Mt Kuringgai Granny Flat

The client needed a space of her own, a refuge from her adult children occupying the main house where she could live independently and work on her crafts undisturbed, a true granny flat.

But then came the challenges, a bushfire prone area, services easements and a boundary line that cut straight through the heart of the site unbeknownst to the client.

Bushfire restrictions and noise from the adjacent highway and rail line made for a fortress like construction of traditional formed standing seam cladding.  This austere form is broken only on the southern corner where the boundary runs up against the building cutting away a corner and revealing a softer and warmer side constructed of spotted gum timber.

Internally skylights provide an ever-changing light quality to the space and rooftop whirlybirds provide a low energy ventilation system to escape the heat of summer
