it's so disconcerting when someone who you didn't think was a profound-name-giver turns out to be one. like you hear about some run-of-the-mill cousin having a child and they name it Job or smth. where did that come from

I will forever be proud of Slovenia for almost always sending a song in Slovenian to Eurovision, regardless of the results it gets them

In Slovene language (as in several other Slavic languages) there a three grammatical genders; feminine, masculine and a third gender that is called "middle" gender (corresponds to neuter in German). All nouns, including objects, have one of the three genders, but the middle gender is also used for nouns related to humans and animals, examples are "dete" (baby), dekle (a young girl), "tele" (a young cow) etc. As adjectives and verbs also inflect according to gender, Slovene already has a structural solution for non-binary language, even though it is a strongly gendered language.
Even better is Finnish, that has gender-neutral pronouns and language structure!

Baltic and Slavic languages!
This is one of my favourite families, because they have such an interesting dynamic as characters. Their personalities crash a lot between them, but they have strong historical and cultural bonds. And, just like any family, they have the kinda crazy aunt who has tried to murder most of them at some point. Take your guess! Xd

I got rid of any signs of Russian accent in my English back in high school and aqired american-ish one along the way.
My Czech teacher sometimes praises me for my pronunciation, so naturally I thought that it comes easy for me.
Then there's Slovene.
And the thing is, at the first glance (and a second, and a third) there's little to no difference between pronunciation in Slovene and Russian, my native language. So I thought that at least here it'll be easy.
Until I started working at the restaurant, that is.
Because apparently there ARE differences that I don't notice and thus cannot imitate. And that's why I give myself away every time I start speaking.
I mean, of course everyone can hear that I'm not Slovene, since I'm not yet confident in my skills and sometimes my phrasing is a bit awkward.
But I can't count number of times people asked me (instead of "where are you from"), whether I'm from Russia or Ukraine.
So I asked my colleagues. They said yes, I have very distinctive Russian accent.
Now I've already heard how other Russian native speakers use Slovene and I can HEAR the difference.
But I still didn't quite figure out WHAT makes the pronunciation different.
My investigation continues.

I am furious that humans invented language and then made it hard to learn. Like what's the point in that!!

I’M SO SORRY I CONFUSED THE TWO wasn’t intentional I swear, there’s just some air in my head I don’t consider them the same because they aren’t. My native language is Slovene, some people around me were saying that they don’t think it should fall under slavic languages which confused me a lot. Once again I’m sorry for the incorrect assumption wgjfgd
oh nonono dw dw i didn't assume it was on purpose, it happens! i just always give a warning bc you never know how someone else would react to that, and it'd be a stupid misunderstanding to have! dw <3
but also!! those people are weird, how is Slovene not Slavic? I can see someone saying "you're more west than south Slavic", but not Slavic at all is. a silly thing to say ab SLOVene😭😭

By relevant I mean that it's widely spoken in my country and worldwide :) I think all these languages are beautiful and interesting which is why I made this poll. My sister speaks basically fluent Arabic and my dad is learning too so that's another plus for Arabic aside from the fact I live in Israel lol. Idk if I wanna learn a language for fun or for practicability and how much I effort I wanna put in

Pozdravljeni!
I'm here to help everyone learn the Slovenian language after I saw people confused by its intricacies. I'm striving to uphold Slovenian culture as well as teaching it to others as an amateur by sharing material such as word lists, grammar explanations, pronounciation guides, videos + grammar, scans of books in Slovene... The focus of this blog will be formal language with added colloquial form of it here and there. Asks are, of course, always opened!
