The bell rang, signaling the end of class. The guys and I were quick to pack up our belongings before making a beeline for Mr. Clarke's desk, eager to see if the Heathkit came. All the while Mr. Clarke was reminding the already fleeting class of our homework assignment.
"Remember, finish chapter 12 and answer 12.3 on the difference between an experiment and other forms of science investigation. This will be on the test, which will cover chapters 10 through 12. It will be multiple choice with an essay section." His voice faltered towards the end of his sentence as he realized no one had been paying attention.
His head turned to us and he didn't seem too surprised to see us so eager. Mike couldn't take the wait any longer and spoke up on the behalf of all of us.
"So, did it come?"
Mr. Clarke looked solemn. "Sorry, guys," Our heads began to hang in disappointment at his words. "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but... It came!"
My face lit up with relief. We followed Mr. Clarke down the halls in anticipation. Mike got to the door first and eagerly threw it open, the rest of us close on his tail.
"Yes!"
Since Mike was the first through the door, naturally he dove for the desk chair as the rest of us scuttled over each other, each of trying to get a close look at it. Lucas and I seemed to have the same idea as we fiddled with the knobs on the Heathkit as Mr. Clarke addressed the new device we were all so eager to see.
"The Heathkit ham shack," The boys and I were in awe.
"Ain't she a beaut?" Mr. Clarke sighed. Dustin then spoke up. "I bet you could talk to New York on this thing."
"Think bigger." Said Mr. Clarke. I rose my eyebrow and looked to my teacher as I questioned, "California?"
"Bigger." 'No way.'
"Australia?" Mike pressed. We all turned out heads hopefully to Mr. Clarke as he responded with a smile and the shake of his head. We all exclaimed.
"Oh man," Lucas chuckled in excitement. "When Will sees this, he's totally gonna blow his shit." My smile faltered at the mention of Will, as Mr. Clarke scolds Lucas for his foul language. Lucas apologized turning back to the Heathkit, and I shake my head slightly trying to get my mind off of Will.
Lucas seems to have found the right settings on the dials based on the high pitch frequencies coming out of the Heathkit. Mike has the headphones on and begins to speak into the mic in an Australian accent.
"'Ello, this is Mike Wheela', president of Hawkins Middle AV Club."
Dustin then practically ripped the headphones off of Mike's head, a big goofy grin on his face as he placed them on his head. Mike was in a fit of giggles as he spoke. "What are you doing?" Dustin proceeded to do the exact same thing as Mike just moments ago.
"'Ello, this is Dustin, and this is the secretary and treasurer of Hawkins Middle AV Club. Do you eat kangaroos for breakfast?" I giggle, shaking my head thinking about the poor confused soul who is stuck listening to the boys ramble on. As Lucas grabs for the headphones, I turn around so I'm facing Mr. Clarke, and I give a polite, yet warm smile. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome Mr. Henderson," He returned the smile, seeming appreciative of the fact that at least one of us said 'Thank you'. He has always been a great teacher, and I don't think anybody ever really appreciates or even thanks him very much. I can't imagine how frustrating it can be as a teacher. I laugh to myself at the sight of my friends playfully fighting over who gets to use it next, when our fun gets cut short at the sound of a knock on the door. We all turn our heads to see the Principle walk in, a couple of men behind him.
"Sorry to interrupt, but, uh, may I borrow Y/N, Michael, Lucas, and Dustin?" To say my stomach dropped would be an understatement as I got a better look at the men out in the hallway and realized it was the Chief and one of his officers.
My mouth ran dry.
'Will.'
The four of were seated on the couch in the Principal's office, Chief Hopper, and officer Callahan - I believe his name was - seated in chairs opposite us. I was seated between Mike and Dustin, I kept my mouth shut unless told otherwise, and my hands have woven together in my lap, much too afraid to do otherwise. The boys, on the other hand, were freaking out and all trying to speak at once. I tried nudging them warningly with my elbows but they just ignored me. It seemed I had made the right choice in being quiet, as Hopper seemed to have gotten impatient almost immediately.
"Okay, okay, okay. One at a time all right? You." He points Mike. Mike shakes his head. "You said he takes what?"
"Mirkwood."
"Mirkwood." His face scrunched up in confusion.
"Yes," I croaked involuntarily, wanting to explain to him that it is just our name for road.
"Have you ever heard of Mirkwood?" He turned to the officer.
"I have not. That sounds made up to me." The officer replied. This timid, awkward man gave me the impression he was more of a 'Yes-man' and knew nothing about what he was doing.
"No, it's from Lord of the Rings."
'Oh, here we go.' I think to myself, sighing.
"Well, The Hobbit."
Mike and I look at each other, knowing what's happening.
"It doesn't matter." Lucas retorted.
"Knock it off!" I warn, trying my best to throw my whisper across the couch without drawing attention to myself.
"He asked!" Dustin nearly shouted.
"Guys!" I hissed.
"'He asked'" Lucas mimicking Dustin, not even listening to me.
I looked over at Mike for help but he is already checked out.
They continue talking over each other in a childish manner and the chief leans forward trying to silence them.
"Hey, hey, hey!" They quieted down finally. "What'd I just say? One at a damn time. You." He nodded to me. He seemed to tolerate just Mike and me.
"Mirkwood, as Mike was saying. It is a real road. It's just the name that's made up, it's what we call it. It's where Cornwallis and Kerley meet." I finish.
He seems satisfied, finally having a straightforward answer. He leans back in his chair, talking now to Callahan.
"Yeah, all right, I think I know that—"
"We can show you, if you want." Mike offered hopefully, cutting the chief off mid-sentence.
"I said that I know it!"
"We can help look."
"Yeah" Dustin added hopefully.
"No."
And just like that, the boys begin to talk over each other once again. Knowing better than to waste my breath trying to shut them up, I sit back once again, hands in my lap waiting for the Chief to continue.
"No," He says loud enough to quiet the boys. "After school, you are to all go home. Immediately. That means no biking around looking for your friend, no investigating, no nonsense. This isn't some Lord of the Rings book."
"The Hobbit."
"Shut up!" Lucas gave Dustin a swat on the arm.
Dustin reached over and hit Lucas back, knocking me and Mike back in the process. I roll my eyes in annoyance, and fight every urge I have not to shout at them.
"Hey!"
Mike finally snaps. "Stop it!"
They continue hitting each other and Hopper finally leans over and says quietly, in an irritated tone. "Do I make myself clear?"
I was the only one paying attention so based on his tired, lowered voice and his eyes on me, I could tell he was just talking to me at this point.
I shook my head. "Yes," I mutter.
He nodded his head at me in thanks. All the while, the boys were still bickering. Hopper's gaze landed on the boys, and he stood up and walked forward towards us. The way his tall frame towered over us was overwhelming, and enough to shut the boys up. In a deep, intimidating voice, he repeated his words, slowly.
"Do I make myself... clear?" The boys nod their heads in fear, their necks craning up to meet his eyes.
"Yes, sir."
"Yeah."
"Yes."
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
I've been laying in my bed, staring at the ceiling for about thirty minutes, give or take a few. I had managed to do all of my school work, including my project that wasn't due for another week and a half, read three books — granted, they were fairly short — and I was still left with nothing to do but worry about Will. The fact that I'm not allowed to help is driving me crazy, even though I keep trying to tell myself the adults are better equipped to deal with this stuff. My thoughts are interrupted by the crackling of the walkie-talkie that was sitting on my dresser. Since our mom couldn't afford two walkie-talkies, Dustin and I share one. I usually have it though so I can talk to Will.
The voice coming through sounded like Mike. Rather than getting my hopes up I just decided to stay put, staring at my ceiling, listening in.
"Lucas, do you copy? It's Mike. Lucas? Over."
"Hey, it's Lucas."
"I know it's you. And say 'over' when you're done talking so I know when you're done. Over." I roll my eyes and smile.
"I'm done. Over." I chuckle at this.
"I'm worried about Will. Over." My smile quickly falls.
I can hear Lucas sigh. "Yeah. This is crazy. Over."
"I was thinking..." Now I was really paying attention. "Will could've cast Protection last night, but he didn't. He cast fireball. Over." I sat up slowly, my eyebrows furrowed at the walkie.
"What's your point? Over."
"My point is... he could've played it safe, but he didn't. He put himself in danger to help the party. Over." A bittersweet smile flutters across my face briefly at this.
"Meet me in ten. Over and out."
'To hell with adults.' I tell myself. I leap off my bed and grab the walkie, knowing they'll still be able to hear me.
"Forgetting someone? Over."
"Y/n? Over." It was Mike.
"Don't worry, I'll let Dustin know. Over and out."
I retract the walkie before shoving it into my bag and heading for Dustin's room.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
Once I had caught Dustin up on everything, the four of us had met up and we are now currently riding down Mirkwood. The thought of my best friend disappearing right here, exactly 24 hours ago was enough to give me chills.
"Ah, man. This is it." Lucas broke the silence as we approached the barrier closing off the path where his bike was supposedly found. We all came to a stop.
For a brief moment, the woods were lit up by lighting in the distance as thunder bellowed across the sky. Dustin looked up at the blanket of clouds above the trees, his voice shaking.
"Hey, guys. You feel that?" He was obviously referring to the rain that fell on his face. I roll my eyes. "I think maybe we should go back."
"No!" Mike and I said simultaneously.
"We're not going back. Just stay close." Mike and Lucas continued on into woods. I was eager to follow them but not without trying to reassure my brother.
"Dustin, he's right. Look, I know you're scared right now, okay? I'm scared too, but can you even imagine how scared Will must be? We have to do this. For Will." I didn't wait for a reply and ran to catch up with Mike and Lucas.
Knowing my brother, he would rather stay in a group than split up. Sure enough, he gave in.
"Hey, guys, wait up!" He said, dropping his bike. "Wait up!"
We started walking again, and as we did it I could feel the rain start to soak my neck and shoulders. I pulled my hood up over my head, turning on my flashlight and set off into the night, eager to find my friend.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
The thunder rumbled, and as we ventured deeper into the forest I could feel the light drizzle of rain evolving into a steady downpour.
"WILL!"
"WILL!" I cried.
"Byers!" Lucas yelled.
Dustin tried a different approach. "I've got your X-Men 134!"
Our flashlights were hardly making a difference at this point. Dustin spoke up again. "Guys, I really think we should turn back."
"Seriously, Dustin?" Lucas exclaimed. "You wanna be a baby, then go home already!"
"I'm just being realistic Lucas!"
"No, you're just being a big sissy."
"Did you ever think Will went missing because he ran into something bad? And we're going to the exact same spot where he was last seen? And we have no weapons or anything?"
I start to slow down once I heard something in the bushes.
"Dustin, shut up." Mike spoke up.
'Okay, thankfully, Mike must have heard it too.'
"I'm just saying, does that seem smart to you?"
"Dustin!" I snap. "Zip it!"
Now the rustling was loud and clear.
"Did you guys hear that?" Mike asks.
I just shake my head, looking around for the source of the noise. The rustling is louder than ever and we all turn in the direction it came from. All our flashlights pointed in that direction. Then we heard it again. It was right behind us. We whipped around to find a girl, with a buzz cut, wearing nothing but 'Benny's Burgers' tee t-shirt. We all stood there, mouths agape at this girl, shivering and cowering in fear.

Hey, i really love your writing :) hope you are doing good. I'm not sure if i can make a request, if not then i'm sorry:) but could you write something about Oberyn and ellaria ( or Just Oberyn is fine to) with the reader being pretty shy and not very talkative, but they have to go to a feast and get uncomfortable. I hope this is alright :)
Tumblr media
Thank you so much, kind friend! I went ahead and just used Oberyn for this, but in our hearts Ellaria will always be there! Enjoy 💕💕
So, this turned into something entirely of its own, and is pretty self indulgent, I will not lie. But it’s soft, and I am craving some soft hours 🥺
»»————- ♡ ————-««
You played with a loose thread on the edge of your gown, twisting to and fro, eventually creating a bigger and bigger strand until the hem was frayed. A nervous habit, you realized, a bad one, but you couldn’t help it right now. In the midst of this grand feast, you wished you were anywhere but here. You weren’t even sure why your mother and father had made you attend; you literally had just stayed tucked in the back avoiding any and all people as best as you could. There was only one person you desired to see but they were not in attendance.
Your presence really wasn’t needed; as the youngest daughter that seemed to never gain a betrothal or make much of an impact or impression on anyone, you really weren’t there for any reason. But your parents had refused to allow you to remain behind, dragging you along with all your siblings and their spouses. You loathed large, grand events such as this, preferring the quiet comfort of your chambers at home. You could have been reading, knitting, cooking, out exploring the evening wilderness, literally anything rather than this. This was the absolute worst, and you really didn’t even want to speak to anyone.
“Stop fidgeting,” your mother came over and gave your arm a light slap as she looked around to make sure no one was paying attention. Pulling out of her touch, you did your best not to roll your eyes at her, “go out and talk to people. Pretend to be enjoying yourself at least.”
“But I’m not,” you sighed at her, “I told you I wanted to stay at home. I hate parties, all these people I don’t care about that also don’t care about me. Why should I pretend to like them and have fun when it’s so far from the truth?”
“Because you are a member of this family,” she hissed at you, “and you will act accordingly. If you ever have any hopes of getting married, you’d best starting acting at least somewhat pleasant.”
“But what if I don’t want that-”
“It’s not an option,” she insisted, grabbing your arm and forcing you to stand up. You really didn’t want to do that...not with anyone of her choosing anyway, “now get out there, put on a smile, and mingle.”
Before you could argue and say anything in response, she raised a stern eyebrow at you and pushed you towards a large crowd that was standing around and talking. They were loud, boisterous, and clearly had a few too many drinks in them. Knowing that your mother’s eyes were still firmly planted on you, you walked over to them and grabbed a nearby goblet of wine, throwing it down quickly, before attempting to make your way into their conversation. You laughed at a joke that was funny in the slightest, throwing in a few comments here and there.
But as soon as you were sure the coast was clear and you’d given your mother enough of a performance, you chucked the goblet down and parted from the crowd. It wasn’t hard to slip through the large crowds unnoticed and you kept walking until you made your way out of the warm great hall and into the cool evening of the air. The gardens here were beautiful and you eagerly strolled into them, already feeling much better in the company of the flowers and plants versus people.
Spotting a nearby bench, you almost ran over to it before sitting and relaxing, a long sigh escaping your lips. You sat there in silence for a while, listening to the now distant rumble of people and music, intertwined with the sounds of insects and chirping of birds that were still. So much better, you thought to yourself, this is better than people any day.
You were so lost in your own thoughts that you didn’t notice the sudden appearance of the person next to you. Almost jumping out of your skin at the feel of the hand on your thigh, a small bit of giggles met your ears as you turned to find Oberyn Martell grinning at you.
“Oberyn,” you relaxed once you realized it was him, turning your body and practically crawling into his lap. He practically beamed at you as you grabbed his face, giving him a few soft kisses before resting your forehead against his, “my love. I thought you weren’t going to be coming tonight?”
“Let’s just say I can be very persuasive and that sometimes being a prince has its perks. I was able to clear up my schedule and come. Besides,” his large hands were gentle, so tender, as his traced his fingers over the contours of your face, “I couldn’t stay away knowing you would be here. You look beautiful, sweet girl.”
“I’m so glad you came,” you sighed contently, “this night as been awful, but it’s already much, much better. I’ve missed you so much. It’s been nearly a month, and I fear I cannot bear to be apart for so long again.”
“Then we can make it so we are never apart again,” he insisted as you stared at him with wide doe eyes. You’d been...seeing, for lack of a better word, Oberyn for some time, shrouded in secrecy as you tried to figure out how to make this work. He was your love, you knew that much, you’d known that for some time; it had come to you as a revelation shortly after meeting him. And he loved you too, fully completely. But you were from different worlds: you were of one of the great Northern Houses, young, beautiful, and a catch for any man that offered enough of dowry for you. Oberyn was older, already had children by multiple women, was considered wild and untamed, a prince of Dorne (an area that many people, including your family had a disdain for) and yet he was utterly devoted to you.
You’d met by chance almost two years ago, after you’d caught the prince’s eye and he managed to woo you. But it would never work, that was a conclusion you had reached early on, making sure your trysts would be keep a secret. It was since then that you’d made it a point to make yourself undesirable to any man that attempted to court you. It had worked up until this point, but you were sure that your mother and father were starting to catch on, and they’d figure your little plan. Your worst fear was that they would force you into a marriage, and that you’d end up miserable and unhappy for the rest of your life.
For some reason, smart as they were, they never seemed to catch onto the fact that a certain prince was coming up north more and more often, and you spent more and more time away from home at those corresponding times. It was risky, you both knew that from the start, but worth it; it was worth getting to be with the love of your life at any cost.
“Oberyn...” you asked softly, biting your lip as you looked at your lap, starting to fidget with your hands. He quickly grabbed your hands, holding them in his for a moment, before bringing them to his lips and pressing soft kisses to your knuckles, “w-what do you mean?”
“I mean we tell them,” he stated boldly, and you swear you stopped breathing for a moment, “we tell them that we are in love and that we want...we will be married.”
Immediately feeling tears pricking at the back of your eyes, you looked in those dark, honeyed eyes to find that he was speaking truthfully. You wanted nothing more in the world than to marry him and be swept off to Dorne, but still you worried. You shook your head lightly, a few tears cascading down your cheeks, “we can’t...they will be angry, everyone will-”
“It doesn’t matter,” he insisted, reaching up and wiping your tears away, “let them talk and be angry. They cannot stop us, sweet girl. I want nothing more than for you to be my wife, to share my name, my home, my family - everything. I’m tired of hiding, and pretending you do not exist. I am a man grown and you are a woman grown, we are free to make our own choices...”
“There will be consequences...” you trailed off, holding onto his hand for dear life. This was what you had wanted, what you had wanted from the beginning, but you were still worried about what could possibly happen, to him more than yourself. You would never forgive yourself if something happened to him.
“I do care about the consequences,” he promised, “if they want to start a war, let them. I will fight every last war and take down every man in my path if it meant I would be able to spend my life with you.”
“Oberyn,” you looked back at him, his face so unsure of your reaction, and that’s when your mind was made up. If you could not spend your life with him, then you did not want to spend it with anyone. It was him, it was always him. Nodding slowly, you grabbed his face again and kissed him with a searing intensity that was so strong, you’d never quite felt anything like it before. He held you tightly, hugging to his body, afraid that if he ever let go, you would disappear, “let us tell them. A life without you is a life I do not want. I want you and nothing else.”
“Then let us spend eternity together,” he grinned against your lips, feeling a lightness in his heart that he had never experienced before, “I want nothing if it is not with you.”
“I love you,” you whispered softly, nuzzling your nose against, “you and only you.”
“I love you, sweet girl,” he promised, “no matter what may come, I am with you, always.”

The Monster Within

Plot: After the last fight against Thanos, the task of the remaining Avengers was done. And a new team of Avengers must now protect the Earth from a new unknown force. Together with SWORD, Wanda, Vision, Doctor Strange, Carol, Bucky, Sam and Loki, who must first prove himself on Midgard as a team and face unknown enemies.
Will Loki finally be able to be who he is?
Prologue
Thanos' army is summoned to him, including Thanos' children, Chitauri, Sakaarans, Outriders and the Chitauri Gorillas. When Steve sees the army descend to earth, he slowly gets up. With fierce determination, he pulls his broken shield to his arm and stands alone against Thanos' vast army. Suddenly, a crackle comes through his radio.
"Hey, Cap, can you hear me?", Steve stops in his tracks and looks around.
"Cap, it's Sam. Can you hear me?", Sam asked. A yellow and gold portal begins to form behind Steve.
"To your left.", Steve looks back and sees the portal by his left. Three figures step through the portal: Okoye, Shuri, and Black Panther, fully revived and ready to fight. Steve and the revived Wakandans look at each other as Sam, in his Falcon armor, flies out from above. As he does, dozens more portals open around the battlefield. Through one, Doctor Strange steps outw. He is joined by Drax, Mantis, Star Lord and Spider-Man. Everyone watches in bewilderment and awe as more and more heroes arrive from all corners of the universe, all supported by their own armies, including Black Panther and his Wakandan army, Valkyrie and the Asgardians, Wong and the Masters of Mystic Powers, and several Ravager ships. Among the heroes are Bucky, Groot, Scarlet Witch, the Wasp and Pepper Potts as Rescue arrive.
"Is that all of them?" asks Doctor Strange Wong.
"What, you wanted more?" asks Wong, a portal opening behind them.
"Yes, I wanted more.", Strange explains with a sly grin on his face and raises his finger, "One more to be exact."
Wong is confused and turns around, the inside of the portal was dark and little could be seen. First, two black leather boots were seen stepping out of the portal. Finally, the person had stepped out of the portal.
"Loki?"
"Did you miss me?" he said, smiling unusually friendly and many of the Avengers were confused. But there was no time for questions now Giant-Man emerges from the rubble of the Avengers facility with Professor Hulk, War Machine and Rocket. The Avengers, Guardians, Wakandans, Asgardians and Ravagers take up battle positions. All the heroes face Thanos forces united.
"AVENGERS!" shouts Steve, calling Mjolnir over, "Assemble."
Thor makes a battle cry, as does Black Panther and the heroes as they attack. Thanos raises his sword and points at the Avengers, ordering his army to attack as well. Then the two sides collide. Steve takes Stormbreaker, but Thor flies to him.
"No, no, give it to me. You get the little one.", Thor says and the two exchange the weapons.
"You haven't changed, brother.", Loki says laughing behind him, "But you've gotten fatter.", Thor turns to him stunned.
"L-Loki?", Thor asks in disbelief. He walked a little towards him. Thor kept his distance though, too afraid that Loki would just disappear like that, "Is it really you?"
"Yes brother. It is me.", Loki confirmed. Thor pulled him tightly into his arms.
"How can that be? You were dead, Thanos killed you?", Thor asks, more to himself than to Loki.
"Brother, I don't think it's the right place or time right now.", Loki says and pulled back from Thor's embrace, "Now is the time to make Thanos pay for all he has done to me and all the others.", Loki smiled at Thor before the two brothers launched themselves into battle against Thanos.
When the Gauntlet got past Thanos, he attacked T'Challa, but was stopped by Wanda, who was filled with rage at the loss of Vision.
"You took everything from me," Wanda says in anger.
"I don't even know who you are.", Thanos declares disinterestedly.
"You will.", using her powers Wanda levitates some of the debris up from the ground and tries to defeat Thanos with it. Thanos tries to kill Wanda with his double bladed sword, but Wanda pushes it aside. She then uses her powers to crush Thanos in his armor.
"Fire rain!" yelled Thanos.
"But sir, our troops!" appeals Corvus Glaive.
"Just do it!"
The spaceship cannons start firing at the Avengers and fling Wanda away. As two arms closed around her in flight. Wanda opened her eyes and saw Vision. He lands on the ground and gently places Wanda on the ground. Carefully she touches his cheek.
"Vis?" she asks incredulously, looking at the place before previously was the mind stone, was now only the metal plate, no stone anymore. The rain of fire had stopped unnoticed.
"Wanda."
"I don't want to interrupt your reunion, but the battle isn't over yet," Pepper explained from behind the two and flew away. Vision nods understandingly to Wanda. She presses a quick kiss on his lips and flew after Rescue.
Wanda arrives at next to Peter. Valkyrie flies in on her Pegasus.
"Don't worry about her“, Wanda explains.
"She has help", Okoye says.
Pepper lands next to Okoye, followed by Mantis, Shuri, the Wasp, Gamora and Nebula. Thanos' army attacks while the women help Carol Danvers get through the Outriders, Sakaarans and Chitauri. Carol Danvers then flies glove towards the van, flying past enemies and enemy blockades, which she clears with ease. When Thanos sees this, he runs to Carol, but is stopped by Pepper, Shuri and the Wasp. After Thanos sees Carol fly past him, he throws his double sword at the van, destroying it and the quantum tunnel, throwing Danvers backwards and losing his grip around the glove, which falls to the ground. In the final moments around the Iron Gauntlet, Stark defeats one of Thanos' army and sees the Gauntlet. He runs to get it, but sees Thanos when he suddenly attacks him. Thanos knocks Stark away and knocks him down. Then Thor arrives with Stormbreaker and Mjolnir, assisted by Captain America and Loki, to hold Thanos arm down. However, Thanos overpowers them and knocks them Thor and Steve unconscious and hurls Loki across the battlefield. Carol punches him, but Thanos grabs her arm and flings her away. Thanos puts on the glove, gamma radiation from the stones burning him. Thanos tries to snap his fingers, but Carol Danvers gets back up and stops his fingers from snapping. Thanos pokes her in the head, but it does nothing. Just as Carol Danvers gets the upper hand by flying up and bringing Thanos to his knees, Thanos pulls the power stone out of his glove and uses it in his free hand to knock Carol Danvers away. Stark looks questioningly at Strange, who simply raises a finger and reminds him that the one victory over Thanos he foresaw is now in jeopardy. Stark nods. Thanos puts the power stone back in the glove and screams from the gamma rays coursing through it until Stark makes one last attack on Thanos, pulling on the gauntlet before Thanos swats it away.
"I am inevitable." says Thanos, confident of victory as he snaps his fingers. But when nothing happens except a metallic "clang". He turns his Hamd and realized that the Infinity Stones are missing. Tony raised his hand and the stones inserted themselves on his own glove. Gamma rays streamed through him, to Thanos' shock.
"And I am Iron Man.", Tony snaps his fingers with a loud "CLANG" and a blinding white flash. Rocket shoots a Leviathan and before she devours it, it disintegrates into ash. The Black Order begins to crumble into ash. T'Challa and Quill look around in surprise. Steve looks on, exhausted, knowing they have won. Thanos looks around in horror and sees his entire army crumble into dust. He looks at Loki, who just stares at him. Thanos sits down and mourns before slowly crumbling to dust himself.
The force of all the energy from the gauntlet has mortally wounded Tony's entire right side. He stumbles a bit before his body collapses next to a pile of rubble. Rhodey lands near him and goes to see Tony, his longtime colleague and friend. Peter arrives and sees Tony collapsed on the ground.
"Mister Stark?" he runs to his fallen mentor. Tears form in his eyes, "Hey... Mr. Stark? Can you hear me? It's Peter. Hey. We won, Mr. Stark...We won, Mr. Stark. We won. You did it sir, you did it," Peter kneels down.  Tony doesn't respond. Peter breaks down and hugs him.
"I'm sorry...Tony...", Peter says. Peter is gently led aside to mourn. Pepper sits in front of the fading Iron Man.
"Hey.", Pepper says. Tony can barely move his head, but manages to look Pepper in the eye]
"Hey, Pep ..." says Tony softly. Pepper puts her hand on Tony's arc reactor and Tony puts his hand on hers. Pepper looks closely at Tony's fatal injuries. Pepper kneels down beside him.
"FRIDAY?"
"Important life functions critical," the lifeless voice explains. Tony smiles with tears in his eyes.
"I can help," everyone turns to Loki, "Please, let me help."
Pepper nods and lets Loki take her place. Loki kneels down next to Tony. He places his hand on Tony's chest and closes his eyes. Green seidr envelops Tony's body and flows through him. The magic disappears into the air and Loki stands up.
"I can't do anything for him...", Loki says sadly as Tony takes a deep breath, "He's still his annoying self."
The Avengers breathe a sigh of relief and sink to their knees. Bruce rushes toward Tony to give him a medical checkup.
Pepper rushes toward Loki and before he can react, she embraces him. At first Loki was frozen, but then he hugs her back.
"Thank you. Tony and I have a four-year-old daughter, through you he'll be able to see her grow up," Pepper says before walking over to Tony. A strange feeling of pride ran through him.

Pairing : youngk/brian-reader
Warnings : swearing, physical violence, mention of harassment
Genre : angst, fluff
Summary : brian, one of your closest friends learns that you slept with one of the guys he hates the most at your school (you didn't actually) , and he gets angry at you because you don't want to talk to him about it, he's also a bit jealous. But the he learns the truth and happy ending 🌹
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were about to crack. If you heard him say something more, you were afraid you'll punch him.
"didn't know you were that type of person y/n"
He was sitting right in front of you across the table. You raised your gaze slowly and looked at him. He was furious, you could feel it even if he tried to remain calm. All he wanted was to provoke you right now... The others around you started talking in murmurs. You bit your lip.
"Brian , calm down it's not the time nor the Pl..." you started calmly trying to avoid a really embarrassing situation
But he didn't seem to care
"is it the time and place to tell everyone that you're just a little whore?"
That's it, you couldn't take it anymore. You couldn't believe he went that far. You stood up before slapping him in the face so hard that the whole cafeteria heard it and was now turned towards you. You felt a heavy silence cover the whole place, as everyone was impatiently waiting for the next thing you were going to do. You didn't think twice and took your plate of spaghetti to pour it all over brian as he remained silent. You gave him a last look and he could see the hurt in your eyes. "fuck you Brian, I thought you were different". You managed to keep your voice from cracking and got out of the cafeteria as fast as you could. You wanted to cry, and you did, in the toilets.
Brian regretted what he said as soon as the words left his mouth. He wasn't one to handle his emotions very well, especially when it was about you. He hurt you, he knew it. But he was still mad at you, for so many reasons, reasons he thought he will never find the courage to tell you. He silently got out of the cafeteria , as everyone laughed at him.
18h36
You were home.
You were going through your last texts with Brian, last night and started reminiscing about everything that happened since then.
*Text*
You : sorry for yesterday night, I had to take care of something important
Bribri : oh I know
You : really?? What do you know
Bribri : with Josh... Out of all the boys out there... You must have lost your mind or smth, wtv, not my business
You : yeah not your business, why you being so rude tho?
Bribri: I'll talk to you tomorrow
You : hello am I talkin to my dad?
*/Text*
He didn't answer anymore. You were so confused. The next morning (today), you two talked, indeed. You didn't quite remember at which point you two got really mad at each other...
*flashback*
"Brian, I don't really get why we are having this conversation.." you said, exhausted
"I just don't think I can be friends with you anymore if you're not being honest with me... I swear you hate that guy since elementary school and now he's talking about you like you're his bitch..." he sighed "he sent that photo of you to everyone y/n! " he looked into your eyes as he almost screamed. You crossed your arms over your chest and raised an eyebrow trying to cover the fact that you were anxious.
"okay then, don't be friends with me.. Gosh why are you being so childish..." you then started walking away, trying to escape the situation.
Brian remained static, he had felt your words as if they were bullets. "don't be friends with me", "so childish". He couldn't believe that was what you thought about him. He was worried about you and you just saw him as an exasperating presence. He exhaled deeply, trying to relax his tense jaw.
Tumblr media
That same morning you texted that Josh, told him you needed to talk to him. You met at the library, on a corner where nobody could see you.
"okay, you got what you wanted, you made me a whore in the eyes of the entire school, can you stop now? Like get to your next prey I don't know, leave me alone"
"y/n, you don't get to tell me what to do. What about you come to my house later and we get some more pictures of you and... "
You didn't listen to his next words. Your mom is a psychologist, and Josh is one of her patients, she's talked to you a bit about him mostly to warn you about him because the boy is Psycho. He was smirking at you. You were absolutely disgusted.
" you're really sick in the head aren't you? What do you think everyone will think about you if I tell them what you were REALLY doing that night? " you threatened him
"don't be so stupid. I already told you that you better not say anything or I'll make my parents ruin your mom's reputation, she will never be able to work again and..."
"I don't care about my mom" you cut him "so if I want to tell the truth I will and I don't care if you ruin her she's a bitch"
He looked at you as if you were crazy. He seemed afraid though.. He stared at you silently before sighing.
"and I AM the psycho right? Okay, okay, I'll stop..."
You gave him a last menacing look before leaving him.
You had lied. You didn't hate your mom and you weren't going to put her career at risk, but at least it seemed to have worked.
Later that day you went to the cafeteria to eat with your usual friends, including Brian. You really didn't want to be cold with him. So you sat in front of him, in hopes of relaxing things with him. Well, it only made things worse. You had never seen Brian so mad at you, he ignored you everytime you talked to him, he didn't even look at you. You had enough. "Brian, stop it now" you said to him multiple times. Sharp words came out of his mouth, such as "y/n can you understand that I can't always be on your side? I have the right to not wanting to talk to you", "are you in lack of attention? Gosh", "why did you even sit in front of me" . You just looked at him in awe, your eyes became wet as you looked away, trying not to lose your temper. Your friend asked you "what's wrong with him? What did you do?" and everyone else saw his attitude towards you. And then you know what happened.
*/flashback*
You sighed deeply, laid in your bed and closed your eyes.
Brian could be such a prick sometimes. He really was someone who could hurt with his words. But you knew him, and he only did that when he was hurt aswell.
But why was he so quick to judge you? Couldn't he wait for you to tell him what is going on? He was being such a child honestly. You spent the night thinking about him.
You put your phone in your sweater's pocket.
You were almost falling asleep when you felt your phone under your belly. You opened your eyes and looked at the screen.
Bribri : I'm outside.
Wtf. You frowned as you got up of your bed, your phone in hand. It was like 2 am.
You : you serious
Bribri: yes
Half awake, you took baby steps to your room's door. You tried not to make a sound while getting down the stairs. You put on your coat and opened the door of your house. You found a freezing Brian standing outside. He looked at you but not for long. His eyes were admiring the floor apparently. You put your hands in the pockets of your coat and approached him slowly.
"you wanna sit?" you offered and you two sat on the chairs that were on your porch. They weren't the most comfortable but it was better than nothing.
"you could have waited tomorrow.." you said in a low voice
"I know I... I probably should just go home and let you sleep.. I'm sorry I d.. I don't know why I.." he started getting up but you grabbed his arm
"brian.. I can't go to sleep now it would be torture."
"right..." he sighed, sitting down
You had your arms crossed, waiting for him to talk but he seemed to be struggling. At the moment you were so angry at him you thought you'd better shut up.
"y/n... I'm so sorry" he started
His voice was low but you heard the sincerity in his words.
"I didn't mean to tell you those things it's just that... I don't know..."
"you called me a whore, in front of everybody"
"I apologize y/n! But You told me I was being childish when I was worried about you and tried to reach to you.. You rejected me and treated me like I was crazy.."
"I know.." you admitted
" y/n you just leave at 2 am at a party without saying anything " he took a deep breath " do you know how much I panicked when you didn't answer your phone that night? I thought something had happened to you... "
" I know, I'm sorry I should have texted you but.. "
" And next thing I know, everyone is saying you spent the night with that bastard " you saw his face change as he said those words, you could sense the anger coming out of him
" Brian..."
"after that you didn't come to school for like two days and you wouldn't even answer my calls or my texts ... so yeah, I was really annoyed at you... You acted as if I didn't exist when all I wanted was to help you, and then you want to act as if nothing happened" he stopped, his eyes were wandering in front of him, in the dark "but it made me realize something, It made me realize.. that I mean nothing to you"
You stared at him in silence as he nervously played with his hands. Tears started to come to your eyes.
"And it hurts honestly, because maybe.. You mean too much to me"
"stop it" you said in a quiver as you stood up to wipe your tears
"yeah I'll stop, don't worry about it" he finally said with a raspy voice as he tried not to let you know he too was about to cry
He quickly stood up and started walking away.
But you followed him.
"Brian stop!"
He did, you walked to him and stood in front of him. Your eyes were glittery and your nose was runny.
"you don't get it, please listen to me!" you felt the tears run down your hot cheeks
"I.. Am not perfect Brian" your voice was trembling"I tried to help a friend who had been drugged at the party and they were about to use her for god knows what, but they.. Josh wouldn't let us go unless I took that photo he's been showing everywhere.."
"wait... What? Why didn't you tell me?!"
"I don't know... I was ashamed.. I didn't want to bother you with my problems... I didn't know how to tell you that... Brian I.." you looked away as you took one deep breath
"did he touch you?! Who else was there y/n?! " he sounded infuriated
"no... He just said if I told anybody he would tell his parents to ruin my mom's reputation. The other guys, I don't know their names but I think they are in the football team. "
"sick bastard.. I forgot his parents were richer than anyone in this town" his hand furiously went through his messy hair
"please don't do anything" you asked him
He looked at you. The anger vanished from him as he saw your face buried in tears. He softly took your face into his hands and gently, with his sleeve, dried your cheeks.
"do you understand now?" you asked
His head tilted "I do"
He silently pulled you into his arms. You felt so vulnerable yet so good at that exact moment. You detached a bit from him in order to look at him.
"so... How much do I mean to you exactly? "
He glued his eyes to yours.
"you mean everything to me" he whispered
You smiled.
"Brian, I'm sorry I made you think I didn't care about you, it's not true."
He smiled too.
"please don't do it ever again"
"also, thank you for being there"
He rubbed his thumb against your rosy cheeks. "I'll always be there for you"
Hi, I'm the same person that send you the sick Bones request (it was great!) and I had another idea... I really like the idea of Bones losing his voice, he's always shouting and making sarcastic comments. Kirk making fun of him before realising how ill and miserable his CMO is and forcing him to rest. Thank you, you're awesome!
(Hey anon! I’m so glad you liked your first fic, and this came in the inbox great timing as I just rewatched all three of the JJ Abrams ST movies and I’m in the mood for some Star Trek! I’ve completely forgotten how much I love these characters, and if anyone wants any more ST, hit up the ask!! ^^ also so sorry I’m taking so long with prompts!! Im currently busy with acting things, so I haven’t had the time!!)
The five year mission had been quite slow the past month, and Bones had been relaxed, doing nothing but performing random experiments on new plants and other resources they had found on their expedition.
However one day, a bunch of the crew had been rushed in with injuries, apparently upsetting some species because of some culture thing they weren’t aware of.
It had been hectic, a shock to his system of idleness, and suddenly being thrown into a high stake, stressful situation.
A huge wave of bleeding bodies and broken bones came in, the whole situation distressing. While Bones didn’t like to be too prideful, it was nothing he couldn’t handle. Of course, he had his trusty crew with him.
However, Bones was a human, who got stressed. And lost his temper.
“YOU! What’s so interesting about the ceiling? Does the ceiling have a broken bone?! Well, does it?! No? Well this man over here does, so get your ass over here!”
“Get me the hypospray–no, no dear, that is not a hypospray! This isn’t a guessing game!”
“Oh my god, look at that supreme speed right there, wow, have you seen anyone move with such agility? Hurry up and get me the damn hypospray!!”
Sarcastic comments were also not an odd occurrence for the doctor.
“Doctor McCoy, he appears to be bleeding..”
“OH REALLY?! I was wondering what this sorcery leaking out of his skin was..bleeding you say?! What is this alien process?! How fascinating!”
“Doctor McCoy, this person has a broken arm,”
“That’s great! How about we go dance around it and worship it!”
“Doctor McCoy, this guy has a small cut on their–”
“Welp, they’re gone. What a tragedy. They’re dead. Rest in peace, what a fine life they lead.”
Needless to say, at the end of the day, McCoy was exhausted.
He was suffering from a splitting headache from overworking and stressing, felt weak to the bones (a pun Kirk would make, and he’d yell at him) and his voice was beginning to go.
Just before the end of the day, he received a message from the captain.
“Bones, my dearest friend, how’s everything going down there? Is my crew still alive?” Kirk chirped, knowing fully that there wasn’t anything too serious happening, and even if there was, his doctor was more than capable of making things okay again. He had much faith in their CMO, even if he would never say it to his face.
Bones rolled his eyes, groaning, “No Jimmy boy, you’ve managed to kill them all this time. I’m surprised they’ve lasted this long anyway, I’ve already prepared the funeral arrangements.”
He groaned louder and flopped on his chair, pinching the bridge of his nose, “No, they’re fine, Jim!! Of course they’re fine, I’ve managed to bring you back from the dead, so of course a few broken bones can be healed!”
He could practically hear the captain raising his eyebrow.
“You said I was barely dead..”
“Oh, shut up!” Bones groaned fondly, and turned off the message.
From up at the bridge, Captain Kirk burst into laughter, slapping his knee and all sorts. He stretched on his chair, and yawned, “Well, let’s call it a day folks, tomorrows another day. We’ll see you all tomorrow.”
Gradually, the people on the bridge began to clear out, leaving Pavel Chekov to himself, looking rather worried.
Many of the crew, including Spock and Bones, had developed a slight parental instinct towards their youngest throughout the years. So naturally, when Kirk spotted the teen unmoving and worried he approached him, giving his hair a little shake.
“What’s up, Pasha?”
Chekov blinked, a little startled and smiled sheepishly, “I’m sorry Keptin’–it’s just zat..Ze Doctor seemed wery..his voice was wery hoarse..I wonder if he is becoming ill?”
Kirk blinked, not even realising how hoarse Bones had sounded until Chekov had pointed it out. The kid was really good at detecting and analysing things; and he wasn’t even sure why he was surprised when he was the youngest ever to be put on the enterprise.
He smiled softly,  giving the teen a pat on the back, “Doctor McCoy will be just fine. He always does, he’s..really a trooper. C'mon Pav, it’s been a long day, go and get some rest.”
The Russian nodded, and got up to leave but still wasn’t so sure.
“Doktor?” Chekov’s voice rang out, waking Bones from his half nap. By half nap, he meant that he was half asleep, not quite asleep and not quite awake.
“Mr.Chekov, I swear to god if you’ve broken anything..”
“No! I just..I brought you some tea,” Chekov said shyly, holding the steaming mug in front of him, looking far too adorable for it to be legal.
Bones’s heart burst with the sight before him, wanting to hug the boy for all of eternity but he could not let him know that he was a massive softie. No way.
“Is this your thing, now, kid? Givin’ up your boy genius thing to become a professional..tea guy?”
Chekov blinked, not knowing what to say.
Bones softened, “I’m joking, kid. I appreciate all this, it’s really sweet and all.”
Chekov’s face lit up with a bright, cheerful smile that made Bones momentarily forget about his splitting headache.
“It’s just zat you sounded sick on the message just there–I waz worried, iz all..Doktor, you must rest..”
Bones rolled his eyes at the kid fondly, “I’ll be fine, Mr Chekov. You should too, I promise I’ll head to my quarters too, in just a bit.”
Chekov frowned and crossed his arms, “Last time we had zis conversation you didn’t. It is now my duty to ensure zat you do.”
Bones groaned and huffed, unable to say no to this actual marshmallow fluff child and then got up, “Fine, lets go.”
Chekov’s frown disappeared and instantly resumed the cheery smile as the two walked out, with the Russian whiz kid dropping him off at his quarters. Much to Bones’s disapproval of course, he did not like being treated like a child.
The last time Bones had gotten sick, he had lied to Chekov and didn’t rest like he said he would. So naturally, when Bones actually did, he expected he wouldn’t be sick like the last time.
But of course, he was sick anyway.
Bones walked into the Medbay hacking, coughing his lungs out onto his sleeve. He felt awful, like he was about to collapse into a million pieces and that any second from now, his legs would betray him.
However, he would use his remaining time before his inevitable collapse to look after the patients from yesterday, who needed follow-up treatment and checkups.
The moment Nurse Chapel laid her eyes on Bones, she was off in a hurry, strutting away to send a message to the bridge. She didn’t even attempt to reason with the doctor, knowing full well how annoying and stubborn the man was, and that he’d never in a thousand years listen to her.
There were 3 people Leonard McCoy would give in to, Nyota Uhura, James Tiberius Kirk and Pavel Chekov, all three of which were at the bridge, and she knew at least one of them would come down and deal with this for her. She could not afford to waste time dragging him away!
Just as Bones continued to cough his way through the medbay, through examinations–to which the injured patients were more worried about him than their own injuries–James Kirk decided to make his presence known.
“Goooood morning Medbay! I have learned that your very own CMO sounds like a dying cat on acid at this very moment, and I am here to witness such an event!” He quipped as he strutted in, looking around for Bones.
It didn’t take him long to spot the doctor, and before he could even come 5 feet to him Bones hissed, quite literally like a cat.
Kirk blinked, “Woah shit, the cat on acid is still alive!”
“James, if you come any closer to me I will actually end your life,” Bones said harshly, although there was no real threat to his words. At least that’s what Kirk thought anyway, because he was more focused on how scratchy and hoarse Bones sounded.
“Oh, I will actually end your life,” Kirk mimicked in a silly, raspy voice to mock Bones.
Bones groaned loudly and continued to scan a patients wounds from yesterday, the patient looking awfully terrified of Bones, afraid he would snap and murder someone.
“What’re you gonna do anyway?” Kirk laughed, “Croak me to death? The sound of your nails on a chalkboard voice rupturing my eardrum as I die a long, painful death?”
Bones whipped around to face him for the first time, glaring daggers, “I will, James, watch me. In fact, I really want to right now.”
Upon seeing the doctor’s face, Kirk felt a sudden change in mood. He looked awful, pale, with dark bags hollowing his eyes. In fact, Kirk was beginning to feel a bit bad for being a shit. Bones must’ve felt horrible.
“Woah–uh, you can do that dude, but uh, after you go get rest and stuff. That is why I’m actually here–”
Kirk was cut off by a sudden harsh fit coming from Bones, as the doctor abruptly pulled away from the patient and turned away from both of them, coughing harshly into his fist. Kirk winced at the awfully chesty and painful sounding coughs, watching as his friend convulsed and shaken by the coughs. His entire frame was racked by them, and in fact, it looked like he could no longer support himself and was about to succumb to the illness and faint.
Kirk was at his side in an instant, wrapping a strong, caring arm around the doctor so he wouldn’t fall, steadying his entire frame. He lightly and gently patted his friend’s back, to help with the release of his coughs.
When Bones finished, he was gasping for air, taking a hot minute to recover himself and regain his breathing. Kirk sighed and gave Bones a pat on the shoulder.
“We’re out of here, you can’t be working now. Jesus, I should’ve listened to Pav last night..I know he got you tea and stuff and he got you to rest, but the kid’s too soft. He can’t force you like I can, his hearts too pure for that. I however can fight you tooth and nail,” Kirk smirked.
“You know what else I can do? Take care of you! Not that Pav can’t do that, it’s just his immune system isn’t the greatest and we need our navigator!”
Bones groaned, “You are not taking care of me, Jim! I will not allow it!”
“Who’s the captain here, hmm?” Kirk challenged, raising an eyebrow as he began to walk the doctor back to his quarters.
To his surprise, Bones didn’t say a word, and the journey there was quiet.
When they finally reached their destination, Bones slowly collapsed onto his bed. He instantaneously pulled his covers up and closed his eyes, face scrunching in a headache. Jim frowned at the sight, he looked so weak and sick. He wished he had realised earlier.
“..Ya really are sick, aren’t you?”
Bones opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
Jim widened his eyes, “Shit, should I get Chapel–”
Bones shook his head and took out his PADD, typing out,
“It’s fine. It will come back as I recover. Don’t worry about it.”
Jim relaxed, and gave him a smirk, “Y'know what? I really like this! You not talking..it’s so peaceful..OW!” He pouted as he rubbed the spot on his arm that had been whacked  by the PADD.
Jim glared, “It makes you more violent than usual though.”
Bones typed out: “You don’t have to take care of me, you know.”
Jim rolled his eyes fondly, “Well I am, to show how great I am.”
Bones typed out, “You’ll get sick.”
Jim laughed heartily, “I don’t get sick!”
Bones rolled his eyes and sighed, watching as Jim walked around to find and watch some kind of programme to keep them both occupied, enjoying this company with his best friend. He felt awful all over, and he couldn’t even shout at Jim (one of life’s greatest pleasures), but he felt happy like this, in silent company.
31: "My hero." and 33: "You better pipe down. I'm not laughing." Because you don't have enough prompts :)
This is part 3 of Doorbells, Beds & Barrels, the multi chap prompt fic I started awhile back. Knocks out a few other prompts and includes some promised pre-revival fluffiness.
“things you said through your teeth”
“Alright. How exactly did your foot get stuck in the barrel?”Chapter 1
Chapter 2
He pulls up outside her apartment building at 6:30 sharp and promptly texts, feeling like a fucking Uber driver as he does so.
Not wanting Scully to regret not taking an Uber, he forces down his annoyance at needing to shower and shave and pick her up at her too new apartment in this too gentrified neighborhood in this too modern building.
He’s reminiscing about her place back in in Georgetown, about them on his couch at Hegel Place when she approaches the car. She thanks him when he gets out to open the car door for her, gives him a soft smile and after seeing her soft smile he doesn’t need to force a damn thing.
The drive there is comfortably quiet, like when they’d have crack of dawn flights to scenic nowhere and weren’t up for chatting but were content to be in the car together.
He makes the effort to not make quips about the prep he knows she endured the night before in order to keep things content. Everything goes smoothly until he walks her into the hospital, and even having read up on everything pertaining to the procedure last night, his nerves kick up when they reach her floor.
“Mulder…”
“You’re sure that this is just a standard…I mean, I only paid for three hour parking. If this turns into some kind of overnight, recovery wing situation I-“
She hugs him then, effectively shutting him up and calming him down.
“I’ll be fine. I promise,” she says, rubbing his back for emphasis as he nods. Forces himself to take a step back and let her walk down the hall with the nurse unaccompanied.
Sitting on an uncomfortable bench he grabs a stack of magazines next to him. Catches up on People and Us Weekly before wandering down to the cafeteria. Getting coffee.
An hour or so passes and he heads back upstairs. Seeing the same nurse from earlier he starts grilling her about Scully’s condition before she relents, walks him over to the recovery room.
“Dana did just fine.”
“Everything checked out then? I know with the procedure that…”
The nurse lets him ramble on about scopes and scans and results and room for error for a solid minute before reassuring him again that everything went fine. She doesn’t open the door to Scully’s room though right away, giving him panic face.
“Is this where you tell me I can’t see her because I’m not her husband? I’m her ride. I was her partner with the F.B.I, I was a witness to her living will. We lived together for-”
“Mr. Mulder, you can go in and see Dana. I just want to let you know she’s still dealing with effects from the anesthesia.”
“What are you saying? She’s not awake?”
“No, she’s awake. She’s just-“
He opens the door and sees her flat on her back in her hospital gown. She’s staring at the ceiling in awe and pointing up at the overhead light fixture. He nods in understanding.
“Oh boy. Yeah, I think I got it from here. Thanks.”
Sitting in the chair by her bed he can’t help but smile, shake his head.
“Scully?”
“It’s so beautiful,” she breathes.
“Yeah, it sure is something. You ready to go?”
“I can’t, cutie.“
“Cutie?”
“Yeah. You’re the cutest one, Muller,“ Scully mumbles. Her hand moves to pet his face and she frowns up at him curiously.
“You got rid of the beard.”
“Yeah. Shaved it off this morning. Figured I wouldn’t earn my tip rocking the mountain man look.”
“Your tip! Yeah…I got a tip for you.”
Reaching onto the table beside the bed she grabs a disposable paper cup and crushes it, tucks it with the utmost seriousness in the breast pocket of his jacket.
“Don’t spend it all in one place,” she says, patting at his chest before she resumes staring at the ceiling.
“What in the hell did they give you, honey,” he mutters, shaking his head and wondering if he can get his hands on whatever it was. She’s still mesmerized by the overhead light and he wonders about the best way to get her attention away from it and back on getting out of the hospital.
“You know if you really can’t leave because of the light, I’ll be the first to tell you we’ve got an even nicer one at the house.”
“No. S‘not that,” she murmurs, raising her left foot a few inches off the bed.
“Well, you’re moving your leg like you want to get up. That’s a good sign.”
“But it’s stuck in there. I can’t get up if it’s stuck in there.“
"Stuck in what?”
Shifting up to a sitting position she gestures to a large object only she can see at the foot of the bed.
“The barrel!” she sputters. “The…the big stupid barrel.”
Inventive, he thinks as he sits forward in his chair.
“The barrel. Alright. How exactly did your foot get stuck in the barrel, Scully?”
Shuffling closer, her foot unmoving in the invisible barrel she leans to whisper in his ear.
“They put it there, Muller.”
“Who put it there, Scully?”
“They did! I saw them do it!”
“Who did?!”
“They did it ‘cause they wanna keep me here.“
“Who wants to keep you here, Scully?” he asks, trying not to actually get worried at her words, even though between them and the way she’s looking at him he’s halfway there already. Even if she is babbling nonsense and out of her head, she’s tapping into some all too real fears of his.
She shushes him then, reaches onto the nightstand again for a notepad and a pencil and he tries not to be worried she feels the need to write things down. She folds the paper and hands it to him before he opens it, squints at the drawing of a little, grey…
He shakes his head, crumples the paper and tosses it to the side as she starts laughing. Hard.
“For Christ’s sake-”
“I had you. I had you big time,” Scully says with a grin, folding her legs under her as he shoots her a glare. One that makes her crack up even more.
“You better pipe down. I’m not laughing.”
“You really thought I was that out of it?” she asks, wiping her eyes.
“The nurse thought as much!“
“You mean Rebecca?”
“She pointed at you through the door, Scully! Implied you were having a religious experience because of the light fixture and that I couldn’t handle it.”
Met with another giggle he rolls his eyes.
“She’s one of the people I talk to who isn’t my mother, Mulder. When she walked with me down the hall I suggested it. She’s a good sport.”
“Did you ask me to be your ride with a plan to deceive me or was it just a snap decision?”
Mulder scoffs as Scully rolls her eyes, gives him a smile.
“I apologize if I scared you. You did it to me once though. Remember when you woke up in the hospital all those years ago and asked me who I was?”
“You’re telling me that ever since then you’ve been plotting your revenge?”
“Maybe,” she teases before her smile goes softer, sadder.
“Maybe I wanted a recent moment between us that I didn’t have to lock away in my head in order to sleep at night.”
“Scully..“
"One that wouldn’t stop you from sleeping in our bed at night,” she says, the soft sadness in her voice effectively breaking his heart. He swallows hard though, manages a smile.
"I didn’t realize you were so concerned for the state of my back, Scully,” he quips as she arches a brow.
“I’m at least as concerned as you were when you walked in here and thought I was high as a kite.”
“It’s not out of the realm of possibility! I’ve seen you on pain meds before.”
“Mulder,” Scully sighs. Rolling her eyes she makes a move to get out of bed. “Even on Vicodin after I got shot I was never…whoa. Jesus.”
Swaying as she stands Scully plants her hands on the side of the bed to brace herself, bows her head.
"Scully?”
“I’m fine, I….I just got up too fast.”
Mulder’s on his feet and next to her in less than a second, slides his arm around her waist as she takes a deep breath.
“Mulder, I’m-”
“Just humor me, Scully. I’ll call the nurse, you get back into bed.”
“I’m fine,” she insists, moving out of his hold.
“Are you sure….you look-“
“I’m alright. I don’t want or need any….” Trailing off she bows her head, takes another deep breath.
"I just want to get out of here.”
“That makes two of us,” Mulder scoffs, shaking his head as he brushes past her. Seeing her hands are still gripping the bedrail though he lets out a slow breath.
“Scully…”
“Damn it, Mulder, I’m-”
“Okay, fine. I’ll get the car,” Mulder says. Heading in the direction of the door he glances back to see her taking small, slow, side steps towards the foot of the bed.
When he slowly makes his way back to her she avoids his eyes but feels concern coming off him in waves.
“I’m okay, I just-“
“What?”
“I just don’t want to let go yet.“
“So don’t let go. It’s okay, Scully. You’re fine. I’m the only one here.”
He wants more than anything to walk over, hold her steady and keep her upright but knows she’ll fight him at every turn if he tries. Staying in place he watches warily as she continues her tiny side steps before reaching the end of the rail.
She stops moving then, still holds on for dear life. Even across the room he can see that her knuckles are as white as her face.
“Scully?”
“I’m afraid I’m gonna fall, Mulder,” she says after a beat, her voice barely a whisper.
Shaking his head he walks over, eases his right arm around her waist as Scully’s left hand flies up, clutches onto his left shoulder.
“It’s okay. I gotcha.”
“Don’t carry me! I don’t want you to carry me,” she says through clenched teeth, earning a nod.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.”
She nods then, but goes to take a step and instinctively tightens her grip on him, feeling her knees wobble.
“We’ll just take small steps, Scully.”
“Just small ones?”
“Small ones,” Mulder repeats as she nods again, starts a slow, too tense shuffle towards the door. “It’ll be fine.”
“You only paid for three hour parking,” Scully reminds, shaking her head in embarrassed frustration. Smiling softly, Mulder holds her a little closer as they inch along.
“We’ll make it work.”
“You promise?” she asks as he turns his head, brushes his lips on the top of her head as they leave the room.
“I promise. We’ll make it work.“
The bell rang, signaling the end of class. The boys and I were quick to pack up our belongings before making a beeline for Mr. Clarke's desk, eager to see if the Heathkit came. All the while Mr. Clarke was reminding the already fleeting class of our homework assignment.
"Remember, finish chapter 12 and answer 12.3 on the difference between an experiment and other forms of science investigation. This will be on the test, which will cover chapters 10 through 12. It will be multiple choice with an essay section." His voice faltered towards the end of his sentence as he realized no one had been paying attention.
His head turned to us and he didn't seem too surprised to see us so eager. Mike couldn't take the wait any longer and spoke up on the behalf of all of us.
"So, did it come?"
Mr. Clarke looked solemn. "Sorry, guys," Our heads began to hang in disappointment at his words. "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but... It came!"
My face lit up with relief. We followed Mr. Clarke down the halls in anticipation. Mike got to the door first and eagerly threw it open, the rest of us close on his tail.
"Yes!"
Since Mike was the first through the door, naturally he dove for the desk chair as the rest of us scuttled over each other, each of trying to get a close look at it. Lucas and I seemed to have the same idea as we fiddled with the knobs on the Heathkit as Mr. Clarke addressed the new device we were all so eager to see.
"The Heathkit ham shack," The boys and I were in awe.
"Ain't she a beaut?" Mr. Clarke sighed. Dustin then spoke up. "I bet you could talk to New York on this thing."
"Think bigger." Said Mr. Clarke. I rose my eyebrow and looked to my teacher as I questioned, "California?"
"Bigger." 'No way.'
"Australia?" Mike pressed. We all turned out heads hopefully to Mr. Clarke as he responded with a smile and the shake of his head. We all exclaimed.
"Oh man," Lucas chuckled in excitement. "When Will sees this, he's totally gonna blow his shit." My smile faltered at the mention of Will, as Mr. Clarke scolds Lucas for his foul language. Lucas apologized turning back to the Heathkit, and I shake my head slightly trying to get my mind off of Will.
Lucas seems to have found the right settings on the dials based on the high pitch frequencies coming out of the Heathkit. Mike has the headphones on and begins to speak into the mic in an Australian accent.
"'Ello, this is Mike Wheela', president of Hawkins Middle AV Club."
Dustin then practically ripped the headphones off of Mike's head, a big goofy grin on his face as he placed them on his head. Mike was in a fit of giggles as he spoke. "What are you doing?" Dustin proceeded to do the exact same thing as Mike just moments ago.
"'Ello, this is Dustin, and this is the secretary and treasurer of Hawkins Middle AV Club. Do you eat kangaroos for breakfast?" I giggle, shaking my head thinking about the poor confused soul who is stuck listening to the boys ramble on. As Lucas grabs for the headphones, I turn around so I'm facing Mr. Clarke, and I give a polite, yet warm smile. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome, Y/n," He returned the smile, seeming appreciative of the fact that at least one of us said 'Thank you'. He has always been a great teacher, and I don't think anybody ever really appreciates or even thanks him very much. I can't imagine how frustrating it can be as a teacher. I laugh to myself at the sight of my friends playfully fighting over who gets to use it next, when our fun gets cut short at the sound of a knock on the door. We all turn our heads to see the Principle walk in, a couple of men behind him.
"Sorry to interrupt, but, uh, may I borrow Y/n, Michael, Lucas, and Dustin?" To say my stomach dropped would be an understatement as I got a better look at the men out in the hallway and realized it was the Chief and one of his officers.
My mouth ran dry.
'Will.'
The four of were seated on the couch in the Principal's office, Chief Hopper, and officer Callahan - I believe his name was - seated in chairs opposite us. I was seated between Mike and Dustin, I kept my mouth shut unless told otherwise, and my hands have woven together in my lap, much too afraid to do otherwise. The boys, on the other hand, were freaking out and all trying to speak at once. I tried nudging them warningly with my elbows but they just ignored me. It seemed I had made the right choice in being quiet, as Hopper seemed to have gotten impatient almost immediately.
"Okay, okay, okay. One at a time all right? You." He points Mike. Mike shakes his head. "You said he takes what?"
"Mirkwood."
"Mirkwood." His face scrunched up in confusion.
"Yes," I croaked involuntarily, wanting to explain to him that it is just our name for road.
"Have you ever heard of Mirkwood?" He turned to the officer.
"I have not. That sounds made up to me." The officer replied. This timid, awkward man gave me the impression he was more of a 'Yes-man' and knew nothing about what he was doing.
"No, it's from Lord of the Rings."
'Oh, here we go.' I think to myself, sighing.
"Well, The Hobbit."
Mike and I look at each other, knowing what's happening.
"It doesn't matter." Lucas retorted.
"Knock it off!" I warn, trying my best to throw my whisper across the couch without drawing attention to myself.
"He asked!" Dustin nearly shouted.
"Guys!" I hissed.
"'He asked'" Lucas mimicking Dustin, not even listening to me.
I looked over at Mike for help but he is already checked out.
They continue talking over each other in a childish manner and the chief leans forward trying to silence them.
"Hey, hey, hey!" They quieted down finally. "What'd I just say? One at a damn time. You." He nodded to me. He seemed to tolerate just Mike and me.
"Mirkwood, as Mike was saying. It is a real road. It's just the name that's made up, it's what we call it. It's where Cornwallis and Kerley meet." I finish.
He seems satisfied, finally having a straightforward answer. He leans back in his chair, talking now to Callahan.
"Yeah, all right, I think I know that—"
"We can show you, if you want." Mike offered hopefully, cutting the chief off mid-sentence.
"I said that I know it!"
"We can help look."
"Yeah" Dustin added hopefully.
"No."
And just like that, the boys begin to talk over each other once again. Knowing better than to waste my breath trying to shut them up, I sit back once again, hands in my lap waiting for the Chief to continue.
"No," He says loud enough to quiet the boys. "After school, you are to all go home. Immediately. That means no biking around looking for your friend, no investigating, no nonsense. This isn't some Lord of the Rings book."
"The Hobbit."
"Shut up!" Lucas gave Dustin a swat on the arm.
Dustin reached over and hit Lucas back, knocking me and Mike back in the process. I roll my eyes in annoyance, and fight every urge I have not to shout at them.
"Hey!"
Mike finally snaps. "Stop it!"
They continue hitting each other and Hopper finally leans over and says quietly, in an irritated tone. "Do I make myself clear?"
I was the only one paying attention so based on his tired, lowered voice and his eyes on me, I could tell he was just talking to me at this point.
I shook my head. "Yes," I mutter.
He nodded his head at me in thanks. All the while, the boys were still bickering. Hopper's gaze landed on the boys, and he stood up and walked forward towards us. The way his tall frame towered over us was overwhelming, and enough to shut the boys up. In a deep, intimidating voice, he repeated his words, slowly.
"Do I make myself... clear?" The boys nod their heads in fear, their necks craning up to meet his eyes.
"Yes, sir."
"Yeah."
"Yes."
I've been laying in my bed, staring at the ceiling for about thirty minutes, give or take a few. I had managed to do all of my school work, including my project that wasn't due for another week and a half, read three books — granted, they were fairly short — and I was still left with nothing to do but worry about Will. The fact that I'm not allowed to help is driving me crazy, even though I keep trying to tell myself the adults are better equipped to deal with this stuff. My thoughts are interrupted by the crackling of the walkie-talkie that was sitting on my dresser. Since our mom couldn't afford two walkie-talkies, Dustin and I share one. I usually have it though so I can talk to Will.
The voice coming through sounded like Mike. Rather than getting my hopes up I just decided to stay put, staring at my ceiling, listening in.
"Lucas, do you copy? It's Mike. Lucas? Over."
"Hey, it's Lucas."
"I know it's you. And say 'over' when you're done talking so I know when you're done. Over." I roll my eyes and smile.
"I'm done. Over." I chuckle at this.
"I'm worried about Will. Over." My smile quickly falls.
I can hear Lucas sigh. "Yeah. This is crazy. Over."
"I was thinking..." Now I was really paying attention. "Will could've cast Protection last night, but he didn't. He cast fireball. Over." I sat up slowly, my eyebrows furrowed at the walkie.
"What's your point? Over."
"My point is... he could've played it safe, but he didn't. He put himself in danger to help the party. Over." A bittersweet smile flutters across my face briefly at this.
"Meet me in ten. Over and out."
'To hell with adults.' I tell myself. I leap off my bed and grab the walkie, knowing they'll still be able to hear me.
"Forgetting someone? Over."
"Y/n? Over." It was Mike.
"Don't worry, I'll let Dustin know. Over and out."
I retract the walkie before shoving it into my bag and heading for Dustin's room.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
Once I had caught Dustin up on everything, the four of us had met up and we are now currently riding down Mirkwood. The thought of my best friend disappearing right here, exactly 24 hours ago was enough to give me chills.
"Ah, man. This is it." Lucas broke the silence as we approached the barrier closing off the path where his bike was supposedly found. We all came to a stop.
For a brief moment, the woods were lit up by lightning in the distance as thunder bellowed across the sky. Dustin looked up at the blanket of clouds above the trees, his voice shaking.
"Hey, guys. You feel that?" He was obviously referring to the rain that fell on his face. I roll my eyes. "I think maybe we should go back."
"No!" Mike and I said simultaneously.
"We're not going back. Just stay close." Mike and Lucas continued on into woods. I was eager to follow them but not without trying to reassure my brother.
"Dustin, he's right. Look, I know you're scared right now, okay? I'm scared too, but can you even imagine how scared Will must be? We have to do this. For Will." I didn't wait for a reply and ran to catch up with Mike and Lucas.
Knowing my brother, he would rather stay in a group than split up. Sure enough, he gave in.
"Hey, guys, wait up!" He said, dropping his bike. "Wait up!"
We started walking again, and as we did it I could feel the rain start to soak my neck and shoulders. I pulled my hood up over my head, turning on my flashlight and set off into the night, eager to find my friend.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
The thunder rumbled, and as we ventured deeper into the forest I could feel the light drizzle of rain evolving into a steady downpour.
"WILL!"
"WILL!" I cried.
"Byers!" Lucas yelled.
Dustin tried a different approach. "I've got your X-Men 134!"
Our flashlights were hardly making a difference at this point. Dustin spoke up again. "Guys, I really think we should turn back."
"Seriously, Dustin?" Lucas exclaimed. "You wanna be a baby, then go home already!"
"I'm just being realistic Lucas!"
"No, you're just being a big sissy."
"Did you ever think Will went missing because he ran into something bad? And we're going to the exact same spot where he was last seen? And we have no weapons or anything?"
I start to slow down once I heard something in the bushes.
"Dustin, shut up." Mike spoke up.
'Okay, thankfully, Mike must have heard it too.'
"I'm just saying, does that seem smart to you?"
"Dustin!" I snap. "Zip it!"
Now the rustling was loud and clear.
"Did you guys hear that?" Mike asks.
I just shake my head, looking around for the source of the noise. The rustling is louder than ever and we all turn in the direction it came from. All our flashlights pointed in that direction. Then we heard it again. It was right behind us. We whipped around to find a girl, with a buzz cut, wearing nothing but 'Benny's Burgers' T-shirt. We all stood there, mouths agape at this girl, shivering and cowering in fear.
