AI: Friend or Foe? | Vocab
Hi friends! I've been trying to broaden my horizons by reading Japanese news articles about topics I wouldn't typically read or talk about in Japanese as an attempt to learn new words.
Today, I read Hiragana Times' article entitled "Are robots enemies or friends of humans?" It was a brief article that mentioned how in the West we view A.I. and robots as a sign of impending dystopia and we have media like the Terminator and the Matrix that show us at odds with A.I., while Japan views them as friends/helpers and have media like Astro Boy and Doraemon that depict them as being helpful. Do you think this is true? I find that a lot of nuance is lacking from the article, but I wonder if this is because the magazine is intended for Japanese-learning foreigners, so they may cut down on things in order to make the translations appear less intimidating. One of the cool things about Hiragana Times is that it's entirely bilingual!
Here are some of the vocab words I picked up:
人工知能 [じんこうちのう] artifical intelligence (A.I.)
搭載 [とうさい] being equipped with
親しむ [たしむ] to be intimate with; to befriend
受け入れる [うけれる] to accept; to receive; to agree
一方 [いっぽう] on the one hand; on the other hand; meanwhile
欧米 [おうべい] the West; Europe and America
象徴 [しょうちょう] symbol (of something abstract); (symbolic) representation
見なす [みなす] to regard (as); to consider (to be); to deem; to look upon (as)
業務 [ぎょうむ] task; actions; affairs; duties
効率化 [こうりつか] making efficient; optimization
貢献 [こうけん] contribution (furthering a goal or cause); services (to a cause)
懸念 [けねん] worry; fear; anxiety; concern
根強い [ねづよい] firmly rooted; deep-seated
#for the record i hate the way that america is implementing a.i.#it should not be used to steal anything and yet it does#vocab#japanese#learn japanese#resources#study resources#japanese resources#learning through reading#learning through immersion#reading in japanese#japanese news#japan

the sheer difference in the amount of kanji that i've noticed that i have an easier time memorizing bc i've been consuming it through reading/interacting with media that i enjoy rather than flipping through flashcards or quizzes is ASTRONOMICAL
sure, i still study and use flashcards and quizzes, but i have noticed that i've had an easier time learning kanji that i had more difficulty with memorizing through flashcards and quizzes through reading bc im just constantly exposing myself to it
Today I came across a reel talking about learning kanji. He said learn the basic once like 義 (GI) and then continue with exposure, not rote memorization.
I think I need to plaster "Give yourself exposure, not stress" everywhere though.
Give yourself exposure, not stress [when learning kanji].

Was thinking about Kitali and languages as I was falling asleep last night and she's gonna sound weird and out of place no matter where in Ishgard she is bc of how many registers she mixes.
Like she would absolutely have learned to speak Ishgardian before she learned to read it, and most of that exposure would've been with working class people from the Brume and the lower levels of the city. And especially so during the Restoration because she would've been spending most, if not all of, her time with the Skysteel workers. So she's going to adopt most of the speech patterns and mannerisms from them.
And then she's also married to a nobleman, who has a distinctly different speech pattern and accent, and because she spends the time she's not working or out dealing with Scion bullshit with him, she's going to pick those up as well and incorporate it into her understanding of The Ishgardian Language.
And because she learned to speak it before she learned to read it, the first time she tries to read one of Aymeric's books not written in Eorzean common, she's going to look up at him with anguish and confusion and betrayal as if he's the one responsible for why Ishgardian is spelled Like That. And then proceeds to bitch and moan about it while trying to reverse engineer it through context clues alone.
And then on top of all that, once Estinien joins the Scions and she's spending a lot of time around him and speaking in Ishgardian to deliberately exclude everyone else from their conversations, she's going to pick up his Coerthan idioms because I think he would stubbornly cling to those even after living in Ishgard for 20 years.
I just think language barriers are neat and I feel like they aren't utilised in game enough bc Video Game Mechanics.
#Kitali Moonblade#i saw this post lamenting about bilingual/multilingual people with echos are just cheating all the time bc they can Automatically Understand#and if that's how you want to run your shit then more power to you#but I don't think that the echo works like a TARDIS translation where you just hear Everything in whatever language you speak natively#i think you're hearing a bunch of gobbledygook but because the echo allows you to understand the hearts of all of whatever the phrasing is#you can still get the gist of it#and the more fluent you are in a language the less it feels like trying to swim through mud#does that make sense?#like Kitali is already bilingual by the time her echo manifested so she learned those languages all naturale#and the echo can certainly help act as a cheat sheet#but idk I think keeping language barriers high makes for more immersive and interesting worldbuilding#so im not going to just hand waive it like the game does for expediences sake

One of the interesting things about learning asl from different teachers is that you learn obscure dialect beef you’ve never heard of before
#asl#I’m inclined to go with my first prof bc he was Deaf tbh#but I’m learning fun differences like. the way to sign what#or brother/sister#or how#or strong opinions on the directionality of the sign for deaf#I do love a good regional variation#yes please teach me how to say words in lots of different accents 👀#I wish I had more folks to practice with tbh#I need to work on speed of comprehension#my current teacher taught at a state school for the deaf for like 50 years so she has been through it#and she’s lived through a lot of changes and standardization so she does tend to teach us multiple variations#she also taught during desegregation#and heard a lot of really wild and horrible stories#it’s fun to hear the stories but I do kind of miss the immersive environment of my first class#he would go around the room asking us questions at the beginning of every class#if nothing else the question ‘do you want kids’ is burned into my brain forever#bc I sure wasn’t expecting to be asked that at 9am at age 18

Seitokai Book Club Master List
Hi!
Sometimes, life gets the best of me and I'm not able to make my usual announcement post on here about what the current Seitokai book club read is. However, I do actually update it on the master Google Doc (links to associated vocab lists included), my Natively profile, and on the Seitokai instagram. These include the books from the start of the club in 2022 until present day.
If you're not particularly interested in the vocab lists or you hate accessing Google Docs bc it takes up Google Drive space, you can also see it on THIS NATIVELY LIST.
Or if you're thinking "ALL OF THOSE OPTIONS SUCK, I'M NOT LEAVING TUMBLR!," fair enough, I can't argue with that. You can always DM me, send an ask, or even @tokidokitokyo might make a post about it as well.

Language Learning Plateaus: Why They Happen & How to Overcome Them
Imagine this: You’ve spent months learning Italian. You’ve mastered greetings, ordered cappuccinos with confidence, and even navigated a conversation about your favorite films. But suddenly, your progress grinds to a halt. New vocabulary feels elusive, grammar rules confuse you, and every conversation feels like running a mental marathon. This is the language learning plateau—a phase where…

currently taking great satisfaction in the fact that umrao jaan soundtrack is almost completely ghazals and the other three songs are thumri or classical composition <333
#this story and everything about it has slowly been consuming my being for the last 2 weeks#the things you can learn from watching one movie!!! i just learned that the song pratham dhar dhyan not only is it a great composition to#listen to & cool for how they used it to showcase the literal growth(aging) and artistic growth of the two young girls but also each verse#of the song is composed in a different raag and so not when it goes back and forth from the music teacher to the girls voices he is actually#taking them through 7 different raags and thus showing their learning & artistic growth in that way too#guys i love classical dance & music so much there is literally no end to what you can learn and immerse yourself in....#anyways i need to sleep speaking of that bc i have dance class in the morning lol#umrao jaan

I generally believe that exposure to a thing leads inevitably to familiarity with the thing but my one exception is (American) football. Fourteen years I watched that shit and I still cannot explain what a first down is.
#i truly believe it would be easier for me to learn a foreign language solely through immersion than it is to understand football#admittedly i did read through most of the games#other ppl were watching football and i was learning about dragons#i think i won this one#l’histoire de ma vie

so i’ve been learning french for six whole years now, but i’ve never actually learned how to pronounce the alphabet until now. everytime i’ve read a book in french or w/e and have had to read an individual letter i’ve sounded it out in my head with the english pronunciation, with like a french accent lol. now suddenly i decided to look it up while waiting for the bus and it took literally less than one minute to learn. idk why i’ve postponed this one extremely small task since i was literally a teenager
#i guess because i’ve learned french almost entirely through immersion#and this one thing required some actual studying lol#and i just wouldn’t do it#’’’’studying’’’’’ aka listening to a children’s song abt the alphabet two times

you might like 結婚するって、本当ですか or the 君の膵臓をたべたい manga. do you use Natively? It's pretty nice for finding suggestions bc they recently added filters for genres. If you do use it, feel free to follow me! (It doesn't give notifications if you follow someone, but if you do, send me a message on here and I'll follow you back!)
My current favorite manga is 王子様、この恋は運命ですか?. It's not seinen, but it is josei. It's got a nice pace going to it, she's a college student and (as of rn) has a good head on her shoulders. I'm reading it on cmoa.jp.
(i also want some manga recs if ppl are about to start replying bc im NOSEY and i love to add to my TBR list)
hii does anyone have any manga recommendations?? I've been really into スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり and スキップとローファー and was wondering if anyone knew about other cute, more mature romance-y stories like those! if it helps I also really liked 逃げるは恥だが役に立つ and ReLIFE. I'm a huge fan of 青年 in general
