Opinion on the hc that the (2012) turtles are bilingual (with there first language being Japanese) ?
(Kansjevdjdhud, I love that hc smm<3)
ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE HEADCANON EVER
i love multilingual turtles!!!
i do think 2012 it's the one iteration that seems to be more in touch with yoshi's culture the most.
this might be for the fact that yoshi didn't have absolutely anyone at all when he arrived to new york, a complete unknown different place to him.
it's not literally specificed but one can deduce yoshi got the four turtles in the first place as an attempt to not feel as lonely after losing his family, his clan and being exiled.
so after the mutation i feel like yoshi would have taught the boys how to speak and read in japanese first instead of english since he would have been trying to find a level of normalcy and comfort in all he was going trough.
Another fact is that the brothers are used to splinter telling them stories as a way to pass the time when they were growing up. I like to think he tells them stories about different things like legends and just silly random stories from his past, all in yoshi's og language.
The show also shows it a lot! the brothers speak and understand japanese words pretty randomly! So i do think they mostly speak it while they are by themselves exclusively and at home instead of english (probably not much when april or casey are around as to not make them feel left out of the conversation tho)
Tumblr media
also another fun silly headcanon i like is that mikey somehow speaks and understands spanish because of how he says random words of the language in the show too lol. as to how he learnt it himself idk tho. he probably found some telenovelas in vhs or smt lmao

peri?? did they change his name because it was a slur or am i just misremembering the name
No, you remember just fine. Originally he was named 'Poof' but they changed it in the newer show to 'Peri' for that reason (at least that's what I think, not 100% sure take it with a grain of salt).

I thought sea monsters didn't exist until I saw one. I was diving in the cold waters with a friend of mine and we both halted at the sight of a large figure swimming around us. We thought it was a shark, but it was far worse. It was fast, it was getting closer. Soon we could see a huge bipedal being, but it wasn't a human: it was too tall, scales covered its whole body, tendrils hair moved around it like seaweed. My diving partner had a harpoon, he was terrified and shot at it. That...thing attacked him, fiercely, blood flowed all around. Then a souless, cold mask emerged from the red, murky water and watched me. I couldn't see the eyes, just two black pits, but I felt them piercing right into my soul. I couldn't move. Yet that creature didn't find me worthy of wasting its time. It swam away with the body of my friend and I never went into those waters again.

Above is my attempt at transcribing the first three lines of TH 496, that haunting fragment of Kuchean poetry. AIUI, in Tocharian B, the transcription convention uses ä for /ɨ/, ṣ for /ʃ/, ś for /ɕ/, c for /tɕ/, and ñ for /ɲ/. The ṃ is just a variant for /n/. So I think these lines would be pronounced something like:
jaltse pikala watɨn le -ɲo tɕi ɲe -- -- -- -- -- -nts po askaskau ma ɲi sa noʃ ɕomo ɲem wnolme la:re ta:ka ma: ra postan cisa la:re mɨsketɨrɲ ciʃʃe laraumɲe ciʃʃe a:rtaɲje pelke kaltta- rrɨ ɕolɨmpa ʃʃe ma: te sta:lle ɕol wɨrɲai taijsu pɨlskanojm sanai ʃarjo
Some fun cognates: śomo is cognate to Latin homo, OE guma (modern "groom," with an intrusive r due to the compound "bridegroom"); ñem is cognate to English "name;" and wnolme is cognate to Latin animus.
At least some of the consonant clusters in Tocharian B were eventually simplified in pronunciation--apparently later in the same manuscript someone has written lykautkañ for klyautkañ, "make, turn into;" the initial cluster was probably pronounced /l/, which makes this an error roughly on par with writing "nkow" instead of "know," because you know there's a k in there somewhere but it's not pronounced.
The Tocharian script is essentially a local form of the Brahmic script, and operates on the same principle: in theory, it is an abugida where each sign is a consonant with an inherent /a/ or /ə/ vowel, and diacritics mark the other vowels (as well as standalone vowels), while a virama marks final consonants with no vowel. In practice, Brahmic scripts (especially older ones) seem to be a a lot more complicated, because consonant sequences are represented by stacking signs on top of one another, and this can produce a dizzying array of fearsome ligatures. The annoying thing about Tocharian is that I actually can't find any good resources online about the writing system as it's actually used--mostly a list of the basic signs (which, as you might expect, are not in fact the majority of signs used in a text like this!), without any indication of what common variants or simplifications look like.
It helps, of course, that cheat sheets exist for this sort of thing, so you can check your work as you go. But I would definitely classify this text--or at least the hand responsible for the first two and a half lines--as "not especially clear examples of the script." I think it would also be kind of annoying to learn in that the division into signs doesn't really match up with natural syllabification at all--there's this kind of fucked up maximal onset principle thing going on where instead of writing <war nai> or <kalt tar rä> you have to write <wa rnai> and <ka ltta rra>, which seems like it would have been very annoying. Seems like it would be very easy to transition an abugida into an alphabet, too--you already have standalone signs for all the vowels!
But there's no denying that like a lot of scripts in the family, it looks great. Just A+ aesthetic, up there with Syriac and katakana.

i'll be so real and vulnerable I did NOT get Who Nona Was for the entirety of nona the ninth. had to read a reddit post to understand what the fuck was up. REDDIT! I thought that she was a soul melange of gideon and harrow. but like she got 75% of Soul and Kiriona got 25% and thats why Kiriona was kind of fucked up, like Supernatural logic where someone without a soul is just kind of psychopathic. i thought nona was like griddlehark lovechild but in harrow's body

Khaji’s panic flooded the scarab. There was no escape from Reach here. So the SC4R48 flared with power from the star heart that Reach had stolen and placed inside Khaji-da -efek-ney-del-tey*. me writing and tossing in a few words of irish: absolutely fine, not a bother, i'm so good at this omg, i really do have it down to an art--
me, currently trying to write a drabble where aisling and edgar are arguing in the cellar and edgar uses a few spanish terms of endearment, having the same level of stress as when i tried to write a letter for my final french exam. nobody asked me to write it but it's still demanding me to search a dozen different websites to see if it makes sense:

I am building so many hcs for Moon in my mind I love her so much enough so to think abt ancient politics girlie better consider herself lucky (I say, as if fictional politics becoming to long dead societies isn't my favorite shit to explore)
#rat rambles#rain posting#anyways I like the idea that moon was first built during a time when the original nation that lived in the area had been split into two#she was built near one of the borders in a location that many of the organizations that had been carrying out iterator constructions at the#time had been eyeing for a while but avoiding because of the high tensions between the two nations and how itd be hard to not use resources#from across the border from either side to keep her operational#eventually though one of them was given the thumbs up and started construction leading to a lot of conflict#for a long time it was mostly just diplomatic arguments through messages and meetings but eventually as moon neared completion the topic#of which nation she should be considered to belong to became a major point of contension and there was a minor war over it#eventually the nation that had initially backed her construction gave up due to some natural distaters#so by the time moon was activated she was considered an iterator of the other nation and as such she had quite a bit of adapting to do as#while she had both of the primary languages of the nations in her database pretty much all of her database and internal functions were#written by and with the laguage of the initial nation that backed her construction#eventually this stopped mattering as the two nations ended up merging and the newly founded government remerged the two languages#I say remerged as they were initially different branches of the primary laguage of the initial nation that had falled apart#although moon found it nice to be able to use many of the words she wasnt allowed to use before it was annoying to have to once again#adjust to speaking a different language primarily#although she definitely did find it funny watching the others struggle to use the new language organically as she had a head start in#understanding how a lot of the 'new' stuff was actually used in practical conversation as opposed to straight translation#many iterators that were around during the two nation era will still usually exclusively think in their local language and occasionally#speak in it fully in more casual settings if they get that luxury#now ofc language evolves over time so all iterators have had to adjust how they speak but generally speaking they still are most#comfortable with their original language as its what they were built to speak
