Obviously, JD Vance's proposal to give parents additional votes stirred up a furor from progressives saying it's anti-feminist, reactionary, trying to keep women in the kitcen, etc.

And I agree with them. Frankly I wouldn't shed a single tear if Trump "who will rid me of this meddlesome running mate"-d a second VP in a row and I never had to hear from Vance or his 2010!NRx ideas ever again. But I have a more prosaic objection also: if implemented, I don't think this plan would actually work?

Like, as I understand it, there are two proposed justifications for how this might be a good idea, but I don't think either of them stand up to scrutiny.

The first (and less plausible) one is, people who selfishly want more votes will have more children in order to get more political leverage for [whatever they want]. Even though they're doing it for selfish reasons, children are a public good, and so on net this is good for society.

I think this theory can be dispensed with pretty easily. It sounds just like one of those $1000 payments for having another child that budges the birth rate not at all because it's way too small a reward for the expense involved. Even speaking as someone intensely annoyed by trendy anti-electoralist cynicism, I know the EV of an additional vote is microscopic compared to the expense of having children. It won't move anyone except at the very bleeding edge of the margin.

But that's the easy case. The much more interesting theory of the Vance Plan is that of fixing broken incentives. The story goes like this: one feature of democracy, for better or worse, is that it rewards those who show up. If you have no vote (or don't use your vote), you are invisible to democracy, so your wants will be systematically underrepresented. This is why wealthy first-world countries are increasingly gerontocratic in both legislative makeup and resulting policy: old people reliably vote, young people don't, so even with no conspiracy involved, democracy gravitates to favoring the wants of the old. Vance says, hey, children cannot vote, so just as you'd predict, their interests (as a class!) get ignored, so we end up with a legislative landscape that doesn't favor children and makes it harder to raise them.

It makes perfect sense on paper! But I think in the real world it falls apart.

What are the actual bits of legislation and policy which discourage people from having more children? I mean, people can and do argue furiously over this question, but IMO three of the most significant ones are:

NIMBY localist housing policy locking young potential parents out of the housing market

More localist tax and education policy making competition for "good schools" a Red Queen Race which drives up house prices still further, requiring two working parents

Safetyist legislation which, while well-intentioned, is making everything from cars to child care more expensive than it necessarily needs to be

In order to believe that giving parents additional votes will cause a more child-friendly society to emerge via electoral pressure, you have to believe that parents are more likely than non-parents to oppose 1, 2 and 3. And that just... doesn't seem true? At best there's no difference, and to be blunt, I think as a class parents tend to be worse than non-parents on all three. #NotAllParents, of course, there are plenty of people with kids who still want good abundance policy, but averaged over everybody I think it's hard to deny that parenthood tends to push people toward defensive, loss-averting "protect the children" mentalities which, on a global scale, fuck everyone else over. That talking point you constantly see among the Very Online Right that parents are more likely than non-parents to think Beyond Themselves and want to build a stable world for the long term, just seems obviously false to me. Or at least if it is true, it's true in a way which is mostly irrelevant, since these "long-view parents" don't know how to turn those wants into policy which actually achieves them.

Frankly, I think it's easy to envision a world where the Vance Plan makes all policy around child-rearing worse instead of better, and depresses the birth rate even further.

Bobby— Mastermind, it is a cop out potentially because he is the leader but come on Bobby is like Nate if Nate ever got sober and nice— he’s literally an alcoholic with sever survivors guilt. He also has a pretty ridged moral code that I feel could drive a leverage team to form though I’m not sure how he would enter a life or crime? Perhaps his 3 generation firefighting family was a long line of conmen instead.

Athena— also a Mastermind/Inside Man/Hitter (She’s Angela basset she can fulfill a lot of roles!)— I like the idea that she was a cop and switched sides because of something and uses the insider knowledge sorta like Nate with the evil business people he interacted with as an insurance man or (not that he’s a Mastermind but) Harry in redemption with all the evil business men he defended as a lawyer. She also is undeniably a great leader but I do think that she would have some kind of hitter role in the past, Elliot hates guns but she doesn’t have to and I feel like she would know about weapons and could take up the “Its a very specific __” running joke? idk I also feel like she should be allowed to punch people.

Chimney— Grifter, I feel like this might be a controversial placement because we all know chimney is a TERRIBLE liar but Sophia is a terrible actress unless she’s in the middle of a con! Chimney being a terrible secret keeper in his day to day life only to be fantastic at creating and living in different personas would be really fun I feel! Also, Chimney telling Karen Hen DIED in order to match-make them makes me think he commits to a con in a way that a grifter needs to.

Buck— Thief, so Olivier might be too muscly to go through air ducts now, but I feel like some of Bucks daredevil stunts map nicely onto this role! Specifically his well documented love of rope rescues. Also like Parker he was neglected for most of his childhood and even if they reacted to that neglect in different ways I do think that petty crimes like shoplifting are ones that neglected kids end up doing for attention and if Buck was still not getting the attention he wanted I think he would just escalate.

Hen— Grifter, Hen has reinvented herself multiple times she has been a pharmaceutical rep/a paramedic/ a med student- I’m thinking of the Rashomon job and I can see a world where Hen could play a museum worker and a heiress on the same night and not be noticed because her personas are so rock solid and she put the time into building up those identities (Sophia being at the museum for 6 months and Hen going through years of med school)

Eddie— I do think Hitter makes sense, especially since his and Elliot’s backstories are pretty spot on in a lot of ways. I also think that he would be the guy that kinda hates being the hitter, and he would really bloom in a leverage like team because I think he would like to try on the different hats that a team like this would allow for! (I think he would have long term Mastermind potential!)

Maddie— Hacker, I mean she’s literally the guy in the chair as a dispatcher! I also am thinking back to all of the phone calls that Hardison had to make to pull off different cons and I just think it kinda works! I also really like the idea of Maddie being responsible for one of the redemption things Hardison does basically making DV survivors unfindable on the internet. But I do think that she probably ends up being pulled into Grifter roles more often as time goes on just because I think she could fit a lot of different personas for cons.

Karen— Hacker 1000% but kinda like a Breanna from redemption Hacker who can do a lot of the engineering. I mean she is a rocket scientist after all! I also think Karen would be good at some of the forgery job’s that the team ends up stuck with sometime? I'm also thinking of her and hen's night out and how ready Karen was to track down the person who stole (hen's phone or credit card) and that kinda excitement to be getting out and doing something reminds me of early season Hardison.

Also I know I didn’t say May in my ask but— May and Breanna? Such similar characters in this AU imo- Athena would hate that she was following in her footsteps but I think Maddie and Karen would take May under their wing and she would be a hacker too

A couple months ago I came up with a pen-and-paper shortcut for converting 3 digit decimal numbers to binary.

The reason I say 3 digits specifically is because for 4 digits and up you have to use the full algorithm, but a simplification can be made for lengths 1 through 3. And on the other end, 1 and 2 digits are simple enough that it can just be easier to do it more in your head.

Anyways, what is this method?

Well first, if I were to ask you what 5,394,092 × 6 is, you would no doubt have a difficult time answering. But, if I were to ask you what 1,101,001 × 6 was you'd probably have a much easier time answering.

Lets look as positional notation, which is the typical way we write numbers. The number 123 represents the "constant-valued polynomial" (1×10² + 2×10¹ + 3×10⁰)

If I were to multiply 123 by 4, I could just multiply the polynomial by 4 and distribute it across the additions

4×123 = (4×10² + 8×10¹ + 12×10⁰)

Doing that, the polynomial suggests I should have a 12 in the 1s place, which shouldn't technically be allowed.

But here's the thing, evaluating the polynomial still gives you a value of 492, the correct answer. So my thought is, let's leverage those past two facts for this example:

First and foremost, the Mew/Top/Boston fuckery (+ some Nick theories):

Based on Boston's actions and reputation as someone who sleeps around, I think Mew may have guessed right away how Top and Boston actually know each other. It's not hard to guess. This could be another reason why Mew is making Top work so hard for it.

Based on previews for Ep 3, there are so many possibilities on how it will pan out, but I think Top and Boston will definitely end up fucking. How, you ask? Why would Top agree to sleep with Boston after rejecting him so many times? Welllll ... we ALSO see in the preview 1) Boston trying to make Top jealous of RayMew and 2) Nick finding the photobooth photos of TopBoston. I don't think #1 has quite as much a chance of working as the preview makes us think. I think Top is confident enough that Mew likes him, and that Ray's feelings are unrequited. BUT, Boston holding something over Top to get him to sleep with him? 1000% plausible and would make much more sense given their dynamic - and the uncomfortable way in which Top simply ... didn't fight when Boston assaulted him in the shower (yes, I'm calling it assault. There was no consent). I think Top already knows that Boston has some leverage in their relationship. (Or, there's simply trauma for Top we haven't been introduced to yet, which is also completely plausible.)

But do I think Boston will actually have those photos in his possession by the end of the episode? Hell to the no. I think Nick will definitely swipe them for himself, as collateral to keep Boston around (in addition to the sex tape, which we have yet to see). We haven't seen Nick interact with ANY of the other characters, except for Sand, but that doesn't mean he isn't connected to other characters. I would not be surprised if Nick and Mew know each other somehow, or at the very least, he knows that Top is pursuing Mew and that Boston is friends with Mew. This is the queer community after all, and Top is one of the "Top Tier" which means everyone knows him, and word will have spread that he's pursuing someone named Mew. And just because we haven't seen Nick at the bar, doesn't mean he doesn't go.

I would not be surprised if Nick is the one to spill the tea about TopBoston to Mew (also just made myself laugh because - you know, spill the tea + Boston = Boston tea party. I can't with myself sometimes ya'll).

I think it would be soooo interesting for Boston to have his own dirty games used against him, by someone as seemingly innocent as Nick. Boston thinks he has the control in their relationship because of how blatantly Nick is into him, but Nick isn't above using manipulation and blackmail either.

(Also, can we just appreciate that Boston labeled the photos as "Hot Night" like who even is this guy)

Well, Top may not want to get caught, but could be under the influence enough, jealous enough, or under Boston's thumb just enough to agree to it. I think Boston definitely wants them to get caught. There really is only one scenario I see playing out, but it could play out in many ways. This is where Nick comes in.

As suggested in the preview for ep 3, Nick walks by and sees SOMETHING. The preview suggests it might be SandRay, but that wouldn't make sense thematically. Plus, the lighting doesn't match. But you know what scene it DOES match?

Also, it was in the OG trailer too that Nick catches TopBoston together, which I think means he'll have a huge role to play. I have a hunch he might actually see TopBoston fucking and videotape it to use as further blackmail against Boston. Boy's got a collection at this point.

Another possibility is that Mew sees it all for himself and continues to act beautifully oblivious to the fuckery happening behind his back while preparing some sort of revenge (or absolutely lose his shit and beat Boston like shown in the OG trailer). And also, based on ep 2 when he goes to grab them both from the showers, I have the suspicion he had the motive to catch them - which he doesn't, but he certainly notices Boston's shorts on the floor. I wouldn't be surprised if he notices them sneaking off alone and decides to catch them in the act.

Maybe both or neither of these HCs are going to happen. Who knows! Moral of the story: SOMEONE is going to see TopBoston fucking and the consequences are going to be juicy.

What is Leverage in Forex?

Leverage in Forex allows you to trade a much larger amount than what you have in your trading account.

Every retail trader should carefully monitor trading margins and leverage and how they can affect trading activity.

The concept of leverage is closely related to the concept of margin, a form of debt used by traders and investors to control financial instruments.

A trader can use a deposit in a margin account as collateral to protect their broker from losses incurred by the trader’s activities in the market.

Using a margin account implies that a trader borrows a balance of trading positions from their broker that exceeds their actual deposit balance.

Typically, leverage involves using leveraged financial instruments or capital, such as margin, to increase potential income.

Since the use of leverage, compared to using only equity, increases a trader’s potential for both profit and loss, it is often compared to a double-edged sword.

What is leverage?

Imagine that your deposit is $100

You enter a trade with $10, and your broker provides 1:100 leverage.

This means you can hold a position up to $1,000 because for every dollar you put in, your broker will lend you $99 for a total of $100.

With leverage, the trader uses the broker’s funds to control more capital.

Leverage is used in many trading markets, and the amount of funds provided to a trader depends on the broker.

Without a doubt, forex leverage is a great advantage for a trader.

So this means at least $10 since $10 is 1% of 1000 (1 micro lot).

Trader A has a leverage of 1:400 and therefore requires a trading account of 1/400 or 0.25% of the position size.

Trader A must have at least $2.5 in their account, which is 0.25% of 1000 (1 mini lot).

Leverage can be extremely dangerous.

If your trading account is $1000 with 1:400 leverage, for only $100, you can trade 4 mini lots.

If you spend $100 on one position, you can lose $400, which is 40% of your trading account.

To control a $100,000 position with 1:100 leverage, you only need $1,000 on your deposit.

Now you can manage $100,000 with $1,000.

Let’s say your trade made a profit, and $100,000 turned into $101,000.

If you used 1:1 leverage and entered the trade with $100,000, your profit would be very small and 1% ($1,000 of $100,000).

But if you took leverage of 1:100 and opened a trade with only $1000, your income would be 100% ($1000 of $1000).

But if you suffered a loss, you would lose only 1% of your capital in the first case, and in the second case, you would lose your entire capital.

Calculation of effective and available leverage

However, suppose there is not enough room in the credit line with the counterparty to cover the proposed forex transaction.

In that case, the interbank currency trader will need special permission from their firm’s in-house loan officer or manager to complete the transaction with that counterparty.
