RDS Data Extraction with RFtap and Wireshark
RDS (Radio Data System) is a communication protocol standard used for embedding small amounts of digital information in traditional FM radio broadcasts. It enables radio stations to transmit data such as station identification, program information, and traffic updates.Â
To capture and decode RDS data, one method involves using a Software Defined Radio (SDR) along with GNU Radio and RFtap. GNU Radio provides a framework for creating software radios, while RFtap acts as a bridge between GNU Radio and conventional network monitoring and packet analysis tools like Wireshark.
Unfortunately, as of the time of writing, RFtap is no longer being maintained and does not work with the latest version of GNU Radio (version 3.10.10). This post offers guidelines for rebuild and using RFtap with the new GNU Radio release.
This post assumes that the reader has access to DVB-T dongles based on the Realtek RTL2832U and a PC running Ubuntu or Debian Linux. For this, I used an RTL dongle with Rafael Micro R820T tuner and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS release.
As the first step install the following GNU Radio build dependencies into the OS:

Next, clone and build Volk (Vector-Optimized Library of Kernels)

After installing the Volk library, we can proceed to build GNU Radio.

Now GNU Radio is installed with all necessary components. To enable RTL SDR support, we must build and install Osmocom RTL SDR libraries and SDR components.

Before plugging in the RTL-SDR dongle, we need to prevent the kernel modules for the RTL-SDR USB device from being loaded into the kernel and taking ownership of the device. To do this, simply navigate to the /etc/modprobe.d directory and create a file called rtl-sdr-blacklist.conf with the following content:

Next, you should clone and build the FM RDS/TMC transceiver module for GNU Radio.

For the next steps, we need to have Wireshark and RFTap. Wireshark can be installed using a package manager.
sudo apt-get install wireshark
To run Wireshark without requiring root user permissions, use the following set of commands:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure wireshark-common sudo usermod -a -G wireshark $USER newgrp wireshark
A message may be prompted in the first step above and proceed by selecting the "Yes" option.
Now restart the OS and continue with the RFTap installation.
The official RFTap repository is no longer being maintained and is not compatible with newer versions of GNU Radio. For this step, please use the RFTap fork available in my GitHub repository. This version has been successfully tested with GNU Radio 3.10.10 and Wireshark 4.2.2.

Now get the modifier version of rds_rx_rftap.grc from the above repository.
The Wireshark Dissector file for RDS data is also available in the repository. Copy it to the ~/.config/wireshark/plugins directory. Create the directories if they do not exist.
Launch Wireshark and monitor the loopback (lo) adapter. Start GNU Radio and execute the rds_rx.grc file, which was downloaded in the above step.

If all the steps are performed correctly, the RDS data should appear in the packet list pane as UDP messages. The dissected messages can be observed through the packet bytes pane.

Owning a sports-team is a plute's get-out-of-tax-free card

When Microsoft CEO (and Linux archnemesis) Steve Ballmer retired and bought the LA Clippers, it was easy to assume that the billionaire was engaged in a jolly, buying a major league sports team as a folly.
But far from it: Ballmer made his bones (and his billions) by cheatingâââlying about free software; secretly funding absurd, crippling, pretextual lawsuits over GNU/Linux; and leading a vast, corrupt monopolyâââand his foray into sports ownership was no different.
As Robert Faturechi, Justin Elliott and Ellis Simani document in yet another blockbuster Propublica Secret IRS Files story, buying the LA Clippers allowed Ballmer to evade $140m in taxes from the sale of Microsoft stock.

Sports teams, it turns out, are not merely billionairesâ playthingsâââtheyâre also a way to launder the earnings of the ultra-rich to reduce their tax liabilities far below the liabilities owed by the minimum wage workers serving pretzels or the millionaire players.
Ballmerâs tax dodge involved ginning up $700m in paper losses for the team by amortizing its assets, including assets that donât depreciate. Itâs part of an old dodge in sports-team ownership, perfected by Cleveland Indians/Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck in the 1940s.
Veeck didnât think that wealthy sports team owners should pay any tax (âLook, we play the Star Spangled Banner before every game. You want us to pay income taxes too?â) and conceived of a âgimmickâ (his word) to make this a reality.
In addition to taking a deduction for his playersâ salaries, he insisted that he could depreciate the value of his playersâ salaries, by acquiring the team and its contracts in two separate transactions. It worked.
As former MLB president Paul Beeston wrote, âUnder generally accepted accounting principles, I could turn a $4 million profit into a $2 million loss and I could get every national accounting firm to agree with me.â
Congress and the IRS eventually caught up with this shuck, but in 2004, one-time sports-team owner GW Bush signed a law reinstating the rule, allowing team-owners to amortize everything from TV and radio contracts to âgoodwill.â
This is how Ballmer was able to pay 12% tax on $656m in income, while athletes pay 30â40% on far more modest sums. Ballmerâs not the only one who got in on this scamâââthereâs a whole all-star team of ultra-rich owners who cash in on it.
This may explain why national sports franchises have increased in value by 500% over the past 20 yearsâââtheyâre not just a way to earn income, theyâre also a way for the ultra-rich to evade taxes.
Propublicaâs reporting didnât stop at Ballmer. They also talk about owners like Leonard Wilf (Minnesota Vikings) and Shahid Khan (Jacksonville Jaguars).
Khan issued a statement in his defense: âIn the case of tax laws, the IRS applies and enforces the regulations, which are absolute. We simply and fully comply with those very IRS regulations.â
This is the same excuse that has been offered since the first Secret IRS Files publication in June: Rich tax evaders donât make the rules, they just follow them. If you donât like the rules, ask Congress for better ones.

This excuseâs flimsiness is obvious: if there are weak tax rules for the super-rich, thatâs not merely because the IRS forgot to close a loophole or Congress didnât pass a lawâââthe super-rich suborn regulators and lawmakers to create rules that operate to their advantage.

This is a part of the tax code that excludes transactions âthat lacks a concrete purpose beyond reduction of tax liability.â The language in the tax code is very broad, and does not define key terms like âtransaction,â âtrade or business,â or âeconomic position.â
On the one hand, this gives the IRS broad latitude to go after pretextual transactions that create risible fictions like the ones deployed by the team owners. On the other hand, the fuzziness of the standard allows deep-pocketed cheats to tie up the IRS in court for years.
The IRSâs budget was gutted in 2010 (in response to the lie that right-wing groups were being charitable status), and has been lagging ever since, with especially deep cuts to its enforcement budget.
The point of the Economic Substance Doctrine is the backstop the rest of the tax-code. Anything as complex as the code will have loopholes, even without rich people doing everything they can to make sure theyâre there.
It functions as a âgiggle testâ that checks tax avoidance strategies that claim (as Peter Thiel did) that stashing $5b tax-free in an IRA is consistent with a retirement vehicle that allows middle-class people to save small sums for their dotage.
Even absent enforcement, the Economic Substance Doctrine is a rebuttal to the argument that ultra-rich tax cheats are just âobeying the law.â The lawâââthe US tax codeâââbans the clever fictions they use to pay lower tax rates than the rest of us.
Sports team ownersâ double-dipping amortization scams are not consistent with the tax codeâââitâs just that the part of the law theyâre breaking is expensive to enforce, and thereâs no budget to do so.

to be honest after playing around a little bit with wifi and doing point to point speed tests between two wireless routers i definitely see where those papers that came out semi recently that are like "people can be detected in a room by looking at signals from a wifi router" got their ideas from, i can significantly affect the internet speed between two routers just by standing in the middle or putting my hands over the antennae.
this is just using a very simple quantitative metric, i def know you can look at wifi signals in even more detail than i did with the ath9k linux driver.. atheros wifi cards are apparently basically narrow band software defined radios. i have no idea if i'm using the term 'narrow band' correctly here, i'm not a radio engineer guy. maybe a better term would be 'limited band' because they can go only somewhat outside of the range of normal wifi signals, into some amateur radio frequencies. some people run civilian mesh networks on that frequency set (info also in above link). also the ath9k driver is very robust and you can do some cool stuff with the robust support the main issue is just that the actual hardware is. not great. like 300mbps maximum according to specs. but for hacking on it's great
