the lee scorseby “you love her but thats not enough is it” line is also like at the very heart of the story. the fact that mrs coulter loves lyra doesnt stop her from treating her cruelly and it doesn’t stop lyra from rejecting her. the fact that lee loves lyra doesn’t stop him from dying and leaving her. the fact that lyra loves pan doesnt stop their separation. the fact that john parry loves his wife and his son doesnt stop him from leaving them and it doesn’t bring him back. the fact that will and lyra love one another doesnt stop them from being torn apart. love never conquers loss in hdm the way it usually does especially in kids media and thats what makes the ending so jolting and devastating because you keep believing until the last second before will closes the window that there's going to be a happy ending, because how could there not be, they're in love…. but then they lose each other anyway

Reasons you should read His Dark Materials.
-It's a good mix between low and high fantasy. Yes, there are magical aspects but a lot of the "magic" is actually just science. The real magic is done by witches and they are the only ones who truly use magic.
-Every single character is morally grey there is not a single person shown to be pure and good and that's amazing. All the human characters are truly human and I love it.
-The non-human characters (In particular Serafina Pekkala and Iorek Byrnson) have an honest fear of being human as that would cause them to lose what makes them themselves. They have a fear but also a respect (but not excitement) of the change coming. Neither want to pick a side but when they do it is based on their connections to humans.
-The entire story is about love of all kinds. Yes, romantic love, but also familial love (both actual family and found family, there's a very nice plotline with Lee Scorseby literally seeing Lyra as the daughter he never had) as well as platonic love.
-It embraces the concept of multiple worlds so well
-Matter that loves matter is the best concept ever! I love Dust it's such an interesting concept, and the fact there are beings that are made of it with thoughts and feelings (I mean Balthamos has one of the most heartbreaking scenes to me and he's always been an angel)
-Just because something isn't human doesn't mean they aren't people, and it's shown twice both with the armoured bears and the Zalif.
-Everyone can get behind having an animal that is a literal part of your soul that comforts you and helps you and you both love each other unconditionally

I enjoy that, while introducing @chaosqueer and @renthony to His Dark Materials, they too watched Lee Scorseby and Iorek Byrnison interact and immediately diagnosed them as divorced.

HE DOESN'T LIKE being back in texas. even if he avoids the southern regions where the scorseby homestead once stood, he feels as though he'll turn his back & find a bullet in it as penance for something his father did & never paid for. its a foolish, childish fear, yet he finds himself sticking to alleyways & keeping his hat firmly tucked over his face.
he's here for a job, then he's leaving. probably for new denmark or new france. anywhere but here. he can't leave until the job is done, however, & he finds himself out of cigarettes & smoke leaf for his pipe to calm his nerves.
a less desirable looking man passes, & lee figures its safe to assume he'd be the kind of creature to have similar bad habits.
" you got a smoke, friend? " he asks, tilting his hat up ever so slightly.

His Dark Materials: The Abyss (3x06)
Man, I got super weepy with this one.
Cons:
I felt like of all the emotional gut-punches in this episode, the one that wasn't as effective for me was Will and his dad. I think this goes back to an error in judgment from the second season. See, in the books, Will and Jopari never get to have a conversation as father and son while they're both alive. This is the first time, in the land of the dead, that they're getting to talk. But here in the show, they got to have a big chat and a slow death scene at the end of season two, so this additional scene just didn't really add all that much? I mean, don't get me wrong, always glad to see Andrew Scott, but other than his hint about how Will belongs in his own world, and instructions on finding his daemon, it felt devoid of the emotion I was wanting to feel.
I should say an overall weak point of the season has been the Gallivespians. I think they might be kind of weak points in the books too, but I remember feeling a deeper sense of connection to them such that when there were moments of tension and action, or even tragedy, it mattered to me. In the show, if you replaced all the Gallivespian characters with literal drone cameras that flitted around after the human characters, I'm not sure it would make any real difference.
I'll also say that while I liked the harpy moment, I think my knowledge of the scene in the books was doing a lot of heavy lifting. The whole idea of telling the harpies stories is pretty trite, but in the books it's more about feeding them the truth, and them feeding on something freely given rather than just forcing something out of the dead souls. There was a bit of nuance flattening here that was too bad, because otherwise I felt the episode did a pretty good job with the land of the dead stuff, as did the last one.
Pros:
But, okay, look. I did some crying with this one. First you've got Marisa, who continues to be the real highlight of the show (some might argue she's taking screen time away from Lyra, actually, and while I don't disagree with that argument, I'm choosing to focus on what I like about what we see, not just lamenting what we don't.) The cold, detached way she plays her grief, when she comes to tell Asriel that their daughter is dead... oof. And then of course the scene with her daemon that I'm sure is going to be a standout for a lot of people. The extended metaphor of self-harm being played out with her character is honestly really well-executed in my opinion, and this culminating moment where she offers an apology to her daemon, and thus extends herself some grace, was quite lovely.
Obviously my pre-existing affection for Lin Manuel-Miranda makes it easy for me to love Lee Scorseby here, but my god do I really love Lee Scorseby. Such a sweet pure love he has for Lyra, and the way he sees what Will and Lyra are to each other, tells them to look out for each other... and then he's gonna go be with his Hester... I cry... I don't care about Roger quite as much but I thought he and Lyra's goodbye was also quite touching, just on the strength of the actors' performances.
Like I said, the whole "tell them stories" moment didn't 100% land for me, but I did think the harpy design was cool, and Lyra nearly dying was harrowing: loved seeing Will lose his shit when he thought she was about to die. That's the good stuff right there.
Meanwhile with Mary Malone, the buildup to her relevance is finally going to be revealed, as we see Lyra and Will emerge into the world where she's been staying with the mulefa. She has stuff to tell them about Dust, but more importantly she has stuff to tell them about... feelings. All will be clear in time.
I can't believe that in a week I'll be done with this show! In preparation for my final thoughts, I'll say that while this show certainly can't match the artistry and brilliance of the books, I find myself greatly enjoying getting to see some of the moments I remember play out in this form.

"this would go remarkably faster if you'd stop fidgeting." evelyn remarks, tugging lightly at the bowtie around lee's neck as she ties it with practiced ease; she'd lost track how many times she'd done this for her brother jonathan at one time or another. tonight feels different though, and there's a nervousness bubbling in her stomach she can't place. it's been some time since she's been to any formal event and the way that lee reacts, she wonders if he ever has been at all.
Tumblr media
satisfied as she ties it and adjusted the bow into perfection, evelyn steps back to give him a critical eye. for herself, she's wearing an evening dress of deep gold with delicate beading, hair left loose across bare shoulders. a far cry from her favored trousers and shirts that make travel and digging in the sand a bit easier - but if she wants information about the artifact she's seeking, well, sometimes it requires a bit of fancy dress.
"you don't clean up half bad, mr. scorseby. one would have a hard time believing you're any sort of scoundrel."

Blue eyes dropped to where the nape of Lee's neck and and a hint of his chest is exposed where his buttons are undone. Serafina reaches out to touch the exposed skin, her fingertips light as a feather as she traces them across his chest. His hair gleamed faintly wet in the sunlight and she had a feeling what she had caught him doing.
"Did I catch you dressing after washing up, Mr. Scorseby?" She asked, her voice light, as she dropped her hand back to her side. "My apologies."

I can't really express how much I Did Not Like what they did with lee scorseby in the bbc adaptation. im never gonna understand why they made the laconic and honest aeronaut whose most defining characteristic is a hatred of fighting into a hotheaded pickpocket who constantly runs his mouth and seems to revel in scrapping

i’m trying to give the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials another chance despite how bewildering and bad i find 80% of the casting choices and direction because i really do just love the story and world but Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scorseby is really truly testing me.......
