Explosion in Central Paris Injures Dozens and Damages Buildings
Tumblr media
A powerful explosion shook the bustling Latin Quarter in central Paris, causing injuries to approximately 30 people, igniting fires, and causing a building facade to collapse. The incident occurred on Rue Saint-Jacques, near popular landmarks such as Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and Luxembourg Gardens. Rescue teams are searching for two individuals who may be trapped under the debris. Witnesses described a massive explosion and a towering fireball that engulfed several floors of a building housing the Paris American Academy. Rubble from the damaged structure was scattered across the street. According to the authorities, at least 29 people were injured, with four in critical condition. Soldiers were deployed to establish a safety perimeter around the area.

While it is too early to determine the exact cause of the blast, local deputy mayor Edouard Civel mentioned a potential gas explosion on Twitter. Witnesses reported a strong smell of gas moments before the incident. Shop manager Rahman Oliur, located nearby, described the violent shaking of the shop, resembling a bomb blast. Bar worker Khal Ilsey heard a massive explosion and witnessed a fierce blaze at the end of the street. The explosion took place around 4:55 pm, as people were leaving work. Although the Latin Quarter attracts tourists and foreign students during the early summer, it is not immediately clear if any foreigners were among the injured or missing individuals. As a precaution, several adjacent buildings were evacuated. Even after two hours, first aiders were attending to residents suffering from shock. Television footage showed firefighters battling the blaze with water hoses as thick black smoke rose into the sky. Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau mentioned that initial findings suggested the blast originated within the affected building. Investigators will examine whether there were any building regulation violations or negligent actions by individuals.

Over 200 firefighters responded to the emergency. Paris police chief Laurent Nunez later confirmed that the fire had been brought under control. Rue Saint-Jacques, located in the 5th arrondissement, connects Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral with Sorbonne University and the Val de Grace military hospital. It is also close to the popular Jardin du Luxembourg. The Latin Quarter has long been a hub for expatriate and French writers, musicians, and artists. Residents were startled by the blast's shockwave, with art historian Monique Mosser recalling that she thought it was a bomb. Many windows in her building were shattered. Upon receiving evacuation orders, she quickly gathered her belongings, including her laptop and phone, neglecting to take her medication. This incident follows previous incidents in Paris, such as a gas leak explosion in the 9th arrondissement in 2019 that claimed four lives and injured 66 people. Additionally, a fire broke out in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019, causing significant damage to the roof before being extinguished. Read the full article

On the other side of the street from the Sorbonne university is the statue of Montagne, the inventor of essay as a literary form. In French essayer means to try, and so an essay is not a work of fiction, nor it is an account of proven facts - it is an attempt of the author to think out a certain topic and to formulate and present a solid, yet always subjective attitude. An important yet often overlooked milestone in the development of the western culture of individuality, the notion of the self and of the subjective, essay as a literary form is always personal, a view into the individual, unique being of the author, but must also be well substantiated and communicable. As they are building and substantiating a point of view, or an argument, authors are building themselves, their opinions and perspectives. This is an ongoing process, one of permanent fluidity - we change every day, every second - and even the most perfect of essays always remains just that - an essay, an attempt. God(s) can make(s) definitive, final actions, whereas humans struggle and attempt, but, it doesn't have to mean that an attempt is any less successful or even awe inspiring. Montagne's work reminds us that to live and to create is to constantly try (and fail), to constantly pursue perfection all the while knowing that we won't achieve it. It is therefore fitting that his statue is in front of the notoriously strict university such as Sorbonne, known for its academic rigor and unforgiving professors. They are always there to remind their students that they can try all they might, but they will always have to struggle and try even harder. To us from Paris in person who are mostly all Sorbonne alumni, this statue has a special place in our heart. Some of us are also excellent essayists :), which is another reason to relate. #sorbonne #montagne #quartierlatin #latinquarter #essay #essaie #essayer #essays #goldenshoe #goldshoe #studentlife (presso Sorbonne) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGHWmGipB1j/?igshid=cn6a37vxvjm0

Chocolat Chaud (hot chocolate) at Pâtisserie Viennoise near the Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter of Paris. This tiny, but charming, place should be on your list for a hot chocolate that is deep, dark, and not too sweet, served with a pillow of whipped cream (oh, the taste of that French cream!) #patisserieviennoise #chocolatchaud #hotchocolate #paris #parís #latinquarter #sorbonne (at Quartier latin) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcdY2p4OzCC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
