Everything is going perfectly fine (if you ignore the building up caffeine addiction, his wrecked social life, and the weird dreams that seem to plague him every time he closes his eyes.)

a rant about the media narratives surrounding lewis, fernando and max

ok so ever since well, bahrain testing 2023 and the discovery that aston martin do indeed have a fast car (and more importantly, one which is faster than merc), the media have created the alonso ‘hype-train’, saying that this man is basically the third-coming-of-christ (let us not forget about the ‘great white hope’ himself who is the only one standing between nando and jesus himself, but i digress); example are aplenty, as the majority of formula 1’s posts on instagram, twitter etc. being about fernando and even sky making a cute little montage reminding people (who most probably have not watched nando’s glory days) that nando is in fact a two-time world champion, went through nearly all teams on the grid like a hot knife through butter, leaving a fire behind him Every. Single. Time. (you gotta respect the man at least for his ability to cause drama everywhere) and that this is not the first time he is not in a back-marker team.

And you can understand the hype to a certain extent...jeez, dude’s forty-one and races brilliantly with as much as fire as before; (disclaimer: as much as i can dislike the man, i can still recognise as a great racing driver, because you really would have to be blind not to see it); but there is a limit to it which i think has been crossed and it’s about deserving something…deserving a better team, deserving a third world championship, deserving to win races…

pray tell how exactly this third title ‘much-deserved’? and i fully understand media tactics, content creation, boosting engagement, clicks, likes etc. etc., it’s all part of the game, i know…but why is it that fernando is the one who ‘deserves’ it? Why is the media suddenly capable of using the narrative of ‘deserving’ in relation to someone like fernando alonso?

And why that narrative can never be present in relation to one lewis hamilton? The answer’s pretty easy, no? But it runs deeper…because the media don’t want to like lewis hamilton. they didn’t want him to win in 2021, that much is obvious if you rewatch literally any race from that season and listen to the narrative around him and max…the ‘dethroning’, the ‘young-pretender’ etc. the elements where all there, they were ready, waiting impatiently for the new champion, their new ‘face of f1’ (how’s that working out for them eh?) and when ad21 came about…which was even better for the show because the stakes were all that higher with the two of them on equal points…until of course, lap 57, it was all going slightly against the script, wasn’t it? But then they did their little rule-breaking, ‘human error’, whatever you want to call it and so what? max verstappen champion of the world.

lewis hamilton couldn’t afford to say anything. he couldn't because of who he is. And the media knew it. They would swallow him up like wolves. They would pounce on him, rip him up, mix him with dirt; and if they don’t do that (because he disappeared for a few months) they will sickly glorify his composure, his class, monetise his trauma etc. And we see it to this day…his silence was glorified; last year, sky f1 knew perfectly well what strategy to take; they’ve got their new champion; there’s no asterisk to that title- martin brundle (ironic you had to clarify that bud), or better yet say ‘move on’,‘it wasn’t that bad, just a mistake’, ‘you can’t change it’’, yeah because you wouldn’t like it to be changed, would you? You never wanted a black man to break that record, did you?

oh and also thank god lewis came back to the sport, and oh how amazing it is that merc built a shitbox of a car, so we can now again talk about how ‘he still hasn’t recovered from ad21’, let’s again use his trauma, say he’s finished, that he’s struggling, let’s make a mockery out of it all, yeah…and max, oh you know, he drives like a champion, he deserved that title, you win it over a season- martin brundle, again (it’s always the same suspects, isn’t it?)

He deserved it, here it is again. max verstappen deserved his titles (rule-breaking and cost cap breaches under the carpet); he’s a pure racer, you know. All he cares about is racing. He’s pure talent and passionate.

fernando alonso deserves his third title, apparently. He works hard. He empowers his team. He works well with his new, young teammate. He’s got the experience, the maturity and the talent. He’s the oldest driver on the grid, but he’s driving better than ever.

Lewis won’t get that because he’s alone as the only black man in this sport, which will continue to isolate him, belittle him, but also will use him. Lewis won’t ever get the alonso treatment. He won’t be willed on, cheered on, no. No, never.

I mean for starters, you have to understand post-AD21 was overall insane. People lost their minds, the conspiracy theories were off the chart, long post essays were being written, the Orange Army - TeamLH war was at its worst, allegations were being thrown around, bad faith was at an all time high... It was hell. Tbh the Lewis draught was kind of the least of my concerns at first.

I was a bit more insane myself at the time ngl. Partly losing my mind because "they'd ruined this sport for me" which. Huh. We learn and we grow. Partly trying to navigate my way through the more or less irrational takes that were professionally or unprofessionally flying around everywhere.

Then it got boring.

I still couldn't make sense of it, and Lewis was silent, and that's when I started watching his career from the start to try to find answers.

Hello this might be a sensitive question, i just started watching f1 and came across AB2021 scandal . Can you tell me more on how lewis reacted in between AB2021 till the starting of 2022 season. Was there any negative things that happened to him?

Hey how long have you been following f1? I started following in 2023 and I honestly got so shocked about lewis coming to ferrari. I didn't even thought this would be a real possibility.

It made me pretty upset in general, because I kind of feel charles was cheated lmao. He is there working hard to make them succeed and now they just bring Lewis out of nowhere, paying huge amounts of money to him and making him the ambassador of ferrari.

And like I saw in some of your posts now everyone is already giving lewis the credit for all the changes. I even saw someone on twitter say that maybe they brought Vasseur already thinking on bringing Lewis, since they also worked together in the past. Like Oh of course who cares about chuck. In their minds its like these.

So even if ferrari gets better in the next years everything will be attributed to him.

This is why I kind of hope he doesn't win the wdc. Honestly, maybe its because i'm new in f1 but I don't understand the hype about him getting the 8?? Like he already have 7!!! Thats a lot. I would much rather see the young generarion getting titles. I know he wants to break Schumacher records, but it doesnt seem like such an important think to me? Feels more like an ego trip. And even if you break the record, its not like Schumacher its going to be less than an icon. Senna, Proust, Lauda nobody cares if they have less championships, they are icons. And who knows, a few years later another driver might break this record, so then what? (Kind of hope for max to be the one breaking just for the funsies, since he doesn't seem to care that much about status)

So yeah I think i'm a bit angry with this lol. Like Lewis got his time in dominant mercedes winning titles with Bottas as second driver. Max is having this right now with Checo as second. I wish charles could have this, not have another first driver fighting for priority in the team. And who knows if they're going to develop the car more to his liking than charles. first, honestly i think its very fair to be upset for charles. in terms of public perception, the move does not currently reflect well on him and i’ve seen incredible amounts of slander, though that’s also on me for not blocking and muting enough, lol. the timing, after we all assumed the first driver war was over with the 4lyfe contract extension could actually not be worse and i believe that’s a big reason for the dismayed response. there are like ten thousand opinions on whether this is good or bad, im more inclined towards it being beneficial eventually because i believe charles can beat a 40yo lewis. i doubt i can add something that hasn’t already been said by countless others haha, this piece here is especially good. ultimately, the team dynamics of a ferrari 1644 pairing will be decided with their on track performance, so it comes down to having faith in Charles’ ability.

now onto Lewis, i’m actually quite invested in him getting his eighth, which is why i, personally, wanted to cry when i first heard the news. as for why fans want that eighth title for him so desperately- uhm. AD21.

additionally, we’ve talked a lot about the ferrari mythos, but Lewis’ personal brand also cannot be understated. for many, many people, Lewis himself is a dream. a black man from a working class background who uses his platform and prestige to advance inclusivity, having his name etched in history as the most successful f1 driver of all time is to me the best thing to ever come out of this racing series. i know its irritating to see Charles be dismissed like his past 5 years at ferrari is nothing, but that’s a fan response, likely not what’s happening behind the scenes, and it’s honestly very difficult to begrudge fans of a driver for wanting their driver to win more titles.

tbh, the hype toward Lewis’ move is in large part because of how successful his sudden jump to mercedes in 2013 was. there’s a belief that he can spot a competitive package before it presents itself, and i believe in it too. this also is a good thing for Charles. i think recency bias with regards to his bad luck and the frankly bizarre media favouritism shown to Carlos has made most people who don’t follow Charles like we do underestimate him.

lastly, no comments for the redbull situation and Max lol, but historically it isn’t true that a championship winning team needs to have a strong first driver and weaker second. one example would be Seb and Mark Webber in redbull. Mark Webber gets overshadowed a lot because of the 2010-2013 Seb dominance but he was a strong driver who helped redbull dominate those years. the other examples are actually all Lewis pairings, i think it’s recency bias again driving this narrative that Lewis had an easy time with his teammates. Lewis’ teammates have been like, incredibly stacked? let’s not engage in Nico Rosberg erasure even though he’s currently pretending like he has absolutely no stake in what’s probably the biggest move in Lewis’ career. there’s this post going around about how 1644 isn’t even a top3 Lewis pairing and unfortunately until Charlie wins that championship with ferrari i am objectively unable to disagree. before Lewis got Valterri as a teammate he was partnered with Alonso, Jenson Button and Nico R. he pretty much had incredible teammates for his first decade in f1. and we all know he rates Charles highly, so all respect to him for deciding to throw himself into a new challenge w ferrari.

i think actually the fact that pundits and reporters are suggesting this could be a all time great pairing is a sign of how highly Charles is rated even though he’s not a world champion yet.

at the end of this Lewis and Charles would have shared the rare experience of having multiple, multiple wdcs as teammates and that’s incredible. let’s not forget that Lewis named Charles as the young driver he sees the most of himself in. honestly, if i had to pick a world champ for Charles’ career to resemble, i’d rather it be Lewis who has come out on top of so many strong teammates than Max.

I feel like, the events after have so much potential, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Like, will Lewis’ actions ever be known? Will he pay for the crime of making the kingdom’s magic a collateral for the additional magic he got in order to beat Nico? Will Mick hide his knowledge of the whole thing or will he crack and reveal it in the face of injustice that Nico faced and is still facing? Is the relationship between Mick and Nico purely sexual? Platonic? Just a moment of curiosity and adventure? How about Nico? Just what had happened that Mick needed to carry his unconscious form all the way back? What were the repercussions of him using his magic to bring Lewis back? And for that matter, when did Nico woke up from unconsciousness? What was Lewis’ reaction to finding Nico out and about, even rescuing him? Also, how far has Mick gone and would still go if it meant having Nico?

Sorry if this turned into a rant, I was simultaneously appreciative and fascinated with your fic, and was hoping to read some more, if ever u plan to continue it. Nonetheless, thank you very much for putting it out there! It really was a great piece of work!

Hi anon! I can answer some of these questions, but others are meant to remain open.

Regarding the coucil's decision... I can't give you an answer, but I will say that Lewis and those close to him are the only ones with a vested interest in locking Nico away... the remainder of the council are not so bothered by him. I think Seb will try his best to vote impartially, and Lewis isn't voting, so consider that how you will. I wanted the fic to end in the sort of present day post-brocedes limbo, so I wasn't eager to resolve anything.

Will Lewis's actions be known? Lewis probably won't ever go on trial. I think his struggle after the fic is mostly internal. The most important thing is that he knows what he did. He isn't going to be forthcoming about it with the rest of the council, but Seb will probably guess. Since the Yas Marina represents AD21, I wonder if the end of Lewis's reign is coming? I'm not committed to that, but it makes sense wrt canon. Mick is not going to spill any of Lewis's secrets... I think he understands that Nico would prefer if everything between him and Lewis remained a personal matter.

As far as the nature of Mick and Nico's relationship... platonic might be a good way to put it? There aren't really any examples of romantic relationships on the level of marriage or dating in the fic, so I imagine that what Nico and Mick have is deep respect and some love with occasional sex. I don't think they're fucking while Nico is on trial, though.

What happened in the Yas Marina to save Lewis was essentially a transfer of magic as life energy? The Yas Marina had completely drained Lewis, and Nico gave his magic to bring him back to life... handwavey magic stuff mostly, but the idea was that Nico was very close to dying for real. Your other questions about what happened when Nico woke up, what was Lewis's reaction, how far would Mick go... I am keeping these to myself for redacted reasons. But imagine that as deeply as Mick feels for Nico, he has other obligations in the castle, and Nico would prefer that he behave.

One thing I always remember about max coming into the sport was during an interview he was asked which drivers he’d like to know, one of his was Lewis (or something along those lines). And pre 2021 they got on, you would see them talking to each other and such, they would joke that Lewis always called max ‘this guy’. Lewis was one of the few drivers max followed and vice versa. But I think Lewis knew how talented max was and so kept him at an appropriate distance for someone you know will challenge you for a championship in the future, lewis knew first hand how some friendships pan out in f1, plus max was really young. Even in 2021, after they crashed in silverstone max explained later that Lewis rang him to explain his side and talk about it, so when they crashed in monza max said post race they’ll move past it like before. I think 2022 lewis was still reeling from the loss of the championship (understandable so) and having a tractor didn’t help, but never once did Lewis blame max for what he did, he explicitly said he explicitly said in interviews ‘max did everything a driver should do’. Now it seems that their both in a really good place relationship wise where they can joke and be giggly and touchy feely, so why can’t fans just move on and enjoy it instead of always being negative. You are seeing potentially two of the greatest f1 drivers in history flirting with each other, enjoy it! Sorry for the ramble :))

and yeah i think my clearest tipping point post AD21 was that lewis said something along the lines of, 'if i had been in max's position, i'd have done the same.' like !! yeah !! the choices made weren't max's! he just ended on the winning side of things. if someone had placed a mug slightly too much to the left, the butterfly effect would've started and their positions had actually been swapped and lewis would be wdc. so! stop moaning about it, not max's fault.

Yeah about that post, to me was the bit about discovering humility and learning how to apologize and all of that, maybe it wasn't done with malice in mind but again plays into the fact that he had to become docile and beaten for people to like him and say oh I used not to like but after 21 etc

Some of the traits "exposed" in that post are things other drivers gets praised for or asked to be, i don't get why Lewis had to lose them in order to be likeable (cough cough the racism). He can be kind and nice and grow as a person while still be painfully honest and throw a jab here and there, he hasn't lost the edge like some people like to sometimes point out

thinking about the morning after AD21. because that's when i made my first post here. technically it's been a whole year since i started venting here because it was unbearable for me to sit in silence after witnessing that shitshow alone. i kept posting thinking i'll be screaming into the void but i found a community. a mixed bag of some of the most lovely, creative, passionate, opinionated people, and some rude, obnoxious, hateful ones. but what's important is, i found a place where i could loudly freak out about lewis and cuss out f1 all i want and for that i just want to thank you all.

i've not made many friends here because i am a cold and distant bitch so that's on me but i do appreciate all those who interact with my posts, tag me, talk to me and tolerate my presence ❤️

That helpless feeling of watching the end of the race unfold and seeing second by second exactly what they were doing to him was AWFUL. The FIA had made it clear all season and especially in the three races right before AD21 that they were willing to give Max a pass on EVERYTHING and make up punishments for Lewis out of thin air, and STILL somehow Lewis beat them all.

The aftermath was just as bad, though. Lewis got out of the car and we didn’t see or hear from him again until weeks and weeks later since he rightly skipped all the media stuff and didn’t post on Insta or anything. Plus all the insane discourse on Twitter and on here, and the media trying to gaslight fans into thinking nothing was wrong about what had happened….

It was a bad bad time, and even though I kinda wish I could rewatch those last few races because it was honestly a privilege and an honor to witness Lewis outperform everyone so beautifully against the odds, I just cannot lol. It’s waaaay too triggering
