one of the music boxes i inventoried today was missing its spring, its winding lever, and all its controls. it wasn't even screwed into its case. all that was left was the comb and cylinder and governor rattling about loose inside this thing. but it was stuck in the middle of a tune, so we pushed the cylinder forward to the end by hand. something so poetic about hearing this music box play again (likely after decades, judging by the disrepair), even though it was missing most of its parts and would not be able to play on its own

#🫀#not going anywhere with this its just sticking in my head...#the tune still played beautifully despite the condition the rest of the box was in #also it being stuck in the middle of a tune for a long time can damage the box which is why we had to reset it #i luv inventorying music boxes its my favorite part of this internship. im gonna miss it #i dont remember the exact date on this one but most of them are late 1800s... its so special to hear them play #the earliest one i handled today was 1860s
