The Accidental Empress Reading Blog I: Evil Gackl and the regency of Archduchess Sophie

I knew what I was getting into when I started The Accidental Empress, I really did. This historical fiction romance novel by Allison Pataki about Empress Elisabeth of Austria doesn't have particularly flying reviews in Goodreads, mainly to the historical inaccuracies and mischaracterizations. But I wanted to judge it by myself, specially since this is a very popular novel.

But I'm only one chapter in and this is my only reaction:

I have so many things to say about this chapter alone that I'm going to do a break down of it. I'm not planning to do this with every chapter (it will take me forever to finish it if I do), so enjoy this over analyzing reading blog, it won't happen again!

We start the chapter with Elisabeth and Helene outdoors, hiding from someone. We soon learn that that someone is their 13-years-old brother Karl Theodor "Gackl". Who is a bully that constantly torments them and insults them. I wish I was making this up.

In reality, Karl Theodor was Elisabeth's favorite brother and they remained close all their lives; he even named one of his daughters after her. Karl Theodor must have been a very charming and likeable man, since everyone that knew him held him in high esteem. Needless to say, he was nothing like how Pataki chose to portray him.

Because changing Gackl's personality was a deliberate choice by the author, in her own words: "I needed a mechanism for some early character development for the spirited, plucky young Sisi, and so Karl became an early opponent of sorts". I'm not that advanced into the book to decide if this benefited Elisabeth's character arc; but Gackl just bullying his elder sisters with no consequence seems kinda... dumb?

Continuing with the chapter, after this (they escape from Gackl by throwing rocks at him or something? I don't remember) the family gathers to dinner. Here we are told a little more of the family, and we find out that Elisabeth's eldest brother Ludwig Wilhelm "Louis" just... doesn't exist in this book? Karl Theodor is referred as the eldest son and heir more than once?? Weird choice, specially since the second book (yes this has a sequel) covers the Mayerling affair, in which Louis' daughter Countess Marie Larisch played a key role.

During dinner comes the unavoidable moment in which Ludovika announces that her sister Sophie asked for Helene's hand in marriage for her son, the young Emperor Franz Josef. This never happened, but (with great sorrow) I'll let it slide for the sake of the narrative.

Up until that point this novel had been your average, overly done, "Sisi lives free of worries in humble Possenhofen until her sister is told she's going to marry the emperor". I had nothing positive to say about it, but also nothing negative. It is a curse of contemporary Sisi adaptations that a relative she had a good relationship with is turned into a sort of antagonist (think Helene in RTL's Sisi and Ludovika in Netflix's The Empress), so even Gackl's villain arc didn't upset me that much.

You know what did upset me? This:

WHAT??? Franz Josef had been emperor since 1848. There was no regency, Sophie didn't had to rule anything. He was only eighteen, but he was of age and took charge of his reign from the very beginning. The implication that only since 1853 he had power is insane.

I already fear that Pataki went down the path of "Franz didn't do anything wrong, ever! It was his evil mother who ordered all those executions!" In fact, a couple of lines later Elisabeth recalls Franz Josef as "schrink[ing] whenever his mother had spoken" when she met him in 1848, a few months before the abdication of emperor Ferdinand. Which is also total crap.

And if I had any hope left for nuanced portrayal of Sophie, I completely lost it when Elisabeth recalls her meeting with her aunt:

Wow I can't wait to see the rest of her characterization! *sarcasm*

So far the writing itself had been okay-ish, even if I already had problems with the characterization and historical accuracy. But from this point onward we are delivered incredibly awkward expository dialogues, which completely took me out of the novel because it was obvious that the characters weren't talking to each other, but explaining to the reader the historical context. Like this just isn't a natural sounding dialogue at all:

"Your father is referring to the fact"???? I understand this novel is aimed at a general audience, but having the characters literally explaining the history (specially since this is recent history for them! it happened less than five years ago!!) feels extremely forced to me. Duke Max's dialogue alone worked fine, a voice in off could've explained the rest.

The chapter wraps up after this with Ludovika informing that Elisabeth will also accompany Helene to meet her betrothed (say it with me: Helene and Franz Josef were never engaged!), then the girls have an emotional talk in their bedroom and the chapter is over. I'll give Pataki one point for originality because she didn't follow the typical path of Helene being groomed to become empress for years and even had her oppose to the idea of marrying Franz Josef, but that's it.

And to finish this ridiculously long reading blog, I left under the cut all the inaccuracies that, while don't actually affect the plot so in theory can be forgiven, annoyed me anyway!

The Aunt Myth strikes! I don't blame Pataki for this mistake, since she probably took it from Hamann's biography. I made a whole post about how this is incorrect, but in short: while it's true that the Ducal household was in mourning, it wasn't for an aunt, but for Duke Georg of Saxe-Altenburg, Queen Therese of Bavaria's brother (so he wasn't even related to Elisabeth).

Actually Ludovika herself was extremely introverted, and according to her granddaughter Amalie of Urach, every interaction with people outside her inner circle was a torment for the Duchess. Public events and social gatherings caused Ludovika a lot of anxiety and she tried to avoid them at all cost, often excusing herself alleging being ill. All her children were said to also be very timid, most famously Elisabeth, who apparently spoke so lowly that sometimes it was hard to understand what she was saying.

It wasn't unusual for royals to marry people they had never met in their life (that ended up being the case of Sisi's sister Marie), but Ludovika and Max knew each other since they were children. King Maximilian of Bavaria, Ludovika's father and Duke Max's great-uncle, was fond of his nephew and wanted him to be close to his daughters, partly because Duke Max was quite lonely as a child, and partly so he wouldn't be a stranger to his future wife. A nice gesture, but that didn't prevent the couple of being utterly miserable together once they married at 20-years-old.

I am once again asking writers to understand that this was just not a possibility. Netflix's The Empress also has a moment of "You will stay with me as a lady-in-waiting!!", ignoring that being a lady-in-waiting was technically a job that belonged to the women from the highest ranking noble families in the empire. Noble, not royal. Elisabeth was the granddaughter of a king, being a lady-in-waiting was beneath her status. Also, why is this presented as a good thing anyway? Sisi serving her own sister would've been humiliating for her.

This is a silly mistake to point out since it can even be justified within the text as Sisi not knowing the proper titles for being so young; but this is the me being annoying section so I'll point it out anyway: there was only one Crown Prince, the rest of Helene's hypothetical children would've been Archdukes or Archduchesses (the Crown Prince was also an Archduke, but it was more usual to call him by the former title). And the Crown Princess was the Crown Prince's wife, the Habsburgs never had a Crown Princess in her own right.

High class girls going into marriage completely ignorant about sex is an strangely common trope in historical fiction, and while this was true for some (this was the case of Stephanie of Belgium, at least according to her memoirs), most of them knew exactly what was supposed to happen. After all, producing an heir was their more important task, so why would they not be told how they were meant to achieve that?

Ludovika was well aware of that, and she did not keep her girls in the dark about sex. She always talked very openly about it, and was proud of having educated her daughters about what happened on the wedding night. So no, she didn't "only ever implied things"

To be fair with Pataki, she wouldn't have found this information regarding Ludovika in Elisabeth's biographies in English. All of this information I found in Martina Winkelhofer's biography, only published in 2021 and still untranslated in English. I think the biggest problem with this book in regards with historical accuracy is going to be that Pataki relied solely on outdated English sources that perpetuate myths that have been challenged in German works for the past decades.

okay, i wasn't planning to do this because i don't do analysis anymore (mainly because i suck at it) but since it wasn't the only ask i got, i'm going to try. obviously this is my interpretation, it doesn't mean that it's the only one etc etc.

Disclaimer: i took out the parts that are repeated. i will also add definitions of "obvious" things (so that non-native english speakers can better understand).

Context

first, before analysing the song, let's see what Louis had to say about it.

Written in the same few days as the last two songs. Dave [Gibson] turned up with this picture on his phone of the title ‘She is beauty we are world class’ it was written in the toilet mirror of a train. Felt like a weird place for such a poetic sentiment (Louis via twitter, Wednesday 16 November 2022)

Louis tweeted about all the songs on FITF on 16 November 2022 because there was a listening party for the album. If you check the order of the tweets you will see that he tweeted the songs in this order: [his top 3], high in california, the greatest, waoyf (x), btm (x), ftm, chicago, all this time, out of my system, headline (x), saturdays (x) (x) (x), silver tongues (x), sibwawc, common people (x), holding onto heartache, ttwlg. the same order as the album, only in the tweets he didn't talk about angels fly. so, we can deduce that sibwawc was written together with saturdays and silver tongues. these 3 songs were written by David Sneddon, Joseph Cross, Louis and Theo Hutchcraft and produced by Joseph himself.

On this song, She is Beauty We Are World Class, it’s a thought-provoking title I don’t, you know, I’ve got I’m not certain what it means to me I’ve got an idea but it’s one of those phrases that I think is open to interpretation. Now Dave Sneddon, who I wrote this with. Joe Cross and Theo as well, really mad story he got the train down to the to the writing camp and on the toilet… in the toilet on the train written on the mirror was “she is beauty” and then he got a picture of it and then below it in a slightly different colored pen so we can’t work out from the same person someone, looks like someone had finished it off and put “we are world class”. He just kind of came with his picture, he was like this is an interesting title and that’s where this song kind of came from and I kind of like that someone else wrote it. We don’t really necessarily know what it meant to them; we know what it means to us. That was that was an interesting moment I think this is where we said, “let’s really try and go all in on the dance-ier sound of things” because I kind of allude to it on like All This Time but like it’s not quite as like trancey as this is. Almost has that kind of DMA’s lift with it with the instrumental that comes in on the post chorus. This for whatever reason this is, like it’s my best mate’s favorite tune I do really like this song but I think, it’s another one of those songs it’s important for the record to give a different flavor yeah. (Louis via youtube - Tuesday 13 December 2022).

what we learn from this is that 1) the title DOES mean something to Louis, 2) his #bestmate loves the song *pretends to be shocked*, 3) he believes the song is important to the album in a lyrical and musical aspect 4) links the song to All This Time for its musical part (he said it on twitter too, he said att and sibwawc are tracey - we love this pair of sisters 😌).

I’ve always loved All This Time. Just feel like a feel good tune from the off. James had a great vision for this song, it also helps ‘she is beauty’ not sick out on its own @LlSTENlNG_PARTY (Louis via twitter, Wednesday 16 November 2022)

Title

For reference: beauty is a noun that means an attractive quality that gives pleasure to those who experience it or think about it, or a person who has this attractive quality (cambridge dictionary).

we know that louis believes that the title is divided into “she is beauty” on the one hand and “we are world class” on the other. here we have two subjects “she” and “we”. it's interesting, because if we want to talk about the beauty of a person who uses the “she” pronoun, it would be “she is beautiful” but, in this case, we are saying that “she” is THE beauty herself. then there is a “we” (2 or more people) who are not up to her standard or level of beauty. so, if “she” is the beauty herself and “we” are not at her standard, that means that “we” is not up to the beauty standard. that could be one interpretation, another could be that “she is beauty” is being used as an idiomatic expression where it's synonymous with “she is beautiful” and the “we” is the rest of the world. a phrase of love, contemplation and admiration. only a person truly blinded by love could claim that there is, in effect, one person who is above the beauty of the rest of the world. we can also think that “she” and “we” are replacing something. i mean that Louis uses the pronoun “she” to refer to a thing or person and the pronoun “we” to refer to things or people.

Verse 1

Conversation is currency

“currency” can be the money that is used in a particular country at a particular time or the state of being commonly known or accepted, or of being used in many places – according to the cambridge dictionary. so it could be “conversation is money” or “conversation is diffusion”. both cases make sense. Louis is a person who sometimes - literally - gets paid to talk. also, being a big-name international artist, it makes a lot of sense that he also says it in the form of “sometimes i have to talk to people who just want money”. and, of course, the conversation is diffusion, of what? information, facts, anecdotes, opinions, preferences, literally everything. in this interpretation, there is something that spreads as people speak out. i think Louis could be alluding to both meanings, but, personally, i think it speaks more to the fact that there is something that is spreading.

Shapes become a language

relating to the interpretations of the first sentence, if we keep talking about money, the shapes could respect numbers or mathematical symbols. if we talk about diffusion, we could say that there are shapes that are being related to each other and that take on meaning.

Square eyes and sunglasses

we could say that square eyes is an idiomatic expression used to refer to when a person consumes a lot of media, especially tv. (source: cambridge dictionary). sunglasses cover the eyes, so we could say that this person, who consumes a lot of media, wants to hide it. If we continue talking about money, we can say that there is someone who consumes or is inside the media who wants to hide and if we talk about diffusion, we can say that there is a group of people who receive a lot of information and that is why they decide not to take it all, either because they like it or because they cannot.

Finding faces in the trees

this clearly alludes to pareidolia. if we continue with the interpretation of money, we can say that there is someone who thinks they are finding their way out but clearly they are not. if we talk about diffusion, we can think that there are one or more people who see things that are not real.

Fabricated fairytales

this is a breaking point for me because up to this point the money interpretation (as i call it hehe) made sense but for me this lyric breaks with that. in the money interpretation, i imagined that Louis was talking about his situation with people who are higher up than him in terms of power. Louis could have been saying that there are people in the media who are trying to hide and escape of a situation (which we don't know, but we can intuit that it has to do with him, obviously), but this lyric makes me believe that he's not talking about people with more power, but with less. if the song is from Louis’ point of view, that means that louis SEES and IS AWARE of lies that are spread. it is hyper-ultra-super-mega cool that he said FAIRYTALES !!!! fairytales have a purpose and that is ✨pleasing young people✨ as know as ✨ Louis’ target audience✨

so far Louis is telling us that there are fabricated fairytales that are being diffusing to generate money, and that the square eyes consume them and on that basis hide what they don't want to see, and then find things where there aren't any. gotcha.

Bring a new world to life

discarding the money interpretation, we can say that this lyric means that someone or something is able to change the situation and bring a new world into reality.

Sit down, sit down in the space and time

this lyric is very abstract and complex to me. for me it speaks of a protest in a specific space and time where Louis is not going to leave until he is heard.

Chorus

She is beauty

and here comes the question… who the hell is “she”? she is the lies, dear. lies are beautiful, who are we going to fool? if most people would rather believe things they know deep down are false and deny reality than accept it. (note that it's not “they” it's “she” so it's a particular lie).

And we are world class (woah-oh-oh)

okay, but who the hell is “we”? the world, sweetheart. the whole world (generalising) prefers to live in lies.

Forever

this is something that has always been repeated (its a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy baby).

We'll let the feeling last

the world is going to let that feeling last as long as it can, until the lie is unsustainable.

Verse 2

Escape the inevitable

as i said, lies are a ticking time bomb as they all, sooner or later, come to light. so people will always try to escape the “bomb” but it's impossible.

Fade into light

here he talks about how dark lies can be as they fade into the light (truth).

Soak up the empathy

here Louis is asking one or more people to fucking empathise with him. to put themselves in his fucking shoes or imagine what he is going through.

are we looking at the situation from my point of view or from yours?

special mention to Louis who put rainbow lights HIMSELF in his show during sibwawc since otb is not in the setlist (which is when he was literally surrounded by rainbow lights thanks to the fan project of the fans).

To conclude

the song talks, in MY opinion about closeting and its relationship with the general public and the fans. i'm not saying that Louis dedicated a song to antis saying that they fell for the lie because they are shit, no. i'm saying that the media induces these lies in our society and that the target audiences of the lie buy into them because they are innocent.

Maybe I overdid it with the shading... but yeah, here is an OC of mine, his name is Quetzal and I got the idea for him when I played the mobile game Dislyte.

There you can play multiple people who got blessed by one specific god from either greek, norse, egyptian or chinese mythology and now they have special powers, depending on which god gave them their blessing. 

I liked the idea, but there are so many other mythologies and religions out there, who have many interesting deities, gods, ghosts, whatever they may call them. I was always interested in Mayas, Aztecs and Incas, their history is filled with wonderful architecture, great sculptures, tribes... 

And yes, I’m aware, that they practiced some... strange rituals, but every religion had/has that, so... yeah.

This is my second digital art piece now and to be honest, I’m a bit proud of it. It was a pain, because I had to learn a lot about layers and brushes, but in the end, I think it looks quite nice. 

Also, his personality was inspired by Louis from The Walking Dead Game. Like, a lot. But I imagine Quetzal being a bit meaner and he’s getting angry real fast, although he still is a guy who loves jokes and plays around with his friends. In a rough, awkward way, sometimes.

I know, I’m not too creative with names, so I just named him Quetzal, after Quetzalcoatl, the god he got his blessing from. Quetzalcoatl was a very big green snake covered in the feathers of the holy quetzal bird. He also had wings and could fly through the sky like a dragon. The Aztecs worshipped him as the god of the sky, the earth, the wind and as a creator god, in addition he was also symbolic of the ocean.

Well, we learn something new everyday, huh? If you got ideas for a better name for his earthly form here, let me know in the comments.

Thank you @greenblueish and @brightgolden for the tag! I did this last year but I couldn’t find it haha, so if I have repeating answers, oh well! Here we go :)

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): 

a-z for sure. It has, and continues to, push me like crazy to not only write an unfamiliar prompt, but also to write quicker than I usually do. (I say as I haven’t updated it in 6 months lmao)

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why):

honestly, this is something I never thought I’d say, but I’m rather proud of everything I’ve done this year. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so even if I’m happy enough to upload, ill always find something that could’ve been changed, but despite that I feel like I grow more and more every year.

8. Share or describe a favourite review you received:

this is my least favourite question because I love each and every comment I get. I don’t have a specific one to shout-out, but I do have many users I look forward to seeing the comments of. Any comments that mention specific parts or quotes of the fic that they loved are always really lovely to read and make me smile so much.

9. A time when writing was really, really hard:

the last two months have been the hardest this year, which is probably clear by the lack of uploads. I started a new antidepressant in October and it’s taken a toll on me quite heavily physically, and therefore also on the creative side of myself. I’m settling into my dose, though, and have started to write consistently again these last few weeks! Not to mention my mental health is steadily increasing for the first time since I was 12 years old, so I definitely think this’ll be a great positive change for my writing.

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

The alpha drop, probably. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be good, seeing as I couldn’t find anything on any omegaverse forums about alpha drops even being a thing, so I was sort of flying blind. Luckily, it seems to be taken well and in the end I rather liked it.

11. A favourite excerpt of your writing:

This is a hard question, especially since I don’t enjoy rereading my fics, as I tend to only find mistakes, but I’m trying to get better at being proud of myself, so I’m going to cheat a little and say the whole introduction up to the boys meeting in night song is my favourite. Writing an au that isn’t my own makes it even harder to be proud of, especially when the source is something as incredibly well done as studio ghibli, but I truly tried my best to not only capture the essence of the original film, but also make it my own, and I’m quite proud of the fic as a whole.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year:

Reckon I could look back and find a thousand different answers to this question, as I feel like I grow as a writer every few months, haha, but probably the biggest growth has been letting go of word count expectations. I used to be quite hard on myself about it, and would have a silly “minimum of 20k or nothing” rule for myself. Though I know I still have a ways to go in terms of writing self-love, allowing myself to write until it feels good, rather than when I’ve reached the “minimum” acceptable word count, has been an incredible weight off my shoulders. Writing shouldn’t be stressing me out, and it took me a long time to realise that, but I’m glad I have.

13. How do you hope to grow next year:

I hope to learn new writing patterns. I feel like there are a handful of parallels in all of my fics, and I’d like to move onto more varying ways of writing.

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

Unsure if this counts, and I’m 90% sure this was my answer last year as well, but it’ll definitely have to be music, usually classical or instrumentals. I listen to it every single time I write, and it is my biggest motivator.

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

I’ll be home tonight, definitely. I feel like there’s a bit of me in every fic I write, but that one was the most this year.

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

Don’t give up a scene even if you think it’s shit. Finish it out, and move on to the next one. You can always go back and fix it later. Keeping the flow of non-block is much more important.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: 

I’m really hoping to finish a-z before 2023 is up, especially because I have another long series planned that I refuse to start before a-z is finished, as I’d hate to lose motivation for it.

Brad discovered through a conversation he had with Mike and Bria that she had a past life, of which he was a part. What happened? They were nervous but he learned he initially met her when she was sixteen years old. She was shooting a music video on the same lot he was shooting Fight Club. They flirted a little. He then kissed her while they were in his trailer. She later found out he was engaged to Jennifer, so she became incredibly upset that he lied to her.

He showed up at her apartment to talk. They ended up sleeping together. He asked for clarification on how old she was. She was sixteen. He hung his head as he thought about that. What else did he do? When she was older, they were drinking at his place. She got drunk, so he put her to bed. While she was sleeping, she became unconscious and went into a coma.

“Bria, I love you. I am ashamed that happened to you. I’m not going to say that it didn’t happen because it doesn’t matter. I just wanted to say I’m sorry.”

“Thank you. You’ve redeemed yourself by being a great neighbor and friend to me and Mama.”

Mike agreed. He admitted he was unsure about him because of what happened before, but he kept an open mind. I was wrong. He apologized to which he forgave him. Was she still escorting? No, she quit. He asked why. Mike was uncomfortable and anxious about her flying around the world to be with random men. That was more than understandable. He would be anxious about that, too.

Did he know about the lawsuit against the company she was working for? No, he didn’t. What happened? One of her customers was going through a divorce. His wife found out he was seeing other girls through the website, so she was including them in her divorce petition. That included her. She and Mike took everything she had, including the nondisclosure agreement she signed with their friend, Brad. He had some experience with legal contracts, so he looked over everything.

He told them that the NDA she signed was BS. She couldn’t be held legally liable if she spoke about the men she had dated. Even so, he highly recommended her to only answer the questions asked of her and to not over-explain. Mike added that she had done a great job of keeping the identities of the men she was dating confidential. He asked her multiple times but she never told him anything.

“I know I’m on the list. Who else”, Brad asked amused.

“Oh my god. Now you guys are going to get me in trouble…”

They laughed. She got up and went over to grab her notebook where she recorded everything. It was the only way she could keep track of everything. Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Gérard C. Louis-Dreyfus, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jude Law and others. Brad mentioned he had recommended her to some of his friends. Mike kind of already knew about some of them since Brad showed him the notebook after finding it at the studio. They were very high-profile men.

She had opinions about all of them. Jude Law was a cad. He was charming, while also being a snake. She got bad vibes from him. Johnny Depp was shy, something she didn’t expect. He was also very polite and he acted like a gentleman to her. Did any of her friends pay to go out with her? No, she wouldn’t let them pay for her.

“It just didn’t seem right to me to have them pay hundreds of dollars for a date.”

“And you’re not selling drugs anymore”, Brad asked.

“Nope, not anymore. Rob confiscated everything I had. I don’t know what he did with it but no, I don’t have anything anymore.”

“Your past life, did you have any addictions?”

“I was an alcoholic for about five years. Bradley Cooper was the one who pushed me into getting sober. He told me that I was better than my alcoholism and that I had so much I could still do with my life.”

At the time, she was a very successful alternative country artist but she wasn’t happy. So, she started drinking which she hid from everyone. Until they started noticing changes in her. Brad knew what it was like to have everything and not be truly happy because he experienced that himself. He didn’t wish addiction on anyone.

How many cats did she have? Mike laughed.

“I think at one point, I had five cats. I know Bon Jovi died from leukemia. Then, I adopted a mother cat and her two kittens. Then, I had another cat.”

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure it was five cats. Six now with Mama.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s the definition of a crazy cat lady”, she joked.

They laughed. She was thinking about getting a kitten for Mama to play with while she was gone during the day. Maybe the same breed. It just depended on what they had at the shelter. What breed was Mama? She was an American Shorthair. They were supposed to be very friendly and adaptable. She joked about having a cat rock band. How would that work? She would adopt cats named Jon Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, and Slash from Guns N Roses. Brad pointed out she needed a drummer.

They could teach Mama how to play the drums. Rob could teach her how to play the drums. Mike laughed. How would he do that? She didn’t know.

The next day, she adopted an eight-week-old American Shorthair kitten named Slash. He had a beautiful black coat. Mama was curious about him when she brought him home. He looked just like her but with a different color coat. Slash meowed because he didn’t know what was going on or where he was. Mama was gentle with him. She assured him he was okay and this was his new family.

He was surrendered to the shelter by his owner, who was moving away and couldn’t take him with her. It was a scary experience because he was in a place he didn’t recognize with different humans coming in and out. Now, he was in a new place with a new human. He relied on Mama for comfort while he got used to his new home. She shared her toys with him and let him sleep beside her. When it was time to eat, they each had a paper plate to eat from.

He was taken to the vet, who gave her advice on how to make him feel more comfortable in her home. It would take a month or two before he would finally be completely comfortable. He was a playful little guy, who was just shy. She started spending one on one time with him in the enclosure. He sniffed her hand before he let her pet him. She told him she loved him.

Mike watched her interact with him. She was incredibly patient and calm while sitting with him. It was amazing to see the progress he was making. He went from not wanting her anywhere near him to letting her pet him. Just because she was gentle and loving. On the third day, he climbed into her lap and purred loudly. Oh my god! She laughed in happiness! Mike could not believe it! She scooped him out and held him. I love you! He loved her too!

“Congratulations, Bria! You earned his trust.”

“Oh my god! I’m so happy right now!”

She kissed his little forehead before putting him down on the floor. He wanted to play, so he went over to his toys. For the first time in his life, he was one hundred percent safe and happy. He had a human who he could trust one hundred percent. She loved him and he loved her.

this past october i went to america for the first time in my life. it was also my first time outside europe, and i dont really know what i was expecting.

what i wasnt expecting was that the whole americana thing would wash over me and almost manipulatively make me fall in love with this country. fall in love with the dull landscapes and the fast food, with the dumb people and the patriotism. i dont know, it was a real eye opening experience for me.

we started off in chicago, which was beautiful, gorgeus early 20th century skyscrapers everywhere, lots of gays, everything one could ask for. we stayed in boystown, which was of course very gay, and something i hadnt quite seen before. i realised that ive grown up with a lot of people tolerating queerness, rather than celebrating it. every time i walked down those rainbow-clad streets i felt like flying.

next we drove to springfield, illinois. the main reason we stopped here was because my mum is a huge fan of frank lloyd wright, and there was apparently a house designed by him in springfield. we stopped for a sandwich and continued our journey.

we drove through some of the most picturesque forest views ive ever seen. since it was october the trees were all a wonderful fiery colour. now i understand why people in america travel to see the trees change colour.

we stopped for the night in hannibal, missouri, a beautiful little halmark town. the morning after we went to the mark twain museum, since he apparently grew up there. we visited a wonderful cafe, with lovely workers and great hot chocolate, wow that was a lot of adjectives.

our last stop was st louis. i loved it there, we saw the gateway arch (which was designed by a finn!!) and went to many thrift shops. here i had the best burger in my life!! it was so good i wish i could have it again.

all in all i liked it a lot, american people are so welcoming and polite, and i learned a lot on this trip.

The cloud gift, huh? "With few exceptions, only few of us have it." Is it because he is respected by The Most Ancient one? Is it because she turned (?) him and he is allowed to drink blood from her? I have so much to learn.

The "You didn't know he had a flying gift?" is such a bullshit, he literally learned it the first night they had sex and Lestat bit him. Why are they telling this rehearsed story? What do they want to achieve? What and why are they fixing the first one is San Francisco?

The real hero of this story.

What also amuses and saddens me: I believe it's basically Lestat's house? He owns it? And he can't enter it? Or, more like, chooses not to 'cause he wants to apologize. Because if he wanted to be That Person, he could've entered the house, whether they like it or not, with "This is my house. I live here. I own it. You're just living in it. Stay or leave, I don't care." The last sentence, of course, varies, 'cause seems like he does care.

The green screen/editing is so bad in this one. And how are they going to deal with an actual coffin outside the house? Non suspicious at all. Is there gonna be any logic behind that or?

You don't? You sure? I want a show about Lestat without Louis. Get yourself together and stop trying to fix your broken marriage that wasn't good even for a second.

I am so curious to learn how many vampires he created over the years and how many hate him and why.

And I think I still prefer the book version of this. Claudia in this is being... way too much. She was plotting against him behind his back. She was pretending to play nice. She was a kitten ready to sleep on his lap. The show version? The show version I definitely dislike. I liked how bold Claudia was in the book with "I'll put you in your coffin, Father. Forever." I think it's absolutely iconic & they should've went with that.

But I guess they ruined that the moment they named him her Uncle, which is very sad. Tbh, I'm not completely sure what they're trying to do here. Different skin colour, different characterization, different stories (stories that I believe don't even exist in the books? I mean, Claudia's story? Are you for real? It ruins the entire concept of what was build in the first book & how Louis and Claudia both traveled to Europe), different naming. But somehow it's supposed to be the same story? IDK how that is supposed to work.

Just yesterday I read an opinion that show!Lestat was showing his love to Claudia through teaching her. Bc of what he didn't have bc of his parents, he tried to break the cycle of that (but obviously failed miserably). Seems like that is close to truth. He immediately started teaching Louis and Claudia, answering the questions. Not always straightforward, but he did it nonetheless.

"...and the sight of him throwing himself into a fire." So I guess being immortal will do that to you? The misery? Nothing satisfies anymore?

when I checked my notifs at breakfast and saw your ask my mind went blank cuz???? suddenly I can't remember any pink floyd song~ but now i'm in a pickle because so SO many songs can be related to them I love them all so much (the songs, pink floyd, larry, everything).

So I made my lil pink floyd shopping list and made choices based on:

how i perceive Louis and Harry (so basically the personas they project as artists/performers who occasionally give away a bit of themselves in interviews)

how well i could see them write and sing something in a similar tone (because my perception of them relies on the music they write mostly lol)

Ok starting with LOUIS:

Echoes, damn. Echoes, tears in my eyes. Echoes is my Pink Floyd Louis anthem.

What we know of Louis depicts someone who went through so many hardships and who took so many blows and it's so unfair, life is so damn ugly and you definitely expect all of those tragedies to show in his writing. And it does, in some kind of way, but Louis' writing, most of the time, is about chasing love and recovery, keeping himself in check and making everything he can better and good, because even though some things are out of his control, he still wants to do the best of what he has. When he feels down, he literally gives to others, whose sweet creatures is this ??

And so I latch on any positive song Pink Floyd has ever made, and there are not many lmao but Echoes is utterly beautiful and even more so regarding their discography: when a band who hates society as much as Pink Floyd does makes a whole 20min piece to celebrate life and human beings, you listen!!

Echoes is clearly inspired by Across the Universe. Well recently I'm very interested in The Beatles' route Louis seems to take (Change being the trigger). The song has this "life is great and nothing's gonna take that away from me". Here are some cute parallels between Echoes and Across the Universe that have to do with the SUN.

So yeah just... Golden boy, literal sunshine, we know the shtick.

More than that, what I love about Louis and what is reflected through his songwriting is how well he perceives the you and me of a relationship. It's like... "I see you and I understand where you come from but let me express how I feel because if I shut down it won't do any good for us". Songs like Defenceless or Too Young feel so considerate yk, like it's part of a conversation and his partner just finished talking and now it's his turn and he expects an answer. He definitely reads as the caretaker, the rock in the relationship.

And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's

"We were only kids just tryna work it out", and what the hell are you supposed to do when you meet the potential love of your life at 18 and also your whole world changed overnight and you have to deal with all of that ? (Right Now vibes)

And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can?

I love it here??? Two people finding each other and growing and learning to be better and navigating in a confusing world but it's beautiful because they're two. Also reminds me of Through the Dark, Strong, "take my hand, I need you and you need me".

This part reminds me of Louis' recurrent theme of growing up, leaving comforting young days behind. Growing into his own person all the while being free, one step at a time.

And some fun little things like:

"You fall upon my waking eyes, Inviting and inciting me to rise" WAKING UP BESIDES YOU I'M A LOADED GUN RJIGRIOGJZRO

"The window in the wall" / "So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky" The speaker's walls falling bit by bit, letting the light in first before opening up completely to the world, reaching out for the other. And that's the final verse of the song, mind if I ugly cry real quick SO BASICALLY would I give everything to see a song like this in an album potentially named "Faith In The Future" ? Yes?? It would be such a strong continuation to a first album centered on introspection and reflection on the past, to songs about overcoming the worst and moving forward, like We Made It and Only The Brave. A song where you just get out of your head for a bit and takes in all the beautiful things life gave you, as a reminder of what you're fighting for. Louis' the literal embodiment of "get up you're fine, wait, just know you being down was valid btw but now we gotta keep movin". Echoes really just... makes me think of him and his strong mind <3

HARRY NOW

The first one that came to my mind is Grantchester Meadows.

It's a very calming and surprisingly lighthearted song, in the sense where I don't think there is any ugly hidden capitalism metaphor or anything like that. It's basically a 7min long tribute to the countryside where some members of the band grew up and still live in.

It's all about nature, and nature is the first thing I think of when it comes to Harry's writing. Nature is a metaphor for his feelings, for his relationship, for his lover, it's a reference to poetry, literature, to his actual upbringing... Nature means so much to Harry!!

There is still some angsty mentions, and I think it's very on brand for Harry. Aquarians will always find some way to be dramatic and that's okay lol

"Icy wind of nights be gone this is not your domain" In the sky a bird is heard to cry

If I Could Fly, Sign of the Times. Is it a plane, no, it's Harry flying in the sky where no one will hear him crying his heart out. But no pain here, no harsh dark winter night in this song, it's summer time and all the good feelings that come with it. (Watermelon Sugar, Adore You...)

In the lazy water meadow I lay me down All around me golden sun flakes covering the ground

Okay Harry, take a nap in the comfort of the water and bath under the GOLDEN SUN. Where you feel so good and safe and loved. That's... literally all of his metaphor game put in two lines lmao.

DIGRESSION this is me getting really dark for a moment, but those two lines reminds me a LOT of a French poem "Le Dormeur du Val" (The Sleeper in the Valley). It's... basically about a very young soldier lying dead in the meadows. The poem's progression is made as such as you're led into thinking he's simply resting, with nature thriving around him, but as it goes on it gets more and more sinister until the final verse "He has two red holes in his right side".

This whole verse of the poem in particular:

A young soldier, his mouth open, his head bare, And the nape of his neck bathing in cool blue watercress, Is sleeping; he is stretched out on the grass, under the skies, Pale in his green bed where the light falls like rain.

Bonus bluegreening. Aaand in my ridiculously long The Wall/HS1 analysis, I interprete Harry as a "kid soldier" fighting in a war that... almost kills him in some way. Running from the bullets, I think I'm losing it, yaddi yadda. So yeah. In some twisted kind of way, I associate this poem to Grantchester Meadows to Harry. oof. END OF THE DIGRESSION.

And a river of green is sliding unseen beneath the trees Laughing as it passes through the endless summer, making for the sea

Bonus bluegreening somewhat. No more crying, he's laughing going through an eternal summer (that belongs to someone's creation) towards the sea where he can be whoever he wants and explores everything with no barriers. (Adore You MV, She...)

The song also uses the calming sounds of nature: birds chirping, water flowing, all that jazz. Harry does include some sound effects in his music as well, though more timidly, but it's still there and I wouldn't be surprised if he took that from Pink Floyd. It also reminds me of the gulls and the sea you get to hear in Flowers In The Window so...bonus points.

SO BASICALLY in Grantchester Meadows, I hear Harry's love of nature and all the sick and twisted spins he adds to it: love and sorrow, birth and death, past and future. I see the river in Holmes Chapel (and Changes), the river that flows into the sea where life is so much bigger and the prospects numerous. Harry and nature, man. If he elopes one day in the fields and releases a record made in the countryside, this is what I expect to hear from him.

His lips press against marble, against something cold and unforgiving, and it’s not until his hand comes up to rest against a sculpted neck that his eyes fly open and he stumbles backwards, nearly falling off the stepladder that he’d stood on.

“Jesus Christ.” He whispers, shaking his head and resisting the urge to brush the back of his hand against his lips, erase evidence that isn’t even visible to the naked eye. Harry stands there, as though nothing’s changed, and of course he does, because he’s a statue.

Y’all, I have ZERO CHILL about the Septimus Heap series.

∙ I’m a sucker for found family, of course, and I don’t know that any other series has done it to quite the bonkers degree that Septimus Heap has. 

Sometimes family is your long-lost biological relations.  And sometimes family is two parents and seven siblings and a Young Army brat they accidentally kidnapped and their batty aunt and their batty aunt’s duck who was a cat and their mom’s other duck who was never a cat and an in-law with too many ribbons and their Young Army brat’s BFF and a smelly dragon and the smelly dragon’s boat-mom and the youngest sibling’s biological dad and the youngest sibling’s biological dad’s wife (who is also the Young Army brat’s second mom) and at least 1.5 trees.  And that’s before we get into the extended Heap family and start counting wolverines and witches and apprentices and Gringes and alchemists and Message Rats and scribes.

Like, somehow having a protagonist who (by default) has six older brothers and six uncles wasn’t enough family for Angie Sage, and she had to go and add a shitton more.  Which is amazing, because there are approximately twelve million characters in that series (six million of whom are Heaps) and I love every single one of them.

∙ If you don’t ship 821, you’re reading a different series from me.

821 (409 + 412) is my first OTP and I’ll ship it till I die. It shows the best side of both boys when they’re at their worst.  I love all the details that gradually emerge through the series about Boy 412 being the single most incompetent Young Army cadet in the history of the army (because of course Sep’s a mega-nerd who hates the outdoors) and Boy 409 basically carrying him through the do-or-die exercises to overcompensate for the dumbassery of his best friend (because of course Marwick is a softie at heart and no one else will talk with him about spaceships).  I’m just sayin, it’s a near-miracle that 412 made it six whole months without 409 before mostly-dying in a snowbank.

Plus, I love their weird messy dynamic as they become young adults together.  Syren especially hinges on how they effortlessly get each other, even when one or the other is behaving irrationally.  There’s such great contrast in their utter confidence in each other’s love, in contrast to neither one knowing quite what to do with his biological family.

∙ There is a trick to having screwball comedy and genuine, respectful, wrenching tragedy in the same work.  Angie Sage has it, K.A. Applegate has it, Louis Sachar has it, and few other authors do.

∙ Marcia.  Fucking.  Overstrand.

I cannot ever, ever get enough of the mentee-mentorship between Marcia and Sep.  I love how they’re both typically bad at getting along with other people — Marcia’s aloof and snobby, Sep’s awkward and off-putting — but then they meet each other and instantaneously start getting along because they’re the only two people in the universe who care as much as they do about magic.  And so they’re best friends in a matter of days, lifelong platonic soulmates in a matter of months.  To the point where they tend to forget to sleep because they want to do more magic.  To the point where it’s more than a little awkward how much closer Sep is with his magic-mom than his actual parents.  And we get why they like each other so much, because the books do an amazing job of showing that.

Also, can we talk about how fucking good Marcia is at navigating around Sep’s Odd Trauma Legacy Habits?  It’s her being quietly appalled but also willing to enable his insistence on wearing one specific brand of military boots.  It’s her refusal to accept “I’m scared” as an excuse but also making sure he knows how to feel safe while flying or using Darke.  It’s elaborate rituals around removing the bugs from the library instead of killing them.  It’s making sure the kid who hoards cabbage sandwiches can have an infinite supply of non-perishable food.  It’s supporting all the ways that he’s weirdly nostalgic for his godawful childhood, with the Young Army stew supplies and firestarter kits.  It’s her dealing with Sep’s “when in doubt, refuse to speak for months on end” default strategy through note-writing and journal-keeping.

∙ God DAMN do I love that Jenna’s journey as a character is all about her learning that the “don’t treat me like a princess... unless I happen to need something from someone” strategy is about her comfort, and that she can’t keep doing that if she ever wants to be a halfway responsible queen.  Way too often, stories imply that ““don’t call me ‘your highness’” is unironically a Good Thing in all situations at all times.

Anyway, I’ll stop screaming in joy now, because this is an Animorphs blog.
