REQUEST (from @november-solarstorms): Celebrating another year of this earth being braced by Tom Hiddleston's presence! Lol. Might I make a prompt request? I feel as though it would be interesting to read from Loki's POV to explore the dynamics between him and a human female who is just as intelligent as he. She has a sharp wit and even sharper tongue. Her sarcastic and clever nature enable her to out-banter Tony Stark, the king of snark himself (may he rest in peace). But she is also just as flirtatious and salacious. She never blushes, never falters, and is incredibly clever. You can decide the nature of their encounter. Really im just in it for a good game of cat and mouse.

A/N: Okay, I had SO MUCH FUN writing this!! And yeah, this will run a bit longer than my usual fics lol. Also, there IS a Loki POV, just keep reading thaaanks <3

Undone by “Darling”

17 hours and 6 white chocolate mochas later, it was finally ready - an upgraded version of Corvus Glaive’s glaive, this one spec-ed out to your fancies and requirements. It was a beast, and definitely not something Nick Fury would ever let you play around with, even if you made it.

Satisfied with your work, you remove your safety goggles and grin at Stark, who is working on his own weapon he scavenged from the Black Order.

‘I’m done!’ you say triumphantly, causing him to look up and groan. ‘How did you finish before me!?’ he lowers his glasses and looks at your weapon. ‘I’m smarter’ you say. ‘I went to MIT’ ‘And I didn’t, yet here we are, both in the same lab’.

He shakes his head, not unlike a petulant child, causing you to laugh.

‘How far along are you?’ you ask. ‘Still running diagnostics’. ‘Still!?’ ‘Have you seen the size of his hammer?’ he gestures to Cull Obsidian’s chain hammer on his work table, but the innuendo doesn’t escape you and you grin at him. He facepalms. ‘Y/n, for god’s sake...’ ‘You’re just tired, or you’d appreciate the joke too’.

You stretch your weary body and let out a deep breath. You’d test the weapon out tomorrow, but for now, you need a nap.

‘Take a load off, Stark. Hammer’ll be there tomorrow’. ‘Oh, you’d like that wouldn’t you...’ he puts his goggles back on and get to work.

Loki’s POV:

Humans are surprising, but I always knew that. I never thought them boring, even if my brother says I do. Humans are of so little power but such incredible resilience that it’s frankly astonishing. I am inclined to believe that sometimes resilience is just stupidity... in most cases, I am right. But that’s not to say I haven’t come across some truly brave people.

Take the Avengers Tower, for example.

Just in here, you have Y/n, a brave soldier with the mind of an intergalactic scavenger, and I do mean that as a compliment. She’s awfully clever, she can build better than Stark, and has a track record of finishing every mission to perfection and before time. And then you have the Super Soldier Steve Rogers, a big muscled, big hearted idiot who often mistakes challenging our enemies for bravery and morality.

The two couldn’t be more different, but they get along like siblings. Not siblings like Thor and I... better adjusted, perhaps.

They sit in front of me, talking about some mission while they play Chess. Her moves are quick but calculated, his take more time because he’s more interested in telling his story than playing the game.

‘...so there I am, no weapons, no shield, bang in the middle of the Serpent Citadel...’

He’s a good storyteller, I’ll give him that. But not as good as Y/n. She paints quite a picture, full of delicious gory details and horribly dark jokes.

‘Steve, you have to pay attention, you’re losing’ she says. ‘Yeah, I don’t actually know how to play chess, I just wanted you to listen to my story’.

She looks up at him, almost offended. ‘STEVE...’ ‘Cool, I’m gonna go wrap Stark into a game of Battleships and tell him about my fight with Copperhead’.

She laughs as he leaves the room, and she puts the chess pieces away.

‘We could play?’ I ask her. ‘Is the God in a mood to lose?’ ‘Over confidence isn’t attractive in anybody’. ‘Oh darling, neither is telling someone what is and isn’t attractive’.

She’s never called me that before, and in the context it should seem cutting, but it isn’t. ‘Darling?’ ‘Problem?’ ‘It’s quite a term of endearment to set someone straight’.

She says nothing.

‘Cat got your tongue?’ I tease her. She only smiles and continues putting the pieces away neatly. Stark’s chess set is gold and black, all individually carved pieces. The pawns are all Iron Man suits, but that’s to be expected. She handles them with the care Stark would.

‘I mean...’ I continue, ‘honestly, if someone heard, they’d never let you live it down’.

And she carries on, unbothered.

‘Y/n!’ ‘Oh dear, look at you come completely undone with just one term of endearment’ she comments, shutting the chess set. ‘Whatever would happen if I held your hand?’

The very thought of it seemed to drain my brain of blood. I unwillingly glanced at her hands, working the lock mechanism of the box, her blue veins prominent.

‘Cat got your tongue?’ she asked.

I stood up, the human emotion of embarrassment becoming too familiar for me. ‘I’ll have to see you at lunch’. ‘Sure, darling’.

Oh, I hate how she’s enjoying this.

The next day, Y/n booked a training room to test out the Glaive, and Stark had a rusty but working chain hammer. Steve insists on trying it out anyway, and now our breakfast is being spent on discouraging him from doing that.

‘Guys... if nothing else, I’ll still have my shield. Let me test it out!’ ‘Y/n’s glaive cuts through Vibranium, you know that, right?’ Stark says. ‘Y/n wouldn’t do that’. ‘Oh yes she would’ Y/n says nonchalantly as she sinks her teeth into a bacon and egg sandwich.

As she does, the yolk runs down her fingers. She makes a sound at the inconvenience and sets the sandwich down, then grabs a napkin. I’m hardly ever crude, but the energy it took not to take her hand and lick off the yolk myself could burn every star in the galaxy.

Captain America scrunches his nose at her remark, severely offended.

‘In any case, that shield barely covers your giant body. It will force Stark to make you a new one’. ‘What do you care about his giant body’ Stark says. ‘It’s America’s ass, Tony’ she takes a sip of her iced coffee. Steve blushes, and Tony rolls his eyes.

The training facility is magic, of course, somewhere between a mirror dimension and Wanda’s reality powers creating a safe cocoon inside the building so no one can be harmed. Y/n hardly trusted anybody to fight with her except Thor, but given the nature of Corvus’ Glaive, she knew magic would be required.

And so she called me.

After getting into my battle armour, I stepped into the facility, equipped with my sceptre and the teachings of the witches of Asgard.

She whistles as I walk in. ‘Trying to distract me from killing you?’ ‘Are you?’ I ask. She’s dressed in a black bodysuit, details of purple in her belt and weapon harnesses. ‘Why yes, I am. Glad you noticed’.

The glaive is on the floor, and she stomps her foot on one part of it so it swivels up and neatly places itself in her hand. She smiles.

‘Try to keep up. I’m not just looking for eye candy in a training partner, darling’ she says, getting into battle stance.

With nothing left to say for the second time this week, I aim the sceptre at her and the stone at the end glows.

She charges and I shoot at her, but she spins the glaive and creates a shield which absorbs the energy.

She continues to charge at me. I shoot again, and again the glaive takes the hit. Not a scratch on her.

Once she comes closer, she simply places the flat end of the weapon against my chest, sending me hurtling back into a wall.

She spins the glaive and laughs.

‘Compliments of Wakanda. It absorbs any hits and charges up with kinetic energy’.

I get up on my feet. This is far from over. I create multiple illusions to surround her, all of them brandishing knives, Chitauri tech, and sceptres.

‘Damn, suddenly my whole evening has opened up’ she says, looking around.

Even my clones look around at each other puzzled.

‘Come on then, who’s up?’ she spins the glaive around. ‘One at a time or all at once, baby’.

They charge at her, and I expected her to fight them off at once... instead she plants the staff on the ground and ducks, and a semi-circle shell grows from the top of the staff, down to the floor... like a mini fortress, completely impenetrable. It could, no doubt, continue to take hits and build up kinetic energy, so I call off the clones.

She gets up and retracts the shell. ‘Nanotech’ she grins at me. ‘The whole shell sits in a disk. It can withstand bombs and even a moon’. ‘Is there any tech you haven’t adopted?’ ‘I’m an intergalactic scavenger, aren’t I?’

I stare at her, horrified. Can she read minds?

‘Maybe I can. Or maybe I heard you tell Stark when he was complaining about me finishing my weapon first’.

Silence.

‘Also, darling, you’re awfully predictable in your fighting’.

She picks up every trick and tech she sees, so beating her is less about weapons and more about cunning.

No problem. Cunning is my specialty.

‘Ready now?’ she asks. ‘Mhm’.

She takes a deep breath to ready herself, her eyes shutting slightly. Once they open back up, she stares in shock.

In my Jotun form, I give her my most menacing smile.

She cocks her head to the side, studying my icy blue skin.

The illusion I cast of myself approaches behind her, dagger in hand. Once it’s close enough and I can almost taste my victory, she raises the glaive and in one swift motion, sticks it into its abdomen.

The illusion disappears into green light.

‘Cute’ she remarks. She points the glaive at me. ‘What else you got for me?’ I shift back to my Asgardian form and sigh. ‘You win’.

Y/n laughs and lowers her weapon. ‘Oh darling, I won the second you walked in wearing all that leather’. She winks at me, then walks out of the facility. I feel a blush creep to my face, much against my will.

‘Maybe you should stick to your guns, Tony’ Y/n says, ‘Fancy suits is it for you, chain hammers may be overshooting it’. ‘Is that what they taught you in the back alley you learnt ironmongery from?’ ‘Yes! Do you want their number, I’m sure they’ll have a spot on the waiting list for you’.

Ah. Y/n’s relationship with Stark seemed more like mine with Thor. While they banter, Steve and Natasha tear up from laughing. I wouldn’t go so far as to call this domestic, but it certainly is comfortable.

‘Come on, the glaive can’t be that good, right Loki?’ Stark asks.

The company looks at me expectantly. ‘To say her weapon isn’t good enough means to insult your own tech, Stark. Everything about it is founded on your theories’.

‘So technically, it’s my brain that made the glaive so cool’ he tells Y/n. ‘Yeah, you could say that. The glaive comes from the same mind that manufactured Captain America’s dinner plate’.

Steve doesn’t find that one funny, but Natasha does, sending her into peals of laughter.

‘Oh whatever’ Tony huffs. ‘I’m going back to the lab’.

He stands up and Y/n grabs his arm. ‘Aww Tony, I’m just kidding!’ she pats his hand, ‘Look, you’re a brilliant inventor, we all have our slow days’.

He sighs and nods, and holds her hand. ‘Thanks... I guess I’m just not in my element, you know?’ ‘Yeah...’ she keeps patting his hand.

And the feeling of domesticity creeps in. We really are all a family. Y/n smiles encouragingly at Tony, and Tony seems more relaxed.

‘So, you want me to get you the number of that ironmongery, or...?’ ‘OH FOR...’ he snatches his arm away and storms out of the room, with Steve and Nat losing it all over again.

oh thanks for these Layers of Allyship re: humoring my repeated [anger geography sign tapping] and checking for things and then sending me asks about it all to invite yet more Consideration.........yeah i feel like i mentioned it at least once in tags or smthing lol??? but here comes yet more consideration / giving it an In The Text post if that doesn’t exist already yet either

like, yeah sure what with winston originally talking to lauren and mafee about this and taylor Happening to walk in on it, he probably wasn’t necessarily planning to go off on his Indignant Monologue to taylor right then and there, but the fact remains that he was willing to do so, and i definitely think that that wouldn’t be the case if he didn’t have this Respect for them and think that they have respect for him in turn, and if he didn’t also think that that mutual respect is holding hands with mutually valuing each other. like, he wouldn’t say it if he didn’t think taylor might actually listen / consider what he says, and he wouldn’t even Want to say it if he didn’t give a shit about them, because he’s not just complaining about “um i simply ask for more money,” it’s about the fact he Feels Disrespected by the implied deprioritization of tmc employees and that the way this (false lol) choice is presented to them being Unfair and disingenuous. like, you could (and im sure most viewers do) interpret the other stuff he says as just him backing up his “Pay Me” argument when all he really cares about is the Pay Me part, but a) that’s not how We roll and b) doesn’t make sense with winston being just as happy as anyone else in 4x12with taylor Apologizing re: many of these 4x11 points, despite them not saying they were gonna change the Bonus situation lol, and c) it Does make sense to think that the Mutual Respect between taylor and winston matters to him due to [see: the rest of this post]

well wait lol first of all yeah sure the money Must matter to him b/c nobody could possibly be in the world of High Finance as a passion project (except for taylor apparently lmao cuz i mean we know that the Real reason they are determined to stick with hedge fundery (and involved in the first place) is b/c they are the best part of the show and elevate all the other Lesser Elements of it as well) and also we can figure that this was probably winston’s first year working a Big Time Official Job and he doesn’t have the savings that other ppl might when they’ve been in the business multiple years, and this seems to be backed up by lauren referring to him as they guy who’d be the First One Smothered by either taking a bonus cut by 40% or not getting that bonus at all until a whole other year, which, like he seems to also imply, is also Unhelpful in that surely these investment finance people turn around and invest their own finances, and Bonus Now is better than Bonus Then b/c.....interest....Long Shares.......and also just like tfw you want your job to pay you.......but anyways Seriously [next paragraph]

cuz winston *must* be working at Taylor Mason Capital b/c he really values working with taylor more than, say, wanting a job that will make him the most money, or will necessarily look the best on a resumé if he’s just looking to up his stats, b/c yeah, this is sure an unlikely opportunity for him where this is what we’re assuming is his First Fancy Job and he’s getting to be the Top Quant right out of the gate, but he must also know that like, it’s still like “oh so you were head quant at a brand new fund :/” and also he must know that there’s a Risk with said fund and he might even end up having been head quant at a new fund that burned out really quick, super impressive........and, we Know that winston *knows* how good he is at what he does, even though he keeps getting dunked on for that like he’s sooo conceited lol like. he IS that good, sorry!!!! why should he downplay it, we don’t actually see him being one of these shitheads with a fragile ego trying to prove themselves Superior or whatever.....ANYWAYS yeah the point being that, winston claiming to have a lot of offers already in the interview might very well Not be any kind of bluff, and he’d surely know that he could rise through the Quant Ranks quickly enough at some other fund even if he started out as anything but Our Main Quant at those places.......and if Getting Tf Paid Top Dollar was really his primary concern, “go with the brand new hedge fund which doesn’t have Established History / Experience / Clout and has the one big investor but who knows what’ll come next and any business that Just opened is not your safest bet even if you trust in your own skill and in that of your ceo and you Know that even if you’re not immediately destroyed, funds will be tighter / of a Lesser Amount than at a bigger established fund”.........the now-dramatic-irony of him talking about how those Tech Firms Out West pay guarantees, not bonuses.........like, when he was trying to get onboard with axe cap, he was obvs interested in trying to leverage to get Paid more, which is like, not necessarily winston wanting to be a trillionaire but also just how stupidly everyone’s supposed to like Play The Game of negotiating / leveraging / calling your employer’s bluff to get a certain starting salary / get a raise or whatever, dumb as hell baked-in Requirement........discuss your wages with coworkers gang!!! anyways. and but Also winston makes it clear when interviewing for axe cap that Working With Taylor Mason has appeal, even if he’s flippant about it, cuz he’s flippant about all of it cuz that’s his shtick here.....

like, when it’s Taylor Alone who calls him back eventually, he’s fine with meeting up with Just Them, and later on meeting up with Just Them (and the other quants, rip) again, and agrees to work in this lil basement evidently Not on axe cap premises b/c he’d been at axe cap’s offices and this is Not That Place......and yeah him talking about taylor selling axe on using his algorithm in kompenso sure implies that winston has this whole time Assumed that all of this was still ultimately in the service of axe cap.......and he was apparently fine with reporting to Taylor Alone and not getting to rub elbows with any other higher-ups, and he’s obviously pleased well enough with a “good work :)” from taylor and isn’t like “hey be sure to tell axe & co i did this singlehandedly etc” or anything, and he’s not really complaining about the whole “work in this lil basement Not at axe cap hq with taylor mason dropping in at least once to check on you and that’s about it” situation, which obviously is hardly that “You’re A Valued Axe Cap Employee” treatment one might expect if they wanted that.....winston’s glad that taylor called him, he’s trying to appeal to them and what *they* want to see rather than how he tried to go for what he thinks [a place like axe cap] would wanna see like he did in the interview, he’s showing up at this weird basement rendezvous to be on a 3 person quant team of taylor’s, he’s fine to not only do this on his own but also accept those increased demands that make it a [fifty(? or 15, either way) phds would work on this]-Level task, and then he’s glad just to have taylor’s approval at the end of the day.......they Wouldn’t have been able to promise him any leverage of “please do your best work on this” with like, promotions / clout within axe cap or axe-cap-levels of Lots Of Payment b/c like, well taylor wouldn’t outright lie anyways but also Especially wouldn’t if they wanted to keep this quant around for tmc, so winston must never have been asking about that kind of thing

and then, bless your Missing Scene fic but there’s zero canon content re: “uh how/when did taylor break it to winston that this algorithm was for their own fund actually and btw do you want to work for that fund instead,” but presumably it went smoothly enough, he was already happy to Effectively work for them alone apparently even if he still thought that yeah, he was working for taylor who was working for axe........just Yeah altogether it’s evident that “Working With Taylor Mason” must matter more to him than “working with any Other big name financiers” or “getting paid as much as he can get” or “raking in that clout asap to leverage with Other jobs or just like, in general.”

and then of course you have the fact that taylor is Recognizing his ability by calling him back and offering him this job, going “despite your demeanor your skills are superior” and “those other two were sweet, but you’re more talented, i need you,” [praying hands emoji], and giving him this Second Chance and entrusting him with this Solo re: building this algorithm which, unbeknownst at the time to him, is really this linchpin of their hopes & dreams of launching their own secret fund here, and really they must’ve been planning from the start to keep him around if he succeeded b/c it’s not like the algorithm and their whole planned Quant Department wouldn’t continue to be integral to the fund’s success, it wouldn’t really be ideal to have this guy be the one to build an algorithm to reel in an investor who’s working in.....wait for it......billions of dollars here, and then be like, okay bye dude. they must Know how good he is same as winston knows how good he is, and him being Head Quant from the very start was surely never just about mase cap having precious few employees at the very start of things....they could’ve like given him that Lead Position temporarily or whatever, they’re ceo. but they really do value him as like, maybe he doesn’t have the ideal ~personality~ for what fucking ever, either for being Properly Assertive and Impressively Flashy like axe cap might want, or just easy to work with, which taylor would care more about than axe cap would lol, but yknow, they value his Abilities and surely they must also value his efforts re: I Promise To Try and re: his really singlehandedly making that brilliant amazing algorithm which evidently did the trick as they hoped it would

and then......dare i get to the Emotional part of things, the Interpersonal....the anger and the love...............

i mean already when winnie n tay are having their post-math-meetup meetup, aka the first time they’re meeting After their disastrous really-first meeting aka the Interview, you have winston taking a way more grounded approach to this “yeah i want to work for you please accept me” process which is obviously in response to what he thinks Taylor wants from him based on the mess of the interview, evident thanks to winston telling them that he’s been thinking about all of that.......and i mean, part of taylor’s whole thing is they have that grounded approach pretty much always lol, (or try to....Want to...), but they sure seem to Also be bringing this effort to Accommodate him based on the hot mess of the interview, wherein yeah they wouldn’t’ve expected to have to ever interact again with this person they were dunking into the trash (and of course from that Meta Perspective, the scene when originally written was meant to be winston’s only appearance ever), but they really seem to also be bringing a more dialed down approach, letting him talk first and going along with his “you ever done math meetup” intro until he’s the one who changes the subject, and i really see that Head Tilt as a sympathetic one lol, not necessarily like “awww :’0″ levels lmao but still like. they Know he’s likely to have some [emotional vulnerability] re: what last went down between them since they weren’t especially gentle with him then, and they like, demonstrably give a shit about that fact lol. they’re also not just wholly swinging in the other direction to make up for it or anything lol but they’re Also making it clear that, yknow, they’re willing to work with him For Real, not just in this “are you willing to work for me, y/n, okay great” way, but in this way of [winston making an effort to make things easier on taylor] and [taylor making an effort to make things easier on winston] which is already playing out here between them.

and the whole matter of winston’s seemingly genuine Dismay at messing up even part of this exchange, i.e. the “[wince-ston] damn it, sorry,” like, sure maybe he just really wants the job, but [see: everything above about how he Must primarily want to work with taylor re: wanting any of these jobs lol] and, after all, he “oh shit, sorry”s @ them when he’s well-established as their Head Quant in ep 4x08 and generally shows this directed-at-self displeasure at thinking he’s messed something up even without some clear “your (potential) job is on the line” element......he just Doesn’t Want To Disappoint Taylor Themself, doesn’t need some particular fear of further repercussion behind that.

and speaking of Lack Of Fear, you Know we love to point out how kompenso (and really winston’s :/ + “sure, why not :\”ness at the end of 3x09 lol) demonstrates that winston isn’t afraid of taylor either as an [intense and unusually-demeanor'd person who Does apparently strike people as Scary(tm) sometimes lol] or as this Esteemed Rising Star Axe Cap Higher-Up or simply as his de facto boss.........he’s not raring to tell them that the other quants bailed b/c of his own disapproval lol, but he’s honest as soon as they deduce as much, the tone of “fine, yes, big time” + his standing up to get even closer to them instead of just shaking in his desk chair like :c pls forgive me obviously does Not convey that he’s terrified of them, and then the rest of that interaction jsut being like, ugh god so fucking essential, they’re both able to stand face to face and be like I Am Looking Directly At It / I Do See It re: each other, both of them just continuing to be Honest and Direct with each other, God.....taylor might’ve swatted his metaphor away but he was not all that put out, and then they’re Using His Own Language by bringing it back three seconds later, like, yeah sure at this point they have a vested interest in this individual quant (the only one left lol) accepting this Demanding Task, but a) they’re not exactly playing it cool on that front, they Just said “i need You,” it’s unlikely that this is just some all manipulative tactic here by encouraging his metaphor after all lol and that’s hardly their style anyways even if they Can be strategic(tm) about things, and b) they’ve Just Previously adopted his own words lol with winston having said “as for not being a dick” and taylor saying “you backslid into being a dick” (combining His Phrasing with Theirs aka “if you promise not to backslide”....god!!!!!!)

and so then yeah to top it all off winston even ~pushes his luck~ lol by being a lil deliberately rude re: his ex-coworkers lmaoo, and you get taylor’s Reaction to being sort of tested here to be Closing Off Their Expression (speaking of....their tiny lil Eyebrow Twitch when winston infers that he’s making something to pitch to an investor.....god!!!!!! a) winnie n tay and b) emmy) and making it clear that their interest in him acting Easy To Work With was a practical matter......winston watching them go up the stairs, taylor looking back at him as they Ascend and he gets back to his desk.....jesus

the point being!!! they vibe with each other so well by Kompenso already and just *get* how the other operates and communicates and Neither Of Them are offput by the other, Neither Of Them are unwilling or uninterested in meeting each other where they’re at, and each exerting this effort to really work with each other........and how winston is Not intimidated by taylor as either someone who’s so ~weird~ and can be so Intense, or as someone who is his boss lol........which yknow we always also point out as Important re: tayston developing from this point, where taylor would be careful in how they approach winston about fwbship but would feel like it was even reasonable to consider it in the first place thanks to not having to feel like oh he definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable being honest if he wanted to say no / wasn’t sure

and then 4x03, with winston not acting terrified about there being potential Algorithm Problems, and taylor making sure to be like “don’t you dare blame latency” lol like which obv he May Have been planning to mention lol since he’s intending to give this technical answer rather than throwing out his Front Running / Interference Theory like mafee then does.....fun little moment too anyways.......taylor Allowing winston’s tangent about being cassandra and emails and “it’s pronounced owned,” like, they’re not raring to Interrupt / cut him off even if it’s Not obvious what he has to say is absolutely crucial and considered relevant by everyone else, and they’re not telling him he’s a stupid idiot and wasting their time or anything else before sending him away.......imagine. and just think about the beauty of winston very intently / earnestly saying his “i’m cassandra: Always Seeing The Future” right to taylor.

and in 4x08 they build on his metaphor Again after having just Validated him despite everyone else really wanting to do the opposite lol......i “lol” but would everyone else lay off a little Lol......his self-reproach upon Registering that disapproval / oh-no-i’ve-messed-upness again.......then despite winston Standing Right Beside and then Sitting Right Behind taylor they don’t really interact l o l .....we have taylor being all “why is He so happy” and silently observing his Solo “i won” moment, rip, but also congrats.....and then i suppose that covers the Prior To 4x11 stuff lol

just......even re: the relative little we’ve Seen between them up to that point, winston might not have intended to talk to taylor right then, and he might or might not have intended to eventually talk to them in front of anyone else, but You Know He Knows that taylor listens to him, and that he doesn’t have to like, say things in what other people think is The Right And Effective Way to talk (even by billions’s fucking off the shits standards on that front lol), because taylor Does care about what he actually means and what his actual intentions are, not just “oh that very direct/honest thing you said Seemed rude whether you intended it or not”.......the “sad” after his yngwie malmsteen metaphor was the only time they’ve critiqued something like that lol and they then used that metaphor, So, and they’ve copied him calling himself a dick lol, and they built on his Sword metaphor, and they’ve just always been interested in Understanding him and communicating effectively with him, not in trying to get him to communicate differently or just making sure he knows He Should Feel Bad about how he Does communicate, though god knows the latter is something that everyone else seems to be somewhat #about. god knows some axe capper would have that “are you finished?” simply be the Purely Rhetorical intro to their barrage of Dunking-Upon insults, although it sure seems possible that that could’ve been sort of gently dismissive enough anyways to Encourage winston to not be finished even if maybe he would’ve stopped there otherwise.....but everyone else follows taylor’s lead in Not Actually Interrupting Him at any point, despite all the 9_9 and >:| as it were, and like, even though taylor then lets this whole thing end just with mafee going tf off on winston and bullying him into deferring and would-be deference, b/c winston might have this amount of moxie and he might be honest and he might not be scared of taylor (or anyone else here really) but he’s obviously not that assertive and definitely not that aggressive, he’s self-loathing, he’s easily put out, and all of this just bolsters how much it means that he communicates so well with taylor, b/c they’re Not interested in anything that would be counterproductive to actual effective communication but which might be “productive” if they had a goal of wanting to twist his arm about anything or pressure him into acting a certain way or just fueling their own ego or sense of superiority, axe cap style. they Value all his actual input and they have this respect for him where they don’t Want to bully him even if it’s not that difficult, like, yeah mafee was being mean to him for sure and trying to insult him into simply shutting tf up rather than like, actually responding to any of his points or doing anything but reinforcing them, but also winston has been Put Out by milder [negative responses] too, it’s of course more than just “i respect you too much to like, yell at you and try to diminish you”

and Frankly Winston Was Right and he may have been Indignant and he may not have been ~polite~ about it (though like, relative to how he is generally this Direct And Honest, there’s also not all that much evidence he’s deliberately trying to add some extra servings of Rudeness or anything) but once again like with the “as for not being a dick, i can’t absolute guarantee it” moment and the “fine, yes, big time” moment, and the “im sure it’ll go faster without the dead weight; Whoops ;)” moment, and the [talking about the algorithm problems] moment, and him freely jumping in with the “this plan might get us killed (not literally)” and “it’s b/c it sucks that they had to decapitate their dad, also not literally lol....although...” remarks, he’s just like, never afraid to tell taylor something that sure might not be the most pleasant for them to hear, and sure might not be something they Want to hear. and what’s Honest is that he’s Angry about this, and they won’t want to hear that and that they will even less want to hear his Honest Thoughts about why this is unfair, but he’s willing to say that to them, and even though we were like “haha boy winston if this isn’t fixed big time you might wanna quit :/” it’s also like, he must’ve trusted them to not wanna just fire him for lack of reverence to his ceo, and we can Juxtapose this with a) the scene that we’re set up to juxtapose it with, wherein a group of axe cappers carefully tell axe he’s being dumb as hell and might fuck all of them over, and axe tells them all to shut the fuck up b/c He Is Their Sun and he can do what he wants and get the fuck out of here, and we can also juxtapose it with b) winston being jumped on immediately in The Interview for ~lack of reverence~ to the potential employer, putting on this cocksure hotshot act (trying to..) and daring to express confidence in himself and be like “i should be interviewing you” / you should be selling to Me lol......jump to 4x11 and winston is caught off guard, he’s not putting on any kind of act, he’s not trying to appeal to anyone, sure mafee might turn it around on his [last we checked, the quant hates himself]ness, but this wasn’t about Winston Lashing Out b/c he’s angry at himself, he’s angry at Them for not valuing him, for what he perceives as them not even *really* giving them the option of the 60% Now approach, which sure seems to be justified seeing as apparently nobody but lauren goes for it and after winston invokes the Peer Pressure / pressure to seem Loyal / Committed by deferring, mafee immediately uses that [social pressure] to crush his dissent........where was i. right like. winston’s truly just Mad At Someone Else this time, he wouldn’t be here if his self-esteem was so low that he was immediately ready to just accept and absorb this treatment, and he Knows that taylor will actually listen to him which is their fuckin Mutual Respect thing and who tf else does that for him all the time, and he knows that taylor doesn’t value their own ego above everything else Unlike Some People, and he knows that he can be honest and get an honest reaction and that their honest reaction to his honesty is not “ugh you’re stupid / annoying / rude / etc,” b/c he’s Not, and that might be everyone else’s idea of him to some degree, but taylor Gets him better than that

and then you don’t quite have taylor being obviously Angry back, but they’re not exactly thrilled, and letting mafee go off on winston / effectively telling him they expect him to consider That the response and in turn respond back to that, can sure be interpreted as an expression of something a little short of pure goodwill and best intentions towards him here lol......again, i lol through the pain.......winston only has further reason to be angry, his Complaints weren’t resolved in the least and he came in all “i feel disrespected” and surely that’s only been doubled down on, b/c this isn’t Just “pay me goddamnit,” it’s really also just about the fundamental respect itself, which he figured that taylor cares about too, and so this would be something he could appeal to / expect them to earnestly.....he feels like none of them are being valued more than this feud with axe cap, he (maybe) feels like said feud is causing the quants’ work to be deprioritized in favor of more elaborate schemes based on “what will screw axe over specifically,” he feels like he’s not being valued as a Very Important Employee, he feels like this False Choice thanks to Social Pressure is insult to injury, like they’re not supposed to get a real chance to question this. boy i’m really just going off talking about any and all aspects of this huh, where’s the Anger Geography core here

well here it is: winston doesn’t ever talk to taylor in any more Filtered way due to them being his boss / him feeling a need to be more careful around them, if anything, they’re the one person he can be Least filtered around, b/c they care about What He Actually Means and aren’t all hung up on whether his communication style seems gratingly weird / wrong / offputting. winston isn’t bringing any particular leverage to this situation, yeah sure he pointed out He’s Valuable but he also did that in the interview with even less leverage and in the basement when he thought he was just working on some weird side project for axe cap in this remote quant dungeon - he’s counting on them to just Listen To Him and care about what he means, same as he always does and like they’ve done thus far. and he’s Temporarily Burned by this, which is tragic, but then 4x12 happens, and who knows if taylor and winston talked between these scenes at all cuz billions sure won’t say at all, but either way winston sure seems to pick up on the fact that taylor is responding to his Complaints here, the implication they were taking a too-axe-esque approach to them now answered by taylor deliberately differentiating themself from axe, and asserting that they Do value their employees and their contributions, and that taylor has this responsibility to them, and maybe Had gone astray there with the revenge jag but aren’t actually interested in that being the core of everything.........winston is Validated and we realize it and he seems to realize it lol, he definitely Was listened to, and he sure wasn’t like fired or anything, he Could Be Angry with them and that wasn’t going to lead to taylor wanting to sever even the Professional relationship or anything like that. sure seems to be no grudge held between them during the “q is for quantitative, babey” scene there lol and yeah it’s billions and shit moves fast / people will roll with A Lot of mistreatment apparently (see: winston also does not seem to harbor any grudge against mafee here lol but who knows) but the Fact Is, here they are, having found A Way Out Of [Anger], after having had this altercation which wouldn’t even have been possible if Winston hadn’t felt it was possible for them to interact like this, for him to be mad and be honest about that anger and the hows and whys of it and for that Not to be a dead end between them or something that could shatter the relationship entirely. and he was Validated!!!!

and guess who i also love to quote and paraphrase lol i also think of mariame kaba talking about interpersonal Conflict being possible Opportunities in a relationship, because working through said conflict can allow the relationship to grow / deepen / strengthen. which sure seems to Hold Hands with this idea: that you can Be Angry with someone because you already know that won’t break the relationship, and that even if you don’t already know that, going through that experience / process of Being Angry with someone and coming out the other side together will show that the relationship can handle that / will have involved gaining tools to be able to handle that going forward. and really like, we’ve seen winston Forgive taylor’s anger at him right off, and that may not be the sweeping heights of love but it came from Understanding (and....low self-es steam probably lol) but no really, he Shows that he understands why they reacted like that by behaving in this way that he figures is more in line with what they actually want, just talking and being direct with no boxes or [wags] or standard boring interview questions or posturing, showing he’s willing to work with them in the “please hire me” and “i’ll try to Behave” ways lol........and taylor is offering their own patience and sympathy and restraint and Understanding and willingness to bend.......things are happening on an emotional plane between them here.

and then after winston chooses to be on board with mase cap, and after he’s worked for them so long that it’s comp time baby, and after these few Sample Interactions we’ve seen in which taylor doesn’t cut winston down or show contempt for him and they continue to directly or indirectly validate him, winston can be Angry with them and taylor can (definitely Sorta) be Angry back, and winston surely even Stayed Angry after that scene in 4x11, and he didn’t quit, and was that [terrible self-esteem actually lol] or was it him believing that there could be a way out of this state of anger between him and taylor? both?? we get to decide!! b/c he’s sure not Validated and Vindicated until later lol.....what does he sit there on that couch alone in that room and Think in those moments...........and then once things Are better resolved, they have this whole [episode of conflict] in their history, and like is the whole Point of all of this, that’s hardly necessarily just some awful and unfortunate thing.......their relationship can survive something like that, and the conflict sure sparked this kind of Genuine Interaction between them which couldn’t have happened if winston just shied away from all this / kept it to himself because he didn’t think taylor would Listen or Care or Understand.

and it’s Not Just About The Money, and even when he expresses that he’s upset about this perceived disrespect / not being valued as an employee, we Know that he’s not someone who’s got this need to feel superior to everybody else / like he’s always Winning, and we know he’s not after Maximum Clout, but he does want to Work With taylor and he evidently wants to feel valued By Them, who does happen to be his boss and does have this avenue to potentially treat any employees unfairly. and we know that winston *knows* in this objective way how good his work is, and both winston and taylor have acknowledged that yeah, His Work / professional quantly ablities have value, so winston Knows he should expect for that to be valued in the form of “your quantributions are important and you’re getting paid to reflect that”........and that he feels like he’s for once not being Allowed Honesty re: everyone supposedly being pressured into deferring is like..........what do he and taylor have if not earnest, open communication b/c they both value and respect what the other Really Has To Say!!!!!! that’s winnie n tay and it’s also tayston.

which, speaking of which, Sidenote: when it comes to tayston hcs we generally have this as a “they’re not currently doing Their Thing at this point anyways, and maybe the fact that that’s been ended (and they Haven’t been talking through this particular conflict yet) is adding to the tension / anger / feeling of not being valued hahaha rip” deal lol, but also if they Were still currently in their fwb/[???]ship like obviously this would spill over and probably require an at-least-temporary halt to give everyone some space seeing as it’d be a little impossible to truly completely Set That Aside in the recent aftermath l o l ......but despite the lingering tension / awkwardness that would be present whenever they Do next meetup [imagine: an I Was On The Phone With You, Sweetheart phonecall prior to 4x12′s scene?? wrow] the layers to that ensuing sex lol......reunion sex? makeup sex? not-hate-sex-but-maybe-still-needing-to-vent-a-lil-Emotional-frustration-maybe sex? maybe all of the above and more

ANYWAYS even i don’t know why this is so long, and also it’s 7am. i definitely think that winston trusted taylor and the Relationship between them to be able to handle Anger (his, for once, lol) and for that Anger to even potentially be something Constructive. and he was right. and in 4x12 he’s there with them at the very end, wearing the tmc logo, standing behind them in the hellhole which is axe cap hq, knowing that taylor is the one person (here, certainly) who definitely Gets and who’s Got him, who’s asserted this loyalty and commitment to him after he’s certainly done that re: them, and once again winston definitely has this Choice to be here with them just like he must’ve had that choice to join up with their fund in the first place, he’s never been trapped with them or forced into alliance with them, and we just Know that he’s not choosing to be here just for Linkedin reasons / what’s best for career advancement and/or for raking it in as best as he can manage and/or for gaining clout and status or whatever, and we sure never see him reaping some kind of deluxe treatment/benefits just for being closely associated with taylor / having their approval. everything we see points to winston caring most about what happens between him and taylor and that he gets to work with them and that he’s here because of that mutual respect and value for each other.

and really, the show also repeatedly tells us that winston Does basically have these world-class abilities and *is* that valuable, and we know that winston Knows how good he is, and he must’ve legitimately had all those offers and known that he’s really good enough that these places Should compete for him. he must’ve known that he has this Potential here and all of these options laid out in front of him, and he takes taylor’s call and shows up in a basement for them and singlehandedly writes an algorithm good enough to found their fund upon and he follows them there when now he’s got this Proof of just how incredible his work is and could’ve leveraged that anywhere else. but his relationship with taylor has always had this personal aspect to it and the fact is that, even with his choice of Paths laid out in front of him, he chose and keeps choosing the geography of winnie n tay. ppl really are just like “lol ur just sad bcuz ur not allowed to be lazy” when mentally ill & disabled people complain about capitalism making them actually want to commit suicide because it makes us all seem like burdens.

how can you have such a lack of empathy?? for a fucking Second just imagine what it would be like from that persons perspective before telling them that they should suck it up and just do it (somehow?? despite their situations making that near impossible, if not outright).

idk what to tell you if you think that this is a thing that is okay to let happen. it is not uncommon to any degree for people in this type of situation to feel like a burden and to consider things as drastic as suicide. that isn’t uncommon. that happens, a lot. but you’d rather believe that we are all in some kind of evil group of dumb kids who pretend just because they want to be lazy??? there are kids who do that, yeah, but the majority of people who complain about this kind of thing aren’t like that.

you can continue to tell us that we are awful people for thinking this way, and i want you to know that it isn’t helping. you saying that shit is upright making it worse. even if it WAS true, what is the point of saying it? you are implying that people who go through this Deserve to feel like burdens and Deserve to want to commit suicide, even if that wasn’t your intention. that is what we see when you type that out.

you all act like we never have tried and we are just sitting with our unknowing perceptions of how things work, but let me tell you that almost all of us have tried, multiple times at that. finding a job with these circumstances in the first place is incredibly difficult. i can sometimes do an okay job at getting people to believe that i’m normal because my appearance isn’t really affected by what i go through, while other people don’t have that grace. and even then, even when i was hired after months and months of searching and being turned down over and over and over because my personality wasn’t what they wanted..... my employer would eventually learn that i am not normal. it’s Really hard to hide that type of thing when it affects you every single day of your life, turns out.

even taking the horrible process of getting hired into account, people will act like when you are hired that you are good and it’s all easy from there. it isn’t. it really isn’t. i worked as long as i did for my past jobs because i went in thinking that everything wrong with me would go away when i finally got to that point. because that’s what people act like. unfortunately, that isn’t how it works. i would find myself dreading work after a month or two. by the third month i would consider suicide nearly every minute on the job, to the point of me getting so scared that my employer would notice and i would get fired or i would end up quitting because i don’t want to die just yet.

you can go on and on about how young adults these days are just too sensitive and don’t understand anything, but like... im starting to think that everyone from older generations that felt this way just... died? killed themselves? or couldn’t find a job and ended up on the streets? you know that tons of homeless people are mentally ill or disabled to some extent, right? you know that, right??? and even with all of that you still continue to say how entitled we all are when we literally just want to survive.

my dream for what i want my future to be isn’t crazy or over the top. i just want to live with my boyfriend, get married in a few years, and maybe try to go to school when i feel ready. my goal in life is to just be happy. it isn’t to be rich or famous like you all seem to think it is. i just want to survive with the person i love. i want to be happy. why is that such an awful thing to want? how am i a bad person for wanting to be happy?

im quiet and always do as im told. i dont go out of my way to make things hard for other people. yes, doing things can be really hard for me, and they normally are. but ill end up doing it, it just might take a while. the problem with how things work is the expectation of happening fast and without issue. i’ve always done things slowly because of how much thought i put into everything. it has always, even since i was very young, difficult for me to work myself towards doing something.

this isn’t something that developed during high school like so many people seem to assume. i’ve been depressed and anxious for as long as i can remember. i remember being REALLY weird when i was very young, and that’s because i didn’t understand what was wrong with me. i was miserable most of the time, even as early as elementary school. i feel like i didn’t ever have the happy, lazy experience that everyone assumes i’m trying to keep in my life. i can’t keep that if i never had it. and even if i could somehow make it happen, it hasn’t. i’m in a pretty understanding situation with my boyfriend, and i’m given time to do things. he understands how hard things are for me, and doesn’t automatically just call me lazy like everyone else seems to. it makes me feel like i have some kind of worth.

isn’t it depressing to think about the fact that i will often find myself thinking that i am worthless because of the lack of what i do? i will find myself looking at me at the core and think “yeah this is worthless, and it should be thrown away”. even when i do well i think this way. nothing is ever enough, and no matter how hard i work to ignore it, my issues won’t magically vanish. i WISH they did. and i’ve tried so hard to make that happen. but it doesn’t. this isn’t something that is simply just a made up problem that i’ve convinced myself to believe. i was suffering from this before i even knew you COULD be like this. i just always thought that i was weird and broken and unlovable and... worthless. even as a kid. i tried the same tactic of making myself do tons of things in order to try to make it go away, but it didn’t work. being the smart kid never worked. being the kid who really wanted to have fun and play but assumed i couldn’t because i needed to work harder to be ‘normal’ like all the other kids Never Worked. i never had more than 5 friends at a time for the large majority of my school life. that got a little better in high school when i started to accept whats wrong with me, but even then it was still pretty bleak.

i just. i don’t get how people can come on here, look at a post written by someone struggling for other people struggling, and then tell everyone who agrees with it that they are all just lazy and awful people. does that make you feel good about yourself? you know that we all already know that we are far from normal, right? i know only one or two people who have gone through this all without mental illness or disability contributing, but so many more who experience it with those things being the core.

if you hate disabled and mentally ill people, just say it. because you acting like you are morally superior because you are lucky enough to be able to tolerate the work environment of today is obviously how you feel. we know that people hate us. we do. i’ve been verbally abused plenty over this exact thing, from lots of different people acting like they “know the best” for me.

please just. stop talking to us if you are so unwilling to listen. we listen to you constantly. its a rare case to come across other people being loud about this type of thing without outright looking for it. if you look for it, you can find it, but i wouldn’t have ever thought to do that for most of my life. the only reason i learned what was wrong with me was because a school counselor in middle school got so concerned for me that she made me see her once a week to talk about how i see the world. and turns out, most people DONT see it the way i do! wow! sounds stupid but i actually had NO idea that i saw things so differently than other people. what a shocker, right? well, it sure was for me when i was just learning then that some people have things like depression or anxiety.

Hello! I'm writing a Doctor/OC story and was wondering if you could give me some advice? Because Doctor Who is a tv show, there are lots of chapters to write, and not all episodes are great. I have a hard time writing chapters based on episodes i never enjoyed and don't know what to do. It feels like the chapters are just there and dont really do anything. I also just wanted to say I love your writing. I've read all of your doctor who stories multiple times and im glad you are back! :)

Hey :) And of course! :)

I’ve struggled with that too, there are quite a few episodes I’m not exactly thrilled to have to write or that just feel like not much happened in. Mostly that happens with the Doctor-lite episodes to me. What I try to do in those cases is make more original content of what the Doctor or OC are doing behind the scenes, it makes it more interesting to me as you can make it whatever you want :)

Other times, it’s an episode I just didn’t love :/ What I try to do in those cases is put a spin on the episode. With the OC there, there’s a chance things won’t happen exactly like in the episode or there may be a different series of events due to things they might change. Like, I was ok with the Dream Lord episode, but I didn’t love it. So what I did in some cases was change it completely, making it about a different Dream Lord or a different dream entirely. The OC can be a great way to alter an episode and make it more exciting. You can follow the OC when they split up from the Doctor in some areas. What was the drawing world like with the Isolus? What if the OC was taken near the start of the episode and had to navigate through that till the Doctor appeared? What if the OC was left on Earth during Smith and Jones and had to track down UNIT or Sarah Jane for help? What if the OC didn’t go with the Doctor on Midnight? That can be a way to make it a little different, split up the OC and the Doctor and examine what THEY learn behind the scenes.

Or there could be things to do with the OC that put a spin on an episode to make it a bit more humorous. What if the OC was sick during one? Now they have to go on this adventure sneezing up a storm! What if they get knocked out for some reason and the Doctor has to work out a way to carry them around and keep them safe? Or they’re loopy for some reason and the Doctor has to make sure they don’t get themselves killed? What if they’re somewhere they really do NOT want to be, and complain like a toddler the way the Doctor does some times? Or it’s a place no one would expect them to be utterly THRILLED to be? :)

Or you can always bring in an older companion, if possible, bring in Jenny the Doctor’s daughter or Sarah Jane or Jack or Mickey and Martha for a trip. Get their take on it :)

Another thing that is an option is to avoid the episode. There were some I wished I’d done that in, like Love and Monsters with LINDA lol :)

I would say try to find a spin or a twist that you can put on an episode you’re not fond of to try and make it a bit more interesting to you :)

The last thing you expected was spending you day off with your professor. You didn’t necessarily complain about it though, you both completely cancelled any plans for the day and just hung out around your apartment. At first it was fun and games, until you both fought like 5 year olds and almost burned the whole building down.

“I wanted to make us breakfast! I’m not good at this stuff!” Your hands raise in the air for defense against the laughing man across from you.

“You didn’t have to tell me that! I already knew!” He pointed to the pan on the stove before bending over in laughter.

“I’m sorry! This didn’t goes as planned!” You dragged your hands to the side of your head in frustration while eyeing down your now crying guest and burnt eggs. He finally stopped laughing before covering his smile with his hands and pointing at the ‘food’.

“Did you come to that conclusion from the fact that everything was just on fire?”

You had to admit, you were a bit grumpy but maybe it was leftover mood from when he took your whole queen sized bed from you earlier that morning.

“I swear to god James if you don’t give me at least 5% of my bed, I’m making you sleep on the floor!” Half of your body was falling off the bed, if it weren’t for his grip on your waist, you’d be on the cold hard ground.

“Just make me your mattress, babe.” His arms pulled you to the point where your whole body was laying on top of his, and he wasn’t the definition of comfortable, or at least not in the position.

“FOR FUCKS SAKES JAMES!”

You had to admit, you have no idea what put you both in such a childish mood. It may have made the day funnier but overall it was you both just bickering over stupid, petty things like an old couple on a hot summer day.

“I thought you said you were going to do the dishes for me.” Your arms rested on your hips as you focused your gaze at the man. He didn’t move an inch, he was too fixated on playing the video game you offered him an hour earlier.

“I thought you said that since I’m your guest you would do them?” His eyes didn’t leave the screen, he was too busy trying to win the round.

“Well, you fucking thought wrong, pretty boy.” A smile played on your lips as you threw the towel at his head, covering his eyes and making him lose.

“Seriously?? I would have won the trophy!”

Although it was funny to see him whine and do your chores, the aftermath was horrible. You hated it and boy did he enjoy ever second of it.

“How dare you do that to me!” You dramatically tossed the controller onto the group before ripping the blanket off of Bucky and pulling it over your head in despair.

“It’s a game, (Y/N), besides you made me lose not even 30 minutes ago by tossing a dirty rag in my face.” You felt his arms tug the thick blanket surrounding you but you wouldn’t budge. You refused to move until he apologized for doing something so horrible to you.

“It’s not just a game! You hit me with a red shell as soon as I was going to cross the finish line! I would have been first! It’s not fair!” Your knees touched your chest as you complained in a kid-like fashion.

“Aw come here, let me comfort you.” His arms found your hips hidden beneath the covers before lifting your body and pulling you into his lap.

“Not until you say sorry!” His hands found the opening of the blanket and tugged on it until he found your face. Your head poked out in disgust before crawling back to the other side of the couch.

“Jesus Christ, (Y/N). It’s Mario Kart. Also are you going to completely avoid the fact that there were 4 rounds and you beat me in every round but the last one because I hit you with that shell? Overall you still won!” He was laughing as he tried to pull you back towards him by your feet.

“Say sorry!”

The asshole never said sorry. Yeah, so what if you won, but 4-0 is so much better than 3-1. You weren’t going to let him have it. So what did you do? Tried your best to annoy him.

“Can you please stop!” His hands were holding his head. He was trying to read this forum for his job while it was silent in the room, but you wouldn’t let him have it. Well, not until he apologize to you. You stopped for a moment before staring at him with a smirk, taking a sip from the straw in your drink.

He smiled in a sigh of relief from the silence you gave him. "Thank you!”

“99 bottles of beer on the wall! 99 bottles of beer! Take one down, pass it around! 98 bottles of beer on the wall!” Off-key, man was your tone so off-key, but who cared? Well, clearly he did. That’s really all you needed though. While singing the song loudly, a smile played on your lips.

”(Y/N)!“ After that whole fiasco, it led you and him to your currently clingy and youthful mood. It was a silent hour of just cuddling on your couch with legs intertwined. You both were scrolling down multiple social media pages on your cellular devices without speaking a word. The silence eventually killed him, so he tried to start a civil conversation. Of course, it turned out to be just another stupid arguement.

"Did you watch the news today?” His face was inches from yours, his hot breath hitting your lips. The side of your mouth tugged up, giving him a smirk.

“Was it about you apologizing for cheating in Mario kart?” You shifted your body, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him closer.

“No, I didn’t even chea-“ Small wrinkles formed as he furrowed his eyebrows in confusion and defense.

“Then I don’t care, go fuck yourself.” Letting go of your close hold on him, only to ignore whatever he was saying to continue scrolling over old photos on Facebook.

His hand snatched the device from your hand and stared at the thing that was taking your attention away from him. He made a face of anger, confusion and a pinch of jealousy. It was a photo of you and a guy, he seemed around the same age as you. Dark brown hair, green eyes and gripping hands around your waist. You both were smiling to your hearts content with arms linking around each other.

“Who the fuck is he?” His wrist turned, allowing you to see the familiar photo.

“Oh god, James. You sure will be the death of me.” You grabbed the phone and clicked the tag on the 'mysterious’ man in the photo, his profile soon popped up. “Scott Lang, he’s my cousin.”

“Sure he is!” His arm slide under your back before pulling you closer to him in a dominant and overprotective way. “I know how you have a thing for men who are tall, with dark hair and light eyes!”

“Bloody hell, James. That’s my cousin! You know what, to prove it to you, I’ll call him right now!” You exited out of Facebook before clicking your contacts and typing in his name.

“How will I know if it’s actually him?”

“Dude, I’ll let you see the contact photo and name.”

“Don’t you dude me.” You rolled your eyes before clicking Scotts contact and practically shoving the device in his face.

“Look, look. Scott Lang. Cousin! And….. dialing!”

While the phone started to ring, you hit speaker and lifted it between you and Bucky so he could hear the conversation. It rung a few more times before a click was heard and a familiar voice came through.

“(Y/N)?”

“Hey Scotty!” A huge smile was spread onto your face as you heard the voice of your favorite cousin.

“Oh hey, (Y/N). Wow, I haven’t talked to you in ages! Sure is reassuring to hear your voice.”

“Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! I was just wanting to ask a quick question!”

“Oh yeah? Ask away.” Scott was always so open to things, that’s why you loved him so much.

“We’re first cousins, right? Like my mom and your dad are siblings, right?” A giggle escaped your lips before you quickly covered your mouth with a hand.

“Uh…. yeah? Did you forget or something?” The confusion in his voice was noticeable, and man did you find that hilarious.

“Oh no, I was just looking at old photos and someone happened to see the photo of us two and claimed you were my boyfriend, or significant other or something.”

“Oh, yikes. No, we’re cousins, if that… person is listening.” His award tone rung through the phone, you sure did miss how awkward he is.

“Oh he is, thanks Scotty! By the way, we gotta meet up soon. I miss you a lot, bud. Talk to you later?”

The call soon ended with small goodbyes. You lifted yourself from the couch before eyeing down the embarrassed James. You took your leg and placed it over his body and straddled him.

“Men who are tall, with dark hair and light eyes, huh? I’ll give you that. I’m a sucker for anything, though.” The same smirk from before was visible on your lips, you leaned your body down to where your faces were centimeters apart.

“Don’t act like I don’t know what type of men you like, just compare the similarities between me and Jacob Mcevoy and you’ll have it all down. I don’t know why but you act like every man with those characteristics are gods most beautiful creations.”

“James McAvoy. It’s not that hard you know? But… do you want to know what’s truly beautiful?” You poked your finger against his chest as he let out a small chuckle. His hands lifted to your sides before slowly caressing your skin and settling at your hips.

“Oh lord, don’t be cheesy and say it’s me.” He gave you a cheeky smile while a tint of pink rises to his face.

“Good because was going to say Tom Hiddleston. Tall, oh boy is he tall. Dark-ish hair, depends on what movie your watching, and his beautiful blue eyes. What I’d give just to be in the same room as that man.” You dramatically sat up and set your hands on his chest lightly. Your eyes were wide with a sparkling sensation, obviously trying to tick off the man beneath you. His whole smile dropped, you could feel his irritation radiate off his skin.

“At this point I should just go talk to myself in the mirror instead of talking to you, it’s the only way I can have a intelligent conversation, I mean clearly I’m more attracted than Jacob Mcevoy or Ron Littleston.”

“Littleston is probably the most ironic name you could give him.” You chuckled at your own little innuendo before continuing. “And go ahead, I don’t care what you think!”

“Oh really?” The grip on your waist was still there and getting harder by the second. Within seconds he pulled you back down to his body with a playful look.

“Yeah, I find it hard to relate with people who pronounce the 'g’ in lasagna.”

'Easy.’ You thought to yourself.

“Um, excuse me. Aren’t you the one who pronounces bologna like buh-log-nuh?”

'Damnit! Never mind.’ You thought giggling to yourself, overlooking this whole situation and seeing how dumb you both were. It’s like you guys were made for each other.

“Touché!”

“So we’re even, right?” “Mhmm”

Your face found its way to the crook of his neck while you let out the approving hum. His hands ran up to the top of your back and to the bottom while your hands massaged his scalp by playing with his hair.

“Good, because I may or may not have been invited to a family dinner in a few days and I’m bringing you as my date so they’ll stop bugging me about Dolores.” You lifted your head before staring into his eyes.

“Aw! Are you, James Buchanan Barnes, asking me out?”

“You know what? I’ll take it back! I’m sure Dolores would love to come with me.” He began to sit up and lifted you off of him, before he had the chance you pushed him back down and sat in the same position as before.

“There is no way in hell I’d let you go with Dolores, I’d feel too bad!” His hands found his way back to your bottom and back.

“So, you’ll go with me right? You’ll have to dress up all fancy, if you don’t have anything like that I can buy you something.” His tone went from joking to serious, you knew your best option was to go with him. You were always there for him, you would always support him. If that meant possibly embarrassing yourself in front of his entire family; then so be it. If you’re going to be an embarrassing mess then you’ll be his embarrassing mess.

“No. I have this dress I got for my last birthday that’ll work. So yeah, I’ll go. Anything for you, James.” Your comment made his teeth shine. You couldn’t help it, as much as you both fought and bickered, you loved him too much. You’d never want to put him in harms way.

“Thank you, (Y/N).”

Tagging ships for maximum peace & happiness

Hey Jonsa fam.

If like me you’ve noticed multiple kerfluffles over what constitutes appropriate ship tagging on AO3, maybe you will find this a useful post.

A quick disclaimer first: I’m not saying everyone should do this, or that maximum peace = never receiving criticism ever, but this is what has seemed to work for me, both as a writer and a reader.

Most people in most fandoms find and read fic by tracking Relationship tags on AO3, as far as I can tell. That means that when they click on “Jon Snow/Sansa Stark” on their front page, they are hoping to find stories about that ship in particular. However, some ship tags are plagued with content that is not about that ship at all but where the tagged pairing is mentioned in a few lines, or where one half of the ship is gone/dead and the tagged relationship is in the past, or where that tagged ship appears but one-half is the villain and the other character ends up with someone else.

It doesn’t happen a lot to Jon/Sansa, actually. That is, there are just NOT a lot of fics that are tagged J/S but turn out to be really about some other ship. It happens, but it’s pretty minimal, IME. And I think that may be facilitating the confusion, misunderstanding, and different expectations surrounding this issue.

But personally I have been part of ships that have a very difficult time finding actual content for their ships through the AO3 tags. Just try finding Pepper/Tony or Jane/Thor content in the MCU fandom, anything at all that actually contains anything meaningful about those relationships ... good luck.

And those are ships that are tagged thousands of times. Smaller ships arguably have it much worse. You see there’s a new fic this week, or this month ... you get your hopes up ... and then - BAM! Crushed.

I think people who have not experienced this particular problem at a large scale can underestimate how intensely frustrating it can be to be in that position, so I have a lot of sympathy for people who are in those tags looking for content about that ship and politely ask others to re-tag their fic.

These tagging critics are correct in suggesting that tagging on AO3 is predominantly for the purpose of helping users find content of interest to them, not just labeling for the sake of complete description. The fact is that many fics in some ship tags do not have content of interest to those shippers, even if the content is there. (Obviously not everyone agrees about what counts as “of interest” ... more on that below.)

On the other hand, if you include a background ship or reflection on a past relationship, it’s possible, even likely, that someone will complain about not having been warned in advance that their NOTP has appeared.

So what is a content creator to do?

A simple “middle ground” solution is to use the freeform/additional tag space to notify readers about the background ships instead of the relationship tag. This has two benefits:

1) when it’s a freeform tag, it doesn’t “syn” to, or connect with, the relationship tag, so it won’t show up in that relationship tag’s feed, thus not disappointing those shippers who were hoping for substantial content for their ship

2) it simultaneously warns potential readers at first glance of unpleasant content they may prefer to avoid

This is an example of how I did this on one of my fics:

Forgive my third-grade-looking computer mouse handwriting. But the only relationship tag is “Jon Snow/Sansa Stark” (which is the focus of the story, which is only of interest to people using the Jon/Sansa tag), then you have the character tags “Jon Snow” and “Sansa Stark,” and then everything from “past Daenerys/Jon” on is a freeform tag.

Again, this isn’t something everyone has to do, but it is what I do, and so far (knock on wood) I have escaped tagging complaints unscathed. I think it’s the most polite and inoffensive solution.

How do you know what counts as “of interest” to people searching for a particular tag?

There is a really messy gray area here, and honestly, nothing is going to satisfy 100% of people 100% of the time. We just have to use our best judgment.

So here’s what I do. My personal rule of thumb for answering “should I tag this relationship as a relationship in this fic?” is: Does it have an arc of its own? That is, does something about the relationship itself change from beginning to end?

If it’s just appearing in the background here and there, and the relationship itself is static, it doesn’t have an arc. If the relationship is broken up or one of them is dead and the fic is about a character moving on to some other ship, that would also suggest it doesn’t have an arc of its own. In these cases, I would suggest using a freeform tag in place of a relationship tag.

The arc test isn’t perfect by any means.

For example, a relationship doesn’t need to take up much space in order to have an arc. Take The Last Love Song of Anthony E. Stark by jibrailis. It’s the most-kudosed fic in the Loki/Sif tag. It’s 42,000 words long and almost entirely about Steve/Tony. Generously, maybe 500 words total are dedicated to the background Loki/Sif aspect. But it does have an arc. And for me, trawling through the ship tag, it did scratch an itch ... even if it also left me itching for more. LOL. On the other hand, I’m sure a lot of Loki/Sif shippers are unhappy that that fic is the first thing that comes up when you search by kudos. Like I said, everyone isn’t going to agree. But the “arc test” offers authors a reasonable defense to criticism, at least.

If you’re juggling multiple relationships in one story, there are also ways to indicate the relative importance of each ship so no one gets confused or disappointed.

In lieu of AO3 ever adding a primary/secondary relationship tag distinction, you can add modifiers to the relationship tags in parentheses. So say you’re writing a fic that has three different ships in it, all with arcs of their own. Instead of just tagging Arya Stark/Gendry Waters, Jon Snow/Sansa Stark, and Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister, you might tag with:

Arya Stark/Gendry Waters (primary) Jon Snow/Sansa Stark (secondary) Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister (secondary)

These tags ARE synned to the basic tags and they WILL show up in all their respective relationship tag feeds, and they also immediately alert the reader to how important each is in the story. Handy!

Other solutions, like tagging in a certain order to indicate importance, might be more subject to misunderstanding because not everyone tags that way or interprets tags that way. Although many authors do this, it isn’t immediately visible or obvious, and plenty of authors also tag differently. For example, I know one great fic that tags ships in chronological order of appearance: first the focus is on X/Y, then the focus shifts to Y/Z. They’re “equal” in screentime and importance, so that seemed like a reasonable way to do things by the author. I agree with them. Similarly, some tag the “final” or “endgame” ship last (also understandable). And that’s to say nothing of authors who just tag in order of whatever comes into their head first, or alphabetically, or whatever other idiosyncratic system they have.

Again, not something every single person is going to be happy with. But, I think, a pretty decent solution that will satisfy a large number of readers.

Living Re-wired

I had stopped writing for years. My grandfather had died and so did my interest in using writing as my outlet. A friend suggested that I start again. I was weary and chose to ignore her thoughtful gesture. Now here I am fighting the toughest battle I've ever fought and I think its time I start writing...not just for me but for everyone around me.

Since 2013, I have known about my condition. At 23 years old I was told I was too young to have these kind of spinal problems, that didn't keep me from having them though. Ive known since then that the road to healing was going to be long, painful and full of surgeries. When the hospital I worked at basically threw me to the wolves and forgot about me, I was hurt. When the doctor I was sent to see basically said I was faking it and sent me BACK to work...just to re-injure my back again, I was angry. Thats when I finally stopped cowering and stood up to fight.

I’ve been fighting for 4 years dealing with the most debilitating chronic back pain I have ever known. I have multiple levels of spinal degeneration from L3 to S1. I have had 3 herniated disks. My body has gone through now two surgeries to keep me mobile and reduce the pain. All temporarily successful.

Im writing today about surgery #2. I am a little over 2 weeks post op. This is my second micro-discectomy with laminectomy. First surgery on the right side of my spine though.

I have found that the hardest part of all of this is re-wiring your brain. Normal things you once did freely before are now things you should not be doing. How do you remember that though?

My husband and I took the dog to the dog beach yesterday and a ball rolled by. My natural reaction was to bend down and pick it up...like a normal person would do. In that moment of reaching down I realized that this was NOT something I was supposed to be doing. OOPS. Then I felt a ZING of pain in my left low back. I instantly was so angry with myself.

“I know better.” “Why did I do that?” ”Im an idiot.” “Why was I even at the dog beach?” “I should be at home.” “I shouldn't put myself around all of these triggers to bend down.”

CAN YOU SAY NEGATIVE SELF TALK? Sheesh. (half of them were true)

If anything I have remained firm on the fact that I will NOT let this pain keep me from living my life. EVER. I will do normal things to the best of my ability. Going to the dog beach was one of those things.

So, There I am on the beach thinking, “I don't think I can walk back to the car.” “They are going to have to medi-vac me in a damn helicopter just because I wanted to pick up a fucking tennis ball.” As I limped and tried to shuffle and throw my left leg to walk... pain shot through my entire body. I felt like an idiot. I felt like a side show act. I can't even pick up a tennis ball. Then my thoughts continued to roll downward. “How can I even have a baby?” “ I can't even lift my leg to walk much less tote around a baby and a diaper bag.”

With that I was crushed. I hate how quickly I slide down the rabbit hole of depressing thoughts. I eventually did walk back to the car with the help of my adorable husband.

I then took as many pain killers as I was able to and tried to forget about the world.

Mind you, I am such a joyful person. God has blessed me in so many beautiful ways. I wake up everyday so excited to see who I get to meet weather its at the grocery store or at Target. I get overly giddy at the thought of being able to help someone, anyone, thats my love language that God intently made me to have. So, I am the nurturing helper of all people. Here I am now, the hurt one who can barely nurture her 7 month old puppy. Now I have to be the one cared for seeing as I can't do much for myself. Its mortifying. I don't know what each day could bring. Im in more pain than Ive ever been in. Even sitting down scares me because I'm not sure if I can get back up again.

I haven't worked in a hospital in about 4 years. I love nursing. I love my job. It gives me so much joy. Now, I can't do hospital nursing anymore. I do home health, visiting older people in their homes, checking on their meds, helping with chores they can't do anymore, that kind of thing. I only do it when my back isn't flaring up. I can go a whole year sometimes with no huge upset. I get the occasional spasm but I am able to work through it. My pain tolerance is exceptionally high. So when I say Im in pain, I'm actually in TONS of pain.

[[I’ll never forget meeting a Doctor who was in his 70′s. He looked at my MRI and told me he expected me to be in a wheel chair. He also smugly stated that his spine at 73, was better than mine was at (then) 24. He later “ironically,” had a skiing accident and hurt his back. Karma much? lol]]

Today, today is hard. Tomorrow, It could be harder. The point is that I'm ready for it. Whatever life throws at me, I have Jesus, Im not afraid to face it because I'm never alone. The worst part about today? Not having my husband here with me. I was so mortified sitting in the chair and realizing that at every try to get up, I couldn't. THAT was scary. It took me 5 or 6 tries to get up. Why couldn't I? The pain that shot through my body was so severe that I almost couldn't breathe at each attempt. THE worst part was that I was getting up to go to the bathroom. Some days I feel like one of my elderly patients. How the tables have turned.

Fear is a real thing. I have always been fearless, to a fault at times. Nothing has scared me more than this has though. Im afraid to get into the jacuzzi alone because I might not be able to get out. Im afraid to walk the dog alone in fear something would happen and I wouldn’t be able to walk home.

I have the most incredible husband in the world. He has been with me since the start of all of this back drama. I couldn't do life without him. I feel terrible that he has to take on so much because I can't help. He has done the cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry and dog duty for two months now. Being the caretaker that I am, its so hard to have others care for me. The guilt I feel is heavy. I want to take care of HIM. He works all day to come home to me, a messy woman in the depths of pain and despair. He never complains, he only lifts me up. He tells me how beautiful I am, when I haven't showered in days. I don't deserve him but I love him more than anything in this world.

Anyway, moral of the story?

I am able.

I am strong.

I am loved.

I am useful.

I need rest.

I need the help of others.

I need to let others love on me during this period of respite.

I don't need to prove myself to myself.

I don't need to play Super Girl. I don't need to pretend I’m ok when I’m not. Its ok to cry. It’s ok to trust God with my story. [[HE is the one writing it for goodness sake.]] It’s ok to feel. It’s ok to be honest. its ok to just be... if all you did today was breathe...thats ok too.

Are you glad you have individual Health Plan?

I work freelance and I am looking into getting a health care plan. I haven't had medical insurance since elementary school but now that I'm approaching mid 20s, I wanted to prepare for the emergency, the 'just-in-case' situation. My problem is that I have a very negative impression on the insurance business and health care itself. I've gone to health clinic from a floating rib and I paid $300 to be told that I need to get tylenol LOL My relatives and friend went through some misdiagnose, multiple exams and charges. How would my insurance company know this if I don't tell them?

I am getting ready to buy a home (Already selected, move in will be next week) and I own a German Shepard. I am currently shopping for homeowners insurance, and I know that many companies will not insure you if you have an aggressive breed of dog, and the ones that do will give you higher rates because of it. So I was wondering, what reason do I have to tell them that I have an aggressive breed? When they come to inspect the home, my friend down the street can watch my dog for a few hours. If I were to just leave out the fact that I have an aggressive breed so my rates will stay low, how would the insurance company ever be the wiser? PS: This IS a repost. Last time I asked everyone said Well it's misrepresentation and if you have ever have to make a claim, then they can deny you because you lied about the dog. Yes I understand what the consequences would be, that wasn't the question. My question is HOW could they ever find out in the first place? If I have to make a claim for say, a fire, then I could have someone take my dog for a few hours again and make the claim without having any reason to mention the dog? So how would they ever know?""

How does the new 1-50 insurance group rating work?

Ive read that most cars insurance group will more or less double But what I want to know is if 2 cars are group 5 under the old rating and one goes up to 11 and the other only to 7 does that mean the 7 will cost less to insure than the original or will 7 be about the same and 11 be more? sorry if this didnt make sense. 10 points to anybody who can answer?

I'm 23 years old and I live in California. I work full time but only make $8 an hour. My husband is 25 and has been disabled since age 12. He has a serious back injury and may be paralyzed one day and he cannot work. If this ever happens, I really don't want to be $1 million dollars in debt because we are uninsured. I have never bought health insurance before and I have NO IDEA what I am doing.
