Hey Swedish side of Tumblr!

Me and a friend are interested in learning Swedish, but we’re not sure where to begin looking for resources

I want to avoid Duolingo’s AI garbage and slow pace, but I would appreciate any recommendations for dedicated Swedish learning apps/websites/videos/whatever!

(Preferably free, but a one-time payment would be fine ig; I don’t want to do repeated payments if I can avoid it)

I recently started learning swedish and obviously sometimes I have to google some stuff that aren't explained in the book but today I realised how weird it can be because how do you explain to someone who's going through my search history that by researching "difference between god and bra" I didn't mean what it looks like

Here's a little vocab list that might help you with your reading comprehension! Please note that the 'right' translation of these words are often dependent on the context, so their use might be different from what I wrote in this vocablist.

Subject: transition words

Transitional terms give writers the opportunity to prepare readers for a new idea, connecting the previous sentence to the next one. (source: Merriam Webster)

Men, aber = but

För, eftersom = because

(Där)för att, eftersom = because, as

Till exempel = for example, for instance

Så(ledes), alltså = therefore, then

Dessutom, därtill = moreover, in addition

Å ena sidan / å andra sidan = on the one hand / on the other hand

Ju, när allt kommer omkring, på det hela taget = after all

Alltnog, nåväl = in short, anyway, anyhow

Under = during

Some example sentences:

Hon var väldigt bra, men sedan gick det utför. = She was very good, but then things went downhill.

Han kan inte komma för/eftersom han är sjuk. = He can't come because he is sick.

Till exempel ett äpple. = For example, an apple.

Inte för att jag inte skulle vilja. = Not because I don't want to.

Ni vill alltså inte sälja det? = So you don't want to sell it?

Han avskedades och fick dessutom böter. = He was fired and moreover/in addition, fined.

Å ena sidan är han väldigt stilig, å andra sidan är han väldigt oförskämd. = On the one hand he is very handsome, on the other hand he is very rude.

Hon är ju bara ett barn. = She is just a child.

Nåväl, för att göra en lång historia kort. = Anyhow, to make a long story short.

Under min frånvaro. = During my absence.

ways to make duolingo useful

1. jump units

in the new "tree" all the new vocabulary is in the first lesson, then duolingo makes you study it for like a week if you're lucky, so if you're confident you've learnt all the new words just jump to the next unit (I also find myself remembering my mistakes better if I make them while trying to jump than when I make them in regular lessons)

❗after jumping always come back to the stories you missed, they're like the most useful thing there is in the app

2. use other resources

I know this is a post about duolingo, but people, mostly beginners, seem to think that they only need duolingo to become fluent. my mom has a 700 days strike and she still can't keep a simple conversation in english or understand an episode of fucking teletubbies, that should tell you everything. read content for beginners, watch youtube videos, tv-shows, use other apps, I promise the owl won't kill you for it

3. stop when it starts slowing you down

trust me you don't need to use duolingo when you're intermediate, it's just not worth it. leave it for the days you can't study properly and want to do at least something

Updates on Learning Swedish 1/∞: Kampen fortsätter

I've been trying to reactivate my Swedish skills a bit during this year but it's been hard going. I've never been particularly enthusiastic about learning Swedish (it was a compulsory subject at school), but the truth remains that it's actually a really useful language to me in real life, so… I've been trying to brush up on my Swedish.

To get into the mood, I read some Swedish cookbooks and comics earlier this year. And most thrillingly, I've enrolled on a Swedish conversation course for the rest of the year! I'm quite excited but also really nervous. It starts in a couple of weeks and I'm not exactly sure what to expect.

hello!! i'm aria from slovenia, and i'm very interested in learning languages :) this is my language learning blog (langblr), but i'm not sure if i'll post much as i'm very new to tumblr and a tad shy hahah. however, i would love to participate in language exchange, please message me if you're interested!!

these are the languages i'm learning:

german - i've been learning german since 9 years old at school but i'm very bad at it :/ i can understand a lot, but i can't speak very well, as is with most languages haha. i should be at level b1, but i don't think i am really. it's one of my priority languages as i am learning it at school.

spanish - my parents spoke spanish around me when i was young, so i have a certain feeling for it, but again, i can't speak it very well although i understand a lot. i love spanish as a language and would love to improve it!

dutch - i think i speak dutch quite well, i can speak without many pauses and even think in the language, but it's been a while since i've practiced so i'm not sure how good i am now?

french - i used to be able to speak french quite fluidly - far from fluently, i just could speak without many pauses - but that was 5 years ago and now i've forgotten pretty much everything, but i've been trying to learn it again.

japanese - i've been learning japanese for over a year now but i'm veeery bad at it :( i barely know the writing systems and i can't communicate at all. so i wouldn't benefit from a language partner yet, but i would like a study buddy. any help would be greatly appreciated!

swedish - i've also been learning swedish for a while, i'm better at it than japanese, but still not good enough. i can say some basic sentences but couldn't hold a conversation, so the same as with japanese!

serbian - as i'm slovene i understand almost everything in serbian, but i can't speak it at all, i mix everything up with slovene. there's also very few resources, so i haven't been really motivated despite having a lot of serbian friends.

Guys. Do any of you find blookets helpful for your language learning? I've found them super helpful lately when learning German!!

They're so interactive (?). It's almost like a kahoot, but it has like different game modes! They're super fun and I definitely recommend it!
