Some Further Thoughts: TOY STORY 5, FROZEN III, ZOOTOPIA 2
Tumblr media
The dust has settled for a bit…
These are some theories on who I think will be in charge of the three animated movie sequels announced by The Walt Disney Company the other day, because that’s always a concern of sorts for me when it comes to these movies… And also when they could possibly be released…
Why don’t we get the big one out of the way? That’s right… TOY STORY 5…
The announcement of TOY STORY 5 was unusual in that it didn’t give us any idea who is spearheading it. Now, TOY STORY 4 was similarly announced during an earnings call in October of 2014. It was the first official announcement of the movie’s existence following years of rumors coming from dubious sources… And on that day, we learned right away that it had a director (John Lasseter, who stepped down as director in mid-2017 prior to his prolonged ouster from the Disney company), two writers (Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who left around that time as well), and was going to be a love story… But during that February earnings call, Bob Iger only stated that it was in the works, along with the two Disney Animation sequel films FROZEN III and ZOOTOPIA 2. No info on those, either… Just, they exist… It wasn’t too dissimilar to the March 2014 shareholder earnings call that officially confirmed that CARS 3 and INCREDIBLES 2 were in the works. Info was sparse on both…
In my previous post on the TOY STORY 5 announcement, I thought of who was part of the main crew of all four of the movies. Lasseter’s been out of Disney altogether since mid-2018, Pete Docter never directed a TOY STORY movie and is currently the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar, Andrew Stanton has been off directing live-action stuff and trying to get live-action features off the ground elsewhere, Lee Unkrich retired from the business entirely, and Josh Cooley is presumably still directing an animated TRANSFORMERS movie for Paramount… I’d imagine Docter and Stanton will at least write or contribute story material to the fifth TOY STORY, but I don’t see them being involved in other levels of the production. Does Unkrich un-retire (he’s not particularly old) and write, possibly even direct? Not sure. Perhaps another promising upstart director gets this one, much like how Josh Cooley got the TOY STORY 4 gig after years of story artist/supervisor work dating back to CARS. But who… Is the question. All the directors confirmed to make new Pixar features - Brian Fee, Kristen Lester, Rosana Sullivan, Aphton Corbin, Enrico Casarosa, and Domee Shi - are working on original stories… Maybe a short film director who has yet to get a gig - such as Brian Larsen or Bobby Rubio - will be director. Maybe someone I’ve never heard of before or even considered… After all, no one outside the walls of the studio knew that Enrico Casarosa had an original film in the works (LUCA), or that Adrian Molina was tackling a movie of his own after COCO (ELIO), or that Kelsey Mann was set to direct something, let alone an INSIDE OUT sequel. There’s a lot they don’t say, as much as they do say…
Release… Pixar currently has these dates locked for releases, post-INSIDE OUT 2:
06/13/2025 03/06/2026 06/19/2026
I’m thinking… Should production go smoothly, and not go through multiple writer changes like TOY STORY 4 did, it gets the June 2026 slot. That puts it… Seven years after TOY STORY 4. When TOY STORY 4 was announced, it was slated for summer 2017… That would’ve been seven years after TOY STORY 3, but again, those delays pushed it to summer 2019. TOY STORY 3, by contrast, took four years to come together. Development began following Disney’s acquisition of Pixar in early 2006 (erasing the old anti-sequel terms of the original contract between the two companies), was at first slated for summer 2009, but was released in summer 2010. TOY STORY 2 debuted four years after the first TOY STORY… Seven years is long, both TOY STORY 3 and TOY STORY 4 took what seemed like eons to come out.
As for those other release dates? I think those go to originals, of course. They’re the only other Pixar films we know about, and more originals is a good thing.
Now while we know what Pixar are releasing in 2024, original ELIO and sequel INSIDE OUT 2… We know next to nothing about what Walt Disney Animation Studios has on the horizon for after WISH’s holiday 2023 bow… And WISH wasn’t known to the public until this past autumn… Barely a year away from release. Outside of the two recently-announced sequels? Nothing. No hints on anything that’s cooking. We’ve known for a while - read: since November 2019 - that filmmakers Josie Trinidad, Suzi Yoonessi, and Marc Smith had original movies in production. If those are still a priority, then I’d imagine we’d be hearing about them soon. Walt Disney Animation Studios runs differently from Pixar now, what with Jennifer Lee as Chief Creative Officer, not how John Lasseter used to oversee both WDAS and Pixar… Don Hall, for example, was curiously whisked off of his STRANGE WORLD to take over RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON from its previous directors, ditto Carlos Lopez Estrada. Estrada had an original of his own in the works at the time, until he was assigned to RAYA. He left Disney altogether after that, meaning that his original is either dead (reportedly titled FOSTER, which shared the name with a cancelled Blue Sky musical) or it was given to another director. Hall later resumed STRANGE WORLD and the movie debuted nearly two years after RAYA. (Worth noting, RAYA was originally supposed to be a fall 2020 release, with ENCANTO following fall 2021, and then STRANGE WORLD fall 2022.)
So, which movie bows first? And when?
FROZEN III was inevitable given the billion dollar success of both movies, individually. FROZEN II came out six years after the first one, in fact it wasn’t announced that it existed until a year and a half after the first FROZEN came out. FROZEN II is now 3 1/2 years old, so they took a while to even confirm that this movie exists. Do Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee return to direct? Definitely no on the latter, as Lee is busy running the studio. Chris Buck is director of WISH, so if Buck’s directing, it won’t be out for a little while then. If neither are directing, and they gave it to someone else (maybe one of the directors of the half-hour OLAF’S FROZEN ADVENTURE), then it could come sooner than later… Again, with such little information, it is hard to gauge.
Ditto ZOOTOPIA 2. Byron Howard directed the first film alongside Rich Moore, the latter left Disney a while ago. Howard, and ZOOTOPIA co-director Jared Bush, took on ENCANTO afterwards. Is Howard returning? Or is he pursuing another original project? Jared Bush is involved in ZOOTOPIA 2, and it’s possibly he could direct, or he has an original lined up for himself as well. I’d imagine they’d both at least write it or contribute story material. Josie Trinidad has an original movie lined up, but given her story work on the first ZOOTOPIA and that she directed most of ZOOTOPIA+. Trent Correy, who also directed on ZOOTOPIA+ and directed the Short Circuit short DROP, could be the director, too. Or he has an original lined up…
Release dates? Well, here is Walt Disney Animation Studio’s post-WISH slate so far…
11/20/2024 11/26/2025 11/25/2026
While Pixar has smoothly moved into doing two features every other year, WDAS still does one movie a year… And two sequels being on the boards makes thing a little complicated for the originals. Do we semi-repeat 2018-2019, where we went a whole four years without a new not-sequel Disney animated movie? Or does WDAS wrangle another movie into a doable slot?
Pixar, as said before, releases two movies in both 2024 and 2026… 2025, just one… Who’s to say Disney can’t take one of their placeholder dates for a “live-action” movie and gave it to a WDAS movie? Like, I can imagine one of those two sequels - likely ZOOTOPIA 2, since FROZEN is always more of a wintery sort of thing for obvious reasons - taking such a date… Say, March 2025? That’s the earliest feasible date, though…
FROZEN III, if it were truly coming out next year, than they’ve kept a hell of a tight lip on it… I don’t think it’ll be next year’s WDAS movie, nor ZOOTOPIA 2…
Earliest I can see either is sometime in 2025. It’s harder to gauge because originals exist, and WDAS only does one a year as of now. Again, that could change. They could surprise and say that they’re doing two in 2025 or so, and one of those two is a sequel.
As I said in the previous post on this matter… Why don’t they double up their efforts so they can get more originals out without having sequels pushing them back? In a way that doesn't put pressure on the crews, and doesn't crunch anyone... I think it can be done: That Vancouver studio they recently opened... Can that be upped the same way the defunct Orlando studio was? The Orlando unit helped on features like THE LION KING, and then whole features were made in-house there starting with MULAN. By the early 2000s, Disney Feature was able to get two features out every few years because of this. Both units seemed to work well in delivering movies without much strain. It only went kablooey because of outside circumstances, but look at Pixar. They’re doing two a year just fine despite outside hardships (COVID-19, LIGHTYEAR flopping at the box office), DreamWorks is doing that just fine, too. WDAS, from my outside perspective, could possibly get two movies out in 2025. An original and a sequel - be it ZOOTOPIA 2 or FROZEN III - and make it through unscathed.
As for what makes it first out of the two WDAS sequels? I'm definitely leaning on ZOO2PIA here. The first film will be *ten years old* in 2026, and ZOOTOPIA+ recently debuted on Disney+, so I'd imagine that one arriving sooner than latter.
Who knows, but I could see this happening…
11/20/2024 - ORIGINAL WDAS (possibly Josie Trinidad's film?)
03/07/2025 - ZOOTOPIA 2
06/13/2025 - ORIGINAL PIXAR (possibly Brian Fee’s film? He said he was writing/directing an original way back in July 2017)
11/26/2025 - ORIGINAL WDAS (possibly Suzi Yoonessi's film?)
03/06/2026 - ORIGINAL PIXAR (possibly Kristin Lester’s film? Her original movie was confirmed to exist in 2018)
06/19/2026 - TOY STORY 5
11/25/2026 - FROZEN III
2027 - ORIGINAL PIXAR (possibly Rosana Sullivan's film?)
2027 - ORIGINAL WDAS (possibly Marc Smith's film?)
This might all look silly by 2026 anyways, so… Why the heck not?

Drama Rating: 9/10
The story revolves around the life of Sung Shi Won, a female high school student and a full time fan girl of a boyband called H.O.T. She is surrounded by five close friends and they share experiences of being an adolescent during the 90’s and eventually crossover to being adults.
The timeline would go back and forth between 1997, during their high school days and 2012, the present day in which they had a high school reunion dinner. A couple will announce that they’re getting married and clues will be given episode by episode.
This is one of the dramas that really got to me. 1997 was a year where I was on my hype on boy bands as well. The drama brought me back to the times where VHS was such a vital home gadget so as not to miss my favorite drama, cassette tapes were a fad and friendship were in full bloom. Reply 1997 was a drama which conveyed a part of my past and that’s why it probably hit me right on spot. It gave me such nostalgic feelings that I was left laughing and crying at the same time when the drama ended.
This drama… I love, for so many reasons.
The story line was very much unique from all the drama’s I have watched. It did have a full on Rom-Com taste in it (like all the usual Rom-Com Kdrama), but the funny… the funny never stops in every episode, even though I was already tearfully crying out because of a heart breaking scene or because of a heart warming moment; the comedy never stops. Cliches were still used but I should say the writers have done that in a very creative way. I like the fact that they have used a bunch of odd personalities and put them together in a kind of relationship that would bond them as friends for life, then add their family members into it… TADA! You get a really great story to tell. Since all of these characters are peculiar, even from a deep to shallow background of each person, I never got tired of watching each one’s side of the story. That’s how they make the fun come out.
For the main characters, I couldn’t really pick my favorite. Even though we have the “very main” characters within the story, I still couldn’t really put them as my favorite. Maybe I would put bias on Yoon Yoon Jae because of his good looks, but other than that I still equally loved every character. I also personally think that their accents were cute, it was real and was not irritating (since they are all from Busan it would eventually seem natural, right?). Then there were the consistencies in their characters which I am so happy for, because not even one actor deviated from their role. To pinpoint the specific characteristics of each cast, I liked: Shi-won’s boisterous attitude, Yoon Jae’s undying love and loyalty, Yoo Joong’s inconsistencies, Joon Hee’s secrets, Hak Chan’s annoyingness, Sung Jae’s eccentricity, Tae Woong’s indifference to money/fame and lastly Shi-won’s parents; her dad who bickers a lot and her mom who cooks a mountain of food for some apparent reason.
Music wise, it added impact on the drama but it wasn’t something that really got into my head for me to remember much.
This drama is re-watchable, very much… but a vital segment in the story makes this unappealing for a re-play and that is the mystery part. That actually perked my interest into finishing the drama in the first place – “the guess who and what happened to whom?” guessing game was one of the important thing in this drama. But once you are over that, this drama would not be as interesting as it was the first time. I re-watch this for the sole reason of feeling giddy over the love triangles and the petty arguments. Those scenes were still awesome even for the second time around.
Over all Reply 1997 made it to my Top 10 best Kdrama’s and I would definitely recommend this to everyone. But this drama would most suit those who had lived in the 90’s, got addicted in boy bands and lived life with loyal friends.
Reply 1997 (Korean Drama 2012) Drama Rating: 9/10 The story revolves around the life of Sung Shi Won, a female high school student and a full time fan girl of a boyband called H.O.T.

응답하라 1997 / Reply 1997
Tumblr media
Reply 1997 is a 2012 South Korean school, youth, friendship, rom-com drama starring Jung Eun Ji, Seo In Guk, Hoya, Shin So Yool, Eun Ji Won and Lee Shi Eon.
Synopsis:
The story is set in the 1990s in Busan and tells the story of Shi Won, a female high school student, who is obsessed with the boyband H.O.T, and her 5 high school friends. The story moves back and forth between their past as 18-year-old high schoolers in 1997 and their present 33-year-olds at their high school reunion dinner in 2012.
My Opinion:
Recently I had a lot of difficulties to watch a drama and pay full attention to it. I even often missed the most important parts and had to rewind in order to keep up with the story. Reply 1997 somehow managed to keep my attention from the beginning to the very end and there wasn't a single moment, where I felt bored.
Why is that so? First of all, the length of the episodes were perfect. They were only about 45 minutes long, so compared to other dramas, it felt like the episodes were just flying by without dragging and made me binge-watch this show. Secondly, the story was very simple, which I enjoyed a lot. It Although there were no spectacular plot twists, it was not boring at all. It was very close to reality, which is something I like a lot. Consequently, it is easier to empathize with the characters. I didn't find the flashbacks annoying at all. Switching between the past and the present made the story actually even more interesting.
Tumblr media
The actors in this drama were all really great and managed to portray their characters in a realistic and convincing way. I loved the friendship in this drama a lot and I have to admit that these characters even made me cry sometimes.  Moreover, the romance was pretty good as well. It wasn't cheesy at all and as a result, I found the relationship between the two main characters super refreshing. I do like cheese a lot hahaha, but sometimes you just need to watch something more realistic.
Tumblr media
The only thing I found quite annoying was their Busan dialect hahahah. I still remember that time when every dialect just sounded completely the same to me and I wasn't able to distinguish whether someone was speaking a dialect or not. But now that I have watched a lot of Korean shows, I figured it out and at first it was extremely distracting. It really took me a while to get used to it.
Overall, this was a super sweet and light drama with lovable characters and a lovable story line.
Rating:
Overall: 8.5/10
Story: 8/10
Actor Performance: 10/10
Couple Chemistry: 9/10
Music: 8/10

▫︎ ▪︎  ━ sᴘʜᴇʀᴇ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛᴢ ᴄᴀsᴛɪɴɢ
if the new sphere announcement reading girl crush wasn’t enough to tempt gahyeon into auditioning, then it was her talk with yena that put gahyeon over the edge. they both saw it – and they were roommates, so of course they’d end up talking about it. they’d waited until they were actually home to talk about it – no use getting their company-mates upset or bothered if they decided otherwise, but it felt inevitable when they’d stepped into their apartment for the night and sat down to talk. because it’s not that gahyeon’s ungrateful for everything that royal has given her, but she’s just so tired of waiting.
so, what was taking one chance ?
regardless of whether or not gahyeon was put on the heartz schedule or not, part of her felt like she needed to stop relying so much on that company loyalty and do what was best for her. she can almost hear chungha’s voice in her head as she thinks it – because quite honestly, although it’d only been about two years, gahyeon was antsy. she grinded for two years with no response on her progress, nothing to really show for it except blood, sweat, and tears.
if anything, she just wanted to feel like she was progressing again.
in the end, it was no different than being a part of royal. not knowing whether or not you’d debut, still working alongside the other girls to make the best picture – but not knowing how that picture will be framed. gahyeon just wanted to take a chance, because she was tired. sometimes she feels like maybe, she shouldn’t be – in the end, two years isn’t so long compared to some of the other trainees she knew. but for the chance to debut, gahyeon thinks she’d take it. even if it’s not with the girls she’d trained with, she still had the chance to debut with yena. that alone was enough for her.
over the time they’d spend together, gahyeon and yena had turned into a team. for one reason or another, gahyeon had latched onto the other girl, and yena had taken it in stride. if they were doing this, then they were doing it together regardless of the reservations she had about leaving royal. with the other by her side, gahyeon felt like maybe this was something she could do. alone, gahyeon was sure she’d have shied away from such an opportunity, and would never find herself working toward a feasible goal until royal stopped focusing so much on the luxe girls and finally did something with their remaining trainees. but that even seemed eons away. gahyeon was willing to take this chance, as long as she had yena by her side.
when it came to recording the video, it didn’t take much to commandeer a dance studio for herself in royal.
gahyeon started the camera, set up on a tripod like she does for her choreography videos, and steps back. she smiles at the camera, and bows. “ hello, i am royal entertainment’s lee gahyeon. ” she introduces once she straightens back up, waving gently at the camera in greeting – much like she would if she were in front of a panel of judges. “ thank you for taking time out of your day to consider me for your debut project. i will be performing kkpp by miso. ”she introduces before the track starts.
gahyeon always practiced meticulously, worked hard to maintain her own personal standards of excellence which she found were typically on-par with her coach’s standards. since arriving at royal after the mgas, gahyeon’s goal was to always be better. she could get a little bit better every single day. when she had started, she was certainly no master rapper or vocalist, but now she could much better hold a tune and would consider herself royal’s star rapper. not to mention, she was hard to miss onstage – but that was never a problem. overtime, she’d learned confidence and had become a better performer, a more sure performer – even if that confidence was sometimes feigned.
but this – no, gahyeon knew she was ready for this.
perhaps whoever the judges were for the project remembered that meek girl that stood onstage at the mgas – because regardless of how she looks at it, gahyeon knows she wasn’t nearly as confident as she pretended she was. and the ceos themselves probably saw through that confident facade. if baek jiyoung herself ever saw the video, maybe she’d remember that girl she’d told couldn’t sing years ago – and granted, gahyeon wasn’t a stellar vocalist, but she can hold a tune now.
this song was confident and fun, a little teasing and cheeky as she talked about how pretty and confident she was – and gahyeon doesn’t think those are quite faked anymore. gahyeon wasn’t self-centered or self-obsessed, but over the years she’d spent maturing she’d learned something about herself – she actually didn’t hate herself as much as she used to. actually, it probably boiled down to gentle displeasure with occasional mess-ups, never the full-blown self-hatred she used to have for herself. if anything had become apparent, it was that gahyeon was much more comfortable in her skin and more aware of her own skillset. years ago, gahyeon wouldn’t even have considered herself a decent dancer, even if she had been a stellar one even back then. but it showed it every movement, every step, every shake – she was confident now. she believed in herself a whole lot more than she ever had.
to gahyeon, this song was very gahyeon of her to be performing.
every movement had purpose. every step was precise. everything about the performance was very gahyeon, and orchestrated to perfection during gahyeon’s practices, she didn’t once have to worry while recording that she would step out of line, out of place – that something wrong would happen, because gahyeon trusted herself. she trusted that she could do it because she’d shown bright time and time again during every performance she’d done thus far. she’d proven to herself that she was ready and that she was talented. she had so much to show – and she would put it out on that stage every single time, even if that stage was just the practice room.
gahyeon takes a strong center stance when the song comes to an end, standing tall despite her short stature. because everything gahyeon has done has been an aim for debut, and she doesn’t want to pass up this chance a second time. admittedly, girl crush is gahyeon’s ideal and although she’s aware they were also searching for a pure concept last time, gahyeon gets the feeling the group isn’t the cutesy one she was imagining. regardless of concept, gahyeon was determined to show that she could showcase what sphere wanted, and look good doing it too. by the end, she’s sure she’s achieved that.
once the song ends and gahyeon’s left standing, with the only thing to be heard being her even breathing ( she thanks the stars that she worked so hard on performing live ), gahyeon knows that she’s put herself out there. that she’s shown them what she has and hopes to the heavens that they want it. after a moment, she breaks and bows down respectfully at the camera again. “ thank you for your time. i hope you enjoyed my performance, and consider me for your project. i promise to work hard if given the chance, and i know you wouldn’t regret your decision in choosing me. ” gahyeon says, before bowing again, then moving to shut off the camera.

12 and 21 for the angst prompts (gaalee)
im going to do prompt 12 another day, i swear, but this was... a lot to write and it’s taken me literally all night and i just wanted to post this now
21 i don’t want to lose youpart 4/5 of if wanting were enough i’d take you by the handTW: suicide attempt (seriously this one is not an easy one to read and if you cannot read it, if you think it’ll be too triggering, please do not push yourself. this is a very personal exploration of my own mental health, but i do not want anyone putting themselves in a bad place. im placing this under a cut so proceed with extreme caution)
[kofi]
He jumps.
He falls.
He flies.
The morning air rushes past him as he plummets, his weights pulling him down faster. His heart is in his throat and tears blur his vision as he falls towards the earth. The morning sun is a blur of soft golden hues, a kaleidoscope of light refracting within the salt water of his eyes.
He feels free for the first time in far too long.
He feels weightless.
He feels wonderful.
He laughs, the sound swallowed by the wind rushing around him, but it turns into a sob. He is flying to his death, falling towards the inevitable moment of impact. He has jumped towards the unknown, allowed gravity to pull him down, down, down... And when he finally stop--
A memory comes to him, unbidden. It is the memory of a dream, but it makes his heart ache to be on solid ground, not plummeting towards it.
Regret burns through him, like lava pouring from a long dormant volcano. It sears through him, smokes in his veins until he is consumed with it; with longing; with want.
He wants, for the first time, to live.
He punches a hand into the solid wall of rock that hides Suna within, dragging himself painfully. He has too much momentum though, his weights too heavy and the pull of gravity even stronger than he is. He pushes chakra into his arm and flings the other one towards the wall, digging his fingers into stone.
He feels the snap of bone as several fingers break against the stone, but he doesn’t let go. He doesn’t stop trying to hold on. He closes his eyes tight, pushes poorly manipulated chakra into his arms with as much force as he can until he feels himself slow.
It isn’t enough and the ground crashes into him, shattering his weak right leg and sending an explosive wave of sand into the air. His world goes black before he can pray to the gods of the desert that someone finds him.
---
Pain has always been a sign of growth--he becomes stronger, faster, harder, better. In the wake of pain, he is one step closer to being splendid. Pain has always been firmly categorized in his mind as “good”, as “progress”, as “someday I will be good enough.”
He pushes himself to the point of pain because it has always been the only way to measure his worth.
But when Lee wakes to pain, to agony, to suffering it is beyond the pain of “good” or “progress” or “enough”. His body has known pain like this only once before, and even that pain does not come close to what this feels like. A blury memory, choppy and incomplete, hits him with the force the ground had.
With the memory comes shame, comes regret. He wishes that he could take it back, wishes that the past could be altered somehow, wishes that he’d known any other way besides pain.
It takes him a lifetime, an age, an eon to adjust to the pain.
At the edge of his senses, as he finally acclimates to a body he’d rather not be in, he senses someone familiar. He becomes aware, too, of a dull beeping somewhere in the room and voices outside. His nose stings with the smell of herbs and antiseptic.
He swallows, thickly. His mouth feels like sand and tastes like ash, his throat feels stuff full of cotton. He coughs, and the presence beside him moves closer, an intensity closing in on him.
“Lee?”
Fingertips touch his temple, gentle and unsure, awkward and stiff.
He sighs, peeling his eyes open to look up into Gaara’s face. He looks sick, exhausted in ways Lee had never thought possible; his eyes are heavy and bloodshot, and his skin looks dull and lifeless. Lee shies away from that word as he looks away from Gaara to survey his hospital room.
“Where--” He coughs on the question, his throat too dry for speech, and almost immediately there is a glass of water in front of him. He hesitates to meet Gaara’s gaze past the glass, but eventually he does.
There are tears in his eyes, threatening to fall--and that’s another word Lee shies away from all too quickly.
He sips the water carefully, and some dribbles down the side of his mouth. It’s room temperature and tastes a little stale, as though it’s been sitting for just a little too long in the warmth of his room.
“How--why--” Lee wants to ask a million questions once his throat does not feel as though a drought has occurred within him, but he doesn’t know where to begin. Gaara looks stricken, as though Lee’s voice is that of a ghost speaking.
He swallows again, steeling himself for what he’s about to say.
“You saved me.”
The tears in Gaara’s eyes roll down his face. His eyes are crystalline, reflecting the artificial light of the hospital in a way that makes the green of them look unnatural.
“Did I?” he asks, voice gruff around the words and his tears.
“I am alive,” Lee says.
Gaara’s lip trembles. “Are you...? Or are you a ghost?”
Lee knows what Gaara is asking, what he’s saying with that question. Tears of his own fall, but he has to fight not to sob openly because he can feel how it will hurt, how it will subsume his body with pain; pain he deserves--
He stops himself from that line of thinking, meeting Gaara’s tear-filled eyes with his own. “I do not want to be a ghost anymore.”
Lee doesn’t know exactly what he’d thought Gaara would say or do at this, but he does not expect Gaara to collapse in on himself, face crumpling and eyes brimming with so many tears that they have become sea foam. He leans heavily against Lee’s bed, hovering over Lee as though he wants to crawl onto him, into him, bury himself within Lee and hold him tight enough so he can never leave.
It takes Gaara long moments to collect himself. He cries quietly, his face scrunched up in ways Lee has never seen as tears run amuck across his face, down his nose, beneath his chin. They fall to the bedsheets, like rain, darkening the plain white like a scattered spring shower.
Lee washes Gaara cry in silence. He doesn’t want to see this, but he feels he owes it to Gaara to witness this--to witness the devastation he’s caused.
“Y-you should have died,” Gaara says. The words hurt more than his body, but Gaara keeps talking before Lee can runaway with the horrible truth that Gaara had wanted him dead all along. “I thought--when I found you--I was so sure. You should have died on impact, there was so much blood and you were unconscious, and--” He breaks off, looking away from Lee as though looking at him is a reminder of that very day, as though Gaara is not looking at a healing Lee but a dying Lee.
Lee’s voice trembles when he speaks, weak and fragile like delicate glass. “I w-wish I could--I could take it back. All of it. Everything that has happened since I came here, everything.”
Gaara looks at him with wide, glassy eyes, something flickering behind them that Lee cannot name. “Everything?”
Lee nods. His memory is like wisps of smoke that he cannot hold onto, but he would never forget their kiss. “Everything,” he confirms.
“No.” Gaara is seething, the word slips from him like some sort of magic, a binding curse that Lee cannot free himself from. “You can’t. Don’t you dare take that back.”
Lee frowns up at Gaara, confusion heavy on his brow. “But... you pushed me away.”
“I was scared.”
Lee comes up short. He doesn’t know what to think of this admission, doesn’t know what he’s meant to do with it. He is stuck now on the fact that Gaara does not want him to take back the kiss, hung up on the fact that Gaara won’t let him take it back.
“When you first came here, I thought I could help,” Gaara says quietly. “I thought... It was self-important to think that because I’d been through trauma and loss, that I could somehow fix you. But I wanted to see you smile again.
“Sometimes you seemed to be getting better, but then you’d slip away again. We were all scared of what you’d do to yourself, but I thought if I just kept an eye on you it would be okay. You would be okay. Eventually. But you weren’t. And I yelled at you, and then you didn’t come home. I’d thought you had done something, I’d thought you’d hurt yourself but you were there, just sitting on the edge of the plateau, watching the sun rise.”
He sucks in a breath, practically gasps as though the memory itself has winded him.
“Do you love me?”
The question startles Lee so much he flinches. It hurts to move, and the hurting of movement causes his body to seize up in protest. It hurts all the more of this.
“I should get a medic.”
“N-no, wait. Please.” Lee shifts, but he cannot push himself up--his left hand is in a cast and his right arm so heavily bandaged he cannot see his skin beneath, but he can feel the pull of his skin and knows it is not a sight worth seeing.
Gaara moves closer, hesitating at the edge of the bed before he takes a seat.
Lee wants to hold his hand, he wants to touch him so that he knows Gaara will not run away again. And maybe because he hopes it will offer Gaara some semblance of comfort too.
After a moment of fighting with tendons and ligaments he knows he damaged, Lee manages to move his bandaged hand enough that it gently presses against Gaara’s thigh. The pressure hurts, however gentle it may be, but he doesn’t care. He knows he should care, knows he needs to stop thinking of pain as unquestioningly positive, but he wants to be a little selfish for just a little bit longer; he wants to feel Gaara as he pours his heart out to him.
“I do not want to give you an answer that is anything less than the truth,” he manages to say, though the words are not as steady and strong as he would have liked them to be. “For a long time, I have thought about you. And maybe that is...” He pauses, his head beginning to ache. The lights are too bright and he is sure he has some head trauma, but he needs to get this out before he forgets. “In truth, I do not think I know what love means anymore.”
Gaara is watching him, still as a statue save for the subtle movement of his eyes as they flit across Lee’s face. He doesn’t speak, and Lee is grateful for that if only because he is afraid of what Gaara will say.
“And I do not think I know how to be as I was anymore, and I know that as I am now, it would be unfair to say I do. I might not. I may just... love that you are here when I need someone.”
Gaara lets out a shaky breath, lips parting fractionally to let the breath escape. Tears glisten in his eyes, and Lee wants so badly to reach up and wipe them away. He can’t--physically limited as he is--and he shouldn’t. Before Gaara can think to say anything in response, Lee continues.
“I have hurt you. I have been selfish in my grief. I have thought of only myself--and perhaps that is understandable, perhaps to a point it is even reasonable. But it has been almost a year, and I have not allowed myself to heal. I have wallowed, and any chance at healing I have rebuffed. I was so determined not to go on without my sensei that I pushed everyone away, pushed myself away. And because of that, I have hurt you.
“I never meant to,” he adds, tears coming to his eyes unbidden. “I truly never meant to. I just... I wanted it to stop. I wanted to...” He presses his lips together, fighting tears and the agony that comes with his words. “I do not know anymore. I just--every day it felt as though someone had come and carved a hole in my chest. I did not know who I was anymore--I do not know who I am.
“And after what happened, I do not know what it will take to get better, but I want to get better. I do. And maybe if I can, maybe if I do then I can tell you without a doubt that I do love you.” He wants so badly to tell Gaara he loves him, wants so badly for something beautiful to come from all the ugliness he’s felt, but he wants it to be real; he doesn’t want to give Gaara false promises and false love.
His head is throbbing fiercely now, along with the rest of his body. Exhaustion runs through his veins, and it is suddenly difficult to think of all the important things he’d realised as he’d fallen towards his death. He opens his mouth, but only manages to slur on words his mind is too sleepy to remember.
Gaara reaches out for him, touching his cheek with those same unsure fingertips. He trails them across his face, wiping at tears, then moves to touch his lips.
“I don’t want to lose you again,” Gaara tells him.
Lee wants to promise him that he won’t, wants to promise “never again”, but he can’t. He doesn’t know who he is or who he will become, and he doesn’t want to promise that Gaara won’t lose the person Lee used to be.
“I will get better,” he says, because he thinks he can at least promise that. “When I do, if I know my feelings for you to be true, I will come back.”
“You’re going?”
“I think it is for the best.” His eyes droop, but he fights against it. “You have done everything you can--too much, in fact. It is time I get better on my own, Kazekage-sama.”
Gaara’s nod is a tiny, imperceptible thing, barely a motion at all. “I’ll be here when you’re ready.”
Lee manages to smile, a proper smile, for what feels like the first time. “Thank you.”
