I did a post detailing my manga collection back in 2021, but it's grown a lot since then so I figured I'd make a new post! It was also a good time to do so because we're repainting my room and while there's usually a ton of anime merch in front of the books on my shelves, now it's all been packed up. 🔥 MadoMagi:

The original anime was pretty mediocre and had a mediocre soundtrack. Its fatal flaw is that it tries to center itself around a single main character (Madoka Kaname herself) whose viewpoint we see the world through, but her characterization physically cannot get focus in this format in an anime, because you just don't get to see how deeply screwed up her worldview is if you never know what she's thinking. Consequently, you actively lose information by telling the story in a format other than a novel or VN. (Observant viewers may recognize this as the same ultimate problem behind why adapting FSN for the screen inherently requires getting more exposit-y about Shirou's deal.) Ultimately, I wholeheartedly recommend skipping the MadoMagi TV anime entirely; most of the best parts of the Puella Magi Series are elsewhere and don't expect familiarity with a disappointing TV anime. (The Different Story, Rebellion, and Wraith Arc escape this curse by not being Madoka-centric, instead focusing on more conventional protagonists in Kyouko and Homura.)

Rebellion was a perfectly fine ending in and of itself, and it doesn't need a sequel. The only reason I'm interested in Walpurgis no Kaiten's existence is that it seems to be going so far out of left field that I kind of have to entertain it and find out what the cook is.

Of the "classic" Puella Magi titles (pre-2017, i.e. before Magia Record), I'd rank them like this:

Rankings of Tart and Oriko may be swapped depending on how I'm feeling that day.

This is not to say that Suzune and Kazumi are bad manga, but the former quite infamously ran into production troubles and the latter bit off way more than it could chew, and it shows. Kazumi has a lot of cool plot ideas and themes in play but reading it for the first time can feel like being subjected to a plot point firing squad. The original manga run of Suzune was good but not spectacular -- it didn't truly get to shine until the MagiReco crossover events started happening. (It has been 1200 days since the last Suzune event...)

MagiReco fans often describe Arc 2 as "when it gets good," and it's common to write off Arc 1 entirely as an extended prologue, however I do still maintain that Arc 1 is a good story on its own terms. You can feel the weight of the production issues (there's a very noticeable midpoint shift where a major rewrite happened) but it's still a perfectly fine and coherent story. Most of what the fandom writ large likes to call "flaws of Arc 1" are just, intentional foreshadowing.

When AniReco (the companion anime to MagiReco that tells a completely separate story)'s final batch of episodes originally came out that fateful April 3, I gave the production as a whole a massive side-eye (I distinctly remember logging on and asking a chatroom I was in "what is even happening?? Why is the anime Folklore of Zero propaganda all of the sudden?? Wait, Neo Dorothy Motherfucker???? Huh??????"), but I've since warmed up to it. It's its own thing, and you have to have its place in the series' cosmology and the showrunner's goals in writing it explained to you first before you start watching, and it makes some writing decisions I find to be questionable, but it did a remarkably good job for a series that was slashed from 39 episodes down to 25 halfway through.

Apparently this is a hot take now: I like Nagisa Momoe's actual backstory as detailed in MagiReco a hell of a lot better than "dumb idiot child wished for cheese instead of healing her ailing mother." The collected Nagisa cycle of MagiReco stories makes her arguably the single most interesting member of the Holy Quintet.

I want more Kyubey worldbuilding, goddammit! We know precious little -- the Incubators were created by an advanced alien civilization (local expert Touka Satomi, A1C9), and their tissue is analogous to stem cells and can be reconfigured on the fly (Kosane Kiriha, NMG) -- and I need to know more! What were the progenitors like? Did they wipe themselves out? Actually, now that I think about it, are Incubators like Touhou's shikigami where you take fleshy hardware and flash it with your own artificial intelligence? We know a human can control one (Madoka uses LoC-branded pink Incubators for surveillance purposes) and we know a human can have their soul shoved into one losslessly (mokyu!), so like, what are the limitations here? Hell, the Pleiades made their own once! It sucked at its job, but it existed! How did they do that? Tell meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I think that even in the absence of the Automatic Purification System, being a magical girl is just kind of objectively better than being human. You get to opt out of mortality, you get private(-ish) telepathic communication for free, you get a shrunken hitbox -- no more worrying about workplace safety hazards as long as you protect the gem! -- you get a weirdly specific personal magic that varies in effectiveness from Konomi's baton pass to Iroha's localized time reversal, and even if you don't get something useful you still have a magical weapon that you can spawn on command. That's even before we get into the existence of Coordinators, and the logical applications of their Adjustment magic in gender-affirming care. To be quite honest, if Kyubey ever had reason to approach me, my wish would probably just straight-up be "immediately megucify every human who exists right now and every human who will ever exist in the future regardless of energy cost."

I'm scared of the new Magia Exedra mobage's existence because (1) it's very prominently advertised as being Quintet-centric and I'm sick and tired of the Quintet, and (2) there's a nonzero chance it will take resources away from Magia Record to focus instead on what seems, if the credits on the website are to be believed, to be a shitty autobattler. MagiReco is the best thing the Puella Magi Series has ever done and I want it to survive well past its tenth anniversary.

Okay, seriously, did the entire Tamers fandom collectively forget that, past a certain part of the D-Reaper arc, none of the Primary Colors are actually human anymore? Because it feels like I'm the only one who's acknowledging this, despite the fact that "Ruki, alienated from humanity, voluntarily gives it up, while Renamon, aligned with humanity, is a trans woman" seems like a pretty obvious thread to work with, and being turned into a digital life-form offers plenty of opportunities for neat body horror, not even to mention how this affects the ways in which Ruki's Candy timeline counterpart has steadily been getting worse for two decades.

[Side note: I really need better names for the "more canon" movie timeline that's relevant, essential and true, and the "less canon" drama CD timeline that isn't. If I keep calling them Meat and Candy I'm going to get weird looks from the non-Homestucks.]

There are a ton of Japanese words that mean something else in Finnish which makes anime funny to watch sometimes.

Basically, here's KnB as Finnish words edition

Kuro = imperative form of "reach up to something" especially something moving in front of you, or when you're running out of time and need to make up for it, or to "put pieces back together" especially about mending fabric. Often used figuratively.

I think about this way too often and in way too many ways.

Rima = bar (in sports). Generally any thin or narrow strip of wood or metal or something, often used to mark a standard height. Also often used figuratively about a standard you measure against, just as in English you might say the bar is low or high.

Taka = a prefix that means "back" something, such as backyard or a back cover.

I think about these in many ways too.

Sei = saithe/black cod

Juro = sullen, sulky

I have way too much fun imagining Akashi as a sulky little fish.

Mo-Moi = Kind of rare, slightly dorky, very cheerful way of saying "Bye Bye". The usual form is "Moi Moi" (which any Hetalia lover will know) but some people try to be cute by cutting the first "i".

I just grin when I hear someone say it because it means something else to me first now.

Mura = gravel, grit, uneven or gritty kind of sand.

Muro = cereal

This gift is for you MuraHimu shippers.

Hai = shark

Hata = first sprout

Kouki = imperative of to hook/to cut (in)

Hara = a tool with spikes, especially on field work. Don't know the exact English word...

Koi = moth

Kuda = good, sweet (slang)

Hana = tap, hammer (in firearms)

Hikari = Someone who has no life outside of studying. Quite negative word. Couldn't find an English equivalent.

The irony needs no explanation.

Kai = probably/I think so

It's funny if you listen with Finnish ears when Kuroko pauses a bit saying "Ignite Pass... Kai!" Because it's like "Ignite Pass... Probably!"

he's not that short - he's of average height, really, and yet -- somehow, he still manages to push back the pan that rests on top of the fridge towards the back. irritation swells, and he's half tempted to climb on the counter ( ryou, after all, is not that patient of a person. ) atsushi comes up behind him, and ryou is pressed between the fridge and atsushi as hand rests on waist as the other reaches for the pan that ryou kept pushing back. this would be fine. it should be fine. things are absolutely fine and ryou's nerves are most definitely not on high alert right now. absolutely not, shut up in his mind, ha-chan. get out of his mind actually, you're evicted. see, there are things that ryou knows - such as the fact that the sun rises in the east, sets in the west, atsushi is built fairly proportionate to his size, and the fact that said proportionate man is currently standing behind him, shirtless, with cover-alls half-hanging off of a very well-sculpted body. that's pressed against him. with one hand on ryou's waist, encompassing the entire side, and he's fine. totally, absolutely fine. he has to be fine actually, because atsushi isn't interested in anything and ryou refuses to be that one asshole, who, pushes his friend into something that may make him uncomfortable. still -- body heat curls around him and he releases a very shaky breath for the moment. his head barely hits the fridge. ryou shifts, just slightly, and sweater falls off of shoulder, and he feels atsushi look down curiously -- and he knows this because he feels purple locks of hair brush against bare shoulder. ryou bites his inner cheek. fuckfuckfuckfuckfu-. atsushi moves away bringing the pan down and ryou - half saddened that the other has left his immediate bubble, immediately tosses that thought out of the window ( it isn't useful and he's determined to ignore it. ) instead he turns, after taking the half-second to toss thought out of window and to breath, to look up atsushi who is looking down at him. he smiles, ignoring the way his stomach feels like it's trying to hang itself with his other insides. mura, as per usual, is minding his business. he’s comfortably sitting somewhere between drifting through his own thoughts and just barely following along the conversation at hand. tatsuya and og mostly, anyone else who speaks are just adding their two cents from what he could tell — from the last time he bothered actually tuning in, if nothing else. he doesnt ( didn’t? ) particularly care about what they were talking about, something about… he doesn’t remember, actually. whatever. all he knows is that this butter pecan ice cream that og made earlier is really food.

the spoon is still in his mouth when ryou speaks to him, not that he really notices until after his hand is being taken away from him and he blinks back into focus. something something something, hands / he hums in question and ryou’s wrapping their hand against his index finger. their hand is so small in comparison. someone giggles and mura knows it’s hara. ( hara giggles over everything. ) lost on why this was a thing that was happening, he slowly pulls the spoon from his mouth with free hand.

“ wha-? ”

ryou proceeds to free his finger, slowly twisting their wrist and pressing their palms together, fingers splayed and mura only now truly takes in how small ryou is compared to him. or, really, how large he is compared to other people as the memory of hara holding his hand while sitting in his lap the other day flashes in their mind. he shifts in his spot, head tilting as he interlocks their fingers. “ kuro-chan’s tiny… ”

and really, now that he thinks about it / mura brings his other hand to ryou, palm over the back of the hand he’s holding. he gives a light squeeze, noting just how cold their hands are — sure, yes, his are too, but he was just digging about in a bowl of ice cream until his hand was stolen from him. “ and cold. ” brows furrow, gaze finally moving from hands to their face. “ are your hands always this cold? ”

a few days late because my job is kicking my ass lately, but i've got another batch of little reviews of stuff i've been checking out. take a look!

Doctor Who: The Fifth Doctor (Seasons 19-21)

it only took 20 years but this show is truly getting good i think. you can start to see where the DNA of the reboot comes from, especially how davison's performance would influence tennant's - and what a sendoff he got in the end, some really wild shit happening there. not much more to go now

Faraway Downs

a lot more digestible than the movie it was edited from, and makes me ponder if it shouldn't have just been this way from the start. the changed ending feels more in line with the rest of baz's ouvre, given his penchant for tragic deaths - but i'm not sure it's a better ending for this in particular. otherwise, everything from the movie applies, good and bad

Checkmate - Malorie Blackman

a strong conclusion to this first trilogy, about healing from the scars of your past and focusing on the ones who are here now. some elements feel all too real to this day, and it's heartbreaking. believe in something better

Iron Man 3

james bond by way of marvel while grappling with tony's actual damage instead of just libertarian-ing all over the place. disappointing that they did "What If Iron Man But Evil" yet a fucking gain but once i get past my annoyance at that, they do make it kind of work, and tony getting down in the dirt and getting to know actual regular people was really fun. good start, phase 2. try and keep it up please

Ben 10 Versus the Universe: The Movie

this was distinctly pretty okay, definitely far more enjoyable than the nonsense that the live action movies are, and there was some poignancy to it all - gwen and max thinking ben might be dead, ben having similar worries on his end, azmuth's test pushing him to be better than he can be. it may be a bit rote hero's journey stuff, but ben 10 has always been extremely by the numbers - it's no different here. my main gripe is that for being a movie, they really don't push the animation much. this genuinely looks like it could've been split into a 5-6 parter to cap off the last season of the show and there would be no obvious difference, and for all i know it probably is aired this way when the show is in syndication.

The Wolverine

watched the extended edition. man i just zoned the fuck out of this one. some nicely shot action at least but i just didn't have the mental energy to follow the plot and the silver samurai stuff was dummmbbb. very unmemorable

The Mandalorian (Season 3)

honestly really not that bad if you take it for what it is rather than being mad that it's not alien force Like Some People. fun redesigns, some decent comedic writing and mixed additions to the rogue's gallery (extreme pass on breaker 1-9 and nanny nightmare, but xingo, the bugg brothers and tim buktu are fun). don't go in demanding deepness or tight canon or worldbuilding (factors ben 10 as a franchise has never actually been all that good at if we're really being honest) and you can have a fun time

this must have seemed like a shock to the devs of mkwii but it turns out when you don't entirely fucking explode the player for the crime of existing near first place, the game is actually fun and enjoyable, and i want to play more of it

not as good as the first season IMO, but still some fantastic and beautiful animation from around the world. the aardman short got me good. i saw you grand day out robot

works just as good in manga format as the anime did, although it doesn't have quite as good an ending. keiichi arawi has an impeccable sense of timing that shines even in manga format, and their ability to take comedy to great extremes in their art is hilarious

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey - The Fate of Atlantis

well that was a load of nonsense. AC's take on greek mythology was admittedly pretty cool to see but it was just a lot of meandering in the end. a surface level tour with some juno teasing at the end which i'm pretty sick of tbh

AD:PIANO VIVACE 2 - Diverse System

pretty good but not stellar. little really stuck out to me as truly awesome, even BlackY's track was kind of a let down. still, nothing actively bad here.

it feels wild that thus far captain america consistently outdoes every other MCU movie. i didn't think i'd be this on board with him when i decided to start catching up. a great spy thriller that managed to contain a ton of engaging plot threads without feeling overstuffed and overlong, and genuinely left me pretty excited for more

i've been watching along here and there with english subs on but specifically, it looks like they're the english subs written for the french dub...? they use first names for everything... kind of a shame, as i think all the nicknames lends to an understanding of their relationships

mura's nicknames seem inconsistent with aka and kuro in a teikou ep and then changing to seiju and tetsuya in present time

aomine/momoi's tetsu is not shortened, it's shown as a full tetsuya???

the mando dub is consistent, as i can hear the nicknames. they chose the characters 哲也 for tetsuya, so aomine/momoi call him 阿哲 (a-zhe). kise calls him 小黒 (xiao hei)

Does anyone know why Oriko Magica was illustrated by Kuroe Mura in the first place? I don't know how manga artists for a pre-existing project (like licensing a tie-in novel in the West, as opposed to the artist creating their own manga) are chosen, but like... surely there were better options available to pick from? Surely whoever in Magia Quartet was in charge of Oriko didn't think their style was the best?

sociieties asked: mura has absolutely no idea how they’ve gotten here — just that it’s once again only him and kuro-chan in the kitchen and that he needs to stop touching things. today, it’s kuro-chan / having turned around for all of maybe three seconds to put something in the sink, but he turns back to face the other, kuro-chan has honey all over their hand. ( stop touching things, atsushi. ) he doesn’t think about it, mouth empty as he takes honey covered hand by the wrist and raises it to his mouth, licking it off without ever breathing a word. ( okay. so many hara was right about him putting things in his mouth. sue him. )

ryou's in the kitchen, atsushi is with him, and he had been humming astroboy by suggi, as he's prepping to cook a few korean dishes for supper. ( having gone in the opposite direction of extreme spice / he had decided to sweeten things up for that evening. ) and had decided to prep everything and let things rest before he started to cook. he had needed the honey for the honey butter fried chicken -- but then he remembered the berries and everything that he had gotten at the store; and ended up making omija punch since he knew that momoi-chan liked it, throwing the honey in last. ( something non-alcoholic / but fruity none the less ) unfortunately, it gets on his fingers and hands - as honey tends to do when you pour it out from a measuring cup. the worst thing - about honey , is that it sticks to everything, and ryou is staring down at his hand blinking. ( that's the worst part about cooking, really. ) okay, no problem, just wash it off. he's about to ask atsushi to move when the other takes his hand and raises it to his mouth, to lick off the honey. eyes wide and face turning bright red as he stares up at atsushi, as tongue wraps around digits, before his fingers are entering the other's mouth and ryou lets out a choked noise, completely forgetting about the punch that needs to be stirred ( the cup of honey, now resting at the bottom of the punch ). momoi, hearing something, looks over - and then she's hitting og and kazuya, possibly even tatsuya, whose sitting on kazuya's lap - both sitting next to her - her mouth dropped open. " guysguysguysguysguys- " she's still hitting them. tatsuya blinks down at her, pulling just away from at the nape of kazuya's neck to and he drops a hand to grab the wrist that is still hitting them to stop her, and follows her eyes , dropping her wrist. tatsuya, softly, " what the fuck. "
