This is a LONG ONE, it’s been A WEEK everyone. 

Ongoing Series - Thai

Lovely Writer Ep 5 - a little slow this week, but at least Gene finally flirted back, and very cute flirting it was, too. Also we got Aey’s motivation, background, and love interest. Thank goodness for that. 

Brothers Ep 8 - still pants, what can I say? Clearly I am a BL masochist. Very embarrassing for everyone concerned. 

1000 Stars Ep 9 - the conflict over Tian’s father was REALLY well done. The plot of this drama is excellent, the leads are great together, and yes I totally cried. What, you didn’t? 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Word of Honor (China) Ep 16-18 - big battle fighty fighty stabby stabby. Ep 17 switches to “this drama isn’t big enough for two chaotic-neutral godlings!” So what do they do? Drink together and bicker... A LOT. Then in Ep 18 we all get the dubious joy of really freaky puppets. (I HATE puppets.) Also how is China letting this be so SO VERY VERY GAY?  Also, I wanna walk through the forest wearing a smanshy purple robe and waving a big fuck-off white fan around simply because I’m a pretentious fuss monger. And frankly, I feel like this is an achievable life goal for me. 

We Best Love 2 (Taiwan) Ep 4 - not gonna lie, this is looking to be one of my top 3 BLs of 2021. It’s SO GOOD. Big bonus to this ep for treating stalker behavior like the mental illness it is and not as some dumb representation of enduring love. 

The Most Peaceful Place is My Place (Vietnam) Ep 1 - finally dropped (find it under NƠI BÌNH YÊN NHẤT LÀ VỀ BÊN EM on O2′s channel). It’s got actors already comfortable with BL and looks pretty good so far. An angry tsundere uke reunited with his ex, a stoic chef, giving us lots of snap, crackle, and pop out the gate. 

Dear Uranus (Taiwan GL) Ep 2 - I want to love it, but it is just moving too fast. There’s not enough character dev and then they’re throwing flashbacks in? It feels like a treatment rather than a show, and a rushed treatment at that. Bummer. 

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 2 (AKA Ep 3-4) - let the cheesy popcorn continue! Idiot remains an idiot; ingenue remains an ice queen; nice gay guy remains nice and gay; obsessive stalker brother is getting ever more whackadoddle. Of course these last two have the best chemistry. (It’s caregiver codependency and the salvation trope. We got us a Leo/Fiat situation going on.​) Plus lots of classic BL tropes because OF COURSE there are lots of tropes. 

Occasionally, I am tempted to argue that shows like H4 or Cherry Magic or Ossan’s Love aren’t technically BL because of the office setting and age of the protags - but then they all behave like high school students anyway, so *shrug* 

Stand Alones

Cute little Taiwanese micro BL Friend or Lover dropped, about bisexual realization within a friendship group. Normally these are too short for me, but this one did pretty good with its 15 minutes of charm, plus it’s abad boy + shy softy pairing. 

Breaking News - Thai BL

Fish Upon the Sky released its actual trailer. The upside-down kiss is gone, which makes everyone sad, and it seems far less rivals to lovers than the first iteration, which makes ME sad. But it still looks good and a more classic BL than GMMTV has given us in a while. New trailer focused more on the makeover trope and they’ve upped Mix’s role (the object of everyone’s affection) now that he’s proved himself. (Or they are using him more to carry the trailer since he has a fan base form 1k*). Starts April 9 on GMMTV in 1K*’s time slot, probably with a 10 ep run. 

2gether the movie is apparently coming April 22 to Thai theaters. F4 Thailand must be having issues or GMMTV just wants to milk the BrightWin cash cow. It’s rumored to be a combination of 2gehter + Still 2gether with some extra scenes and ending. Also, one assumes a lot will be cut out, if it’s movie length.

Call It What You Want released its updated trailer. If anything, it looks more scary than before. What are we in for? April 9th. 

Nitiman got a release date, May 7 on One31. 

I Told Sunset About You 2 got an updated release date of May 27 on LineTV. 

Second Chance the series is coming to LineTV on March 29. I don’t know much about this one. Tons of familiar faces (mostly TharnType side dishes) and some nice looking new talent but a dearth of eng subs. I think it may take on Brothers’ time slot. Line did eng subs for Brothers so maybe they will do 2nd Chance too? 

Close Friend the series is coming April 22. This is a combination of 6 couples with 6 story arcs as music videos (maybe)? It’s an epic fan service with familiar faces like OhmFluke (UWMA), MaxNat (LBC also in Y-Destiny), YoonLay (YYY also in Y-Destiny), KimCop (GenY), and JaFirst (TT2).

Y-Destiny starts March 30, and has starting dropping couple’s trailers. I’m still suspicious given the director but it seems like there is plot (or plots) and a theme. Looks to be a series of 7 single ep vignettes (amended, see comments, might be 2 eps each for 14 eps total), different couple each time, some with supernatural elements, all with decent chemistry and acting chops.

I’m thinking we can’t expect any of these to end happy or be classic BL. They’re gonna be more slice of life-ish. 

Gossip - BL Outside of Thailand 

Scholar Ryu’s Wedding Ceremony AKA Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korean historical BL) got a legit teaser (eng sub here). @curriculumvtae​ reports that it’s releasing April 15th on WeTV (Philippines & Thailand) and Idol Romance (South Korea), while Will of Thai Bl says it’ll be on Viki too. It’s a short run of 8 ep built on a fake relationship trope (arranged marriage variant):

Ryu Ho Seon’s (Kang In Soo from You Wish) arranged marriage turns out to be with his expected bride’s brother, Choi Ki Wan (Lee Se Jin from Mr Heart). Ryu tries to undo the marriage, but his ill mother opposes this saying the scandal would be too much. Meanwhile, Kim Tae Hyeong (Jang Eui Soo from Where Your Eyes Linger), a senior at Ryu’s school, comes to congratulate him and falls in love with Choi. Then one day, the original bride disappears.

Okay it seems a bit twisty turny for ONLY 8 EPS, but oh my goodness how excited are we? Our first intentional historical BL out of Korea!

We already knew Hong Kong was doing a remake of Japan’s Ossan’s Love under the same name (not my favorite Japanese BL but so very popular) but it’s now reported to be coming to Viu in June. Who knows how the CFA will take it. Depends on whether Hong Kong bows before the NO GAY KISSES regs or if they are going to use this as a political nose thumb... things could get cray with this puppy (the original has several kisses and s shower scene). Are we back in Addicted territory only with added comedy and civil unrest?

Speaking of Japan, Absolute BL (AKA Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai vs Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko) dropped sooner than anyone thought, March 27. But being Japanese who knows how/when/if we get subs. Protag finds himself trapped in a world of BL, but being straight he fights against any hot guy that draws near, but the whole world (literally) is conspiring against him. It’s a parody adapted from a yoai.

What with Absolute BL from Japan plus Lovely Writer and Call it What You Want from Thailand, is 2021 the year of BL being ultra self referential? Sure feels like it.

In Case You Missed It

Faded a gay micro film from Taiwan from 2017 deals with parental acceptance and serves up a ton of BL tropes (piggyback, forehead kiss, etc). I’m pretty sure this was a propaganda piece for legalization of gay marriage, and it’s an interesting nugget of BL history as a result. Yes, it ends happy. It’s cute.

Tell me all about Willow and Jon Grady!! I'm talking plot summary, fic link if you've got it, heck, even crossover thoughts if you want to (if not no pressure)!! (this may or not be for Jurassic OCs Weekly...)

HERE WE GO!

Willow and Jonathan Grady are the children of Owen Grady (he met their mother, Adelaide, during one of his leaves). Will’s fc is Katherine McNamara and Jon’s is Alexander Ludwig. Jon is the oldest, and is WAY more chill than Will. He’s in college around the time of the events of JW, studying to be a marine biologist. He’s legit the best big brother; when he and Will were children, he always let her hang out with him and his friends if she wanted to. Jon is also a champion swimmer (particularly in backstroke), the Mosasaurus is his fave dinosaur (he nicknamed her Moana), he likes to sail in his free time, and he has a massive crush on one of Will’s best friends (although @claryxjackson and I have a crossover with Jon and her JW OC, Cody, and they are the true OTP). Now, I should say that Jon is only briefly shown during Will’s JW story. He becomes more prominent in Fallen Kingdom.

Willow Grady is the youngest, and she has a VERY turbulent relationship with Owen. Now, as kids, she adored her dad and she would be SO excited to go and visit him when he was training the raptors because Owen had them bond with her and Jon as well. Blue, in particular, took a shine to Will. However, the relationship began to sour when Owen started becoming more focused on the raptors, and not on Jon and Will growing up. By the time JW happens, Will full on hates her dad and the raptors and refuses to have anything to do with them.

Will is an artist; she loves to sketch and paint, thanks in part to her godmother Lex Murphy (she and Adelaide were roommates in college). She also is a basketball player and an equestrian rider. She has a total of 3 pets: her first is Penny, her main horse. Second is Maya, the Husky-Wolf hybrid she bought while on a trip to MT with her friends. Third is Flicka, a wild black filly she befriended on the same MT trip. Will and Rexy have a unique bond as well; when her relationship between Owen and the raptors started to deteriorate, she would go to Rexy’s enclosure and hang with her. Over the years, Rexy started considering Will as the hatchling she never had and was VERY protective over her.

Will started out as a love interest for Zach Mitchell, but since Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins aren’t in Fallen Kingdom or Dominion, I created a new love interest for her named Leo. He was a childhood friend of Jon’s, and Will had a massive crush on him.

Fight Breaks Sphere Thoughts

So I started watching Fight Breaks Sphere, also known as Battle Through Heavens, and I have a few confessions to make (some thoughts to ramble about):

First of all it's based off a book which I haven't read so these thoughts are specific to the drama. (also I've only finished up to the end of episode 17 and am about to start 18.)

I honestly started watching it because I found out Xiao Zhan was in it (Wei Ying from The Untamed), and I think that's why I didn't enjoy the first episode enough to immediately go to the next episode, because Xiao Zhan wasn't in it and I was only there for him.

Now Xiao Zhan's character doesn't actually show up on screen until about nine minutes into episode four, and he's very much a supporting cast member, a secondary character, and he doesn't get a lot of screen time while he's there. I knew this was likely going in, because he's listed as a secondary character in the wikipedia entry about it, but he gets less screen than the other secondary characters 'of the same importance'.

His character, Lin Xiuya, also had to go 'do a thing' at the end of episode... 12 or 13? I think it was 13, but this wasn't the worst thing ever for me as a viewer, especially since I'm pretty sure he'll be back later.

Regarding Xiao Zhan's presence in the show though? I would not have made it to his appearance if the story line hadn't 'picked up'.

Now, to be fair my primary dislike of the first episode was a combination of new episode issues (so many new characters and names and relationships and histories to keep track of, I have a whole new type of lore to start getting a handle on) but it was also a lack of Xiao Zhan.

I think if I hadn't gone in waiting for him to show up I would have enjoyed it more, but again, I was only there to see him, so...

Once I chose to watch episode two I was more prepared to be there for the story itself and I found myself getting engaged with the plot.

I'm about to start episode 18, so that should tell you how much more I'm enjoying it, but I have a few issues.

Main character is Xiao Yan, of the Xiao clan (an important sect in the land, part of important lore and backstory of the world).

He starts off as a child prodigy, and then his mother gives him a Spatial Ring right before she dies, and he suddenly finds himself with basically no Fighting Qi. (Fight Qi or 'Dou Qi' is the spiritual energy used for their fighting magic. I'd call this show a Xianxia rather than a Wuxia/ Mystical Ancient 'China' rather than a Fiction Historical China.)

Spoilers for the first episode: his mother's master/teacher is stuck in the Spatial Ring and has been absorbing Xiao Yan's Fight Qi to survive being killed, which has been leaving Xiao Yan drained of Qi and therefore unable to use it and most folks now consider him a bit of a dud.

The thing is these folks use Fight Qi for basically everything, so even though Xiao Yan has been training the physical aspects of the martial arts/Kung Fu of his clan, he's still considered no good at it.

He's told to become an apothecary's assistant and, god he's just the whiniest little shit. I get where he's coming from, I do, he wants to be a Kung Fu bad-ass, not a freaking pill maker... except being a pill maker is a super important and well respected job in this world, it's like 'yeah fighters are cool, but the dudes who make the pills are top notch!' But we'll circle back to this.

The point is, he's a typical teenager whose life isn't going the way he wants it to because he can't do this one thing, but he doesn't want to do anything else.

And then he finds out about the lavender haired lush living in his magic ring aka his mother's teacher. (Legit his old-man-hair looks vaguely purple, I don't know if this is on purpose or just the colour adjustment on my screen, and he somehow stole a crap load of wine from inside the Spatial Ring.)

And well.

Xiao Yan takes that about as well as can be expected, and tries to get the teacher to teach him, it takes a while but the guy agrees, and most importantly now that the teacher has stabilised, he no longer needs to drain all the Qi from Xiao Yan. (or something?)

Plus Xiao Yan got to watch the teacher, his mother's master known as Medicine Lord (or Medicine Elder in the translation I'm watching), make a fancy medicine which improves Qi Levels, and takes it to get back up to snuff. (Medicine Elder actually made it so Xiao Yan could sell it to buy a supply of wine for him, only Xiao Yan's dad saw it at auction and went: 'aha! A way to help my son not suck at fighting stuff' and buys it and gives it to him.)

(There are performance enhancing drugs abounds in this show.)

And just like that he's become the smartest and most wisest and most capable of all his peers, he is once again a prodigy. Which is where my main problem is with this show.

I don't mind an OP protagonist, but this guy gets a new McGuffin  or super power every other episode I swear.

Worse, we have to assume he's leaps and bound above his peers because he leads the first years to victory against their senior students in their first week, and then beats a few seniors one on 'one' after a new power up is acquired, but for the most part the guys in his year level are shunted out of the way when the good fights/skill tests come along, so we don't really get to see them enough to make a comparison.

(There's a fist fight in the water room, but there's so many people in there that the screen time is pretty split amongst the 'not the protag' characters, so still hard to get a read.)

Not only with fighting skills, but he's also learning all the cool tricks to become the best medicine maker (they use the term Alchemist) ever, like he's just so good, he's better than even the seniors at this thing which he scorned back in the first episode when he wasn't allowed to learn to punch things with magic powers.

Of course, if Xiao Yan does come up against something he doesn't know how to handle, he can just pop into the Spatial Ring to ask his grand master for help and boom: new training montage and ability.

Literally time passes super fast inside the Ring so he can learn a technique that takes him a long time to master basically over night. Downside is he's dead to the real world while that happens.

And oh yeah, he keeps getting power boosts, generally its presented as he's grown wise enough to find ways to increase his power and he's just so intuitive but...

Look, long and short?

I'm sad there's not more Xiao Zhan in this show, The protag is increasingly OP, but he's increasingly OP in an obnoxious way and his primary moment of character growth just seemed to have happened 'at some point', he went from whiny angry teen to team leader and it seemed to happen very suddenly, but I can't say when, and the supporting cast feels like they're just there to let us know how awesome the protag is rather than be people.

Also, and I mention this because I had to reverse charge so hard: I did ship Xiao Yan with Xiao Xun'er, because they had this cute childhood friends to budding teen crush thing going on, and the wikipedia says she's one of his two wives in the novel, so I was all aboard cause she's adorable... she's also his biological cousin. Like I had assumed their shared last name was just a 'it's a sect name that many people in the sect have but he's from the main branch in charge' kind of thing, but no, she's full on adopted by Xiao Yan's dad, because reasons, and also Xiao Yan's mother and Xiao Xun'er biological father were siblings. So now I'm stuck with the knowledge that this really cute ship is incest, (and not just 'technically because adoption' either,) which ruins a lot.

Overall I'm definitely enjoying it, I wouldn't be about to watch episode 18 if I wasn't enjoying it, but I could be enjoying it more.

Also I much prefer his hairstyle from episode 4 onwards, it's just a superior hair style.

1. What is your name?

Captain Erich Richardson, United States Army, 13th Mechanized Calvary Regiment.

2. Any idea why you’re named that?

(shrugs) Not really. I guess mom and dad really liked the name.

3. Single or taken?

In which era of time? (chuckles) Yes. I was married to my high school sweetheart Nora Spencer before... (clears throat) She’s... passed on. I’m now married to a one Ms. Piper Wright.

4. Any abilities or powers?

Um... no. Unless you count being able to sleep anywhere or being able to run long distances.

5. Stop being a Mary Sue

Um... okay? Don’t know why you’d say that, but okay.

6. What color are your eyes?

Brown~ish amber? I’m not sure. I’ve been told both.

7. What about your hair color?

I’d say it’s brown. Piper, on the other hand, would say that there’s a trace of red in there.

8. Do you have any family members?

(shifts uncomfortably in seat) Uh... that’s complicated. I have a son and my wife, but beyond that, no. Unless you count my friends, then yes. Most of my biological family either died before the Great War or very soon after.

9. Oh... What about pets?

Oh yeah hahaha. Dogmeat is my dog. Smartest pup you’ll meet in the Commonwealth, and the best dog to boot.

10. Ain’t that the truth. Now what is something that you don’t like?

I’d have to say that I’m not a fan of having to raising my son in the post-apocalypse, but that’s a little out of my hands.

11. What is your favorite hobby?

This might sound weird, but I enjoy running. We had to run in the army for PT, but I also ran competitively while I was in school. I love getting my laps in around the Island, and to run down the streets of downtown. If the place wasn’t crawling with things that would love to kill me, I’d love to run the old Boston Marathon route. I also really like tinkering with my power armor, making sure it’s the best in the Commonwealth.

12. Have you hurt anyone in any way before?

Define “hurt”... either way, I’m pretty sure I have.

13. I guess a good follow-up question would be have you killed anyone?

(shifts awkwardly in seat again and stare at the floor. silence for a few moments before he responds) Yeah. More than my fair share.

14. What are some of your worst habits?

Wow, hitting with the hard questions? Um... I swear too much, sleep too little or sleep too much, and I can be really rude to everyone.

15. Who would you say are your role models?

Oh boy... Before the war, it was my dad. He’s the one who was always strong, always shouldered the burdens that were put on his shoulders. I wanted to be like him when I grew up. I’ve been pretty lucky to meet some people out here who inspire me to be better, particularly Nick Valentine. Nick really took me under his wing when I first stumbled into Diamond City, and I try every day to live in a way that would make him and dad proud.

16. Do you go to school?

The only school I go to right now is the school of wasteland survival. Before the war, I went to Utah Institute of Technology and Agriculture, as well as The United States Military Academy. I studied general engineering at both, which I can tell you has come in handy in so many ways out here in the Commonwealth.

17. Do you ever want to get married and have kids?

Come on, man, I told you I’m already married and have a kid hahaha. Now... having more kids? I dunno man. Piper and I have kinda talked about it ever since Shaun joined our family. It’s just... The world now is so different, and I don’t know if I could bring another kid into the world like this one.

18. Any fangirls/boys?

Um... I mean, I think Curie might be a little sweet on me, but she feels like she owes me a lot for what I’ve helped her through. Paladin Danse and Hancock, maybe. Both have a hard time admitting I’m a better shot haha.

19. What are you most afraid of?

Deathclaw packs. There was a dinosaur movie that came out a few years before the Great War called Triassic Sanctuary. In the movie, a certain type of dinosaur hunted in packs, and were hyper-intelligent. Deathclaws are like that, but ten times worse. Other than that, I hate how ferals seem to pop out of nowhere.

20. What do you normally wear?

Depends on what I’m doing. If I’m here in the Commonwealth, it’s my Vault 111 jumpsuit with my armor. If I’m back on the homestead on Spectacle Island, generally a t-shirt and jeans.

21. What is your favorite food?

Pre-war? Mom’s funeral potatoes. Now? Preston and I have got a pretty good deathclaw steak recipe figured out. Do NOT ask how long it took us to get it figured out. Or how many fusion cells we used in the process.

22. In what economic class would you put yourself?

Seriously dude? Pre-war, Nora and I were comfortably middle class. Now? I’m no Upper-Standser, but I make enough to get by well enough.

23. Do you have many friends?

Yeah, I’ve got people that I consider friends. But I’ve got more that I consider my family.

24. What is your favorite drink?

I’m a fan of cherry vanilla Nuka-cola, but it is a little scarce here in the Commonwealth these days. It was everywhere out west in the Four States Commonwealth pre-war.

25. What are your thoughts on pie?

That I haven had a legit banana creme pie in over two centuries...

26. What is your favorite place?

I love Spectacle Island. I love how it’s removed from everything, and it’s peaceful. Sanctuary has a special place in my heart, too, but it’s really difficult to stay there without Nora...

27. That makes me wonder; what was Nora like?

Oh man, where to start... The first thing I noticed when I first saw her was her smile, and how it just lit up a room. She had this infectious laugh that made me feel like I was flying. But she was tough. She was the captain of our high school’s women’s track team her junior and senior years. She was a fast, tough, and gutsy runner, which translated into how tough she was in general. But she was smart, a whole lot smarter than me. To be honest, she knew just as much about engineering from helping me get through classes on top of her law classes.

28. So is it safe to say that Piper is a lot like Nora? Do you have a type?

If by type you mean tough, compassionate women who push me to be better than I would be on my own, then yes; yes I do.

29. Where would you rather swim, the ocean or a lake?

Nothing can beat swimming in the Bear Lake on the Utah-Idaho border, especially during raspberry season. I never learned how bad it is back west...

30. Any last thoughts?

Nope, not that I can think of.

“And we’re done!” Marietta shut her notebook, signalling the end of the arduous meeting. “Congratulations, everyone, for this term. Now, let us trade gifts and dig onto that pizza. I swear to God, it’s been singing my name for the last hour.”

The teachers clapped animatedly, relieved for their two-week break, and then they served themselves each a piece of pizza from the spread by one side of the room.

Emily had spent most of the evening next to the elderly Mr. Smith, discussing his classes, programs and students, in preparation for his retirement at the end of the school year. As for Zig, he was at the opposite end of the room, fidgeting with his hands and the edges of his shirt in a clear display of nerves.

“Someone should talk with Mr. Ortega.” Mr. Smith noted, with a grave note of concern. “Look at the boy! He’s pale as a sheet!”

Emily followed his line of sight and Zig did look like if he was about to pass out at any minute. She excused herself from the elderly teacher and walked over to the Latino man.

“Hey.” She says. “Are you okay? You look ill.”

He laughed off-tone. “Me? Ill? Nope! Not at all! I feel as healthy as a horse!”

“Are you sure?” The woman presses on.

“Ms. Harper!” Marietta calls off behind her. “Take your seat, we’ll have our Secret Santa now!”

“In a moment, ma’am.” The redhead nodded.

She gave the young man a last appraising look and walked back to her chair with the rest of the English department.

“Now, since we’re all ready, we should begin.” Ms. Jones announces. “Ms. Harper, as you seem so eager, why don’t you begin?”

Blushing from being singled out, she coughs a little to prep her voice and starts the guessing game: “My Secret Santa…”

A few minutes in and the Secret Santa was in full swing, with petty trinkets, hugs and wishes for a great holiday season being traded around the room between the lecturers.

Somewhere around the middle of it, Zig had been drawn by a young Social Studies teacher who had gifted him a navy blue tie, on the fashion of those he uses every day for work.

He thanked the girl politely, albeit rather coldly, and loosened the one he was wearing to change to the one he was given.

Afterwards, the man stands up once more and clear his throat: “Er… my Secret Santa is a girl. She has red hair and is a little on the short side. She doesn’t like to be told that, but it’s the truth. She arrived to Lydia Child only this year, and it was a great surprise to me. I’ve known and respected her for so long, but it was just as long the last time I’d met her.

“The first time she ever taught was back in August, and you could see the nervousness on her eyes. I’d wager she thought the students were going to eat her.” The small joke elicit a few laughs from the audience. “But she raised above all the limitations, like we all did, and now she’s one of the most well-liked teachers in the school, and I didn’t doubt for a single minute that she would.

“I mean, y’all know, she has such a sunny disposition that only the most dedicated can manage to stay sour near her. It’s so annoying that you just can’t help to have your spirits lifted. And she’s dedicated, too! You had to see her, struggling with some math book just so she can help cover a subject I don’t even think she’s supposed to teach.

Zig sighed, a smile on his face. “If it isn’t clear enough, my Secret Santa is Emily Harper.”

Emily wiped a few tears off her eyes and ran to hug the man.

“No need to cry.” He whispers on her ear, good-humoured.

“Don’t say all those pretty things about me and ask me not to cry!” She whispers back.

He chuckled. “C’mon, you didn’t even see your present yet.”

She let him go begrudgingly. He beamed at her and handed a small, neatly packed gift. “Careful opening it. It’s fragile.”

The redhead nodded and opened slowly and carefully the shining wrapping paper. It was a copy of the book ‘Out of Africa’, by Karen Blixen.

“Zig, I…” She started to say, but was cut off by him.

“Open it.” The Latino asked of her.

The young woman obeyed, and at the first page another gasp. It was a quote and a signature.

“Le temps nous prive de beaucoup de biens précieux, et, pour finir, il nous prive de tout.

K. Blixen

København, January 15th, 1960”

“I remember you have a collection of signed copies, and that Out of Africa was one of your favourite books.” He says, with a mischievous grin. “So, I called a few people and found a used books store that had that one in stock. It’s from one of the last public appearances by Karen Blixen. It seems that the last owner of this copy knew somebody who knew somebody who scored it for him.”

Emily could do nothing but cry and hug Zig tightly.

While the party was in full swing at Lydia Child, a certain commercial airplane landed in Newark.

Inside, sat a woman in her late 60’s who was currently enjoying a flute of champagne. Her eyes were a chilly, sterile blue, framed by some age markers of someone who did not bother to hide them.

She was rather tall, especially for her age, and combined with the full, puffy blond mane on her head gave her the imposing and sophisticated look of a high-society lady.

A simple diamond necklace, the only piece of jewellery she carried, adorned her black dress. Beige pantyhose and a sensible, also black, heel covered her lean legs.

After landing and baggage reclaim, she did a beeline to the glass doors of the airport, where a fancy, yet non-descript car waited patiently for her.

“You know where we’re going.” She told the driver. “Step on it.”

A man who sat next to her on the backseat chuckled. “You’ll never change, will you, Lois?”

“What do you mean?” She demands.

“You say ‘efficient communication’, but it’s actually you being brash, demanding and indifferent.” He smirks. “Have you ever said thank you in your life?”

Lois laughs as if it was one big joke. “You’re one to tell.”

“Birds of the same feather, I suppose.” He considered. “What are you doing here, anyways?”

“I thought it was pretty obvious.” She said, turning on her cell phone.

The man smirks. “Indeed, let me rephrase. What do you expect to achieve with it?”

“I expect to recover what’s mine. And perhaps knocking some sense into that stupid, empty head.”

Sometime around 10:00 PM, Emily finally got to the entrance door of the Sterlings’ apartment, feeling ready for a good night’s sleep.

The sight she encounter at the kitchen, however, wasn’t very conductive to resting.

“Surprise!” Queenie and Nathan shout, surprising the young redhead. The two of them wore party hats and the whole room was dripping with tacky ‘happy birthday’ décor.

“I’m sorry about the ‘Feliz Cumpleaños’ theme. The store had no ‘Congratulations on your first half-versary at the job’ so we had to improvise.” Queenie said with a laughter.

“But the cake’s legit.” Nathan presented the dessert, the phrase ‘#1 Teach’ was frosted on it. “Done it myself, dark chocolate and coffee beans, hope you like it!”

“Oh my God, this is amazing! Thank you so much!” The youngest beamed and hugged her mother. “And, yeah, Nathan, I love chocolate and coffee beans. It was the cake you baked me for my birthday between Junior and Senior years.”

He laughs, sheepish. “I’m pretty sure I asked the maid to order me one, but I’m glad you liked it then and I’m glad you like it now.”

“Come on, let’s dig in!” Queenie picks up a plate and a knife, ready to carve the cake into shreds.

“No, wait. Let me at least freshen up.” Emily asks. “I’ve been on this dress all day long and I could use a pair of slippers.”

“Sure, honey. I’ll accompany you.” The mother smiled kindly and then pointed the knife at the man. “Do not dare to eat the cake before we’re back.”

He rolled his eyes. “Oh, sure, I’ll eat three kilograms of cake while you’re changing. I’ll even lick the plate clean.”

The older woman shot him a dirty look, but followed her daughter away with no further words. Nathan looked over to the decorated table and saw that Emily had forgotten to take her book bag back to her room.

He picked it up and he was going to take it there for her when a particular volume called upon his attention. It was an old, battered copy of ‘Out of Africa’. The blond took the book out to check it out in close quarters.

It was not a library issue, certainly, and it was not any of his, either. He did not remember any book boxes when Emily and Queenie moved in, so it must be a new purchase.

Opening the volume, he sees the Karen Blixen signature and wonder whether the bookseller was a moron or if Emily had the pretty penny to afford such a luxury.

It was when a small envelope falls out from the book pages. It was, by itself, nothing special, as it was white and only addressed to Emily in scrawny cursive.

Nathan checks the hallway to see if there was anyone coming. Having the coast clear, he opens the stationary.

What he reads puts him on a foul mood. It was a love letter, from Zig to Emily, asking for her forgiveness for his brash behaviour their last encounter and reiterating his intent. He was probably who gave Emily the book, in fact.

Nathan had to admit, the baboon had a few tricks up his sleeve.

Considering the letter was sealed when he found it, he assumes Emily had not found it yet, and therefore he could make it disappear. The two women were yet to emerge from the bedroom; they’d be none the wiser.

It was his first instinct, the blond had to admit. But something contained his hand, a foggy thought he could not make much sense of it, a feeling it would bring only misery if he went on with it.

He decided to put the letter back where he found it.

“Oh, there’s where I left it!” Emily exclaims, entering the kitchen.

“I was about to take it to your room.” The man handed her the bag. “What’s with the vintage copy?”

“Zig gave it to me tonight. I used to collect signed copies, and Out of Africa is one of my favourite books.” She beamed, happy.

“You used to? What happened?” The blond wondered out loud.

The redhead woman sighed. “You kept my books after we divorced.”

“No, I did not.” He shook his head. “The only books we had at home were on my study, and those were mine.”

“Do you remember the shelves by the guest room, on the third floor?” She asks, and he nods his affirmative. “Those were my collection.”

An icy chill ran through the man’s spine. He let Ashley-Amber throw them all away while she was ‘remodelling’ the house. He didn’t even think of checking what was on that particular set of shelves, he just assumed that were assorted titles of no importance other than decorative value, like every other at his parents’ houses.

Nathan had to hand it to himself; he really screwed up with Emily’s life. So much so, he should call the Guinness Book and check if they keep tally of those. He could be sitting on a world record.

Before he could say anything else, they hear a noise at the entrance door. Not dwelling much about it, them both walked out to the living room to check on it.

“Mother!” Nathan exclaims.

Standing by the doorway, Lois Sterling smirks, dangerously. “I am back.”

Remembering the Quarantine and Quarantine Fridays <3

I’ve been meaning to write about how special Quarantine Fridays were to me for a while.  I think I was holding off because I thought writing it would make me sad.  I mean--when will an opportunity to connect with friends and strangers in that particular manner happen? what up, delta?

But I think I’m in a better place to reflect on it now.  In fact, I really like reflecting on the quarantine knowing I survived it in a somewhat productive manner knowing many other people weren’t as lucky.

I’m blessed.

This is going to be a two-part post knowing that finishing school with the class of 2020 and 2021 (my juniors) really helped me make sense of my worth during those trying-ass-times.

Part One: Teacher Lyfe

March 2020

The Coronavirus was in the news since December ‘19.  However, just because the world is the way that it is, our news centered around that orange dude and whatever he said.  In fact, he continued to dominate the news until that silly little insurrection he started.

this all sounds like the old-me festering on shit that’s beyond my control that would affect my happiness and being reactive of it.  

I’m not sure when I changed but I definitely changed during the quarantine.  I honestly don’t feel the need to voice or be reactive in any way that involves people’s different values.

I think this post is an attempt to try and make sense of how and why I changed

I have so many odd memories of early quarantine.

I remember that strange feeling of turning off my alarm to wake up at 6 AM knowing that school is indefinitely suspended.  

Haha--I remember when it was a ~3-week pause in an attempt to ~flatten the curve~.

I remember feeling weird sleeping in on a Wednesday--a school night.  

It felt like Spring Break but we couldn’t really do anything so there wasn’t really anything to celebrate?   

It was somewhat exciting to not have work (and thankfully being paid when millions of people were out of jobs 🙏) those first few weeks.  

Making sense of not being able to visit my family, my best friend that lives 20 min away, or even go out to my favorite restaurants was hard for me to grasp but I learned to enjoy my solitude while keeping in contact with people via technology.

Remember Zoom happy hours and group face times?  Haha.

April 2020 I can’t imagine what it was like to have children during the early days of the pandemic.  

I can’t imagine what it was like to teach 9th grade and below during the pandemic.

How do you help kids understand the world during those trying-ass-times?

Props that all of ya’ll that did it.

I was blessed to be in the middle of teaching my juniors and seniors how to understand the world on their own terms when the quarantine began.  AP11 is a class centered around language and writing so there was always a focus on current events and making sense of it together.  The American Literature curriculum was always easy to relate to current events because, well, we’ve always been broken.  My teaching just became that much more real when we were experiencing this pandemic together.

I forget the actual logistics of how distance teaching/learning was but essentially these were the guidelines:

You can give opportunities for students to raise their grades.

You can’t diminish students’ grades for any work they do over the pandemic

There was no “set” schedule but you have to make an effort to reach out to them.

I had 3 preps for about an hour each.

1 CP11 section

1 CP12: Search for Human Potential section

AP11 was more concerned with the rhetorical analysis essay.   That was easy enough to teach.  People understood rhetoric and how to write about it pretty quickly.

Barely anyone showed up for the CP11 sections

CP12 was beautiful knowing that people that showed up genuinely wanted to make sense of the pandemic together through the existential unit I always teach.

We read Notes from Underground and The Stranger.  

It was a legit book club.

The problem was...we had weeks left before the contractual end of school.  I was out of material.

May 2020 Existentialism is related to postmodernism, the movement I was teaching to my juniors, what better opportunity to teach one of my favorite postmodern books?  White Noise.

Though that was my second to last year teaching English, it was definitely my most memorable because I was able to teach something for the sake of understanding the current climate of the world.

Mind you, this was before the vaccine, this was when we were trying our utmost best to understand how the virus operates, this was still very, very early in the pandemic.

For those unfamiliar with White Noise, it’s about a College professor who suffers from imposter syndrome and has a crippling fear of death and the unknown. All this gets accentuated when there’s a airborne toxic event that occurs in the middle of the book.   It hit home for a lot of people.  It hit home with me with imposter syndrom during my 6th year in my third English department ����.  

There were plenty of moments where I no longer felt like their teacher but a peer trying my best to make sense of the world through this book written in the ‘80s.

We found solace in the fact that people have feared death since the beginning of time.  

We found solace that all the political rhetoric concerning who’s to blame for the virus or how people are handling it may be a projection of their uncomfortabilty of the unknown or their own fear of death.  It’s easier to blame ____ than confront whatever is making us feel negative emotions.

It was liberating getting to the end of that book knowing that the pandemic still exists (in the book and in real life) but all is well.  

All is well simply because there are other things in this world to care about versus worry about.

It’s a lesson of being proactive of what you can control versus reactive of what you can’t control.

It’s a lesson that took me months to practice in my own life.

Early June 2020 I tell my students how much they mean to me in a genuine way at the end of the year.  Understanding the pandemic together was definitely something I needed in my life.

All my lessons somehow tie into the idea that school is only important if you make it important.  Sometimes that includes getting good grades and letters of recommendation to get to where you want to be.  Sometimes it means simply knowing how to interact with others to finish a group project.  Sometimes it’s getting close with a teacher knowing that he’s going through the same shit you’re going through, too.

That’s what made these students so special.  They saw I genuinely cared and genuinely gave it back through these optional class meetings we had.  

This meant the world to me when the world was standing still.  I had an alarm to wake up (10:00 AM?) so we could discuss the next chapters and it was something I genuinely looked forward to.

I learned so much from them from that silly little book I read when I was 18/19 at Orange Coast College.  Mind you, I definitely wasn’t as mature as they were at that age.  But again, we weren’t literally living a pandemic, too.

I felt like my AP11 students graduated with my CP12 students.  So much, in fact, I was pretty confused to see them on campus when we returned.  I thought they were already off doing big thangz.  

I’m proud of you all.  I’m thankful for ya’ll experiencing that with me.

I think this is an appropriate transition to talk about how special quarantine fridays were to me during trying-ass-times now that I was able to collect my thoughts on why teaching was so important during the early quarantine stages.

I don’t actually remember the actual day I attempted to livestream.  I attempted it on Instagram Live and Twitch and it was so fucking awkward.  I remember anxiously walking out in my patio to shake off the rust I had from DJ’ing.  

Damn--I simultaneously wish and not wish I recorded that set.  What on earth did I play?  Was it bad?  Or was I just nervous at randoms tuning in?  Because I remember that was definitely nervewracking

I only know this date simply from my first Quarantine Series Flyer on Instagram.  It correlates with my first instagram highlight of the initial days of the series.

It’s hard for me to remember how I got comfortable with DJ’ing in my living room for my friends and select strangers.  However, it was the biggest source of happiness during the quarantine--especially after the school year ended and my extroverted-ass didn’t have the means to connect with others through literature and bullshit about life with my students. 

I’ve had these turntables since I was 13.  I used to lug them with my Vestax 06 mixer (which I finally dropped off at good well when I moved into my new place) along with two crates of records and CD booklets of burned CDs during my early days DJ’ing.

I bought a new’ish mixer for the turntables but never really used it because I graduated from bedroom DJ a long time ago.  This was literally the first time I used the mixer heavily.

This was also the first time DJ”ing with in-ear-monitors. I’ve always been a diva about in-ear monitors.  I attempted to use them at Mesa once and hated it because I couldn't feel the music like a real DJ should when they’re catering to a crowd feeling your vibe. 💅

Slowly, I learned how to up the production of my twitch sets.  My visuals were due for an update.  I forget how long they were before #quarantinefridays but now they’re 2 hours long of just pure red thirst.  Hahaha

Quarantine Friday Highlights

Heavy Hip Hop Reflection Night

One of the special things about the Quarantine Series was knowing that I wasn’t getting paid for this and I was able to play for an audience of myself on some nights.  

I never get to play obscure 2000s hip hop anymore.  I dedicated an entire night to it when my mentor and my student’s father were reminiscing about their college days in the early 2000s.  

Here it is again for those of you that haven’t read it.

Realizing that I don’t want to be ‘90s DJ anymore

This has been a long time coming.  The first few years at Mesa were fun because I was able to bring a “classy ratchet” or “clatchet” vibes to Costa Mesa when the scene was flooded with house music.  

But damn...there came a point where I simply didn’t wanna play that shit anymore.  I avoid “Ain’t No Fun” and “Regulate” like the plague.  

This was especially true seeing other DJs on twitch playing that stuff.  As talented as they are--I feel like I outgrew that sound in the same sense I don’t listen to The Beatles or Led Zeppelin anymore.

Realizing that new hip hop isn’t that good

It was somewhere around the Future/Migos mumble rap era when I realized that this is this generation’s version of No Limit records.  Hot trash.

Then Drake, a dude that popularized being a fuckboy, became the face of hip hop.

Realizing that the shit i fuck with now is R&B

I’ve embraced this for a while in my personal life but it’s definitely dictating the type of DJ I am--so much that someone at Mesa asked me politely to play some hip hop.  I smiled and realized, “wtf am i doing?”

YO JORJA, SZA, SUMMER, H.E.R., JHENE---KEEP THAT SHIT COMING.

Realizing that I want to continue to be a pioneer in this R&B trend that paak and mars are doing right now

Funk is alive and well.  There’s even a fire playlist on spotify called Retro Pop that captures the vibe I want to have in my sets.

I gotta practice that shit more.

Bryan_black6: I helped this dude move from Dallas to Cali in December.  Pre-vaccine.  We had big plans of doing an “on-the-road” set for the quarantine series.  LITTLE DID WE KNOW WE’D ALMOST DIE IN THAT UHAUL MULTIPLE TIMES.  A lot of the R&B I’d play on twitch was reminiscent of the music we’d listen to when he’d tattoo me in his bedroom.  

Implicithero: One of the biggest compliments I got over #quarantinefridays came from Drew and Mel.  “Damn, EJ.  I knew you were good from Mesa, but I never knew your knowledge of music stretched that far.  You’re mad talented.”  I do it for ya’ll, boo 😘 Even that weird-ass-Morrissey-Emo night.  hahaha

Jonpham: I dj’d this dude’s wedding pretty recently.  Jon and I have similar mindsets where we try to stay humble but know our worth in regards to what we give back to the hip hop community.  I know I’m no scrub DJ and he knows he’s no whack bboy.  It was an honor to show you the ropes of DJ’ing and sharing some sets with you during the pandemic.  

Anditapandita: No idea how you find me but I’m glad you did!  It’s always a special feeling when I meet someone that can not only vibe to my music, but my generic silly lifestyle, too.  It was great meeting you at Mesa the other day!  I was definitely playing some #quarantinefridays hits for bits of nostalgia.

Fr4ncheesie: According to Bryan, Fr4ncheesie is my looper.  Parallel Filipino lives in different states.  It was tight getting to know you strictly through the twitch chats knowing Bryan has always wanted to link us up.  It was a pleasure dropping some classic John Legend for ya’ll.

Lordnik0n_: A former student’s father.  Prior to joining my Twitch sets, he let me know he listened to my mixtapes on Back to School Night.  It was the wildest thing ever to hear a parent listen to my ratchet/sleazy mixtapes.  I wrote an entire blog post about how special that hip hop night was so I’ll keep this brief.  Here it is once more.

Rubadubinatub: One of the only reasons I keep it real at Mesa is to please the bartending staff with what I drop.  Crabtree has always been a fan of my shit and I always try my best to throw in some Mobb Deep and Fleetwood Mac when I can.

Aimeegg: It was always fun seeing my sister and Aimee flood the chat with their own conversation.  I remember you appreciating hearing Alicia Keys’ A Woman’s Worth knowing it doesn’t get that much love these days.  but...THAT’S WHAT I DO.  I revive the forgotten but dope.

Dj_redline: Damn...It was always a crazy honor for my DJ mentor to bless his presence in my channel.  I was able to have a respectable record collection from the stuff you gave me when I was in middle school.  I was able to learn the secrets of how to buy beat junkies and ISP skratch records knowing that shit isn’t obvious.  It was the foundation I needed before I was lucky enough to be taken in by Dwenz and join Foundation FunKollective.  DJ’ing and DJ’ing my way is literally part of me because you showed me the ropes and I’ll forever be grateful.

Jen_lu: My biggest fan on the east coast!  It was so humbling to know that during the pandemic her group of friends would look forward to my sets.  They even rocked space buns showing their support!  I remember the days I had to start early because of the time difference.  Love ya’ll to death.

Mylove3169: South Bay in the houuuuuse! Damn.  It was always fun to play some classic funk for you.  Even the G-Funk brought me back to my days spinning at your parents’ front yard.  I definitely wanted to keep my shit Westcoast when you were on.  Holla!

Disrupty: A later staple of the quarantine series in 2021.  Shit was always fun to see you and mayo reminisce about back in the day knowing I missed out being part of that crew.

Alejandrooo825: My literal neighbors.  Kayla heard my patio door open during the pandemic and struck up a conversation.  I invited them over to socially distance in my patio as a proper introduction and to talk about the pandemic.  They had a squat rack five feet away from where I taught so they heard many lectures as well as shared many ratchet nights on quarantine Fridays.  The quarantine was definitely a great way to get to know ya’ll.  Definitely loved playing Mac Miller for ya’ll any chance I got.  

Snookie23: Oh man--anytime I would be able to sneak in a Freestyle set was because you and Chris wanted to groove at your place and I was happy to oblige.  Always loved to shout out Monrovia as much as I could during those late nights.

Claraamontt17: A former student that would study for her APs listening to my rebroadcasts.  If it were any other person, I’d be nervous about the shit that I play on twitch--but your taste in music is as ratchet as mine soooo 💃

Sashaaa_i: One of the last quarantine sets consisted of maddd Doja Cat because sashita put me on to it.  She even got red lights at her place to match the quarantinefriday vibes 💃💃💃

I mean no offence, but you ship a 17 year old with 1000-something year old gods, but you find it wired to ship an 18 year old with a 400 year old warlock? That sounds a little hypocritical don't you think? I love all your works, just saying.

Okay, so, there’s this thing that I call the 50 Shades of Grey Principle, because that series is the perfect way to explain it.

The main principle is that fanfiction has zero moral obligation, while published canon has very much a moral obligation to the public.

You can write as many shitty, unrealistic, BDSM-disrespecting, abusive, stalkerish, weird fanfictions as you like.

This book-series was a fanfiction too before and me and many others were unaware of its existence. Because we simply didn’t venture into the straight BDSM part of the Twilight fandom. Nowadays you’d just block certain creepy tags, you’d just filter out the ships you really do not want to see, if you by accident click onto such a bad-fic you could just filter out that author and never have to even see a glimpse of that creepy shit.

I don’t care. You do you. If you want to romantize abuse, stalking and unhealthy BDSM, that’s fine. There are a shit-ton of fanfiction in the non-con and dub-con tags that I’d simply never click on because no, thanks. They exist, they don’t bother me or others like me who don’t like them because we can avoid them.

Once it becomes a published property, you can no longer avoid it.

I walk past the movie posters, am forced to sit through the trailer, have to walk past the books in book-stores, see articles discussing it everywhere.

Now it’s no longer just a nieche fanfiction that people looking for BDSM Edward/Bella fics and who specifically want this type of story can find.

Now it’s “Mmmh, I, a normal middle aged mother, would like to see a romance film with some… spice in it. Oh, this looks interesting, let’s go see it” - and thus the moral obligations set in.

Because those middle aged mothers, those young, naive teenagers who normally do not venture into fanfiction-territory, those people are unaware of what BDSM ACTUALLY is. It’s hard to fault them for falling for this romantized abuse if they are not being made aware of the fact that it is abuse, that this is not what BDSM looks like.

We, who we read fanfiction and who we seek out BDSM fanfiction, know at least roughly what BDSM is and thus can identify unhealthy tropes. We can either decide to then avoid them, or to shrug it off and say “It’s my porn I’m reading, what do I care if it’s healthy porn?”, which is completely legit.

But as soon as it reaches farther than the borders of fanfiction, the borders of people specifically looking for This Thing, it has a moral obligation and, at the very least for me, it can be judged and should be judged for the things where I say “ship and let ship!”.

Let’s take a different example. Say there is a pairing you really hate in the fandom. You just… don’t get it. That’s fine, unless you’re a dumbass anti, you can just blacklist the tag, filter it out, not actively seek it out. You have no right to bitch and moan about this ship because you can avoid it. If now the show decides to make this very ship canon, then - you can no longer avoid it, there is no way to filter out those scenes from the show. Congratulations, you now have earned the right to bitch and moan about it.

Fandom and what is in your head are a vastly different thing from what is actually canon. Very, very often, when something is canon, it becomes unnecessarily glorified.

Take the Joker and Harley Quinn, for example. They’re canon. They’re unhealthy as can get. They were never meant to be romantized. Their creators and even actors and writers keep saying so. But since they’re canon, there’s a chunk of fandom that does romantize them and are now “looking for the Joker to my Harley”, which is just a mortifying thing to want because he literally breaks her body and mind.

And now, to get to the actual example that you sent in your ask.

For one, book!Alec is literally 17 when Magnus hits on him and it is gross, gross, gross. I’m studying to become a teacher. I spent last semester at a school to sit through classes as an assistant and actually teaching a couple classes myself. The students were 17. I’m not 400, I was 26 at the time. Just nine years their senior, but all I could see were children.

17 year olds are children. Their behavior is endearing and childish. The way they prip and preen and act like they’re super strong by talking back to the teacher just to earn the respect of their fellow students. How the boys had constant dick-meassuring contests. How the girls kept giggling in flocks.

I know every single 17 year old - or younger - reading this is currently fuming because you perceive yourself as very grown up. To which you have the right.

But if you’re actually older, if you literally go from attending college classes to sitting through high school classes as a teacher, you can see it.

The thought that any adult ever could see a 17 year old as anything but a child is gross and disgusting and just so very, very wrong.

So the thought that a 400 year old immortal looks at a 17 year old and thinks “Mmm, yummy” is just really twisted. Because we’re not talking about 40. We’re talking about four hundred. It’s just insane that such a matured and sophisticated being would look at a half-child and think “I should totally hit on that”.

In a published medium. Because for many it feels like a justification. It is now morally okay. It is being romantized in this published medium and it then gives people the false sense of this being morally right. Makes 17 year olds and younger feel like that’s an appropriate age to be persuit by adults, because oh, it’s in this book/movie/show and they make it look romantic, so if it’s majorly published and wildly accepted, then it has to okay.

I ship Percy with all the gods. I take disgusted offense in Leo and Calypso being canon, because he’s a child and she’s a millennia old immortal.

I write teacher/student fics. I literally nearly puked during Riverdale when Archie’s teacher seduces and thus rapes him.

I wrote a shit-ton of purposefully unhealthy BDSM fics because those were literally just meant to be porn. I spent hours that sum up to days by now ranting and raging against 50 Shades of Abuse.

There is a fundamental difference if something is done on the internet, on a platform where it will be found only by like-minded people, people who are more likely to actually grasp and fully understand the medium, or if it is a canon thing that will be shoved down the throats of unwilling participants.

In fanfiction, people who already think that those two characters who might have a very questionable age difference would be a cute couple, will be able to find content to exactly those, while the people who do not agree can (in theory, though antis seem fascinatingly immune to the concept) just blacklist tags and not venture into those corners of the fandom.

I don’t like Loki and Thor as a ship, it’s a hard no ship for me. I have the tags blacklisted and literally have to never-ever read anything about them or look at them. I don’t judge people who do ship them, I’m just… blissfully unaware of them because I literally am not confronted with any kind of content about them. That would change drastically if Marvel suddenly decided to make them canon.

I have blacklisted and filtered out the Magnus and Alec relationship tag, the Leo and Calypso relationship tag, for examples. I do not ever have to look at any GIFs, fanarts, fanfiction or general posts about them. When I read Heroes of Olympus because I liked the characters and wanted to know how it ends, I had no option of just filtering out the Leo and Calypso story. Now that I’m reading The Mortal Instruments, I can not just filter out the scenes where the centuries old warlock is hitting on the 17 year old Shadowhunter.

Because that’s not how books, TV shows or movies work.

That’s how the internet and fandom life work.

And that is what makes the difference.

Now, I really do hope I brought my point across and you might understand why I hold canon shipping and fanon shipping to two vastly different standards?

Time of Your Life

Pairing: Harry Holland x Protagonist (brief, planned), Tom Holland x Protagonist (main, planned) 

Synopsis: Jacob Batalon’s youngest cousin (Protagonist) is now -- as of August -- 18 years old. At the nearly-ripe age of 17, she accompanied her cousin to the Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere where she grows acquainted with the younger crowd of the star-studded cast and -- most importantly -- piques the interest of two Holland boys, Harry (who’s the same age) and Tom (who’s three years her senior). 

Author’s Note: There's some Tagalog in this fic because I’ve always wondered how in-touch Jacob is with his Filipinx roots. I saw a few of his instagram posts and watched a few interviews where he mentions some tidbits of family life, so that’s how I figured I would forge a connection between the protagonist and Tom, here. Don’t worry, though. There’re translations!

Part I: Girl, Persuaded   In which the protagonist of this story – Maja – is persuaded by her older cousin, Jacob Batalon, to attend one of the biggest events of his life.

"I don't even know why you're thinking of taking me, kuya (older male cousin)" I complained. Mom and Dad were staring at me with disapproving eyes as my voice shifted from its natural pitch to something more irritating, like my ilong (nose). "Kuya, you know that I hate flying and you know I should be doing my summer reading by then. I'm still reeling from rejection and I don't think I'll have the composure, nor the spirit to go with you to the premiere."

"Aroooooyyy,” (interjection of shock) Mom whispered into Dad’s ear from across the living room. She was mumbling in Tagalog, but from the little snippets I heard, I could piece together her shock over me not taking my pinsan’s (cousin) offer.

“You’ve known that you were the one I wanted to take for the longest time,” Kuya stressed over the phone. “You and Ate Nicky’s husband were the only ones who knew from the beginning and you don’t want to go now?”

“Kuya, I—”

“I can’t take Kuya Jerome, he’s in the military!” normally, Jacob was the king of equanimity, but this was due. I was pulling bullshit on him, unapologetically. “It’s the same day as prom,” I murmured, with a melancholic drop in my voice. “I’m in ASB and Alicia’s on the prom committee. I helped review the finances for that, and it’s the first time we’re ever going to have prom Downtown. El Cortez.”

“You don’t even have a date, though, Ading! (younger female cousin)” There was a pause, and the crackling sound over the phone was enough to convey Jacob’s remorse for being so frustrated. He didn’t just insult me, he rubbed salt and lemon juice into a wound I was recovering from. Just two days ago, they boy I had a crush on tantalizingly allowed for a rumour to go around that he was going to ask me to prom, but then was caught chatting with his two football friends – Adam and Joey – about how annoying and embarrassing it would be to hang out with my friends.

“They’re all, like, weird.” My friend Sam had overheard their conversation in class and reported that Jake – the boy I liked – said that during lunch. After a few more minutes, I contemplated hanging up on Jacob. I figured that he was a hilarious actor and he told me about a few upcoming projects, so there would be more premieres to go to. However, he managed to persuade me right as my finger slid up to the “END” button.

“Ading  – Maja…” he said my name with such a tropical ease, and without the severity of the Tagalog tongue: “Mah-huhhhh,” and not “Mah-HAH.”

“What?” I snapped.

“You’ve already been Downtown loads of times. Comic-Con was there, and we went to a party at the El Cortez with Tom and Harrison and them,” he had a point. I had already experienced the El Cortez at its prime – there was an Entertainment Weekly after party there for the conclusion of SDCC. However, I wasn’t allowed on the balcony because I was (1) underage, and (2) not famous. Jacob hadn’t generated enough star-power to get me in yet, and it seemed like he was already intoxicated when I got to the shindig.

“Of course, Jacob. You enjoyed it, so I enjoyed it, too,” I wasn’t trying to be sardonic, I swear. I was just really irritated. “I didn’t even have a good time! You got me a pass for Sunday and you didn’t even let me see your panel!”

“Hey, hey, hey,” he protested. “Don’t be like that, don’t pull that shit. You mean a lot to me and I wanted you out of all people to accompany me. Not even my mom and sister. I know it’s prom night and all that, but c’mon. Weigh one unique opportunity over another. Do you wanna see that Jake kid dancing with some other person or do you wanna see this Jake kid on the big screen alongside some of the coolest people on the planet?”

“I-I…” the whole history of my cousins’ and my relationship flashed before me. We had way older siblings that could never relate to us, and since we were a mere three years apart, we ended up dragging each other on various escapades. Could I dare let him down during one of the biggest moments in his life, and one of the most formative periods of mine?

Not really. I remembered that Spider-Man: Homecoming was a coming-of-age movie and that I owed it to myself to conclude my adolescence with something ballsy and unexpected. After a few devastating blows – Jake being the most trivial, a few college rejections being the most brutal – I didn’t deserve to have a sucky time at Prom, where all I’d do is peer off the ledge and watch the cars drive by while everyone else was grinding on each other. No, I was going to Los Angeles as my movie star cousin’s date to the premiere of the summer’s hottest movie.

“Fair point, kuya,” I conceded. “Fine, I’ll go. You’re freakin’ lucky my dumbass legit thought Jake was going to fucking ask me and I bought a dress.”

“Helllllaaaaaa,” he was doing the shaka with his free hand, wherever he was calling from. “What color’s the dress? We’ll match.”

“White,” I said.

“Cool, that’ll match with anything. I’ll text you the details.”

And with that, Jacob and I said our goodbyes. My spatial recognition came back to me and I realized I’d made it from the living room downstairs to my bedroom upstairs. I chucked the phone on my bed and heard the “thud” as it hit my firm mattress. Thoughts and emotions meandered through my head and my heart, as the more I thought about how I would prepare myself, the more I could hear my heart beating and my hands shaking. I could’ve fainted.

Of all the things to think about, though, a prevailing and underlying memory flashed across my mind: famous people sort of already knew who I was, of my existence. There was a possibility that Jacob and them already talked about who they’d bring to the event, and since Jacob was meticulous and strategic about this, there was a high chance that the cast of the movie would anticipate my presence – well, at least the younger ones. Or they’d pay me no mind.

20 THOUGHTS: Bugger

FAR too many assumed we’d be having the biggest grand final in over 30 years this time last week 

Half-time Friday night we all thought we’d got it wrong but alas regular programming prevailed and they then expected Saturday to be the breezier of the two prelims .

Yeah nah.

Now we have third playing sixth in a Grand Final no-one saw pre-season, mid-season, to start the finals or even last week when it was a one in four chance.

Expect the unexpected they say. And they are usually right on that.

 1.       Tigers just win, by five goals plus. As soon as that siren went Saturday, and thousands of male Collingwood supporters suddenly sprouted innies, thousands of Richmond fans grew really firmly in the trouser knowing it was only the expansion kids ahead of them next week now. Giants have won two games by under a kick in the dying minutes, once lucky, twice you’re kidding yourself, three times though, yeah nah.

2.       Actually, lets knock out some Brownlow before getting back to the on field. Interesting year, probably the greatest field of live chances going in for some time. So much analysis available these days that someone out there will get it right but about a dozen others, whilst looking super schmick with their spreadsheets and formulas, will be way off. This column has no idea although liked Fyfe for a while. Gets 2 or 3 votes in each Dockers win. Nice platform.

3.       Otherwise, three randoms to watch – Boak, Yeo and Treloar, could easily podium. And a real smokey from the clouds? James Worpel. One for the exotics.

4.       Back to on field, let’s go back to Friday. Cats missed a Scott Selwood type in the midfield. Getting ahead was one thing, and they did that well to their credit. But when it got tough in the second half, when the Tigs were coming, they lacked grunt and determination like the Giants showed in the final term Saturday, to get the job done. And to be honest its plagued them since the bye too. Can look flashy, can score, but when it needs to get ugly for 15-20 mins, think back to the first half of the first final too, no dice. Kinda like when its past 2am on a Bucks night, usually phantom, usually pass out, usually Ryan Babel.

5.       Alrighty, Saturday. Yikes. Wet weather clearly didn’t favour the Pies. No excuse but it mattered. Why? Well would you like to know who trained in a down pour midweek? The Giants, in their main session. Probably the best training session in that football history given the conditions that eventuated.

6.       So – and thanks to Rohan Connolly for this, who I’m shamelessly stealing from – between 2008 and 2015 only one Qualifying Final winner of 18 lost a prelim final. The last four years where we’ve had a pre-Finals bye, it’s a 4-4 record. Look at the Pies, didn’t turn up until three quarter time, the Tigers at least turned up after half time. Plus last year, the Pies had no right in their matchup with the Tiges and jumped them something shocking in that first half. Might be something to it. Might not be wrong, but there’s something to it.

7.       If you look at the Pies, Tigers and Giants, on balance this all looks about right. Richmond since 2017 probably deserve at least one flag and a go this weekend at a second. The Giants these last four years probably deserve a Grand Final appearance for their body of work. And Collingwood these last 18 months, a toss of the coin Grand Final result probably sits about right for them too.

8.       Difference between Richmond and Collingwood? One covered their injuries a lot better and was better set up for the pointy end as a result. Injuries aren’t the reason the Pies lost Saturday or that they would have been underdogs to Richmond had they won, but it’s the reason Richmond has a better list and is likely to win a second flag in three. Case in point – Richmond’s reserves win the Grand Final a week before their Seniors probably win as well, the Collingwood reserves didn’t even make the VFL Finals.

9.       Bucks getting questioned a bit in the media, ‘oh, that’s 22 years now without a flag, ho hum indeed’. Relax. On that basis we should give Bob Skilton a call, interrupt his midday movie to let him know despite his three Brownlows and everything else he means to South, his Hall of Fame Legend status is getting revoked coz he never won a flag. And that his spot will be taken by Tom Barrass instead, because he has actually won one. That Buckley hasn’t got a flag isn’t news, it might be factual but its not a story. The idea that obviously would clearly yearn for one is also factual, but not a story. Please be serious.

10.   Matt De Boer was excellent on Saturday but then again the Collingwood mids weren’t requiring a tag to be kept quiet. Does he got to Dusty and try and ruffle him again like he successfully achieved last time in Sydney? Won’t matter, Martin goes forward and kicks four on him in that case. Whether Martin gets shut down in the midfield by De Boer or not won’t prevent a Tigers’ flag anyway, lets not bother about that discussion all week.

11.   Norm Smith tip – no Tiger is in better nick than Shane Edwards, otherwise Bachar Houli for a little value with you preferred corporate bookmaker. But Titch onball will be as dangerous for Leon Cameron as nailing your Tinder date in Bali. You better put a clamp on that otherwise you’re in big trouble.

12.   Marlion Pickett was BOG in the VFL GF yesterday. We know that the Tigs have held over Jack Ross and Kamdyn McIntosh in lieu of the incredibly-stiff Jack Graham being doubtful to get up for Saturday. But back on May 28th we said this lad, who was playing for South Fremantle four months ago “would be best 22 by year’s end”. We’ve left it late but whilst McIntosh might be the safer play, Dimma will go very close to debuting the Western-Australian in the hope his mercurial style might just be perfect for an occasion like Saturday. If he’s picked, remember where you heard it first. Or read it first, even.

13.   Presume Kevin Sheedy is on standby to present the cup to Phil Davis and Leon Cameron should the Giants salute, the link to Richmond notwithstanding. The GWS best and fairest is the Kevin Sheedy medal, and unless you’re looking to Chad Cornes or Izzy Folau it has to be Sheeds. On the Tigers side, I think about Dale Weightman, otherwise Matty Knights or even Chris Newman if you want to go more recent.

14.   So yes, Richmond has been the pick for a while and it remains the pick. They are beatable though. Last four games their opponents all had strong chances they didn’t take. Eagles down here, in the wet, stuffed it and lost by a kick. Brisbane the week after got spooked but did a lot right but too late. First final, Brissy again, they kick straight they’re in it up to their eyeballs and then Geelong was leading by 21 points at half time, kick straighter its over five goals and the Tigs are staring down a repeat of last year. They’re not invincible, but it was only ever going to be a hot Essendon or hot Collingwood who stood a chance this finals series. Yet the Bombers lasted as long in September as Saturday Night Rove and then the Pies made a mess of it like The Veronicas on a Qantas flight.

15.   This column gets it right far more often than most and has banged on about the Clarkson-assistants theory for some time. This week’s Grand Final coaches, both ex-Hawthorn assistants. It will mean that after this weekend the last seven premierships will have been coached by Al Clarkson or one of his ex-assistants. Incredible. By this column, that is.

16.   More people in Sydney watched the Giants on free to air Saturday afternoon than people in Melbourne watched the Storm on free to air that night. What do we make of that?

 I love Victorian footy as much as the next Ted Whitten. This column still lapses occasionally and refers to Fitzroy instead of Brisbane, and it’s only been 20+ years. And whilst this column’s position on the Gold Coast experiment is well documented, the idea of a team in Western Sydney has always made sense to me. The population out there alone is more than Perth, Adelaide and Geelong combined.

 So to see GWS successful, largely on their own merit now (Gold Coast with the same concessions stuffed it, and you didn’t see Toby Greene playing on Saturday did we), is a good thing for the comp. Leave Gold Coast and Tassie aside, mind you.

17.   Speaking of Victorian footy, can we just kick the AFL reserves team out of the VFL into a legit reserves comp, and let Williamstown and Port Melbourne and Werribee actualy duke it out for a proper VFL title? Williamstown are long-storied VFA club who were looking for their 15th flag in 155 years of history. They lost to a team who sat out two of their players because they might be needed this coming weekend in a different comp. Don’t like it. Split the AFL reserves from the VFL. And the SANFL…

18.   Great to see Glenelg, another historic club in this country, win its first flag in 33 years. And yes they were playing Port Adelaide, their biggest rival, but half the opposition Sunday were Port Adelaide’s reserves, not SANFL players, so it’s a similar story. Great for the Bays to get up, but let the SANFL Magpies be just that, and then Port and the Crows can have separate reserves teams playing reserves footy.

19.   Speaking of Williamstown, feel for Willie Wheeler. Just a knockabout VFL footballer who had the win on his boot twice in the last term, so to lose by under a kick is devastating.

20.   Still not bothered by trade chatter. It’s all glorified brainstorming and suggestion permeating from the Herald Sun lunch room. When something remotely close to an actual story emerges I’ll get interested. Until then I’ll pass on Ralphy and Sammy and Jay-Z getting far too eggplant about what boils down to guesswork or stuff they dreamt about the night before when their partner slept at her friend’s house once again.

The Fosters: Our Thoughts on Episode 4x19 “Who Knows”

It’s time for another twin recap of The Fosters, featuring me (not in italics) on general plot and adoption related things and @tarajean621​ (in italics) on Jesus and brain injury representation.

What Was This Letter Doing in Your Pocket?  Nothing!  You know, Jesus just was telling Brandon what a good brother he was, so Brandon reciprocated and Jesus thought better of frisking him…  (Also, it’s so horrifying that now, Brandon, Grandma, Mariana and Moms all know about Emma’s abortion, but Jesus still does not…)

Are You Gonna Tell Jesus?/I Think...That’s Our Choice?/I Think So:  I hate that Jesus is being left out of this discussion, but what else is new?

That’s My Department.  What Should I Look For?/I Would Say a Hardwood Tree, Right?/Yeah, Like an Oak or a Walnut: So, I love that this project is a thing.  But I hate that it is still Jesus’s fake senior project.  I am glad that we can still hear that aphasia impacts Jesus’s speech.  (I also noticed his prism glasses in his hand - not being worn despite one of the moms saying that he would have to wear them for a bit longer.  And while some disabled people do not need or use their glasses/braces/crutches/canes/wheelchairs 24/7, it seems that in this episode, the glasses and cane are nothing but a visual reminder for the audience.  They exist as little more than set dressing.)

Also, we get to see how Gabe interacts with Jesus post-injury for the first time.  And while Jesus stumbling over words seems to make Gabe momentarily uncomfortable, he is able to keep the conversation going and not make it a huge deal.

Isabella, This Is Gabe/You’ve Never Met Her?  How heartbreaking, seeing Jesus and Mariana’s reaction to Ana and Gabe with Isabella.  And hearing Ana talk about dropping her off at daycare when the twins know how they were treated by her as babies?  It’s all in their eyes as they look at each other.  Mariana can’t even hang around after that intro.

Have You Gotten Any Help From a Doctor?/They Put You on Pills...Screw You Up More/Yeah, I See That:  Totally a valid choice, Gabe.  Not ideal for Jesus to hear, though.

Makeunder:  Callie is not having these people tell her what to do with her hair, her body, her face.

Does It Ever Make You Feel Bad?  Seeing Ana With Isabella?  How Good of a Mom She is to Her?/No, I Don’t Think About It:  I’m so glad that Mariana feels like she can talk to Jesus about these feelings, and contrary to what Jesus says here, his face tells a whole different story.  It has since they saw Gabe, Ana and Isabella together...seems like, maybe he can’t think about it, or it will hurt too much.

Do You Remember Ana Leaving Us Alone in Our Crib When We Were Babies?  For a Whole Day or More?/Yeah...I Had a Dream About It.  We Were in Our Crib and You Were Crying.  I Was Trying to Take Care of You:  How devastating.  As much as this is so horrible for both of them I am so glad they have each other to talk to about it with.  That they believe each other.  They know what happened because they both remember it.  

She Never Should Have Had Us/Is That What You Would Have Done?  If You Were Gabe - Would You Tell Ana to Get An Abortion?/No.  I Would’ve Been a Dad: It struck me last night how Noah’s Jesus really is a completely different character than the first Jesus.  Because in season one, he was all about getting that morning after pill for Lexi.  Maybe that’s because now the writers can portray Jesus the way they always intended to.  I’m not really sure.  But I do really find this statement by Jesus in this scene to fit with the way he is now.  Very tender, quiet, and driven to do what’s right.  Especially after having that conversation with Gabe in season 3 about how Gabe did tell Ana to abort the twins when she was pregnant, and how terribly that sat with Jesus.

So, We Let Her Off The Hook?/They Are Not Us and It Does Us No Good to Get Mad at Them:  This is such a twin thing.  Mariana is so upset at Ana abandoning them (as she should be.  They deserved to be taken care of.)  And Jesus is on the other end of the spectrum where it seems he’s trying to put distance between himself and that time because he knows it can’t be changed.

Twins do tend to try to balance each other out, I’ve found.

Nobody Ever Gave Me Nothin’ for It.  Now I Got the Power:  This reminds me of Jack in season 3, telling Jude and Callie that he had the power after those boys broke his arm.  :(  It seems like Diamond almost HAS to rationalize this as being okay, because it likely feels like her only option.  

It Really Wasn’t His Choice/True.  But We’re Adopted, So Maybe You Could Have Considered That:  I adored this conversation between Emma and Mariana.  I love the honesty.  How Mariana didn’t hesitate to tell Emma how Jesus felt about it but also acknowledged that it wasn’t his choice.  It also felt really accurate that she would talk about how she and Jesus are adopted and how that’s also a valid option.

You Sure You Should Be Lifting Stuff?/Yeah, I’m Fine.  It’s Good for Me to Move Around:  The thing about brain injuries and disability in general is that you’re always contending with your limitations.  And those limitations can shift and change day to day, depending on any number of things.  With the visual disturbance plotline pretty much gone, it follows that Jesus probably does feel markedly better than he has.    

What Are We Doing?/We’re Moving My Stuff In/Why?/Should I Call Your Mom?  And this is why it is not advised to go off medication without a doctor’s knowledge and supervision.  Yes, Gabe, please do call Lena.  (Also, notice Jesus’s speech being impacted by not feeling well.) 

I Can’t Have Sex When I Take My Meds/Well Maybe That’s Okay?  For Now?  Until You Get Off Them?  To recap: Felbamate is a last-resort anti-convulsant with dangerous side effects.  Impotence is not one of said side effects.  Also?  I cannot find any research that supports the arbitrary 5-years-on-anti-convulsants thing.

We Are Going to Allow You to Drive With Callie to Folsom:  We, a police officer and an assistant principal are allowing our 18 year old son and 17 year old daughter to DRIVE TO FOLSOM PRISON TOGETHER.  What is happening right now?

And I can’t help but entertain the thought that perhaps in Lena’s mind, the impotence might be a blessing in disguise - a way of controlling Jesus?  Which is such a gross thought, but the truth is that many disabled girls and women undergo forced sterilization as a matter of convenience even today.  Is keeping Jesus on Felbamate despite his objections due to a convenient “side effect” so different? 

Your Brain’s Not Right/MY Brain’s Not Right?!  You’re So Depressed, You Got Evicted!  Maybe YOU Should Take YOUR Meds!  Oh my. ��I know this seems most unfair, Jesus.  And it is.

I Had a Job Lined Up in Tahoe/Maybe You Should Go!  I’m Sure It’s Still Available!/We’ll Talk About This Later: I have to say, as far as adults go, Gabe is actually doing quite well avoiding the whole ableism thing so far.  Just the fact that he does not dismiss Jesus’s anger as a “TBI outburst,” and lets him know that they will talk later is huge in light of how the family has been treating him in past episodes.  

I Don’t Wanna Live Like This/Don’t Say That.  You’re Gonna Get Better:  There definitely is such an adjustment to life with a brain injury - and depression is often a part of that.  And while I appreciate that Brandon is trying to make Jesus feel better, telling him that he will “get better” is harmful in the long run.  While Jesus will definitely make improvements, he will not return to who he was pre-injury.  The promise of this is false hope.  (I mean, this is TV, so a “miraculous recovery” might still happen.  But in real life?  Please avoid the phrase.  “You’re going to improve, but I respect your limitations.” holds the same sentiment.  And it’s okay to be different post-injury.  Life happens.  We evolve.

You Can Talk to Your Doctor.  They Can Put You on Something Else.  Or Give You Something/What?  Like Viagra?  Like I’m an Old Man?  Why is Brandon, of all people, having this conversation with Jesus?  This is a conversation Lena should have had with him when she found out he was not taking his medication.

What About Emma?  Everybody Knows She’s Not With Me For My Mind.  Our Thing, It’s Physical/Jesus, There’s Nothing Wrong With Your Mind.  You Have a TBI - But You’re Funny, Smart and a Really Good Guy.  She Has to Love You for All That:  Brandon, you and I have a love-hate relationship.  And lets be real, it’s mostly hate.  But this?  This was the perfect thing to say.  “There is nothing wrong with your mind.  You have a TBI.”  Please get this engraved on a plaque and place it in the kitchen for all to see.

Oh My God, Kyle.  Did You Kill Her/What If I Did?  This scene.  Adam Irigoyen’s complete transformation as Kyle is just amazing and chilling.

You Used Me/YOU Used ME/For What?/For a Cause.  To Feel Good About Yourself:  I love this so much.  I love that Kyle is knowledgeable.  I love that he knew, from the start, that he was also being used.  I hate that feeling.  While I obviously don’t condone murder or theft, I do like the reveal that Kyle was aware the entire time of the bigger picture.  That he isn’t just the sweet ‘special needs’ boy that Callie perceived him to be.  He is fully aware and he always has been.  This scene was easily my favorite part of the episode.  What amazing acting.  What a stunning reveal.

I Never Did That/Jesus Remembers, Too/I Don’t See How You Could Remember Something Like That When You Were Babies/We Remember Because We Were Scared and Hungry and Our Diapers Were Full.  We Were Covered In Our Own--:  And runner up for my favorite scene is this one with Mariana and Ana in therapy.  I was just thinking how much I hoped we would see some kind of through-line with this.  I’ve  been wondering how Mari’s coping with her PTSD.

The tweets in Mariana’s secret Twitter account were revealing in that sense because we get to see that she’s still scared.  She’s still dealing with things, and obviously she’s been trying to process this memory of her and Jesus as babies for several weeks.  

I like that this kind of thing was included because it is fairly common from what I’ve read that kids who’ve known severe abuse or neglect do have memories from the time they’re babies of their experiences of those things.  And they’re doubly difficult to process because as babies, Jesus and Mariana were preverbal.  They didn’t have the vocabulary to articulate how they were feeling.  Which is why it’s so good that Mariana’s able to start working it through now, and figuring out how it did make her feel.

Is It Possible, Ana, That You Don’t Remember If You Were Using Drugs?/I Didn’t Come Here to Be Judged or Ambushed by Memories That She Dreamt Up.  I’m Not Doing This:  I also really loved the realism in Ana’s reaction.  It feels so viscerally true that she, as a mom, and especially with a baby now, to be super defensive and dismissive of the idea that she did neglect Mariana and Jesus so thoroughly.  And it is complicated by the fact that she was using at the time so she very well might have zero memories of things she did and/or times that she left them alone.  

I feel so much for Mariana, though, and I do hope that her therapist helps her process what happened in the office, so that she can start to realize Ana’s reaction is about Ana and it doesn’t make Mariana and Jesus’s memories of what happened any less valid.

Before Your Daughter Gets on the Stand With That Story.  Check That Out:  Yeah, Stef, Callie’s story of getting Doug Harvey’s toothbrush out of the trash isn’t really gonna stand up in court when Gray has video evidence of her in his house taking it from there.

We Can Still Do Stuff, You Know, For You?/Hell Yeah:  I’m glad Jesus and Emma are still working on their relationship and trying to figure things out.  (Check out the cane standing next to his bed.)

Did You Hear About Anchor Beach?  There’s a Rumor They’re Turning It Into a Private School/ Where Did You Hear That?/Some Anonymous Twitter Account.  I have a hard time believing that Emma would not check out the anonymous Twitter before sharing it with Jesus.  The very first thing Jesus did was check out the handle and the tweets.  And now, he knows.  Finally.  Oh crap.

53. which social media platform are you most like yourself on: Tumblr in terms of personality I suppose, but since I try to not post everything about my life on here there are a lot of things missing that don’t really come through. I’d say facebook simply because almost everything about me is uploaded on there, by one person or another. I’ve had my facebook since I was in 7th grade, so it’s really documents my life almost. I’m not really into any other social media other than those two. So in conclusion, tumblr in terms of personality, facebook in terms of being able to open up more about my life.

54. What are some of your passions: I am in love with the brain. I think that it is akin to the deep ocean or the universe - there are so many things we do not understand about it. It also houses our personality, every thought, memory, emotion. Every little nuance that makes us human. Yet it really is just a collection of water, lipids, proteins, and neurotransmitters, yet somehow in all of that we have developed a complex sense of self. Are our personalities really separate entities, or are they just a complex construct that our advanced brains have superimposed to make sense of the chaotic word that we live in??? Basically I want to research some sort of neuroscience/biopsychology related field. 

I also love genetics for similar reasons… I find it fascinating that some sort of elemental coding for our functioning lives inside us. 

I’ve also found a new passion for writing as of late :)

In this article, we’ll look at the non-conference schedule and there are some several quality opponents on it. While you may initially look at it and think this isn’t the best schedule, there’s a lot of upper echelon teams from mid-major conferences that Auburn will face this season. The Eagles, led by Head Coach Mark Byington, return 3 of their top 4 scorers from last season. The Eagles averaged 82.6 points a game last season which was 15th best in America last season. To compare with Auburn, they averaged 79.7 last season. This should be a solid opening night game for Auburn.

What a cool spectacle this will be! This game will be held on the campus of the Naval Academy at the start of Veterans Day Weekend.

KenPom has them quite a bit lower than the preseason polls as they are the 6th team in the Receiving Votes portion of the AP Poll. I saw a Davidson game last year in person and was extremely impressed with 6’10” forward Luka Brajkovic. The Austrian native will be a terrific early season test for Auburn’s bigs.

In addition, Kellan Grady and Iceland native Jon Axel Gudmundsson, both 1st Team Preseason All A-10 players return this season. In addition to the match-up between Brajkovic and Wiley, I’m looking forward to seeing how guys like Samir Doughty and Isaac Okoro match-up against Grady.

The Head Coach of the Wildcats is Bob McKillop, who enters his 31st season at Davidson. Davidson truly recruits worldwide as their roster is made up of players from 7 different countries. This will be Davidson’s season opener and with the Wildcats one of the teams Receiving Votes in the Preseason Top 25, this would be a great Week 1 win for Auburn.

While Auburn played South Alabama last year and won 101-58, I expect this game to be much different as Richie Riley has put a solid roster together, including multiple transfers from Power 5 schools and the Jaguars look like they can contend in the Sun Belt this season.

The Matadors are coached by former Alabama Head Coach Mark Gottfried. The Matadors look to improve in Year 2 of Gottfried’s tenure in Northridge. Lamine Diane was 6th in the nation last year in scoring at 24.8 points per game as a freshman. Only Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy averaged more points a game as a freshman last season.

Their leading scorer, Jordan Burns, scored 32 against the Vols in a 77-70 season ending loss. To get to the NCAA Tournament, Burns scored 35 points against Bucknell in the Patriot League Championship.

They are hoping that Head Coach Paul Weir, who came over from in-state rival New Mexico State a couple years ago, can finally restore the Lobos program. The Lobos will get a boost finally getting JaQuan Lyle eligible, a transfer from Ohio State. Bragg started his career at Kansas and moved on to Arizona State before finally landing in Albuquerque last season. There’s some talent on this Lobos roster and they’re hoping to find their way back to the NCAA Tournament as they haven’t been since the 2013-2014 season.

As for Auburn, this was the best regular season game from J’Von McCormick as he led Auburn with 14 points. Like Furman, Lipscomb was also a mid-major who looked to claim an at-large bid up until the very end of the season. But the Bisons lost to Liberty at home in their conference title game and thus ended up in the NIT. They won a trio of games on the road, including at Davidson and at N.C. State, to make it to the Final Four of the NIT. Casey Alexander, their coach, moved up the street to coach Belmont and Garrison Matthews, who averaged 20.6 points per game is now in the NBA. All together, the Bisons lost 5 of their 6 top scorers from last year’s team.

The Bisons hired longtime University of Alabama-Huntsville coach Lennie Acuff to take over for Alexander. Living in Nashville now, I hope to see some of Lipscomb before they come to Auburn in late December.

First Month in IB World School - Kolej Mara Banting

(Nice guess, but I’m not at New Zealand) Before I start my long rant, I just wanna apologise beforehand with the weird format that I typed my blog with because my laptop decided to be a huge B and won’t connect to my internet. Hence, I’m currently typing this thing on my phone! Not a problem, but it’s annoying the hell out of me haha let’s just move on before I stray away from the topic 🍇 First and foremost! OMG GUYS I SURVIVED ONE MONTH IN KMB WITHOUT ANY MAJOR THINGS OR DRAMA HAPPENED (well few mini episodes but nothing grand that’s cinematic worthy, but oh well moving onnnnn) I, believe it or not, survived the first month without ANY sorts of homesickness, or even any illness (HAH to the doctor that said I need an antibody injection, I. Survived. Without. Getting. Sick.) Of course, the first impression towards KMb was nothing short of a shock. Low-key (I meant high key) regretting for rejecting UNIMAS because I was expecting a UNI life, you know. I want to FEEL LIKE AN ADULT, but lmao guess who gets to be in a classroom and having teachers instead of lecturers and have to greet the teachers every time they come in? (Suck it up, Niqa. It’s called IB world SCHOOL for a reason. It lives up to it’s name.) So yeah, the life that I’m living right now is NOTHING like the fantasies that I used to have about University life. Nothing. Big shout out to Niqa because she never fails to disappoint herself! Woohoo! We have our class from 8 till 3.30, sometimes up till 4.30 if we have some extra remedial or meeting up with the teachers, but I usually just stay at the academic block until 5.30 (because I’m a good girl 🙃 lah sangat) and everything here is pretty much scheduled. So, to say that we don’t have a life, is correct. Like I said, NOTHING like what I imagined uni life is all about. 🍇 Even thooooough, the life here is, lmao to be blunt, extraordinarily lame, but I wasn’t joking when I said I really like it here, and I think one of the main reason (I honestly think it’s the only reason, but lmao let’s pretend I didn’t type that out) that I really like it here in KMB is, the people. The seniors, my batch mate, the teachers (they’re actually lecturers but I honestly have no idea why they insisted on us addressing them as teachers), the staffs, mak cik DS, pak cik guard, and literally everybody else are so amazing. They’re very kind and genuine that it makes me feel so loved and accepted here. It’s weird how so far away I am from where I’m from, but I feel so ‘belonged’ here. And I honestly guess that’s the main reason why I didn’t get any sort of homesickness. Though this place is NOTHING like home, but it feels like a home to me. Their kindness was quite overwhelming in the first place and I was soooo awkward because I’m not used to it and I legit had no idea how to react towards such kindness, but then, slowly I learnt that it comes from the heart. Everything comes from the heart. If the kindness that you received comes from within, then make sure to repay from the within too. It’s so different, (lmao it’s like langit and bumi, honestly) from the people that I died to associate myself with back in Green Road, (I LOVE YOU LITTLE DAREDEVILS AND SATANS WITH ALL MY HEART I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH AND I MISS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU DEVILS) and I thought that it would very hard for me to ‘fit in’, but how wrong I was. I still remember during the first day of orientation and how I was in TOTAL DISTRESSED because my MARA agreement was apparently incomplete, two of my batch mates came up to me, sat next to me , and just talked to me like I'm one of their friends, and I've never felt more grateful before because it was like the beginning of how my perception changed towards these people. Everyone is just so accepting. It’s partly because how the seniors and the teachers never fail to remind us every time during orientation days, about how we are all now back to zero. Nada. Kosong. And we’re all starting from the same starting point so there really is no one ahead or no one got left behind. We’re a team. Not competitors, and I just really like that concept and how it changes the perceptions that I have towards this people. They didn’t get the upper hands just because they’re from boarding school, they’re just like me, chasing after the same goal. And instead of a huge stampede and massacre, we’re holding hands, and making sure that no one gets left behind, while reaching for the end goal, together. 🍇 Secondly, the culture that they’ve nurtured here thoughhhhhh. Holy cow, I’m so amazed. Can you believe that thievery is unheard of, here in KMB? You can literally just leave your phone anywhere and leave your laptop at the middle of concourse, come back to take it few hours later, and it will still be there, untouched. The people here really respect each other’s stuff and of course, very disciplined and I’m just so amazed. Wow, I’m a part of these people now? Phew, Niqa. You’re amazing. (Let me have this moment, guys. I want to puji diri too) and cases of hysteria is so rare. Wait, if I’m not mistaken, it never happened here before? Like, can you believe that? A college. I heard so many ghost stories of different college that I was kinda scared entering this so called dorm life but lmao I literally have nothing to be scared of. I love how we just sit together every night and recite Ma'thurat in the morning at the surau before class, recite Al Mulk together at night, the solat jemaah, Quran in group sessions. Everything is just so rare for a common student like me from a commoner school. Like wow? No wonder budak mrsm sbp so amazing? What was I doing with my whole 18 years of life? Sleeping while living? I felt so left behind in everything, but then again, like I said, everyone here is so amazing you hardly feel the huge gap that we have.
