everyone shut up i need to tell suzanne collins directly that the only part of 'the ballad of songbirds and snakes' that got an actual extended period of laughter in my theatre was the "tuberculosis on legs" joke, a joke made at the expense of a young, suffering, dying, sick tribute as she's about to accidentally ingest poison and kill herself because she's so thirsty and sees water and thinks it will make her feel better. this girl who's so sick because of the living conditions in her district, who was doomed as soon as her name was called, who was probably just so relieved to see an un-smashed bottle of water she didn't think anything of it, too exhausted and dehydrated to think anything of it.

I actually kinda want an even smaller one for just one bulb of garlic, there were a bunch of them at the store a few weeks ago but alas, I didn't buy one when I could and now I will have to wait. and also maybe bake some brie.

A beautiful crocheted tablecloth!! Couldn't pass it up. Also it sorta matches the ones my great aunt made so it'll fit in here (they actually had quite a few crocheted things, but due to my wool allergy this was the only one I could actually touch)

And things I resisted buying: a fuckton of shojo manga (so cool! but nothing I really needed and each book was $5-6 and I really didn't want to spend $30+ on books today), and some lamps that would have been perfect for the new shelf if I hadn't already bought some. I need to *not* become a lamp collector. There's only so many lamps one can have...

See. The thing about this is. Why is this definitely about you being ‘a man’? Can you, like, prove it? Why do you automatically discount the possibility that you could just be like... kind of a dick to your friends? Maybe you mansplain to your female ‘friends’ all the time, and they’re just being polite to you. And note it was only your ‘close’ male friends you asked... why are you friends with people who don’t ask you how you’re doing? Sounds low-key like you don’t seek people who value you. Also, umm, what is your relationship with your mother like if she’s not showing most of basic care - you haven’t mentioned if she said anything to your wife? She just sounds like a shitty person lol. You also didn’t mention if you dad said anything - like, is he around or do you just have *ahem* higher standards for your mother?? Add to that, did you make it obvious to people that you like, actually loved your son (like statistically + also we all know that men are by and large disinterested parents who don’t know how to change nappies)? And, last but not least, how do you know it ‘never occurred to them’ - did you ask them? You know, these people you’re supposed to care about and have relationships with? You can just tell people you were hurt, yanno. Maybe they’ll say ‘actually you’re kind of standoffish about these things and you like to demonstrate that you have pride so I felt awkward about bringing it up. Also last time I mentioned something about my son you were sort of dismissive about it and I’ve been holding that hurt inside me’.

I’m not saying any of this to be mean, or even to say that people don’t have cultural expectations of men that affect how they talk to them, but... I have many male friends, and have never not asked them how they’re doing. My male friends have female friends, and they also will liberally ask you how you’re doing. I don’t know a single woman who doesn’t show care and love to their friends. But I do know many men who simply do not reciprocate. Like, the not-so-subtle implication throughout this post here is that women are the problem because women are nice to each other and not men. But really, we all know (and statistics show) that, erm... your problem is other men, dude. And your problem is also you. You may have been socialised to be a certain way, but so have women and if it’s so tragic that you can’t help but be a big gruff emotionless man then it’s also tragic all the miserable things that women ‘bring upon ourselves’, too. I wonder if reddit considers rape and prositution statistics just as ‘horrible’ as the pathos in this post, but I doubt it, since I see posts like the above all the time on the reddit front page (frankly it’s been the perfect aversion therapy for me going on the site). I’m fed up with all this subtle MRA rhetoric. Just get better friends, dude.
