 New Year Gift Ideas
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch Whisky
Johnnie Walker Blue Label is one of the rarest blended whiskies available in the world. A honey-colored whisky with a spicy, smoky fragrance.
The first sip is surprisingly sweet and honeyed, then the smoke gently creeps in like fog at dawn, softly surrounding the edges of the tongue giving way to a luxuriously long, warming, smoky finish. Best served neat, along with an ice-cold water to enhance its powerful character.
 Jameson 18 Year Irish Whiskey
Jameson 18 Years was made to make any occasion memorable. This is an 18-year-old whiskey, the kind of thing you only pull out for best mates. And if you want to impress them just throw this line into conversation: “It’s a unique blend of three signature distillates matured in the finest oak for almost two decades and is given a final marrying period of at least 6 months in a fresh American oak barrel, adding a unique complexity and elegance’. Ok, that is a mouthful. Just let the bottle do the talking.
Its long lingering finish carries the theme of the wood, spice and toffee right through to the end.
 Macallan 12 Year Scotch Whisky
Macallan 12 Year is a classic sherry-cask-matured Speyside that makes a very good gateway into the single malt category. Flavors of fruitcake, warmed bread, soaked raisins, and clove lead to a warm, medium to long finish noted with pear, cigar and peppery clove notes.
Deliciously smooth, with rich dried fruits and sherry, balanced with woodsmoke and spice. Described by F Paul Pacult, the renowned international whisky writer, in his book Kindred Spirits as 'simply the best 12-Year-Old single malt around'.
 Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon
Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon, the world’s first single barrel bourbon whiskey produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery at Frankfort, Kentucky, and launched in 1984 by master distiller Elmer T. Lee. The presentation, taste and finish are all excellent. A staple bourbon for any collector or home bar enjoyer.
A deep, satisfying nose of nutmeg and spices. Powerful dry vanilla notes in harmony with hints of honey amid strong caramel and corn. A medium finish composed of returning corn and nutmeg flavors. Best served neat or on the rocks. Bottled at 46.5% ABV/VOL (90 Proof).
 Sheridan's Coffee Layered Liqueur
Sheridan's Coffee Layered Liqueur is consisting of two bottles that resemble a terrific Irish coffee when layered in the correct proportions. One section is filled with a black liqueur, consisting of coffee and whiskey flavors, while the other is filled with a white liqueur of milk white chocolate. The ausschank blend in these ingredients with one unique pouring spout in the bag.
A beautiful blend of dark coffee chocolate liqueur with a silky-smooth vanilla cream liquor. Tilt the glass to allow the dark chocolate liquor to layer below the cream and it will resemble the best Irish coffee you’ve ever had. It contains 15.5 per cent alcohol by volume. A must try!
 Patron Xo Cafe
Patron XO Cafe is a dry and low-proof coffee liqueur. It’s a combination of Patron silver and the essence fine coffee. This liqueur is a blend of vanilla, chocolate, and coffee aromas. It also has a light tequila taste and chocolate notes. It is recommended to Store it in the freezer. Avoid repeated re-freezing
It is excellent for sipping after dinner, as a premium cocktail ingredient, or as a unique and delicious dessert topping. It is delightful in Martinis or on vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
Johnnie Walker Red Label Blended Scotch Whisky
Johnnie Walker Red Label is crackling with spice and bursting with vibrant, smoky flavors. It’s a blend that combines light whiskies from Scotland’s East Coast and more peaty whiskies from the West, creating an extraordinary depth of flavor. Johnnie Walker Red Label tumbles onto your palate with the freshness of spray from a breaking wave, bringing the unmistakable zing of aromatic spices - cinnamon and pepper - fizzing over the center of your tongue. There’s a suggestion of fruity sweetness, like fresh apple or pear and a mellow bed of vanilla, before the Johnnie Walker signature of a long, lingering, smoky finish.
Enjoy Johnnie Walker Red Label in any way you like - on its own, over ice, or long with your favorite mixer. We recommend Johnnie Ginger.
 Hendrick’s Gin
Hendrick’s Gin is created via an absurdly inefficient, yet quite glorious process. In essence, to make one gin, we first create two. One on an old-fashioned pot still, yielding a rich and intricate spirit. The other on a long-necked Carter Head, producing a delicate, more refined spirit. Each still is infused with an unusual symphony of 11 botanicals. The gins from the two stills are then married together and graced with refreshing infusions of Rose and Cucumber.
This odd method of making gin enables Hendrick’s to taste light, yet intriguingly complex. The result is a wondrously refreshing gin with a delightfully floral aroma, elevating any cocktail and all occasions.
Escape the conventional, and embrace the delectable. Please enjoy the unusual responsibly.

Headcanons on how Muzan and Kokushibo (separately) would celebrate Christmas with their human soulmate? ;) 🎄
Christmas🎄 with Kokushibou and Muzan (Headcanons)
In these headcanons, reader is in a relationship with their preferred demon😁
Kokushibou + First things first, he would cook a lot + He loves to cook and you'll have so much food that you don't know what to do with it + He's taken the time to know what you like so everything will be a mixture of your favourite foods and his + He'll make dishes that are customary for your culture and country, especially sweets + Considering the time period and culture he's from, he'll follow your lead most of the time + He figures that it's more your holiday than his, so he wants to respect the way you do things and make it enjoyable/special for you + He'd wear a santa hat and look adorably goofy in it + When it comes to a Christmas tree, he's kind of a perfectionist. The two of you decorated it together but he's always changing his mind on where he wants things or what ornaments he wants to be more visible + He may accidentally knock down the tree while adjusting something😅 and he'd get really embarrassed + If you have chocolate candies on the tree (in Hungary we have these wrapped up chocolates called szaloncukor that you can hang on the tree) he would eat them when passing by. He thinks he's sneaky but he really is very obvious about it + He would want to surprise you with something he knew that you were looking at during the year. But, it wasn't much of a surprise because in recent months when he saw you looking at something at a store, he'd ask you "Hmm ... so, do you like that?" + It became pretty clear of what he might get for you, but you know that he was trying to surprise you, so you act surprised and it makes him smile and blush + At the end of the night, you end up cuddling together and falling asleep on the couch with the Christmas lights on
Muzan + Can you say "imports"? + He buys all this stuff from all over the world to have around -- decorations, foods, liquors + He's obsessed with panettone and gets some really expensive kind that he orders online + He wants to have a fancy party type of event, but with just the two of you + You both dress up really nice and elegantly, and Muzan sets up the house in candlelight so that it's extra intimate and romantic + He doesn't cook, but he orders various deliveries from different fine restaurants in the area + You end up getting a lot of designer items from him, however a good portion of them are more along the lines of "what he thinks you should like" rather than what you would have chosen for yourself + His taste isn't bad, though, so you're pretty satisfied + He would take a lot of pictures and videos of the two of you that he'd keep private for himself + He really enjoys having a little party because he didn't get to do that kind of stuff when he was human + He laughs and smiles a lot + There's always music playing in the background -- not necessarily Christmas music but classical music or jazz that adds to the atmosphere + He gets more touchy and affectionate as the night goes on + It definitely ends in some good sex

@mstacobelle tagged me for the five things that make me happy list.
Admiring my lawn after I mow it on a nice summer day. Though I may be dirty and tired, the silence and feeling of accomplishment that follows pleases me. Bonus points for seeing Ella's normally white feet turned green from running through grass clippings. It's cute. Sometimes she leads me around the back yard as I push the Toro, dropping a tennis ball in front of it, forcing me to stop and throw the ball for her.
Labels facing forward inside the refrigerator, kitchen cabinets, and hall closet. When I see labels aligned properly, a calm joyfulness sweeps over me. It may stem from working at grocery stores during high school and college. Sometimes after my wife cooks or bakes I quietly check the cabinets and fridge, turning labels of things she used back to the way I like. I also have to move things back to where they belong. (Honey, condiments always go on the shelves of the left-side refrigerator door. That was clearly stated in our wedding vows.)
Listening to the Blues Brothers version of Soul Man while I'm driving.
(Longtime readers will be sick of this one) Finding pizza flavored Pepperidge Farms Goldfish Crackers at a grocery store. Oddly, the best flavor of Goldfish is poorly stocked at stores I frequent. If the pizza flavored crackers are even there, they're disrespectfully located on the bottom shelf, like cheap liquor. I know I could order them online, but I prefer grocery shopping in a store, even if my (Gold)fishing net is empty. Bonus points if the Goldfish crackers are on sale.
Getting rid of coins I find in this house and our cars. Before I go to the grocery store I gather all the loose change I can find. At the self-checkout I feed those coins in like I'm a chain-smoking retiree in front of a one armed bandit. When the coins are gone I pay the balance with plastic. Dumping in $2.87 of loose change makes me feel like I used a $2.87 coupon. It's my money, but I still feel like I got a discount.
Hearing Walker Hayes singing Fancy Like while I'm driving.
Driving my wife's car and not having to first make a beeline to the nearest gas station. That's both happiness and relief.
Hanging out at the brewery with our friends and/or dogs. Since the place first opened Sheila and I have gotten to know most of the employees and a lot of the regular customers. I can go by myself and still end up sharing a table.
Being at the airport dog park when a Boeing 777 or Airbus A330-900 approaches overhead. My dogs don't care, but I think it's cool seeing the larger airliners.
Getting our travel trailer backed in perfectly at a cool campsite, getting it leveled, then walking around with a beer, checking out other trailers and RVs, and meeting new people and dogs.
I listed more than five because I'm pretty happy in general. Also Kim, I like to under promise and over deliver!

Round 1 poll 24: Casey Murphey from the 2019-2020 Florida Mock Trial case: “State of Florida v. Casey Murphy” vs Gladys Ormphby from Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Casey Murphey
I have a lot of obscure mock trial blorbos but I’m going to start with Casey Murphy because I think they best encapsulate the depths of weirdness some of my blorbo relationships with these characters can get to. So to start, I have never been enrolled in a school in Florida. Or even anywhere near there. I visited a few times as a very little kid, but my schooling has been in the Midwest and the Northeast. I also was not remotely involved in high school mock trial in the 2019-2020 school year. I only know Casey Murphy because I used to be part of an online mock trial group that picked up the case a few years later. In fact, I took Casey as a witness as a joke because I had also been a defendant named Casey in the case we did before State v. Murphy. But Casey is my tragic scrungly. The autism took hold on them. BASICALLY they were a slightly “below average” kid grappling with the huge academic expectations their family had. Specifically, there was a college (Southern Coastal University) that their family had been going to for generations. But when Casey applied, they got waitlisted. They managed to make it in right before the school year started, but they were put on probation because of the short notice. A few weeks into the year, though, Casey was talking to their older brother Patrick (basically their closest friend) and they find out about a secret society called SCU Underground that their family has been in since it was founded. Originally called SCU for Change, it was a student activist group. They learn about some shady things happening at the school and how SCUU planned to combat it by holding a protest bonfire. Patrick invited Casey to the next meeting, and Casey was very excited to prove themself. Later psychological testing showed that Casey was among the most easily suggestible in society, so it’s clear that this was important to them. Here’s where things get unclear. All we know for certain is that Casey bought lighter fluid and vodka (likely using a fake ID considering they were only 18) from a liquor store. They brought those things, along with their laptop, in their backpack to the meeting. There was an argument which ended in someone named Cal Robbins storming out of the old student union building which the meeting was being held in. Then, the building burned down, and Casey came out later than everyone else before being arrested and confessing to burning down the building. The prosecution’s claim is that Casey brought the materials to burn down the building to prove their loyalty to the cause. They might have been influenced by Patrick to do it, but either way they actually committed the act. The defense’s claim, which I find more compelling as a story, is that the lighter fluid was to show that they were prepared for the bonfire, the vodka was as a peace offering considering that they were a new member, and the fire was caused by a projector overloading the old building’s power. Casey ran back in to get their laptop so they could continue their school work, and also didn’t know the layout as well as the returning members, so they came back out later than everyone else. Then they were arrested, treated poorly, and were coerced into a false confession because they were lead to believe Patrick would be found guilty if they didn’t. It’s all just so sad and angsty to me, especially seeing as they were found guilty at the trial I did so I always mentally fill in them being falsely imprisoned at the end. They just wanted to prove themself to their family, to step out of their brother’s shadow, and this is where it lead them. Also here’s my playlist lol https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ccMwC9xV83ddZoANpejE1?si=nGtWp7MvS7WXJEWLMrBNVw Also also, like most mt witnesses, no canon gender or pronouns which is very cool of them
Gladys Ormphby
From a show that’s over 50 years old. Extremely powerful as she beats guys with her purse when they offend her, yet has a perpetually gloomy demeanor. In most circumstances she’s the personification of “I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!” Sometimes she is allowed a little scrap of dignity as a treat and it’s so much fun to watch. Gladys is quite flirtatious, has a quirky sense of style (some would say, lack thereof), has no sense of personal space, and really really loves chocolate. Despite her seemingly being so bland, every one of her appearances in her source material somehow has a silly surprise to offer. She was also featured in a very short lived cartoon series, Baggy Pants and the Nitwits. In conclusion, “though she be but little, she is fierce” - vote for gaslight gatekeep girlboss Gladys!!!

Debaser by D.S. & Durga: Midgar shuffle
…don’t know about you, but I am un CHIEN! Andalusien! --Black Francis
I picked up a number of samples by the indie perfumer D.S. & Durga, including “Steamed Rainbow,” “Deep Dark Vanilla,” “Pistachio,” and this one. Debaser is my favorite so far.
Online reviews are mixed. The famous and eloquent Kafkaesque likes this, but argues an incongruity in its name; while Debaser cites the 1989 Pixies tune, the Black Francis screech is nowhere to be found in this pleasant, fig-based fragrance, powdered with a little iris, warmed up with tonka and coconut, sweetened with pear, and something slightly spicy and woody underneath. Other reviewers have taken up this theme, confused by the edgy name, complaining, even, about false advertising. Many allusions to green accords, garden wanders, fresh meadows, and so forth; all the traditional imagery of the mainstream mind as it seeks an exit from the ordinary.
I smell these described notes, certainly—the milky fig, the coconut, not too sweet but very present; the bassy tonka, the blonde wood, the iris and the moss all cutting through the lactones and preventing them from getting insipid.
But I am not transported to a bosky grove or dew-laden meadow: this fragrance is no portal to Narnia.
It's a little like one of those reversible pictures--a goose one way, an old lady another; if you focus too much on the fig and all its lacy green assumptions, you miss the city.
Because the thing is I get a very specific hit of leather jacket—no, vinyl… no, leather after all, a biker jacket, nice and bulky, the kind you wear as armor for the subway. The jacket you wear as you stand in the corner of the mechanics’ garage when your moto goes tits-up. The one you have on as you chew on a pear-flavored hard candy, lounging, inconspicuous, waiting for that guy on your docket--the dumb one, the weak link--to come out of the liquor store and lead you to your real quarry.
The one you wear when even the rain feels dirty.
The longer I had Debaser on, the more the affect crystallized: it’s Midgar, buddy. If this name means nothing to you, don’t worry. Just drop in the degraded urban environment of your choice, but fill it with the joy and optimism peculiar to that space, the joy of catching the last train, the joy of spicy red oil noodles, the joy of sarcastic jokes with your partner in crime.
For friends of mine who know where Midgar is—thus what I mean by citing it—I should warn you that depending on your skin chemistry, you may have to traverse an astonishing amount of coconut before the leather jacket, the train, the slanting light all come out to play. You may also find the pear alienating. Me, I like it; it’s artificial, but it’s not pretending. You keep the little tin of those little pear-flavored jewels in the pocket of that leather jacket and you watch the sun track across the hoardings as you listen to the buskers, taking your time.
It’s a good day.

currently online reading about the citywide party held last night in Philly (a sports thing happened) that I missed because I was home writing gay vampire fanfic, and I’m remembering when the eagles won the superb owl.
I remember walking over to Broad to see the festivities and watching a man walk into a liquor store, walk out with a couple six-packs, and start handing beers out to random people. who all proceeded to high-five him and open the beers and have a toast.
this was all in front of a cop, who, despite PA’s fairly draconian liquor laws and notoriously corrupt police force, just shrugged and went about his business. because on game night, Philadelphia belongs to Gritty and the Phans.
(to translate for my nerd-ass friends, Gritty is kind of a local trickster/chaos god who leads Philadelphians in sheet cake-related bacchanalias.)

Exploring the True Health Benefits of Wine Debunking Myths and Unveiling Facts
In recent years, the debate surrounding the health benefits of wine has gained significant attention, with conflicting information circulating about its potential advantages and drawbacks. As more people seek to make informed choices about their dietary habits, it's essential to separate fact from fiction when it comes to wine consumption. In this article, we delve into the science behind wine and explore its potential health benefits, while also dispelling common myths. Additionally, we'll discuss where you can conveniently shop wines online, through trusted platforms like Grandstore's online liquor store in South Africa.
Tumblr media
Wine has been a staple of human civilization for centuries, valued not only for its flavor but also for its potential health properties. One of the most well-known benefits of wine is its antioxidant content, particularly from compounds like resveratrol found in red wine. These antioxidants have been linked to various health benefits, including reducing inflammation, protecting against cardiovascular disease, and even potentially lowering the risk of certain cancers. However, it's essential to note that the concentration of antioxidants can vary depending on factors such as grape variety, winemaking techniques, and storage conditions.
Moderate wine consumption has also been associated with improved heart health, thanks to its ability to increase levels of "good" HDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of blood clot formation. Additionally, some studies suggest that moderate wine consumption may help lower blood pressure, improve blood vessel function, and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of moderation, as excessive alcohol consumption can have adverse effects on health, including liver damage, addiction, and an increased risk of accidents and injuries.
Contrary to popular belief, wine consumption in moderation may not necessarily lead to weight gain. While wine does contain calories, research suggests that moderate wine drinkers tend to have lower body mass indexes (BMIs) and smaller waist circumferences compared to non-drinkers or heavy drinkers. This phenomenon, known as the "French Paradox," has puzzled researchers for years and is often attributed to the Mediterranean diet's overall lifestyle, which includes regular, moderate wine consumption alongside a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.
Tumblr media
When it comes to shopping for wines online, convenience and variety are key considerations. In South Africa, online platforms like Grandstore's online liquor store offer a wide selection of wines to suit every palate and occasion. Whether you're looking for a bold red wine to pair with a hearty meal, a crisp white wine to enjoy on a warm summer evening, or a sparkling wine to celebrate a special occasion, you can find it all with just a few clicks. Additionally, shopping for wines online allows you to explore new and unique offerings from local and international producers, all from the comfort of your home.
For those who prefer the convenience of having wines delivered straight to their doorstep, online wine shopping offers a hassle-free solution. With secure payment options and reliable delivery services, you can rest assured that your favorite wines will arrive safely and promptly, ready to be enjoyed at your leisure. Additionally, many online wine retailers offer helpful resources such as tasting notes, food pairing suggestions, and customer reviews to assist you in making informed purchasing decisions.
Tumblr media
While the health benefits of wine are well-documented, it's essential to approach consumption with moderation and mindfulness. Enjoying wine as part of a balanced lifestyle that includes regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and responsible drinking habits can contribute to overall well-being. By shopping for wines online through trusted platforms like The Grandstore's online liquor store in South Africa, you can access a diverse selection of quality wines and enhance your enjoyment of this timeless beverage.
Cheers to good health and happy wine tasting!

How Drizly Works: Business Model & Revenue Model
The company currently has a tie-up with around 1400 liquor stores. It offers on-demand alcohol delivery markets in North America, including Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Chicago, California, San Francisco, and many others.
The on-demand alcohol delivery giant has, to date, conducted five rounds of funding, raising a significant amount of $69 million from different leading investors.
In its last funding round, which was held in August 2020, Drizly secured an enormous sum of $50 million from a group of investors that included Avenir and Tiger Global, among others.
The business model of Drizly is pretty unique. The start-up neither sells nor delivers alcohol, which means that it does not have any products or a delivery fleet of its own.
It directs all the orders to its partner stores and then fulfills all deliveries using its inventory and delivery personnel. This is the reason why Drizly proudly calls itself a tech intermediary.
To maintain compliance with the law governing the legal drinking age, Drizly follows a strict age verification process, ensuring that on-demand alcohol delivery to minors is prevented.
While placing an order for alcohol on-demand through the Drizly app, the consumer is required to confirm their age via an online verification process before Drizly approves the charge.
Drizly partners with local retailers to offer a wide selection of alcohol. Customers order through the Drizly app or website, and the retailers handle the delivery.

Seeing--or is it tasting?--is believing
Before coming to grad school, I used to lead whisky tastings back in Philadelphia.  Sometimes for friends and sometimes for strangers, I got pretty good at being able to guide people through a proper tasting experience––from choosing the right glass and showcasing the impact of ice to talking about the molecular science of ethanol and exploring the various terroirs of Scotland.
Much like wine snobs, whisky lovers can be, frankly, insufferable at times.  If I had a dime for every time I heard someone say they only drink single malts and won’t touch a blended whisky, only to oogle over an overpriced bottle of Johnnie Blue (which is, you guessed it, a blend)….
Well, this strange phenomenon can likely be attributed to something called cognitive association, or brand equity.  The reality is that massive distillers or distributors like Edrington (Macallan), Diageo (Johnnie Walker), or Beam Suntory (Jim Beam/Makers/Yamazaki) dump millions of dollars each year into building and maintaining their brands so that when you see a $100+ bottle of Booker’s bourbon sitting alone on the top shelf of your local liquor store, you’re already preconditioned to believe that it’s liquid gold.  And don’t even get me started on the lore of Pappy Van Winkle.
Tumblr media
But after attempting far too many blind tastings over the past decade, I can tell you that at least I’ve been personally fooled far too many times to keep believing that superficial factors like brand recognition, bottle design, and price are all directly correlated to product quality.
Now look, I’m not saying that I don’t have my favorites––those matte black bottles, eye-popping ABVs, and sustainable farming stories from Octomore make me grab one of their bottles off the shelf every time I see them.  But actually, that’s kind of my point.
I wasn’t shocked at all to read about Wansink, Payne, and North’s research on North Dakotan wine, which more or less tells us that wine labels can bias expectations and tastiness ratings of both the wine in the bottle and the complementary food items that it is being served with.
My hypothesis is that most people just don’t have enough time to really care about everything.  You have to pick and choose your battles.  Imagine going through an entire day having an opinion on EVERYTHING you’re using, from the scent of the soap you wash your hands with to the brand of the toothbrush and toothpaste you use to the logo on the faucet and so on. Funny enough, you might be thinking right now that you DO have an opinion on every single one of those products, but have you really done enough research to know why you choose the products you do?  Did you know that Colgate, for example, makes over 20 different varieties of toothpaste, each with unique ingredients, active formulas, and flavors.  I can't imagine you've tried them all. Now, multiply that across the many brands and thousands of products you use each day, and the number of choices grows exponentially beyond comprehension.
Tumblr media
My point is, it would be utterly exhausting to research everything deeply enough to truly form your own unique opinion, and that is why we NEED brands to tell us which is best.  We actively rely on many sources to make these day-to-day decisions easier, whether that is the opinions of our friends and families, online reviews, or even product placement and advertising experts.  But just because you’ve been led down one path and told that it was the best choice, doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily true.
In conclusion, I’m not saying that you should try to impress your next dinner guests with your finest bottle of North Dakotan wine, but hey, maybe if you’re feeling cheeky and running low on Napa Cabs, you can try putting out an unmarked decanter with something cheaper to see if anyone is the wiser….

2024-04-06: Bootleggers (Faction)
Although Prohibition for most of the nation lasted from 1920 to 1933, Mississippi's version came much earlier and ended many years after the repeal of the national Prohibition. The state of Tennesse (just north of the Delta) likewise continued its policy of prohibition for several years after the national repeal. Thus, a robust bootlegging network was born across the river in Arkansas.
Despite Mississippi's vocal insistence on abstinence from alcohol, many parts of the Delta paid little mind to prohibition. In a bizarre twist, liquor stores advocated alongside religious leaders for prohibition on alcohol, though the liquor stores were doing it avoid having to pay taxes on their wares. Farm owners in the Delta were especially resistant to prohibition, as alcohol helped keep the workers happy.
Moonshine was typically distilled in makeshift stills on the western banks of the Mississippi River that weren't covered by levees in Arkansas. These were protected by a series of gun-toting bootleggers who would kill anyone unfamiliar on sight, though national prohibition eventually succeeded in driving out many of the land-based distillers.
Enterprising individuals instead began to outfit houseboats with stills to make booze on the move. Or they coordinated with organized crime groups up north (often out of Chicago) to arrange for boats loaded with spirits to find their way downriver to the Delta. There are even tales of some whiskey boats that have supernatural assistance on their side to either evade detection or just travel faster than the law.
Almost all the bootleg alcohol enters the state from the river. In the Delta, there are two main ports: Greenville and Rosedale. Greenville's still rebuilding its ports after the massive flooding caused by the levee break in 1927. That leads Rosedale as the primary point of entry for river-based bootlegging. The main problem for the bootleggers in Rosedale is a temperance-minded woman named Florence W. Sillers. Even though boats carrying alcohol can stay on the Arkansas side of the river where alcohol is legal, Florence has friends in high places who keep watch for suspected transportation of alcohol.
If Florence and her lackeys can be avoided long enough to unload a boat, the bootleggers whisk the cargo into automobiles and trucks for transport to the rest of the state.
-----------
A surprising amount of this post comes directly from Florence W. Sillers' own account of the time period as published in History of Bolivar County, Mississippi. I found an excerpt of it online, but you might have some problems downloading the file since it's not hosted on a website protected by HTTPS.

Empower the Surge of Online Alcohol Retail in the UK by Web Scraping Liquor Data
Tumblr media
The Alcohol eCommerce sector has experienced rapid expansion, a trend accentuated by the pandemic. Post-pandemic, factors like convenience, safety, and home delivery gained prominence, propelling alcohol sales through eCommerce. In the UK, Kantar noted a £261 million surge in rising sales, with online and convenience stores emerging as the key beneficiaries. Intriguingly, the IWSR Drinks Market Analysis Report 2022 highlighted a global preference for websites over apps when purchasing alcohol online, except in China and Brazil. Notably, in the UK, major online alcohol purchases occur via retailer websites, not apps.
Tumblr media
Research Approach
Our research was conducted through liqour data scraping, spanning February 2022 to June 2022. The focus of our study encompassed two prominent grocery retailers, namely Tesco and Ocado, along with three noteworthy grocery apps, namely Gorillas, Weezy, and Getir. The specific category under scrutiny throughout our analysis was alcohol.
Identifying The Alcohol Price Leader
Tumblr media
Tesco's Leadership In Alcohol Pricing
Throughout February to June 2022, Tesco consistently established itself as the front-runner in price leadership within the Alcohol category. Leveraging e-commerce data scraping, Tesco secured the lowest prices for 38.9% of its products. Ocado followed closely with 33.8%, while Gorillas exhibited the most minor dominance, leading in price for only 5.6% of its alcohol offerings.
Nonetheless, Tesco's grip on price leadership experienced a gradual erosion over the months. Commencing in February,e-commerce data scraping revealed Tesco's hold on the lowest price for 44% of its products, which tapered to just over 36% by June. Conversely, Ocado depicted an inverse trajectory—starting at a 32% price leadership in February, climbing to 35.3% by June.
An intriguing contender, illuminated through e-commerce data scraping, was Getir. Commencing with a modest 8.2% price leadership for its products in February, Getir's proportion progressively expanded, culminating at 14.5% in June.
Retailers Employing Discounts To Bolster Alcohol Sales
Leveraging discounts using liquor product data collection proves to be an effective strategy to attract consumers impacted by inflation. Through loyalty card discounts, reward vouchers, and various promotional tactics, retailers enhance the allure of their products, rendering them more competitive and appealing to customers. Maintaining competitiveness necessitates retailers' awareness of their rivals' discount offerings. Moreover, price monitoring helps comprehend the potential ramifications of substantial discounting and its influence on profit margins.
Tumblr media
A wave of European and UK startups, including Jiffy, Dija, Weezy, Zapp, Getir, and Gorillas, entered the scene with a shared commitment: to provide the swiftest and most cost-effective grocery delivery services.
Our dataset uncovered intriguing discounting dynamics among these players. Gorillas maintained a discounting strategy in line with its competitors. Conversely, Getir appeared to adopt a more aggressive approach, veering towards deep discounting. Notably, Getir consistently offered the highest discounts throughout the observed period. In April, their discounts surged to nearly 9% more than those of Ocado—the runner-up in discounting.
As previously discussed, the period from February to June saw Getir securing price leadership. It's plausible that their strategy of deep discounting contributed to this accomplishment. In contrast, Gorillas opted for a different route, showcasing the lowest and almost negligible discounting practices.
Observing Price Index Trends Over Five Monthss
Our focus shifted towards analyzing Price Index (PI) trends among these five retailers, encompassing February to June 2022. It enabled us to gauge the fluctuations in alcohol prices over this period.
Please note: Retailers operating at the 100% mark indicated they were selling at an optimal price, refraining from undercutting the market. The pricing sweet spot rested between 95% and 105%. Deviating lower would potentially jeopardize profit margins while exceeding this range indicated that the retailer needed to position more competitively.
Price Index Insights: Retailers' Strategic Positioning
Among the retailers, Weezy displayed the most optimal Price Index, residing within the 100% to 102% range.
Conversely, Gorillas held the lowest Price Index, from 89% to 91%.
Getir, initially boasting a lower Price Index of 96.1% in February, progressively climbed to surpass 110% in April, May, and June.
Agility In Price Adjustments: Identifying Leaders
Tumblr media
Stability In Pricing Trends Among Retailers
Predominantly, most retailers adhered to a consistent pricing trajectory using liquor product data scraping, maintaining a degree of competitive alignment. Their pricing approaches were relatively well-matched.
Yet, Gorillas stood out for implementing significant price adjustments in specific months. Notably, they enacted a notable reduction of 3.8% in prices in March. Subsequently, in May, Gorillas increased 5.5% in their pricing.
In that same eventful May, Weezy embarked on a distinctive strategy, considerably slashing prices by 10%. This move widened the gap between Gorillas and Weezy.
Preserving Sales Through Stock Availability Management
Tumblr media
Diverse Stock Availability Among Retailers
Our data analysis unveiled distinct levels of stock availability across the retailers. Ocado, in particular, maintained the highest availability throughout the observed five months. At a robust 100%, their stock levels gradually receded, concluding at 95.8% by June.
Tesco, on the other hand, encountered a pronounced decline in availability during May and June. At 97%, availability dwindled to 92-93%.
Gorillas consistently exhibited the lowest stock availability, fluctuating between 90% and 94% across the months.
Weezy demonstrated steadfast consistency, upholding a consistent 95% availability throughout five months.
Concluding Insights
In the UK market, a favorable inclination towards online alcohol purchases is evident, predominantly catalyzed by shifts in consumer behavior prompted by the pandemic. According to the IWSR Drinks Market Analysis Report 2022, markets primarily driven by websites, like the UK, prioritize a wide product range and competitive pricing. Both these factors wield significant influence in purchase decisions. Conversely, consumers in app-centric markets hold distinct preferences. While price remains a consideration, it is less vital than convenience and speed.
Product Data Scrape is committed to upholding the utmost standards of ethical conduct across our Competitor Price Monitoring Services and Mobile App Data Scraping operations. With a global presence across multiple offices, we meet our customers' diverse needs with excellence and integrity.
