What Is and Isn't a Fish: a List
A list of the animals I discussed in my fish essay, but for those who don't want to scroll through paragraphs of text to find out if an animal is or isn't a fish. Just CTRL+F your way through here!
I'll add onto here more animals whenever I get asked about them being fish. See my fish essay here!
Some notes before you proceed:
Yes, all tetrapods are fish! We are phylogenetically fish, as we are and our ancestors were lobe-finned fish! "Fish" in the phylogenetic sense is a paraphyletic group if you try to exclude tetrapods, so it is frankly impossible.
How come tetrapods aren't listed as fish then? Long answer, read my essay. Short answer, me and other fish accounts tend to operate on the morphological definition of fish, so does most of the world. Here I use the morphological definition of "fish".

You’ve always loved turtles. If you’re truly pressed to say why, you would probably say that what you like about them most is the intermediate space they take up. Between land and water. Between soft and hard. Between big and small. They really do it all.
It doesn’t hurt that turtles are super cute.
So when your soulmark came in as an orange turtle on your bicep, you were beyond ecstatic. There is debate about the soulmark symbols and what they mean, but you hoped that meant your soulmate would share your same interest.
There’s really only one career choice for you.
When Channel 6 approaches you about doing a story on your turtle rescue, you are surprised to learn that reporter April O’Neil is going to be the lead. She’s an amazing investigative journalist, not known for this kind of fluff piece.
You understand when you meet her for the first time. She’s as obsessed with turtles as you are. You almost forget it’s an interview as the two of you chat and chat.
Despite the easy rapport you and April have, you are surprised when she contacts you after the piece runs. All she would say is that some people want to thank you in person, can you meet up with her? The mystery has you intrigued, so you agree.
You are not expecting four giant turtles and their rat father. Once you apologize for being rude and they insist it’s fine, open-mouthed staring is the most minor reaction they can think of, they thank you sincerely for your help with their “kinda, sorta brothers???” as the orange-banded one put it. It seems that when they saw the story your passion for your work moved them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Out of this unusual meeting friendship is born.
You, Mikey, and Raph hit it off immediately. They often sneak off during patrol to come help you with your turtle rescue, much to Leo’s chagrin. He can’t really be mad at them though, they are a huge help to you. You have employees and volunteers, but none of them can understand the turtles you rescue like the guys can.
It’s one such night when you realize that friendship isn’t the only thing on your mind when you think of Mikey.
The two of you are passing in the outdoor enclosure, him with a box of his “little bros” in hand, when you trip on a rock. Without even looking at you, he reaches out, catches you with one arm and a “Woah there angelcakes!” and spins to set you back on your feet. He turns and continues on his way, cooing down at the baby turtles in the box.
You, meanwhile, are frozen in place. The way he just… did that, as if it was the easiest thing in the world. Just casually picked you up with one arm and put you back down, as if you weighed no more than a feather. The way he acted like it was normal, reminding you that he is not. The way his scales felt, cool through your shirt. Paradoxically the thought lit a fire in you.
It’s a little harder, interacting with Mikey after that. Every touch causes your heart to stutter, and Mikey likes to touch you a lot. He throws his arm around your shoulder and ruffles your hair. When you are able to successfully rehabilitate a particularly ornery softshell turtle, he picks you up in a hug and spins you around, nearly causing you to faint from the sensation.
And he’s so sweet, especially to the turtles in your care. Your heart swells three sizes whenever you see him handle the turtles with such care, as if they are made of hopes and dreams instead of shells and teeth. He doesn’t even mind when they draw his blood, simply laughing and apologizing for scaring them. Even you curse at them for biting sometimes, on your worst days.
He’s a little too perfect, and sometimes when you think of him you find your hand on your bicep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are thinking of him while you and Raph are building an additional enclosure for a leopard tortoise that isn’t playing well with the others. You feel an itch in your bicep, possibly psychosomatic but annoying nonetheless. You push up your sleeve with the hammer in your hand and scratch at your soulmark with it while you line up the next nail.
“The fuck is that?”
You look up at Raph and blink. That was pretty abrupt, even for him. You follow his gaze to your bicep. “My soulmark?”
A kaleidoscope of emotions flash across his face, too quick to follow. He settles on exasperation. “That’s your soulmark? ‘Nd you never thought to, I dunno, talk to him?”
“Talk to who?”
Raph throws his hands in the air and stalks off. You hear a mutter that sounds suspiciously like “made for each other” as you watch him go.
Part of you wants to follow, to figure out what’s going on, but you really don’t want to have to wrestle this lumber you’re nailing back into place. It took long enough the first time. So you turn back to the task at hand, trying not to get distracted while you hammer the nail in.
It doesn’t take long for Raph to come back, his protesting little brother in tow. He comes up to where you are bandaging your finger after hitting it with the hammer and grabs you as well. He sits the two of you down on the pile of lumber.
“Bro, wha-” Mikey cuts himself off, staring as Raph lifts your sleeve and reveals your soulmark to him.
Raph steps away, letting your sleeve fall back into place, then points between you. “Talk.” He stalks off once again.
You turn to Mikey, hoping he can shed some light on what’s going on. He’s still staring at your bicep, a little slack-jawed. You wave your hand in front of his face, and his gaze snaps up to your face. He starts fumbling with the bracelets around his arm.
When he manages to push them off his wrist to reveal the matching orange turtle, it’s your turn to gape at his arm. You’re moving before you really process everything, and he meets you in the middle for a searing kiss.
“That’s not talking!” Raph’s annoyed yell comes from the other end of the enclosure. You and Mikey pull away simultaneously and start to laugh.

What's each of your MCs third favorite reptiles? Also, any Parental figures favorite non dairy milk
-@wolfsbaneandotherfunactivities
Wow, what a question. EACH of my MCs? I guess we're cooking with gas now, baybe
.
Izjik’s third favorite reptile is the cottonmouth. It used to be higher, but then she got bit. As a parental figure, her favorite non-dairy milk is alcohol.
Sepo’s third favorite reptile (it's just cannon that they've all discussed this now) is a blue-tailed skink. He likes seeing them around when he goes on walks. As another parental figure to Twenari, his favorite non-dairy milk is oat milk, but he still doesn't like it much.
Twenari would have a list of her favorite reptiles, and third is the Atlas Day Gecko. First is the Gharial. She probably has a list for every class of animal.
Djek’s third favorite reptile is the cane toad. He has definitely tried licking one.
Astra's third favorite reptile is the softshell turtle. Snappers are her favorite. I think all of her favorite reptiles are turtles, actually.
Mashal's third favorite reptile is the sand boa. He rates them on how fun they are to draw.
Ivander would under no normal circumstances have a favorite lizard, but for this, I'll go with eyelash viper.
Elsind's third favorite reptile is the humble leopard gecko. I really have no reason for this one.
And I guess Avymere's third favorite reptile is the green anole. They love a good model organism.
.
Thanks for the ask!

Since the last known female Yangtze Softshell Turtle has died I thought I should share some other species that are on the brink
Northern White Rhinos

the last male northern white rhino died in march of 2018
Amur Leopards

reportedly there are only 84 amur leopards in the wild
Vaquita (the gulf porpoise)

there are 22 vaquita porpoise in the gulf of california. doing a simple image search of these guys will leave you horrified.
South China Tiger

south china tigers are considered “functionally extinct” because they haven’t been spotted in the wild in years
Cross River Gorillas

cross river gorillas are critically endangered, reportedly there only being around 250 in the wild
Red Wolves

how common, right? wrong. once thought to be extinct, but brought back through a captive breeding program, 130 red wolves were released into the wild. In 2018 that number was reduced to 40.
the extinction mass is growing and we need to spread awareness

Nerding Out Over Masting, or Why Unusual Plant Reproduction Excites Animal Ecologists
As for many people, every pandemic month that passes marks another month since I’ve been able to travel. I realized recently that this is the longest time I’ve gone without getting on a plane since about the 5th grade (my parents divorced and lived in different states), and the longest I’ve gone without leaving the country since 2004. One reason I became an ecologist is because the work afforded me the opportunity to travel as part of my job, and that aspect is one of the main things I love about my work. For many tropical ecologists, the pandemic has marked a year of lost opportunities to travel to our field sites. Though my ongoing projects will survive this missed year of data, I miss the forest, and have spent many hours remembering all the things that made me fall in love with tropical field work in the first place.

Figure 1. Seedlings at Danum Valley, Sabah, Malaysia, October 2019.
One of my favorite forest phenomena is masting. Trees in the family Dipterocarpacae dominate SE Asian rainforests. These are the world’s tallest rainforest trees, reaching more than 90 meters in height, and they reproduce by masting, which are irregular fruiting events. In northern Borneo, there is no set wet or dry season; rain falls year-round but there are sporadic dry periods that vary from year to year. Thus, there is no regular spring/flowering season like we have here in the US. Instead, the Dipterocarps reproduce in masting events, usually following strong droughts. The reason animal ecologists get excited by these masting events is because during these periods the forest seems to explode with life. The first time I went to one of my field sites (Danum Valley) was during a masting event (2010), and I had no idea how rare and special it was. I thought that it was normal to see two clouded leopards eating a mouse deer, or to see orangutans pretty much every day, or to have elephants tip over your car while you’re out surveying frogs (true story!). In the following years, I realized how incredible it was to have been there at that time. I was a little sad that my chances of seeing another masting event were low, but I got lucky again in 2019 when I spent a month at Danum during its most recent masting year.
As a herpetologist, I admit that I don’t fully appreciate all of the botanical intricacies of masting. But the most visually noticeable thing about a masting event is that it makes the forest look as though someone has planted thousands and thousands of seedlings all over the forest floor. This is incredibly striking because much of the forest doesn’t normally have a lot of undergrowth, but rather widely spaced giant trees. It would be like seeing the redwood forest with seedlings blanketing the forest floor. I have a ridiculous number of pictures of both the forest floor and individual seeds and seedlings in an enormous variety of shape and size, and will gladly bore anyone willing to look at them.

Figure 2. Borneo short python (Python breitensteini), caecilian (Ichthyophis sp.), and palm civet (Paradoxurus philippensis).
As I mentioned above, masting events also bring out heaps of animals that I don’t often otherwise see. In my first week, while setting up an introduction to electro-fishing for my students, we saw an orangutan about 30 meters away. He then came down to the forest floor, crossed the stream a little ways up from us, and walked off into the forest on the other side. Later that afternoon as I was setting up the exercise on a different stream, a lizard known as a water monitor (Varanus) was swimming downstream toward us, got spooked up onto shore by our presence, and ran right into the mouth of a concealed king cobra--!! While we couldn’t see the cobra’s full body, we clearly saw its unmistakable head scales as it was pulling the Varanus back into its hiding spot, and heard the incredible growl that cobras let out when they don’t want to be bothered. The rest of the month saw numerous species of snakes, a giant softshell turtle, my 4th ever caecilian (a limbless amphibian), mom and baby civets (a small carnivorous mammal), and in keeping with the field session’s mission, awesome frog data collected together with my students. While these animals are always present in the forest, masting events seem to bring them out in force, making all of them much easier to see.
As we start 2021, I am cautiously hoping that this year will see us all getting vaccinated, making travel safe once again. I hope to return to Borneo for more incredible encounters alongside my regular data collection, to better understand the incredible forest that hooked me into tropical field ecology in the first place.
Jennifer Sheridan is Assistant Curator in the Section of Amphibians and Reptiles at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences and knowledge gained from working at the museum.

snakeybones replied to your post “found a listing on Etsy for a R.ed-eared S.lider, and though i hadn’t...”
...Ugh, the first one isn't even a red eared slider. I hate when things are mismarked lol It's actually some species of softshell turtle. As for the other skull that you recieved, it's definitely a gecko skull, but I'm not certain on a species. How big is it?
oh, man, now i’m kinda embarrassed cause i totally thought it was a slider but now that i’m looking at pictures of the two kinds of skulls side by side you’re TOTALLY right sliders have lil snubby noses and this guy has a droopy softshell nose. which STILL would have been fine by me cause i’ve been looking for a softshell too but now im just really concerned about where this seller is getting their ‘turtles’ if they’re mixing things up so badly.
the gecko is about an inch and a half in length - the reason i’m guessing tokay gecko is because it looks to me to be too short-nosed to be a leopard gecko?

Top 10 most widely traded animals in the Golden Triangle identified in new report
Large casinos, hotels, shopping malls and markets flourish in Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle — the area where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge. These gambling halls and markets, known to be centers of prostitution and drug trafficking, have now emerged as hubs of wildlife trade.
Meet the top 10 most widely traded animals in the Golden Triangle:
1. Tiger: Tigers — both poached from the wild and captively farmed — are favorites in the Golden Triangle. Nearly every part of the tiger is on sale there, the report notes, either in the form of traditional medicine or as decoration, tiger wine or meat.
2. Elephant: Again, the survey teams found almost every part of elephant on sale in the region, including elephant teeth, hair, bones, tails, trunks, and ivory. Even elephant skin was available for consumption in restaurants as a cure for stomach ailments, the authors write. While much of the elephant ivory is thought to be smuggled from Africa, elephants in Myanmar are being poached, then skinned, to meet the demands of elephant skin.
3. Pangolin: Chinese and Vietnamese tourists in the Golden Triangle seek out pangolin meat, considered a delicacy, as well as pangolin scales, which are used in traditional medicine. International trade in all eight species of pangolins — four African and four Asian — is prohibited under international law.
4. Rhino: Most rhino products in the Golden Triangle are believed to have been smuggled from Africa. Rhino horns are, again, popular in traditional medicine, and are also bought as a symbol of wealth, particularly in Vietnam, according to the report.
5. Bear: The Golden Triangle region is home to bear farms, where bile is extracted from species like the Asiatic Black Bear and the Malaysian Sun Bear. The bile from their gall bladders is used in traditional medicine, and the bears’ paws are used to make soup. Many of these bear farms likely house bears that have been illegally captured from the wild, the report says.
6. Serow: The goat-like serow that lives in remote mountains across Asia is yet another commonly traded animal in the Golden Triangle’s markets. The survey teams found serow horns, skulls, forelegs, heads, gallbladders and medicinal oil on sale. The animal’s parts are especially prized in Laos traditional medicines.
7. Helmeted hornbill: This critically endangered bird has a solid bill casque that is extremely prized in China, where carved casques are used an ivory substitute. Chinese demand for these casques have led to a drastic decline in helmeted hornbill numbers, the report notes, especially in Indonesia.
8. Gaur: This wild species of cattle is being poached mostly for its majestic horns. Surveys of the markets of the Golden triangle revealed horns, gallbladders for medical purposes and whole heads as trophies, according to the report.
9. Leopard: Leopard products in the markets of the Golden Triangle range from entire skins to heads sold as trophy. The origin of these leopard parts are, however, difficult to pinpoint, the report says. Among the leopards on sale, the teams found that clouded leopards were being traded in particularly high numbers.
10. Turtle: The survey teams found numerous turtles and tortoises in the markets of the Golden Triangle being sold as live animals, decorative items and food. Some turtles on display included softshell turtles, Asian box turtles and impressed tortoises.

From on the job with The Nature Conservancy. #Repost @nature_illinois (@get_repost) ・・・ #Emiquon is home to hundreds of thousands of migratory and resident birds, including American bald eagles and white pelicans and numerous species of ducks, geese, herons, egrets and shore birds. Mammals include river otters, muskrats, beavers, mink and short-tailed weasels. Grassland birds such as Henslow’s and grasshopper sparrows, eastern bluebirds, orioles and migrating warblers can be seen in the prairie on the western side of the preserve. Reptiles such as prairie king and western ribbon snakes; snapping and softshell turtles; and plains leopard, northern cricket and green frogs can also be found.
