Vigilante

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Vigilante (2023, South Korea)
Director: Choi Jeong Yeol
Writer: Lee Min Seob (based on the webtoon by CRG & Kim Kyu Sam)
Mini-review:
I love shows and movies that focus on the moral conflicts of vigilantism. It's always a fascinating topic, and Vigilante delves deep into it. I feel like some people won't be happy with this drama's take, though, cause there are points were it pretty much justifies the main character's actions. However, that's what makes him even more interesting, and Nam Joo Hyuk gives a pretty solid performance in the darkest role of his career (special mention to his speech in episode 6). That being said, the show is so short that it barely has time to develop the characters and their connections. I don't know who decided to make only 8 x 40-45 minute episodes, but it wasn't a good idea. The whole thing feels rather rushed, and it doesn't take the necessary time to properly set all its stakes. It's definitely enjoyable, but it would have been even better as full-length drama.

Myung Hee's Marriage Vow
I, Kim Myeong Hee, refuse to be buried alive with Hwang Hee Tae. Lord, if something unexpected happens and we have to let go of each other's hands, please don't let the sorrow overwhelm the lives of those left behind. Even if the tears we shed alone fill up to our chins, please don't let us drown and give us the power and courage to swim safely throughout this life.

Rambling About a Show (08/13/2022)
Tumblr media
⚠️SPOILER!?⚠️
This is another drama I started because I saw an edit on tiktok that piqued my interest. (First time that happened was a Gwi edit, The Scholar Who Walks the Night). Anyhoo, I enjoyed the storyline, the action, the romance, and the drama. I started this on Wednesday (08/10/2022) and finished it today. Here's my rambling.
So, before Court Lady Noh Ok-nam mentioned anything about chaos and it's revealed a version of Jeong Tae eul exists in Lee Gon's universe. I kept questioning if her being in the Kingdom of Corea creates some sort of paradox or something. Same with when Lee Gon is in her universe. Also, later on when Jeong Tae Eul ask Na-ri what she would do if she had met another version of herself. Na-ri's response is shocking but also she's got a point. However, that does not mean I condone in murder. It just means I agree with the whole two versions of one person shouldn't coexist in the same universe, because it messes with the balance of everything.
There were so many plot twists. My favorite is when it's revealed that Lee Gon's older self is the one who saved his younger self on the night of the treason. I had figured it was either Jo Yeong or Luna.
Lee Jung-jin did an amazing job portraying Lee Lim, one of the villains that I couldn't stand. I think Jung Eun-chae also did a fantastic job as Minister Goo. The funny thing is, I instantly didn't like Minister Goo when she first appeared. As I continued on, she showed that I had a good reason not to like her. She is power hunger, manipulative, rude, and wants to be in control. Lee Lim, he just wanted power and eternity, still pretty evil. Also can't forget that he killed his brother and attempted to murder his nephew, Lee Gon. So, both characters are pretty evil and unsettling.
I got emotional when Lee Gon figured everything out towards the end, and also figured out he might not be able to return to Jeong Tae Eul. There was also a possibility that Jeong Tae Eul may not have memories of Lee Gon. Which honestly broke my heart. Also when Jo Eun seob and Jo Yeong said goodbye, that scene made me emotional.
I wanted to talk about the cinematography towards the end of episode 11 and into episode 12. I personally felt that him and his guards riding into the scene on horseback made it all the more powerful and emotional. Sure, they could have pulled up in their royal vehicles, but it wouldn't have as much of impact as the horses. That's just my personally opinion. It also looked like an extremely cool shot. Gotta hand it to the entire crew and actors for producing such a gorgeous and impactful scene. Another powerful scene I was mesmerized by was when Lee Gon and Jo Yeong went back to the night of the treason togethr. Their entrance there was amazing.
I recognized several of the actors from other dramas I have watched. Kim Yong-ji (Na-ri), first character I saw her portray was Yuri in Tale iof the Nine-Tailed. Kim Go-eun (Jeong Tae eul), first character I saw her portray was Ji Eun-tak in Goblin/Guardian The Lonely and Great God. Lee Min-ho (Lee Gon), first character I saw him portray was Goo Jun-pyo in Boys Over Flowers (currently watching that whenever I visit my bestie). Jeon Moo-song (Prince Buyeong/Lee Jong-in), first character I saw him portray was Veteran Lee Young-cheon in episode 6 of Tomorrow.
I should also recognize Kim Young-ok (Court Lady Noh Ok-nam) from an episode of Tomorrow, but I don't. 😳 I saw Kang Ki-doong (Secretary Kim) in Prison Playbook as Prison Officer Song. I was wondering why Kim Kyung-nam (Shin-jae) seemed familiar but couldn't place his face until now. He portrayed Lee Joon-dol in Prison Playbook. That character is vastly different from Shin-jae, hence why I couldn't pin point where I've seen him before. I admit I have seen The Divine Fury, Woo Do-hwan (Jo Yeon) portrayed Ji-sin in that film, but it's been awhile since I've seen that film so I forgot about it. 😫
I admit there is so much I love about this drama. But as usually I'm only rambling about everything that stuck out the most to me. This was definitely worth the watch.

Dashboard Usability
I found a really interesting paper on the development of a dashboard for an emergency room in Seoul. The researchers designed the dashboard iteratively (over several rounds) then tested its usability. The paper is:
A Real-Time Autonomous Dashboard for the Emergency Department: 5-Year Case Study By: Junsang Yoo, Kwang Yul Jung, Taerim Kim, Taerim Lee, Sung Yeon Hwang, Hee Yoon, Tae Gun Shin, Min Seob Sim, Ik Joon Jo, Hansol Paeng, Jong Soo Choi, Won Chul Cha https://mhealth.jmir.org/2018/11/e10666
There were 2 subprojects: a dashboard for providers and a dashboard for patients and families. The dashboards fell under a Happiness project at the institution (called "Happinovation" - Happy innovation) that sought to enhance patient and provider happiness through process and hardware innovations.
There were three dashboard principles: (1) Anytime, Anywhere, at a Glance, (2) Minimal Interruption to Workflow, and (3) Protect Patient Privacy. And, there were three design principles: (1) Geographical Layout, (2) Patient-Level Alert, and (3) Real-Time Summary Data.
The researchers used the System Usability Scale (SUS) to obtain and measure participants' views on the usability of the dashboard. The SUS score was a high 67.6 points.
There was a lot of data to include in the dashboards so they were a little crowded/busy. I personally felt that they were too dark, but the dark color made the numbers pop (more visible).

As much as you’ve been waiting, let’s enjoy the ever more sparkling summer together. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! "You make me sparkle, I'll be your sparkle" 서로를 비춰주는 별하랑과 저의 관계 같아요~ 오래 기다려 주신 만큼 더욱더 반짝반짝한 여름 함께 보내요 진심으로 늘 고맙습니다! This fetching piece features sound like a refreshing soda pop, with its identity of hyper-vibe on top of a fast BPM around 160. Like the first sip of an ice cold drink on a hot summer day, the song expresses the clear and cool feeling of a cold and tangy pop. The fast mood could easily seem as light but by capturing the fast mood with Chung Ha’s strong voice, this cool and sparkle track was completed. The arpeggio of the analog synthesizer achieves harmony with the retro but trendy drumline, and by adding in the electric guitar, the chorus also realizes a tough but witty rich sound. And Chung Ha’s chameleonic changes in emotions corresponding with the lyrics can be a key point of this song. Like the lyrics, “You make me sparkle”, “I’ll be your sparkle”, Chung Ha’s ‘Sparkling’ will glitter up our summer moments. When the Weather is Fine - KDrama
~[Bookstore Journal]
~A private post of Good Night Club Blog
I choose to close my 2021 chapter by sharing the KDrama that echoed lessons that were really for me. The KDrama is really calming to watch. And you guess it right, it is boring. I slept well many times after watching this. Hahaha!
The story focuses on cellist Mok Hae-won (Park Min-young) who decided to spend her hiatus in Gangwon Province where her auntie Shim Myeong-joo (Jin Hee-kyung) is living. There, she met again her schoolmate Im Eun-seob (Seo Kang-Joon) who had feelings for her since then.
The drama showcase how peaceful life is in the province where everyone knows each other and helps each other. Since the two protagonists are having feelings for each other, they are slowly helping each other heal the wound they have in their hearts. What the tearjerker for me is to know the tragic story of Myeong-joo who cannot let go of her past and living the present seems a hell before her true long-awaited death. I feel for her since I believe her life is the most realistic where you really think, “bakit nga ba di tayo paborito ng tadhana?”, [whey fate does not like us?] that you decided not to pursue happiness anymore. In the end, Myeong-joo decided to let go of the wrecking ball-like weight in her heart and lowkey started a new life.
From this drama, I learned not to give up on happiness even though there might be unfortunate events that would happen to us. That happiness is not easy to find alone, and even though you have someone, you still need to continue the conquest to find and keep this happiness in your heart because it would not stay with you that easily. We all deserve happiness. I tell you, no one else can take that happiness from you.
There is a close friend of mine who makes sure he will give me a letter whenever I am present in the semestral retreat, in the last retreat I attended, he said to me that he believes in me. In that alone, I believe and learned, everyone can have happiness. And it is you who can find and keep that. I may say in other words, only you,... who can define that. :)
Tumblr media
P.S. What I also like about the Drama is it is full of poems, books, instrumental music, and sceneries. And the best poem for me is in the last 10 minutes of Episode 16. :D

Afterword
Myeong Seung Ah
While she prides herself in being one of the few people in the know concerning the recent events in the palace between Pyeha, his unnamed guest, and Captain Jo, Seung Ah couldn’t help herself in sending a condolence card and care basket to the captain following the rumors of Pyeha taking his guest as his queen and the “break-up” of GonJo couple. Of course she doesn’t sign her real name because Seung Ah isn’t sure she could look Captain Jo in the eyes if he ever found out she shipped him and Pyeha. And while she knows it is a real possibility that he might already be aware of that fact, considering his office performed her background check before she was hired, Seung Ah would rather remain ignorant on what Captain Jo might or might not know about her pseudonym and the world she created online.  Besides, she has seen some of the stolen wistful glances he and Pyeha have given each other when they think the other person isn’t looking. Sometimes, Seung Ah isn’t sure how much of what she has written is fiction and how much is fact.
Jo Eun Seob
It is during the second day of Eun Seob’s hospital stay that the care baskets, flowers, and Get-Well cards start rolling in. In Yeong and Mi Reuk had delivered them to his room, all the while reassuring him that all packages had already been carefully checked for and none of the food in the care baskets contained any poison.  In fact, their screening is the reason why he is only starting to get his care packages, even though most of them have already started arriving the day before, shares In Yeong. Apparently, there are still many more packages and cards back at their office in the Palace. Eun Seob is sure he stood frozen in shock at the knowledge of how popular and well-loved his doppelganger is by the people of Corea for longer than he thought, until he catches the expecting look on In Yeong’s and Mi Reuk’s faces. Channeling Yeong and keeping his voice as low as he could, he tells his fellow Royal Guards there is no need to bring anymore of his packages to his room since he isn’t planning on staying in the hospital for much longer. (Eun Seob is also secretly sure he has already stayed much longer than Yeong would have if the man had been the one who was injured.)
After In Yeong and Mi Reuk leave, Eun Seob helps himself to one of the chocolate boxes for “Jo Yeong.” He figures since he is the one who is actually in the hospital with a bullet wound, the care baskets are as much his as they are Yeong’s. Eun Seob flips through some of the cards included and of course there are the expected messages of “Get Well Soon,” but there are a few that also expressed sympathy for “his break-up” that have Eun Seob scratching his head in wonder and confusion.  He’s pretty sure in one of their conversations before the switcheroo, Yeong had said he wasn’t seeing anyone, yet these cards say otherwise. Eun Seob has a half a mind to save these cards to tease his doppelganger when he sees the man again when the guard outside his door announces the arrival of Pyeha. All thoughts of Yeong and the cards are pushed from his mind as Eun Seob cheerfully leaps into Tae Eul’s arms when Eun Seob sees her next to Gon.
Lee Gon
Gon smiles as he watches the interactions between Eun Seob and Tae Eul.  He knows Eun Seob must be missing his friends and his world terribly, just as he misses his Yeong.  While Eun Seob is a great friend and he has Yeong’s face, he isn’t Yeong, his Yeong who has been by his side since he was eight and Yeong was four.  As he lets Eun Seob and Tae Eul catch up with each other, Gon takes in all the flowers, care baskets, and cards in the room, sent to “Jo Yeong.”  A warm feeling fills his heart knowing how well-loved Yeong is by their people.
Just as Gon is about to turn back to Eun Seob and Tae Eul, a message from a nearby card catches his eyes. Aside from the expected “Get Well Soon” message, it also expresses sympathy for Yeong’s recent break-up. That message stops Gon short.  He didn’t realize Yeong was seeing anyone.  An irritating and uncomfortable feeling bubbles in his chest at the thought. Gon doesn’t realize he is scowling until Eun Seob asks him what was wrong. He quickly dismisses the other’s question before joining him on the couch with Tae Eul to plan out their next move. In the back of his mind though, Gon fully intends on interrogating Yeong about the message on card the next time they see each other.
Of course, when Gon is finally sitting across from Yeong in the Republic of Korea, his mission to interrogate his oldest friend about the man’s hidden relationship and the idiot who would even think about breaking up with Yeong is the furthest thing from Gon’s mind. He only wants to know how Yeong is doing, if he is well, and if anything had happened to him while Gon was away. He takes in the sight of his dearest friend across from him, a Yeong who looks softer somehow and less of the stoic Captain Jo persona usually presented to the public, and if someone was to say that he was a bit teary eyed during his reunion with Yeong, well, Gon would not deny it.
Jo Yeong
Yeong freezes for a moment as he takes in the pile of cards and the flowers on his desk when he stops by his office after his return from the Republic. He is expecting them of course. After all, this isn’t the first time Jo Yeong was injured while protecting Pyeha, and Eun Seob did mention them during their good-byes. What Yeong is not expecting, however, is the sheer volume of it.  He is not sure what makes this occasion different from any of the other times he was injured in the line of duty.  Nonetheless, he is grateful for his people’s affection.  Yeong allows himself a small smile before he is called away by Pyeha.
After Yeong and Pyeha return from their trip to the past, the flowers and cards from an event of another reality are no longer on his desk, but the warmth of the love they represent remains in his heart. While Yeong is less alone in this timeline, surrounded by his parents again and twin siblings of his own, whenever he does feel lonely, he remembers that the people of his kingdom love him as much as he loves them.  ...And, Yeong smiles as he watches Pyeha lost in thoughts in front of his blackboards covered with mathematical equations, and Pyeha is happy, and that is enough.
