I've had a few lessons on python...and I still really don't like it. I always feel like the code is missing something and the programme misses out labelling things like 'variables'. This might just be because I started with Javascript and creating those variables you would 'let *insert variable name here*' instead of just randomly writing a word and hoping it picks it up as a variable. I'm sure Python will grow on me in time but right now I'm still not convinced it's better than other languages 😅

Learning Opportunities aka “NOW WHY DID THAT BREAK IT”

So I'm a mid-30's career changer, and I know that the best way to learn programming is to poke it. I'm doing the C# Fundamentals for Absolute Beginners and while each video is ~15-20 minutes, I spent about four hours on the Methods one because I decided to get Fancy

To teach Methods, he had a pre-written Name Game (enter first name, last name, and birth city when prompted, and it reverses them) that worked, but had an ungodly amount of repetition and bloat. He then showed several different ways of streamlining it into Methods so you only had to type things out once, right? 

I try to change  things up to make sure I'm understanding rather than copying, so since it was about reversing the input I made a "90's Satanic Scare" version. Console warns against secret mind-control messages in your children's music, so you enter three lines of "your child's favorite song" and then it says oh no, the secret message is {input written backwards}. Slightly more complicated than his, because I wanted to flip the strings ALL the way around, not just backwardsFirst backwardsSecond backwardsThird but the full play-the-record-in-reverse treatment. AND, third complication, I pause the videos and try to complete things myself before it’s fully explained

All this to say that changing two things would have saved me about three hours:

If I’d watched a little further into his explanation of WHY you would overload Methods (ie have more than one version with the same name), because I might’ve processed the implications of what he’d said about input parameters

If I’d read the FULL text of the goddamn error popup, which said not “would you like to continue running anyway?” but “would you like to run the last successful version?” BECAUSE THEN I might not have generated many and increasingly flummoxed notes about why I wasn’t getting repeatable results --not at first realizing it was INCONSISTENT results, but thinking I’d mixed up my various versions, thus generating more confusion because my mental list of code combinations I THOUGHT I must have tried was getting longer and longer

Too many game ideas but all the other routes I have tried before have been plagued with "pay-to-unlock" assets and free trials that only last a week, A WEEK! unless you have a full team working on the same thing, a single inexperienced person/creature can not develop a whole ass GAME in a week! We need more good indy games, not another cash grabby skibbidy clone!

when I finish learning how to use roblox studio and 3d model stuff in there- and blender, I'm gonna make ugcs that cost no robux, and learn how to code just to make a game(I'm already thinking of 2 possible games I could make, I have a storyboard and drawings on paper of how I'm gonna do that)(I hate coding so I'm gonna do some beginning code on scratch(yes the kids website) before doing typing code and crap)

Okay so it's a great day to go see if something like Khan Academy or other freebie learning zone has a Computer Networking 101. Turns out KhanAcademy.org is still free for now. I'm sure it mines the hell out of your data like anything else. I use one of my like 10 google logins. Did you know you didn't used to have a phone number to get a gmail address? There are still some e-mail services that don't require phone numbers, though they have different limitations and uses. Becoming a suite was quite another magnitude for a login. I'm probably going to try to find a couple amusing videos. Like probably from youtube, unless I can find something on vimeo or the fediverse. A lot of this is learning how the internet goes. It teaches The Names and Commands of The Internet. Sort of like programing languages like C(++++?) and Python are Vocabulary and Grammar for Taming Your Processor. If you're willing to go with lowtech graphics to skip modern spyware and webtracking, it's honestly a fun little ride. Learning to type physical conditioning. However you make 15-30 minutes almost every day good and fun for yourself. (Sometimes 2d alien fun for points is enough, ya?) Yeah, those are for windows. Most macintosh users these days can maybe blow a few currency on a indie app, eh? Linux users -- you already know how to use freeware and honestly I'm not expecting to be read by a lot of linux users on this thread. (@ me for linux introductions ig too) Android? Basically in the same app boat as mac... Shout up for android power user info, like sideloading but... I haven't been browsing the indie APKs or the flash community in ages.

And uh, get a keyboard. bluetooth is fine for a while and better for someone trying to start this kind of project on a phone or a tablet. If someone is sticking to typing games for a few weeks or several, it might be worth considering getting a corded keyboard -- Anyone who is topping over 45wpm and heading for 60+ will find that bluetooth keyboards may not keep up with that leveled up meat input. (I can type around 90wpm or so when I'm on a roll and get frustrated pretty quickly.) Most Importantly: SAVE YOUR PROGRESS (u matter), & Look It Up before you Give It Up.

another thought about "gen z and gen alpha don't know how to use computers, just phone apps" is that this is intentionally the direction tech companies have pushed things in, they don't want users to understand anything about the underlying system, they want you to just buy a subscription to a thing and if it doesn't do what you need it to, you just upgrade to the more expensive one. users who look at configuration files are their worst nightmare

I truly, TRULY do not know how to say this, because the fact that I have to say it makes me feel like I am losing my grip on reality. But no, in the post-capitalistic anarchist utopia, I will not be relying on “autistic minecraft girlies” to be building inspectors because - and this may shock you - one of those occupations takes years of education in how to read and interpret hundreds of thousands of lines of regulations based on complicated math and physics that were the result of decades of tragedy and death, and the other one involves playing a children’s video game.
