This sculpture was photographed and labeled "Marquesan Idole" by Jules Agostini (French, 1859-1930) in November 1894, in the Marquesas Islands, in Nuku Hiva (Paris, musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Agostini's photo albums). Sent to work for the French State in Oceania, Agostini stopped in the Marquesas Islands in late November 1894 just before arriving in Tahiti, where he stayed until 1898.

This was quite awkward to figure out because there isn’t one specific way a vector should look. All the official art is very slightly different so I had to figure out the right shapes and proportions for everything so it still looked enough like a vector. It’s not massively symmetrical but the Art of the High Republic book mentions that ship models for Star Wars actually have built in asymmetry to make it look more lifelike, so yeah that’s all definitely intentional I did that on purpose, definitely…

The joints on this could definitely be stronger, it’s literally just held together with glue, but as long as you don’t swoosh it too hard it does hold itself together.

hey!! i so love that you've asked me this because i have headcanons for district 7 (that i've been meaning to share on here for soo long.. ) so here you go!

DISTRICT 7 GENERAL THOUGHTS

i believe that while district 7 is a beautiful district, the upkeep of trees and keeping forests neat (especially after autumn/winter) is extremely taxing and would be a traditional job for everyone in the district to put their hands in during.

many people go into the lumber industry at the earliest age possible, say maybe 14-15. many parents teach their children how to be handy with axes (in the case of being reaped,) and carrying logs and timber is also a common job in most areas.

like most districts, there's a wealthy area and areas of poverty. the sear is an area populated with working class civilians (who often have okay-off living, but the separation helps in such a widely populated district,) while the wealthier side is nicknamed the lacewoods (to attest to the amount of people living there.)

with a good work ethic within the district, this gives most people an inherited determination and independence when it comes to both work (and fighting in the arena.)

victors live in the canopy, a rural area where trees are plentiful and the houses built are secluded from common people (for sense of privacy and respect for their victors.)

7 doesn't exactly hold one religious belief, although some people carried their ideals through from the dark days, and therefore many are spread out and practiced.

jobs are often unisex, but district 7 has a culture of being lenient on women and children amongst dangerous/risky jobs, and will therefore keep their most capable at the helm.

definitely a community through thick and thin — when a hardship is faced, the people go through it together rather than alone.

district 7 has a past victors/fallen tributes burial site named the splinter yard. not accessible to anyone but the familes of the dead/victors themselves.

It’s janky pose to pose animation reminiscent of Lacewood Productions’ work on Season 1 of Ren & Stimpy. This is from the rather bleh season 5 episode, Travelouge.

Moth of the Week

North Island Lichen Moth

Declana atronivea

The North Island lichen moth or North Island zebra moth is in the family Geometridae. It was first described in 1865 by Frances Walker as Detunda atronivea, which was later changed to the Declana genus. It’s species name “atronivea” can be broken into the Latin words atro meaning black and nivea meaning snowy. Predictably, they are found in the North Island of New Zealand. Finally rounding out the name, the common name “zebra” comes from its black and white disruptive coloration and “lichen” comes from how this species camouflages itself by resting on lichen.

Description The forewings, head, and back are marked by a mottled white and black/dark brown pattern. It is very similar to the South Island lichen moth however, the North Island lichen moths’ wings are more mottled and present a rare form patterning in most: asymmetry. On its gray thorax is a black rectangular mark which also makes it differ from its neighbor. It’s hindwings and antennae are also gray with the hindwings having a gradient darkening towards the lower edge and a dark outline. The hindlegs follow the same gradient while the top two legs are black. Males have larger antennae while females have larger bodies.

Wingspan Range: 4 - 4.5 cm (≈1.6 - 1.8 in)

Diet and Habitat This species eats plants in the Araliaceae family, a family of flowering plants. Two examples of this are Five Finger (Neopanax arboreus) and Lacewood (Pseudopanax crassifolius). Adult moths do not feed.

This species is endemic to, or only found on, New Zealand. It is found exclusively in the North Island:

- Rare in Whanganui region (1913)

- Common around Mount Taranaki and Mount Ruapehu (1913)

- Also found in Wellington, Otaki and Napier

Mating Adults emerge from their cocoons in February and March and the eggs are laid singly in late October. Adult moths presumably mate near these timeframes. They begin green, transition to blue with purple spots in a week, and become a light purple before hatching. Hatching takes 11 days.

Predators This species avoids predation by camouflaging itself against lichen. The black and white pattern of its head, back, and forewings (which hide the hindwings while at rest) blend into the mottled surroundings. Additionally, the pattern creates an effect called disruptive colorations which breaks up the animals outline and makes them harder to spot. This works against potential predators such as birds.

Fun Fact Not only does the wing patterning vary on an individual North Island lichen moth’s forewings but even between moths of the same species.

My new gossamer support spindle, made by local Australian artisan The Spindle Shop, along with a reversible support bowl arrived.

This spindle is absolutely lovely. It’s made from banksia, lacewood, and frogwood & weighs 16 grams. The support bowl has a shallow dimple and a deeper dimple & is made from camphor.

This is my first time using a support spindle, so the yarn is a bit lumpy and the included fluff was coarser than I’m used to, but I can see me enjoying spinning supported.

#1873 - Platanus × acerifolia - London Plane

AKA Platanus × hispanica, or hybrid plane. A very common urban tree in many parts of the world, because of its tolerance for air pollution and soil compaction, and resistance to anthracnose cankers. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world hardly anything will eat it, which doesn’t help biological diversity in the aforementioned cities, and the small stiff hairs shed by young leaves and dispersing seeds are an asthma trigger. 

This was one of many growing around the Melbourne CBD, where my asthma was being well and truly triggered.

It’s believed to be an accidental hybrid of Platanus orientalis (oriental plane) and Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore), but it’s possible that it’s a cultivar of P. orientalis. Either way, the seeds are fertile. 

London Plane is a deciduous tree up to 40 m (131 ft) tall, with a trunk that can be up to 3 m (10 ft) or more in circumference. The bark is usually pale grey-green, smooth and exfoliating, or buff-brown and not exfoliating. The palmate, lobed leaves are thick and stiff-textured, and up to 25cm broad. Unsurprisingly, the leaves can also be a problem once they pile up on roads and sidewalks. 

Some urban birds will pick the seeds out of the seed balls, and the timber is a quite attractive form called ‘lacewood’ but in many parts of the world the trees are being removed and replaced with more ecologically sound choices.
