I can't believe it! I actually stumbled upon a house with stairs that I posted in my "Stairs That Can Kill You" tag quite some time ago. What are the odds? It's a 1976 mid-century mod in Sioux City, IA. 4bds, 4ba, $489,950.

I would say that it's been redone, but not changed- probably just painted white. It's an unusual home, though, isn't it? So, this would be the formal living room.

There's a small conversation pit in front of the unique fireplace.

This home is certainly on many levels. It's very deceptive when looking at the exterior. I love the beams and stuff. So, up here is the dining room and kitchen.

It's such an open and airy home.

There's a large separate family room with access to the patio.

Room dedicated to a hot tub.

Large primary bedroom and en-suite.

Secondary bedroom is a nice big size.

3rd bedroom.

Bath #2 is nice.

This must be a bedroom that's used as a sewing room.

And, this is also a craft space. Like the wall.

Of course the real estate pics are all jumbled, so it's hard to follow the floor plan, but this is clearly a basement game room.

The Whumps of March 2024: "Skull"

A series of vignettes based on Arthurian legend, collected on AO3 here.

The Maiden of the Cart took out another box. It was made of intricately carved lindenwood, with a gold filigree that seemed to glow even in darkness. She undid the latch, then reached into the plush purple cushions to take out its contents.

It was a human head.

She stared at it, her expression solemn and impassive. This was one of the oldest ones, a dirty skull with no skin attached. A holy person in life, though apparently not so much to have left an uncorruptible corpse.

She put the skull carefully back into its casket, which she closed, and then placed it back onto her cart, along with the 151 others. She had inspected every one, as duty required.

Her load all packed, the Maiden of the Cart set off on the road again. She had to keep moving. Had to keep protecting her charges. The Black Hermit was still in pursuit.

Lindenwood, a new medieval settlement

I'm excited to be starting a new medieval charter challenge since my last one was sacrificed to the Mac file limit gods! Here's some pics from my neighborhood screen. I'm going to put my own twist on things this time around, so here's what I will be changing:

Semi-egalitarian society: For the lower classes (peasants & yeomen), the firstborn* child will be the heir, regardless of sex (*or first-adopted/alienborn, in the case of queer couples).

The upper classes (gentry, nobility, royalty) are still clinging to the vestiges of patriarchy, which means that only the firstborn male can be the heir.

Depending on the family dynamics, some merchants will be egalitarian, while others will be patriarchal.

Elves will follow a matrilineal matriarchy regardless of class.

Major Micromanagement: In the original rules of the challenge, there are certain NPCs that you aren't supposed to play until they marry into a household. Well, I never really liked doing that because I like to play all the sims in my neighborhoods and learn their stories. So, I'm going to be playing all the characters.

Religion: I have the Mac Super Collection, which means I can't use Hat's G-rated Religion mod. But as someone who studies religion for a living, I can't live without it in my game! So instead, I've decided to implement my own religion system. Sims who are "faithful" will be devoted to one of the following deities:

The Watchers: The Watchers are a pantheon of deities that rule over all aspects of life. Humans are their main devotees, and this is the religion that is sanctioned by the monarchy. There are 9 major deities in the pantheon, and most are affiliated with at least one aspiration. Sims who follow The Watchers will choose at least one patron deity and set up an altar for them in their place of residence. In this religion, the first day of each season is a feast day for one or more deities from the pantheon.

The Great Fairy: Fairies (aka plantsims) are devotees of the Great Fairy. As part of their religious practice, fairies tend a garden filled with many fantastical things, such as plants that can reverse aging and heal sickness. Only those whom the Great Fairy deems worthy may enter.

The Old Gods: The Old Gods are an ancient pantheon mainly worshiped by elves. The head of this pantheon is Mother Dragon, the great sky goddess who created the world. Elves believe that exchanging names with those of the Spirit World is dangerous, so The Old Gods do not have names.

So yeah, I'm really excited about this challenge and plan to share pix on here as I progress through it!

Biography:

Exhibit Depicting: Lucy K.R.

Born: North Georgia (United States), Summer of 19XX

Died: Nova Scotia (Canada), Winter of Not Yet

Role: Author, waitress, enthusiast

Eager for a change after a decade of waitressing, Lucy K.R. took the chance in March of 2021 to make her first steps into the world of published work. Prior to the success of Nicht Deine Götter, the largely fabricated German translation of the short-story found in this collection, she was best known for her work on Mageling: Rise of the Ancient Ones and in the second anthology of Duck Prints Press: And Seek (Not) to Alter Me.

She was often seen in the company of what ancient texts describe as “weirdos,” and had a particularly deep connection with an entity known as Tomo, which she appeared to worship. While some historians theorize that Tomo was a type of deity known as a GalPal, newly unearthed records have identified them simply as wives.

Though largely described as a gentle and quiet person in her daily interactions, there can be no doubt that Lucy K. R.’s true legacy lives on in her stories: a legacy of terror, bewilderment, and an enduring love of humanity.

Story Title: The Hollow Mass

“Do you dance?” Sage whirls in a ruffle of fabric.

Under the lanterns, I can see her for the first time. The fullness of her lips, and the sparkle of her dark eyes. Her skin is deep brown under her Spanish-moss lace sleeves, only a shade paler than mine. Her driftwood mask twists together as if the tree grew its branches in that pattern just for her.

“I’ll try?” is all I can give her.

The ground is stable here, and the space is ringed in ragged old trees, twisted and grown as if hundreds of years ago they all turned their backs on this circle and have grown around it ever since.

One of Sage’s arms slips around my waist, drawing me close against her. Our bodies press, our clothes still wet. I fear for a moment that she intends to lead me in some complex step pattern, but instead she just starts… turning.

She holds me, stepping quick and light. She turns us faster and faster snickering as I stumble to keep up. Her arm keeps me on my feet even as we whirl.

He Bears the Cape of Stars Contributor Spotlight: Tevye J. Schmidt

Biography: Tevye has been published as an undergrad while interning at the Linden Gold at Lindenwood University, and also had a fiction piece accepted into the Arrow Rock Literary Journal at the same school. While at Lindenwood he was also invited to present the novella he wrote as his Senior Capstone at the Student Academic Showcase. He hails from northeast Missouri and spent much of his childhood pestering his parents into visiting Six Flags St. Louis, the Arch, and the St. Louis Science Center. He’s passionate about learning and creating, and is currently branching out into writing fiction in his second language, Spanish. Tevye is Jewish, and his works all contain themes inherent to the tenets of his identity and his faith. His goal in future publications is to create science fiction and fantasy that are welcoming to those who exist outside of the dominant culture of Christianity.

“–or you take on the trip to…” the Admiral trailed off, glancing down at the tablet in front of him. “Epsilon 55/G.” His fingers hovered, unmoving, above the tablet’s surface. Aaron met his eyes briefly, and then his gaze skittered away. Admiral Jeffries smiled and pressed down on a button labelled “Assign.” Lightning flashed on cue with the assignment, and then thunder clapped and reverberated through the building. The cool fluorescents overhead flickered off and then, a moment later, the backup lights kicked on. Aaron’s warm-brown skin now appeared a deep red, and Admiral Jeffries smiled wryly. “It’s storm season here.” They both watched the cars speeding through the air past the window as rain began to pour down. The Admiral cleared his throat. “Your orders have been sent. You’ll pick up Dr. Nichols on the Ganymede satellite, just outside Jupiter station.”

WHEN WAS THE HISTORIC DANIEL BOONE HOME BUILT?

One question that gets asked very often here at the Historic Daniel Boone Home at Lindenwood Park is when was the house constructed? This is a very difficult question because there are no official documents as to when it was constructed and it doesn’t appear on any tax records until 1819 when it was assessed a value of $3000.

The following is information from a letter written by William S. Bryan, catalogued in the Missouri Historical Society.

Jonathan Bryan, born in 1759 and died in 1846, was one of the six children of James Bryan, uncle of Rebecca Bryan Boone, who after the death of their mother was reared by Rebecca and Daniel Boone. Jonathan, with his father and two brothers, David and Henry, followed Daniel Boone into Missouri in 1799 and lived the remainder of his life in the Femme Osage Valley where his nearest neighbors were the Boone family.

Elijah Bryan, born in 1799 and died in 1896, the son of Jonathan Bryan, was a young man about twenty-one years old at the time of Daniel Boone's death in 1820, old enough to remember Daniel Boone well and to be able to recount to his son William S. Bryan, many stories and incidents that could have been told only by one very intimate with the Boones as he would have been since he lived about one mile west of the Boone home.

William S. Bryan said that most of his information concerning Daniel Boone was obtained from his father, Elijah Bryan who passed on to his son the stories told to him by his father, Jonathan Bryan.

On August 14, 1934, when William S. Bryan was living in Nevada, Missouri, with a great-niece, he wrote a letter to his friend, Mr. Ben Emmons of, St. Charles, Mo. This letter, now in the files of the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis, gives Mr. Bryan’s answer to the above question.

When was the Boone family stone house in the Femme Osage Valley built? To which William S. Bryan replied:

"Uncle Daniel Boone and his sons and their slaves began to build the stone house in 1803, the same year that my grandfather built his double log cabin, and they finished the stone house in 1810.”

There will always be discussions and debates about the home’s age as more information becomes available over the years. Boone family records cite 1803-1811 as the construction period for the home. But currently there is no answer to why the home does not show up on tax records until 1819. Were the earlier tax records lost or destroyed? Was the home somehow missed by the tax assessor until 1819? As research continues on the home, new evidence may be revealed.
