In honor of National Rice Month, here is a series of hand-colored lantern slides of the rice farming process in Japan, from stirring the rice paddy field to get the field ready and hand planting the rice sprouts. Stay tuned for the next post on harvesting and polishing rice. These lantern slides are a part of Etz-Trudell collection of hand-colored lantern slides of Japan, Korea, and India.

Marriott C. Morris avidly documented his family throughout his lifetime and often captured scenes from the turn of the 20th century that we can relate to today. A beautiful day by the sea picking wildflowers is no exception, and with Spring around the corner we are impatient to be right there with them.

These wonderful images come from a collection of lantern slides dating to circa 1900, showing scenes of Japan. The slides were collected by Charles Cheers Wakefield, 1st (and last) Viscount Wakefield of Hythe in the County of Kent.
Top: Women collecting shellfish.
Bottom left: Dotonburi Lane, Osaka. The building at the back of frame with the flags is a theatre.
Bottom right: Northern view of Mt. Fuji from Ukishimanuma (Floating Island Bog) near Kashiwabara-Shinden in Fuji City.

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK IN THE CONSERVATION LAB AT ARCHIVES II
The Conservation Lab at Archives II recently hosted two Alternative Spring Break interns. The interns worked on a rehousing project for lantern slides. Guided by our photo conservators, they helped to treat, sleeve, and box lantern slides from the Army Air Force. And as an added bonus they found some interesting images!

3 and 7 for the HDM asks!
3. favorite quote
“Hm.” — Marisa Coulter.
A few!! The “take this universe apart” is so sexy, like...I know you are all like “SHUT UP ABOUT MASRIEL!!!”, but there’s something so erotic powerful about Asriel saying it... Look away.
“If you are not in people’s lives, they can forget you quite quickly.” - Marisa C. It’s more the way she said it I think, it had a lot of impact on me.
“It's not enough though is it? Love... doesn't mean you won't hurt her, doesn't mean she's safe with you, it doesn't work that way.” - Lee Scoresby. HE NEVER ONCE MISSED!
I think there are more but I can’t write them all down.
7. favorite set/location
Asriel’s lab!!!!! The lighting in it is so pretty I feel like I could sit in there and watch aurora for hours.

Peeling Bark for Making Bark Cloth, Uganda, Africa
Barkcloth-making is an ancient craft of the Baganda people who live in the Buganda kingdom in southern Uganda. Its preparation involves one of humankind’s oldest savoir-faire, a prehistoric technique that predates the invention of weaving. The inner bark of the Mutuba tree (Ficus natalensis) is harvested during the wet season and then, in a long and strenuous process, beaten with different types of wooden mallets to give it a soft and fine texture and an even terracotta color. With the introduction of cotton cloth by Arab caravan traders in the nineteenth century, production of bark cloth slowed and eventually faded out, limiting the use of barkcloth to cultural and spiritual functions. (Information found through UNESCO, Intangible Cultural Heritage.)

I looked into 3 cinematic devices to find a method of documenting the site (Fort Lane).
Top - Tunnel Book: Invented in the mid 18th century, they were inspired by theatre stage sets. These books give an illusion of depth and perspective through its layers of cut panels.
Bottom - Lantern Slides (Magic Lantern): Invented in the mid 19th century, they were an important step in the creation of cinema as it is today. In its basic form, the slides are images printed onto glass plates (originally hand painted) and through a light source, these images are projected.
Recordings: Sound is a powerful tool for storytelling and giving a scene impact. It can make people feel immersed in a space they've never been in and a collection of sounds can be specific to a site.

I was tagged fuckin’ ages ago by the lovely @lanternslides to talk about this gaming soundtrack edit!
Concept: This was the most time-consuming part for me because I felt the urge to literally dig through my entire gaming library and see which soundtracks spoke to me the most -- then, after all that, I had to go and pick my favorite track from each OST, ensuring it was a representative of my tastes. I could’ve gone with 10 OSTs but I thought the gifset might end up looking a bit long, so these 8 were the ones that made the cut.
Resources: I’d always wanted to make one of those super pretty Spotify edits, so I used this PSD!
Editing process: I used clips from various scenery videos that I had stored on my laptop as well as certain videos from YouTube, if I didn’t have what I needed. These clips all corresponded to the scenes in which the particular track played, and I made simple square gifs of each scene, then stuck them in the PSD in the album art space. I changed the gradient highlight to whatever accent color I really liked from the scene, the one that I thought “popped out” the most but wouldn’t be too saturating to look at. After editing the text to display the track title, composer, and game, I also went to the lengths to include the track length and the approximate current time in the song that the indicator was at.
Posting: I usually rearrange my unordered gifs in these sets once I see them in the full post, and try to make sure that the colors don’t conflict with each other too much. Then I added the caption, ensuring it fit the text style that I used for this entire giffing challenge, tagged it with the appropriate tags, committed a blood sacrifice that it might show up in the tags, and hit post.
No pressure at all to do this -- but I tag: - @rhysfiona for this beautiful beautiful art because I love you and also you’re incredibly talented - @rafeadlr for this lovely Mirror’s Edge Catalyst graphic that consumes my consciousness with its beauty (as I’m sure you’ve noticed ^^)
