[Translation]
The scare Linux just gave me.
As reference; if Linux's graphic interface is being weird, go to the command terminal with Ctrl + Alt + F3 o F4 o F5 and use the command: sudo service gdm3 restart
Sudo is temporal (this command) root priviliges (from what I understand)
Service gdm3 is the graphic interface service
Restart just restarts the service
All together: using root priviligies for this command, restart the graphic interface service.
Do not believe just because. Look it up just in case. Nobody wants to repeat the french packet.

System update and all that...
I have the strong feeling that if I don't update from Windows 7 very soon, I'm getting a strong ass malware lol.
Windows 11 is known for pink soup and crashes, but I will still need to install it for uni and work.
Windows 10 is already obsolete, so I don't want to go for that because in a few years I'm going to be in the same situation again.
Linux Mint refuses to dual boot with Windows. I had to unplug its SSD.
Kubuntu does allow dual booting, but SimPE refuses to work on it for me, and I really need it.
I've seen some tech-savvy users recommend Fedora (@brandinotbroke in particular comes to my mind!) but have we got our tools (SimPE etc) to work on it? is it a good distro for Linux beginners, in your opinion?
I could just disconnect my w7 from the internet but I need it for mods and cc making. :(
Tech deities of simblr, what do you recommend for me? What is a distro that I can use well with Sims 2 and its tools, that can still dual boot with Windows?
....... I should also mention that both Mint and Kubuntu caused audio buzzing 😭 if you have tips on that I'll be eternally grateful !!!!!
#....... help. I'm lost 😭#linux simming#xwp talks#genuinely like Mint ran so well from live usb. no buzzing no malfunctioning#as soon as it was installed the buzzing started again#plus it somehow ate the grub menu and I can't boot into Kubuntu anymore.....#I'm too much of a noob for this stuff but I really want to learn

i think the thing thats hard about "easy" linux distributions isnt that they force you into an ecosystem its that they obfuscate learning about the ecosystem so much that you dont actually get the tools to understand how it works or even like, what parts are in it. like when you arent actually at liberty to choose between 2 bluetooth drivers because your os will break if you use the one they didnt test, and learning more about them will at best just make you frustrated that youre stuck on the bad one, then you start to get the feeling that the maintainers made the right choice and everything actually is a limitless dark sea of despair and you should just stay safe in here. but like, that isnt true, choosing between 2 drivers for the same thing just isnt a difficult or high stakes ordeal. even if its a complex topic you only have to learn about it once but like 90% of the time you can look it up and some guy on reddit will have said "if you need x do y, if you dont know what that is do z".
i think id be able to use mint easier now understanding so much more about how "a computer" is split into different components but like, thats not the intended use case for linux mint. its for people who dont want to know that and consider it more bearable to just stew when things break until its miraculously fixed by someone else at some point. i feel like when people say "beginners ONLY start here" they need to be more specific that when they say beginners that's actually what they mean, and not that its easy to learn, because i still had so much trouble figuring out cinnamon and what the fuck a "panel" was, and its not like it helps you with that any more than any other thing. the external resources for getting started with mint arent world class either, if that was the deciding factor people should still just be recommending ubuntu.
i also still feel like its a hill worth dying on that having a separate home partition would actually be huge for noobs especially on point release distros and its so fucked that its some power user thing. oh oops i fucked up my entire system doing an in place upgrade i can just reinstall it. the entire thing. and not lose my data. instead its gotta be a whole thing
#but then also like 'ive got shit to do i want someone else to be in charge of my system' is obviously a real long term use case. and calling#it a beginner thing just makes people confused. the linux 4 noobs and linux subreddits are like full of posts just like 'anyone else STILL#use mint even as a professional computer toucher???' and its like yea...... its a full os its not training wheels. thats not weird

Would it be reasonable to buy a laptop without an operating system and try installing linux as a noob who never even used it? It would be cheaper and i'm wondering if linux would be less annoying etc

boooo ive spent like 3 hours trying to install the drivers for the gd usb wifi adapter :/ it installed just fine on this desktop when it was on windows so it cant be a hardware problem i dont think...and the disk HAS a linux version for installation included!! I literally havent had to go to a tech forum and type a question in So Long. this is So Embarrassing. but we will figure it out 😔
so my sister received a MASSIVE ancient desktop computer from our grandfather and she doesnt want it (tiny apartment. big Old Computer. already has laptop/tablets etc) so she gave it to me. and i had the idea that id install games and blender on it (like, heavier programs) and use my laptop for more work related things and keep it lighter (if i can snag a remote job yk...)
but this Big Old Desktop computer. its on windows 7 which. is NOT compatible with the newest version of blender :( (and all the tutorials i need to follow do use the newest versions...) and like. windows 10/11 would cost money to get a product key for (or more time trying to pirate it than I want to spend honestly) ...and since I already have a working laptop I figure its fine if I use the desktop one to fuck around right? nbd if I do smth wrong bc I can fall back on my laptop or do a system wipe on the desktop. so. going to try LINUX for the first time instead of a windows system :3 very excited bc ive wanted to try it forever. penguine time
#I CANT EVEN PLAY WITH IT UNTIL I GET THE INTERNET SET UP. AUGH!!#i want to play with it. it looks so cool. but the Stupid Drivers *shakes fist*#cool things abt linux so far tho: firefox default browser#cute colors/customizations#cuter cursor/icons#easier way to install programs (THE DRIVER IS THE EXCEPTION AND THE DEVIL)#like it literally had blender as a suggested program. it was Within My Reach. but no internets...to install it...#SAD.#i hope some techheads are nice to me on the forum i am an extreme noob#i dont kno what im doing wrong T_T i dont know the programming language at all#so i dont know if its a fault with me or the dang .sh file.#going to bet im doin smth wrong or skipping a step somewhere. probably#sanchoyorambles#i need a techie bestie to hold my hand. all i can do is html css and a little javascript. just stuff to make webbedsites LOOK cute.#this..functioning codes and terminals...are Frightening Me i wont lie#MY ANXIETY SPIKES SO BAD WITH FORUMS. like what if its smth so DUMB they chase me around with clubs.

hihi! sorry to bog you with noob tech stuff but ive been at this for hours and am going insane,,,
so i’m trying to run resident lover on linux (chromebook terminal if it’s relevant?) and i’ve managed to do the ‘tar xvf’ thing to get it to show me all the files and stuff but idk which file is the executable for ‘/path/to/‘ thing. was wondering if you guys knew anything or if it’s actually just a skill issue on my end. thanks!
Unpack the Resident_Lover-1.1-linux.tar.bz2 file.
Unpack again, the Resident_Lover-1.1-linux.tar file (I have no idea why it's packed like that).
You'll get a folder Resident_Lover-1.1-linux, launch the Resident_Lover.sh file here.

Hello Brandi!!
I wanted to thank you for all your help with Linux! <3
I had complained about strange pink flashes (not pink soup exactly, but more like the whole screen went pink for a quick fraction of second), and I wanted to let you know that it was entirely my fault lol. I had forgotten, lo and behold, to enable DXVK at install 😅😂 I was in a rush that day and didn't check things properly.
Regarding the audio, I gave in and used the monitor jack port instead of hdmi audio. No idea what's wrong with pipewire and hdmi 😭 it really bugs me that I have to use a cable for a software issue, but it works, so I can live with it :)
I'm still on Kubuntu because uni is taking up most of my time rn and I haven't had a chance to try Fedora or an Arch-based distro, but I'm having so much fun, I absolutely want to try them all and maybe switch in the future!
TL;DR thank you, the bugs and glitches are fixed, I was just a noob 😂
Have a good evening!!! 🐧
Aaaaah, I'm glad it works now!
You may wanna rethink the "I want to try them all" though lol (half joking ofc, but I find this graphic impressive so I wanted to share)

Favorite moments from 10x03...
Here we see Detective Alex Eames fragging noobs. Or maybe she's just doing her job. Who can say. I don't know why, but I have the nagging suspicion she's a gamer. Though I'm not sure if she'd be more into the cozy games or the multiplayer shooters like CoD/Battlefield/Counter Strike. But for sure she has a killer rig at home. And knows all the good Linux distros.
Goren: Love this place.
He says, while they're standing in a lingerie store. Yes, he meant because they got information. But I see someone having naughty thoughts. Not naming names. *cough* Eames *cough*
And now for some typical Bobby shenanigans.
I just love when he starts messing with peoples stuff because he found something interesting. And Eames just stepping closer cause she knows what he's doing and has found something and she might need to whip out the cuffs pretty soon.

Hey saw your (awesome) post about WinDirStat, and was wondering if you have any other random/general tech advice for ppl who are just total computer noobs?
-sincerely, a noob.
I'm going to assume that you are using windows cause you are saying you are a noob but don't worry I'll go on my legally required Linux rant in a moment!
Learning a few keyboard shortcuts can help make your life easier. A few of my favorites are:
Windows Key (Win, from now on) + Arrow keys = Move windows arround easily, snap them to the sides and minimize
Win + E = open the file explorer
Win + L = Lock your screen
Win + [any number 1-9] = Open the program that's on the taskbar corresponding to the number you pressed, like this:
Check out that link and look up what might help you use your PC more efficiently!
Another useful tool I really like is Greenshot makes it so that you can take screenshots of specific areas and edit them easily, I used it for the screenshot above!
Now its time for the Linux rant! As a trans woman, programmer and linux user I am legally required to tell you to ditch windows and install any flavor of linux (personally I prefer Fedora) I know switching operating systems can be scary and moving things you've never even heard of when there's a (very low) possibility of bricking your PC. Linux mint is amazing for begginers, I just installed it on my bf's PC and he has been having no issues using it.I will eventually install it as well on my wife's machine because Windows 10 end of life is on october this year. That sounds scary but just means that it will no longer be updated and thus will likely have security issues as the time passes.
Linux is not virus proof (neither is mac! no one's safe) but in general malware is designed to run in windows cause that's what most people use and thus provides the most profit. Just practice common sense when using the internet and don't be clicking on random links provided by strangers. Always question and be curious, you can only learn by asking!
~~ Your friendly neighborhood trans girl

people are starting to follow this blog so
What can you expect on my blog?
I reblog random posts that usually fall on the "STEM topics - gay shit" spectrum
My experience with Linux?
I'm a linux noob. I have been using linux for barely a year and it's ubuntu (I will try didstro hopping soon, I promise). And yes, I switched to linux because the trans girls on reddit told me to.
Why am I Vulkan?
I wanted to pick something graphics related to honor the fact, that I was trying very hard to learn 3D design for like 8+ years (started at 13) but turns out I'm shit at art so I switched to pretending I'm good with computers.
