The End of Civilization

Fifteen years have passed since I began spending a third of each month at my beachside house in Okinawa. I till the field and I ponder new ideas for creating things. In the intervals, I go down to the beach in front of my house to walk the dog and get a change of air. Such is my routine, but every time I go down, I am filled with a mixture of anger and sadness. Walking on the sandy beach, I enjoy picking up beautiful shells or pieces of coral, but more than shells and coral, what I find are large quantities of trash that has washed ashore. Sometimes, to my delight, I happen on an old glass float. But mostly, what I find is ugly plastic debris ... pieces of styrene foam, plastic bottle caps, detergent receptacles, cheap toys, and so on. Some of this trash is Japanese and some has drifted ashore from other Asian countries. Whenever I find it, I pick it up, but the next day I find more. Eventually I came up with the idea of collecting all this trash, sorting it by color, and creating something with it. I wanted people to know—so much trash washes ashore, I can fabricate things with it. The other day, when traveling, I had a chance to visit the beach at Yonaguni. While walking in the sand, I had the oddest feeling something was not right. Thrusting my hand into the sand, I scooped some up to inspect it and got a shock. Mixed in with the sand were countless particles of plastic, about the same size as the sand grains. It looked like a beautiful beach from afar, but this is what it had become. We human beings had done this. It was the end of civilization ... the thought struck me with real force. Although not Japanese, I have lived here more than 40 years. I remember Japan when it was still beautiful. If I can, I hope to live in this country the rest of my life. Which is why I want everyone to know—that Japan has gotten this dirty, that we need to clean up this trash, and how important it is to live without producing trash. This is an issue not only for Japan. It is something I would like to tell the whole world. As everyone perhaps knows, there is trash we can see and trash we cannot see. If either continues to grow, it will mean the end of civilization. The earth is also working hard to clean itself, but our collective efforts as individuals can go a long way towards cleaning up the environment. If I can do something to make people aware of this, now is the time to act. This, I feel strongly. Simply showing people all that ugly plastic trash may not get them to understand its actual horror. If so, then I will create something I think is beautiful, not just beautiful objects but something practical, able to serve people usefully once again. This is but a small act of resistance on my part, as someone who creates things for a living. To draw people’s attention to the great volumes of plastic trash. I consider this my last job in life.

You moved back and forward on the pillow trying to pleasure yourself but it wasn’t seeming to work. You continued but faster this time. Nothing seemed to be working. You went slower but it didn’t feel right. The pillow was boring and you needed something else. You heard someone cough. You turned around suddenly. Embarrassed massively you turned back and fell forward to lay on your stomach. “Don’t be embarrassed, baby.” He walked over to you as you laid down. Tate sat down next to you. You moved your hand to see him. He stared at you with a smile. You sat up and leant over to him on the bed. The smile on his face did not fade. You looked into his eyes. “Sit on my lap.” You hesitated but eventually sat on his lap. The bed creaked as you moved. Tate raised his hand to move the hair out of your face. He kissed you and then leant back slightly. You moved back and forth on his lap. Tate groaned, obviously aroused. You moaned in his ear and he started to move in sync with you. He groaned quietly as his boner nearly stuck into you. You went faster on him. Tate bit his lip and leant closer to you. Your body was still moving back and forth as he leant closer. You moaned loudly at him. Suddenly you cummed and he could tell you did. You moaned loudly as he was still moving back and forth. His erection was nearly inside of you but yours and his trousers were in the way. You stood up. “I can’t. I’m a virgin.” He sighed at you. Tate grabbed your waist with his big hands. He licked his lips. “It’s okay we don’t have to do it.” You leant over to Tate and kissed him.

Pohybovali jste se na polštáři dopředu a dozadu ve snaze udělat si radost, ale zdálo se, že to nefungovalo. Pokračoval jsi, ale tentokrát rychleji. Zdálo se, že nic nefunguje. Šel jsi pomaleji, ale nezdálo se ti to. Polštář byl nudný a potřebujete něco jiného. Slyšel jsi někoho kašlat. Najednou ses otočil. V rozpacích jsi se otočil a padl dopředu a lehl si na břicho. "Nestyď se, zlato." Šel k tobě, když jsi ležel. Tate se posadil vedle tebe. Pohnul jsi rukou, abys ho viděl. Zíral na tebe s úsměvem. Posadila jsi se a naklonila se k němu na postel. Úsměv na jeho tváři nezmizel. Díval ses mu do očí. "Posaď se mi na klín." Zaváhal jsi, ale nakonec si mu sedl na klín. Postel vrzala, jak jste se stěhovali. Tate zvedl ruku, aby ti odhrnul vlasy z obličeje. Políbil tě a pak se lehce naklonil. Pohyboval ses na jeho klíně tam a zpět. Tate zasténal, očividně vzrušený. Zasténal jsi mu do ucha a on se začal pohybovat synchronizovaně s tebou. Tiše zasténal, když se jeho kost do tebe málem zabodla. Šel jsi na něj rychleji. Tate se kousl do rtu a naklonil se k tobě blíž. Vaše tělo se stále pohybovalo tam a zpět, když se naklonil blíž. Hlasitě jsi na něj zasténala. Najednou jsi cumla a on mohl říct, že ano. Hlasitě jsi sténal, když se stále pohyboval tam a zpět. Jeho erekce byla skoro uvnitř tebe, ale tvoje a jeho kalhoty mu překážely. Vstal jsi. "Nemohu. Jsem panic." Povzdechl si. Tate tě chytil za pas svými velkými rukama. Olízl si rty. "To je v pořádku, nemusíme to dělat." Naklonil ses k Tateovi a políbil ho.

Jonny’s Summer 2023 Guitar Pedalboard

With Radiohead, Jonny is known for very slowly adding pedals to his setup. While Ed often has half a dozen new pedals for a new album tour, Jonny often adds only one (such as his Headrush in 2000 or his Freeze in 2012). And when Jonny swaps out a pedal for a similar one (like one tremolo for another tremolo), it’s usually only when his old pedals are too worn out for touring (such as his original Whammy WH1 and vintage RE-201 Space Echos). One might think Jonny keeps the old pedals around because, since Kid A, he’s often playing other instruments. However, at live shows Jonny is still happy to replicate some recorded sounds on guitar, whether it be the filtered samples on Feral (using volume pedal, Whammy, and phaser) or the col lengo strings on Burn The Witch (using Whammy, overdrive, and a cello bow). It’s clear he enjoys getting the most out of those pedals in that specific arrangement.

But with The Smile, Jonny has been swapping in new pedals pretty regularly. In 2022, Jonny was experimenting constantly, sometimes adding new pedals for only a couple of days before swapping in a replacement. He quickly eschewed some of the Radiohead-favorites heard during the earliest Smile streams, such as his Small Stone, Tremulator, and OD3. In their place came flangers, compressors, and expression pedals: types of pedals he’d never used with Radiohead.

However, it seems like Jonny found a setup he was fairly happy with by the end of the fall 2022 tour. His latest live board is quite similar to the one used during March 2023 recording sessions for the band's upcoming second album, but even so there are a couple surprises!

Jonny previously used a Peterson StroboStomp HD with his Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 on the Smile's 2022 tour. But this is the first time he’s been seen with one on his guitar board. It replaces the Boss TU2 he’s used since the earliest Smile shows.

The Telenordia Treble Booster is borrowed from Thom. The Telenordia is still marked with Thom’s guitar settings, from when he used it on You Will Never Work In Television Again during December 2021 rehearsals.

On Radiohead tours since OK Computer, Jonny has always brought a Vox AC30 — an amplifier well-known for its low and mid gain sounds. With an AC30, Jonny can get different flavors of overdrive by balancing between clipping from the pedal (using the pedal’s gain control) and clipping from the amp (using the pedal’s volume/boost control). And of course, he’d use his separate Shredmaster+Eighty-Five chain for heavy distortion on older songs.

But on tour with the Smile, Jonny has been using a Fender ’65 Reissue Super Reverb, an amp with much more headroom than the Vox thanks to a combination of higher wattage and negative feedback. As a result, we hear the overdrive pedal’s sound more clearly — the Boss SD1’s mid-rangy sound is especially noticeable on live versions of Thin Thing. So it makes sense that even Jonny would want to experiment with multiple dirt pedals for different flavors.

Jonny was first seen using an MXR Dyna Comp in a rehearsal photo, most likely taken when preparing for the fall 2022 tour (despite being posted in 2023). Thom and Ed have both previously used the pedal as well. Thom toured with a Dyna Comp only briefly before switching to his current Telenordia Kompressor. So it's interesting that Jonny first toured with a Kompressor (last year), but has gone the other way and switched to a Dyna Comp.

For those curious about the rhythmic delay setting marked on Jonny’s Akai Headrush E2, check out behind-the-scenes photos from The Smile’s Tiny Desk show. However, so far we’ve still only heard the pedal used as a looper.

Placing his Boss RE-202 after his Headrush allows Jonny to add ambient effects to his loops, as he does during the live outro of Skirting On The Surface.

Jonny first used a Strymon Iridium at a performance of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint at the Hidden Notes festival on September 25, 2022. For that show, it replaced his amp. But with the Smile, he’s using it as a backup for his Super Reverb.

Dneska mám svůj rozhodně nejhorší večer. Všichni jsou úplně hotoví. Vůbec nechápu, proč jsme si to udělali. Zpětně to byla fakt velká blbost. Všechno mě bolí. Prvních 20 mil bylo v pohodě, pak si moje tělo řeklo, že už má dost, a poslední tři bylo obrovské utrpení.

Vstávám a mám na quiltu rosu. Říkám si, že to přehodím přes sedadlo vedle mě a dosuším to. Nedošlo mi, že na kožené sedačce je taky rosa. Takže jsem to ještě zhoršil. No nic, usuším to po cestě.

Vyrážím v pět ráno zase. Bude horko, tak snad tomu co nejvíc uteču. Cesta je celkem pohodová, už nás až do Kennedy Meadows nečekají žádné vysoké kopce. Tak si tak bezstarostně jdu, když v tom na mě někdo křičí. Prý jestli jsem neztratil klobouk po cestě. Spíš ne, říkám, ale mrknu se na batoh. A fakt že jo! Není tam. Tak jsem se shledal s kloboukem, který jsem ani nepostrádal. Bez něho bych se upekl úplně.

Je dost horko, ale dneska je naštěstí všude voda, takže netahám víc než litr. Do dvanácti mám za sebou 17 mil. Našli jsme si fakt krásné místo na obědovou siestu. Je tu stín a chládek. Do cíle to máme už jen 3 míle, takže pohodička. Sedíme a kecáme, čtu si knihu, suším quilt. Odpočíváme.

Pak někdo vymyslí, že bychom mohli ujít trochu víc. Dává to smysl. Máme ještě celé odpoledne, na našem původním místě není voda ani stín, bude tam dost foukat a takhle si polepšíme na další dny. Tak jsme všichni pro. Ale to byla ta osudová chyba!

I když jsme počkali až do čtyř a horko trochu ustoupilo, tak nás všechny těch 7 mil naprosto zničilo. Poprvé za celou dobu ani nemám chuť k jídlu. Nejradši bych si lehl a čekal na smrt. Je mi hrozně. Přemůžu se a sním dokonce dvě večeře. Mám moc jídla a dneska to potřebuju. Chtěl jsem spát bez stanu, ale je tu tolik komárů, že nakonec stejně musím stavět svůj zelený domeček. Snad to za noc přejde, protože teď je chůze to polední, co bych chtěl ráno dělat.
