Barbaroux from the time he attempted suicide to the time he was guillotined.
The documents I quote are published in “Charlotte de Corday et les Girondins. Piéces classes et annotées” (Vol. 2) written by Charles Vatel. All page numbers are given for this book.
From the letter written by the member of Bordeaux district to the deputy of the National Convention Jay and published in Moniteur on 8th Messidor year II (p. 161) we know that Barbaroux was found in the morning of 3rd Messidor on a wheat patch “bathed in his own blood”. He was then carried to Castillon where he was interrogated for the first time. National agent of the Libourne district Lagarde saw letters R.B. on his clothes “so he asked him: “Are you Buzot?” Not being able to speak, because he had wounded his jaw with a pistol shot, he nodded no. He was asked if he was Barbaroux. He nodded yes.”
From the report written by Laye and Oré, commissars appointed by Julien, deputy on mission in Gironde (p.135):
“Citizens magistrates Serezac and Lavache arrested and interrogated the unknown, who had shot himself in the right ear, in our presence. From his confession it drew that he was Charles Barbaroux.”
“In our presence” means in presence of Laye and Oré, but, according to this very report, Oré came to Castillon only on the night of Messidor 4th AND the paragraph above describes what happened after his arrival. Laye was in Castillon since the afternoon of Messidor 3rd with other officials. According to the letter above he was sent there after Barbaroux’s confession to Lagarde, so Barbaroux must have repeated it many times that day.
From the same report, on the same night of Messidor 4th:
“We were very concerned and trusted the judgement of citizens Verniuel and Lassime, physicians, who decided that Barbaroux could be safely transported in a boat with a bed.”
The report only talks about the examination, but, as we will see below, commissars wanted Barbaroux alive very much, so they were interested in providing him medical care if that was possible. Also, when they ask someone to come, they then write it in the report. No such line is written about physicians, so they must have come before the evening of 4th Messidor.
“Therefore, the municipality demanded the boat. Barbaroux’s possessions were placed into a bag on which the magistrate put a seal. Batut, one of us, together with one municipal officer, four guards and doctor Verniuel transported Barbaroux to Bordeaux. They departed at seven in the morning.”
The possesions weren't described neither here nor below, but they must have been similar to the ones that were taken from Buzot's and Pétion's corpses: hats, handkerchiefs, armes and Buzot's golden watch.
Another boat of the guards was soon sent after them.
From Procès de Barbaroux (p. 190):
7th Messidor year II (25 July 1794) Charles Barbaroux (á mort) Part 1. Today on 6th Messidor year II of the Republic one and indivisible, we, the undersigned members of the Comité de surveillance of the commune of Bordeaux established by the Committee of Public Safety of the National Convention, interrogated the man under the name as follows: Q: What is your name, age, occupation, place of birth and last residence? A: Barbaroux, twenty-seven years old, deputy of the National Convention, from Marseille, last resided in Saint-Emilion, the country of Guadet. Q: Who inflicted this wound on your head? A: It was me. Q: Where were you hiding? A: Near Libourne. Q: Have you been in Castillon? A: I’ve stayed there for some time. Q: Condorcet was with you? A: He went to Italy. And, considering that he was in a state of madness, we ended the interrogation at this point, as we have properly acknowledged his identity on the said day, month and year as written above. Signed: Lelom, Plenaud, Michenot.
Vatel comments that Barbaroux couldn’t know what had happened to Condorcet and so he could assume that he had gone abroad. Therefore, the madness described in the protocol must have been expressed by all his demeanor and not just this answer.
Unfortunately, we don’t have a description of this demeanor. So, we won’t know exactly what made them think that Barbaroux was mad (the whole possibility of which is quite likely).
Part 2. (p. 191)
Extract from the protocol of the seance of the Revolutionary Committee of Supervisory Committee (Comité revolutionaire de surveillance) of Bordeaux established by the Committee of Public Safety.
On 7th Messidor Committee, fearing that the state in which Barbaroux, outlawed ex-deputy, finds himself would lead to his premature death if he was transported to the prison or the bar of the court before his identity being acknowledged, consulted with citizen Julien, commissar of the Committee of the Public safety in Bordeaux. Commissar decided to invite the President of the Military commission to discuss the safest way to execute the conspirator. The president came and observed the state Barbaroux was in. After that the discussion was held. Because Barbaroux’s illness (maladie), according to the surgeons report, was not compatible with transporting him to the prison in view of the accidents that may happen; because the law demanded him to be executed; because the Committee premises are much closer than the Place National; willing to reconcile what is due to national justice with what humanity prescribes, we decided that the President will invite his colleagues to recognize Barbaroux this afternoon in one of the Committees rooms. Signed: Plenaud, President; Michenaud, Cassan, Huin; J.J. Guignan, secretaire.
From Condamnation a mort de Charles Barbaroux (p. 195):
7 Messidor year II of the Republic, one and indivisible
The Commission opened its session in one of the Supervisory Committee rooms with opened dors and with presence of the people. A man who said he was Charles Barbaroux, ex-deputy, twenty-seven years old, born in Marseille, last resided in Saint-Emilion, was introduced to them. The Military commission, after recognizing the identity of Barbaroux, ordered that, based on the law of 28 July 1793, he will undergo the death penalty and that all his possessions are confiscated for the benefit of the Republic and that all above will be printed and displayed everywhere it will be necessary.
Acte de décès de Barbaroux (p. 197):
“8 Messidor year II Died yesterday, as was established by the protocol signed and delivered by citizen Giffrey, secretary of the Military commission, CHARLES BARBAROUX, born in Marseille, resided in Saint-Emilion for some time, twenty-seven years old, deputy of the National Convention. Signed: Séguit, public officer Bordeaux, 8th Messidor year II of the Republic”
With no “ex”. In the end he dies as a deputy.
