems onto each other, which ends up giving some very valuable insight into what exactly the surviving members of the Brotherhood do with their time. Apparently, each one just kind of watches over a certain area on the planet, making sure their little domain claims are safe and stable. Now we're getting into really creepy Illuminati territory, where this super secretive society watches over and manipulates events all around the globe from the shadows. Hilariously, Tobor, Thunderhawk and Sojourner all start ranting about how much of a nuisance Sonic and Tails have been as they traveled through each of their territories in turn, but Sabre finally shuts them up. Things have been rougher on them lately, because while Robotnik was a global terrorist and all, at the very least his ever-present threat loomed over everyone to the point that he and his regime were basically the only threats anyone ever had to deal with. Now, with Robotnik gone, a huge power vacuum has opened up, and a bunch of his old sub-bosses are warring over various bits of territory across the planet, ironically causing even more chaos than before. The various Guardians are having trouble dealing with the situation, and decide to call on the council of fire ants who were apparently just listening in from another room and chilling the entire time. Presumably these guys are kind of like a miniature Brotherhood of their own, consisting of the fire ant advisors to all the previous Guardians - Archimedes, his father Semper Fidelis (are you sensing a pretentious pattern here with the fire ants' names?), and grandfather Deo Volente.

Semper Fidelis suggests that the Brotherhood, if they simply carry on as they always have, will only ensure that echidnas become irrelevant in the grand scheme of things - but that if they instead rise up and take control, that they can "lead the echidnas and the other species on this planet into a new golden age." Gee, that doesn't sound shady and supervillainy as hell! This literally is just the Mobius Illuminati, isn't it?

Back in Lara-Le's apartment, Wynmacher has just finished cooking dinner. Knuckles is confused as to what it is, as it appears to be just a fancily-garnished mound of brown crumbly… stuff, and Wynmacher tells him it's "canard á la exquisite," which is just French for "fancy duck." Dunno why he couldn't have just told Knuckles that in the first place, but then again, they may have French-ified it precisely because we have at least one recurring character in this comic that is a duck, and they wanted to avoid any uncomfortable cannibalistic implications. As they sit down to eat, Lara-Le and Wynmacher decide to announce something special!

…well, that backfired. Honestly, I'm not sure why Knuckles is so upset here though. He's just barely getting to know his mom again after like thirteen years away from her, and he already knew, I'm assuming, that she and Locke were no longer together. Furthermore, it was obvious to anyone who looked at Lara-Le and Wynmacher for longer than two seconds that they were in a relationship. I get that remarriage to a new stepparent can be hard on a kid, and that everyone handles these things differently, but seriously, why the freakout, man?

Well, whatever the specific reason, Knuckles is upset, and as he runs out the doors of his mother's apartment building he happens to run past Julie-Su and the rest of the Chaotix (minus Charmy, of course). He ignores them as they call after him, and Vector wants to go after him, but Julie-Su heads him off.

As Julie-Su rushes off to find Knuckles, we head back to the Brotherhood. They decide to set aside Semper Fidelis' advice for the time being to focus on speaking about Knuckles, specifically the unprecedented energy tunnel power that led him home. Thunderhawk and Sojourner want to dismiss it as the Guardian version of hitting puberty, essentially, but Spectre speaks up for the first time to angrily call out Locke for "tampering with the natural order."

Well, that settles it then. It was already implied by Lara-Le that Locke may have done something to Knuckles' egg right before it hatched, but Spectre's basically confirmed it. But what did he do, exactly? We'll have to shelve that for now, as Julie-Su catches up with Knuckles sitting on a dock looking out at the water. He tries to get her to go away, but she ignores him as expected and sits next to him. Then, unexpectedly, she gives him a quick peck on the cheek. He's outraged, rubbing the kiss off his cheek like a child, but she claims she's merely returning the favor from when he tried to cheer her up after she left the Dark Legion.

Young love! Or at least, teenage crushes! Come on, Julie-Su, you know the reason why - hormones! It's no surprise that these two are being set up together - you could see it coming a mile away, back when she was first introduced. The only question now is how Penders handles a slow burn… how graceful do you suppose it'll be? High hopes, anyone? I really shouldn’t be so hard on him, given that I actually quite like this ship, but I just can’t help making fun of the guy sometimes.

"Fiona was canonically 12, because in a story written by a guy who contradicts himself left and right, I decided she looked kind of young, even though that story also mentions that the prison events took place 7 years ago which would have made her younger than Cream in the flashbacks which means 10 year old Tails was set up with a robot that looked half his age" Or....or....you made a mistaken assumption and decided it was fact.

Unfortunately the KTE story contradicts previous issues and itself, to the point that you somewhat *have* to pick and choose which elements of it actually happened.

One of those contentious elements is the time between Sonic and Mighty’s rescue attempt, and the creation of Auto-Fiona.

We know that Auto-Fiona has to have been built when Fiona is ten. The contentious point is when exactly that was.

The Knuckles comic suggests that Robotnik took Fiona from the first prison to a second one, and immediately built Auto-Fiona. This was implied to be the experiment that he was running on her when Sonic and Mighty made their attack. Robotnik then takes off and abandons her.

This version of events posits that Auto-Fiona was the first Auto-Automaton, built, according to the issue itself, seven years before the events of the main series. This presents something of a problem, because it then requires that Robotnik act wildly out of character.

Robotnik has never been one to sit on a new weapon. This was discussed during the review of Issue 152, where it was commented that it was incredibly unlike either version of Robotnik to invent a new weapon and then sit on it for a while.

He makes something new, gives it the bare minimum of testing, and then deploys it.

But not his shiny new infiltrator droid that he just went out of his way to get the template for. No, she’s going to forgotten about for (apparently) seven years. For this to work, Robotnik has to have been aware that he would one day need to lure in Tails when said fox was (apparently) three. A point where it would’ve been questionable as to whether he even remembered that Tails existed.

Even if you disregard the idea that Auto-Fiona was purpose-built for hunting Tails down, and instead posit that she was reprogrammed for this purpose once Robotnik knew about Tails being a threat to him, there’s still a problem.

That still means that Auto-Fiona existed for more than half a decade before Robotnik decided to use her. It means he had the technology to create perfect infiltrators for seven long years, and never used them. Despite literally just seeing Sonic and Mighty trying to save the real Fiona, he didn’t think it would be a good idea to use her against them.

Either Robotnik is clairvoyant, an idiot, or Auto-Fiona didn’t exist until shortly before the events of Growing Pains Pt.1, and the Auto-Automata weren’t created until the Sally Miniseries.

The problem with Fiona in this case is that, starting from StH28-29, her story gets more and more layered, and at some point, those layers stop making sense.

Layer 1: Fiona Fox is a robot made in the image of a roughly ten year old vixen, to capture and either roboticize or kill Tails.

Layer 2: Fiona was made in the aftermath of Sally Miniseries, per that being the deployment of the original Auto-Automaton.

Layer 3: Like most Auto-Automata, Fiona was made in the image of an organic. There is a real young vixen who served as her template.

Layer 4: The real Fiona was also roughly about ten when the robot was built.

Layer 5: The real Fiona was a contemporary of Sonic, Mighty, and Ray, when they were roughly about ten.

This is about as far as it goes before things get screwy.

Layer 6: Fiona was also about ten at the time. 

Layer 7: The Auto-Fiona was built immediately after these events.

And at this point, the contradictions start. Here we have a ten year old Fiona and Auto-Fiona existing years before the first use of Auto-Automata by Robotnik.

Layer 8: After escaping the prison, Fiona joined Nic the Weasel.

Layer 9: According to the seven year jump cited in-story, and Fiona’s own retelling of her backstory, she has been working with Nic for the past five years.

Layer 10: Fiona has never appeared in any of Nic’s previous stories, despite allegedly being her partner during all of them.

At this juncture, it’s a bit messy, but things aren’t unfixable. The time jumps are all over the shop, but you can kinda squeeze everything into one cohesive whole if you take liberties with it.

Layer 11: Fiona is 16.

Therein lies the problem. There are two seminal events in Fiona’s backstory: imprisonment, and the creation of Auto-Fiona. Unfortunately, these two events are difficult to match up. Both happen five years apart (Unless you really do think that Robotnik made Auto-Fiona and then forgot about it for half a decade), and both seemingly require Fiona to be ten. 

The logical option, then, is to bump Fiona down enough that she could serve as Auto-Fiona’s template at a time when Tails is 10 and Sally is 15 (Post-Sally miniseries) but not so young that her appearance with Sonic and Mighty isn’t improbable. Where exactly that happy medium is, I’m not entirely sure, but I’d wager it’s a drop of about 2-3 years. 

It’s still a bit shaky, and I think I’ll probably have to do a separate post detailing how best to try and plot it out, but I do think there’s a perfect zone in there, where Fiona’s complete backstory can (mostly) fit without causing headaches.

Taŋyáŋ yahípi

Háu mitákuyapi! Welcome to Hóyeya. Taŋyáŋ yahípi. Things are just barely getting off the ground, and ideas are still being thrown around. This is hopefully the beginning of something very beautiful. The goal is to create more materials for people to be able to listen, read, write, and speak our Lakȟóta language. And also to create a platform for any Lakȟóta artists, educators, and culture bearers to offer their creations, teachings and/or performances.

The first project in the works is a full album written and recorded by me (Alex FireThunder), featuring 16 songs all written in Lakȟóta featuring drum, vocals, and sometimes a guitar.

Future projects include Lakȟóta language workshops, methods of teaching language consultations, a free streaming podcast featuring Lakȟóta speakers, children's books in Lakȟóta, classroom materials, Lakȟóta language games, and much more!

Ich war so verliebt in dich.. so sehr. Ich wollte nicht das du jemals an meiner Liebe zweifelst. Ich glaube es ist bereits fast 3 Monate her. Wir kennen uns mittlerweile 6 verf**kte Jahre. Was ist uns geblieben von dieser Liebe die wir einst empfanden? Eine angebliche „Freundschaft“. Ich verkrafte es aber leider nur schwer. Ich weiß das ich nicht perfekt bin oder keinen perfekten Body habe. Ich habe meine Fehler, die auch in unserer Beziehung eine Rolle gespielt haben. Du sagtest mir wie sehr du mich liebst, dass wir eine Familie sind und wir heiraten werden. Als wir 16/17 waren haben wir davon geträumt unseren Weg einst gemeinsam zu gehen. Wir/Ich dachte das wir es endlich geschafft haben und egal welche Kriese wir hatten habe immer gehofft das es einst besser wird. Jedes Mal aufs neue hab ich gehofft, dass sich dieser Schmerz lohnt. 294. Sonic Universe #16

Journey to the East (Part 4 of 4): A World Under Constant Vigil

So good ol' Espio's back from being a bad guy! Everyone's certainly surprised to see him, but Khan seems a little more than just surprised.

He's got a very fair point. I mean, let's be real, just how many friends would Sonic have left if he rejected everyone he's ever gotten into a physical fight with? Like two? Despite Sonic's words, Sally is suspicious of Espio as well, and when he informs her that he's only with the Iron Dominion because of his affiliation with the Shinobi Clan, she still insists that because of his previous actions she can't trust his word alone. So, he decides on a new tactic to gain their trust - by revealing all the dirt he has on each of them.

Oh, my god. I… honestly can't even imagine where that royal birthmark might be that's so embarrassing, first of all, given that she wears next to nothing all the time anyway. I suppose it'd have to be a place you really have to shift the fur around awkwardly to see. And second of all, look at Khan's freaking face! His reaction! This whole thing is just amazing. Khan still doesn't know what Espio is getting at, and no one really understands how this is supposed to make them trust him more, but Espio explains that his clan's entire philosophy is based on the collection of information, and by divulging it all, he's just lost any advantage over them he would have had, if he desired such a thing. That… doesn't necessarily make much sense and really just sounds like an excuse to have that page above of him hilariously spilling some secrets about the four heroes, but I digress! Espio blindfolds everyone and leads them to a secret cave, where they stand above a dark abyss, and he informs them that they must make it to the other side to meet with the bride of his clan before disappearing. Tails decides to try flying over, but Khan pulls him back before using his lightning powers to reveal a plethora of deadly traps hidden in the stalactites on the cave's roof.

Ah! Not quite the Indiana Jones leap of faith trick, but then again, this isn't a matte painting. Sonic, against Sally's wishes to take things slow, grabs a huge armful of dirt and races on ahead, bridging each break in the twisting path ahead through sheer speed like Mario over a one-tile gap and spreading the dirt everywhere so the path is plainly visible. They cross, expecting more tests, but to their surprise they end up immediately in the Bride of Constant Vigil's main chambers.

Shh! Khan, don't ruin the easiest set of negotiations you've had thus far! At first it really does seem like he's just mad they put so much effort into all this for the last clan to be so easy to win over, but when Sally makes him take a deep breath he reveals that the real reason he's angry is because he thinks the Shinobi Clan should have done more to stand up to the Iron Dominion and help the free people of the Dragon Kingdom. She calmly tells him that once upon a time the clan did just that, tried to act as the "police" of sorts to the Dragon Kingdom, and when they were nearly wiped out as a result they adopted their sneaky ways to survive. Definitely a reasonable position - but she then goes on to say that Espio has demonstrated to her with his actions that sometimes, those rules must be broken for the greater good. Espio, with his bride's permission, explains to everyone that he was never a native to Angel Island as everyone thought, but is rather a Shinobi spy sent to monitor the Brotherhood. W-wait, the Brotherhood? The ones who spied on everyone else across the entire globe for centuries?!

Right here, right now, the Shinobi Clan has earned my everlasting respect. They figured out early on exactly what I've been saying this whole time - that the Brotherhood is (or was, considering all but one member is dead now) shady as hell, and operating with extensive superpowers and no oversight essentially ensured that they became way too self-assured of their "right" to spy on, and potentially take over, the entire freaking world. I'm not even exaggerating here - remember their really creepy conversation in KtE#16 where they were talking about forcibly leading the planet into a new "golden age" under echidna guidance? The Shinobi are the smartest people on the goddamn planet for not only noticing what the hell was going on over there, but taking action to make sure it never went too far. It also adds a hilarious note of irony to the Brotherhood's ever-so-secretive nature - all this time they thought they were the ultimate spies, watching over all of Mobius to look after "echidna interests," with one of them even stationed directly in the Dragon Kingdom, and yet they never suspected for a moment that someone else was watching them.

Anyway, Espio goes on to recount from here how Valdez was his predecessor, keeping tabs on Locke, and when Espio was chosen as his successor he helped him settle into the Rainbow Valley on Angel Island, pretending to be just another local. Espio watched Knuckles for basically the entire time he was alone on the island after Locke disappeared, and the only reason he was permitted to reveal himself at all was due to an emergency, when the Freedom Fighters were captured and Knuckles was stripped of his powers in the Knuckles Chaotix special. His feelings eventually got the better of him, and he became close to Knuckles and the others despite being under orders to remain secretive.

Oh, boy. Even when your mom's the leader of a ninja clan, it's still hard not to be excited when she lets you do something fun, huh Espio? Espio is overjoyed to be free of his former duties, but Constant Vigil remains serious, reminding Khan that he has his work cut out for him in the future. In response, he takes the plain power ring band from his head and, uh… makes a fist around part of it, and after a flash of light there's some kind of little sigil on it. I can only assume this is meant to signify he's accepted his role as King of the Free People, but I have no idea how he just randomly decorated his bit of jewelry with no real effort. Constant Vigil offers to have her clan ensure the heroes' safe journey back to their own kingdom, and when Sonic points out that they don't seem like they can spare the muscle due to the lack of guards, several dozen chameleons melt out of the shadows, revealing they've been watching the conversation all along. Man, I really like these guys. The next day, the heroes thank Li Yuen for hosting them before flying back out, ready to retake their city and break the grip of the Iron Dominion for good.
