For the people who follow me for the occasional Ghost Hunt stuff: I have a thing brewing about how every main adult character (Hosho, Ayako, Madoka and Lin) are meant to represent how being a Weird Adult is so worth it if you can survive being a Weird Kid in an insanely conservative, collectivist society and culture-- with a deep focus on Hosho, Mai and Yasu. If there is any one core theme you can follow through every book and how the characters bond and interact, it's how worth it is to stand out and stick to your guns on it because you will always find other Weird Adults as you grow up and it's the most amazing feeling.

Keyboard Puffer Jacket by Liminal
Mai gets this at a thrift shop as a gift for Lin. She has good intentions, mostly. It's Christmas.
Naru has to go into his office to howl in laughter for the first time in his life.
Lin tries to convince his shiki to destroy it but they're just confused.
Takigawa and Ayako walk in and are wondering if a bird got into Naru's office or something until they see Lin holding the jacket with one hand and making odd waving motions at the air.
Madoka, when texted a picture of the thing by Yasuhara, threatens him with blackmail if he tries to get rid of it.

Ghost Hunt headcanons
Yasuhara loves dramas and soap operas. He gets really into the plot.
Lin is surprisingly good with babies. Even though he wasn't good with the children at the church when they investigated it for Christmas, for some reason babies love him. They always fall asleep on him or stop crying once they see him.
Masako always loved the ballet Swan Lake. When she was little we wanted to take ballet so she could act it out. With her rising fame, she never got the chance.
John is the second youngest of 5. He has 2 older brothers, 1 older sister, and 1 younger sister.
Ayako is a beast at darts. Monk still can't beat her.
Monk prefers coffee over tea.
Mai hasn't had her hair cut professionally since she started living on her own. Michiru cuts it for her.
Naru is somewhere on the spectrum. Not exactly sure where but he is and he also has inattentive ADHD. He self medicates with tea, which is why Mai is always making it.
Madoka has taken it upon herself to try and teach Naru in the art of wooing a woman (namely Mai). From self help books, to advice columns, to blogs and vlogs, she's used them all to absolutely no success and Naru's utter annoyance.
When Luella met Mai for the first time after her and Naru started dating, Luella didn't like her very much. Not to say that she hated the young psychic, but Luella had already lost one son to Japan, she wasn't willing to lose another. She warmed up to the idea after seeing Naru and Mai interact on a case in England.
Once, Yasuhara took John and Monk to a karaoke bar (even though he couldn't drink yet) got the two of them drunk and has video evidence of them singing Piano Man by Billy Joel.
Masako's mother is her manager. Though, she's not really sure she can call her "mother" anymore.
Lin may be a man of fewer words than Naru, but that doesn't stop him from updating Madoka on the soap opera that is the young manager and his younger assistant's budding romance. (romance being used lightly here lol)
Ayako is a closet anime nerd. Not at the Otaku level but she is a casual fan, never talks about it though.
...
Just some headcanons from Ghost Hunt. A lot of these are from my fics Dangerous Souls and The Haunt Continues. What headcanons for these guys do you have?

Also Lin laid out his whole "I hate every single Japanese person" spiel and and Naru went, "that's stupid." and then never ever mentioned it ever again 💀💀

Idk if you guys ever saw the first one I made a while ago, but I recently revisited my Ghost Hunt hyperfixation about two years after the first, and I felt inspired to redo a color job I did on one of the panels for Akumu no Sumi Ie I did a long time ago since I’ve gotten a lot better at digital art since then.
Tumblr media
I’m actually really proud of how it came out :D and I hope you guys like seeing Manga Mai in color just as much as I do :333

A Silent Reflection
A "Ghost Hunt" Oneshot
Tumblr media
He would never admit this out loud of course, but having Mai hanging on his arm like a dependent child warmed Lin’s heart. It reminded him of happier, simpler times: chasing the boys around the manor, shaking his head at their antics, scolding or comforting them if their abilities got out of hand, training them to channel their energy instead of radiating it. Oliver had always been the quiet twin, contemplative to the point of coldness, while Gene had been the free spirit. Gene had always pushed his limits, testing the boundaries of his body in ways Lin was sure gave him grey hairs.
It was little wonder that Gene would be the first to leave the nest, the first to spread his wings and explore the world. Lin winced. He never should have agreed to let Gene out of his sight. Maybe if he had….what? “Stopped Gene? You honestly think you could have?” The voice of his conscience sneered. Lin shook his head. It was an argument he had had many times with himself and there was no use rehashing what he couldn’t control.
He remembered offering his hand in comfort when Oliver had discovered Gene’s fate. Naru had pushed him away, with the same self disgust that filled Lin now. Naru had blamed himself for many of the same reasons Lin did. But it was too late to change anything. So now they searched, searched for the body they might never find. Lin’s shame burned bright. Despite the happy ending of finding Kenji’s hiding place and helping him on his way to the beyond, Lin felt guilty that had nearly destroyed any chance of that by refusing to allow another minor close to him, even if it was simply a charade to keep Kenji from disappearing. Mai’s closeness had hurt, but it was a bittersweet pain with the memories that it brought.
Now Mai ran ahead of them, dancing around in the falling snow. It was Christmas and the case had been solved with a positive outcome. But that satisfaction was only skin deep for Lin. As the others joined Mai in her enjoyment of the holiday, Lin glanced back at the church. The bells began to toll, and Lin closed his eyes. He offered up a prayer for Gene, and prayed that soon they would find him. Lin and Naru deserved that closure at least. So did the Professor and his wife.
“Soon Gene, I promise we will bring you home.”

Random Midnight Ghost Hunt Thoughts
So I said earlier morning yesterday that SPR gang is well-rounded found family, and to further elaborate on that, I’m going to word vomit about how it’s such an awesome group of ghost hunters. Everyone has something to bring into the table:
Bou-san -> Buddhism
Ayako -> Shintoism/Doctor
Masako -> Mediumship/Sort of Shamanism
John -> Catholicism
Lin -> Onmyoudou (or, more aptly, Taoism)
Naru -> Parapsychology/Psychic Researcher
Mai and Yasuhara are like the odd ones out, but Mai can be considered a budding psychic researcher too. Yasuhara isn’t a psychic but he can offer some smart & out-of-the-box opinions, so he can be the objective mediator. The beauty of this found family is that they managed to bridge the gap between different set of religious & paranormal beliefs into a working relationship where everyone’s different skills complement one another. Everyone is given ways for their exorcisms and or abilities to shine. And they all nurtured respect for one another’s skills/beliefs as time goes by.
Naru with his empirical method also helps ground the group in a way that there is balance. He’s there to question people’s perception & beliefs as well as test them and how they hold up. Mai is already perceptive and observant, and she works very well to complement Naru’s different perspectives as well as challenge everyone’s biases with her intuition.
Oh and actually there’s one thing Mai can be a good source of: URBAN LEGENDS. When we were first introduced to Mai, it’s clear she likes horror storytelling & is very good at it. Throughout the series, we can tell that she’s very knowledgeable about horror stories and the occult. It’s a pastime, but with that, it’s also a solid start for psychic research; she already has the curiosity and interest for the paranormal. Adding theoretical knowledge that Naru brings, it’s like an ontological process for her.
Overall, our beloved SPR gang is a jackpot gathering in itself because it’s like a team of geniuses at some point, cracking the hardest paranormal cases in Japan. Just can’t help but further appreciate Ono-sensei’s creativity as well as radical(?) view of having an inter-religious dialogue in the form of characters in a light novel back in the 1980s. Until now, I don’t think there’s ever been a story as accepting of different religious & paranormal beliefs as Ghost Hunt tbh.
And that’s why it lives in my mind rent-free too XD

I know this is the exact inverse of the post I made a little while ago but my cousin informed me that the opposite would also work perfectly and I couldn’t agree more.
So again, here’s my two cents on their relationship.
