Happy Super Duper Monday, minna-san! I hope everyone had a good weekend. As for us, we are stoked for many fun events happening this summer. The weather is getting a bit warmer so be sure to keep yourselves hydrated and wear light clothing. Well, we done our obligation so we have loads of fun news to share with you. You know the drill. First off, last week’s chapter was EXTRAORDINARY! With the gang finally out of Totland, now they can rest easy now that Sanji is back with them. Meanwhile, all the representatives from the 20 kingdoms are sailing towards to Reviere. We see that Rebecca and Kyros joined with Violet with King Riku. Suddenly, a bunch pirates were plotting to kidnap Violet, but alas, the great marine hero Coby arrives and put a stop to them. He and Helmeppo are escorting the Riku family. Then, Coby reads the news about Luffy and Sanji. He couldn’t stop crying knowing that Luffy is making his name. The whole world reads the shocking news about the attempt assassination of Big Mom. Everyone was shocked to read the BIG BIG BIG NEWS about Luffy. So new bounties have increased, and a new Yonko has been announced. First, Sanji has a bounty of 330 million berries, but was really disappointed that his wanted poster added his family name with it. Once again, it depressed him. At the end, Luffy sees his bounty, but was sad cause it decreased to 150 berries, but Brook told him he misread it. It was announced that the new Yonko is none other… drum roll, please! Da da da da da da! LUFFY!! Yes, is now a Yonko with a bounty of 1 billion 500 million!!! YOWZA! That’s a big increase than 2 years ago when he fought against Doflamingo. The news shocked the gang?! Straw Hat Luffy is the 5th Yonko!!!! What will happen next time?! Guess we’ll see how things will unfold in this new adventure. There is no manga this week due to Golden Week so be patient and wait. Next, this past weekend’s episode was scary as we see Big Mom going nuts to see that Brook destroyed the picture of Mother Caramel. Meanwhile, as everyone tries to fulfill their mission, the Big Mom pirates surrounded the Vinsmokes ready to kill them as they planned. Judge was utterly in distraught finding out that he was played for a sucker for trusting Big Mom. At the end, Katakuri approaches quickly to stop Bege and Luffy from carrying on their plan to kill Big Mom as Brook urges Luffy to show the wrecked picture to Big Mom one more time so that she can screech her lungs out for the KX launcher to kill her. Next time, the fight goes on. Will they succeed with this plan? Don’t miss it! Now on with the news! Look who came to hang out with us for a bit. It’s Tongari-san! Take it away, my friend. Share your enthusiastic news. First off, Golden Week is a half week holiday, and the tower is getting ready to celebrate the future king of the pirates birthday, Luffy!!! His birthday is on May 5th, and it’s a good day. Its kid’s day so all children in elementary school will have free entry to the park. Next, Tongari Store are selling these adorable plush purses of mascots of Kumacy, Chopper, Bepo, and Kung Fu dugong to keep your phone or ticket safely tucked w/o losing it. Next, Mugiwara Café will be giving out picture frame designs for free for customers when you order something from the menu and have pictures taken at the tower. Only available May 1st, 2nd, and 6th from noon to six pm. Last entry will be at five-thirty. Next, the store will be selling the birthday buttons of the character for May. Here is also the new birthday button of Luffy with his cheerful face. Also, if you make purchase over 1000 yen, you’ll get a free birthday poster of Luffy. Moving on, last week, all arcades stocked this new King of Artist figurine of Luffy in Bound Man pose from Whole Cake Island. If you got your coins and game face ready, get on with it, and beat that crane. Next, Mugiwara store are selling these new mini tote bags of Ace, Law, and Chopper with the first letters of their names in bold color. Next, new acrylic straps of Luffy and Sanji have been released. Also, a new t-shirt of Luffy has been released which is his t-shirt from his kid days with Anchor in front and his kid self in the back. It’s a cute t-shirt. Next, they re-stocked more of these button sets of Ace, Zoro, Sanji, Ace, and Law. Next, more new buttons. This button sets of Luffy and Katakuri, and Zoro and Sanji in their Germa suits. You can also find them at the Jump Shops as well. Get it before it’s out of stock. Next, some awesome birthday goods of Luffy will also be at Mugiwara Stores and the tower such as this acrylic art board, tea cup, hand towel, t-shirt, friendly eco purse, and folders. Next, OP game app, Thousand Storm, we mentioned last week that its having a campaign of the Straw Hats in their new look. Pass many levels and get many coins to receive Luffy in his dashing pirate outfit. Next, new updates on the OP Summer event at USJ. First, last week, the website has launched the opening for reservations. You can purchase online or on the day you visit, but I would recommend you buy the tickets online so you avoid standing and waiting for your turn. If you purchased online, be sure to bring an ID and confirmation of your purchase so they can confirm it. The show is at 7:00 so you must be there 15 minutes early so you have time to find your seat. For the restaurant, There are still plenty of openings, but be quick otherwise you’ll have to wait till you visit the park and make reservations in person at the Beverly Hills Boulangerie. The window is located on the right side so stand in line and wait till they take your reservation time. For those who made reservations online, like the show tickets, bring ID and confirmation. You can have it your smartphone or print it out. In my opinion, you should print it just in case technology goes wrong. They have updated the menu they’ll have this year. You’ll be given a free drink such as orange juice at the entrance. For appetizers, they’ll have smoked duck, pastrami beef, smoked salmon, raw ham millefeu, and marinated shrimp and octopus with some delicacy sauce with hearts. For entre, you will have a choice to choose either the beef dish that has sirloin roast beef with layoinasse potatoes, and gratin soybeans. The fish dish has sautee sea beam with mash potatoes and eggplants. Both entres will include bread with butter. For kids menu, they’ll have Buggy’s Watch-Out-for-his-red nose dish. It will have Buggy’s chicken rice with a cherry tomato, fried shrimp with tartar sauce, omelet, chicken nugget, fresh steamed veggies, and macaroni gratin. For dessert, they’ll serve Tokimeki’s Strawberry Mousse. For drinks, you can order these colorful alcohol or non-alcohol drinks. For alcohol drinks, they’ll have Buggy’s “Who the hell you’re calling big nose” drink with an orange and cherry, and they’ll have for “You’re beautiful” strawberry sparkling wine. For non-alcohol, they’ll have “You’re cute” lemon soda cocktail, and Longing for the All-Blue drink with some colorful gelatin fish. If you order either of these drinks, you’ll be given a free random silver spoon of any Straw Hats. You will can also purchase a commemorative sweet dessert gift set of Sanji that will have a chocolate and fruit heart cakes with two tea bags, and a special message from Sanji. Let the cashier know before you leave. You’ll also have a chance to take a photo with the characters. No news yet who will be there this summer, but while you’re dining, waiters will escort you to the line so you can take your photo. Once you leave, you can head outside to purchase your photo frame. It’s a load of fun this summer. Updates on the other OP restaurant at the park and merchandise will be announced later. Also, they’ll have a Water Battle where you can watch a mini show of OP and get wet at the same time. Its oodles of fun, and a way to cool yourself off from the scorching heat. Last, but not least, here is the new cover of vol.2 from the novel of Ace that has Thatch and Blackbeard in it. It continues on with Ace’s story before he joined the Whitebeard pirates. Language biography -My Chinese adventure

1. Here I am 18 years old

So, here I am, 18 years old confused monolingual… Finished my community college just to realize that I hate spending so much time in front of computer screens, writing code at nights, powered by coffee and greasy junk food.

18 years old meant that I was an adult, at least both I and law of the country agreed on that… I could buy cigarettes, alcohol and tickets to other countries even if my parents were against it. I didn’t need to ask anyone’s permission. It felt like freedom. Freedom comes with responsibility, but that’s the whole different story.

2. It was time for something big It was time for something big.But for what? When I was younger I liked to travel to nearby cities by busses and hitchhiking. It was a mixture of being lost, on purpose… and finding something new after every trip. Traveling was my form of learning and escaping from problems at the same time.

This time I was really lost.No direction. Hitchhiking for a week didn’t help. Yes, I tried. I needed a new medicine. I tried, like many of us nowadays, to find the answer online. Almighty Google knows it all.I didn’t know what to ask. So I decided to look at my bookmarks.

There was a website I read for more than 4 years. Or so. I guess. It is called Magazeta. They also do a podcast. Not some goofy cast, but LaowaiCast. They discuss everything about China through the eyes of laowais, speak Chinese fluently and seem to have all kinds of fun there in the mysterious country.

3. I decided to join them

I decided to become one of them, join this strange tribe. To become a laowai. A proper living in China laowai. And not an expat, who just hangs out with westerners, but a Chinese-speaking laowai. I figured out how much money I needed to study Chinese for a year, found 2 jobs that’d allow me to earn enough in 3 months. June, July and August. I became a taxi-driver, and began to work at a construction site. Not bad for a guy who majored in programming, eh? At least, there were no computers.At all. No screens, not even sunscreen. None of that, nada! I kept researching my new dreamland, China. Almighty Google told me that for my budget and for language learning Top2 options were Tianjin because Mandarin there is very standard, but it is cheaper than Beijing and Shenzhen, the most Mandarin-speaking city in Guangdong. I chose Shenzhen. It’s tropical and close to Hong Kong. I watched many Hong Kong movies as a kid and was interested in Kung Fu.

After working for 14 hours a day for 3 months I hated my jobs enough and was ready to fly to my dreamland. So I did. I kissed my parents and my girlfriend good bye and started my new scary laowai adventure. 4. I didn’t learn Chinese before went to China I didn’t learn any Chinese before I went to Shenzhen because I read online that it’d destroy my pronunciation forever. So I followed advice of someone Almighty Google led me too. I was proud that I would’t learn broken pronunciation. Stupid. After a few, quite a few days of trains and planes, I arrived in Shenzhen. It was another planet. Humid, incomprehensible, green, terrifying and extremely friendly. No Kung Fu skills required. Beginner friendly.

I ordered a service of an interpreter who would meet me in the airport and help me to get to the hotel, the first and the last time in my life. He was quite surprised when I asked if he has a knife or at least keys when we got to an ATM. It was hard to explain why I sewed my bank-card in my pocket, but he understood that in my country people like to pick pockets. Not the best advertisement for a country, but I was determined and didn’t want to let thieves destroy my plan. 5. Soon I didn’t go to lessons at all So I got a dorm room, figure out where I can buy pillow and started to learn Chinese in class, but soon I found that I was not able to say tones right and I was late for my writing classes on purpose, to skip that annoying dictation where I’d make a mistake in every character. Soon I didn’t go to lessons at all. I joined Wing Chun classes and hung out with other laowais and Chinese folks instead. My roommate also taught me some Chinese, especially survival kind of stuff or how to ask for cigarettes on the street, his teaching skills were particularly awesome when he was drunk. Sometimes when I met my classmates in campus they asked me why I gave up on learning Chinese, I said that I don’t go to classes, but I still learn Chinese. I hated that one guy who said he learns Chinese just to read stuff and that he doesn’t care about speaking since there’s no reason to talk with Chinese people, what a prick! I don’t hate him anymore. At that time I called my approach “just learn”. It meant learning without homework and tone drills. 6. Laowai life was fun I spent 4 months like this. I was so busy practicing wing chun, playing football, buying fake shoes, hanging out and exploring Shenzhen that sometimes I forgot to eat for 2 or 3 days. That’s why I sometimes stole my roommate’s sushi that he’d get for free every night. Thanks to well-cooking people who lived in the girls’ dormitory, I was never hungry. I think I looked so skinny they just wanted to feed me on the level of instincts… Long story short, laowai life was fun, colorful and cheap for those who lived in campus. At least, it was for me. For 4 months or so. And then it was over. The End. Game over. I had to go back home for what I call family reasons. I didn’t finish my 1 year Mandarin course. It was also hard to get my deposit money back, but I did. It was really good for my Mandarin skills. My WeChat was full of contacts. I packed all the tea, gifts I got from strangers in my friend’s dorm and stinky clothes. I was and wasn’t ready to leave. I told my friends that I’d be back for sure, which I doubted.

The END or To be Continued? That is the question. At that moment, I connected language to living in that country. 7. I missed China and Chinese Don’t live in China = don’t learn Chinese. So, obviously I gave up learning languages and broke up with my girlfriend. Luckily, I found a lazy job where I could play my phone almost all the time. For several months I just lived in my memories about China and felt some hole growing inside me. I didn’t understand where it was coming from. One cannot go and live abroad and then come back to the farm and pretend it didn’t happen. It is going to change anyone, no matter how hard this naïve person is trying to ignore it. I needed to fill that emptiness. I tried a few things. They didn’t work. Until one day I saw an ad about learning Chinese just by listening. Like literally sitting on my bottom, which I was already doing, I was even getting paid for that, and learning… Chinese! The language of my dream/nostalgia land. I was nowhere near fluency at that moment. Upperbeginner at best. I missed China and Chinese Pod became my new way to connect to the land of rice and cuteness. That emptiness inside was filled. Except for … it wasn’t. But things were getting better, way better. I felt alive again. Or maybe it was that nice Turkish coffee I was drinking while I listened to Chinese Pod? Then I thought that just listening, even good listening was not enough for that hole somewhere inside me. So I thought I need… people! But I still wanna sit on my bottom so if I find people online, I don’t need to spend extra time after job. Multitasking for the win. 8. I started my new job I found hellotalk and some similar apps with similar names. Hellotalk was the best one, but at that time it was slow, sometimes a message was sent 4 hours or a day later, so I stole people from there by asking their whatsApp number. I started to realize that the missing ingredient in my life, besides people, was Chinese language. I also realized that escapism and dreaming about faraway lands was not an ideal solution. In search of a perfect combination of people and languages, I decided to join a university. I wanted to study Chinese, but they told me that they have teachers, but not so many students want to learn Chinese. Interpretation was not available that year. What a weird year! The only choice was teaching English, which sounded tasty at that moment, since I also wanted to change my job at that moment. I asked for all the details about exams and stuff. It was nice except for the fact that that stinking girl tricked me and I was preparing for master degree entrance exams instead of what I really needed because I was the first one who wanted to join that university that year and she didn’t really know what to tell me. It was a surprise, but I passed it super well, like top2 or something. Probably because I prepared for something way more difficult, thanks to that stinking girl. My score was a big surprise for me, since I’ve never been a top student. At the same time I started my new job. I was a tutor. Teaching kids English.1 on 1. Learning my major by practice. It was awesome. Language became my bread and peanut butter. 9. I found my jam. It was olla. But I still needed jelly! Peanut butter sandwiches are fine, but they’re nothing like peanut butter jelly ones!

That Sunday I planned to have some rest for my brain and body. So I got a lot of nesquik and scrolled mindlessly through countless web pages full of memes and stupid videos. Until I saw an ad for a language learning app on some page where people who learn English hang out. In comments I read that most users were Chinese. These comments were written in a negative tone, but for me it was pure treasure. Here, I found my jam. It was olla. By that time, hellotalk and its clones were deleted and forgotten for a long time, but I gave olla as much of my precious SD storage and space on the screen as it wanted. I liked it for no particular reason, as I thought back then. Now I do understand that other apps couldn’t provide this kind of sense of community as olla did. It was alive, lively and vivid.

10. It was addictive

It was a perfect place for me to practice my languages. My way to do it was to provoke people, often it meant arguing with them. I learned to be provocative in many languages. I also learned to pretend to be from different countries. The most difficult one was Australia. Controversy and gossip were my fuel. It was not just any drama, it was international. Better than Argentinian TV series! I tried many ways to catch attention, I hope that psychologists and my future employers don’t read how much of an attention seeker and drama queen I was. A few times I deleted an app and said it was shitty publically, while actually I loved it but was busy studying in my university and knew that I don’t have enough will power to keep studying while olla was still on my phone, it’d be too much of a distraction. It was addictive. Before I deleted it, I posted my email on olla plaza. Jessica was worried or surprised or something of this nature and wrote me an email. She helped me to deliver my messages to my biggest language buddy. It was one directional isolation and made me way more mysterious than I’ve ever been before. Because of me being such a d... dumbass, many people hated me, but many liked me. Many mentioned that they missed me, I knew it through gossip and screenshots. Imagine the size of my ego at that moment… After a while, I realized what other apps lacked completely and why they didn’t deserve my storage and screen space. Sense of community + drama, gossip and controversy (people crave it) + many people from different countries in the same room. Cultures don’t merge this way in 1 on 1 conversations. Other platforms also have many people from different countries,but they try to find you a match, a perfect partner. Perfect is boring. In olla people didn’t match perfectly and it was beautiful. It was colorful. It was my home anywhere I went. 11. I couldn’t stay like this forever I couldn’t stay like this forever. All of us eventually get boring, also known as serious. I was a university student after all. Gotta be pretentious and stuff. They call it professional. I started to read a lot of SLA (Second Language Acquisition) research, just like people read news or comics. As a result, I realized that my“just learning” intuitive approach to languages was actually consistent with research. Even gossip and drama. But mostly community and compelling input. It is kind of the same thing.

Not only I pretty much filled that emptiness by languages, I also came to the point where my experience met science\research. Like yin and yang.

12. I started to plan to get back to China After that, I decided to get my life together again and I started to plan how to get back to China. I didn’t get any good idea how to do it, but I started to save money and told my classmates and buddies that most probably I will go to China again. Fake it till you make it works every time. I also told some folks on olla about my plan. I really do consider olla to be my hometown and I did find real life friends there. I think it’s safe to say that I spent more time on olla than with my real life friends. I also spent a lot of time with my offline friends, but they can be less available than something tiny in my cheap phonethat opens the door to my friends. Wait, olla is real, so it’s also real life. People there are real. Language learning there is real as well. Wrong dichotomy. So I spent more time in my olla hometown than in another one because it felt warmer and closer.

My best language buddy who already became my friend decided to help me make my second laowai life happen much faster than I imagined and invited me to join olla team. I pretended that I am so cool and need to think for 1 day or so, like it is not a big deal, when in reality it was dreams come true type of deal, at that moment I was already packing my small backpack and getting ready for the second chapter of China. This time it was Guangzhou.

Numbuh 1: Back in 1986 when the world was ruled by an evil adult named Grandfather, numbuh 0 discovered a journal hidden away by a kids next door operative holding within the hopes and dreams of the Kids Next Door, with the journal, dubbed The Book of KND, Numbuh 0 set out and defeated Grandfather. Numbuh 0 then began rebuilding the Kids Next Door, creating it to be politically right and tolerant of other kids beliefs in order to better serve the needs of kids globally. Noting that Grandfather was a former Kids Next Door operative gone bad, Numbuh 0 implemented Decommissioning, once an operative had turned 13, would have their memories of the Kids Next Door erased so they would never endanger the KND. Numbuh 0 was the greatest KND operative of all time. Now some say that that is make-believe and some say that it was true and I, Numbuh 1 believe that it was true and if I ever find the Book of KND, I will write only five words: "I am Kids Next Door". Then Sector v arrives at the MLP Fim season 9 premiere. 30 minutes after they get back to the sector v treehouse headquarters from the My little pony event a horsefly comes to the treehouse hq and it starts flying around it. It witnesses the tv being left on with Beat Bugs still playing on netflix. So Sector V already went to their rooms 5 minutes ago. Numbuh 1 is taking photos of himself in his mlp Discord cosplay costume on his 3rd mobile phone before he sees the fly. He uses his toy star wars lightstaber (anakin skywalker's lightsaber) to try to get the fly out of his room but it won't leave the room so then he presses the emergency exit button, sucking the fly into an air vent. It emerges from the vent into the bedroom of Numbuh 2, who has repeatedly failed at inventing new technology. Upon seeing the fly, he's filled with joy. He takes the fly and puts it in a scanning device and creates a device consisting of 2 tennis rackets that allows him to fly. He flies around and play with the fly until it flies away. It lands in the bedroom of Numbuh 3 who is still in her MLP fluttershy cosplay costume having a fluttercord teaparty with her mlp discord plush, catches the fly with a pink butterfly net and dresses it in an Angel Bunny (Angel-Fluttershy's pet bunny) costume for the tea party but the fly soon takes off the angel the bunny costume and escapes through another vent. The fly comes in Numbuh 4's room while its occupant is practising Kung Fu he attempts to kill it but it escapes through the vent one more time. Wally breaks open his vent and follows the fly as it finally reaches Numbuh 5's room. He goes to let the others know and Numbuh 5 starts taking photos of her nudes with her 2nd mobile phone and starts to send them online. The others then arrive in her room. They're all wanting to do something different with the fly. After a period of thought Abigail instead decides to let the fly go free by releasing it out the window, leaving the others all except Nigel disappointed. Then the fly goes to the Delightful Mansion from Down The Lane, where it turns out to be a machine used by the Delightful Children from Down the Lane to spy on Sector V. They laugh. Back at the Sector V treehouse Numbuhs 1-4 check their messages (numbuh 4 on his 3rd phone-2nd last picture and Numbuh 1 on his 3rd phone-1st last picture). They laugh at Abby's nude pictures.

The Cost of Boba Cravings

UC Irvine is known for a multitude of great things like Sherwood Rowland’s reasearch on the Ozone problem and the unboiling of an egg, but UCI would not be the same without it’s undying love for Boba Drinks. There isn’t one week that is without some club shouting $2 BOBA along ring road. Those little black balls of gelatin and caffeine mixed into luscious solutions of milk and tea make UCI the number one school for boba lovers.

Like all good things, boba drinks come at a cost that can break a hole in a student’s wallet without them realizing it. Boba drinks are quite expensive for a snack to have maybe 5 five or 3 times a week. An average boba lover would have around 4 boba drinks in a week with each drink averaging around $4.50 if the boba lover values quality. This totals to $18 every week to satisfy someone’s boba cravings. Stacking up a total of 10 weeks in a quarter, $180 in one quarter will be spent on boba. These boba cravings can be as expensive as a textbook for students, it’s no wonder why students are resorting to finding online textbooks instead of store bought ones, they just drink too much boba! In the short run, $4.50 doesn’t seem like that big of a price to pay, but looking at the production costs shows that boba sellers really know how to maximize their profit.

Profit is a firm’s total revenue minus their total cost of production. Total costs include fixed costs and variable costs. So how much profit is the boba industry making off of the UCI student’s love for boba? Is this a complete rip off? Milk tea boba has three main components. Tea, which is a typical 1:30 ratio of tea to water, milk/heavy cream, which is readily available in any grocery store, and of course the addons such as boba. The cost of producing one boba drink which is between 15 - 20 oz is actually a mere $0.75 according to Boba Tea Direct. A typical boba drink is sold for $3.50 - $4.00, that’s a profit of $2.75 or more per drink. You could say the boba industry has it pretty well off and it won’t be going down anytime soon. The price of boba isn’t completely outrageous taking in all the other fixed costs to run a boba shop as well as employing workers. Being able to sell an item with a 350% markup price has kept the boba craze well and alive in the business of luscious liquid snacks. Boba seller are in a pretty good industry right now.

In order to find the best boba drinks for consumers, we have to look at the price and quantity of boba drinks from different boba shops. Graphing the price and quantity sold will give us a supply curve that us consumers can determine which equilibrium point would have the most consumer benefit.

The trend line shows the average increase in price per fluid ounce of milk tea including boba. Total consumer benefit would be the dots below the red line which indicates a high quantity for a low price. According to this small boba study I did, Kung fu Tea, Ding Tea, Share Tea, T-pumps, and Half’n Half are the most worth it boba places out of 11 boba places shown in the graph. Theoretically with the equation of the line we can determine the fixed cost of one standard milk tea boba drink. The fixed cost would be the y-intercept which is $2.88, which is strangely large compared to the cost of the ingredients in a milk tea boba striking at $0.75. However, the fixed cost found by the line does not take into account the total profit of a boba industry, so in the long run a $0.75 cost would make sense compared to an initial one drink cost according to the line of $2.88.

Different boba shops sell boba drinks for different prices that isn’t only dependent upon quantity of the drink with boba. This graph just shows the economic quantity to price value of boba for different shops. There are a lot of other factors such as quality of the drink, quality of the boba, and different methods of tea making. These factors are also important in deciding which boba place is the best for you. Boba milk tea has a special place in the hearts of UCI students whether it be through cravings or through the maximum social and economic benefits of getting boba. Now that we know the economic values surrounding boba, we can fully minimize the costs of our boba cravings. It is truly an honor to attend the number one school for boba lovers, UCI.

It’s the D-day to board the Voyager of the Seas! Since our boarding time was in the afternoon (3 pm), I only took a half-day leave and worked from home in the morning. Everything has been packed nicely into our luggage and the luggage tags have been secured. In my previous post, I mentioned that there are two options to bring your luggage on board. Quick tips, if your boarding time is early (e.g. 11 am), you can choose to hand-carry your luggage or check in the luggage and pack some clothes such as swimsuit for changing. However, the queue at the custom may be long for a foreigner (non-Singaporean and non-PR), so bringing a luggage (or more) may not be too convenient. Our boarding time was written as 3 pm but in the trip reminder email, it was stated as 2.30 pm. So we went to the Marina Bay Cruise Center at 1.30pm and reached at 2 pm plus. (See the last part of my previous post on how to get to the Cruise Center)

Boarding the ship!

Upon reaching the cruise center, the bag drop counter was very obvious. There was staff to guide us as well. No scanning required, as long as you have the luggage tag attached, you can just pass the luggage to the staff in charge. As we went into the center, there were signage and staffs along the way to guide us to the immigration checkpoint. You have to get your Set Sail Pass ready. If you book the cruise through a travel agency, they should have done the online check in for you. Otherwise, you may do so yourself at the Royal Caribbean website.

Make sure you empty your water bottle in your hand-carry bag before passing the custom. Also, do not bring prohibited items as well as opened food items. You may check the RC website for the “What Not to Pack” items. There are two lanes at the immigration checkpoint: one for foreigners and one for Singaporeans and PRs. After passing the immigration, we were guided to the boarding area. We had to fill in a health declaration form as well. (Tips: if you are unsure where to get water on the ship, refill your empty water bottle now at the boarding area.) Though the queue can be quite long, there were a few counters in operation. Basically, they need to see your passport and the Set Sail Pass. The staff will take a photo of you and issue you a Sea Pass Card.

Once that is done, you are set to board the ship! Woohoooo! 🙂

In the ship!

The embarkation area was on Deck 4. The crew scanned our Sea Pass Card and we walked into the giant ship! It was so huge that you won’t feel that you were on a ship. It’s more like a shopping mall instead. Royal Caribbean (RC) Voyager of the Seas is 15 Decks tall and 1,020 feet long. Some of its highlighted facilities include 10 pools and whirlpools, basketball court, ice-skating rink, FlowRider surf simulator, mini-golf course, rock-climbing wall, Casino Royale, arcade, theater, dining room, bars, and lounges. Its guest capacity is 4,269 and it has 1,176 international crew! It’s really amazing to see people from all over the world working together on a ship! (Reminds me of Pirates of Caribbean)

Deck 4 is an ideal spot for some nice photographs. As the ship was at the port, the Casino Royale was not in operation. We took some photos before finding our way to our rooms at Deck 3.

Our bags were already at the door when we reached our room. That was fast! However, one of the bags was misplaced at 2 rooms away. We entered the room using the Sea Pass Card. It was a small nice cozy room with a round window facing the sea. The room could fit 4 people as there was 2 additional bed on top of the ceiling which can be pulled down.

4 pm: Muster Assembly Drill

We didn’t stay in the room for long. We went to Deck 5 to explore and we found the Café Promenade packed with people. We had a coffee in a paper cup and there was an announcement made. All guests were required to gather at the assembly point on Deck 4 or 5 (where the rescue boats are) for the Mandatory Muster Assembly Drill (for emergency evacuation). At the sound of the ship’s whistle and alarm bells, we proceeded to our muster station. The muster station number is printed on the right-hand side of the SeaPass Card, where it’s written as an alphabet and a number, e.g. B11 for us. We had to mark our names and room number with the crew in charge when we arrived. I think we were standing there for more than 30 minutes waiting for all the guests to gather. There were old folks who couldn’t take the standing and heat and have to sit on the floor. Poor them. 😦 There were some missing guests who didn’t assemble at the location and they were given serious warning. Some people commented that the announcement was made in English and probably the missing guest couldn’t understand it. (From my observation over the few days, most of the guests for this cruise were from India, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and China.) At last, the crews demonstrated how to put on a life jacket in case of emergency.

Then, back to the room! We were greeted by our friendly room attendant and we got our Cruise Compass! Well, not exactly a “compass”, it’s just a piece of paper which includes all information you need to know on board. Cruise Compass includes information such as:

We went through the Cruise Compass and mark down some key activities to do. (Tips: bring along a pen or highlighter!)

So, here’s what we do on Day 1 for the rest of the day.

5 pm+: Promenade Café and Royal Promenade at Deck 5

We wanted to grab some snacks at the café but it turned out to be even more packed than just now. We saw some crews dressed up in colourful costumes and kids looked excited! It’s time for the DreamWorks Move It! Move It! Parade. It was full of fun and laughter with the familiar Madagascar, Shriek, Kung Fu panda and other characters dancing and parade along the Royal Promenade. (Tips: To get a up close view of them, especially when you have kids who love them, try to standby at Cafe Promenade area at least 15 mins before. The characters will standby at the stairways quite early and you can be sure curious people will start crowding there too. To get a full view, I would recommend you to go up to Deck 6 or 7 balcony where you can look out at the whole stretch of Royal Promenade.) We were quite late when we found out about the show (~5 mins before show start) and even the balconies are full. So we went up to Deck 8. We get a pretty good view too!

5:45 pm: Dinner Time for Main Seating at Deck 4

The official dining time for Main Seating is at 5.30 pm. As we were watching the parade, we were slightly late. The Sapphire Dining room at Deck 4 was already quite full but not to worry as everyone has an assigned table number. Note that some of the tables may be at Deck 3. The crew will check your Sea Pass Card before you enter the room. There were 2 waiters assigned to our cluster of tables and they served us for the other days as well. The main waiter is from the Philippines and the assistant waitress is from Russia. We were served with bread first and given a menu each. Basically we had to choose 1 appetiser and 1 entrée. But the waiter told us that if we were still not full or did not like what we had, we can have another course. We waited quite a while (about 20-30 mins) before getting our food. It turned out that one of the orders was wrong and the waiter quickly get the right one for us, so we ended up eating 4 courses for 3 pax. 🙂 When we were done with the main course, we were given another menu for dessert. Yumz! If you are not keen in the dessert, you can always order a fruit platter or coffee and tea. If you have kids, you could try ordering something the kids would like… like pizza, cakes, muffin… as long as they could find it in their kitchen, they would try their best to fulfill your request. The Waiters and Waitresses are generally very friendly and helpful!

6 pm: Complimentary Ice Show Tickets Distribution

While waiting for our food, I went to collect the Ice Show tickets with our Sea Pass Cards at the Studio B, Deck 3, just right below the Dining Room. (Tips: 1 representative to collect for all members will do, but remember to bring along their cards as well) There were a few timing options to choose from (both on Day 1 and Day 4). The best for us was at 8.30 pm. There was also a complimentary Welcome Aboard Pack given out at the Art Gallery, right outside the Dining Room. The pack includes 1 piece of printed art and other art auction information. You can also get a ticket for art raffle happening at 7.30 pm.

We went back to our room for a quick rest and bath.

7:10 pm: Welcome aboard show starring Duck Cameron the Magician

We missed it due to dinner. 😦

8:00 pm: Get ready for the Ice Odyssey! An Ice Spectacular

So we had our tickets ready and head to Studio B to watch the Ice Show. Studio B is at Deck 3 but it was disconnected so we had to go up to Deck 4, pass through the Casino, and down to Deck 3 again. The door opened at 8:00 pm and there was a long queue! At last we managed to find some good seats and can’t wait for the show! (Tips: Bring along jacket as it was really cold at the ice rink) I don’t remember how long the show lasted, probably 60 mins. It was so enthralling and captivating. My mom enjoyed it a lot! 🙂 We rated it 10/10. Oh, the best part is, try sitting at the left side, on the front facing first or second row. You might get invited by the performers to sit on the “throne seat” and you will be among them in the middle of the ice rink. They will interact with you and you will be the star of the night!

After the show, we went to Cafe Promenade for some supper. They have nice muffins, cheese cakes, pizzas, coffee and tea. They serve different range of snacks at different timing and open for 24 hours! When we came back to Deck 3, La Scala Theatre was showing 3D movie – Martian. We watched for 10 minutes and fell asleep. So we went back to our room and have a good night sleep.

Extra Tips for Day 1!

If you are keen to go Casino, go for the complimentary gaming lesson at the specified timing. You may place a bet of $1 to enter into the $500 off your folio raffle.

There were 2 sessions of Outside Movie at the Poolside. Great experience, but can be quite cold at night.

Casino Royale is not smoke-free! As the casino is the “connecting point” between the front and rear deck of deck 2 and 3, it can be quite irritating if you are not into gambling and don’t feel comfortable with the smoke (with elderly and kids around). You could choose to go via Deck 5 as well.

If you were to purchase beverage package, purchase it on Day 1 to enjoy the most. There are a few options. I think if you are getting the Soda package, you get a free bottle as well. They had a booth to sell the package before the boarding area. Not sure if they accept SGD though. You can also purchase it online.

Palisades Mall and Logan

Figured I’d interrupt the string of “Cebu Trip” posts with a mini adventure I had stateside :3

3-11-17

I was supposed to wake up at 6 or even 5 so that I wouldn’t be rushing to get ready. However, by the time I woke up it was almost 7. And I had to be at Jaymie’s house around 8 or 8:30. So after I turned off the alarms I rushed to take a shower and get ready before heading to get my car from the garage. It was pretty damn cold, not going to lie, but I managed by wearing some uniqlo heat tech leggings and just wearing my usual hoodie/jacket style, so the walk to the garage wasn’t terrible.

When I got to the garage I had to empty out the back of the Jetta because I was planning (or more like hoping) to get a spot right outside my apartment when I get back home way later, which means it would be easier to dump the trunk of the Jetta into my Dad’s Volvo so that I wouldn’t have to do it later. Afterwards, I headed to Jaymie’s house but as I was on the way, she told me she was still getting ready so I offered to buy her and her family Jollibee before arriving. Her parents were eating oatmeal so she just needed longsilog and topsilog for her and her brother, which I ordered to go with my own longsilog.

When I got to her house, her family was awake. I greeted her brother, her Mom, and her Dad then went to the kitchen and waited because I didn’t want to be the awkward one eating while everyone else was still out and about in the house. When her Dad came by to eat I began eating my meal and we talked about my trip - how it was in cebu, the food, the crazy traffic. It was just refreshing to be able to talk about my trip especially when I’m still having some vacation blues - it’s part of the reason why I want to blog about it because it helps me overcome me missing my cousins.

When Jaymie was done getting ready we headed out to Stevens since she had an open house to attend for her masters. It was awesome because due to that event I was allowed to park in Babbio garage without a parking pass (suck it, Stevens Police!) :D After I parked, we split ways with her going to the open house and me just chilling on second floor babbio. The open house took about an hour and a half before she was ready to leave.

After she finished changing in the bathroom, we drove up to the Palisades mall which is always a nice drive. I mean, I’m used to it by now considering how many time’s I’ve gone to my Tito Patrick’s house (different Patrick for the uninformed) that I could probably drive it in my sleep (but I won’t = 3 =) In fact, looking for a parking spot seemed to take way longer than getting there, even though it wasn’t. I mean I half expected that. It’s like the only big mall in the area and it was a Saturday.

We decided to just park outside the target on the fourth floor of the mall. It was outdoors so we’d be exposed and I’d be forced to wear my winter jacket to get to the mall, but at least the walk isn’t as far as it could be. Once we got inside, we headed straight for East Japanese because we were both pretty hungry.

East Japanese was a restaurant that had sushi and other snacks and dishes going around on a conveyor belt. I’ve been there and to it’s sister branches several times but this was Jaymie’s first time. I kinda dove in and Jaymie claims that she turned around for a second and there was already like four plates on the table, but I swear it was only two = 3 =. We got all sort of stuff - shrimp tempura rolls and gyoza, obviously, but also fried octopus/squid legs, tokyo style fried chicken, lobster salad sushi, peppered shrimp tempura rolls (there’s a difference), cream puffs, macarons, and a few other things that slip my mind. Overall it was pretty tasty... let’s just not talk about the final bill LOL

After East Japanese, we went next door to this store called “IT’S SUGAR” which, you guessed, sold a crap ton of candy. It was here where I first ate orange hi-chew, and I was tempted to get some but I knew my Dad was bringing back some from the Philippines so I didn’t get any. I did find a section that was selling bacon everything - bandages, lip balm, etc. - but I dare not try any of it in fear of not liking it like I didn’t like bacon flavored ice cream x.x

After spending a little time at IT’S SUGAR we headed to the theater to watch Logan. Oh boy. If I ever do movie reviews, this one will be... alright. Kinda depressing for the most part but I won’t give anything away... I may have cried near the end but yeah...

After Logan we went to Uniqlo because I needed to get new A-shirts for working out. The ones I have are starting to get old and worn out and I figured I buy Uniqlo everything so why not Uniqlo A-shirts as well = 3 = Sadly, they didn’t have the extravegant colors I wanted like yellow, orange, or even blue, so I figured I’d just buy it online (which I haven’t done yet and might do so after writing this post LOL). What I did end up buying was another hoodie because the one I bought in the Philippines was a different design and a different blue than that one I really wanted (which I didn’t realize until I saw it at the store). I’m still going to be using the hoodie I got in the Philippines, but at least now I have three hoodies to rotate around, and that’s always a good thing (especially when I’ve pretty much been wearing the same hoodie for the past year LOL) Oh, and Jaymie got a jacket for her disney trip in April = 3 =

When we were done shopping at Uniqlo, we headed to Kung-Fu Tea because I wanted a manga green tea. It’s funny because before during the week I had asked Jaymie to get me a mango green tea from the Kung-Fu Tea in hoboken and told her I wanted the tapioca and the mango jellies it usually came with. But when I got it, it was the mango boba instead. So I was like “Let me show you how to order my order” and lo and behold when we got to the cashier they told me they don’t do mango jellies anymore. Yeah. Eff me, right? XD Of course Jaymie rubbed it in my face and of course I deserved it, but I’m still laughing about it even now haha = 3 =

We then went to Coldstone because Jaymie wanted to get ice cream. Initially I wasn’t going to get any because I didnt’ want to eat too much... But then I saw that they had pistachio ice cream which I haven’t had in a while... So I ended up getting that with Reeses Peanut Butter Cups... I was tempted to instead get the strawberry lemonade flavor they had but I figured I just had a sweet green tea so I’d get something creamy... Kinda regret not getting the strawberry lemonade flavor, but w/e. What’s done is done.

Before heading out, we stopped by gamestop to check if they had an amiibo Jaymie’s brother was looking. They didn’t so we headed back to Jaymie’s house where I hung out for a bit. They were watching Way of the Dragon and I saw the fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. Man did that guy get owned LOL After watching, I tried some of her Dad’s giniling, which was pretty good, but just didn’t taste like my Mom’s cooking (obviously I’m going to favor my Mom’s cooking. It just had more flavor though).

After I finished eating and talking with Jaymie and her brother, I headed back home, which wasn’t painful because it was traffic. I tried looking for a parking spot and initially there wasn’t any, but thankfully after going around one more time, this guy was leaving right in front of my building, so I was able to get the spot and thanked God afterwards. Saved me a trip in the cold.

Once I got upstairs, I just did some WoW dailies, then passed out. Yeah, I was pretty tired, but I guess the jetlag just caught up with me. Hopefully my sleeping cycle should be back on schedule, but we’ll see when I wake up tomorrow for my dentist appointment (if I wake up in time for it LOL)
