Lightning Bug - Chapter 31

Masterlist
Warning: angst with a happy ending, lying, protective parents Wanda and Natasha, Yelena is a simp for Kate.
Word count: 3.3k
Relationship: Wandanat x reader (platonic)
“And break,” you collapsed to the ground once Yelena gave the order. Your forearm covered your eyes as you tried to get your breathing under control.
“I lied,” you said. “You are trying to kill me. Melina was just the warm-up,” you heard the Black Widow laugh and walk over to you.
“Mama made me promise that I would keep up with your training,” she grabbed your ankles, forced your legs straight, and made you sit up. “Remember-”
“Expand my lungs. I know, I know,” you smiled as Yelena handed you a water bottle. You sipped on the water slowly so Yelena wouldn’t yell at you for that, and then hurried footsteps ran over to you. It was Kate, who had been working out longer than you and Yelena.
“What was my time?” She asked her girlfriend. The blonde looked at her watch.
“6 minutes and 15 seconds,” Yelena answered. The archer was not happy with the time. Her hands went to her hips, and she began to pace.
“Still not fast enough,” she mumbled. I am going to go rerun it.” Kate began to walk back to the track, but Yelena’s stern voice stopped her.
“Kate,” the blonde stood up and approached her girlfriend. “Take a break. Go get some water, stretch, then rerun it.” Kate opened her mouth to argue, but Yelena shook her head. She gave Kate a look that would not lead to any discussion.
“Fine,” Kate gave in with a sigh. “Thank you,” the archer kissed Yelena’s forehead. The blonde watched Kate walk to the gym, where her water bottle was. You raised your eyebrow in question when Yelena turned around back to you. Kate was always a hard worker, the first in the gym and the last out. That was nothing new. But something was different. The blonde sighed and sat next to you.
“Rogers pulled her to the side last night and told her they want her to lead this new group,” she explained. Your eyes widened at the news. Honestly, it made sense. She was experienced and a hard worker; everyone looked up to her and liked her.
“That’s great!” You saw the concerned look on Yelena’s face. “Oh, I take it back. It’s not great?” You questioned with a tilt of your head. The blonde chuckled.
“It is. Kate is a capable leader and one the best fighters out of all of us,” you sensed a but. You nudged her shoulder with yours to get her to continue. “I worry. She’s a perfectionist, and I-” Yelena shook her head. You understood. Yelena was scared Kate was going to get hurt. Unfortunately, it was part of the job. It never made it easier. Yelena tapped your shoulder and pointed toward Maria, Natasha, and Steve. They were walking towards you.
“Why am I about to be sent to the principal office?” You questioned as they got closer. Natasha rolled her eyes.
“She got your dry humor,” Maria poked the redhead, which caused the Black Widow to let out a very undignified squeak. You covered your mouth to cover your laughter. Natasha sent daggers to Maria.
“I am so close to punching you,” Steve stepped between the two.
“Children, go fight somewhere else,” he teased and looked at you. He gave you a friendly smile, but your stomach sank. “As you know, we are putting on a week-long get-together for the Young Avengers,” you nodded. “This is a formal invitation for you to join them if you would like.” He added on quickly. You were surprised, to say the least. You planned to hang out during the training and meetings. You never expected them to allow you to join. Looking between Yelena and Natasha, you waited for them to decide on your behalf. They stayed quiet.
“Does this mean I am going to be an Avenger?” You asked.
“No!” Natasha and Yelena said at the same time. Your eyebrows shot up to your hairline in question. Natasha sighed and pinched the bridge of your nose.
“Okay, you can join the team if you want,” she said. “This means nothing, only to give you a chance to train against other people. We would never force you to join the team.” Her green eyes locked onto your blue ones. You believed her. They would never force you to join them.
Your mind began to wander back to what Melina asked you. What was your future? Was it not to waste your gift and join the Avengers? But fighting and being a hero wasn’t who you thought you were. You liked to imagine yourself as a librarian or a teacher. “Besides,” Maria broke you out of your daydream. “I think you can kick everyone’s ass.” The agent winked at you.
“Yeah,” you laughed. “I’ll tag alone.” Besides, all your friends would be in training or meetings; what were you supposed to do? Suddenly, the sound of glass shattering sent you flying to your feet. Yelena pulled you over to her and put an arm over your head as the glass rained down. When the dust settled, you saw a figure touch down on the floor in what looked like one of Tony’s suits. The only difference was the iron heart on the front. The face mask pulled back.
“Shit,” Riri said, looking at the mess she made. “I think my coordinates on this were off.” She had the guts to smile at the three older Avengers.
“You fucking think,” Yelena mumbled.
“Williams!” Tony’s voice yelled through FRIDAY’S system. “You are paying for that.” Riri cringed slightly.
“I mean fair, but I’m a broke college student, and you well aren’t.” Oh, this week was going to be so much fun.
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
“I don’t like keeping secrets,” Carol whispered as if the person they were meeting about was in this room. She wasn’t. “It makes me feel all weird in my stomach.” Monica rolled her eyes.
“You are such a child,” Monica mumbled.
“We aren’t keeping secrets,” Natasha said. “We are just withholding information until we get all the facts.”
“Besides, it’s not a secret that no one knows,” Wanda added. Natasha wasn’t happy about this ‘secret meeting.’ Still, it needed to happen, and the Young Avengers Initiative provided a great opportunity. The Black Widow was even more surprised that Steve and Maria took her concerns seriously. It helped that Vision vouched for her. She sat in a meeting room with Vision, Tony, Strange, Carol, Monica, and Yelena. The Guardians were on a video call because the group wasn’t 100% sure they could attend.
Carol sighed. “There has been no unusual activity.”
“The jump points have been stable,” Monica added.
“We’ve run into a few smugglers,” Natasha drew her attention to Gamora.
“But to be blunt,” Rocket said. “I don’t think they are after your kid.” Although that improved Natasha, it still left her with more questions than answers.
“America and I monitor the multiverse daily,” Strange folded his hands across his chest. “It’s stable. That last hiccup was Agatha, and that will never happen again.” Wanda placed her hand on Natasha’s thigh. The Black Widow could feel Wanda’s nails digging into the fabric, even through her pant leg. Natasha placed her hand on top of hers. The mention of the other witch was always a sore spot.
It was unintentional for Natasha’s eyes to look at the time zone locked away on Strange’s neck. “No.” He said.
“I didn’t say anything,” Natasha defended. Strange glared at her.
“Not verbally, at least,” he deadpanned. “You know I can’t use the time stone like that.” Natasha huffed and leaned back in her chair. What was the point of having the stupid rock in the first place? This time, Wanda squeezed her hand to help calm her down.
“Are we sure Vision’s feeling is a dark prophecy?” Tony asked. “Maybe he just had a headache.” Yelena snorted as she threw a tennis ball into the air.
“I assure you the threat is real,” Vision calmly said. His posture was relaxed, as if he were having a simple conversation with friends, not the world’s fate. Whatever it is, it is either from Earth or already on Earth.” That was a long list with no leads.
“So we are back to square one,” Yelena threw the ball up again and caught it. “No leads. No information and a fucking stone to go off of.” Natasha understood her sister’s frustration if she had not seen the stone’s power firsthand.
“The stone is very important,” Thor intervened. “These stones are tied to different aspects of the universe.” The blonde huffed and rolled her eyes. Natasha knew her sister was not interested in history. The redhead shot her a look to behave.
“But Yelena was right in the beginning,” Monica said. “If the stone senses danger, the best way to keep her safe is to keep her in the tower.” Of course, it was a good idea, but Natasha hated limiting her freedom. That sounded awful. Y/n’s freedom was finally given back to her. Natasha was not going to take it away.
“Why are we having secret meetings?” The sudden appearance of the very girl they were talking about scared everyone. The Guardians quickly turned off the video feed. Natasha jumped, and Yelena fell out of her chair.
“No more training for you,” Tony said dramatically, clutching his heart. We have too many ninjas in the tower.” The statement made the young girl giggle, but the sound only lasted a moment.
“Is everything okay?” Natasha asked. The question from the Black Widow drew her attention away from the billionaire.
“Yeah,” she started. “Pepper told us that food was here along with Shuri, and I didn’t know where you guys went. So I asked FRIDAY where you were, and she told me,” If Natasha remembered correctly, Tony told the AI not to tell anyone where they were. From the look on Tony’s face, he remembered the same thing. It appeared the girl had all walks of life wrapped around her finger. Her blue eyes narrowed at everyone in the room. “So, again, why the secret meeting?”
Vision was faster than all of them. “We are discussing the plans for the upcoming week. There will be surprises.”
“And,” Natasha continued. “Surprises can’t happen if they are talked about before you.” Still, the girl in front of her wasn’t convinced.
“So why is Yelena here?” she asked, pointing to the blonde. Isn’t she part of this initiative?”
“For some fucking reason,” the blonde mumbled. Natasha flicked her on the ear. “You are so annoying.”
“Since,” Wanda diverted the conversation again. Yelena is the most experienced of the group; she is helping us with the plan.” Natasha watched her sister’s ego grow three sizes in a matter of minutes.
“As Maximoff said, Yelena stood up and pushed the tennis ball into Vision’s chest. “Since I am the best,” Wanda groaned. I am done with this meeting,” she walked over to Y/n and threw her arm over her shoulder. I do believe Stark ordered Mac and Cheese.” Yelena gave Natasha a quick wink and led the younger girl out the door.
But Natasha wasn’t blind to the look of utter disappointment on her face - that destroyed her heart more. “Well,” Thor said. “I do not think Miss. Romanoff believed us.”
“Yeah, no kidding,” Natasha mumbled. Great, she fucked up.
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
You hated this sinking feeling in your stomach. You’ve never felt like this since moving to the tower. You felt gross. Your stomach was in knots, and not even America could pull you out of this sinking feeling.
You hated liars. Your biological parents lied about your existence. You lied to yourself about how you saw yourself as dangerous. Now Natasha and Wanda were lying to you. Two people you thought would never lie to you.
Still, you smiled when you met Cassie and Shang Chi—forced down food when dinner was served to avoid people worrying about you, and even raised your glass to Steve’s speech about hope, the future, and togetherness. Now it was time to mingle before training began tomorrow, but you stayed on the outside and ignored the looks Natasha sent your way. You even saw her try to walk over to you, but Wanda stopped her. You were too far away to hear what she said, but you closed your mind off to the witch.
So you sat at the bar, sipping on a mocktail that Maria made you. Everyone seemed to stay clear of you and your lousy mood until Vision wandered over to you. “You seem upset,” he said. “Can I offer you any assistance?” You wanted to stay quiet and give him the silent treatment because he was part of the group that was lying. But Vision always seemed to be able to crack down on your rough exterior. You sighed.
“Natasha and Wanda are lying, so by extension, all of you are,” you said, taking a sip of your drink. “So no, you can’t do anything unless you tell me the truth,” you watched Vision think it over out of the corner of your eye, but the man sighed.
“Can I tell you that they care about you? That is the truth.” You rolled your eyes.
“That doesn’t count as the truth because I knew that,” you placed your glass on the counter and turned to face him. “Why are you hiding something from me when it clearly has something to do with me? I think I’m old enough to care for myself.”
“You are a child.” “I’m 13,” you cut him off before he could continue.
“That is not helping your case,” Vision deadpanned. Unfortunately, he made you giggle. “Legally, you are not an adult until you are 18. However,” he said slowly. “You could argue that you are more mature than most your age because of your experience,” you tried to interrupt him again, but he held up his hand to stop you. “But you are still a child, and now you have parents that worry for your well-being. I understand that is something you aren’t used to, but it is your new reality,” your tough exterior cracked, and you glanced at Wanda and Natasha. They were talking with Scott and Cassie. Concentrating hard enough, you would pick up on Natasha’s heartbeat. It was elevated more than usual. You noticed the conversation she was in wasn’t quite reaching her. It was as if she was a million miles away.
“Yes, we are withholding information,” Vision continued, and you turned your attention back to him. “Can you trust us to tell you when the time is right?”
“And I’m guessing the time isn’t right.” He nodded. “Being a kid sucks.” This time, it was Vision’s turn to laugh. A feeling of eeriness washed over you. It had to be dangerous if they kept something from you and had secret meetings. It wasn’t like you had a second birthday to celebrate. “Vis, am I in danger?” The longer the android stayed quiet, the more anxiety filled your stomach.
“I don’t know,” he said. “And that is the truth.”
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
“My love,” Wanda called from the bathroom. When Wanda received no answer from the Black Widow, she returned to the bedroom. The redhead was sitting at the edge of the bed. Feet firmly planted on the ground, she seemed lost in her thoughts. Sighing, she walked over to her and sat on her girlfriend’s lap. It pulled Natasha out of her thoughts slightly. Natasha moved her hands on Wanda’s hips to steady her. It was a cute gesture; even when her mind was her worst enemy, Natasha still cared about her safety.
Wanda placed her head on Natasha’s shoulder and held her tightly. Occasionally, Wanda would kiss the skin she could reach. Finally, the tension left Natasha’s body and sagged against her. “Hi baby,” Wanda whispered and pulled back slightly. But Natasha whined and chased after her. The Russian placed her face in the crock of Wanda’s neck. Wanda smiled and ran her fingers through the red locks; her hair was still damp from the shower.
The deep breath Natasha took in gave her skin goosebumps. “So sensitive,” Wanda could hear the smirk in Natasha’s voice. The witch rolled her eyes and pinched Natasha’s side.
“What’s going on?” Wanda asked. Natasha sighed and pulled back to look at her girlfriend fully.
“I’m just worried we are pushing her away by not telling her the truth,” Wanda knew this was about Y/n. “Should we tell her the truth?” The truth? Wanda wasn’t sure what the truth was. They had no leads on what was coming. Everything seemed quiet, which was a worry in itself.
“What do you want to do?” Natasha groaned and pouted. Wanda always forgot that her girlfriend was a trained killer, so she acted like a grumpy child in those moments.
“I don’t want to worry her. We don’t even know what is happening,” that was true. It was a double-edged sword. In Sokovia, Wanda knew there was a war (that was harder to hide). However, her parents kept it hidden how badly they were off. It wasn’t until she was older and thought back on her childhood that she realized how much she missed. Her parents held a lot on their shoulders. At first, Wanda was angry that they kept the truth from her. Now, she was inspired by their strength.
A knock on their door interpreted Wanda before she could respond. “It’s probably Yelena,” Wanda slid off her girlfriend’s lap. “She knew I was upset.” Wanda smiled, kissed Natasha, and walked over to the door.
She was grateful that Yelena and Natasha’s relationship improved. It was rocky when Natasha first introduced the blonde to the team. Wanda knew better than anyone how important it was to have a sibling.
Expecting the blonde to be on the other side of the door, she was startled when it was Y/n. “Y/n,” Wanda smiled. “Hi.”
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
You stood awkwardly before the witch and played with the necklace around your neck. “Hi,” you whispered. Is Natasha in there? Can I talk to you both?” Wanda nodded and stepped to the side, allowing you to enter their room. You saw Natasha sitting on the edge of their bed, and her face lit up when she saw you.
“Hi, kid,” Natasha said. “Are you okay?” It seemed impossible to stay upset with the couple when they cared about you so much.
“Can I talk to you both?” You asked again. Natasha nodded and moved higher up on the bed to give you a spot to sit. You sat down, and Wanda found her place on the bed. “I’m sorry I gave you the cold shoulder all evening. That wasn’t fair to you. I just,” you sighed. You hated how hard it was to find the right words. “I’m still learning to let someone else care about me and my well-being. It’s hard.”
“We are learning too,” Natasha said. “This is our first time being parents, and we just want what’s best for you. We don’t know what is going on. Vision has a knack for sensing trouble,” you frowned. Was this about the infinity stone? You remembered him asking if you saw something when you touched it. Even Wanda questioned you about it. “But can you trust us enough that we will keep you safe, and we will tell you if we know more?”
“Yes,” you said and took both of their hands. “I trust you both with my life.” And you meant it, too.
“We are sorry we kept this from you,” Wanda said, pushing some hair behind your ear. “No more secrets.”
“No more secrets.” you smiled and tried to cover up your yawn.
“Come on, bug,” Natasha lightly tapped your leg. “It’s an earlier wake-up call for all of us.” You groaned, a pout on your face as you remembered Steve’s early morning woke out training. The Black Widow pulled back the covers, and you climbed underneath them. Their bed was much more comfortable than yours. It could be that you were safe between the couple. Whatever was out to get you, it couldn’t touch you here.

Bug of the Day
We are in peak bug-finding season - I have taken over 800 photos so far this month! At least this horrible hot and humid weather is good for something...
(From top to bottom: Say's mantidfly (Dicromantispa sayi), marsh fly (Tetanocera sp.), and firefly (Photuris sp.)

Uh, I saw your post and you mentioned that you teach the kids... how do I put it... that are given to you at social functions due your park ranger aura for safekeeping how to tell the difference between predatory lightning bugs and normal lightning bugs.
And then you didn't tell us that secret! May I ask you to share the difference between predatory lightning bugs and normal ones?
Thank you very much :)
By popular demand and because this was the most polite ask: how to tell the predatory lightning bugs from the non-predatory lightning bugs.
First, there are over 2000 species in Lampyridea. I am not qualified to distinguish between all that. I grew up in Northern Ohio (71 species) and every year summer wasn’t official until the lightning bugs came out in the evenings (usually the first or second week of June).
This is our first clue. The first lightning bugs out each evening are a species of non-predatory chaps. Their glow goes in a special pattern. Flash, pause, “J” shaped flight about 2 -3’ off the ground. Repeat. Their glow is more yellow and lingers. These are the males of Photinus pyralis or the common eastern firefly. They look like this:

(Photo from iNaturalist: a lightning bug beetle, mostly black with gold lines around the wing casing. Head shield is yellow with a red “eye” with black iris in the center. Rounded front and back, long down the center.)
Their females hide in tall grasses waiting for the right suitor. If you’re lucky and clever you can see her dimmer flash in the grass beaconing the males closer.
As the dark of night progresses you’ll start to see a quicker, brighter, greener flash. Blip, blip, blip, blip, long pause. They are FAST! They’ll also mimic the flashes of Photinus females. These are usually higher up off the ground. Even in the trees! These lightning bugs aren’t looking for love.
Photuris (not gonna get to specific epitaph on this one without a sample and a key) are looking for dinner!

(Photo from blog.greatparks.org another lightning bug beetle. This one is slightly larger than the non-predatory bug. It has “shoulders” and extra gold lines running through the back. Its legs are longer and its shield is more “sharp”. The shield marking is less like an eye and more like a yellow D where the inside is a red triangle with a black line running through.)
Another way to tell is to go out at night and catch a bunch of lightning bugs (if you can; I hear they’re getting scarce). Offer them a slice of apple. If you wake up in the morning to only a few and the rest are dead, good chance you found some predators. (This is how I found out about them! Wooops!!)
Lightning bugs are freaking magical. I’m so sad to hear that they are yet another wonder that we are losing at an alarming rate. If this bugs you as much as it bugs me there are a few things you can do to help them:
1) do not spray for mosquitoes! That spray is not-species specific. It’s bad for lightning bugs. It’s bad for monarch butterflies. It’s bad for birds. It’s bad for bats. It’s bad.
2) kill your lawn. But Misha! You said they breed in the grasses! True! However native plants are going to provide so much more habitat for these guys than a gross monoculture of Kentucky bluegrass ever will. The Midwest has some of the best native plant nurseries in the country! Use that resource!
3) Advocate for them and donate to conservation if you’re able. Bugs don’t have voices and they fight an uphill battle just for being a bug.
Thanks for joining my ranger talk! Support your parks.

Endangered Fireflies & Conservation
Fireflies are at risk of extinction due to habitat destruction, light pollution, and pesticide use. Recovery efforts started in 2023 for the 18 endangered species in North America. Almost 1 in 3 firefly species in the US and Canada are threatened with extinction.
Scientists have yet to prove the effectiveness of these steps due to limited research on firefly populations. However, there is evidence suggesting that human activities may contribute to the decline of fireflies. So, here's what you can do:
Turn off outside lights during nighttime hours
Allow logs and leaves to naturally decompose in your yard
Incorporate areas of water into your landscaping
Refrain from using pesticides in your yard
Avoid excessive mowing of your lawn
Plant native tree species in your yard.
Please take a moment to explore resources related to firefly conservation:
Discover articles from the Xerces Society on firefly conservation: https://www.xerces.org/endangered-species/fireflies
Watch a video from the Canadian Permaculture Legacy on saving fireflies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McjHyQMf5eQ
