These are all the things I want to grow and have the seeds for this year, though some things are missing from this list. I still need more soil, most of the produce goes to the senior center so if anyone wants to throw me 3 dollars for a bag of dirt it goes to a good cause, I also save seeds and distribute them to neighbors and some of the people at the senior center. This blog is my only income source as I am an unpaid live-in aide for an elderly woman. No pressure though. Echinacea is a genus of ten species native to eastern and central North America but now grown world-wide as a garden ornamental, wherever the climate will allow. It’s famous for attracting butterflies and bumblebees to your garden. Both of these specimens are probably members of the hybrid ‘Sombrero’ series (’Lemon Yellow’ and ‘Hot Coral’).

These advanced hybrids are genetically unstable and often won’t breed true from seeds you might collect from this year’s flowers. April 2021: A Shipment Arrived

My queen ordered some plants from Rare Roots. First off, we’ve ordered plants online before but these are some of the healthiest & best packed plants we’ve received to date: 

On the left are two ‘Sombrero Lemon Yellow Improved’ coneflowers. The other five plants are ‘Purple Rain Strain’ Jacob’s Ladder. The Jacob’s Ladder is the perfect combination of my queen’s love of gardening & Prince:  

Our baptisia bed. We haven’t figured out why the yellow is more robust than the purple. That’s odd because, normally, plants with a naturally dark blossom out perform varieties with lighter blossoms. You’ll see the same dichotomy between solid leafed & variegated plant varieties with the solids being hardier. We’re hoping the additional sunlight from our neighbors taking down their pine trees might help the purple baptisia: 

I mentioned here that we were expecting an overnight low of 37 last night (It actually went down to 36) so I covered the tomato plants that we had in the ground already. Well, here is the fancy covering... newspaper draped over each individual plant & an old plastic shower curtain covering the whole works with random yard junk used to weigh it down: 

I have yet to identify these beetles but they love blossoms. Here they are on one of our chive blossoms but they were on our Shasta daisies last year:

I went to the town that Beach City from Steven Universe is based off of (Ocean City, Maryland). From the few days I was there, here are things I noticed, native plants, and native animals to help you in your SU writing and art.

Things to remember:

-The huge American flag over Annapolis

-The way the walls look more overgrown the further into Maryland you travel

-The pseudo- Appalachian Mountains on the eastern part of the mainland, where the almost-solidified fog collects on the bottom. It looks like a god blowing his air over that land. Or in this case, a goddess.

-The overwhelming trees once you get to Riva Road

-The taste of the Severn River before you hit the Bay Bridge for the full course meal

-As you get closer and closer to the coastline, the trees become a little pointier, but are so packed with dense leaves that at first, it looks blunter or even softer

-The way the Bay Bridge sweeps and turns to then look like a spitting image of a suspension bridge. The support hard then flood and flicker by as you pass by.

-Stevensville alone would make Steven laugh.

-Past Stevensville, the houses start to be occupied less and less by pickup trucks and more and more by skiffs boasting the American flag, beech fences striding the coastal-toned houses.

-Starting in Kent Narrows, the skiffs grow to an almost unbearable level. Entire houses and businesses, entire townhouse complexes are built on stilts over the water. Stretches of marsh grass sweeps over the remnants of the Bay.

-Hotels for Beach City start to be advertised as close as Grasonville.

-Queen Anne's lace grows next to Queen Anne Highway.

-There are actually a few casinos in Beach City, and they're advertised on Queen Anne Highway's billboards.

-Pseudo farms dot all of Delmarva, but they look more like grass than anything.

-The second half of Delmarva, excepting Salisbury, is when it starts to get surprisingly rural. Farmlands are common. This fact was made evident in the AU where Jasper died before Spinel.

-In Denton, falcons love to make their colossal nests up in the big space at the top of the power lines, which extend farther than the eye can see.

-Even though it's in Delaware, Adams' Fruit Market is the BEST place to get farm-fresh food.

-Close to Beach City, the trees get thinner and slant slightly to the right. The billboards grow relentless about twenty minutes away.

-Most of the street vendors close to Beach City sell alchol, accompanied by more run-down farms than the rest of the area.

In terms of housing, very little of it is permanent. Entire communities come thrusting into town at the beginning of the tourism season, with those same entireties evacuating at the end of it. In terms of housing style, if these homes are not in these gated communities, then they are beach condos. Almost every house costs about the same (unless it is a beachfront condo with the same quality as an average gated-community condo), and almost every house is a coastal shade- anything else would be denoting some level or another of outright poverty.

Often, the best place to eat will start with the town name and end in "diner". Don't let the traffic throw you off- they cycle through them faster than anything. And you can never go wrong with pizza.

During the wintertime, one of the most common things to do is play crack the whip on one of Ocean City's many small lakes.

Native plants: -Black Adders- The little purple snapdragon thingies -Tango- The smaller orange snapdragon thingies -Amsonia- The little half creeping-phlox, half-bushes. -Trumpet Creeper- The red, daylily looking things -Turtlehead- The white, yellow, bell-shaped flowers you always see -Coneflowers -Wild, baby-purple geraniums aren't TOO common, but for the purpose of sensory things, they're perfect -Lemon Queen- The little yellow flowers you see next to the amsoniae Native animals: -The dolphins you see are called Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins. -Oystercatchers -Buffleheads -Goldeneyes -And, of course, rays and skates, the difference being skates tend to be thinner and are harmless, while a ray ended Steve Irwin'
