Boogie Shoes
Hi! It’s been a while since I’ve written anything and this came to me randomly after a long day at work.
This is part of my “Life in The ER” series, though it doesn’t take place within the hospital. However, there is mention of death and curse words.
As always, feedback would be fantastic! Thank you for reading!
April 15, 2020
It was a shit day. That’s all he could say as he slammed the car door behind him as he looked at the lit up bungalow. He sighed, wanting nothing more than to leave the day behind.
He had seen entirely too much death that day. A horrible tragedy in the city, a building explosion, with most of the injured being sent to his hospital. And by the time he walked out of the hospital, he had been in the room when several people’s deaths had been called. And his heart couldn’t take the heartache of the day anymore. All he wanted to do was curl up on the couch with his husband and puppies and remember there was still good in the world.
As his hand hit the doorknob, he paused, his ears perking up at the cacophony of sound that met them. Pushing open the door, he let his bag slide off his shoulder, ignoring it as it crashed to the ground. Toeing off his shoes, his eyes lit up realizing what song was blaring.
And at that moment, he could’ve cried at how sweet and thoughtful his husband was.
“Boogie Shoes” by KC and the Sunshine Band pierced throughout the house as Race sang along at the top of his lungs.
Walking to the edge of the kitchen, Spot peered around the corner and had to stop the snort that threatened to escape his mouth. Race was in a pair of sweatpants, white tank top, and a blue bandana in his hair as his hips moved back and forth sloppily as he sang at the top of his lungs.
Though his husband had many, many talents, the talent of dancing was questionable. Race would be the first on the dance floor at any wedding, mostly to make his friends feel at ease with dancing. But this, this was Race’s special moves - the ones he kept locked up, only revealing them when anyone within his circle was having a bad day. The ones that he’d bust out to make you laugh after a rough day.
I want to put on my my my my my
Boogie shoes just to boogie with you,
I want to put on my my my my my
Boogie shoes just to boogie with you, yeah
As the song came to an end, a new one started. This time “Walking on Sunshine” came on as Race started dancing like a fool.
At this point, Spot couldn’t hold it in any longer. A loud burst of laughter escaped his mouth as Race shook his money maker. Making his presence known, he came up behind Race and started dancing with him, his husband’s face priceless at the shock of seeing him dance along.
Race started singing the lyrics to Spot as they twirled each other around the kitchen, Sadie dancing at their feet.
I used to think maybe you loved me, now, baby, I'm sure
And I just can't wait till the day when you knock on my door
Now every time I go for the mailbox, gotta hold myself down
'Cause I just can't wait till you write me you're coming around
Race scooted over to the stove to stir the tomato sauce he was making, never breaking his crazy dance moves causing Spot to throw his head back and laugh loudly.
Turning down the music, Race gave Spot a look before leaning over and sloppily kissing him. “Hi boo. Dinner will be ready in 15 minutes if you want to take a quick shower.”
“And leave you out here unattended with music blaring and miss the private dance party? No thank you.” Spot smirked, sitting on a barstool, watching Race shake his butt just for Spot’s benefit.
Race dumped the box of noodles into the pot of boiling water. “I won’t ask about your day - Kat gave me the heads up but I will say there’s beer in the fridge and several pints of ice cream in the freezer for later.”
“Is that what all this is for? Because I had a shit day?” Spot smiled sweetly at Race as he quickly nodded.
Quickly stirring the pasta, Race shrugged. “I know how you are after the tough days so I wanted to cheer you up. Besides, we haven't had a dance party in a while.”
“We had one last week, Racer. Or are you getting too old that you forgot?” Spot raised an eyebrow, giving him a look.
Race had the decency to look sheepish before smirking. “Oh no old man, you’ll always be the oldest in this relationship.”
“Might have to change that.” Spot smirked, pushing off the barstool, going to stand behind Race.
Race looked over his shoulder and smirked. “You’d never leave me. You’d have to train the new person on all of your favorites. And teaching me was exhausting.”
Spot raised an eyebrow, a silent challenge issued between the two. Race cleared his throat, leaning close to Spot’s ear, blowing a gust of hot air before speaking. “Besides, there’s that one thing that makes your eyes roll back deep into your head and I ain’t teaching no one that trick.”
Spot’s jaw dropped and he jumped as Race reached down and pinched his ass. “And that’s why you’ll never leave me. I still got it, baby!”
“I hate you.” Spot growled, trying to look menacing but with Race’s rambunctious laughter, he couldn’t stay mad long.
Race leaned over, kissed him a few times before grabbing the pot of pasta to drain. “No you don’t. You absolutely love me and wouldn’t survive an hour without me by your side.”
“You’re right. Thank you Race for cheering me up after a shit day. I love you.” Spot gave him a kiss before opening the fridge door, reaching in and grabbing a glass bottle, silently asking Race if he wanted one. With a nod, Race mixed the sauce and the pasta together, dishing up two plates before walking them to the table. Spot quickly joined him as they sat and deeply inhaled the savory smell of the pasta.
“Sap but I wouldn’t have you any other way. Love you too.” Race smirked, slurping a noodle into his mouth. “Damn I make a good spaghetti sauce.”
Spot gave him a look, a smirk light on his lips. “You’re disgusting.”
“There’s no other way to eat long noodles than to slurp them up.” Race’s eyes lit up. “And no cutting them. In this house we slurp our noodles.”
Spot snorted, tears of laughter in his eyes. “Should I get that printed on a sign?”
“Higgins-Conlon Family Rules.” Race murmured. “We should totally get that sign made. What other rules should we add?”
Spot mulled it over, twirling his noodles into his fork before putting them in his mouth. “Dance parties are a must.”
Hopping up from the table, Race opened their junk drawer and grabbed a notepad and a pen, rejoining Spot at the table. “In this house, we slurp our spaghetti noodles, have dance parties. What else?”
“Pixar movie marathons.” Spot mumbled, watching Race scratch it down hastily. “What are you writing down now?”
Race smirked, shaking his head. “You’ll see.”
“Don’t back down from a challenge.” Spot grinned, watching to see if Race would write it down.
Shaking his head, Race glared at his husband. “That’s not a rule. That’s your mentality.”
“Fine party pooper.” Sticking his tongue out at Race, he gathered their dishes and dumped them in the sink before starting to clean up.
Too busy cleaning up, he failed to notice Race writing down more things on the list.
Closing the door of the dishwasher, Spot threw the towel on the counter before facing his husband, who had a suspicious smirk on his face. Walking across the kitchen, Spot snatched the notepad from Race’s grasp as Race sputtered a cry of defeat.  “You added to the list.”
“Uh huh.” Race looked up at him with a smirk. “You approve?”
Spot’s eyes trailed down the list, a gruff laugh escaped his mouth at a few of them. “Higgins-Conlon family rules. In this house, we slurp our spaghetti noodles, have dance parties, have Pixar movie marathons, tell inappropriate jokes, flirt shamelessly, sing off key loudly, laugh a lot, and love big.” Spot leaned down and kissed Race softly. “It’s perfect. I approve of your additions.”
“Perfect. I’ll get it ordered this week and we can hang it in the entryway.” Race smirked. “We’ll be the talk of the neighborhood.”
Spot raised an eyebrow at his husband. “Hate to be the one to tell you, but I think we’re already the talk of the neighborhood.”
“Ehh let them.” Race stood, throwing his arms around Spot’s shoulders, hiking his left leg around Spot’s waist. “Let them talk about how incredibly sexy and handsome my husband is. Let them talk about us behind closed doors. Because guess what?”
“What’s that?”
Race leaned down and kissed Spot’s lips tenderly. “They’re jealous and screw them.”
Spot couldn’t agree more, chuckling, standing taller to kiss Race. “Thank you Race. I’m glad you’re my person and I’ve got you in my corner.”
“Anytime Snookums.” Race smirked, reaching down and pinching Spot’s ass. “Besides, I know how lucky I am that you’ve kept me around for as long as you have. But you’re not getting rid of me anytime soon.”
Spot shook his head. “You’re just as stuck with me as I am with you. And Race?”
Race raised an eyebrow, before pinching his ass again. “There’s no place I’d rather be, Anthony Higgins-Conlon.”
“Sap!” Race cried, untangling himself from Spot’s embrace, knowing that he was due for a shoulder smack.
Spot threw his head back, looking at the ceiling, trying to reign in the patience he had for his husband. “And you just ruined a nice moment.”
“We’re not that couple - the one that goes all sappy on one another.” Race pointed out. “Just trying to help you keep your tough guy persona.”
Spot gave him an appreciative smile, going to sit on the couch. Sassie jumped up next to him as Race fell to his other side, throwing an arm around him. “Just trying to keep you from regressing into your bad mood from the awful, shit day you had. I love you, Spottie.”
“Love you too Racer. And you’ve made the end of the day wash away the awful part of it.” Spot leaned over and kissed Race’s cheek. “You’re the best part of coming home. Also, the part that I never know what I’m walking into.”
His husband laughed loudly. “Gotta keep you on your toes, Spottie. Never a dull moment in this household.”
And honestly, Spot wouldn’t have it any other way.
What did you think? Feedback would be wonderful!

Santa Fe Part 3
Jumping Jack
Part 3 of the Santa Fe Series Summary: You begin to suspect you’re pregnant and when you tell Jack, he has a reaction that surprises you
“Y/N! You’re on in five!!!” A voice called from the hallway.
“Okay, thanks!” You managed to spit out before your stomach spasmed again, hurling your insides out and into the trash bin you were knelt over. Your knuckles were white from gripping the edges so tightly.
A moment later, Medda was in the dressing room with you.
“Oh sweetheart, not again.” She said, concern in her voice.
“I’m fine.” You stated, but your voice was shaky and you were exhausted. You could hardly keep your eyes open.
Medda shook her head. “Don’t be ridiculous. Go home, get some rest.”
“But the show.” You replied weakly.
“Darling that’s why we have understudies.” Medda said, grabbing a tissue and handing it to you. “You know what this means though, don’t you?”
You took the tissue and wiped at your mouth, nodding slowly. Medda had seen all the signs and symptoms the last few weeks and although you knew it too, you had a hard time accepting the truth.
“Even more reason to go home and tell that boy.” She advised, helping you to your feet.
Despite having your own place now, Jack spent most of his time still at the lodge. He said he didn’t want the guys to feel like he was abandoning them. So this was the first place you went to look for him. He was laughing along with the rest of the newsies, the group of them all circled together and talking.
“Hey!” Jack’s eyes met with yours. “Whatta you doin’ ‘ere?” He smiled and reached his arms out to you as he approached.
“Jack, can we talk?” You asked quietly but the others still heard and fell silent.
You glanced around the room as the newsies stared back at you, concerned.
“Yeah. Yeah, let’s go t’ the roof.” He said, putting his arm around your waist and guiding you out of the room.
Despite the cool fresh air of the rooftop, you still couldn’t help but begin to nervously pace.
“You feelin’ any better?” He asked, his hands in his pockets as he watched you. He’d heard you throwing up every morning for the last while but you managed to convince him it was probably a stomach bug.
You shook your head. “Jack between this and… and the other stuff…” You thought about the fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and mood swings among other things but most importantly your lack of period.
“You- you mean…” Jack stammered, his face turning white.
You nodded, unable to bring yourself to say the words.
He spun around, gripping his hat. “How-” he started, “how the hell did this- when did this happen?!”
You shrugged. “I mean I can’t say when exactly, but Jack… all we ever do is pull out… it happens sometimes.”
“It happens sometimes?!” He echoed, now pacing too. “I-” he tried but couldn’t get any words out. “I gotta take a minute t’ think ‘bout this.” He began climbing down the ladder.
Your heart pounded as he left. What if he never came back? No, not possible. You knew he would never do that to you. He just had to process it and that was okay. You stayed up on the roof for a while, eventually laying down. The stars overhead calmed your nerves and you felt a peace wash over you as you drifted to sleep.
“Y/N, Y/N!” Jack whispered, over you.
You shifted and rubbed your eyes open. Damn, was sleeping on the roof always this uncomfortable? The sun wasn’t even up yet, so you weren’t sure how long you’d been asleep for but it felt like it’d been an eternity.
“Let’s get married!” Jack enthused.
“Wait… what?” You sat up now.
“Let’s get married!” He repeated.
You stared at him, brows furrowed as you tried to process this.
“C’mon, let’s go!” He excitedly took your hands and helped you to your feet. “Oh wait, I don’t got no ring… that’s okay, we can get one later.”  He began to walk toward the ladder.
“Jack, wait.” You stopped and he turned to look at you. “Why now? Aren’t we jumping into things a little fast?”
He approached you and took your hand back in his. “Well I talked it over with the guys, and ya’ know I never want you to worry if I’m gonna’ leave you and our kid alone in the streets. I wanna’ promise you I won’t.”
You smiled and pressed a kiss to his lips.
“‘Sides,” he added, “it’s the right thing to do, and I love ya’, do we need a better reason?”
You shook your head smiling, and followed him down the ladder. On the last rung you let yourself jump down, the excitement lifting you. Once on the street though, it occurred to you that his plan wasn’t exactly well thought out.
“Wait a second, none of the churches will be open at this hour, will they?” You asked, looking to your love.
He held your hand and continued to lead you down the dark street to the nearest church. The nuns there often fed the newsies.
“Ah, don’t worry ‘bout it. The guys are already there wakin’ em up for this.” He said.
You blinked. “What?” But either he didn’t hear you or ignored you and you soon arrived at the church.
A fairly large group of boys were crowded around a doorway.
“Jack… did you send… all the guys?” You asked but once again he didn’t answer.
“Mr. DaSilva, I ask again, is this an emergency?” The priest asked from the door that lead to his quarters. He stood in his sleepwear, which included a long nightcap, and held a candle.
“Ain’t nothin’ more important than true love, Father!” Crutchie enthused. “They’s gonna ‘ave a baby!”
“A baby?! Shall I fetch the nuns then?” The priest looked alarmed.
“Nah, not right this second, Father!” Albert explained then lightly pushed Crutchie. “Look, now ya got him all freaked out.”
“Oh, sorry Father.” Crutchie apologized, taking off his hat.
“They ain’t gon’ have the baby for another… how many months does it take?” Albert asked, looking to Race.
“Nine?” Race suggested though he wasn’t completely confident in his answer.
“Nine months!” Albert replied to the tired man.
“Then why are you here?” The priest asked, getting annoyed.
“Father, sir,” Jack said, now approaching while still holding your hand. The other boys parted to make way for him. “Would ya’ please do me the honor of marryin’ me and my girl, Y/N tonight? Ya’ see, I just found out we’s expectin’ a baby and I know it’s the right thing to do an’ all and even if it wasn’t I’d still be ‘ere,” he turned to face you, “askin’ her eventually.” Jack smiled. “Just so happens fate be makin’ it a little sooner. But I love her, I do.”
You smiled back at him and his thumb rubbed your hand for a moment.
The priest sighed, realizing the crowd of boys wouldn’t let him rest until they were satisfied. “Very well. Let me get my robes and bible.”
The newsies cheered and Jack embraced you in a hug.
***
You let out a frustrated sigh as you flopped down onto the bed in the room that you and your, now husband, rented. It wasn’t in the best of neighborhoods and you knew you couldn’t keep up living there much longer.
“You alright?” Jack asked from the chair in the corner. Other than the bed the only other pieces of furniture the room held was that chair and a table, which were all there before your move in.
You sat up on the bed now. “I just spoke with Medda.” You started. “She says I can’t sing there anymore.”
“What?! Why?!” Jack exclaimed.
You looked from him down to your growing stomach and back. “Why the hell do you think?”
“She fired you ‘cause you pregnant? That ain’t right” Jack shook his head. “I’ll go talk t’ her.”
“What? No! I can fight my own battles, thank you. Besides, she didn’t fire me. She said I can return just as soon as the baby is born.” You sighed. “It’s just her girls… they have a certain look. They gotta be sexy…”
“Darlin’ you’s always sexy, don’t be ridiculous.” He said, joining you on the bed and kissing your forehead.
“Thanks babe, but I get it. We’ve been finding ways to hide my stomach as best we can but it’s just not working anymore. And when was the last time you saw a pregnant lady in show business? Exactly.” You said.
Jack was quiet for a moment. “Okay, well, that’s okay. You can still go back to it after the baby like she said. In the meantime, I’ll see if I can get some extra money with-”
“Rents due next week.” You reminded.
“Damn.” He breathed. But he didn’t want to stress you, he knew how bad stress could be on a pregnancy so he decided to try and stay positive for your sake. “That’s okay, we’ll work something out. Maybe Davey or his family can loan us a bit. Just for now.”
You groaned at the idea of owing people money, even if it was a friend. Leaving the bed, you moved to the chair and picked up the mail that was sitting on the table. There was a letter from your parents. As much as you hated to go backwards instead of forwards in life you didn’t see any other option at the moment.
“We’ve gotta move back in with my parents.” You stated.
“You mean… Santa Fe?” Jack asked, the usual sparkle in his eye whenever he said the name.

When Roger wakes up, his first instinct is to rub his eyes with the back of his hand. But a lipstick writing on his left hand stops that detail of his mornings and he squints his eyes to see what's written on his hand.
“Clean, sober, home. Call Y/N.”
He's confused at first and tries to remember how these words came to be. He was drinking a lot, he was in a bar, and girls were all around him. But he wanted to drown in his misery alone, well, minus the alcohol. He called Y/N and they had spoke before she ended the call.
Roger sighs with relief when he remembers what the words on his hand mean. Y/N had told him to call her when he's home, clean and sober, and it was so important that he wrote it on his hand. Roger knows it's important to him, because Y/N is the most important thing in his life. And for her, he'd do anything.
Roger sits up in bed and immediately gets hit by a merciless headache. He groans and his head collapses in his hands. He has to stop drinking at one point or another. Perhaps he could start today.
Roger had a warm and soothing shower that made his thoughts wash away just like the dirt his body had collected. He washed his hair, as well as himself, and then spent an hour or two cooking breakfast for himself, letting his hair dry naturally.
He couldn't remember the last time he'd washed his hair, and best - he couldn't recall the last time he'd had a shower. He was truly in a dark hole, but the thought of talking and being with Y/N again motivates him to take care of himself. He knows he needs to take care of himself either way, but when Y/N's the motivation, it's a lot better.
Roger puts on some dark blue bell pants and a white embroidered shirt. The shirt fits him well, and there's a deep cut that reveals the top of his chest.
He doesn't remember if he has any plans with his band today, if he has to record or is there any interview they need to attend. Roger doesn't even have a notebook or calendar to mark any important events in following days. All he could think about is the girl who he's almost not allowed to see.
He sits on his bed and anxiously takes the telephone in his hand. His fingers turn Y/N's phone number on and he waits for her to answer. For a few moments, he only hears the waiting signal, and Roger almost wants to give up and put the phone down, but then he hears Y/N's sweet voice and every sense of his hightens.
“Hello?”
He doesn't even know what to say, he's very happy to hear her voice and realise that she's picked up her phone. “Y/N.” He says. “Hi.”
“Roger!” She almost gasps, but controls herself. “You called.”
“Yeah, yeah, I did.” Roger says before a silence falls between them. “And I'm sober, I took a shower and I had breakfast.”
“Really? I'm proud of you, Rog.” She admits. Y/N's face is decorated by a small smile. “So why have you called me?”
“I, uhm...” Roger trails off and scratches his chin. He's a little confused by her question, thinking she knows why he is calling, “I want to see you.”
Y/N stays silent, but nods. She knows, she knows. “Okay.”
Roger's heart almost stops. Does that mean she'll agree to meeting him?! “Er—uh—uhm... are you—when are you free? Are you free today?”
“I am.” Y/N answers him. Actually, she took this exact day free of work because she wants to give Roger all of the time she can. She doesn't know at what time he's free and she doesn't have the type of work where she can play the game of fortune with her time.
“Great! Uhm, then—let's meet at the East corner of Hyde Park, the one where you always waited for the bus home.” Roger suggests the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks about a place with the memory of Y/N.
“Yeah, alright.” Y/N agrees and lets out a chuckle. “At what time?”
“As soon as you can. I've got the whole day free.” Roger doesn't know if he's telling her the truth, but he trusts his poor memory and thinks he's right.
“Alright then. I'll be there in half an hour.” She states. “What should I wear?” She's teasing him and she knows it, she's doing it on full purpose. But only because she's in quite a good modd and wants to hear Roger's voice as much as she can before meeting him.
“I don't know. Find your best dress and matching shoes or whatever. Nothing more.” Roger replies and his mind slips to images of Y/N's different dresses that he's ever seen her wear. Not even underwear? Y/N thinks to herself.
“Okay.” Y/N almost whispers, her voice so quiet. “I'll see you in a bit.”
“Yeah, okay. See you there, love.” Roger speaks up, the nickname slipping out involuntarily. He hears Y/N whisper a soft and quiet 'goodbye' into the phone before she hangs up and he sighs loudly when she does.
Roger smiles to himself and yells out a loud “YEAH!!” as he puts the telephone down. He's got himself a date with the only girl on his mind.

Welcome to the World, Little One
This is a continuation of my “Life in the ER” series. To catch up on the series, you can click here. This is the story behind baby Kelly's birth.
Warnings include: cursing, hospital, needles, mentions of surgery, blood, pain, and the emergency room.
July 5, 2020 4:00pm
“Do you boys need anything before I take off for the afternoon?” Plums tossed a chart on the counter, giving Albert and Spot a glance, leaning against the counter, rubbing her heavily pregnant belly.
“Pizza, beer, cheetos, need I go on?” Spot raised an eyebrow, grinning at Plums.
She leaned over and swatted him, cursing her big belly for getting in the way. “Smartass. Do you need anything related to the job?”
“Nah I think we’re good.” Albert said with a grin. “When do you start maternity leave?”
Kat looked around the busy room, feeling comfortable with the constant beeping of monitors and the quiet murmurs of conversations around her. Looking between the two, she sighed. “Not soon enough. I’m working until this baby comes.”
“Have you figured out names yet?” Spot asked, knowing that was a hotly contested debate between Jack and Katherine.
Sighing, her eye caught the clock as she shook her head. “We’ve got middle names figured out but a list a mile long with first names. We figured we’d see them first before figuring out a first name.”
“Can we know? Are you telling people?” Albert leaned forward, full display of puppy dog eyes on display.
A commotion at the bay doors caught their attention as Kat grinned brightly. Jack walked over to where she stood, leaning over to kiss her before shaking hands with Spot and Albert. “Afternoon boys.”
“You’re not letting her drive, huh?” Spot asked, looking at his brother-in-law with a grin.
Kat sighed while Jack nodded. “He took away my driving privileges thus he is my chauffeur now.”
“So what was with the serious looks when I walked in?” Jack asked, mimicking his wife’s stance.
She grinned. “They were asking me if they could know the middle names we picked out.”
“I don’t care. Share if you want.” Jack shrugged as Spot and Albert both turned to Plums with their puppy dog eyes.
Kat smirked. “Charlotte and Robert and that’s all you’re getting from me. Ready, Jack? See you tomorrow boys.”
And with that, the two of them headed out of the hospital, leaving Spot and Albert grinning at the desk.
Soon there were several ambulances at the door, causing Spot and Albert to spring into action, busy for the rest of the afternoon.
8:00pm
Leaning back in his chair, Spot sighed loudly. He was eight hours into his 12 hour shift and the last four hours had been a nightmare with more gunshot wounds and a heart attack victim than a normal night. This was the first time he was able to sit down and catch his breath. Hearing his stomach growl, he looked over at Albert, who was sitting next to him charting.
“Wanna go grab some food? I’m starving.” Spot pushed back his chair and stood, not waiting for Albert to follow suit.
The two headed towards the cafe, each lost in their own thoughts. They broke off, each getting their own food before meeting up at the table. “I feel like I haven’t even gotten to talk to you today - why does the day after fourth bring all the crazies out?”
“Because people think they’re suddenly smarter after drinking and partying and celebrating the birth of this country!” Albert explained dryly as he savored his mac and cheese.
Pointing his spoon at Albert, he didn’t get to say what he was thinking as Michelle, another nurse in the ER, skidded to a stop in front of their table. “Plums was just brought in. She’s in labor.”
Pushing back from the table, Spot and Albert both stood, quickly throwing their trash away before following Michelle back down to the Emergency Room. Spot took a deep breath before pushing through the doors, not knowing what was waiting for them on the other side.
“Spot, Albert, Plums is in Bay 3 getting checked out.” Romeo pointed out. Spot gave Albert a nod before heading in that direction.
Ducking through the curtains, he smiled seeing Jack and Plums along with several doctors and nurses around her. “Spot!”
Jack’s head quickly turned to him as Plums yelled out, holding out the hand that Jack wasn’t holding. He quickly was at her side, leaning over and kissing her already sweaty forehead. “Hi Spottie. Michelle said you were down at the cafe.”
“Yeah . . . it was the first time Al and I could get away to eat something.” Spot said, reaching over to clasp Jack’s hand with a grin. “But I hear we’re on baby watch now.”
Plums sighed, squeezing both his and Jack’s hands as a contraction hit. “That’s what they tell me.”
Jack pressed a kiss to her forehead before looking over at Spot. “Can you call Medda, Race, and Smalls and let them know?”
“Do you want them to come down?” Spot asked, raising an eyebrow at them. “Do you want me to call your parents?”
Jack looked at Kat with a grin before quickly nodding. “Tell them they can come down. I’ll call my parents later - you guys don’t need to be dealing with them. Are we heading upstairs?”
Spot looked over his shoulder at Dr. Smith, grinning at them. “We will be moving you upstairs shortly. We’re going to do a quick exam to see where you’re at then we’ll get you upstairs. Do either of you need anything?”
“Ice chips and an epidural.” Kat grinned, raising her eyebrows at her colleague.
“Slow your roll, Plums.” She grinned. “I’ll get your ice chips but let’s see how far along you are before I order an epidural.”
Spot chuckled at Plums expression before pointing out in the hallway. “I’ll just go make those phone calls.”
He quickly made the phone calls to Smalls and Medda before dialing Race’s number. “Spot, hey what’s up?”
“You need to get down to the hospital. Kat and Jack are in and Kat’s in labor.” Spot said, walking over to the nurse’s station and taking a seat.
“Did you call momma and Smalls?” Race asked.
Spot smiled. “Yeah, I called them first. Just make sure you get here quickly - I don’t have any details yet. Just that they’re in the ER, probably being moved upstairs.”
“I’m on my way. Do you need anything?” Race asked as Spot paused.
Spot watched Dr. Smith make her way out of Plums’ room. “Can you bring me a change of clothes? Sweatpants, hoodie, and tennis shoes. Might want to bring a deck of cards or a board game. I have a feeling we’re in for a long night.”
“Okay. I’ll see you in a bit, Spottie. Love you.” Race said as Spot echoed the words back to him.
Walking back to room, Spot entered Plums room with a grin. “Race, Smalls, and Medda are all on their way - I told them they’d be moving you upstairs.”
“I’m 6 cms along and they’re going to be moving me upstairs in the next few minutes.” Kat grinned.
“That’s good to hear.” Spot grinned. “I’m going to go make some rounds but I’ll send the crew up when they get here.”
Kat looked at him, reaching over to grab his hand. “You’ll be up there?”
“I wouldn’t miss it.” Spot promised, squeezing her hand and grinning before pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Do you need anything?”
Holding up her cup of ice chips, she grinned. “I’m all set. Go see your patients and we’ll see you upstairs.”
“Love you too Plums.” Spot grinned, blowing her a kiss before walking out of the room.
Stopping at the nurses’ station, he grabbed two charts, flipping through them as Albert gave him a long look. “Everything okay with Plums?”
“She’s six cms dilated and they’re about to move her upstairs. But Race, Smalls, and Medda are on their way so can you keep an eye out for them?” Spot asked as he grinned.
Albert nodded. “Let me know where they move Plums and I’ll send them up.”
“Sounds good.” Spot smiled before heading towards the hub of the ER to make his rounds.
Thirty minutes later, after catching his replacement up with what was going on in the department, he was back sitting at the nurses’ station, taking a moment to himself. “You okay?”
Looking up at Albert, Spot nodded. “Just taking a moment to myself. Didn’t think this night would go this way.”
“Plums got moved up to maternity, room 1184.” Albert smiled, clicking a few things on the computer. “I sent Race, Smalls, and Medda up about twenty minutes ago. Race asked about you.”
Spot grinned. “Of course he did. Alyssa’s here so I’m heading up. Did you let Finch know?”
“Not yet but now that I have a moment to breathe, I’m going to text him.” Albert held up his phone, giving Spot a grin. “We’ll both be up when I’m off work.”
Spot grinned. “From what Race texted, they’ve got us in a private waiting room. It looks like they want to keep the noise levels down.”
“Thanks, Spottie. I’ll be up there soon.” Albert promised, looking up from typing on his phone.
Spot slapped the countertop before making his way over to the elevator before pressing the up button. He texted Race that he was on his way up. Watching the elevator open up, he quickly entered before pressing the 11th floor button.
Soon he was walking off the elevator, looking for the waiting room where his family was. A nurse grinned at him. “Well lookie what the cat drug in? Mister I don’t do babies.”
“Haha, Alicia. It’s good to see you too.” Spot grinned. “Where’s Plums’ family?”
She pointed down the hallway. “We put them in the private room, just down there. Plums is in 1184. I take it you’ll be heading to the waiting room before going to her room?”
“You got it in one.” Spot grinned. “It’s good to see you Alicia. You should come back down to the ER every once in a while.”
She laughed. “And why would I do that? It’s nice and quiet up here.”
A yell came from one of the rooms as Spot raised an eyebrow in her direction with a smirk. “Sure.”
He waved at her before walking down the hallway to the private waiting room. He pushed open the door, peeking his head in. He grinned walking into the room, letting the door close gently behind him. Medda looked up, a grin crossing her face. “We were wondering when you’d get here.”
“Sorry momma, had to wait until my cover got here so I could get her up to speed.” Spot smiled, letting himself get pulled into a hug. Smalls quickly pulled him into a hug before Race hugged him before placing a kiss on his lips.
“Have you checked in on Jack and Kat?” Race asked, bouncing on his toes, eager for news.
Spot shook his head. “Not yet. I thought I’d check in with you guys before going to see them. Do you guys need anything?”
“No, I think we’re good. The nurse has been in here a couple of times checking up on us.” Race grinned. “Why don’t you go check up on them and let us know what’s going on?”
Spot kissed Race once more before leaving the room. He walked down the hallway before pausing in front of the room. He sighed, before walking into the frenzy of the room. He hung back, watching the nurse and the doctor look at the sonogram machine as they ran the doppler across Kat’s stomach. “Katherine, we need to prep you for emergency surgery - you have a Prolapsed umbilical cord and right now we need to get you down to surgery to save both you and the baby.”
With that, the room came alive and soon Katherine’s bed was on the move as Spot and Jack ran behind him. “What’s going on? What’s happening to my wife?”
“Spot, Jack.” Kat cried as they pushed the bed through double doors.
The nurse put her hand up, stopping both men in their path. “You can’t come in here. You’ll have to wait out here.”
Jack watched the nurse walk through the double doors as he carted his hand through his hair, turning to look at Spot, pain, worry, and frustration across his face. “Spottie . . . what’s wrong? What’s happening? Is our child going to be okay?”
Spot pulled Jack into a hug, letting his brother-in-law collapse into tears. “Shhh, Jack. She’s going to be okay.”
“And the baby?” Jack asked, looking up at him with worry in his eyes.
“Do you want it straight?” Spot sighed, leading him over to a set of chairs, looking at Jack dead in the eyes.
Jack collapsed into one before looking at the ground, nodding. “Yeah.”
“Katherine had something called a prolapsed umbilical cord, which is when the umbilical cord drops through her cervix into the vagina ahead of the baby.” Spot sighed. “It can be dangerous for the baby and that’s why the emergency surgery is necessary.”
Jack sighed, throwing his head back against the wall. “Can you go in there with her? I don’t want her to be alone.”
“I will try.” Spot said, pulling out his phone and shooting off a text to Albert and Race, letting them know where Jack was. “Let me see if they’ll let me in there but you have to stay out here.”
Jack nodded, as another round of tears fell down his face, worry evident across his face.
Spot glanced behind Jack at the closed doors before giving him a hug, slapping his hand to his shoulder before walking through the doors. He quickly scrubbed in, throwing on a surgical mask, before looking in the big bay window. “Spot, you can come in.”
He walked into the room and grinned behind his mask at Dr. Smith. “Thank you. I know this is unusual but . . .”
“I figured you’d weasel yourself into this room.” She nodded to him. “Stay up by her head - reassure her and soon we’ll have a baby party.”
Taking a seat on the stool, he reached over and kissed Kat’s forehead. “How are you doing, Plums?”
“Ready to have a baby.” She grinned, looking over at him, worried evident in her eyes. “How’s Jack?”
Spot sighed. “He’s out in the hallway. The family is on their way down to be with him. He’s kinda freakin’ out, Kat. But I told him everything will be alright.”
“Thanks, Spot.” Kat grinned, eyes bright. “Thank you for being there for both of us.”
“There’s no place I’d rather be. Now what do you think you’re having? Final bets.” Spot smirked, as she laughed.
“Jack thinks boy but I think a girl.” Kat sighed, wishing it was all over so she could see her husband and baby. “What do you and Race think?”
Spot laced his fingers with hers giving them a squeeze. “I think girl but Race can’t make up his damn mind and keeps changing. Yesterday was a girl but today was a boy. I think he’s just ecstatic that he’s going to be an uncle and doesn’t really care.”
“That’s what everyone keeps telling me. I’d be happy with either.” Kat smiled. “I just can’t wait to hold them.”
Spot pressed a kiss to her forehead. “You’ll do that in a few minutes.”
True to his word, while gripping her hand, a cry rang out through the surgical room. “Congratulations, Katherine, you have a healthy, beautiful baby.”
Kat looked at him with tears. “Will you go make sure they’re safe and healthy?”
Nodding, Spot stood walking over to the bassinet as they weighed the wrinkly mess of a baby. It was the sweetest sight Spot had ever seen. Just as he turned to tell Kat the gender, monitors started blaring. “We’re losing her.”
Spot abandoned the baby, sitting next to Katherine, leaning close to her ear, his heart pounding rapidly. “Dammit Plums, you better pull through. Jack and your baby need you!”
The next few seconds were tense as the team worked on her. Spot whispered a prayer under his breath as he held tight to her hand, squeezing it every few seconds. Finally the monitors stopped blaring and a collective sigh sounded through the OR. “Get a few bags of O+ blood and get them hanging. She’s good for now but not out of the woods.”
Spot looked over at Dr Smith as she took off her mask. “Spot do you want to introduce this peanut to the family? We’re going to get her down to recovery.”
Unable to speak, he pressed a kiss to Kat’s head, promising he’d be back before standing. Clearing his throat, he looked up at the team. “What are the baby’s stats?”
“Seven pounds, eight ounces, 22 inches long, born at 10:15pm on July 5.” Dr. Smith smiled, handing over a blanket wrapped baby with a blue and pink striped hat on its head.
The team quickly moved Kat into the recovery room. Dr Smith hung back, giving Spot a look. “Once you tell the family, bring the baby and Jack back to recovery.”
He nodded as he pushed through the door of the OR, before walking down the hallway, precious cargo in his arms. “Now baby there’s a lot of people waiting on meet you, but your daddy especially.”
He pressed a kiss to the baby’s forehead before pushing through the double doors, eyes searching for Jack. Race caught his eye first, as he reached over and nudged his brother. “Jack, look.”
If the situation wasn’t so tense, Spot would’ve laughed at how hard and fast Jack’s head snapped up. He staggered to his feet as Race steadied him as they made their way over to Spot with Medda, Smalls, Albert and Finch behind them. “How is she?”
“First things first, Jack, I’d like to introduce you to your daughter. She was born at 10:15pm and she’s 7lbs, 8oz and 22 inches long. She’s got your lungs.” Spot said as Jack peered into his arms and a smile crossed his lips.
The group crowded around Spot to look at the precious baby in his arms. “She’s precious and adorable.”
“C-can I hold her?” Jack asked, clearing his throat. Spot would’ve laughed but it got strangled in his throat.
Nodding, Spot steered him over to the chairs. “Sit down first - it looks like you’re going to fall over.”
Once he was situated, Spot placed the baby in her father’s arms with a grin. “There you go - you look good with a baby, Jackie.”
Jack ran his finger over her hands and face before looking up at Spot. “Thanks. How’s Kat?”
Spot sighed, the weight of the situation catching up to him. “She lost a lot of blood but they’re giving her a transfusion. We’re just waiting on her to wake up. When you’re ready, I’ll take you both back to recovery.”
“But she’s going to be okay, right? I can’t lose her.” Panic was evident in Jack’s voice as he looked at Spot.
Spot bit his lip. “I’m not going to lie - she’s got a tough few days ahead of her but if anyone can pull through, it’s Plums. You have to believe in that Jack. She’s strong and she’ll be yelling at you soon enough.”
Nodding his head, he looked at his daughter before looking over at Medda. “Momma, wanna hold your granddaughter?”
Medda laughed, holding out her hands as Jack expertly transferred the baby out of his and into hers. As soon as Medda had her, Jack pulled Spot into a hug, tears and worry melting away as the two embraced. Spot rubbed Jack’s back as the last two hours frustrations, worries, and scariness came pouring out in tears. Soon Race and Albert embraced the two of them, causing Spot to join in the tears.
Soon Spot tried to step back, wiping his eyes as he looked at Jack. “You okay?”
“Yea.” Jack sniffles, wiping the remaining tears from his eyes. “Thanks.”
Spot grinned. “Anytime. Do you have a name for your daughter?”
“Kat and I had it narrowed down to two. Can we wait until she’s awake?” Jack bit his lip, worry stretched across his face.
Spot nodded. “Of course. I’ll let Dr Smith know. Do you want me to take you back to Kat?”
“In a few minutes. Your husband is getting antsy about holding her.” Jack smirked, watching Race bounce beside Medda. “I’ll grab her if you want to settle Race.”
“Give me the hard job? I see how it is.” Spot complained before looking at his husband. “Race come ‘ere.”
Race left Medda’s side before joining his husband. “Spottie, our niece is freaking adorable. Can we have one?”
“Slow your roll, Race. One step at a time.” Spot gave him a look. “Come sit down beside me.”
Race obliged, immediately lacing his fingers with Spot. “I’m so proud of you - have I told you that lately?”
Spot looked at Race, who’s eyes flowed with sincerity and love. “You haven’t said that lately but what brought this on?”
“Just seeing you walk out here confidently and holding everything together, even though I’m sure you wanted to curl up on the couch and cry your eyes out from exhaustion and fear.” Race leaned over and kissed him. “I love you and am so proud of you for being there for Kat, Jack and our niece.”
Spot swiped at his eyes as additional tears fell down his cheek. “Damn you Racetrack. Making me cry but I love you too.”
“Sap.” Race chided, before leaning over and kissing him. “Now what’s the plan?”
Spot sighed, lowering his voice as he watched Smalls hold the baby. “I’ve got to take the baby and Jack back to recovery then we’ll see what Jack wants to do. He’ll probably want to stay the night so we might need to go get him some clothes and anything else he may need.”
“Do you want to change before you go back?” Race asked, motioning to the duffle bag that was shoved under the chair.
Biting his lip, Spot shook his head. “Eventually, yes but I’m letting Jack dictate what he wants us to do. I think as soon as he sees Kat, it’s going to come crashing down on him. She’s going to be moved to a room in about an hour so you guys will be able to visit.”
“Momma and Smalls said something about going home but Albert and Finch will stick around. I’ll be around for as long as you are.” Race laced their fingers together as Spot gave him a small smile. “Jack needs to call her parents.”
Sighing, Race shook his head. “Is he gonna be up for that?”
“Who knows. Maybe momma will do it.” Spot suggested, knowing Medda had the patience of a saint.
Soon Jack had made his way over to where they sat, baby girl in his arms. “Baby girl, these are your uncles. You already met your Uncle Spottie but this is your Uncle Race and he’s going to spoil you rotten.”
Spot grinned, watching Jack expertly pass the sleeping baby to his brother. Race went still as he adjusted the baby in his arms. “Breathe Racer. We don’t need you passing out. She’s asleep and not looking to wake up anytime soon.”
“Look at your doling out the dad advice already.” Spot smirked as Jack collapsed into a chair beside him. “You need to call Kat’s parents.”
“Momma said she would do it as soon as you came up with an update.” Jack said, sighing while running a hand over his face. “She’s going to be okay, right Spot?”
Spot nudged him with a small smile. “She lost a lot of blood during the c-section so her body is in shock. Once everything regulates she should be awake and fine. She’s tough. Do you want to go back and see her?”
“You’ll stay?” Jack asked, a subtle pleading in his eyes.
Spot nodded. “Race and I aren’t going anywhere. We’ll hang around as long as you want us to. Finch and Albert might as well.”
“Let me see if I can wrestle my daughter back from Race and we can go check up on her mom.” Jack said pushing himself up from the chair before standing in front of Race. “Time’s up Race.”
Looking up from whispering with the baby, Race groaned. “I’m not done telling her all of the secrets.”
“You’ll have the next 18 years to do that.” Jack rolled his eyes, a chuckle escaping his mouth. “Hand her over.”
Spot watched Jack take back the baby before going over to talk to Medda and Smalls as Albert and Finch ventured over to Race and Spot. “What’s the plan?”
“I’m going to take him back to Kat. Race and I are hanging around until he kicks us out.” Spot shrugged.
Jack stopped at the group. “Momma and Smalls are heading out - Finch, Albert don’t hang out, go home. Come back tomorrow. We’re just hanging out until Kat wakes.”
“Will you text us updates?” Albert asked, looking between Spot and Jack.
Nodding, Jack smiled. “Absolutely. Thank you both for being here.”
“As if we’d be anywhere else.” Finch shook his head, pulling Jack and the baby into a gentle hug before Albert did the same. “Let us know if you need anything. You can only eat so much hospital food.”
Nodding, Jack smiled, watching them walk down the hallway before turning to Spot and Race. “Can Race come back with us?”
Nodding, Spot watched Race pick up the duffle bag before motioning them to follow him. Tapping the badge reader with his badge, the door opened and he led them down a hallway before stopping at the desk. “Hey Alicia, have they moved Plums yet or is she still in recovery?”
“They’re getting ready to move her. I don’t know if she has a room number yet.” Alicia said, clicking a few keys on the keyboard. “Looks like she’ll be in her original room - 1184.”
“Thanks Alicia. Will you let Smith know we’re heading that way?” Spot grinned.
Walking down the hallway, he looked at his watch and yawned loudly. He looked at Jack and Race. “You’re the only four people that I’d be up this late for.”
Jack and Race laughed as Spot stopped in front of Kat’s door. “Do you want us to go in?”
Jack nodded, adjusting the baby in his arms. Spot pushed open the door as a nurse gave him a bright smile. “Spottie it’s good to see you.”
“Hey Helen, this is Kat’s husband Jack and brother-in-law, Race. How’s our girl doing?” He asked, eyes on the monitor she was hooked to.
The nurse fiddled with something before giving the men a smile. “All her stats are good. We just need her to wake up. Do you guys need anything? Food, drinks?”
Spot looked at Jack and Race, both who’s eyes were glued to Kat. “I think we’re good now but I’ll let you know if that changes. But could you bring some formula, little miss is going to need to eat soon.”
She nodded and without another word, she left the room, only to return a few minutes later with the premade bottle. Spot grinned at her as she left them alone. “Jack, Spot, take a seat. We’ll be here for a while. Do you want me to take her?”
Jack handed the baby to Spot before collapsing into a chair next to Kat’s bed grabbing her hand, before whispering to her.
Spot sat down, cradling the baby as he got Race’s attention. “Race, go sleep on the couch. You look like you’re gonna collapse.”
“What about you?” Race looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
“I’m a master of sleeping in chairs.” Spot grinned. “I promise I’ll wake you if anything should happen but Jack’s gonna crash within an hour. Little miss and I will hang out while everyone sleeps.”
Race flopped on the couch. “You need to sleep too, Spottie. Are you working tomorrow?”
“Nope, I'm not scheduled again until the 8th. Go to sleep Racer. I’m going to put a little girl in the bassinet and go change.” Spot stood, did that before escaping to the little bathroom to change.
Opening the door, he surveyed the room. Light snores were escaping Race’s mouth as he slept on the couch while Jack was slumped over the bed, clutching Kat’s hand while he slept. Checking on the baby, he smiled seeing her puckered lips as she snoozed. Settling himself in the chair, he scooted himself down so the back of his head rested on the back of the chair and let his eyes close, the comforting beeping rocking him to sleep.
Hours Later
Cracking open an eye, he heard something shift in the room. Letting his feet drop from where they were propped up on the bed, he quickly stretched, groaning as his muscles loosened from the awkward position they were stuck in. His eyes quickly moved around the room. His niece, husband, and brother-in-law were all sound asleep. The door was still shut so it couldn’t have been a nurse. Looking up at bed, he grinned seeing movement.
Pushing himself off the chair, he walked to the other side of the bed and grinned at Kat. “Welcome back. How do you feel?”
Her eyes fluttered open as she took in her surroundings. “Sore. What happened?”
“You lost a lot of blood, they had to give you a blood transfusion. We were just waiting for you to wake up.” Spot grabbed her other hand, giving it a squeeze.
Her eyes flew up to him. “And the baby?”
“Sound asleep, like her daddy and uncle.” Spot grinned. “Sorry, these two are making all kinds of racket.”
She smiled, reaching over running her hand through Jack’s hair. “It’s fine. How worried were they?”
“They were pretty worried. I didn’t find out until afterward since I was with you.” He grinned. “Do you want to see your little girl?”
Her eyes lit up and she nodded. Spot quickly adjusted her bed before walking over to the bassinet and picking up the little girl, who stretched before settling down. “Here you go, mommy Kat, your little girl.”
Once Kat and the baby were settled, Spot walked around the bed to rouse Jack. Crouching down, he put a hand on Jack’s back before rubbing it gently. “Jack, hey Jack.”
Groaning, Jack lifted his head to look at Spot. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, Kat’s awake.” Spot whispered as Jack’s head flew up and looked at his wife and daughter.
Stepping back, he let the three of them have a moment while he went to rouse Race. He crouched beside Race’s head, running his hand through his hair. Race hummed before a groan was released from his lips. “Spottie, stop.”
“Hey, hey. Kat’s awake.” Spot murmured while looking between Race and the new family on the bed. “She just woke up and is meeting her daughter.”
Race’s eyes popped open, looking between his husband and the bed. “She okay?”
“She said she’s sore but other than that she’s fine.” Spot grinned. “I should go let them know but I’ll be right back.”
Pushing himself into a stand, he grinned at Kat and Jack before motioning to the door. “Hey Spot?”
“Yeah Kat?” He paused in his step with a grin.
“Thank you for everything.” She gave him a look as he nodded. “Jack was just telling me everything.”
Redirecting his steps, he headed to the bed, leaning over and pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Anytime, I know you would’ve done the absolute same for Race and me. I’m going to let the desk know you’re awake. Do you need anything?”
“Coffee?” Kat grinned as Spot shook his head.
“I’ll check but I’m guessing you already know the answer to that one.” He gave her a look as Jack and Race both laughed. “But I’ll get you three some.”
Quickly letting the desk know that she was awake, he returned to the room with four coffees before collapsing into a chair with a sigh. “So I’m very happy that you’re awake, but I’ve got to know. What’s our girl’s name?”
“So Jack and I decided we were going to wait until the baby was born before actually deciding on a name as we had it narrowed down to two.” Kat grinned, looking up at her husband. “So, Jack are we going with A or M?”
Jack looked at his daughter with a smirk. “You know I always leaned towards A so I’m voting for that name.”
“Uncle Spot and Uncle Race, may I introduce you to Adelin Charlotte Kelly, Addie for short.” Kat looked between her daughter and the three most important men in her life. “What do you think?”
Race grinned. “It’s perfect. A perfect name for a perfect little girl.”
Jack leaned over, first pressing a kiss to his wife’s forehead before dropping one on his daughter’s cheek. “Welcome to the world, Adelin Kelly.”

The Perfect Morning
You have been asking for it loud and clearly so I decided to write the Sprace baby you’ve all been waiting for. This is part of the “Life in the ER'' Series but a rare moment that doesn’t take place in the hospital. There are curse words and mentions of a hospital/working in a hospital. As always, feedback would be wonderful and would make me very happy. And if you have anything you’d like to see happen in the series, just let me know - I’m always looking for new situations to put our favorite characters into!
April 17, 2021
The house was quiet when he woke. It hadn’t been that quiet in almost six months and his first thoughts were holy shit. The second was questioning the time. He rolled over and looked at the green numbers of the clock - 7:34.
Running a hand over his face, he sighed before letting the hand flop to the other side of the bed. Empty. Cold. Sitting up, he blinked a couple of times, allowing his eyes to scan the room.
“Spottie?” He called, pushing himself off the bed and heading towards the room across the hall.
Pushing open the door, he was surprised to see it was empty. The dark wooden crib they had spent hours debating about sat across from the door, a light blanket thrown over the side. A mint green onesie was haphazardly thrown near the hamper and a stuffed elephant was nearby but otherwise nothing was out of place.
Continuing on his journey, he headed towards the living room thinking his husband and young child could be there but he came up empty once more. The dog was even missing which caused him to pause in his hunt.
At that moment, he fell in love with his husband a bit more. Here it was a rare morning that Spot didn’t have an early morning shift at the hospital; yet he had gotten up, taken care of their child and puppy so he could sleep in a bit.
Their lives were flipped upside down with the adoption of their daughter. It had been a period of adjustment for all of them, especially for their puppy, Sassie. From the moment they brought their little girl home, life had completely changed for the good. The two of them had always been a great team; however, they didn’t know how good of a team they would be until the doctor handed them Mackenzie Jayne Higgins-Conlon and wished them congratulations.
Pouring himself a cup of coffee, Race grinned putting in creamer before heading out to their front porch. He shouldn’t be surprised Spot would do this - it’s just him and his little ways of showing love. Taking a seat, he took a sip of his coffee as he waited for the rest of his family to return from whatever adventure they had gone on.
Relaxing into the chair, he sighed, listening to the birds chirp in the trees as he held the warm mug in his hands. Just as he went to kick his feet up, Sassie came bounding up the stairs, with her leash dragging behind her. Putting his mug on the table, he bent over and rubbed his hands up and down her sides, wishing her a good morning.
“Where’s dad, Sass?” He asked, looking down the street for him. What he saw caught him off guard.
Spot was pushing the jogging stroller that Jack and Kat had gotten them as a shower gift, shirtless, hair pushed back by a headband and sunglasses over his eyes. Race took a moment to publically ogle his husband, appreciating the physique that Spot effortlessly maintained. Race was careful not to let his jaw drop at how utterly gorgeous his husband was. There were very few times he could unabashedly stare at his husband and he was going to take full advantage of it.
Unclipping Sassie’s leash, he opened the front door for her to go inside before he bounded down the stairs to where Kenzie and Spot were. Race couldn’t help but catcall and whistle as he came closer to the two. “Hey good lookin.”
Grinning, Spot looked up from where he was unclipping Mack. “Hey yourself.”
“Have I mentioned how utterly gorgeous you are lately?” Race saunted closer to his husband and daughter with a shit eating grin on his face.
Spot adjusted Mack in his arms before throwing his head back and laughing. “Right now I’m a sweaty mess but thanks for the compliment. I wanted to give you a chance to sleep in since you’ve been taking night duty.”
“Sweaty mess or not, you’re hot. Own that. And thanks, I appreciate it.” Race leaned over and kissed him. “Did little miss enjoy the run?”
Spot kissed him back before handing Mack over to him. He leaned down to grab something out of the bottom of the stroller before giving Race a bright smile. “She was fussy when we first started but seemed to settle down as I got into a rhythm. I did about a 45 minutes run. We ran through town, picked up breakfast before heading back.”
“You’re my hero.” Race said, walking back up the stairs to the front porch. “Do you want a cup of coffee or water?”
Spot waved him off. “I’m going to take a quick shower. Do you need anything before I do that?”
“Nah, we'll just hang out here. If she wants, send Sassie out here.” Race pressed a kiss to Kenzie’s forehead. “Come back out when you’re done.”
Spot dropped kisses to both Race and Mack’s foreheads before slipping into the house, only to open the door again to let Sassie out.
Settling Mack with her back against his chest, Race relaxed in the chair, listening to Mack babble to herself. “Did you have fun with daddy this morning, Kenzie?”
She tried to adjust herself to see Race. He picked her up so she was standing on his legs as she continued her babble. Race continued his conversation with her as she tried to put her fingers in his mouth. He playfully ate them as she dissolved into baby giggles. They continued that game until she caught sight of her puppy.
Soon she was leaning forward to try to pet Sassie. Putting her on the porch floor, she babbled to and crawled over Sassie as the dog watched her young sister protectively.
He heard the door open and close just as he took the last sip of his coffee. He smiled gratefully at Spot as he spied the cups of coffee in his hands. Spot handing him one with a smirk. “Thanks. Feeling better?”
“Much less grimly and sweaty.” Spot took a seat, watching Sassie and Kenzie with a proud smile. “What’s the plan for the day?”
Race shrugged. “As far as I know, there are no plans. Jack and Kat mentioned getting together but nothing was ever put into place.”
“If they don’t reach out, I’m all in favor of a lazy day. We haven’t had one of those in a while so that’s my vote.” Spot said, stretching his legs out in front of him as he reached out and laced his fingers with Race’s.
Race nodded, squeezing their hands. “If I haven’t mentioned it lately, I’m proud of the life we’ve built. Perfect husband, perfect daughter and dog. Jobs we both love and great friends and family.”
“Sap.” Spot was quick to tease him but squeezed his hand. “I love our life too. Love you Racer.”
“Love you too Spottie.” Race leaned over and kissed him. “What did you bring for breakfast?”
Spot chuckled, shaking his head. “It’s always food with you.”
“Not always.” Raising his eyebrows up and down suggestively, Race smirked. “But I’m hungry for food right now.”
Spot pushed himself off the chair before sauntering into the house and returning with the white bag from earlier. “I got a couple of different things - didn’t know what you would be in the mood for.”
“Thanks snookums.” Race opened the bag, pulling out a cinnamon twist donut before taking a bit. “When do you work next?”
“Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday this week.” Spot drug through the bag taking out a donut. “Plums is working Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday with me so it’ll be a good couple of shifts.”
“Kenzie in daycare Wednesday and Friday?” Race inquired trying to keep the schedule fight.
Spot nodded. “Yea. You’ve got what seven weeks left of the school year?”
“I think. Days are starting to blend together.” Race sighed. “I’m just ready for summer.”
“We’ll have to figure out what we’re going to do. I have a couple of weeks of vacation that need to be used up before September.” Spot gave him a look. “Maybe we can head to the mountains or a beach. She’ll love the water.”
Race nodded. “Maybe Kat, Jack, Al, and Finchie would want to do something, at least for a few days.”
“That’ll be fun. We know how much Kenz loves Addie.” Spot grinned, thinking about the trouble the two would eventually get up to, as the two were only 4 months apart.
Race groaned. “No talking about the two of them growing up. They’re 5 and 9 months old and that’s all my poor heart can take.”
“Calm down papa bear. She’s still our little girl and Addie is still our little niece.” Spot squeezed his hand. “But I do love your idea of making it a family affair. Maybe momma and Smalls would want in.”
Race relaxed in his chair, thinking about all the adventures they would have ahead of them. With Spot and Kenzie by his side, he was content and happy. A thought popped into his head as a sly grin crossed his lips. “So, uh, Spottie . . . wanna tell me how you’re such a ripped dad?”
Spot threw his head back laughing before reaching over and shoving Race’s shoulder. “I could but you wouldn’t be able to keep up with me.”
“Is that a challenge?” Race raised an eyebrow in a warning.
Spot snorted loudly. “Race you complain when you have to walk to the mailbox to get the mail - no way you’re running 45 minutes with me.”
“I can kick your ass boxing.” Race gave him a look as Spot sighed. “Want me to reserve the ring for next weekend?”
Picking up Kenzie, Spot gave him a look. “Sure and we can see who’s king of the ring. You’ll always reign supreme running circles around me but I might be able to take you in the ring.”
“Keep up with the trash talk . . . we’ll see who’s still standing and who will get the bragging rights.” Spot gave him a knowing look.
Race held out his hand as Spot interlocked his hand with Race’s with a grin. “You’re on.”
He watched Spot tickle their daughter’s belly as a shrill laugh escaped her mouth. She pushed at his hands as he looked down on her fondly. “Hey Spottie?”
“Yea Race?” Spot looked up from their daughter with a smile on his face.
“If I haven’t said it, you’re a really good dad. I love watching you two interact.” Race said as a fond smile crossed his face.
Spot leaned over and kissed Race. “You’re a really good papa with her. We make a pretty good team, huh?”
Race nodded, reaching over and tickling Kenzie’s stomach as the girl looked at her dads with a gummy smile. In Race’s book, there was no better place he’d rather be than on their front porch with his husband and daughter.
So what did you think? Feedback would be wonderful. If there's something specific you want to see in this verse, feel free to send me a message.

You're Gonna Be a Papa - Life in the ER Series
There were a few requests to see Mack’s birth story. Here you go.
Warnings: hospital visit and swearing
November 6, 2020
His cell phone laid on the table, where he had dropped it moments before. A smirk crossed his face as he processed the information he just received. Looking at the clock, he knew his husband would be walking through the door at any moment. Truth be told, he couldn’t wait to see the look on Race’s face when he told him.
They had been married almost 10 months but they had known they wanted this for the last 6 years, since they started dating. Their life together had been slowly growing - his home becoming theirs as soon as Race moved in, the intertwining hours spent together between their crazy jobs - his as an ER nurse and Race’s as a physical education teacher - somehow they managed to make it work.
The slamming of the backdoor pulled him out of his thoughts as he heard Sassie’s bark and her nails clicking against the hardwood floors as she ran to greet his husband. “Spottie, you here?”
Spot rolled his eyes, knowing full well his navy blue 4Runner was in the driveway. “Yeah, Racer. How was your day?”
“Good. Kids were way too excited for the weekend. Made it hard to actually teach today.” Race slung his bag on the bench they had in the entryway.
Spot grinned as Race walked into the kitchen, grabbing a glass from the cupboard before filling it up with water. He propped his hip against the countertop as he looked at his husband. “What did you do today? You had the day off right?”
“Yeah. Sassie and I slept in before I took her for a run through town. We met Albert, Rex and Romeo for lunch and a bit of doggy playground before coming back here and cleaning off the DVR.” Spot grinned. “Overall a productive day. But listen, you might want to go get changed - we have somewhere we have to go.”
Race groaned, finishing off his water, putting the glass in the sink. “Ugh, really? I was looking forward to sitting on the couch, watching shit TV while we ate pizza.”
“Yes, really. Now go get changed.” Spot grinned, giving him a look.
Race looked at him, dressed in sweats and a hoodie. “Is that what you’re wearing? Where are we going?”
“Yes, that’s what I’m wearing. I’ll tell you along the way. Now go get changed.” Spot gave him a look, shoving his feet into his shoes, grabbing the packed bag before walking out the backdoor to the car.
Opening the backseat, he grinned seeing the newly installed car seat. They had just gotten it installed last weekend so Spot had been driving around with it in the backseat, just in case. Throwing the bag into the backseat, he closed the door, just as Race walked out. “Do I need anything else?”
“It’s all in the car. Let’s go, snookums.” Spot got into the driver’s side, shutting the door as Race joined him.
As soon as his door closed, Race looked at Spot with an eyebrow raised. “Now can I know?”
“We’re heading to the hospital.” Spot smiled. “Our baby is on its way and we’re going to meet them.”
Tears instantly clouded Race’s eyes as he heard Spot. “Shit, really?”
“Yes, shit really.” A watery laugh came from Spot’s mouth as tears clouded his eyes. “You’re gonna be a papa, Tony.”
Race reached out and wiped his eyes. “When did you find out?”
“I literally got the call just before you came into the house.” Spot chuckled. “Amanda was admitted about two hours ago. She still has a while to go but they said we might want to come up to the hospital to wait.”
Sighing, Race shook his head as he leaned over and kissed Spot. “We’ve been waiting so long for this. We’re going to be daddies, Spottie.”
“Yes, yes we are.” Spot kissed him back, as they both tried to get their emotions under control. “You ready?”
Race stole another kiss before nodding. “With you by my side, always.”
The drive to the hospital was quick, each man lost in their own words. Pulling into a parking spot, he threw the car into park before grabbing the bag from the backseat. “Come on, we’re going to go through the ER - Kat’s working today.”
Race followed behind Spot, unfamiliar with the twists and turns of the hospital. Race knew a bit about the hospital, on account of the times he ended up there, but he was completely lost in that moment and was perfectly fine following Spot.
“Spot, thought you had the day off?” Maddie grinned at him as he stepped up to the nurse’s station.
Spot chuckled. “I do but I’m looking for Plums - she around?”
“I think she just went down to grab something from the cafeteria.” Maddie told them. “Do you want me to let her know that you’re here?”
Spot looked at Race who shrugged. “Nah, we’ll head down there. Thanks Maddie.”
Spot turned on his heels, grabbing Race’s hand before they walked down a long hallway. “You okay, Racer?”
“Yea but I could ask you the same question, Spottie.” Race raised an eyebrow in his husband’s direction.
Spot pulled him so they were flushed with the wall. “Nervous, excited, worried, but I’m glad you’re by my side for this. I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.”
Race kissed him quickly, squeezing their linked hands. “Good and I’m all of those as well. Now let’s go find Kat, then we can go upstairs.”
Spot nodded, tugging on his hand as they continued down the hallway, eventually walking into the cafe. Scanning the cafe, Spot’s mouth tugged up in a smile when he spotted her sitting by herself. Spot bounced over to where she was sitting, quickly sitting in a chair as she looked up from her phone. “Spot? What are you doing here, you’ve got the day off.”
“We got a call about Amanda going into labor.” He grinned as Race joined them at the table.
A small squeal escaped Kat’s mouth as she looked between the two. “Serious?”
“Like I’d be here if I didn’t have to be.” Spot rolled his eyes. “How much longer are you working?”
Kat grinned. “I’m so excited for you two. This is a great day. I’m working until 5 but I’ll be up afterwards. Have you let the family know?”
“Not yet. We were going to go up there and see the progress before we let everyone know. I just had to tell you because I knew you’d kill us if we were here and you didn’t know.” Spot grinned at her as she blew him a kiss.
“You’re damn right I would kill you both.” She grinned, standing up, gathering her stuff. “Come on, you two go upstairs and let me know what the progress is.”
She gave them both hugs and a kiss on the cheek as they went their separate ways. The two headed upstairs, checking in with the nurse before finding the waiting room. Taking the bag off his shoulder, Spot collapsed into a chair, sighing as Race did the same.
“What are you thinking about?” Race asked, looking over at Spot while lacing their hands together.
Spot smiled. “Thinking about the names we picked and if they’re going to be strong enough for our daughter or son.”
“Those aren’t locked in stone - we still have time to change them.” Race squeezed their hands. “We can go with other names if you want.”
Shrugging, Spot bit his lip. “We’ll wait until we see them then decide. I never knew how big of a responsibility it was to name someone. That’s the name they’re going to have for the rest of their lives.”
“It’s monumental when you stop and look at it. But whatever name we give them, they’re going to grow into it and make it their own.” Race smirked. “And any child of ours will be alright with whatever name we give them.”
The opening of the door caught their attention as a nurse came in and headed towards them. “Spot, it’s good to see you. I heard you were waiting in here.”
“Hi Kristie. It’s good to see you. This is my husband Tony.” Spot introduced, looking over at Race. “Kristie has been trying to convince me for years to come up to labor and delivery instead of the ER.”
Kristie smiled at the two of them. “A valiant effort but I’ve failed every time. But I wanted to come give you guys an update. Amanda is getting ready to start pushing so we will have a baby party soon, so if you want anyone up here, I’d give them a call.”
Nodding, Spot and Race grinned at one another. “Thank you Kristie. Will you let us know when the baby is here?”
“I will. Do you two need anything in the meantime?” She smiled at them.
Spot shook his head before looking at Race. “I think we’re all set at the moment, but thank you.”
She left the two of them, as Race over at Spot. “Should we give the family a call?”
“Do you want momma up here now or in a bit?” Spot raised an eyebrow at him. “I mean I’m all for having them up now but I’m leaving it up to you.”
Race chuckled. “That means if I say later, and momma finds out, she’ll kill me and not you.”
“Pretty much.” Spot giggled.
Race grabbed his phone, typing up a text message to Albert, Jack, Medda, and Smalls before pocketing the phone. “There, done.”
“You texted your family that our child is on their way.” Spot’s eyes were wide. “I’m not going to stand in momma’s way when she wants to kill you.”
Race grinned confidently. “She’s not going to kill me.”
“And you’re so sure about this, how?” Spot countered raising an eyebrow.
Smirking, Race raised an eyebrow in challenge. “Bet you $20 that she’s not going to kill me?”
“You’re on!” Spot held out his hand for Race to shake as the waiting room door opened, drawing their attention away from one another. “Jack! You got down here quickly.”
Jack hugged both of them with a smirk. “I might have gotten a text message from my wife who demanded I get my butt down here.”
“Where Addie?” Spot asked, noticing Jack was alone.
Joining them on the couch where they sat, Jack smiled. “Her grandparents are watching her for a bit. They were going to watch her tonight as Kat and I had a date night planned but they got Addie a bit earlier than planned.”
“I’m sure they loved that.” Race replied dryly, giving them a smirk.
Jack chuckled. “They do alright. Luckily, Kat’s sister Amelia is in town and staying with them so she is spending some quality time with her niece. Kat said she’ll be up soon - the ER just got hit with a couple of ambulances so once it calms down she’ll be up.”
Race pulled Jack into a conversation about something at school. Spot watched the two of them, both so animated in their conversation. Spot couldn’t believe he was in that room, waiting on the birth of their daughter or son. Race and him had had several conversations about what they wanted, Race desperately wanting a daughter where he was more nonchalant about what he wanted. He didn’t care, as long as they were healthy.
He was pulled from his thoughts as the door was slowly pushed open. He instinctively stood, anxiously waiting on news. He felt Race come up beside him, as they both looked towards the door.
Kristie stood in the doorway with a pink and blue striped bundle in her arms. “Alright daddies, who wants her?”
Race and Spot both looked at one another as Race stepped back. Kristie grinned at Spot, expertly handing over the bundle to his awaiting arms.
“Did you say it’s a girl?” Race asked, stepping up to Spot’s side to look at the baby.
Kristie at the smitten men. “Yes, a little girl. She was born at 4:37pm. She weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces and is 21 inches long. She has all ten fingers and toes.”
“She’s precious, Spottie.” Race reached around his husband to slip his finger in her hand. “Look at her long fingers.”
Spot adjusted her slightly in his arms, looking at Race. “She’s perfect, papa.”
“She is, dad.” Race cooed at her.
Kristie looked at the two of them. “Do you guys need anything?”
“I don’t think so. We’ll let you know when we’ve decided on a name.” Spot grinned at her as she nodded.
Race’s eyes went wide. “Shit, we’ve got to name her.”
Spot turned to face Race. “Do you want to hold her?”
Race looked at the ground, suddenly bashful. “I don’t want to drop her.”
“Sit down Race.” Spot nodded to the seat beside his brother. “You’ve held Addie; our baby is just a bit smaller than Addie.”
Waiting for Race to be settled, Spot handed him the baby girl as Race cradled her. “Breathe Racer. You’re not going to drop her.”
“She's our daughter, Spottie.” Race’s voice was full of awe and amazement.
Spot fell more in love with Race as he watched his normally rambunctious husband sit still and peacefully held their daughter.
“I thought you two had names picked out.” Jack smiled, breaking Spot out of the little bubble he had.
Spot nodded. “We do but we aren’t sure if those names will fit her personality.”
“She’s content to sleep at the moment.” Race grinned, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
Spot nodded. “So do we go with MJ or DA? Or do we go with something else?”
Race mouthed both names while looking at their daughter. “I think MJ will be a good name for her.”
“You sure?” Spot wanted to make sure. That was the name he suggested and he wanted to make sure Race was sure.
Race nodded. “Welcome to the world, Mackenzie Jayne Higgins-Conlon.”
Spot loved how the name flowed off Race’s tongue as he softly spoke it. Race looked up at his big brother. “Do you want to hold her, Jackie?”
Jack, who had suddenly become emotional at seeing the two become parents, could only nod. Race stood up, crossed the room and gently handed Mack over to her uncle.
“Oh little girl you’re precious.” Jack cooed, expertly cradling his new niece. “Hi Mack.” He looked between Spot and Race. “That is a nickname right?”
Spot chuckled. “That’s one of them. We were thinking of MJ and Kenzie as well. I’m sure she’ll have more as she grows.”
The door opened, grabbing Spot’s attention as he smiled at Kat. Her hand was over her mouth as she walked into the room. “The baby’s here?”
“She is.” Spot said, standing up, meeting her as she threw her arms around his shoulder, squeezing him in a hug. “Mackenzie Jayne.”
Pulling away, Kat wiped away her tears, looking over to where her husband sat with the baby in his arms. “Aww her name is perfect. Congratulations to you both.”
“Do you want to hold her?” Spot whispered, looking at his best friend.
She grinned before nodding. Spot left her side, walking to Jack to take Mack from his arms. Walking slowly over to Kat, he transferred his daughter to his best friend’s arms.
“Aww boys she’s precious.” Kat smiled, looking at the baby’s pouty lips. “When can you go home?”
Race shrugged. “Kristie hasn’t told us yet.”
“I’m guessing she’ll have to stay in the hospital tonight and part of the day tomorrow before she’s released to us.” Spot smiled. “You look good with a newborn in your arms, Kat.”
She immediately looked at Jack who had a wolfish look on his face. “Do not get any ideas, Jack Kelly. We have a four month old at home and we’re not ready for a second one. We have a new niece that we can love on.”
“Come on Kat.” Jack whined, grinning at his wife.
Shaking her head, she adjusted Mack in her arms. “No, Jackson.”
“Ha! She pulled out your full name.” Race laughed, as Jack shoved his shoulder in retaliation.
“Boys.” The sharp voice came from the doorway as the four of them looked up.
Medda, Smalls, Albert, and Finch all stood there grinning at them. “Don’t make me separate you. You may be grown adults but I’m still your momma.”
“Hi Momma.” Race and Jack grinned happily, getting up to greet their momma before Medda narrowed her eyes on the bundle in Kat’s arms.
“Momma, I’m a papa.” Race excitedly told her as she pulled him into a hug. “Kat’s hogging her but I’m sure if you ask her sweetly, she’ll give up your newest granddaughter.”
Medda looked over at Kat with a smile before looking at her youngest son, narrowing her eyes at him. “Kat is snuggling your adorable daughter at the moment, which is fine. I have an issue with the fact that I received a text message from you letting me know that your child was on the way.”
Race had the decency to look guilty. “I’m sorry momma.”
“Next time, I expect a phone call.” She gave him a look before looking over at Kat. “Now hand over that precious baby girl.”
Kat handed Mack over to her grandma before stepping back, watching Medda coo over the little girl. She felt Jack slip his hand into hers, giving it a squeeze.
Kat looked around the room, smiling at Albert and Finch, walking over to them. Albert gave her a side hug, grinning. “How was the ER today?”
“Just because you and the new papa over there had the day off, it was okay. I got slammed in the last hour of my shift.” Kat shook her head. “It’s like they know when shift change is happening.”
Albert chuckled. “Well some of them are frequent flyers so I wouldn’t be surprised if they did know the shift changes.”
“Too true.” Kat nodded. “Did you hear what they named her?”
Finch and Albert both shook their heads. “Mackenzie Jayne. I’ve heard both Mack and MJ thrown around as nicknames. Good luck getting her away from Medda - I don't think she’s going to give her up willingly.”
Her gaze landed on Spot and Race standing on either side of Medda, smiling at their daughter, sleeping soundly in her grandmother’s arms.
“Yeah we’re going to have to fight Medda for her.” Albert raised his voice, causing Medda to look up at him.
She narrowed her eyes in his direction. “If you want her, I’ll happily hand her over to you.”
Albert skipped across the room, stopping at Medda’s side. “Hand her over momma.” He adjusted Mack in his arms as his face softened. “Oh Mack, you’re a sweetheart. You’re so precious.”
“Who knew that Albert would become a softie mushball around an infant?” Jack asked, not so quietly.
Albert looked up at him with eyes wide. “You’re one to talk, Kelly. You were a pile of mush when you first met Addie. Big, tough Jack Kelly, cooing to a baby, just like that from zero to 100.”
Spot came over to where she was standing and grinned at her. “Who knew a new baby girl would make the men turn to cooing softies?”
“I did. You all did it when Addie was born and I knew it was going to happen again, regardless of whether you baby was a boy or a girl.” She smirked, looking over at him. “Has your mind settled down at all or is it racing with the oh hell what do I do now scheme?”
Running a hand over his face, Spot sighed. “It’s still running with the ‘oh hell what do I do now’ scheme. Will my mind ever shut off now that I have a newborn?”
“It hasn’t in four months so when I know, I’ll let you know.” Kat smirked. “You’ll figure out how to balance your day job with your full time job as a parent. Let me give you a hint, she’ll always be in the back of your mind. She’ll always be there waiting at the end of the day for you to walk through the door.”
Groaning, Spot shook his head. “Great, another person to distract me.”
“But it’s in the best way possible, Spottie.” She bumped his hip with hers. “Look at Race and look at Mack. That’s your world, everything else will just settle in and become part of that world.”
Spot looked at how happy his husband was before looking at Mack, now in FInch’s arms. “When did you become so smart, Kelly?”
“About the time I graduated from college and became a PA.” She smirked. “But I’m still learning. The whole being a mother is still teaching me stuff. But I will tell you one thing, you thought nights in the ER were a difficult thing - you haven’t seen anything until your child throws a rager at 2 in the morning, screaming at the top of her lungs.”
Another groan escaped his mouth. “Great, that’ll be the time I’m texting you.”
“Don’t. Addie is finally sleeping through the night and if you wake her, I will drive her over to your house and drop her off. Mark my words, Spot Higgins-Conlon.” She pointed her finger at him, giving him daggered eyes.
“Calm your jets momma bear.” Spot wrapped her in a side hug, gently squeezing her side. “But do you want to know what I’ve been most excited about since she was handed to me?”
Kat looked over at him. “What’s that?”
“Watching her and Addie grow up. They’re going to be thick as thieves.” Spot’s eyes went wide at the thought. “They’re going to be the best of friends.”
Kat chuckled. “Well when your daughter convinces my daughter to sneak out, I’m glad I’ll have someone up at all hours worrying with me.”
“What makes you think my daughter is going to be the one convincing anyone to sneak out?” Spot shook his head. “You take that back, Katherine Kelly.”
Shaking her head, she grinned. “You’re right, they will be the best of friends and it’ll be fun watching them grow up together. And I do think that you’ll have someone up during all hours of the night worrying about them but at least we have one another . . . . and wine. Wine makes everything better.”
“If I haven’t said it yet, you’re the best friend I’ve ever had and I’m glad I’m on this journey with you.” Spot smiled.
“Backacha, Spottie.” She grinned, watching the family try to convince Finch it was time to give up Mack so someone else could have a turn.
She knew that with Spot, Race, Jack and the rest of the family by her side, the two girls would turn out just fine. But with each of their pasts, she was worried about which genes would get passed on. However, that was a worry for a different day. There was a new baby girl and two new daddies to celebrate.
Thank you for reading. What did you think? Feedback would be wonderful and much appreciated.

"Is it too much to ask for something great?" For whoever you'd like :)
There’s cursing in here. This is the continuation of my Newsies Life in the ER Series. You can catch up here. We check in on Albert and Finch in this one. There’s some swearing in this one.
January 19, 2021
It had been a hell of a year, since the first COVID case was discovered in the United States. It had been eight months since he saw his first case at the hospital. He was ready for a solid week off with no plans, other than a road trip, catching up on Netflix shows and hanging out with his husband.
He pushed back from the computer with a sigh, giving Spot a look. “Need anything before I leave?”
Spot grinned, shaking his head. “No, but enjoy your time off. I’m insanely jealous, by the way.”
“Your time is coming - two weeks then I’ll be the jealous one.” Albert grinned, watching a chart fly by on the desk. Looking up, he grinned at Plums who maneuvered into a chair. “How’s that baby girl of yours? Has she figured out what sleep is?”
Her and Jack had welcomed Adelin Charlotte Kelly back in July. She was welcomed by many honorary aunts and uncles. Her birth was one the ER wouldn’t forget for a really long time.
Plums sighed. “She loves to throw ragers between 1 and 3 am. She’s got the lungs of her father. Jack was up with her while I got to sleep blissfully while she screamed her head off.”
“Racer and I told you we would take her for a weekend if you want.” Spot reminded her, giving her a big grin. “All you have to do is say yes.”
Plums grinned, pursing her lips. “Let me talk with Jack and I’ll let you know. Just make sure you don’t work the next day after you have her. She loves her ragers.”
“Duly noted.” Spot grinned. “We love her and she will be fine. Al, what are you going to be doing on your vacation?”
Albert leaned back in the chair. “Finch and I are going on a road trip up to Cold Springs for a few days before lazily lying on the couch catching up on Netflix and trying out a few recipes Finch wants to try.”
“What’s up in Cold Springs? I’ve heard it’s gorgeous in the summer but won’t it be colder than here.” Plums looked over at him with an eyebrow raised.
Albert laughed, raising his own eyebrows, grinning. “Finch spent his childhood up in Cold Springs - he always talks about the cute town and little shops along with some great skiing. And, yes it’s cold up there but that’s what they make fireplaces and cozy blankets.”
Spot and Plums both rolled their eyes and laughed at Albert’s expression. “Thanks but we didn’t need to know that.”
“You asked.” Albert grinned. “Now if you don’t have anything for me, I’m heading out.”
They both yelled for him to have a great vacation before he headed to the locker room before clocking out. With a final wave, he headed out of the Emergency Room, heading to his Subaru. Unlocking the car, he threw his bag in the back before getting in.
The car ride home was quiet, him relaxing, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. Pulling into the driveway, he sighed, getting out of the car, walking into the house. He heard the familiar jingle of Rex’s collar, kicking off his shoes before letting the black Lab out of his crate. The dog danced at his feet as he made his way over to the backdoor to let him out.
Making his way to the bedroom, he quickly changed out of the scrubs and into sweatpants and a hoodie. Making his way out to the living room, he let Rex back in, quickly changing his water bowl before collapsing onto the couch. Digging his phone out of his sweatpants, he aimlessly scrolled through his social media.
He felt Rex jump off the couch before starting to bark, causing Albert to look up, realizing that two hours had already passed. He heard the door open as Rex’s excited paws pad on the floor as Finch’s bag hit the hit. Albert smiled hearing Finch talk to Rex, reassuring him he was home for the night. “Hey you.”
Albert pushed himself off the couch, grinning at Finch as he made his way over to him. “Hey yourself. How was your day?”
“Good. It was good to wrap some things up before vacation.” Finch grinned, kissing him again. “How was yours?”
Albert shrugged, sitting back down on the couch. “Two gunshot wounds and a few stitches. Just an average day in life.”
“That’s your average day . . . not most Americans.” Finch grinned, laughing. “Have you been home long?”
He nodded. “Like two hours. Spot and Plums pushed me out telling me they’re jealous of us having a vacation.”
“Have you thought of dinner?” Finch asked, loosening his tie, giving his husband a look while cocking his eyebrow.
Albert had the decency to look a bit guilty. “No . . . I got caught up in a game with Racer and lost track of time.”
“Feel like anything in particular?” Finch asked, heading to the bedroom as he unbuttoned his shirt, giving Albert another look.
Albert threw his head back against the couch, looking up at the ceiling as he flipped through the possibilities for their dinner. Nothing sounds amazingly great to him so he figured he’d leave it up to Finch to decide. “Babe?”
Looking up, a wolfish smile crossed Albert’s face at how utterly gorgeous his husband was. Finch was dressed in ratty sweatpants and an old hoodie from their college days. “What’s up?”
“What do you want for dinner?” Finch joined him on the couch, lacing his fingers with his. “You alright, something seems off?”
Albert shrugged. “I don’t care what we do for dinner - nothing really sounds good. And all is good.”
“Uh huh . . .” Finch gave him a long look, squeezing his hand. “I’m ordering pizza for dinner then we’re going to have a long talk.”
Albert watched Finch pull out his phone, call their favorite pizza place before ordering their usual - a pepperoni pizza with breadsticks and a two liter of Pepsi. Hanging up the phone, Finch dropped it on the coffee table, looking at Finch. “I’m not going to bug you but what’s going on Albert?”
“What do you mean?” Al looked at Finch, biting his lip.
Finch sighed. “You’ve been quiet for the last couple of days and distant for a bit. I have been waiting for you to come to me but you haven’t said much outside of good morning, goodnight, and a text here and there. What’s bugging you, Albert?”
“I’ve been doing some thinking.” Albert started, biting his lip. “Have you thought about where you want our life to go and what you want out of it?”
“I want you and I want the life that we talked about in college.” Finch smiled. “The one that we were going to go on vacation with the destination picked by throwing a dart at a map. The one that we adopted a dog, hours spent on debating which one we wanted, only to go to the shelter to pick out Rex. The one that you come home and tell me about your hospital days and try to gross me out by talking about the goriness of the job. And the one that you're completely and utterly head over heels in love with me.”
Albert grinned, thinking back on the times they would sit under the stars and talk. He looked over at Finch, biting his lip. "Is it too much to ask for something great?"
The words were quiet as they left Albert’s mouth that it was difficult for Finch to hear. “Wanna say that again?”
“Is it too much to ask for something great?” Albert said louder as he looked down at their linked hands.
Finch faltered for a moment, not expecting those words to come out of his husband’s mouth. His mouth opened and closed for a second, not sure what to say to him. “You don’t have to say anything . . . just voicing the question.”
He looked at Albert, hurt across his face. “When did you stop telling me about your thoughts and ideas? One thing I’ve always prided myself in our relationship is how much you and I always talk and work things out that are bugging us.”
“We were talking about greatness at work. One of our docs is retiring and they were talking about how great his career was and how great he is walking away.” Albert started. “I’ve been thinking about how I can have something great. I love you and I love the life we’ve built. All I want is something great.”
“Babe.” Finch paused, shifting in the couch, squeezing his hand. “I think the life we have together is pretty great. I think it’s great that I get to come home to you, to Rex, and tell you about my day. I think it’s great that I can call you my husband and I know that you’re always going to be by my side and be there for me. What isn’t so great about what we have?”
Biting his lip, Albert shook his head. “Do you feel like there’s something we’re missing?”
“At this moment, no. I love our comfortable lifestyle, our jobs are great and were in a good spot.” Finch raised an eyebrow. “How long have you been thinking about adding kids to our life?”
A gasp escaped Albert’s mouth as a smile crossed his lips. “Only a few weeks. I see what Jack and Kat have with Addie and I’ve started thinking about us. We always talked about having kids but it didn’t become real until a few weeks ago.”
“We’ve been married for six months, Al. Do you want to add kids to our life so quickly?” Finch asked. “We can spoil Addie rotten for a bit longer . . .”
Sighing, Albert threw his head back against the couch. “I want kids but at times I feel like we’re being left behind. Race and Spot have been talking about kids as have Romeo and Specs. We’re not even at that point yet.”
“We’re also 26 years old.” Finch bit back, giving him a look. “Since when do we set our lives based on our friend’s lives and what they’re doing? I am starting to get the feeling that there’s something deeper going on Albert. Please just tell me.”
Unlacing his fingers from Finch’s, Albert tapped his knee. “Okay . . . don’t kill me when I tell you . . .”
“You can’t start a sentence like that, Albert.” Finch raised an eyebrow at him. He slid closer to Albert, pulling him into his arms. “Just tell me Albert, I’m really starting to worry.”
The doorbell interrupted them as Finch dropped a kiss on Albert’s head. Pushing off the couch, he retrieved the pizza, breadsticks, and the soda pop before dropping them on the coffee table. Finch took a deep breath, going into the kitchen to get two glasses of ice, paper plates, and napkins before dropping back onto the couch beside Albert. “Alright snugs, talk to me.”
Grabbing a slice of pizza and a breadstick, Albert relaxed on the couch with a sigh. “I had a doctor’s appointment a few days ago - just the annual physical. But there was something in my blood work that has my doctor concerned.”
“Concerned? What is it?” Dropping his plate onto the coffee table, shifting to look at Albert, Finch pursed his lips in concern.
“My white blood cell count was high.” Albert sighed, tears crowding his eyes. “But I feel fine and haven’t been sick lately. My doctor is running additional tests and I’m in a waiting period. What if it’s more serious?”
Pulling Albert into his arms, he ran his hand through his hair. “Thank you for telling me. What do you always tell your patients - don’t jump to conclusions. It could be that there’s something going on with your white blood cells that isn’t related to an illness.”
Pressing a kiss to Albert’s head, Finch sighed. “So you decided to bring up thinking about everything that you haven’t achieved yet to cover the fact that you’re potentially sick? Albert, I promised you, in sickness and in health that I will love you always. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Yeah that wasn’t very smart of me.” Albert agreed, with a sad smile. “I just didn’t know how to tell you.”
Finch ran his hand through his hair, chuckling. “How about next time you have news to deliver you just tell me? Yes, it may scare me but I’m not going to run; those vows and you mean too much to me.”
“Deal.” Holding out his hand, Albert smiled. “Do you want to continue our discussion of kids?”
Finch sighed. “How about we get through this hiccup in our lives first before we circle back to the kids front? We both know we want kids, that’s not even a question but the timing, we’re going to need to discuss that in more detail.”
Nodding, Albert smiled. “That sounds like a plan. We make a pretty good team.”
“We sure do.” Finch leaned over and kissed Albert. “I love you, snugs.”
“Love you too Finchie.”
Four Days Later
The door closed behind him as he kicked off his shoes. Walking into the kitchen, he placed the vase of flowers on the counter before looking around. The house was quiet as he peeked his head into the living room. Albert and Rex were curled up on the couch, both sound asleep causing Finch to grin brightly.
He walked into the bedroom, changing into sweats and a hoodie before walking out and kneeling next to the couch. He ran his hand through Rex’s fur as the dog looked up at Finch as his tail started thumping. Moving to run his hair through Albert’s hair, Finch grinned listening to Albert’s breath hitch as he peeked an eye open. “Hey.”
Finch’s smile widened at the grogginess of Albert’s voice. “Hey yourself. Long day?”
“Tough day. We lost a patient today.” Albert sighed. “I came home and cuddled with Rex and must’ve fallen asleep.”
Pressing a kiss to his forehead, Finch lightly scratched Albert’s scalp, smiling hearing him sigh in contentment. “How was your day, Finchie?”
“I got an embarrassing bouquet of flowers but glad you got some good news about your tests.” Finch grinned. “Did you really need to send the flowers?”
Albert laughed, pushing himself into a seated position. “Yes, I could’ve called you and told you the news but thought you might like the flowers. I would’ve loved to see your face when they got delivered.”
Fishing his phone from his back pocket, Finch opened it tilting it for Albert to look at. “Ask and you shall receive. Amelia took a photo and sent it to me after the fact. Hey, Albie?”
“Yeah Finchie?” Albert looked up from the photo with a smile on his face.
“I’m really glad you’re going to be okay.” Finch smiled. “You just have to take an antibiotic, right? Nothing else?”
Albert smiled. “Just an antibiotic for a few days and a check up in three months. I’m okay, Finchie. But if you want, I’ll give Katherine the report and she can talk to you about it.”
“You’d let Katherine do that?” Finch asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
Albie smiled and nodded. “If it gives you peace of mind, then yes, I’d let our friend do that. She’d tell you the same thing that I just told you. I’m going to be just fine, Finchie.”
Pulling him off the couch, Finch pulled him into his arms with a laugh before kissing him. “I love you Albie.”
“I love you too Finchie.” Albert laughed, pushing himself on his tiptoes to kiss Finch. “Now can we talk about kids?”
Laughing, Finch nodded, stilling Albert in their awkward dance. “We have all the time in the world but yes we can talk about kids, assuming you want to be a dad.”
“I was thinking a papa more like it but yes, I want to raise kids with you Patrick Cortes-DaSilva.” Albert kissed him with a passionate furish.
Finch chuckled. “And I want to raise kids with you too, Albert Cortes-DaSilva. I love you Albie.”
“And I you, Finchie forever and always.”
Thanks @cutesiewooren for sending this in!! Feedback will be amazing!

Coffee Outing Gone Terribly Wrong - Life in the ER Newsies Series
The RedFinch meeting from this story that you’ve been waiting for!  There is cursing in this section! Also, there are some mentions of stitches and blood in this one.
June 2016
It was a perfect Spring day. The temperatures were finally warming up and the sunshine was peaking through a couple of stray clouds. It was also the perfect day for Albert and Race to meet up for their weekly best friend date. But what Albert didn’t anticipate was Race’s new skateboard.
“You’re telling me that Spot, the nurse, got you that for your birthday?” Albert asked, raising an eyebrow at his best friend. “You’re a walking disaster, why would he aid in your hazards?”
Race grinned happily. “He didn’t exactly get this for me. He told me to pick anything out and I picked this out.”
“But you’ve been known to trip over air. Why would you add wheels to that tripping hazard?” Albert looked over at him, shaking his head.
His best friend’s face fell a little. “I’m hurt that you don’t have confidence in me, Albie.”
“Need I remind you about the many times you’ve visited Kat, Spot, and myself in the Emergency Room?” He looked at Race. “Do you know how many times our hearts have stopped when either you or Jack show up hurt?”
Race grinned. “But this isn’t going to be one of those times. Spottie got me a helmet and pads as well. He almost bought a roll of bubble wrap but didn’t at the last moment.”
“You need a giant bubble ball.” Albert mumbled under his breath as he watched Race put a tentative foot on the skateboard before pushing off, actually balancing on the board.
Albert jogged to keep up with him as they maneuvered the streets. Albert was glad that he was a runner by nature, easily being able to keep up with his best friend. Stopping at a crosswalk, he looked at Race. “Stop for coffee up ahead?”
Race nodded, skating across the street with a gleeful yell. Albert shook his head, jogging to keep up, only stopping at the coffee shop. Hopping off the board, Race stuck his tongue out at Albert with a laugh. “What was that for?”
“For having such little faith that I wouldn’t be able to do that without hurting myself.” Race said with a laugh, picking up the board before walking into the shop.
Albert followed behind him. “The afternoon is still young. Spottie working today?”
“Yeah, him and Kat are working until midnight. I kinda hate that they work nights.” Race admitted, scratching the back of his neck as he looked at Albert.
Shrugging, Al nodded. “I feel you. They moved me to days a few weeks ago and though I love it, it’s an adjustment. Besides, days are much calmer than nights were.”
“Huh, I would’ve thought days would be crazier than nights.” Race said stepping up to order his coffee, giving a glance at Albert, letting him know he was picking up the tab.
Albert shook his head, placing his order, looking at Race. “Nah, nights are much crazier; people do weird shit in the middle of the night, knowing the ERs don’t close their doors.”
“That’s true.” Race nodded, moving down the line to wait for their coffees. “Ever thought about moving on from Emergency Medicine?”
Their names were soon called as they grabbed their drinks before heading outside to a table. Race dropped his board so that it was under the table before looking at Albie, his questions still hung in the air. “No, I think I would be bored if I moved on from Emergency Medicine. Though it’s crazy, there’s never a dull moment.”
“You, Kat, and Spottie all have that in common.” Race said, sipping on his coffee. “Damn that’s good.”
Albert chuckled, taking a sip of his own. “That is good. You done for the summer?”
“Yeah, exams were given last week and I spent the weekend grading them so I’m free.” Race grinned. “Driver’s training starts up in two weeks so I’ll be busy with that but it’ll be good.”
Albert couldn’t say anything at that moment because Race’s skateboard had been pushed out slightly from under the table that a (incredibly good looking) stranger slipped on it as he was walking by, effectively spilling his coffee as he fell to the ground.  Pushing back from the table, Albert rushed to the ground, looking over the stranger. “Are you okay?”
“Damn that was a wicked fall.” Race commented, kneeling on the ground next to Albie, giving his friend a wide eyed look.
The stranger slowly opened his eyes, groaning at the fall before carefully pushing himself to a seated position. “What the hell happened?”
“You slipped on a skateboard, falling to the ground, spilling your coffee everywhere.” Race supplied.
Albert gave him a look. “Will you get the gloves out of my bag?”
The guy’s eyes went wide, looking over at Albert, who just smiled. “The name’s Albert and I’m a nurse, do you mind if I check you for injuries? You hit your head pretty hard. That idiot is my best friend, Race. What’s your name?”
“I’m Finch.” He said, grimacing at the pain.
Albert took notice, giving him a look. “What hurts?”
“The back of my head and my arm.” Finch said as Race handed a pair of purple gloves to Albert.
He quickly looked over Finch’s arm but didn’t see anything worrisome. It wasn’t until he felt the back of his head that Albert started to worry. Taking a look, he saw the cut along with the blood. “It seems as if you’ve cut open the back of your head, it doesn’t look too bad but you will need stitches.”
Finch groaned but nodded at Albert’s assessment. “My car is right over if you want to drive me to the hospital.”
Albert nodded, looking over at Race. “Grab the shirt out of my bag and we’ll use it to keep pressure on the wound. Race, text Spottie and tell him we’re coming in.”
“He’s going to kill me Albie.” Race whined, giving his best friend a look as he handed him the shirt.
Albert shrugged, pressing the shirt to Finch’s head. “That’s your problem; I wanna give him a heads up.”
Finch watched the two with wide eyes. “Why do I feel like I’m missing something?”
“Because most people are when they meet us.” Albert said, helping him to his feet. “I work at the Memorial ER with Race’s boyfriend Spot. Race is giving Spot a heads up that we’re coming in . . . Race is somewhat accident prone so anytime he’s hurt a heads up is usually given.”
Finch chuckled, hissing in the immediate pain that came shortly after. “How many stitches are we talking about?”
Nearing the car, Albert pulled away the shirt, looking at the cut. “Probably five or so. You got lucky that it isn’t any bigger. Race, you coming?”
The three quickly got into the car, Race driving as Albert held the shirt to Finch’s head. Before long, they were pulling up to the bay doors. Albert helped Finch out as Race went to park the car. Walking slowly, Albert glanced at Spot waiting at the doors with a gurney. After helping Finch onto the bed, Spot gave Albert a look.  “What happened?”
“Your idiot boyfriend’s skateboard was poking out from the table and Finch here, slipped on it, fell to the ground where he busted open his head. He’ll need stitches and was complaining about his arm but I didn’t see anything.” Albert said as Spot looked him over as they headed towards a room.
Nodding at Al’s assessment, Spot gave Albert a look. “And where is said idiot boyfriend? Did you leave him for dead?”
“Nah, he’s parking Finch’s car.” Albert stepped back, taking off his used gloves before grabbing another pair. “He feels really bad. But the bigger question is why did you go along with the skateboard?”
Spot glanced at Albert. “Because the idiot wouldn’t shut up about it so I figured he got one, use it for a few times then lose interest in it.”
“Brilliant deduction, dear Watson.” Albert mumbled as Finch chuckled at the two.
Spot’s eyes went wide looking at Finch. “On a scale of 1-10, how much pain are you in?”
“Like a 4.” Finch said as Spot nodded.
The curtains were thrown open as Kat and Race joined the crew. “For once, I’m thankful Race isn’t in that bed. Al, isn’t it your day off?”
“Yeah Plums but I happened to be at the scene of the crime when it happened.” Albert grinned at his favorite coworker. “Finch, this is Katherine Plumber, Physician Assistant . . . she’ll take good care of you.”
She stepped up closer to the bed, giving him a look. “Whatever happened, I apologize, especially since Race was involved. Now what hurts?”
“Back of my head and my right arm.” Finch said, looking between the people within the room. He was definitely missing something, though he couldn’t tell what that was.
Taking a light out of her pocket, she looked at the back of his head before whistling. She quickly moved onto his arm. “Finch, you’ll need stitches, Albert can help you out with those. I want a scan of his arm, it doesn’t feel like anything’s broken but let’s rule it out. Also, Spot start an IV, I want a bag of saline in him before we discharge him. Do you have any questions, Finch?”
“How long am I in here for?” Finch asked.
Plums looked at the clock before smiling. “You’ll be out of here by 5 tonight . . . a couple of hours. As soon as the scan is done on your arm, I’ll take a look at it. If it’s broken or fractured, we’ll put a cast on it; if it’s just tender, we’ll put a brace on it. I’ll be around if you have any other questions but Albert and Spot will get you sorted out.”
Snapping off her gloves she left the room with a grin and a pointed stare at Race, who sat in a chair in the corner. Watching Spot hook an IV up to him, Finch avoided looking at Albert who was gathering supplies for his stitches. “Do you need anything Finch? Some food, something to drink?”
“Can I get some water?” Finch asked, looking over at Spot.
“Sure I’ll get you some water and check in Radiology.” Spot nodded before looking at Albert. “You good for the stitches?”
Nodding, Albert walked back over to the bed, dropping several things onto it. Holding a basin and a syringe full of saline, Albert smiled at him. “I’m going to clean the wound a little before numbing it up. Can you tilt your head forward?”
Finch did as he requested, wincing at the coldness of the saline. “Sorry, I should've told you that it might be cold. I haven’t said it yet but I’m sorry about my friends.”
“You all seem pretty close.” Finch commented, feeling Albert’s hands poke around the back of his head.
Albert chuckled. “I went through high school and college with those idiots. Spot, Kat and I all had several classes together which made college easier. Race and Jack, Kat’s boyfriend, are teachers at the local high school so the five of us have always been really close.”
“That’s really cool that you’ve maintained your friendship for so many years.” Finch commented.
Dropping the syringe into the basin, he placed it on the bed. “They can be a pain in the butt at times but I wouldn’t trade them for the world. This may sting a bit but I’m going to numb you up now.”
Finch inhaled sharply at the needle pricking his skin but soon he didn’t feel anything on the back of his neck. “How many stitches?”
“Looks like maybe 7 but we’ll see when I tie it off.” Albert casually shrugged, thankful Finch couldn’t see the light blush on his face. “So what do you do with your life?”
Finch chuckled. “I work for a project management company in the city. I’m in charge of building the new hospital across town currently. And I promise I don’t trip and fall over skateboards all the time.”
Albert chuckled at his humor as Finch grinned at the sound of his laugh. “I’m sure that’s a lot of challenges but good rewards.”
“It’s fun to work on a project six months to a year before moving onto another.” Finch smiled. “There’s definitely never a dull moment.”
The door opened as Spot slipped in, handing Finch a cup of water with a straw in it. “Al, Radiology can take him in 15 minutes.”
“Thanks Spot.” Albert nodded as he started stitching Finch’s head up as Spot wandered out of the room. “So the hospital is your latest project. Would I recognize anything else you’ve worked on?”
Finch chuckled. “The coffee shop was one of my first projects after I graduated - they wanted something modern in the old building. To this day, that might be my favorite project.”
“That’s really cool. So is your background in architecture or something else?” Albert said, continuing with the sutures and keeping Finch’s mind off what was happening.
“It’s actually Architectural engineering. My entire family, outside of my mom, are engineers so it was just nature for me to go into engineering but architecture has always been fascinating to me.” Finch explained.
Albert nodded. “That’s really cool. Big family then?”
“Two brothers and a sister. Both brothers and my dad are mechanical engineers while my sister is a biomedical engineer.” Finch explained.
Albert whistled at his pedigree. “That’s quite impressive and really cool.”
Quietness fell on the room. “Hey Albert, I have a weird question for you.”
“Weird is in my daily dictionary.” Albert chuckled. “What’s up?”
“Can I have your number?” Finch asked as a blush flushed across his face. “You know, in case I have any questions about the stitches.”
If Finch didn’t sound so sincere, Albert would’ve laughed. “Yes, you can have my number - give me your phone and I’ll put it in in a minute. Alright, your stitches are done - only had to put in 5. Do you want me to put a bandage over them or will you remember that you have them and not touch the back of your head?”
“Better put a bandage over them.” Finch chuckled as Albert saluted him, walking over to the cabinet and grabbing gauze and some tape.
Carefully, Albert put a bandage on it before pulling out his phone and texting Spot. Grabbing the phone Finch offered, Albert quickly put his number in before texting himself.  “Specs will be here in a few minutes to take you to Radiology. I’ll be around and will check up on you before they discharge you. Do you need anything?”
“I think I’m good but thank you Albert.” Finch said, giving him a look, holding out his hand to shake.
Albert smiled. “You’re welcome but I think anyone would’ve done what I did. You just got lucky that I was in the right place at the right time.”
Quickly washing his hands, Albert glanced at Finch once more before leaving the room, collapsing in a chair at the nurse’s desk with a sigh. “Is he doing okay?”
“Yeah, stitches are in. Did you tell Specs he’s ready for Radiology?” Albert asked, hearing his phone ding as he looked at Spot.
Spot nodded. “Specs said he would take him up.”
Albert grabbed his phone, opening up it to a text from Finch. Grinning, he quickly replied as he heard a chair slid across the floor. “So did you get his number?”
Giving his best friend a look, Albert glanced between Spot and Race. “What are you talking about?”
“Spot said you couldn’t keep your eyes off of Finch so I’m asking if you got his number.” Race said, leaning over the chair with his chin in his hand, batting his eyelashes in curiosity.
Pushing Race’s head away from him, Albert rolled his eyes. “None of your business. Besides why are you still here? Thought Spottie would’ve kicked you to the curb by now.”
“That’s just plain mean, Albie.” Race’s face fell before a grin slid across his face. “I wanted to make sure Finchie was okay. Besides, Spottie grounded me from the skateboard so that means I would’ve had to walk home.”
“You’re still going to have to walk home due to neither of us having a car.” Alber gave Race a look. “Spot and Plums are working until midnight and I’m not planning on hanging around the emergency room longer than I need to. I have to be back here tomorrow at 7.”
Spot continued to chart as Race and Albert talked quietly, Spot interjecting every now and then. Plums threw a chart on the counter with a sigh. “Albie, I just saw Finch’s scans. It’s not broken; he’ll just need a brace on it for a couple of weeks. You can remove the IV and he’s good to go.”
“Can he drive?” Al looked at Plums, who bit her lip.
“No he shouldn’t be driving.” She said, reviewing his chart. “You okay to get him home?”
Nodding, Albert moved to slug Race, who had a shit eating grin on his face, as he stood from the chair, grabbing the discharge papers from the printer. “Just for that Racer, find your own damn way home.”
“Love you Albie.” Race called as Albert waved his hand in the air.
Making his way to Finch’s room, Albert slid open the door. “Hey, Finch. You’re free to go. You’ll need a brace for that arm but it’s not broken.”
“That’s some good news.” Finch chuckled. “Can I drive home?”
Albert grabbed a pair of gloves, grimacing before shaking his head. Due to the lidocaine, you can’t drive until it wears off which will be several hours.”
“Sorry if this is a bit forward, but can you drive me home?” Finch asked as Albert came over to the side of the bed.
Albert nodded. “I can if you want me to; don’t have anything else planned for the day. Sorry we didn’t ask earlier but are you squeamish with needles?”
“No, just pull it out.” Finch sighed. “The sooner I’m out of here the better.”
Albert nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly with the statement. “So I probably should’ve asked you before I gave you my number but is there a significant other?”
“Nah . . . I’ve been painfully single for the last year.” Finch chuckled. “Old boyfriend couldn’t handle my work schedule.”
Albert knew that frustration only too well. “I can see that.”
“You?” Finch asked, looking up at him as he pulled the IV out, grabbing a gauze pad to ward off any bleeding. Finch’s fingers brushed Albert’s as he held the gauze pad in place, allowing Albert to clean up the IV.
Albert scoffed. “It’s not easy dating a nurse who’s schedule at times can be unpredictable. I’ve dated here and there but it’s been two years since my last serious relationship. Part of the reason why my friends can be a pain in the asses at times.”
“We might have to change that.” Finch grinned, watching Albert throw the IV in the garbage before grabbing something from the cabinet, walking up to the side of the bed. He put a bandaid on the gauze pad before giving Finch a look.
Handing him a stack of papers, Albert smiled. “These are your discharge papers. There’s instructions on how to care for your stitches - you’ll have to go to your primary care doctor in a few weeks to get them taken out. Let me grab a wheelchair and your keys from Race and you’ll be all set to go. Any questions?”
“I don’t think so but thanks again Albert.” Finch grinned up at him as Albert nodded, leaving the room, hoping his heart would calm down. Finch’s smile was a dangerous thing and Albert didn’t know how he felt about that.
Grabbing a wheelchair, Albert stopped by the nurse’s desk, getting Race’s attention. “I need Finch’s keys. Where did you park it?”
“How about I get it and bring it to the bay doors so you don’t have to go wandering through the lot to find it?” Race asked, raising an eyebrow as Albert nodded. “But first did you get his number?”
Albert laughed. “How about you worry more about how the many ways Spot is going to kill you and worry less about my life?”
“I just want you to be happy Albie!” Race cried, giving his best friend a look while hugging him.
Giving Race a look, Albert shook his head. “No, you want to be the first with the gossip.”
“True but all I want is for you to be happy, Albie.” Race said, giving him a sincere look. “I’ll go grab the car and bring it around. Meet you at the doors?”
Nodding, Albert pushed the wheelchair to Finch’s room, helping him off the bed and into the chair before scanning the room to make sure they had everything. Albert ignored the cat calls that came from the nurse’s desk, opting to throw a one-finger salute behind him as he pushed Finch to the exit. As promised, Race was waiting for them with the car, helping Finch to get in as Albert took a deep breath, willing his heart to calm the hell down.
With a pat on the back, Race slammed the door before walking back into the emergency room. Getting into the driver’s side, Albert smiled at Finch as Finch handed him his phone, directions to his home already pulled up.
The drive was quiet and quick, which Albert was thankful for. Pulling into the driveway, Albert looked over at Finch with a smile. “I know this is crazy and preposterous of me, but do you want to come in for a bit? Just tell me if I’m reading this wrong.”
“I don’t think you’re reading this wrong and I’d love to come in for a bit.” Albert smiled, reaching over and squeezing his hand. “Let’s get you inside.”
They made quick work getting Finch inside and laid up on the couch, giving Albert the opportunity to look around the modest dual floor condo. “This is homey.”
“It’s nothing much but it’s home.” Finch groaned as the pillow hit his stitches. “Feel free to make yourself at home.”
And so the afternoon went, them both taking turns to ask questions to get to know one another. After Finch had fallen asleep, Albert called an Uber and left the condo without another word. Several hours later, he got a text message as he was preparing for bed.
Dinner and a movie tomorrow night? My treat?
Albert grinned, shaking his head at how sweet and simple the message was from Finch. He simply replied name the time and place.
So that’s how Albert met Finch! What did you think? Feedback would be wonderful!

Hey there! Could you do stargazing and proposal for sprace? If you would rather someone else that's great too! Have the best day! I might send in another prompt later. <3
I’ve been throwing around an idea of how Spot proposed to Race in my Life in the Emergency series. @deliciouspeachpirate gave me the perfect opportunity to write it. So buckle up kids, this is a doozy.
One point of noting, as I was writing this, I realized that Katherine would’ve had to be in school for 12 years, which would’ve made her at least 30 in this series. I’m envisioning the group to be mid-20s, 25/26 years old. However, she’s actually a PA, not an MD. I’ve made the updates in the other stories of the series.
I do not own One Tree Hill. Curse words and alcohol included.
July 18, 2019 7:30pm
There were perks to working nights while his boyfriend was puttering around the house, unaware of what was to come that night. But little did Race know that Spot was only working until 8pm, having switched with a fellow nurse for the night.
Tapping on the desk caught his attention as Spot looked over at Albert. “You nervous? Ready for this?”
“Why I told you in the first place, I’ll never know.” Spot shook his head, looking at his boyfriend’s best friend. “I’m a little nervous.”
Albert smiled, putting a hand on Spot’s shoulder. “Don’t be . . . my best friend may be a dumbass but he’s going to be surprised. He’ll love it.”
“You sure?” Spot bit his lip, his eyes flying up to see Kat throwing a chart on the desk.
She rolled her eyes, looking at her friend. “Spot we’ve been over this a thousand times. You could propose to him doing the hula and he would say yes. This is perfect for you two and he’s going to love it. Now don’t you have places to be, other than the Emergency Room?”
Spot rolled his eyes at Plums and Albert before quickly clocking out and pushing back the chair. “Wish me luck.”
“Good luck but you won’t need it.” Kat pulled him into a hug before lightly slugging his shoulder. “Text me later, might need some excitement to keep me awake.”
Nodding, he said goodbye to them both, stopping by his locker before he walked to his SUV, his baby outside of Race. Throwing his bag in the backseat, he quickly checked the trunk, making sure the cooler he packed earlier was still cold. He saw the blankets there as well before shutting the trunk lid.
Jumping into the SUV, he turned the radio on and let his thoughts drift over the last six years he and Race had been dating. They had been friends throughout high school but didn’t start dating until their sophomore year of college, when they were roommates. Spot grinned, remembering their wild times at 1456 Wakeman Ave. Jack and Crutchie had lived across the hall with Albert and Romeo just down the hall.
Pulling into the driveway, he quickly grabbed his bag before walking into the house. Dropping his bag on the bench in the mudroom, he smirked, hearing the bass pumping as there was noise coming from the kitchen. Peeking his head into the kitchen, Spot’s eyebrow raised. “Racer, what the hell are you doing?”
His head snapped up, hitting the underside of the cupboard, several curse words escaping his mouth. “Spottie? What the hell are you doing home? You scared the living shit outta me.”
“Sorry about that. But this is your first surprise of the night.” Spot leaned over, rubbing the back of Race’s head as he kissed him. “I’m sorry for scaring you.”
Race gave him a look. “Again, what the hell are you doing home? Thought you were working overnight.”
“That’s what I had you believe. I actually got off at 8 . . . now go get changed into comfy clothes and we’ll get going.”  Spot clapped his head, heading to their bedroom to change.
Spot quickly got changed into an old pair of basketball shorts and a t-shirt before grabbing something from the top drawer, heading out to the living room, where Racer still hadn’t moved. “Racer, let’s go.”
“Where are we going?” Race asked, tilting his head to look at Spot.
Shrugging, Spot smiled. “Figured since I don’t have to work tonight, we’d go for a drive. Go get changed.”
“That’s what you’re wearing?” Race asked as he headed for the bedroom.
Spot rolled his eyes. “Nah, I figured I’d change along the way.”
“Alright, smartass, you don’t have to break out the sarcasm.” Race called, as Spot went around the living room, turning off the many lights that were on. He yelled at Alexa to stop playing the music. Slipping his feet into a pair of Nike Flip Flops, he grabbed the keys as Race came out of the bedroom. “Alright I’m ready . . . do I need to bring anything?”
“Unless you want a hoodie or something specific to drink, everything is already in the car.” Spot said, twirling the keys in his hand.
Race gave him a curious look, heading back to the bedroom, grabbing a hoodie for them both before meeting Spot in the entryway, heading out to the car. Unlocking the navy blue 4Runner, he quickly got into the driver’s side as Race hopped in on the passenger’s side. “So do I get a hint or anything? Still can’t believe you tricked me on when you worked.”
“I haven’t surprised you in a while, figured it would be a good night to do it.” Spot grinned, leaning over stealing a kiss from him. “As for a hint, it’s something you’ve been wanting to do this summer but we haven’t been able to do it yet.”
Every summer they make a bucket list on their chalkboard wall in the kitchen. Everything from visiting the beach to a summer roadtrip to getting ice cream from their favorite local shop, there are 14 things up on their wall that they’ve been checking off since Race got out of school for the summer. “There’s so many things still up on the board that we haven’t accomplished yet.”
“Well we’ve got a bit of drive ahead of us so you can ponder the board for a while.” Spot smirked, pulling out of the driveway. “Do you want to pick a playlist?”
Race shrugged, hooking his phone up to the system before the Lumineers poured out of the system. “So were you working this morning?”
“Nah, I had some errands to run. I worked 2-8 but I have to pick up a shift in the next two weeks for Maria who is covering for me tonight.” Spot held his hand out for Race to lace his fingers through, giving them a squeeze. “All will be revealed soon but I just wanted to surprise you tonight. I put in a request to transfer to days.”
Race’s eyes went wide as a grin slid across his face. “You did? But you love nights.”
“But I hate not being able to spend much time with you.” Spot countered, taking his eyes off the road for a second. “Kat and Albert are also looking to transfer to days so the gang will all be together.”
Race nodded. “Jack told me that he and Kat are trying to get pregnant . . . that might be why.”
“That’d make sense.” Spot nodded, squeezing Race’s hand, sighing happily. “I love you, Racer.”
“Love you too Spot; even when you scare me shitless.” Race chuckled as Spot joined in.
Spot turned onto the interstate, accelerating the car as he merged on. “So we’re heading out of the city?”
“Yes, we are.” Spot agreed, giving him a look. “Any ideas?”
Race shook his head. “Nah but I can check a few off the list due to going out of the city.”
“Is this one of your random playlist?” Spot questioned, listening to the music fade from “This I Promise You” by NSYNC to “I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)” from Hercules.
Race picked up the phone and looked at it, shrugging. “I just picked one of the Spotify playlist. I can put something else on, if you want.”
“Nah this is good . . . just didn’t expect to go from NSYNC to Disney.” Spot chuckled, picking up their linked hands and pressing a kiss to the back of Race’s hand.  “How’s driver’s training going?”
Groaning, Race threw his head back. “Almost got into a wreck with two kids today. Luckily at the last minute they stopped but my heart was in my chest for the rest of the drive. Needless to say, they’re driving with another instructor for the rest of the week.”
“How close are we talking about? Darting out in front of another car or blowing a red light?” Spot asked, raising an eyebrow as he squeezed Race’s hand.
Race sighed. “Darting out in front of a car, one side was clear but failed to see a car coming until it was almost too late. All I kept thinking is thank goodness you’re working today.”
“I love you dearly but it’s never a good day when you end up in my Emergency Room.” Spot gave him a knowing look.
Race half smiled. “I know but you look so damn sexy in those scrubs.”
“I honestly have no words.” Spot said slowly as Race threw his head back and laughed loudly - one of Spot’s favorite sounds in the world.
Spot grinned pulling off the interstate, applying the brake as they came up to a stop sign. Turning left, Spot saw Race’s face break into a big grin as he slowly recognized where they were. “You’re taking me to the old farmhouse?”
“Maybe . . .” Spot shrugged as the playlist flipped over to “I Don’t Want To Be” by Gavin DeGraw. “Remember when you made me watch all 9 seasons of One Tree Hill over a two week period?”
Race chuckled. “I thought you were going to kill me but you ended up loving that show as much as I do. Besides, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone ship Naley as much as you do.”
“Leave my precious babies alone.” Spot took his hand off the steering wheel for a moment to point his index finger in Race’s direction. “They had their ups and downs but damn they were the couple that made that show!”
Race rolled his eyes as Spot turned into the long driveway of the farmhouse Medda had bought several years ago as a retreat outside of the city. “Momma here?”
“Nah, she’s in the city working on some new production.” Spot said, giving his boyfriend a grin. “She knows we’re out here though.”
“Just in case there’s a stray killer scarecrow hunting the grounds?” Race quipped, giving Spot a look.
Shrugging, he stopped the car, turning off the engine. “You never know what can happen in Timbuktu. Come on.”
Hopping out of the SUV, Spot made his way to the trunk to grab the blankets, handing them to Race before grabbing the cooler. Closing the hatch, he offered Race his hand before leading him out to the fields behind the house. “What are we doing? You didn’t bring me here to die, did you?”
Spot threw his head back laughing. “No one is going to die tonight . . . well that’s not in the plans.”
“That’s reassuring.” Race mumbled, lacing his fingers with Spot’s. “What’s in the cooler?”
Spot adjusted the cooler in his other hand as he tugged on the one laced with Race’s hand. “If you hurry up, I can show you. The more questions you ask, the longer until everything is revealed.”
“Okay, okay.” Race motioned Spot to start walking as he followed behind him. “You sure there’s no cow pies out here?”
Sighing loudly, Spot shook his head. “Momma doesn’t own any cows, for as long as I’ve known you. Do you think the cow pies would magically fall from the sky?”
“I mean, you never know. There are cows around here that could’ve gotten loose.” Race defended as Spot looked over his shoulder at him.
“In your dreams, Racetrack. Now pick up your pace. It’ll be midnight by the time we get everything set up at this pace.” Spot cracked a smile at him before looking up at the sky, knowing the night was perfect.
Soon they came to the field that they had often found themselves laying in when they were at the farmhouse. It was a little tradition of theirs. “Here.”
Dropping the blankets on the ground, Race sighed looking over at Spot. “Okay . . . now what?”
“Oh how I love you Race.” Spot leaned over, stealing a kiss from him. “Please never change.”
Race’s eyes went wide as he looked at Spot. “What does that mean?”
“You haven’t figured out what we’re doing yet?” Spot asked, putting the cooler on the ground before spreading out one of the blankets on the ground.
As if something had hit him, Race’s eyes brightened up. “We are going to stargaze?”
“Bingo, snookums.” Spot said, dropping to his knees on the blanket before rolling over onto his back, propping an arm behind his head. “It’s the perfect night for it. Look at how clear the sky is.”
Race soon joined him, laying his head on Spot’s chest as he gazed up at the stars, sighing in contentment.  “The big dipper is on bright display tonight.”
“Of course that’s the one that you always find first.” Spot grinned, running a hand through Race’s hair. “And there’s the little dipper and the North Star.”
Race hummed in agreement as he tilted his head back to look at the star filled sky. “It’s absolutely gorgeous out here. Why do we live in the city again?”
“Closer to jobs, family, everything really.” Spot replied. “Maybe in the next few years, we can move out here. It’s not that far of a drive when you really think about it.”
Race nodded against Spot’s chest. “Might be hell in the winter but we can always get a better car.”
“It’s good to dream with you.” Spot mused continuing to run his hand through Race’s hair. “I’ve been doing some thinking.”
Race sat up, giving Spot a look. “Is that good thinking or bad thinking?”
“Always good thinking.” Spot said, sitting up, lacing his fingers with Race’s, squeezing them gently.  “How long have we been together, Racer?”
A smile crossed Race’s face. “We’ve known each other since Freshman year in high school, god we were babies. But together officially since Sophomore year of college. I remember being so nervous to tell you that I liked you . . . it was a damn miracle that you hung out with me as a friend, let alone a boyfriend.”
Spot laugh, nodding his head. “The feeling was mutual snookums. I couldn’t get over how lucky I was to have you in my life as a friend, let alone a boyfriend. I remember pinching myself so many times during the first month because I thought this was going to crumble and fall. You’ve been there for every good day, through all the triumphs and downfalls. You’re the first person I want to call when I’ve got good news, the person I want to hug when the day is just awful, and the person I want to vent all my frustrations to. But we’ve been through so much together and our journey is just beginning. Since we’ve been together for six years, I kinda don’t want to spend the rest of my life with anyone else . . . so, Antonio James Higgins, will you do the honor and marry me? Be tied to me for ever and ever?”
Race’s jaw dropped, tears glistening in his eyes, as he started nodding his head before throwing his body weight at Spot, knocking him onto his back. He placed his hands on either side of Spot’s head before leaning down and kissing him. “Ja, Sí, Si, Oui, Yes, Sean Thomas Conlon . . . You're an idiot but I absolutely love you and yes, I will marry you.”
“I’m your idiot now.” Spot said, leaning up to capture his lips in another kiss. “And I love you too snookums.”
Race hummed into the kiss, pressing forward slightly to deepen it. Moaning slightly, Race pulled back with a smirk on his face. “Someone’s a little eager.”
“I’ve been carrying this around for a while now.” Spot sat up, pulling a velvet box out of his pocket, cracking it open. A black Tungsten ring with a row of black Sapphires sat inside the box. A gasp escaped Race’s mouth as he looked at the ring before looking up at Spot. “I-Is that for me?”
“Nope, it’s for the cow that’s in the next pasture.” Spot grinned, shaking his head as Race smacked his shoulder. “Of course it’s for you idiot. Now, can I put it on your hand without a comment from the peanut gallery?”
Holding out his left hand, Race grinned at Spot. Race’s hand shook slightly as Spot pushed the ring onto his ring finger. “I promise you that I will always be there on the tough days, the good days, and the bad days. You will never walk alone as I will always be by your side. And I love you immensely.”
Spot reached up and wiped away the stray tears from Race’s eyes before leaning up and pressing a kiss to his lips. “You’ve made me the happiest man alive, Tony.”
“Ditto, Sean, ditto.” Race half laughed, half laughed leaning forward so that his head was rested on Spot’s chest. “I love you, Spottie. How long have you been planning this?”
“Since a few days ago but I’ve had the ring since April.” Spot grinned.
Race’s head flew up from its place on Spot’s chest as his eyes went wide. “Since April? Where was it hidden in the house?”
“Who’s said it was in the house?” Spot countered, grinning at Race’s jaw drop. “I’m not telling you where it was hiddened.”
Pulling the cooler closer to his side, Spot opened the top, grabbing two red Solo Cups and the champagne bottle that was inside. He made quick work of popping the cork off the bottle of champagne, eliciting a whooo from Race before pouring some of the liquid into each cup.  Spot handed one to Race, clinking his cup with Race’s before taking a sip and making a face. Race busted up laughing, throwing his head back. “You should see your face right now.”
“Ugh . . . why is this stuff so awful?” Spot spat out the drink, not even taking another sip.
Shrugging, Race took his own sip, and not a second later, spit it out in the field beside him before dumping the cup. “Please tell me that you brought something else.”
Reaching back into the cooler, he grabbed two bottles of beer, pulling the tops off, offering one to Race before gently clinking the necks of the bottles together. “Much better, mi amor.”
Stretching his legs out in front of him, Spot felt Race slide as he sat beside him, mimicking Spot’s position, laying his head on Spot’s shoulder. “This was more than I could’ve ever dreamed of, Spot. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Spot whispered. “Can I confess something to you?”
Looking up at him, Race nodded. “I was nervous to ask you earlier but when I spoke from the heart, my nerves went away.”
“Were you nervous I'd say no?” Race whispered.
“Never. I was more nervous that you wouldn’t like what I was planning.” Spot explained.
Race laced his fingers with Spot’s. “Honestly, you could’ve been doing the Hula and I would’ve said yes.”
Spot threw his head back, laughing, while tears streamed down his face. “You and Kat need to stop hanging out with one another.”
“Kat knew?” Race asked, squeezing their conjoined hands.
Spot nodded. “She did as did Albert. I threatened them both of bodily harm if either of them squealed. Eventually we need to take a photo so I can send it to them. I’m surprised my phone isn’t blowing up.”
Just as he said that his phone dinged as a text came through. Spot groaned fishing his phone out of his back pocket and opened it, laughing at the photo that was texted to him. Race looked over at him, raising an eyebrow at his sudden laughter. “What?”
Tilting the phone, Race laughed seeing Kat and Albert with their chins in the palm of their hands staring into the camera of the phone. “All Kat texted with the photo was well.”
Race laughed. “So how do you want to play this?”
Holding their conjoined hands up, Spot quickly took a photo of it before sending it to Kat and Albert along with Jack, Medda, Crutchie, and Smalls. He locked his phone, throwing it on the blanket before sighing in contentment. “All of the important people just found out. My job is done.”
“Leaving the story part up to me?” Race asked as Spot’s hand found the top of his head and started massaging it.
Spot chuckled. “You’re going to love telling everyone that story. Might as well give you the floor.”
“Ugh you’re so right.” Race said as he sat up. “As much as I don’t want to, should we get going?”
Spot’s mouth slipped into a wide smile before shaking his head. “Nope, we’re staying out here tonight. Neither of us have to work tomorrow so no sense in driving back to the city when we’ll be out here over the weekend anyways.”
“You think of everything, pooks!” Race said, leaning over and kissing him. “Planner by nature.”
Spot snaked his arm behind Race’s head keeping him there, kissing him again. “Shall we move this party inside?”
“Please do not quit your day job, Spottie.” Race laughed, standing up, pulling Spot to his feet before gathering the blankets and putting the stuff back in the cooler. They made quick work of cleaning everything up before making their way to the farmhouse.
Walking inside, there was a light on in the kitchen. Dropping everything in the foyer, the two made their way to the kitchen and grinned seeing what Medda had left them. A cake along with two plates and two bottles of chilled beer were sitting in the middle of the counter. The cake read “Congratulations Spot and Race!” in swirly font. Next to the cake was a handwritten note, which Race picked up and read aloud.
Race and Spot,
Congratulations on your engagement. Spot, I’m so happy you’ll be officially joining the family. We will be back around 4pm tomorrow. Race, your bedroom upstairs has fresh sheets on the bed already. There’s stuff for you in the fridge for breakfast and lunch tomorrow.
Congratulations again and don’t make a mess!
Love,
Momma/Medda
Spot pointed to Race with a grin. “She knows you too well.  Shall we dig into this?”
“It’ll be a damn shame if we left the cake go to waste.” Race said grabbing two forks before just digging his fork into the cake and popping it into his mouth. “Damn, momma knows how to pick out a cake.”
Spot dug his fork into the cake popping it into his mouth with a groan. “Medda is amazing and so is this cake.”
Digging his fork in, Race looked over at Spot, offering him his fork as Spot leaned forward, eating the piece of cake. “Hey Spottie?”
“Yeah Race?” Spot asked, swallowing the cake.
Race set his fork down, leaning over and taking Spot’s hand in his, squeezing it. “You know how you said earlier that I made you the happiest man alive?”
“I did and you do.” Spot squeezed his hand in return. “Something on your mind, Racer?”
Race smiled. “You make me just as happy. Honestly, I was thinking of asking you to marry me, but as always you are three steps ahead of me. And I love you for it.”
Spot leaned forward, one hand still clasped in Race’s hand and the other moving to cup Race’s cheek before directing his lips to meet his. “I love you Racer; always, forever, and from here to the moon and back.”
“I love you too Spottie.” Race whispered, before leaning his forehead against Spot’s, pressing another kiss to his lips.
Thank you @deliciouspeachpirate for sending in the prompt. This was a lot of fun to write and feedback would be most appreciated!

“I think you might be pregnant.”
Minor cussing and some drinking in here along with hospital, IV, and blood. This is a continuation of this fic but you don’t have to read it to understand what’s going on in this.
January 21, 2020 8:00am
All was quiet in the ER that morning. Or as quiet as it could be with two gunshot victims and several heart attack patients. It had been crazy since he punched in at 5:00am for his 12 hour shift.
He threw himself into a chair and surveyed the waiting room. He was waiting for something to happen but for the moment it was temporarily calm.
He was lost in his thoughts, thinking of the dinner that Racer had promised him, when a chart was thrown on the desk with a bang. Looking up, he saw Plums standing there with an unsettling look on her face. “You alright, Plums?”
“Just felt off for a moment.” She pushed a smile to her face, sitting in a chair. “Hey, good job with that gunshot victim earlier. Not sure how but you got him calmed down.”
Spot grinned, thinking back to the first 30 minutes of his shift. “Got him talking about his daughter. Works like a charm.”
“Well I appreciate it.” Kat grinned, looking at the clock before turning to her chart.
Spot watched her. “Something’s off with you Plums. Are you doing alright?”
“I’m fine; don’t worry about me. Jack’s got all these ideas for projects this weekend and I’m a little nervous to be honest. But I’m fine.” She waved him off, as he raised an eyebrow.
“And is there a reason you’ve been in the bathroom like 6 times already this morning?” Spot picked up a pen and his own chart. “Is there something you wanna tell me?”
Her eyes went wide as her hands went to her ponytail to tighten it before giving him a look. “I didn’t know you’ve added stalker to your resume.”
“For being a doctor you’re kinda thick headed, Plums.” Spot smirked.
She turned, giving him a confused look. “Pray tell, head nurse Spottie, tell me what I’m missing.”
Leaning in close to her, he grinned before whispering. “I think you might be pregnant.”
She pushed back in her chair, eyes wide. “There’s no way.”
“Come on. There’s a way. You and Jack - trust me I know more than any brother-in-law ever wants to know.” Spot gave her a look. “You’ve got all the signs - frequent trips to the bathroom, sleepiness, fatigue, need I go on?”
Kat shook her head. “I’m not pregnant, Spot. Just drop it.”
“Just take a test. If I’m wrong, we drop it. If I’m right, we’ll celebrate.” Spot kissed her cheek. “Why are you so worked up denying this?”
She sighed, flipping the chart closed. “Just drop it. I’m off the clock. I’ll see you this weekend, love you.”
“Love you too Kat.” He gave her a look, watching her head to the locker rooms to grab her stuff. “I’ll see you this weekend.”
The day passed, with more runny noses and coughs that he wanted to see but it was quiet, thankfully. No major crises or issues walked through the doors. Looking at the clock he saw that it was just past noon. He was planning on escaping to the cafeteria to grab something to eat when the bay doors were thrown open and a gurney was wheeled in.
“What do we have boys?” He caught up with them, accepting the chart they had started before looking at the patient, eyes going wide. “Kat?”
“26 year old female; husband found her fainted and lethargic. Her husband called saying she had fainted several times, hitting her head the final time.” Spot looked at the gauze on her forehead before looking over at a worried Jack. He gave him a tight smile before looking at the paramedics.
“Let’s get her over to bed 2.” He said, pointing in the general direction.
Stopping at the desk, he gave Isabel, another nurse, a look. “Page Dr Rush and Albert. Plums is in bed 2.”
Walking over to the bed, he was met by a few nurses and an orderly. They transferred her to the bed, letting the paramedics leave. Spot looked at Jack. “Jack, talk to me. What happened?”
Jack kept an eye on the nurse as she started an IV, getting Kat hooked up to all of the monitors. Putting a hand on his brother-in-law’s shoulder, Spot looked at him. “She’s going to be okay. Now I need you to tell me what happened.”
“One minute she’s telling me what a pain in the ass you are at work today. And the next she’s falling to the ground. She was so still, Spot. She didn’t move for a minute or two while I called 9-1-1.” Jack cried as Dr Rush and Albert showed up.
Albert looked between Jack and Spot before nodding at them. Dr Peter Rush sighed. “Didn’t we just kick you to the curb, Plums?”
“Missed it too much. Had to come check up on all of you.” She grinned. “I’m fine you guys. It’s just a little head wound.”
Dr Rush stepped up to the bed and looked her over. “Albert, would you take Jack to the waiting room? We’re going to do some tests and you can come back in.”
Jack shook his head, giving Spot a pleading look. “I’ll come get you when we’re done, I promise.”
Letting Albert guide him, Jack sighed loudly. “Love you, Kat.”
“Love you too Jack. Go I’ll be fine. Call your brother.” She gave him a look, watching him walk away before looking at the two men in front of her. “Spot don’t start. Order a full blood work panel and see what’s up. Also, just stitch me up.”
Dr Rush chuckled. “She self diagnosed herself . . . why was I paged?”
“Possible concussion and because she’s a stubborn little thing and I needed someone to look at her.” Spot chuckled. “Anything else?”
Looking at Kat, Dr Rush gave her a look. “What year is it?”
“2020.” She grinned.
“And what day of the week is it?” He asked.
“Tuesday.”
“And what’s your puppy’s name?”
Kat grinned. “Basil.”
“I want a CT scan, I want to know why she’s fainting. I don’t think she has a concussion.” He handed her chart to Spot. “Let me know what you find out. Kat, take it easy; try to sleep some while you’re here. Let us run tests and we’ll see what’s going on.”
Waiting until he left, Spot gave her a look before drawing blood. “Did you take a test?”
Swatting him, she shook her head. “No but knowing you, you’re gonna run one. Put a rush on those, please?”
“Will do. You scared Jack.” He said, flicking the test tube a bit to ensure all the bubbles were out of it before putting a barcode on it. He would deliver the blood to the lab himself. “Do you need anything?”
She sighed, pushing herself up in the bed. “I know I scared Jack - one minute I’m complaining about you and the next I'm on the floor with his mug hovering over me. Can I have some water? Can you grab Jack?”
“I’ll have Al bring you some water. Anything to eat? And yes, I’ll grab Jack as I head to the lab.” He promised, patting her leg. “You’re going to be fine. We’ll figure this out.”
Kat smiled, biting her lip. “I had lunch. Thank you for everything, Spot.”
Spot patted her shoulder before giving her cheek a kiss. “Rest. I’ll send Jack and Al back here. Love you.”
“Love you to, Spot.” She smiled. “Thank you.”
He nodded, stepping out closing the curtain behind him before heading to the waiting room. Spot quickly found Jack sitting there with Racer beside him. They both stood as he approached. “How is she?”
“She’s good. She’s hooked up to an IV getting some fluids. We took blood work and I’ll bring it up to the lab. She’s going to be getting stitches and a CT scan and will know more in a bit.” Spot smiled at the two. “You guys can come back and sit with her if you want, until we take her up for the scan.”
They both nodded and followed him through the maze of the ER. He stopped at the desk and grinned at Al. “Hey can you come stitch up Plums? And grab her some water.”
“Sure. Thought you’d want to do that?” Al grinned, looking between Spot and the two behind him.
Fishing in his scrubs pocket, he pulled out the vial of blood. “Gotta take this to the labs. I’ll meet you guys by Kat in a bit.”
Tugging on Race’s hand, he pulled him closer. “Hi love. I’m sorry it’s so chaotic but I’m glad you’re here for Jack.”
“Hi yourself.” Race grinned, leaning over and kissing him. “Go be the hero and save the day. I’ll see you in a bit.”
With a pep in his step, Spot gave him a look before heading towards the elevator. Tapping his foot, he took a moment to inhale a deep breath before exhaling. He hoped the vial of blood would clue them in on what’s going on, though he had a pretty good feeling.
Walking into the lab, he grinned seeing Elmer standing there. “Hey man is there any way you can rush this and run this while I wait?”
Elmer gave Spot a look. “It’ll cost you.”
“Whatever it takes. I just need this done. Order should be in your inbox.” Spot handed over the vial, leaning against the wall, taking out his cell phone.
A quietness descended on the two. Spot took that time to flip through the texts he had received, most of them from Race trying to figure out what was going on with Kat. He sent Race a text to see how Kat was doing and glanced up at Elmer. “How’s your day been?”
“Busy. Y’all couldn’t have a quiet day in the ER could you?” Elmer gave him a look grinning.
Spot chuckled. “Never. But it’s been quieter than the last few days, knock on wood.”
Elmer laughed, shaking his head. “Glad you’re in the mayhem and I’m not. Alright, the tests will be in the patient's file by the time you get back downstairs.”
“Thank you! I owe you.” Spot clapped his hands, heading towards the elevator, pressing the down button.
Stepping off the elevator, he headed to the desk, pulling up Plums’ chart before reading the labs. His eyes widened at the one result, a grin pushing through his lips. Logging off the computer, he headed back to her bed. “Oh thank god you’re back.”
“What’s wrong?” He asked, looking between Jack and Race who both had grins, Albert who was frozen halfway between the bed and the curtain and Kat who just looked half asleep.
“These two are trying to convince Al to put purple or green stitches in. They think they’re funny but they’re not.” She rolled her eyes, hand flying to her head with a groan. “Can you stop them?”
Spot gave his husband and brother-in-law a look, pointing at them. “Al go check up on status for a CT, you two sit there and touch nothing.”
Walking to a drawer, he grabbed a few things, looking at Kat. “Did he numb you up yet?”
“No. He was too busy being egged on by these two.” Kat gave him a look. “Can you assign him flu cases for the next week?”
Spot grinned. “Shhh that’s our secret. How are you feeling?”
“Slight headache and just tired.” She gave him a faint smile as he prepped to stitch her up.
“Race, don't look at Kat. Keep your eyes away from her.” Spot said, glancing over his shoulder. “Just a few more Kat.”
Snipping the thread, he threw everything just as Al came back in. “They can take her now if you’re ready.”
“You two will have to wait in the waiting room.” Spot gave Jack and Race a look as Jack started to protest. “She’s going to be upstairs, running tests. You’ll be bored so we’ll come get you once she’s back.”
“Is she going to have to stay overnight?” Jack asked, standing.
Spot shrugged. “Probably not but we’ll know more after the CT scan. Don’t panic - this is routine and normal. She’s okay, Jack.”
Kat grinned at her husband and brother as they both gave her kisses. Al and Spot transferred her upstairs, Al leaving them at radiology. “So what did my labs say?”
“You owe me.” Spot looked at her. “You’re pregnant.”
Tears clouded her eyes, as she shook her head. “Really?”
“Yup.” Spot nodded. “We can do an ultrasound if you want when you go back down.”
She chuckled. “Not exactly how I wanted Jack to find out or you and Racer.”
“But it’s kinda perfect.” Spot grinned.
She nodded, folding her hands over her stomach. “Can we not tell Jack? I will, I just want him not to find out with the hubble babloo of the ER.”
“Let me talk to Rush and we’ll see what we can do.” Spot grinned. “Now let’s get this CT scan done and we can get you out of here.”
He sent a text to Rush with Kat’s request and waited in the hall until she was done. Blink quickly read the report and didn’t see anything abnormal which they expected. Pushing her back downstairs, Spot put her back in her bed before going to find Race and Jack. “She’s back in bed. I’ll have Dr Rush come in and she should be released soon.”
“Spot, give it to me straight. Is she okay?” Jack stopped him before he started to head to the back.
He bit his lip, looking between Race and Jack. “She’s going to be okay, Jack. Dr Rush wants to look at everything before coming to talk to you guys, okay?”
Jack nodded, following Spot to the back. Race followed them, but held back as Jack went to see Kat. “You’re lying.”
“Am not.” Spot gave his husband a look. “And since when do you know all medical things?”
Race grinned. “You biting your lip is a tell. You know something.”
“Even if I knew something, I couldn’t tell you because of confidentiality.” Spot gave him a look. “Besides if they want you to know, you’ll know.”
Race’s eyes lit up. “So you do know something. Spottie . . .”
“No, Racetrack. Go in and check on Kat.” Spot pushed him towards the curtain, giving him a pointed look. “I’ve got to get the doctor then I’ll be in. Don’t be a nuisance.”
Spot watched him disappear behind the curtain before heading to the nurse’s station. He saw Dr Rush standing there and slided up beside him. “Did you see Kat’s labs?”
“I was just looking at them. Now what does she want to do?” Rush looked at him, flipping through the labs.
Spot grinned. “She doesn’t want us to tell them about the lab results. So I was thinking we tell them she was dehydrated and she needs to push fluids for the next couple of hours.”
Dr Rush nodded, motioning him towards Kat’s curtain. Spot walked behind him, pulling the curtain closed behind him.
They stepped in and all eyes turned to them. “We have your results. Looks like you’re dehydrated but everything looks good. I would suggest taking it easy for the next couple of days and push fluids - water and juice. Skip the alcohol.”
Jack leaned over and kissed Kat’s forehead with a strangled chuckled. He closed his eyes, continuing to kiss her forehead. “Any questions?”
Kat laughed, shaking her head. “I think we’re all set. When can I leave?”
“As soon as Spot writes up the discharge papers.” Rush gave them all a look before stepping out of the curtain. Spot looked at the pure excitement in the room and the relief on Jack’s face. “Kat, do you need anything?”
She looked at Race and Jack who were both grinning brightly at her, a weight lifted from their shoulders at their wife and sister being alright. “Nah I think I’m alright. Just get the papers ready?”
“I’ll get them ready.” Spot chuckled. “How are you getting home?”
Race raised his hand. “I told them I would take them home since Jack rode in the ambulance with them.”
Nodding, Spot left the area, heading over to the nurse’s desk to start the paperwork. Spot logged into the computer, reviewing his notes before typing them up. Finishing them up, he quickly printed them off. Grabbing that and a prescription that printed off, he headed back to Kat’s area.
“Basically, keep hydrated, rest, don’t do anything dumb.” Spot gave Jack the paperwork, giving him a look. “Keep her calm, even though she doesn’t have a concussion, she might have a hell of a headache. Let me know if you have any questions.”
Jack nodded, giving him a look. “Thank you Spot. I’ll text you if I have any questions.”
“Sounds like a plan.” He gave Kat a look. “Let Jack wait on you hand and foot. No Dr Plums today . . . it’s just Katherine for the day. Go watch all those Hallmark movies you love and cuddle Basil.”
He started taking the wires and IV out before giving her a look.  “Do you need anything before you go?”
She shook her head as Albert came up with a wheelchair, before helping her into the wheelchair. Patting Jack’s back, Spot watched them walk out of the area with a smile on his face. He just hoped that Kat would tell him sooner rather than later.
Race caught him as he walked out of the area. “Hey, what time will you be home tonight?”
“Around 5. You still making dinner?” Spot asked, giving his hand a squeeze.
Race nodded. “Pasta, right or do you want something else?”
“Kind of craving homemade pizza.” Spot grinned. “I’ll see you at home, I love you.”
“Love you too. Have a good rest of your shift.” Race kissed him, waving goodbye before heading out of the emergency room.
Going back to the desk, he collapsed in the chair, rubbing his hand over his face with a loud sigh. Closing his eyes for a moment, he listened to the noises around him. He heard the chair next to him slide across the floor, as he peaked an eye open. “How are you holding up?”
“I’m doing as well as I can be right now.” Spot sighed. “Got another two hours before I’m done and all I want is a bed for a nap. How are you doing? Ready for all the incoming flu cases coming your way?”
Albert threw his head back, groaning. “Ha you’re funny. I’m fine. I wasn’t in the room all that much but it seems as if Kat’s alright - just dehydrated from what I saw.”
Spot nodded, grinning. “I’m sure Jack will be the perfect nurse for him.”
The next two hours passed by without an issue, a few simple cuts and bruises and an arm that needed to be set. He quickly grabbed his stuff before clocking out and heading home. He sighed, getting into the car, starting to head home.
He was looking forward to laying on the couch with Sassie, their dog, and looking forward to whatever kind of pizza Race was making that night. Pulling into their driveway, he quickly got out before slamming the car door behind him. Walking up the sidewalk, he pushed open the door, inhaling deeply, sighing in content at the spiciness in the house.
“Honey I’m home.” He tiredly called, dropping his bag and kicking off his shoes. “And it’s been a hell of a day.”
Race poked his head out of the kitchen while Sassie made her way over to him. He patted her a few times, before leaning over and kissing Race. “I love you. It was good to have you in the emergency room and not be the patient.”
“I love you too and you’re not funny.” Race rolled his eyes, walking into the kitchen. “I have a beer open and ready for you.”
Quickly changing into sweatpants and a hoodie, he sat at the kitchen table and watched Race finish up dinner. He relaxed in the chair and listened to Race prattle on about anything and everything. As they were finishing up dinner, both of their cell phones chirped with a text message. “OH HELL YES!”
Race did a weird jig in the middle of the kitchen, with the biggest grin on his face. Spot gave him a look. “What?”
“WE’RE GONNA BE UNCLES, SPOTTIE!!!!” Race yelled, continuing his jig. “Jack just texted the news.”
Spot grinned, shaking his head, standing up and joining him in his awkward jig. The secret would stay with him now. In this moment, he would jig with his husband and celebrate the happy news.
There’s almost 3500 words of another emergency room fic featuring doc Kat and nurse Spottie. Hope you all enjoyed it. Let me know what you think!

“Hold still.” for Sprace? ♡
I’m going back to my favorite headcanon for Spot . . hope that’s okay anonie! Without future ado, here’s an update on Nurse Spottie and Doc Plums.  This part of my Life in the ER Series - you can catch up here. Warnings, blood, stitches, hospital visit, cussing.
March 15, 2020 2:00pm
“You suck, Conlon!” A chart was dropped on the counter as Albert collapsed into a chair, giving the head nurse a look. “Why?”
Looking up from his own chart, Spot raised an eyebrow. “It’s actually Higgins-Conlon and has been for almost two months and what did I do now? If I remember, it’s been only a few days since I switched to days, instead of nights. I couldn’t have gotten into that much trouble since then.”
“You’re giving me all the shit cases today.” Albert shook his head, flipping open a chart. “What did I do to make you angry?”
Spot chuckled, shaking his head. “Fortunately, you haven’t done anything to piss me off . . . it’s just how the cards have fallen today.”
“Boys . . . do we have to argue?” Plums asked, collapsing into a chair with a sigh. She was five months pregnant and already complaining about the extra weight she was carrying. “I’m not in the mood to pull you two apart.”
Spot bit his lip, looking over at his longtime friend. “How you doin’ momma?”
“This child is already causing me fits and they’re not even born yet.” She sighed, rubbing her hand over her expanded belly. “Something else to hold over their head.”
Albert slammed that chart he was looking at closed before looking over at Plums. “You and Jack finding out what you’re having?”
“Jack doesn’t want to but I kinda do.” She shrugged. “It’s a daily conversation in the house . . . so when I know I’ll let you know. But we’re working on the nursery this weekend . . . Jack is going to be painting something-”
She was interrupted by the bay doors being thrown open and a stretcher was being pushed in. Grabbing his stethoscope, Spot hopped to his feet with Plums right behind him. Listening to the paramedics fill them in, they sprung into action, getting the patient to centerstage with several other nurses and physicians behind them.
2:45pm
“How about we go down to the café to get something to eat?” Plums asked, giving him a look, snapping her gloves off her hands, sighing loudly. “I know you haven’t eaten anything since you came on at 5.”
Avoiding her look, Spot shrugged, snapping his gloves off his hands. “I’m off at 5 . . . I’ll be alright.”
“Spot, come on.” She tugged on his arm, her eyes sympathetic. “Just grab a coffee . . . take a few minutes. That was a rough one; you need a break, even for a few minutes.”
Nodding, he allowed her to loop her arm through his arm as they made their way down to the café. The patient that the paramedics had brought in was pronounced dead soon after he arrived in the hospital. They tried resuscitation efforts but there simply wasn’t anything they could do.
Grabbing a coffee and a pastry, Spot quickly paid, going to find a table. Kat joined him shortly with a bowl of mac and cheese and a Coke. Spot raised an eye at the Coke as she grinned. “I have mostly given up coffee so this is my one for the day.”
“Your child is going to be wired with all of the caffeine you consume.” He cracked a grin as she laughed.
Kat’s eyes lit up at the thought. “Jack’s going to have his hands full.”
“Ha that’ll be a sight to see - you sleep deprived and your baby hyper.” Spot chuckled. “Luckily this job has prepared you for sleepless nights.”
She groaned. “Ugh . . . I’m just glad I got switched to days. Nights were killing me. Speaking of days, how’s Racer liking your new schedule?”
“He loves it . . . he’s actually happy that we see each other more now than we did before.” Spot smiled. “It’s an adjustment though; my body is still out of whack with sleeping.”
He watched her take a bit of her mac and cheese before sipping on his coffee. “Agreed . . . that’s the worst part. Luckily, I’m exhausted after my 12 hour shift.”
“Yeah but you have more days off than I do . . . I’m working four 12 hour days with three days off. You’re only working three 12s with four days off.” Spot gave her a look, sipping his coffee.
Shrugging, she took another bite. “Perks of being a PA, I guess.”
He couldn’t say anything because at that moment, Albert came running into the café, scanning the area frantically. “SPOT!”
Spot was already on his feet when Albert slid to a stop at their table. “What’s wrong?”
“Race and Jack just came in.” His eyes were wide as he looked between Spot and Plums.
Spot’s heart fell to his stomach as he glanced at Kat. She gave him a look as they ran out of the café heading towards the emergency room, Albert at their heels. “What happened?”
“Race cracked his chin open.” Albert said, glancing over his shoulder at Plums. “Jack’s fine . . . just brought the idiot in.”
Pushing open the doors to the emergency room, Spot gave Albert a look. “Where are they?”
“Bay 4.” Albert said, walking over to the curtain, before pulling it open revealing Jack in a chair and Race in the bed with a dish towel pressed up to his chin.
“Hi Snookums.” Race grinned, wincing as his lips pulled upward. “How are you?”
Snapping on a pair of gloves, Spot shook his head walking up to examine Race, pulling away the dish towel, whistling at how deep the cut was. “Hi yourself . . . What did you do?”
“He’s an idiot.” Jack sighed, as Plums made her way over to him. “We really should look into wrapping him a bubble wrap bubble anytime he goes out. Hi love.”
She sighed, her gaze landing on Race. “Hi babe. Now tell us, what happened?”
“You know I’ve been having that cold and I took some medicine that made me dizzy and I fell.” Race grimaced. “When I got up, I noticed blood on the floor and realized I had busted open my chin.”
Kat joined Spot next to the bed to look at the wound. “What medicine did you take?”
“Sudafed.” Race looked between the two.
“Tilt your head back a bit.” Kat said, pressing near the wound as Race pulled back and hissed at the pain. “How often are you taking them? What’s the dosage? Have you been staying hydrated?”
Race looked over at Spot with wide eyes at all the medical questions. “Spottie told me to take them. They’re the red ones and I take them every four hours. And I’ve been drinking . . . some.”
“You’re probably dehydrated which caused you to get dizzy and fall.” She gave her brother-in-law a look. “What have you been drinking? Water? Gatorade? Coffee?”
“Yes, yes, and yes.” Race replied, grinning cheekily at his sister-in-law.
Groaning, she shook her head, pulling her pen light out of her scrubs before flashing it in his eyes, watching his pupils dilate. “Quit being a smartass. Now, what’s the date?”
“March 15, Saturday.” Race grinned.
“When was your wedding?” Kat continued to flash the light in his eyes.
“January 17, 2020.” He moved his eyebrows up and down, looking over at Spot.
Spot snorted a laugh, shaking his head. “Behave and just answer her questions.”
“Who’s your favorite sister?” Kat asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
Race snorted, immediately after his hand flying to his chin as he whimpered. “You, you . . . can I get some pain meds and stitches?”
“Go ahead, Spot. Clean that out and stitch him up.” Looking at Race, she gave him a look. “You’re lucky . . . I don’t think you have a concussion but let Spot stitch you up.”
She turned and looked at Jack. “Where were you two when he fell?”
“I was at their house . . . we were working on something.” Spot’s head popped up from where he was getting the supplies when he heard Jack’s response.
“What were you two working on?” Spot asked, dropping the supplies on the bed beside Race as he gave his husband a look.
Race looked at him, as he lowered the bed so that Race was lying back. “It’s a surprise . . . don’t worry about it.”
“For me?” Spot asked, flushing out his wound with saline, watching the bloody water flow into the basin he held up to Race’s chin.
Race smirked. “Nope, for Sassie.”
Nodding his head, Spot continued cleaning out the wound. “Enough of your sassiness. Hey Race?”
“Yeah Spottie?”
Spot grinned. “I need you to look over at Kat . . . keep your eyes on her and don’t look at me, okay?”
“You’re going to shoot me up now aren’t you?” Race asked, giving his husband a wide eyed look.
“I’m going to be quick about it but hold Kat’s hand and keep your eyes on her.” Spot gave Kat a look as she grabbed Race’s hand.
As soon as their hands were laced together, Spot quickly numbed his chin, letting the wound become numb before he started the stitches. “Hold still, Racer. I’ll be as gentle as possible.”
Nodding his head, Race gave Spot a look. “Love you Spottie.”
“Love you too Racer. Now hold still.” Spot gave him a look as he started stitching him up.
Fifteen minutes later, he was tying off the last stitch before cutting the thread. Gathering up all of the supplies, he threw them away along with his bloodied gloves before grabbing a new pair. “How do you feel?”
“Super glad I have a nurse and a doctor in the family.” Race grinned, wincing at the pain in his chin. “How long is this going to hurt?”
Spot looked over at Kat who grinned. “You’ll be in pain for the next few days. It’ll be tender but Tylenol should help.  Stop taking the Sudafed and drink more than you normally do, avoiding coffee. Gatorade, juice, and water should be fine. Spot, you know what to look for.”
“When can the stitches come out?” Race asked, looking between his husband and sister-in-law.
Spot tilted Race’s head back gently, using gauze and some saline to clean up the excess blood from Race’s chin before dropping a kiss on his cheek. “You feelin’ okay?”
“Yea but I’m tired Spottie.” Race whined. “When are you off work?”
Looking at the clock, he saw that it was 3:45 and sighed. “I’ve got another hour before I’m done.”
Whining, Race groaned. “I want to cuddle.”
“We’re both off at 5 . . . how about you guys hang out here and we’ll take you home after we clock out?” Kat asked, looking between her husband and Race.
They nodded agreeing as Spot and Kat took off their gloves. “Also Race, Jack?”
Jack and Race looked up at her amused tone. She locked eyes with both of them, her pointer finger sticking out. “No more Emergency Room visits . . . this has happened too often now.”
Sighing, they both looked at one another before looking at their spouses. “We can’t promise but we’ll try.”
Spot chuckled at Jack’s response before shaking his head. “If you continue on this trend, I’m all for the suggestion of getting bubbles for you both when you go out of the house.”
They left, closing the curtain around the bay, heading for the desk. Collapsing into a chair, Spot started charting everything that had just happened in the room, sighing loudly. “They’re going to be the death of me.”
“You and me both.” Plums collapsed into a chair beside him, looking over her own chart. “I wish I could drink . . .”
Spot laughed. “I’m sorry. Mocktails not cutting it?”
“No but it’ll be worth it in the end.” She laughed, rubbing her stomach, suddenly grabbing his hand and putting it on the right side. “Your niece or nephew is saying hello.”
Spot grinned, feeling the baby kick just below his hand. “That’s absolutely amazing, Plums.”
“It really is.” She grinned, as he removed his hand, continuing to chart. “What are your plans for tonight?”
Spot looked up at the bay doors opening, but didn’t see anything but a few people walking in. “Well, I’ve got to figure out dinner now so we’ll probably order in and chill. Race is going to be a baby with those stitches the next few days so I’ll have to deal with that.”
“If he gets too bad, we’ll take him.” Kat said, smiling sympathetically. “When do you work next?”
Spot printed off Race’s discharge papers before giving her a look. “Uhhh . . . Monday and Tuesday. I have tomorrow off and Wednesday and Thursday off.”
“Bring him over Monday. I’m off but Jack is working. He can hang out with me and fold baby clothes.” She grinned, eyes dancing with excitement.
Spot laughed. “Will do. I work 7-7 on Monday so he’ll be with you most of the day.”
“That’s fine. By Monday night, he’ll be begging to stay at home or going back to work.” She laughed, being way too excited to hang out with his husband while he worked.
“Part of me is scared by your excitement but part of me is relieved that he’ll be with someone while I’m working.” Spot shrugged, pulling another chart over to review. “Thanks Kat, I appreciate it.”
She put a hand on his shoulder. “That’s what family does, Spot. I’m sure my husband is going to be a dumbass soon so he’ll need someone to watch him while I work.”
Spot hummed, grinning at her affection for his husband along with her own. They fell into their own charts for a bit before Spot looked over at her. “I’m going to do one more round before shift change. You coming?”
“Nah, pull Rush. He’s taking over for me when I leave.” Plums grinned. “Make sure you stop by Bay 7 and kick them to the curb.”
Spot laughed, saluting her before making his rounds. He quickly filled Rush in on the patients that were currently in the ER before making his way to Race’s bay, throwing open the curtain. “You’re sprung . . . get outta here.”
“I can leave?” Race asked, feet hanging off the side of the bed with a hopeful look on his face.
Spot nodded, holding up a few papers. “Discharge papers are printed and you’re free. I’ve got to clock out so you can head to the desk. Jack, Kat’s just getting her stuff from her locker so she’ll meet you guys up there.”
He walked over to Race, kissing him gently before offering his arm. “Come on hotshot, let’s get out of here.”
Spot walked him to the nurse’s desk where Kat was standing with her coat and bag. “Kat, can you stay here a few minutes while I get my stuff?”
She nodded, looking over at Race. “You’re looking better than you were a few hours ago. How do you feel?”
“Like I could go tap dancing right now.” Race spatted sarcastically, giving his sister-in-law a look. “Tired and sore.”
Nodding, she gave him a once over. “Take it easy these next few days. You’re hanging out with me on Monday and Spot knows what to look for. Love you Race.”
“Love you too Kat. Thank you.” He gave her a gentle hug as Spot returned with his bag and coat.
Hugs were given before the two left heading to their own cars. Helping Race into the SUV, Spot made sure he was okay before going over to the driver’s side, hopping in.
The drive home was silent, each lost in their own thoughts. Pulling into the driveway, Spot could hear Sassie barking, excited that her humans were home. Parking the SUV in the garage, Spot hopped out, helping Race down from the car. “You doing okay?”
Race nodded as they neared the door. Spot opened it, revealing a very excited puppy, barking loudly as Race groaned. Spot maneuvered Race into the house, down the hallway, before depositing him on the couch with a groan. Dropping a kiss on his head, Spot went into their bedroom, quickly changing out of his scrubs before donning a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, grabbing the same for Race. Walking out of the bedroom, his face softened seeing Race and Sassie cuddling together on the couch. “Do you want to get changed?”
Looking over at Spot’s comfiness, Race nodded, making an attempt to stand up from the couch. Spot quickly joined him, steadying him. “Careful Racer.”
Together they got Race changed before collapsing on the couch once more. Race cuddled into Spot’s arms, sighing in contentment. “Thank you Spottie.”
“You’re welcome. Just rest. What do you want for dinner tonight?” Spot asked, running his hand through Race’s hair.
Sighing, Race looked up at Spot. “Something that’s not going to jar my jaw every time I take a bite.”
“So pizza is out of the equation.” Spot said, looking at his husband. “How does noodles or Chinese sound?”
Yawning, Race shrugged. “Either sounds good. Soup might be good.”
Pressing a kiss to his forehead, Spot nodded. “You rest, I’ll figure something out. Racer?”
Peaking open an eye, Race looked at Spot. “What?”
“What’s hanging above the other couch?” Spot said, noticing the canvas hanging up for the first time.
Race smiled, lacing his fingers with Spot’s. “That’s the surprise Jack was helping me with. I took him one of our wedding photos and he painted it for us - it’s a belated wedding present from me to you.”
“Racer . . .” Spot wasn’t one to have nothing to say, but he was truly speechless at the sweetness of his husband. “It’s perfect.”
“We have photos up all over the house but you have been talking about wanting to get some paintings to switch things up.” Race shrugged. “Figured that would be a great place to start.”
Squeezing Race’s hand, Spot dropped another kiss on his forehead. “Thank you Racer. It’s perfect.”
“You’re welcome, Spottie.” He yawned again, closing his eyes, sighing as he laid against Spot’s chest. “You’ve taken care of me more times than I can count so I just wanted to say thank you and that I’m really happy you’re my husband.”
“Love you Racer.” Spot murmured, sinking deeper into the couch, enjoying the warmth of Race on his chest.
“Love you too Spottie.” Race murmured sleepily, falling deeper into a sleepy state.
With his puppy on one side of him and his husband on the other, Spot sighed, happily. No other place he’d rather be . . . though if his husband wasn’t injured, it would be the perfect end to a perfect day.
Thanks Anonie for sending that in. This was fun to write! Feedback would be wonderful!

I wrote 1400 words of the next part of “Life in the ER” today. It’s a tough one I’m writing and I’m putting Spot, Katherine and Albert in a very difficult situation. To be honest, this will be the most difficult story I’ve written to date.

Life in the ER Newsies Series
So I'm determined to finish the next installation of my "Life In The ER" series tonight. So if you want, there's a sneak peak below the "read more" if you're interested.
If you'd like to get caught up on the series, you can do so here.
