Some of the most iconic moments from an early Out of the Abyss session.
Morning (Tabaxi) being gifted a necklace of rotten fish as a sign of gratitude from some Kuatoa
Treacle (Goblin) still in the same clothing from enslavement not wanting her outfit covered in gross plant slime
Artemisia (Avariel - elf with wings from elemental plane of air) crying over dying wife
Artemisia and Sarith (drow ex slaver npc) artemisia’s current project is to try and help on his path of redemption the party has taken that as a sign she’s interested in him
Haleth (Goliath) contemplating the conundrum of slapping a horse’s arse as it’s our wild shaped druid Mellon
WHERE IS THE CRITICAL SLIME MASS! A players quote. Something we have not discovered several years later.

I am still mentally recovering from my d&d session last night...
(SPOILERS FOR THE MODULE "OUT OF THE ABYSS")
My character, Anlyth the elf reborn, has adopted two wererat gnome children. They have been the partys additional muscle for about a month or so in The Underdark. Good bonding time with other wererats too. The twins consider Anlyth to be their guardian, and vow to protect one another. Since they have felt nothing but abandonment, they were so happy to have someone to take care of them.
During a strange situation in Sloobludop, a kuatoa village on The Dark Lake, the party is tasked to stop a sacrifice to "make believe" gods. During the scuffle on the altar to "The Deep Father", two kuatoa die, and a rumbling comes from the lake. Large tentacles writhe under the water, as two heads resembling monstrous baboons break the surface tension.
The motherfucking Demogorgon shows up. Allegedly summoned by the kuatoa rituals, this massive son of a bitch runs up on Sloobludop.
Upon seeing it for the first time and hearing its roar, Anlyth gains another point of madness, which is now longterm. The effects?
Anlyth forgets the entire adventure up until the beginning of the campaign. They dont know how they got to this place, dont know who everyone is, and a gigantic freak monster is barreling toward them. So Anlyth does what any normal person would do when faced with certain death.
They ran.
The rest of the party runs, but toward the boats on the lake as the demogorgon charges toward the village. In the commotion, they didnt turn to make sure the twins were with them. They assumed I had them with me.
But standing in the center of all the commotion were the twins. One was paralyzed in fear, dissociating as the roars grow louder and louder. The other, panicking and also under effects of madness, lashes out on their brother.
If the demogorgon didn't kill them directly, the destruction of the buildings around them would have. The most gut wrenching off-screen death ever experienced in a game, the GM was upset by it too, but everything happened naturally. No retconning could have saved them.
As Anlyth ran to the edges of the village which was blocked off by walls and nets strung with hooks, the party yells for them from the boat, and uncertainty was overruled by the feeling they will be safer if they went with this group of people.
The cleric, a human reborn, asks what happened, and why they ran away. The warlock, a hedgehog reborn, asks where the twins are.
Anlyth: "Twins??? What are you talking about? How do you know me??"
Cleric: "Your kids, Anlyth. You don't remember them!?"
Anlyth: "kids? I dont have kids."
After the party escapes and finds a safe place to camp during the night, Anlyth is visited by a spectre that tells them they "will watch over them now".
The next morning, the cleric is able to restore Anlyths memory. They look in panic for the twins, which is met by sorrowful faces.
Anlyth cries for 20 hours a day for over a week.

i think i’ve said it before in or on various posts, but honestly you can make your dnd character an atheist, like, whole-chested.
questions like ‘are there actually all-powerful god figures from before the history of creation’, ‘what is a god and what makes them powerful’, etc, are completely valid questions in-universe. you don’t need to fudge any lines with it.
so play a character who thinks the things that people call gods are actually just archfeys and devils. play someone who sees holy magic and starts talking about the power of belief and how some people may have magical abilities similar to that of kuatoa. play someone who thinks that a ‘god’ that’s been believed in for thousands of years is actually just a series of unrelated elementals that enter a region of high planar activity. play someone who can’t be convinced that a ‘god’ is a god, because can you really be sure? were you there, at the start of all creation? can it be killed? if that’s a god, why isn’t that dragon a god?

TDDC Stat Blast from the Past
Tales From My D&D Campaign is 3.5 edition, like a relic from a bygone age. But people still ask about stats and such often enough. I just got another question on the Discord about Kua Toa stats.
Well I tend to modify them - remake them for every fight, and their level - even for the basic KTs - tended to creep up as the players leveled. After all, any of them you run into on land are the elite, best-trained and best equipped, because they are going into battle without the usual legions of slaves.
But here are the stat blocks from the party’s first encounter with the Deluvians... and just generally, how my stat blocks look (even though these are so old that the originals said “Illuvian” instead of “Illud”).

KUA TOA TRAITS: (Kua Toa in TDDC have better racial abilities than is usual for 3.5 edition Kuo Toa)
Electrical Resistance 30; Amphibious; Keen Sight (+4 search and spot; can see moving objects or creatures, even if invisible or ethereal), Slippery(+8 escape artist; skin secretions allow them to slip out of webs, magical or otherwise); their skin secretions can also be used to apply a powerful adhesive to their shields (attackers must make a DC 14 Reflex save to avoid having their weapon stuck, disarming them), and also to power Colos Cloaks (see below).
EQUIPMENT:
A Lightning Ball is a metal-shelled alchemical device which can be tossed into a 5-foot square as a standard action, breaking an internal glass barrier. Once the glass inside is broken, it takes one round for the chemicals to mix, after which the Ball carries a dangerous electric charge for up to 5 rounds - during that time, the first creature to move within 5-feet of the ball triggers an electrical discharge zapping them for 2d4 electrical damage (Reflex 11 for half) and dealing 1 electrical "splash" damage to any adjacent creature. The zap is NOT triggered by "grounded" creatures, meaning any creature with Electrical Resistance 5 or greater. If multiple 'active' Lightning Balls are triggered at the same time (with overlapping areas), they interfere with each other somewhat, therefore the damage does not increase even though the additional balls are still expended. A creature carrying one or more Lightning Balls who fails any Reflex save must make an additional Reflex save at the same DC to avoid accidentally triggering any carried Lightning Balls (again, the damage is the same as for triggering a single ball).
Whipweed is an alchemicaly treated plant crafted by KuaToa of house Domod for quick escapes and tactical repositioning. The strand of modified and compressed into a driftwood tube with a screw top (some versions are designed so that you can hold it at the bottom and twist to open the top). When opened, it shoots out with incredible energy (though it lacks the mass to inflict relevant damage if used as a weapon). As a standard action, make a touch attack (usually against an inanimate terrain feature) with a range increment of 20, maximum range 60 feet. If it hits, the goo ball at the end of the strand attaches firmly (if momentarily) and immediately whips back, reeling in the wielder if he can hold on (Ref 13 - on a failed save, the tube is ripped out of his hand). Alternatively, the Whipweed can be used to reel in an unattended item that weighs less than half as much as the wielder. Whipweed may have a variety of other uses, but they generally require specialized skills (feats, in other words). Whipweed tubes cost 200gp each, though re-usable models (effectively magic item versions) are rumored to exist.
Colos Cloaks (Kua-Toa Invisibility Cloaks) recharge 1 charge for every hour worn by a live Kua-Toa (including while in use). All versions can store a maximum of 15 charges, and charges decay at a rate of 1 per 8 hours when the cloak is not worn by a living Kua-Toa. Deluvian Basic cloaks are typically black and scaley when visible, whereas Illud Basic cloaks are generally grey (and scaley). The Colos (particularly the higher quality versions) can of course be crafted in any number of styles, including fine non-scaled fabrics. ALL versions have the basic combat ability: [3 charges: Invis (1 min, CL 3)]. Additional abilities of the different quality Colos cloaks are as follows: Basic Colos: [6 charges: Invisibility (1 hr, CL 3)] Noble Colos: [15 charges: Invisibility (8 hr, CL 7), 4 charges: Invis (1 hr, CL 3)] Elite Colos: [4 charges Invisibility (8 hr, CL 9), 10 charges: Swift Invisibility (2 rnd, CL 5)]

Umberlee saved my goblin eldritch knight...
This was revealed two weeks ago in session, and I spent those two weeks trying to figure out why a sea goddess of chaos who is very much not known for mercy would save my little amnesiac archaeologist.
And then I tried to plug him into @jewishdragon‘s custom alignment chart. I asked for help placing him and started listing some of the things he’s done. Then, it dawned on me that despite diplomatic attempts (-1 Char mod) he’s caused quite a bit of general chaos.
The first town he got to with the party happened to be the same town that the therianthropic blood cult who tried to sacrifice him was based. Umberlee spared him from bleeding out (magic initiate feat explained).
Upon arriving in town, Bug made certain to wear the ceremonial headdress the cult placed on him for most of his time in public there. Not all of the townies were cultists, but they all recognized the sacrificial helmet and were all made very uncomfortable by it.
At the local tavern that night, there’s a card game and Bug ventures over to join. He puts his trademark scarab medallion up for this hand. Bug wins the hand, grabs his medallion and winnings, then ducks out of the card game pissing off all of the townies and some of the caravan involved. Including some weird blue-skinned dwarf (who may be related to Bug’s near-death).
The party fights a few of the were-cultists that night to prevent them from kidnapping caravan members. We successfully kill all five of them. Bug proceeds to severe the head of the wereboar and carries it around town strapped to his back the next day looking for someone with dermestid or scarab beetles to clean the skull off for him.
That also happened to be the day he ate our kobold chef’s golden curry (grants telepathy). Bug passed his save, the townies who decided to eat some because Bug seemed fine did not. [The DM has informed us we may have a newly awakened warlock or 2 on our hands if we ever go back through there.]
More chaos ensued once the caravan got got to Luxheim. Bug only caused some of it.
During 3 weeks of downtime, he scouted most if not the entire ruined city. He only got into two fights during that time (his Int is 15). The first being when our bloodhunter unwittingly freed a gunpowder ooze from a barrel no-one could read the label on. Bug kept using firebolt on it, demonstrating that goblin science is a combination of gnome science and kobold science. Then, the PCs had to save some lvl 1 NPCs from 2 large slimes in the sewers. Turns out Thunderwave is a novel way to get someone out of a gelatinous cube.
Bug and Bohala (dwarf fighter) mined some weird green and purple crystals while exploring. Thankfully the wild magic crystals just blared out music when the two of them used the biggest one to try to signal some dwarves Bohala invited from across the frozen bay.
A 50ft celestial shark ridden by a Kuatoa preist came cruising out of the city to the by when the dwarvish ironside steamer started firing at the skeletal wyvern showing up across the other side of the bay with Dirk the reasonable wraith. The massive shark went across the top of the water to attack the dwarves (explained later).
After commandeering a landing boat and getting the dwarf to get us out to the shark, the 3 of us who showed up managed to fight the giant shark and priest. Only our poor bloodhunter had to make con saves not to drown.
First we managed to kill the priest. Our skeletal bard turning the shark into a boat (DM’s call) really helped in that respect since it made it much more difficult for the sharp to roll like that.
Once we killed the kuatoa cleric, we had to contend with the 50t celestial shark who was now a shark again thanks to the huge waterweird it was bonded with breaking the bard’s concentration.
Bug managed to crawl into one of the shark’s gill slits and used Shape Water to make an air pocket for himself. Meanwhile the bard and the bloodhunter had to hang onto the shark as it dove and rolled.
Bug slashed and bit at the gill membrane (with disadvantage), used Thunderwave to little effect, and successfully got the killing blow burning an exit hole through the giant shark with Aganazzar’s Scorcher.
After getting the dwarves and the wraith settled, we looted the shark. Bug only wanted it’s 2ft long teeth since it didn’t have much of historical worth in its guts apart from some old paintings and a sealed chest with very clear warning labels (he passed his Wis-save to overcome his curiosity).
That encountered prompted Bug to try to figure out which deity had saved him (nat1). It was totally Peylor. Thankfully, the bloodhunter asked him why he thought that and figured out (nat20) that it was actually Umberlee before Bug started praying.
The dream he gets says, “Open the city. Let the path open.” Still no idea what that means.
Bug had a sword commissioned to be made from one of the celestial shark teeth with the symbol of Umberlee on it. A DM roll later, and Bug had a Sword of the Mysterious Stranger.
We find out about The Curator when Baron Geoff (the bard) manages to catch one of the crows. Bug is trying to be helpful and accidentally spills the beans on some things. So we had to figure out where the Curator’s goons were going to go a raid it first. We narrowed it down to an island with Kuatoa in the harbor and an old  battlefield Bug had a map for and had been itching to get to.
We sent the party of now lvl 2 NPCs to the island and convinced Dirk the wraith to go assist them. The party proper managed to gather some NPCs to help us go scout the battlefield. Bug lost a day trying to tame some of the large goats roaming just outside of town while the rest of the party did other preparations.
We did manage to convince some NPCs to join us on our trip to the battlefield. A goblin gambler, an older cleric with a winter wolf, a dwarfish gunslinger, and a fey woodchuck.
Bug the convinced the fey woodchuck to accompany us so they could continue messing with the gunslinger.
The bloodhunter convinced the gunslinger to come so he could keep an eye on the fey woodchuck.
Bug followed the fey woodchuck through a Transport Through Trees spell, and asked to be sent to the battlefield. No one else in the party had thought to do so (we were all there). So they got to figure out a way to get to the battlefield. Turns out the coastal wizard a day’s trip from town is only lvl 4, so they had to ride oxen from the caravan.
The upside to this was that Gesento(sp?) got paid with the sharktooth shield Bug had him commissioned before heading out.
Thanks to being in the fey wild, Bug got transported to the battlefield 4 days prior. He remembered to thank and pay the fey. Then, spent the next 6 days scurrying about finding, logging, and deducing everything he could about the battle. Including some more recent spine devil spikes.
The bloodhunter found a sword that was buried that Bug overlooked. Bug recalled a story about a noble who refused to leave his castle as it sank, and a knight who had come from said castle (nat20). But the source was pretty sketchy.
The Currator’s crows show up, so Bug starts distracting them. Being a terrible liar did and didn’t help. Accidentally outing the Bloodhunter as being a Bloodhunter and asking the crows what they knew of the Promethean (dead language) phrase “seek the dead brother”, the crows (lesser undead themselves) got VERY riled up.
The Currator’s skeletal Kenku goons started showing up and a fight ensued involving a coatl that was acting weird. As soon as the skellies were dispatched, Bug booked it for the trapdoor Rolland had dug out in a fortified hut. Inside was a spiral stairwell. Bug tied some rope to the railing, then proceeded to slide down the hand rail w/o issue (nat20). Which also meant he went sailing off the end of it cartwheeling across the floor, setting off all of the traps behind him, a subterranean courtyard and stopping abruptly by slamming into a tree in its center (nat1) after causing a loud ruckus.
Found the sunken castle!
Thankfully the werewolves that lived there weren’t part of the cult and didn’t kill us since Rolland smoothed things over with them. And we successfully defeated The Currator’s goons! Bug was happy to had some more skulls to his collection.
He also made some Kenku jaw bone pauldrons for our Drow Light Cleric. Yes, you read all of that sentence correctly.

Unfortunately the Drow took Xylaris’ bagpipes...
Into the Abyss - Session 1
The story started with the three adventurers waking up in a Drow outpost, stripped of all their equipment and about to be enslaved. Humble beginnings indeed.
They weren’t alone in their imprisonment as the Drow were quite industrious when it came to slaving. They had managed to amass three Deep Gnomes (Topsy, Turvy and Jimjar), a Dark Dwarf (Buppido), a Quagoth who says he’s actually an Elf prince (Prince Dendril the Quagelf, if you will), a sentient mushroom (Stool), a rouge Drow (Sarith), a pacifist Kuatoa (Shuushar) and a Dwarf (Eldeth). Add on the large, green Dwarf (Sakibena), the Dragonborn (Xylaris) and the halfling (Tokken) and you had quite the motley crew.
The Drow took advantage of the free labour in the outpost almost immediately and there was a great tragedy when one of the Deep Gnomes, Topsy, knocked and smashed a fragile figurine that belonged to the Matron of the Drow. Her punishment was to be thrown to the spiders below and her death inspired a mutiny.
The escape was made all the more easier by a guard with a curious burn on his face offering the key to their prison. Sakibena saw no ill-motives in the Drow’s actions but the others werent so sure. Still, it was the best chance they had to escape and so they waited for his signal.
Sneaking into the guards house was easy; as the guard had promised, the replacements for the previous guard shift were absent. Tokken snuck up to the higher level and dispatched the lone guard and managed to find the group a bunch of armour and weapons to arm themselves.
And not a moment too soon as the guard shift arrived. And so did a bunch of flying demons!
Choosing the easy route, the group jumped down a waterfall, skipping the battle entirely.

Day 12: Underwater #mapvember
A village of Kua-Toa on the bottom of the Darklake. They are basically insane to be honest and their huts are made of sunken debris. They have no order to anything so I got to put ladders and houses where ever I wanted. I ran Out of the Abyss as my first campaign so the Underdark has a special place in my heart.

Things that happened in the last d&d session.
We played for like 10 hours because no one knows when to quit. Probably would’ve kept going if I didn’t have to work the day after.
1. Continued tormenting the sorcerer by slowly nudging the kuatoa we saved into spooning him whenever I'm on nightwatch. 2. Got covered in swamp gunk in the name of stealth, still rolled like all the nat 1's because I am always at disadvantage.  I now have I N F I N I T E  S W A M P  A S S until we get back to an actual town.
3. Trapped an orc patrolling the outside of an emcampment super hard by using thaumaturgy to lead him into a rope trap the paladin was waiting to spring.
4. Made the orc shit himself because of how intimidating my tiny, tiny gnome and the dragonborn paladin were.
5. Interrogated the orc to find out what kind of mess we were about to walk into in the orc camp below.
6. Kind of ... 'accidentally' tore one of the arteries in his leg with one of his broken teeth while trying to get information.
7. Organised the whole party into a firing squad on top of this hill overlooking the camp and took out the 5 or 6 orcs hanging out in a single round of combat. Ranged weapons for days!
8. Stealthed into the camp, hid all the bodies and fixed the ground so you couldn't see all the blood and goo.
9. stealthed into the big centre tent which was some kind of weird lab/church for an Orc god of decay
10. Had to deal with all that stealth getting cocked up because the paladin threw a fucking barrel down the only hallway further into the church. Which crashed into a wall.
11. Crept up the hallway and hid behind said barrel because I am a tiny, tiny man. Looked into the room to receive an nat 20 axe to the god damn face from a waiting orc! The fuck Drack, we were going so well.
12. Fuelled by revenge, cast inflict wounds into the orc that hit me (straight in the dick) and he drops like a sack of potatoes.
13. The evil priest dude who had been infecting the swamp with some disease goo getting his shit stomped in by the paladin and the fighter, ends with the hobgoblin fighter flipping over the dude and stabbing him in the neck with a spear.
14. Slowly dealing with this super bloated orc equivalent of the boomers from Left 4 dead because the curse of no one hitting shit returned.
15. The Paladin and I realising this was some kind of evil place of worship and just wrecking all the iconography.
16. Saved the damsel we'd been sent to get and me kicking the priests body into this disease goo that he was secreting so there was just no evidence that he was there anymore.
16.5 Skinned an orc super good. Like My inventory says "1x Complete Orc skin suit" because I rocked a nat 20 on that check.
17. Having to have the conversation that no we shouldn't spend the night in the orc war camp that we just fucking destroyed because the war chief was out hunting and might be back soon. Agreed that we should finish the whole gang and hid in the swamp outside the camp for the night and to regain our spells. (I didn’t get to take watch so the sorcerer didn’t get his nightly dose of fishguy spooning)
18. Waking up to find out that the thing I thought was going to happen totally happened and the giant Orog warchief and his guards rolled up. We all stealthed our way back on top of the ridge and took out his guards in a surprise round while he ran into the tent/church to see why no one was here.
19. We hear the heavily armored warchief screaming in rage before he bursts out of the tent to see his men dead and like 6 arrows/crossbow bolts and a slimy spear heading for his face. (The DM was so smug you guys, "Oh, even with the surprise round, I'm confident you'll still have a hard time with this guy" cut to 30 seconds later where he was significantly less happy with how this was going)
20. To his credit, he was still alive after the barrage. Then my turn comes up and I guiding bolt the everloving crap out of him. I disintegrated that bastards head. It was like something from my japanese animes.
21. Paladin grabs the incredibly worn plate mail because fuck yeah platemail and we loot some junk, I grab the less fun scalp cape he had before heading back to the goblin village we stopped at. We end up mining a bunch of iron ore and some gemstones and get invited to a banquet.
22. I may be at the centre of a huge trade agreement between the countrys government and the goblin leader because I made a twisty lantern thing and used continual flame on it and they both want it ... I just wanted to test a lantern design to help out the creepy skin guy I know back in town.
