one of the music boxes i inventoried today was missing its spring, its winding lever, and all its controls. it wasn't even screwed into its case. all that was left was the comb and cylinder and governor rattling about loose inside this thing. but it was stuck in the middle of a tune, so we pushed the cylinder forward to the end by hand. something so poetic about hearing this music box play again (likely after decades, judging by the disrepair), even though it was missing most of its parts and would not be able to play on its own
