English Just 'Badly Pronounced French', Paris Academic Says (Tom Barfield, Barron's, March 09 2024)
"French linguist Bernard Cerquiglini would like to send a copy of his new book, "The English language doesn't exist: it's badly pronounced French", to King Charles III. (…)
Norman French's use by the new colonial aristocracy endowed English with words that at first glance might look homegrown, like "cabbage", "lure" or "wage", in the 150 years after William the Conqueror took the throne.
But Cerquiglini is most interested by the 13th and 14th centuries, when French -- by then a second language used in trade, administration and law -- bled freely into English because "a job, fortunes in land or cash, upholding a contract, liberty or even one's life, could depend on mastering" the tongue.
Half of English's borrowings from French took place from 1260-1400, producing words like "bachelor", from the old French word "bachelier", meaning a young noble not yet a knight.
"Travel" is related to the modern French word for labour, "travail", while "clock" stems from the French "cloche", a bell struck to sound the hours before mechanical timepieces were invented.
By the time Shakespeare came to write his plays in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, around "40 percent of the 15,000 words in his works are of French origin", Cerquiglini notes.
These days the place of "Anglo-Saxon" words in modern French can stir defensiveness in Paris, often from the Academie Francaise, charged since 1635 with preserving the language in its "pure" form.
"Language in France is official, of the state, national. And so of course we have an academy" whose members enjoy "a ridiculous outfit, a sword, a palace by the Seine" river in Paris, Cerquiglini said.
In recent years the academy has railed against imports related to Covid-19, such as "cluster" or "testing", as well as tech terms like "big data".
Cerquiglini said the academy has scored some worthwhile wins, such as convincing the French-speaking world to use the native-sounding "logiciel" instead of the once-omnipresent "software".
But he added: "This isn't an invasion, these are French words that have gone for training in England and that are coming back to us.""

AI and the value of labour (but only if it's yours)
Few of you have missed the whole AI/AI-art/ChatGPT-debate by now and even though few have the technical literacy to actually know what it is and its implementations, it hasn't stopped people from having opinions on it, and wow they sure are Opinions. It's mainly about how it's art-theft and will put already struggling artists out of business because now there's a chance that their dandelion found in a deviantart furry artwork they made using GIMP once will now be seen made sort of in the same style on a 250x250 pixel generated picture from a free online generator. And now I'm going to be snarky about it but also highlight a problem seen from the other end of this - the value of labour, and I'm not talking about the artists labour here.
But first let's look back a little bit for some well-needed perspective:
The logic for this is nothing we haven't seen before; you can't copy art and have it made available for just everyone to use like this! In the early 2000's it put musicians out of business and destroyed music forever with the introduction of napster. Pirate bay is why movies no longer are being made. It has destroyed art as we know it when people tauntingly right-clicked on a cryptobro's NFT and clicked "save as" (which I assume is also very problematic for the people who are vehemently against AI art? It's a literal 1-to-1 copy of your work). Media corporations are dying because intellectual properties are no longer protected under the copyright laws after 70 or so years. In the 90's there was even some video star who literally murdered a radio star. With the introduction of vinyl, it even killed live music forever.
So technology has been destroying just about all forms of art as we know it for a while now and each time it's the same doomsday predictions from the newly formed kind of art-christianity where some art has soul (Good, Skilled Laboured artists) and others hasn't (Evil, of course).
Now for the informative part of the post:
In the 1970's, computers as we know them today began forming, and with it, the value of a computer programmers skill and labour. Alongside with this, they saw a growing problem: Corporations owned everything they made, and corporations will also have the whole say about what will be present on a computer and the price of everything present on it.
This was not very appreciated by neither the programmers, and nor the customers (although few saw this growing problem coming). So in a weird twist of fate, programmers became one of the most left-wing labour-rights occupation you could find by forming Free Software Foundation, GNU, and essentially setting the stage for you to be able to use the free GIMP software instead of buying a staggering price for Adobe's Photoshop. It enabled you to download firefox instead of buying a copy of internet explorer. Because yes, before this kind of software activism formed, and the general environment of software development became to make it as freely available as possible - and having an outright despise for corporations like Novell and Microsoft for taking such huge amount of money to their own pockets instead of the developers, literally every piece of software cost money. A LOT of money.
This kind of 100% for free software usage we're used to has also led to us no longer being appreciative of the work and skill that goes behind keeping a software not only developed and updated continuously for decades, but also spending money on keeping it hosted and delivered to you for free. We even joke and scoff about the mere thought of having to pay 0.99 Euro for an app we'd use daily and a developer spent 2 years in the making. Meanwhile, when someone offers to pay someone merely 10 euro or so for a handmade blanket, there's an outrage about the value of labour and skill. And rightfully so! I support that, and so should you, even if it's labour that you weren't the one making.
And it doesn't end there either - we all know corporations has no trouble finding new ways to charge you money. Organisations like Free Software Foundation, various Linux projects and Mozilla have campaigned for a freer usage in general, leading to fair-use laws, campaigning for the right to repair your technology instead of having to buy new one all the time, as well as preventing corporations from banning every other piece of software on a computer that they don't want you to have (from a competitor or free alternative of their software).
I mentioned Adobe specifically, because in the wave of anti-AI-art outcry, artists are campaigning for a ban on making software that uses other peoples artistic similarities (not copies mind you, similarities, meaning making it a copyright infringement to have art that is similar to yours, since that's what AI-art algorithms create), and I'm sure right off the bat many of you can see the huge problem with that, but Adobe sure isn't. They're also gladly in on this, because that would mean that free alternatives of Photoshop like GIMP would also become a copyright infringement. So would a lot of our other free software we use daily and take for granted.
That's all I wanted to say about this I think. The TL;DR version is basically to value labour even if it isn't yours, and to not take it for granted. As a final part to remember about AI is that it is a tool, and like any tool it can be used for good or evil. AI is what made it possible for us to make sense of the large hadron collider data and made enormous leaps in scientific discovery in just a few years, that would otherwise had taken 500 years to sort through by humans, and with a much higher rate of error.

Hundreds of people wrongly convicted in the Post Office scandal are set to have their names cleared under new legislation planned by the government.
The law is expected to come into effect by the end of July and will apply to convictions in England and Wales.
It will apply to convictions meeting specific criteria and is expected to clear the majority of victims.
The government said the possible exoneration of some genuinely guilty of crimes was "a price worth paying".
Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted due to faulty software.
Incorrect information provided by a computer system called Horizon, developed by Japanese firm Fujitsu, meant that sub-postmasters and postmistresses were prosecuted for stealing money.
Many of those convicted went to prison for false accounting and theft. Many were financially ruined.
Some sub-postmasters caught up in the scandal have died or taken their own lives in the intervening years. So far, 102 convictions have been overturned.
Keith Bell had been a sub-postmaster in Stockton-on-Tees since 1985, but like hundreds of others, he started noticing discrepancies in his accounts after Horizon was installed in his branch.
He called Post Office helplines, but was given little support. He spent more than £12,000 of his own money to make up the shortfalls, and eventually delayed some transactions to try to balance the books.
He was convicted of false accounting in 2002 and had to do 200 hours of community service.
He didn't challenge his conviction at the time, as he didn't have the means to take on the Post Office, and he believed he had been at fault.
But now the 75-year-old wants his name cleared and expects his conviction to be quashed.
"I'm relieved they are going to quash all the convictions, which is long overdue," he said in response to the announcement on Thursday. "It's a relief to be able to talk to friends. It's a relief to be able to look people in the eye now."
Post Office scandal: The Horizon saga explained
How do the Post Office scandal compensation schemes work?
The issue was thrust back into the spotlight by an ITV drama, Mr Bates vs the Post Office, earlier this year.
Criticism had said that the process for overturning convictions and getting compensation was far too slow.
There are three main schemes aimed at groups of victims who had different experiences of the scandal - but the schemes have been accused of being long-winded and complicated.
Announcing the plans, Post Office Minister Kevin Hollinrake said the legislation was likely to "exonerate a number of people who were, in fact, guilty of a crime".
But he said: "The government accepts that this is a price worth paying in order to ensure that many innocent people are exonerated."
Some 700 people were prosecuted by the Post Office. Another 283 cases were brought by other agencies including the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Prosecutions by the DWP will not be quashed under the new law.
Mr Hollinrake said the new legislation would overturn all convictions that met certain criteria. It will only cover:
convictions from the Post Office and CPS
"relevant offences", such as theft and false accounting
sub-postmasters and their employees or family members
cases where the offence took place during the time that the Horizon system (and its pilots) was in operation
cases where the convicted person was working in a Post Office that was using the Horizon system software (including relevant pilot schemes)
cases in England and Wales
However, the government said it would work with the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Executive to ensure their schemes to quash convictions were "compatible with the UK compensation scheme".
Labour MP Kevan Jones said he welcomed news of the legislation but added it was vital that the government set aside enough time for the new law to be passed "as quickly as possible".
"There are some initial key questions that need answering, including whether the Post Office's Capture system counts as a 'pilot' of the Horizon system for the purposes of this bill."
Mr Hollinrake added that he recognised the "constitutional sensitivity" of the planned legislation, but added it did not set a precedent for the future relationship between the government, Parliament and the judiciary.
"The scale and circumstances of this prosecutorial misconduct demands an exceptional response," he said.
"We are keen to ensure that the legislation achieves its goal of bringing prompt justice to all of those who were wrongfully convicted as a result of the scandal, followed by rapid financial redress."

Hello! I was hoping that maybe you would consider reposting what you had to say about ai art and qo3 in a different post? 👉👈 the OP of that post has made it unrebloggable which fair enough but I'd really be able to have you meausred take to point to when people ask me about it
congrats it's this post! originally written dec 1/22: (context/unrebloggable post here)
data scraping to train AI is really common and if you post things in public places you can expect machines to be fed it these days. nobody asks permission of you. even if they should. if it's on the internet it can be downloaded and will be downloaded and often repurposed/redistributed/repackaged/resold. even if it's behind log-in walls and paywalls.
this is not the first time for-profit AI has been trained on copyrighted works (x)
if this is true that Sudowrites has scraped Ao3, archive-locking all your existing works will not remove them from the dataset. archive-locking any subsequent fics may exclude those from future datasets.
however it is easy to simulate being logged on using a script (x)
this information is only a day old and yet to be confirmed beyond "seems fucking likely"
ao3 has been made aware of it and has requested people stop sending in support tickets about it
elon musk sure is a guy but he is not personally involved in this. he left openai, the research group that produced the tech used by sudowrites, in 2019 (x)
this is a very new field with developing legal precedent and the social and ethical concerns of AI trained on human labours to reproduce similar things for cheaper are not going to go away anytime soon. i hope more people get involved in the discussion because of this!
i understand otw has a legal fund so maybe fanfic will become a part of that case law. that would be neato
on a user by user basis, personally, i am sitting tight. i am unsurprised. the notion of stories made for free and out of passion being fed into a sausage maker to train software that can sell stories for cheaper than the rates of the humans who do get paid for it is distressing. nonetheless i am not going to archive-lock my fics at this time because probably 98% of my reading consumption was as a guest and i think if algorithms get our stories humans without accounts should too. i am also not confident it would change anything at this point. i respect anyone's decision to archive-lock their stories and understand the desire to do so. i am privately extremely relieved to be on the right side of wall bc two months ago i'd be wondering where all my half-read fics had gone hahaha

97000 Indians held trying to enter illegally - Ever wondered why?
Tumblr media
According to US Customs and Border Protection data, a record-breaking 96,917 Indians were apprehended while unlawfully crossing into the US between October 2022 and September 2023. This marks a fivefold increase compared to 2019-20.
Although this news is not shocking to anyone, it is shocking when discussing the magnificence of our country. I've seen over the years that Indian expatriates write more about their affection for their own country. Regretfully, they have no desire to go back to India and aid in its growth. People who do not reside here are trolling those who write about the issues we face.
Our beloved Prime Minister is unquestionably a fantastic leader with a vision to improve India, but that doesn't mean that young people can’t voice their concerns and opinions. In reality, when you make your opinion in a civil manner, society benefits. Yes, in a polite way.
One of my cousins, who excelled in GTU's IT programme, was employed by a reputable private company in this area. She was earning a meagre wage while working a certain number of hours. Due to our large population, we have little opportunities and no labour laws. She later travelled to the USA. In less than a year, she managed to land a position as a software engineer, receiving a respectable salary in addition to recognition for her degree. She's also got her mental health back.
One of the women I met was having marital issues. Her life has gotten worse as a result of her decision to file for divorce. She needed to isolate herself from civilization. In society, even her parents experienced some form of psychological abuse. Her only goal in life was to move to Australia, live a dignified life, and become financially independent.
Here, girls are entitled to their parents' property, but if they have a boy, they are not entitled to it, and in such cases, they must stay at their parents' home as guests.
One of my friends was having trouble getting a job. He spent five years without a job while he studied for the government examination. It was harder for him because he belongs to the general category. His family wants him to immigrate to Canada in any way possible since they believe that society has wrecked his mental health.
A man who lives in Ahmedabad's Old City and comes from a lower middle class household. He and his family had great hardship in society, but ever since his family immigrated to Canada, he has gained some notoriety.

Rise Or Fall? The Complete Understanding Of Metaverse From The Philosophical, Cultural, Scientific And Social Perspectives
There are many recent popular films on ‘Metaverse’: Everything Everywhere All at Once, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Free Guy.
Technology company WayRay promotes its new kind of 'human world' as this: humankind has long been fascinated with a different reality—a different plane of existence, a different identity and a new perspective. To interact with a different reality might have been a dream decades ago, but now it is as real as the phone you are holding today. The technology is now mature enough, and we can all reach into the ‘Metaverse’.
What exactly is a ‘Metaverse’? It was said, “The meta-verse ('Meta’ + ‘Universe') is a virtual ‘reality space’ on the internet where a user can create a ‘human identity’ to live, interact and play, as well as experience things that he could always do in the real world."  Metaverse will be another globe running parallel to and circumventing the existing world. The term came from a science fiction Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson in 1992 and the story depicted a virtual world on the internet that has buildings, roads, parks and shopping malls in which we could enjoy ‘a collateral life’.
It was pointed out Metaverse has 8 characteristics: (1) living under a virtual identity (2) getting along with new virtual ‘co-beings’ (3) instant and spontaneous movements by you commanding your extended identity in the virtual environment (4) an ‘as-if-real’ immersive experience in the virtual world (5) doing the great things which are humanly impossible for you to try in real life such as flying and roles transforming (6) the self-functioning economy of Metaverse by which you can become rich (7) vast supply of fascinating games and contents; and (8) co-building a ‘post-modern human civilization’.
Metaverse was made possible by scientific achievements. The advent of new technologies like 5G or 6G mobile network, Web 3.0, AI (Artificial Intelligence), VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality) solved many technical problems. The necessary equipment to operate Metaverse is expensive and includes special headset, personal computer, mobile phone, web, projection and kiosk. The ‘money’ transactions there involve innovative softwares like De-Fi (Decentralized Finance), IPFS (Inter-planetary File System) and NFT (Non-fungible Token). Mark Zuckerberg announced that ‘Meta’ (formerly known as Facebook) would soon file patent applications for a number of useful devices such as a pair of ultra-sensitive gloves to make 'Meta' bodily experience almost real. Can you afford all these?
Perhaps I am old, if not senile. The real world is already burdensome enough on a daily basis. My sure horror will come from the additional labour and toil associated with consuming a few hours per day on living in another artificial Metaverse. I get enough, if not more than enough, friends. Why should I meet more virtual people in the disguise of different identities and a lot of them may be crooks? I, nevertheless, envy the energetic ones who can handle two lives and two worlds.
I ask around to find out my friends’ interest on Metaverse. A said, “Communication technology simply makes people unnecessarily busy!” B said, “It’s cool! I want to be a powerful KOL or KOC in such a brave new world.” C said, “If I can make lots of money there, why not? I’m planning to buy some lands there.” D said, “I will be horrified when my 22-year-old girlfriend in Metaverse turns out to be an 80-years-old man!” E said, “Would it be lawful or immoral to attend a drug party in Metaverse?” F said, “How exciting it will be since I can hold a big concert there in the face of Michael Jackson?” G said, “I will transform myself into the most gorgeous girl there and attract loads of boyfriends!” H said, “I am afraid of sexual harassment. An English female beta tester was once groped by a stranger on Horizon Worlds!”
There is a famous philosophical story (莊周蝶夢)(Zhuang Zhou & Butterfly)of our ancient scholar Zhuangzi(莊子)(about 369 to 286 B.C.) that every Chinese knows. Zhuang dreamed that he was a butterfly.  He suddenly woke up and found he was still himself, solid and human. He was puzzled and left us with his great theory of Taoism. “Am I really a man that dreamed of being a butterfly or whether I am a butterfly dreaming as a man?” This great Chinese thinker tried to challenge what we took as real might be unreal and what was unreal might be real. Perhaps he was the first one who inspired us on virtual reality thousand years ago. The French philosopher R Descartes (1596-1650) said, “No certain indications by which we may clearly distinguish wakefulness from sleep.” The development of Metaverse as the popular ‘second reality’ will lead more people to pursue a hot debate: can young people in the 23rd century choose to live in a virtual world of butterflies and refuse to live in a human world?
The other amazing Chinese ancient fairy tale protagonist is ‘The Monkey King’. It is based on the ancient story Journey to the West(西遊記) about a famous monk Xuanzang (玄奘) (602-664) who travelled on foot from China to India for the authentic Buddhist scriptures, escorted by Monkey King(孫悟空). This monkey was clever and rebellious. He acquired an immortal life and could transform him into seventy-two different identities in different situations at the same time. Riding clouds in the sky as a vehicle (Monkey King today will probably use Internet as his vehicle), he was able to travel 108,000 miles by a single somersault to meet friends. Would the Metaverse users dream of being a butterfly or Monkey King which were all old prophecies of ‘virtual reality’.
Many predict that your digital existence will become more important than your physical life. In the Metaverse, your life is fascinating with all that you can enjoy. But on earth, you may be lonely and miserable. Virtual life may be joyful. A real life can be sad. Nevertheless, the more humans lose themselves in a non-existent world, the more Artificial Intelligence technology will control us in future. I do not want to live in the virtual world because it will not give me a nice haircut! Do you? Happiness boils down to simplicity.

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the opposition left-wing SYRIZA, on Wednesday filed a motion of no-confidence in the conservative government of New Democracy leader and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis over the wiretapping scandal.
The Authority for Communication Security and Privacy ADAE, on Tuesday, sent its findings on the wiretapping case to the speaker of parliament and the party leaders.
For almost a year, the government has been buffeted by revelations about the surveillance of politicians, journalists and others by the National Intelligence Service, NIS, and the use of illegal Predator software.
The government has only admitted that Nikos Androulakis, president of PASOK, the third largest party in parliament, was under NIS surveillance. However, Androulakis and the journalist Thanasis Koukakis was also a target of the illegal software.
Tsipras presented six names that, according to ADAE’s report, were monitored by the NIS: Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs; Konstantinos Floros, head of the General Staff; Charalambos Lalousis, chief-of-staff of the army, the former General Directors of Defence Equipment and Investments Theodoros Lagios and Aristides Alexopoulos, and Alexandros Diakopoulos, a former security advisor.
Tsipras accused the government and the PM of guilt and of endangering Greek security. “The Prime Minister and the government are deeply guilty; they are dangerous for democracy and for the country’s security; that is why I am filing a motion of no confidence against the government.”
By law, parliament can only withdraw its confidence from the government following a motion of no confidence, which must be signed by at least one-sixth of all MPs.

Why your business needs an ERP
Resource management is an essential component of any business. Inefficient management can harm a company's reputation and cost it a lot of money, whereas efficient management can make it lucrative. Efficient management using ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solutions implies a tough procedure for eliminating resource waste. It raises people's standard of living. It assists in optimizing and increasing revenues, which is beneficial to businesses, while also guaranteeing that society receives the most output for the least amount of money.
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a method of collecting and arranging data from many departments within an organization. It collects and consolidates data from all business areas into a single system. To facilitate the procedure, the data stored is then suitable for sharing at multiple levels.
Why ERP Systems are important?
Finance, accounting, supply chains, inventories, and important HR duties such as scheduling are all covered by an integrated ERP system. An ERP is essentially a centralized program that manages all of a business's vital functions. It also increases decision-making skills based on facts.
Let's talk about the benefits of an ERP system for your business.
Integrating Everything
ERP centralizes and distributes data in a single system, giving you access to everything you need to know. This guarantees that data is correct, up to date, and linked across all entities and internal operations. The key advantage is that it saves time by eliminating the usage of paper and eliminating data duplication across many systems.
Businesses can now automate tedious procedures such as inventory management, job assignment, work schedule management, salary distribution, and accounting statement compilation in a snap.
Promotes Teamwork
Teamwork within departments is an important and frequently required feature of running an organization. An ERP system removes boundaries across departments within a business. By storing data in centralized and uniform ERP software, a department can access data from all other sectors.
Data in Real Time
When adopting an ERP solution, decisions could be made based on actual real-time data that is available across the system. One may receive all of the most crucial and precise information at the stroke of a button, and ERP provides your management with the insight needed to move your organization forward swiftly.
Operating Expenses at a Minimal level
ERP systems also help firms decrease costs. Since the majority of operational tasks are automated, there may be numerous disruptions, inefficiencies, and faults. All of the complicated jobs could be executed faster, resulting in a shorter lead time. Businesses can also minimize labour costs since ERP solutions manage a variety of day-to-day duties.
Advancements to Inventory Control
If your manufacturing process contains a considerable amount of stock/inventory, better management in these areas will benefit your business.  incorporating an ERP system into your organization enables you to manage your product life cycle and optimize inventory management more efficiently.  You can quickly and easily maximize your resources by using real-time stock tracking instead of attempting to estimate quantities, procedures, and other aspects.
Data Security That Works
Highly specialized security and monitoring components, user-based access and access boundaries, password protection laws and encryption standards, and other features in an ERP system ensure data security and safeguard businesses from harmful network attacks. The system collects all data in one place for easy monitoring by the access points. Administrators in charge of the company's data can grant employees restricted access permissions.
Factors When Choosing an ERP Software
Every business has its own set of requirements. There are a few factors to consider when choosing ERP software.
The ERP software's potential solution is to know and understand your company's problems. Extend all of your criteria with your provider so that they may provide you with an ERP system that meets your specs and functionality demands.
The number of changes necessary often determines how long it takes to implement an ERP. The more tailored the implementation, the longer it takes. Adoption of cloud-based ERP is often faster and easier than traditional ERP implementation. Hence choose the ERP solution that is most suited and useful for your business.
Support is required at all stages of a project, including requirement analysis, project planning, implementation, configuration, training and mentoring, and post-implementation. If there are any problems with the system or if you have any questions about it, make sure your ERP vendor can be reached swiftly.
Users can quickly integrate and modify an ERP program. In this regard, make sure that the ERP software you choose can be quickly scaled to meet the needs of your firm.
A low-cost ERP system may be useful in reducing company costs. Low-cost software installation, on the other hand, may take longer and produce less effective outcomes. If the organization has extremely complex management requirements, an ERP system that can handle them is required.
To sum up,
Managing a business utilizing manual or out-of-date methods can only lead to your business falling behind. ERP aids in the simplification of multiple complex procedures, the improvement of performance, the reduction of expenses, and the optimization of a company's profitability. It applies to all sizes of businesses, including small, medium, and large ones.
Whether you are a new small business owner or an established company trying to improve your business, loopsERP can help.

How to Effectively Track and Manage Time in Lieu for Your Team?
Clear policies and effective systems are necessary to track and manage time-in-lieu for your team effectively. To begin with, make clear the rules regarding when and how staff members can accrue and use time off. Using time tracking tools, spreadsheets, or specialised software, put in place a dependable tracking system. Make sure your staff is aware of their accrued time and knows how to request and use it by having regular communication with them. To further guarantee fairness and avoid inconsistencies, periodically check time-in-lieu balances. You can efficiently manage time-in-lieu for your team while encouraging equity and productivity by upholding open communication, precise tracking, and unambiguous guidelines.
Tumblr media
Managing Time in Absence: An All-Inclusive Handbook for Complying with Fair Labour Standards For businesses to guarantee fairness and labour law compliance, time-in-lieu management is essential. Making use of resources like time-in-lieu calculators and Excel templates can expedite the process, from computing accrued hours to putting transparent policies in place. Covering Fair Work standards and useful templates for effective tracking, this guide delves into the fundamentals of time-in-lieu work. Understanding Time-in-Lieu: Regulations and Fair Work Compliance Paid time off, as opposed to monetary compensation, is what is meant by "time in lieu" when it comes to employee overtime. Time-in-lieu policies are governed by Fair Work regulations, which make sure workers are appropriately paid for overtime.
Employing the Time-in-Lieu Calculator to Ensure Precise Monitoring Businesses can effectively track and manage compensatory time off by using a time in lieu calculator. Employees can check their balances and have the ability to calculate accrued hours based on overtime worked with this tool. Employers can guarantee that workers receive the proper amount of time in lieu of overtime by entering pertinent data, such as overtime hours and applicable rates. Applying a Time-in-Lieu Model for Streamlined Procedures An organised framework for handling compensatory time off is offered by a time in lieu template. Fields for tracking usage, computing accrued time in lieu, and documenting overtime hours are usually included in this template. Businesses can preserve uniformity and transparency in their time-in-lieu policies by utilising a standard template.
Making Certain Fair Work Compliance in Lieu of Arrangements when implementing time-in-lieu preparations, compliance with Fair Work rules is crucial. It is mandatory for employers to comply with rules pertaining to the all-out number of hours worked, least rest periods, and the entitlement to salaried time off. Businesses can stay in compliance and prevent violations by keeping up with Time in Lieu Fair Work standards and seeking legal advice when needed.

Attendance Software Demystified: A Comprehensive Guide for Businesses
The foundation of efficient workforce management is attendance tracking, which guarantees accurate timekeeping of employee work hours, streamlines payroll processing, and permits adherence to labour laws. While punch cards and paper-based timesheets have long served this purpose, the advent of technology has ushered in a new era of attendance tracking through software programmes. In this blog, we will delve into the complex world of attendance software, covering its features, advantages, and deployment techniques to help businesses achieve effective workforce management.
Important Features and Functionality
To accommodate the various needs of enterprises, contemporary attendance software comes with a plethora of features and functionality. Let's examine some of the salient points in more detail:
Time tracking and monitoring: Employees can clock in and out electronically with attendance software, doing away with the requirement for paper timesheets. It makes it possible to precisely measure working hours, breaks, and overtime, giving managers instant access to data on worker attendance.
Integration with payroll and HR systems: The smooth integration of attendance software with HRMS and payroll software is one of its biggest benefits. Businesses may ensure proper employee remuneration and streamline payroll calculations by automating the syncing of attendance data with payroll processing software.
Analytics and reporting: Attendance software produces thorough reports and analyses on employee attendance for topics such as overtime hours, late arrivals, and absentee rates. These insights enable managers to see trends in attendance, make data-driven choices, and put plans in place to increase worker productivity.
Mobile Accessibility: Employees can remotely clock in and out using their smartphones or tablets thanks to attendance software, which provides mobile accessibility in today's workforce that is becoming more and more mobile.
Benefits for Businesses
Companies in a variety of sectors can gain a great deal by implementing attendance software. The following are some of the main benefits:
Enhanced accuracy and efficiency: Software solutions that automate attendance monitoring processes eliminate mistakes and inaccuracies that come with manual techniques like punch cards or paper timesheets. This lowers the possibility of payroll errors and increases processing efficiency.
Enhanced compliance: One of the most important aspects of personnel management is adherence to labour laws. By accurately documenting employee work hours, breaks, and overtime, attendance software helps organisations maintain compliance and lowers the chance of fines or legal issues.
Savings: Manual attendance tracking techniques need specialised administrative resources and are labour- and time-intensive. Employee attendance software saves organisations a lot of money by automating these procedures, which lowers labour and administrative expenses.
Enhanced productivity: Managers can spot trends of tardiness or absenteeism and take proactive steps to solve them when they have real-time visibility into staff attendance data. Employee accountability increases, and worker productivity increases as a result.
Adoption and Implementation
Careful planning and execution are necessary for the effective implementation of attendance software. Take into consideration these crucial steps:
Evaluate business needs: Organisations should evaluate their unique demands and goals prior to choosing an attendance software solution. This includes assessing variables like the workforce size, the industry in which it operates, and any particular requirements for attendance tracking.
Choose the appropriate software programme: Businesses need to select an attendance software solution that fits their needs and budget among the many options on the market. Considerations include customer support, customisation choices, scalability, and ease of use.
Training and integration: Businesses should make sure that a software solution integrates seamlessly with current systems, such as payroll and HRMS software, after a solution has been chosen. Employees should also receive thorough training to acquaint them with the capabilities and functionalities of the programme.
Monitoring and optimisation: Companies should closely monitor the use and performance of the attendance software after installation. This involves monitoring important data, including customer satisfaction, system uptime, and employee adoption rates. In order to achieve maximum ROI and optimal performance, it is imperative to swiftly resolve any issues or challenges that may develop.
Conclusion
Attendance software is a game-changing tool for companies looking to improve operational effectiveness and optimise their personnel management procedures. Utilising the sophisticated features and functionalities provided by contemporary attendance software systems, companies may increase efficiency, guarantee compliance, and improve accuracy. Businesses may realise the full benefits of effective workforce management and fully utilise the potential of attendance software with proper planning, execution, and optimisation.

Streamline Your Operations: Mastering Efficient Shift Management for Peak Performance
Tumblr media
The Importance of Efficient Shift Management
In today's fast-paced business environment, shift management plays a critical role in ensuring operational efficiency and employee satisfaction. Efficiently organising employee work schedules not only maximise productivity but also minimises conflicts and reduces labour costs. Let's delve deeper into the significance of effective shift management.
Challenges in Shift Management
Despite its importance, shift management comes with its own set of challenges. From dealing with last-minute changes to accommodating employee preferences and ensuring adequate coverage, there are numerous factors that can complicate the process. Without proper planning and tools in place, businesses risk facing scheduling conflicts, employee burnout, and decreased morale.
Flexibility and Adaptability
One key aspect of effective shift management is flexibility. Employers must be able to adapt to changing business needs and accommodate employee preferences to the extent possible. By offering flexibility in scheduling, such as shift swapping and remote work options, businesses can boost employee satisfaction and retention while maintaining operational continuity.
Utilising Technology Solutions
In the digital age, technology offers a plethora of solutions to streamline shift management processes. Employee scheduling software allows businesses to automate scheduling, track employee availability, and communicate schedule changes in real-time. By leveraging such tools, employers can eliminate manual errors, reduce administrative burden, and ensure efficient allocation of resources.
Communication and Transparency
Clear communication is paramount in effective shift management. Employers should establish transparent communication channels to keep employees informed about schedule changes, upcoming shifts, and organisational expectations. Additionally, soliciting feedback from employees regarding their scheduling preferences fosters a collaborative work environment and promotes employee engagement.
Balancing Workload and Employee Needs
Achieving a balance between business requirements and employee needs is essential for successful shift management. Employers should strive to create equitable schedules that distribute workload fairly among employees while considering factors such as individual preferences, availability, and work-life balance. By prioritising employee well-being, businesses can cultivate a motivated and productive workforce.
Monitoring and Optimization
Continuous monitoring and optimization are key components of effective shift management. Employers should regularly evaluate scheduling practices, analyze performance metrics, and solicit feedback from both employees and customers to identify areas for improvement. By identifying inefficiencies and implementing targeted solutions, businesses can enhance operational efficiency and drive sustainable growth.
Compliance and Legal Considerations
Compliance with labour laws and regulations is non-negotiable in shift management. Employers must ensure that scheduling practices adhere to applicable laws regarding overtime, break periods, and minimum rest requirements. Failure to comply with legal obligations can result in costly fines, legal disputes, and damage to reputation. Therefore, staying informed about relevant labour laws and proactively addressing compliance issues is imperative.
Conclusion
Efficient shift management is essential for optimising workforce productivity, enhancing employee satisfaction, and driving business success. By prioritising flexibility, utilising technology solutions, fostering communication, and maintaining compliance with legal requirements, businesses can overcome challenges associated with scheduling and unlock the full potential of their workforce. With strategic planning and continuous improvement, mastering shift management becomes a catalyst for sustainable growth and competitive advantage in today's dynamic marketplace.
