Cursed Dentist

@loveceit well it was cursed from the start and I have no clue what this has become. That’s pretty much expected when giving Remus a dentist surgery though. Apparently it’s Dukexiety though?

“Check up Time!” The yell going through the mind space had half of them working out where to hide.

Roman just donned his armour, pulled his helmet down, readied his sword and glared suspiciously at anything someone could hide behind, reasonable or not.

Patton tried burying himself among the cuddly toys, miscellaneous memories and childhood books that Thomas had kept memories of, ready for reminiscing.

In the hidden areas of the space, Virgil and Deceit started a rather ferocious game of rock paper scissors, glancing towards the door as they picked their options. “One of us better go first and that’s definitely you.” Virgil ground out, glaring.

Deceit just shook his head. “Wouldn’t it reduce your fears to just have it already done?” He tried to coax, but his jaw was clenched to tightly to have the tone as honeyed as it needed to be to work.

In the bathroom attached to his room, Logan was already brushing his teeth for the third time that day when the call rang out. There were few aspects of human society he really accepted being part of their lives as sides of Thomas but dental hygiene was definitely one of them.

Before any yelps or fighting could break out, or Virgil and Deceit could resolve their challenge, he walked past and away from them all, into the darker part of the imagination. Of course as he went through the door he also caught and yanked backwards Remus.

“My check up is now. I’m going first this year.” He quietly insisted, though the creative side still fought to go and find his prey.

“You have too many teeth, Lolo. I’ve told you a hundred times.” Remus was suddenly out of his grip, moving them both instantly to be inside the dentist office he’d made years ago. “Better get to removing them now. Do you want to rope around some slammed in a door, a fist to the face or just yanking them out?”

Logan would have replied but with the change of location he found himself strapped to the dentist chair with a frame holding his lips parted already. At least this year they were just cleaned.

“Yanking them out it is then. Time to get properly knees on.” Remus nodded, as though a real agreement had been reached, grabbing some pliers and literally kneeling on Logan’s chest.

Half an hour and over half his teeth later, Logan was released, quietly gathering up his teeth and hoping it would take Remus a while to find his next client for a dental check up.

Luck must have been on Logan’s side as Remus encountered Roman before any of the others and while he’s never one to actually want to deal with his brothers teeth he did enjoy battling him. At the sight of the heavy plate armour and raised sword he was wielding his morning star and preparing for battle.

Patton had relaxed at the sounds of battle, certain the brothers battle would distract Remus from his seasonal obsession with teeth, but all too soon found two of his front teeth knocked back into his mouth and a hand on his wrist pulling him away from the sanctuary of his room.

“That looks like a nasty gap you’ve got there Patapat. How about some good wolves teeth for your fillings today.” Remus was cheerfully rambling as he pulled them past Roman, now gathering all his teeth from around the room, armour well dented, and helmet broken in two pieces.

Still mostly praying for a way to escape Patton just nodded, “Sure Kiddo. Wolves are good family animals so that could work.” It wasn’t that he liked reducing peoples enthusiasm, but this definitely came from a twisted viewpoint and he never knew what teeth would get changed out. Every year Remus would give him some form of animal canines though.

Logan had already placed all his teeth back in their correct places when he left his room the next time. Seeing Patton’s room devoid of the side and Roman still reaching for teeth that had gotten under the sofa he decided to check what was happening with the rest of the hidden sides.

“Remus will just take one of you regardless of who wins. You do realise that, don’t you?” He asked, interrupting the never concluding games of rock, paper scissors.

Virgil rolled his eyes, turning around. “His promise to all dark, or former dark sides. We can choose who gets dragged away first..”

“Better choose quickly then. It looks like he just needs to finish with Patton before he’s coming for you.” Logan nodded succinctly, removing himself back to his room to avoid having a second check up of the day if Remus saw he had all his teeth once more. That was why he looked after them so much; it’s easier to put well cared for teeth back where they belong than ones poorly looked after. He really did just try to help when pushing his so called dental agenda on Roman.

“Kitten, Snakey, are you ready for your fillings?” Remus crooned, sliding through the door to his imagination just after Patton had hurried past, covering his mouth now.

Virgil frowned at that, standing as he thought the words over. “I thought you just wanted to shape mine, not give me fillings.”

“Ah but shaping can be called a filling by dentists given we have to have a bit of extra material to shape, especially given what you deserve, little Blustery Cloud.” Remus chided gently, now tugging him away as Deceit let his head fall on the desk.

All too soon Virgil was back, his teeth standing a little higher and each one definitely sharpened into fangs now. Deceit however was no longer present, having left only a soft snake toy where he had been sitting.

Sharing a glance Virgil and Remus snickered. “Someone doesn’t have enough teeth and is over due their check up.” Remus called, heading not for Deceit’s room but his own.

Sure enough he emerged a moment later with a pouting and extremely grumpy Deceit over his shoulder. “I’ll even give you lollipops if you behave for your fillings.” Remus was still pretending to coax although he evidently had the control for the moment.

Getting used to, for some Remus forsaken reason, a second row of teeth and larger fangs than he usually had as the serpentine side always took a few days, but took even longer to be able to restore his normal amount of teeth.

It was while Deceit was still trying to do this that everyone ended up relaxing and having a movie night together, light and dark sides included.

As Little Shop of Horrors played and Roman remembered what originally spurred Remus to make his dentist surgery he had one question to ask. “Why always get rid of my teeth?”

“You’re my brother. You aren’t allowed teeth,” Remus just shrugged, momentarily looking like he was about to try knocking all of Roman’s teeth out for the second time that week.

“Then why do I always need teeth taking out and replacing?” Patton looked bewildered at the idea despite having grown used to the dental treatment he always got.

This time the Duke just shook his head. “Your teeth are just completely wrong. You have the wrong teeth. I’ll work out what the right ones are some year, probably. Too human regardless.”

“How can I have too many teeth? Biologically I have precisely the correct amount of teeth for an adult human to have.” Logan queried, summoning a dentistry book that he’d had Thomas read after one of Remus’s earlier dentistry days.

“Too many, your mouth is too full. You just have way too many teeth.” Remus insisted vehemently, eyes gleaming at the other.

Deceit shifted a little, analysing him. “You’re definitely still talking about teeth, but why must you force me to have so many bloody teeth? This is uncomfortable.”

That got a definite frown and almost hurt glare. “Snakey needs more teeth. More teeth are good for you.”

Virgil burst into snickers then. “You know given how anxious I make Thomas over his trips to the dentist you wouldn’t think I have the simplest work done on our trips there.”

“Virgil is just right, practically perfect teeth. I can only improve them a little to make them the best.” Remus nodded, excited and now trying to look at Virgil’s teeth again, reminiscent of the tooth fairy from Rise of the Guardians.

Deceit would always claim the blanket slipped and forced him to push the pair into kissing, but seriously if the self appointed dentist of the mind space thought Virgil’s teeth were just right then they should just get together already.

*Because it was asked for and also because it is Hockey day in America today. Enjoy!*

You grabbed your keys and headed out the door. The address that Carter had sent you was literally down the road so you just decided to walk. It was a nice night for once minus the cold chill that would occur once and awhile. Arriving at the apartment complex you thought about if you really wanted to go to this party. Already inside you headed to the elevators.

It didn’t take you long to locate the apartment considering the whole floor was silent but the one place that had music blaring. You were so glad that you weren’t living in the same place because you wouldn’t be able to handle the loudness. Pulling out your phone you sent Carter a message.

“Hey, I’m here...” you hit send locking your phone. Not even a second later Carter was opening the door. “Hey y/n! come on in.” He said

He grabbed your hand and pulled you inside. There was a bunch of people. Some of them were players and their girlfriends, some of them were single players talking to some random girls. Carter lead you into the kitchen grabbing two cups and then heading towards the balcony. You couldn’t believe that you were here with Carter at a party, his party?

“this is for you...” Carter said handing you the red solo cup, you took it looking at him knowing that he is not 21 and neither were you. He just smiled, it’s not like you haven’t drank before and they were hockey players for crying out loud no one is going to call the cops on them. Taking a big gulp you turned looking out over the city.

“This is Nolan’s place, doesn’t it have such a nice view.” Carter asked looking at the tall building that were lighting the nights sky. “As nice as Philadelphia could be.” you said laughing. You were about to take another drink only to have someone bump into you causing to spill the remains of your drink all over you. Turing around you came face to face with non other than Travis Konecny.

“Jesus Tk.” Carter said looking around for something to wipe up the mess. “Sorry Hartsy, I think i had a little too much to drink.” Travis said “But your aren’t going to stop any time soon...” Carter responded. “Nope, not when your the over time goal scorer.” Travis said headed back into the apartment. “I’m so sorry, Travis can be a little...” “Its okay Carter, I walked anyways so it’s not like theres a chance i’ll get pulled over.” You said trying to dry off your red dress. “Well, I live just a floor above so if you want we can head up and i’ll get you a sweatshirt or something?” Carter said standing up waiting for you to follow. “Sure, thanks Carter.” You said following.

You both were trying to move your way through the bodies in Nolan’s apartment. You were almost to the door when you heard a voice yelling over the music. “THERE YOU GO ROMEO.” Neither of you had to turn your heads to know that it was a drunken Nolan standing not to far away from you both watching you leave.

“The guys get a little, obnoxious when they are drunk. I’m sorry.” Carter said while walking towards the elevator. “Id would expect nothing less. It’s really okay Carter.” You said following him to the elevator. Once inside Carter’s apartment he headed straight for the bedroom looking for clothes for you to change into. You walked towards the big window at the back of his apartment, it overlooked the same things that Nolans but the view was still breath taking.

“it’s not much but at least you won’t smell like beer and you’ll be warm.” Carter said handing you one of his sweatshirts and a pair of his sweatpants. “Thank you, where’s your bathroom?” You asked. “You can just change in my room.” He gestured towards his room with the light still on. It didn’t take you long to get changed. You actually set your dress on his bed looking at where the beer had spilled, you could see the darkness of where it was still wet.

You turned off the light to his room and walked over to where he was on the couch. “Thank you again Carter.” You said. “I’m really sorry about your dress, you looked so pretty, the brown complimented your hair so nicely.” He said. you were about to say thank you but you stop, Brown? You thought to yourself. “You mean red?” you asked carter. “Oh shit, well regardless you still looked beautiful whether or not i could see the color.” Carter said getting up from the couch. You walked him walk to the fridge grabbing out two waters and heading back towards you. “I’m red-green color blind.” Carter said. “So you couldn’t even see your World juniors jersey?” “Nope.” Carter said laughing.

“So, tell me about yourself y/n” Carter stated after taking a sip from the water bottle. “Well, I’ve lived kind of everywhere. the past few years I’ve been here in Philly because of school. You know I just got into the nursing program. I work at the coffee shop, go to class, my last class actually before nursing one’s start. I also work at the local hospital in the PED’s station. I also help to coach the girls lacrosse, indoor and out for this season. Who knows what next season will bring.” You said out of breath.

“Wow, busy bee you are. What about your family?” Carter questioned. “I have two sisters and two brothers, two nephews a niece and another niece on the way. They still live back in California, my parents live in Canada right now, the kinda have two houses, one in California and one in canada.” you said looking at the ground. “What do they do?” “They are both doctors, my one sister is a dentist, the other is a producer she owns her own club in L.A. and both of my brother are lawyers.”

“You make my life sound boring.” Carter said laughing. “Oh stop, you’re a national hockey player, the future of the Philadelphia Flyers for crying out loud.” you said laughing along with him. “So what about you?” You said finally taking a drink from your water. “Well, i play hockey... I’ve wanted to be on the NHL since I was like 5. My parents are back in Canada along with my younger sister. I played for the WHL for the slivertips for a while, um played in the world juniors twice and won gold once. And now I’m here in V’s old apartment.” He said

“See, your life isn’t boring, I would give anything to be able to have played Ice hockey.” you said. “But you’ve played lacrosse, that’s still really cool.” Carter said bumping your shoulder. “Yeah but nothing like Ice Hockey, my family has watched it since i was little. It’s just something that my dad and I had bonded over, my siblings watched it but never had the appeal to them that it does to me. in fact my dad would probably be shitting himself if he knewI was hanging out with you.” You said laughing.

“well, how about you invite your family and a few of your friends if you want to a game, i’ll get you a box seat and then maybe you and your dad or whoever can come down and meet some of the guys. I know that Travis and Nolan wouldn’t mind hanging out for a bit afterwards.” Carter said smiling.

“I couldn’t ask you to do that carter...” “I want to, think of it as a... gift to you for getting into the nursing program.” “Okay, fine. But only if its okay with everyone.” “It’s fine.” carter said. you looked at the time it was almost 2 in the morning, you hadn’t noticed you’ve been talking for hours. “I’ve got to be going, i have work and studying and coaching to do...” “I’ll walk you home.” You grabbed your dress and were about to walk into carter’s room to get changed but Carter stopped you. “Just keep them. i’ve got tons.” He said.

It was a short walk home but you enjoyed every minute you got to spend with carter. You told him he didn’t need to walk you to your door but he insisted. “Message me when you get home?” you asked turning to face carter after unlocking your door. “I will, thanks for coming out tonight.” “Thank you for inviting me.” Carter grabbed your hand, looking at you and then your hand he placed a small kiss onto it. He looked back up again at you with a smile “Goodnight y/n.” “Goodnight Carter.”

You couldn’t stop thinking about him. you went into the bathroom to take off your makeup and to put your hair up. You were in the middle of brushing your teeth when your phone went off. “I’m back home, thank you again for coming to the party. Sorry about Travis and the whole dress thing...”

“Don’t worry about it, i’ll just send you the dry cleaning bill.” you said sending a winking face along with it.

“Deal.”

“I was just kidding Carter, don’t worry about it really.”

“I’ll make it up to you some way some how.” Carter sent back

“You’ve already done enough to make up for a life time. Now get some sleep romeo.” you said

“Alright, goodnight coffee girl.” he sent back.

You were honestly glad that you had sent that reaction to his story, carter is probably one of the best things that has happened to you and you couldn’t wait to see him play in person.

The Enduring Harms of Trump’s Muslim Ban

As the Trump presidency draws to an end, we near the 4-year anniversary of the birth of one of its defining and most damning legacies: the Muslim ban. When Trump implemented his first Muslim ban, the public response was immediate. Crowds of protesters flooded airports in support of Muslims and other impacted communities who were immediately being detained or turned away all over the country. Lawyers and immigrants’ rights organizations nationwide, including the ACLU, filed a series of lawsuits as court after court ruled to block the ban. Despite the backlash, Trump issued new iterations of the ban to circumvent the law and conceal its real purpose, which in his own words was to block Muslims from entering the United States. Ultimately, the Supreme Court allowed the third iteration of the ban to be implemented. The Trump administration then further expanded the ban, explicitly targeting Africans. As a result, people from 13 countries still remain barred from coming to the U.S. Four years after the Muslim ban became a reality, families still remain separated, people are unable to celebrate life events or mourn the loss of loved ones, and dreams are faltering for millions of people worldwide. The stories of Neda, Anwar, Farah, and Haya show us how the Muslim ban has derailed lives and will continue to do so until President-elect Biden rescinds the ban.

Throughout my life, it’s never been easy for an Iranian person to come to the U.S. through the usual channels that a person of any other nationality would be able to go through without hassle. It has always been a super scrutinizing process. The background checks can take up to a year even for a simple visitor visa. I know this process very well, since I have been trying to bring my parents here for almost a decade. My sister and I moved to the U.S. in 2011 for a better life and to join our brother who had moved to the States four years prior. Ten years later, my brother is a dentist, my sister is an architect, and I am an attorney. We have all built lives and families here. My parents have never been able to enjoy our success because they cannot be with us. In 2017, my brother finally became a U.S. citizen, and we were so excited to bring my parents over through a family-based immigration process. By the time we could apply, the Muslim ban went into effect and we had to kind of give up any hope on getting my parents here. At the same time, it was so scary because of the uncertainty about what it meant and how it would affect people. My siblings and I spoke with various attorneys, and nobody knew anything. That was the scariest part, just not knowing how the ban would affect everyone. We decided to try applying for them anyway, hoping that the ACLU and other amazing attorneys would be able to get the ban overturned at the Supreme Court. Four years later, we are still separated because of the Muslim ban. My parents have had to miss so much in our lives. I’ve been with my husband for 8 years and married to him for 2 and my parents have never met him. They have never met my brother’s wife either. They had to attend our weddings and graduations via FaceTime. I know it’s difficult for them, not knowing when or whether they will ever see their children again, but they try not to show it. They’re hopeful that things will change at some point and they’ll be able to come here and meet all these important people in our lives.

I love America and its people. But I wish we would look at Muslims and other people perceived as different as people instead of attaching qualities or preconceived notions to them. It’s very cliche, but that’s the first step in understanding anybody outside your own little bubble. If we’re going to change anything for the better, that’s where it has to come from — trying to understand people who don’t necessarily look like you or have the same religion. What I miss most about my parents is their constant bickering. They are best friends, and cannot be away from one another for more than two seconds. They’ve been married for over 40 years and they never run out of things to talk, laugh, and bicker about. They have set an example that I’ve spent my whole life finding — that friendship in marriage. For the past eight years, my in-laws have been my surrogate parents here, and I can’t wait to put those two sets of parents together and just watch them interact. My parents’ English is not amazing, but I’m sure they can communicate through the language of love. I can’t wait. There are so many places we want to take my parents and so many people we want them to meet. It’s been so long and it feels so unattainable. I get emotional just thinking about it. A few years ago, I was announced a winner in the American immigration lottery. I then began a long and tiring journey to get my visa. The war in Yemen made the process extremely difficult. Many airports and government buildings were closed. In order to get my passport, I had to move as fast as I could through militant-controlled areas to reach the city of Maarib. Along the road, there were checkpoints where soldiers would investigate passengers and verify IDs and travel plans. The journey took more than 16 hours Once we had our passports, my wife and I sold all of our possessions and borrowed money from friends so we could travel to Djibouti because there is no American embassy in Yemen. It was a challenge just to get there. Travelers from Yemen must first go to Egypt or Sudan to get entry visas from an embassy in Cairo or Khartoum. After I finally arrived in Djibouti, I spent six months awaiting my visa. During that time, I lost my job and spent all the money I had saved. I was miserable because I had pledged to repay my friends as soon as I arrived in America. And then I got a rejection letter in the mail. My visa was denied because of the Muslim ban.

I had dreamed that my two young children, Nadra and Mazeen, would get to live away from the war and poverty in Yemen, that they would get an education and build a wonderful future. But we are still living in Yemen, where the state of the country is deteriorating every day. Now, thinking about the future frustrates us. It feels as if our dreams are slipping away, and we fear we may find ourselves unable to educate our children or provide them with food and medicine. Still, we are hopeful that the Muslim ban will be lifted. We trust America, its constitutional institutions, and the justice system. We want the new American government to hear our voices and rescind this ban retroactively so that my lottery visa is not lost. I am optimistic that they will. Coming to America would help me guarantee a safe life for my family and a bright future for my children.

HAYA

I was in high school when President Trump started talking about banning Muslims during his campaign. As a Syrian American, I had become accustomed to the discriminatory immigration system, especially after 9/11. But here was Trump literally saying, I’m going to ban Muslims, live on TV. Just hearing those words was confirmation that people like me and my family are not equal. It felt like violence. The words hurt, but I didn’t think Trump was being serious. I thought it was all for show. Even if he tried to enforce a ban, I was sure that some court would block it. There was just no way I could imagine America enforcing the ban, even though it basically just put onto paper all the discriminatory immigration policies my family had been dealing with since 9/11. So I was horrified when, just a few days after he took office, he made his Muslim ban a reality by signing the executive order. I was a senior in high school at the time — just a few months away from graduating. Because of the Muslim ban, my parents and 14-year-old sister could not get visas, so I had to attend my graduation alone. It was traumatic for me emotionally, to be physically separated from my family at a time like that. And I couldn’t even communicate with them freely because where they live, there’s no freedom of speech. So if I talk about politics on WhatsApp, for example, I could put them in jeopardy. It was just a really bad separation, and I felt it deeply.

I am the only U.S. citizen in my immediate family. My parents came here from Syria to build a better life, one free of oppression. Due to my dad’s job, however, we had to relocate a few years later back to the Middle East. There, I spent much of my childhood living between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, visiting family and friends in Syria for holidays or special occasions. When the war in Syria broke out in 2011, though, that became increasingly difficult. After the Muslim ban became a reality, we felt trapped. We couldn’t return to Syria because of the war. We couldn’t live permanently in Saudi Arabia or the UAE because we are not Saudis or Emiratis. Now we could not go to the U.S. — at least, not as a family. We were stuck. Out of desperation, my parents decided to reach out to distant family members in Canada and see if we could immigrate there as refugees. That’s where we are today. I am currently in university, studying political science. When I first wrote to the ACLU in 2018, I said I couldn’t believe that a country that prides itself on its commitment to freedom and justice would close its doors on refugees and immigrants seeking help. I knew that was not what America was supposed to be. That’s why I am optimistic that the new administration will rescind the Muslim ban and restore hope to families like mine that have been separated for too long. It would be an important first step in reforming racist immigration policies, especially from the post-9/11 era. I dream that one day, the country I was born into will treat me as equal instead of discriminating based on nationality and religion.

I am a member of the Baha’i faith, a religious minority that faces discrimination in my home country of Iran. I immigrated to the U.S. because I wanted to live in a place where I would not be discriminated against because of my name or religious customs. For the past several years, I have worked as a caregiver for elderly patients. When the Muslim ban was announced, I did not think I would be affected because I am a U.S. citizen and I am not Muslim. A few months later, when I applied for a visa to bring my fiancé here, I learned that I was wrong. My application was rejected immediately. I didn’t know it was possible to be treated this way in America. I was used to facing discrimination in Iran, but discrimination feels different when you’re not in your birth country. I’ve now been trying for years to bring my fiancé here. Most recently he had an interview at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul. I was hopeful that this time we would be successful and went to meet him there. But the consulate just gave me a waiver and told me to apply again. I filled out all the paperwork again and still, I am waiting. My fiancé and I were supposed to be married by now and living in America, our new home. Instead, we are stuck in limbo, still separated because of the Muslim ban.

The past few years have been mentally exhausting. Every time immigration officers tell me to do this or that, I have to get a lawyer, I have to do interviews, I have to pay a lot of money. I have friends and family who have gone through much worse because of the Muslim ban. One of my friends had a baby, and her mother could not get here to be by her side for the birth, even though she had a visa. My niece was hospitalized after a car accident and her husband, who was in Iran, was not able to come. A lot of families are separated, with one part here, another part there, unable to reunite during difficult times. At work, a lot of my coworkers know about the problem with my fiancé. They keep asking if there’s news, if he got here yet. And when I say no, they always say sorry. I don’t want to keep hearing the word sorry. I don’t want to be treated differently. I just want to be a citizen like everybody else. It’s my right to live here with my fiancé. I have no choice but to keep trying. I won’t give up. Pit Viper: part one

A/n: this is my first fanfic on Tumblr. (Yay!) I’m so excited. Also I have noticed that there has been a shortage of Eric and peterxoc stories on a little web search thing I did.

And let me just give a shout out to all y'all that do write about them you’re all awesome!

There will be fluff.

And so it begins:

My name is Piper Hayes. My faction of origin is Candor.

My story begins on a cool day, I waited in one of five very long lines in front of our school building. There was ours; Candor the truthful, those who seek truth in favor of lies. and then you had the other four, Abnegation the selfless, Amity the kind (banjo strumming softies.), Erudite the intelligent, and Dauntless the brave. Ever since I was little I dreamed of becoming one of the Dauntless. I used to watch in awe of there bravery and over zealous appearance. Today was the day I find out if my dream will come true.

I stood in line next to my older brother, Peter. He was a jerkface. Plain and simple. I watched as he picked on an abnegation boy asking him where all the food was going, I cleared my throat. I was a girl of few words but when I did talk it was usually to defend people that Peter picked on. “Peter.” I said he was still going at it as I saw a thin faced blonde abnegation girl try to step up to him, another abnegation, presumably her brother pulled her back. “Peter Hayes!” I said fuming when he pushed the boy. My dark brown eyes cutting into his when he finally looked at me. “What do you want runt?” he asked. I shoved him. And he stumbled backwards, almost tripping. “Leave them alone. Rumors are lies.”

He looked down at me anger in his own eyes. “You would know all about lies wouldn’t you, Piper?” I glared at him. “We’ll settle this at home.” I hissed. He kept doing little things to try and rile me up again I ignored him and smiled at the abnegation boy. When my name was called my heart started to race and my palms clammed up. My mouth was dry and I fidgeted with the zipper on my black and white jacket.

“Hayes, Piper.” an abnegation woman called in a passive tone. Their faction Were a bunch of push overs, they were trained to just chill and do what other people told them to do because they weren’t supposed to think of themselves.

I slowly walked into the room she led me to. It was plain with mirrored walls. The only thing that made the room interesting were the dentist’s chair in the center and the computer to the right. The woman was older with graying brown hair that was in a simple bun at the back of her head. She had big brown eyes which seemed familiar somehow, she wore a simple modest crew neck dress with long sleeves. When she turned her back to me I barely caught the very tip of a tattoo, suggesting she was a former Dauntless member. “My name is Natalie Prior, I’ll be in charge of your aptitude test.” she said in a calming voice I nodded as I sat in the chair. She handed me a small glass with a blue liquid in it. The liquid was the aptitude serum. ‘Here it goes.’ I thought as I downed it wincing when it hit the back of my throat.

I open my eyes to find I was in the same room. The only difference in this one was the lack of a computer to my right. I walk around the room looking at myself in the mirrors. Which projected infinitely into themselves. I was an average looking girl, thin with brown eyes an angular face, freckles covering the bridge of my thin nose. My long curly dark brown hair fell just past my shoulders. I normally keep it up with a pen like I had today, my clothes were black and white. Black leggings a white T-shirt and my old beaten Converse. I looked like normal and then my reflection blinks. It was an action so small if I had blinked or looked away, I would have missed it. I looked at her squinting as she says, “choose.” when she speaks it isn’t my voice, this was the voice of an older woman, it was cold and sharp. I looked around, “choose what?” I asked. “Choose.” she pointed to a table. The table held a knife, cheese, and meat. I was indecisive, I could choose a knife but for what? Or the meat. But I am not touching raw, probably contaminated, meat. I guess I took to long because the voice that came from my reflection said, “Time’s up.” the table vanishes and I hear a low growl followed by a vicious bark. I turn around and saw a mangy, rabid dog. ‘I have to stay calm.’ I thought. Humans release chemical pheromones when we’re scared, when faced with a predator the predator can literally smell fear. The pheromone acts as a trigger for the predator to attack. I closed my eyes and got level with the dog. Breathing slowly as I did so to keep my heart rate steady.

What happens next is a miracle. The dog that was only seconds ago planning on eating me for lunch was now a cute pup. I reached out and patted his head calling him a cute pud pud. “Puppy!” I heard a little girl yell. The cute pup turned into the beast and chased after the girl. Without thinking I took off sprinting towards the girl. I grabbed her and used my body as a shield. I was waiting to feel the pain I expected from the dog’s jaws. It never came and I stood up. Dusting myself off. I was on a bus. There was a man at the back, he was frantically asking if anyone knew the man in the picture. He came up to me and asked if I knew him. He was dressed in factionless clothes and wreaked of alcohol and grunge. “Have you seen this man?” I. Shook my head. “Have you seen him before!? Please you could save my life!” my face heated up. “I said no.” he kept on until my fists were clenched and my face was an angry shade of red. “I SAID NO GOD DAMNIT!” I yelled.

I bolted upright in the chair. Sweat dripping off my chin. Taking a deep greedy breath. My breathing was hard almost spastic. “You have to go.” I looked at Natalie. Her face was etched in concern, “what? why? What was my score?” I asked she took a deep breath trying to stay calm. “Dauntless,” I sighed before she finished. “And abnegation and Erudite.” I shook my head. “That’s impossible the test is supposed-” “the test is wrong!” she snapped. “I don’t. Understand.” I said gripping my sides. “They call it divergent, its very dangerous, you have to go right now. I’ll manually enter you in as Candor, you can’t tell anyone about this do you understand?” Natalie looked shaken. “Yes ma'am.” I said as I got up to leave. I decided to get off a stop early and walk home. I liked how busy our sector was, like a hive of black and white bees, all working in unison. All telling each others secrets. I wasn’t going to choose Candor. They are too transparent for me. The are not my faction. As I neared my house I took a moment to take in the natural sunlight and the sky. The way the light refracted off of the glass windows, the warmth and natural light. Those were the only things I was going to miss, my dad wasn’t a priority, he only cared about Peter, because peter ‘never’ lied. My mother was always gone at her job as Jack Chang’s personal secretary. I only saw her in comings and goings and she’d ignore all of us. She only cared about herself. I stayed in my room for most of the night.I sat reading an old book to pass the time. Instead of knocking Peter came in and flopped onto my bed. He and I get along for the most part. Its when he picks on the proverbial little guy. “Hey Pete.” I say as I put my book down. “Are you ready for the ceremony?” he asked. “Honestly, I’m nervous, what was your score?” I asked him. “Dauntless.” I nodded. “I scored Dauntless too.” his head perked up, “no way. I expected you to get Erudite!” he said looking at me to see if I was joking. “You’re serious.” he said in disbelief. I nodded “as a heart attack.” I said smiling. “I’ve heard stories about Dauntless, are you sure you’ll be okay?“ he asked concerned. "Yeah, I’ll be fine. Just gotta get into better shape.” Peter laughed, I was pretending to not Abe able to touch my toes. Truth was I was my brother’s sparing partner so I was in good shape, he practices fighting every day at 10:30 am.

My fiances insurance is OUTRAGEOUS on a truck he has liability only on ..due to his driving history. He's paying $300 a month (for liability ONLY now) ..my insurance on my car, for full coverage is not even a fraction of that a month, even though my cars value is at least $10,000 more than his. My question is can we put his truck in my name and I'll go to an insurance company and get liability only on and list myself as the only driver. We are expecting a baby and I'm sick of us throwing away that much money a month for CAR INSURANCE! Is this illegal? Today I got pulled over for the first time for running a red light , when the officer pulled me over, as he was getting off his bike I took my seatbelt off (I know, now that I think of it, it was such a stupid thing to do, but it was my first time being pulled over and I didnt know how to react). There was a guy in an Audi pulling into a parking spot in reverse in front of me and he was taking half of the lane that I was on.. This parking spot happens to be 10 ft away from the set of lights. In my mind I was thinking, I'm gonna go to the left side to let this guy go in, and while that was happening I was worried about the tourists that like to jaywalk and cross the road inbetween cars... So I go to the left and the left and gas it a little bit, I was going like 10 mph as I was taking off, and the light turns yellow, I cross the crosswalk, then the light turns red and I drive under the set of lights.. These 2 bike cops came immediately after me... So long story short, it was my first time being pulled over, I took the seatbelts off, and I ran the red light because there was a guy pulling into a parking stop right in front of me and I was too worried looking around afraid I was going to hit a jaywalking tourists. I know people always think they're right, but I honestly think I didn't do anything wrong here. I got a $25 seat belt fine and a warning for running the red light, which is complete BS. I know it's a warning but I don't want it on my record at all, how can I appeal, any tips? My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. I was Driving down a road going about 35-40 mph. Now the air bag deployed in my truck, and all of the air bags deployed in her car. My Truck looks like it will probably be totaled the bumper is ruined, the hood is ruined, the headlight is broken, The door I had to practically pry open because it was stuck, Smoke started coming out of the truck headlight broken Paint, I think the radiator broke, etc.... etc... Both Vehicles had to be towed away. I have good insurance on our cars, but since this isn't my fault the other woman's insurance will have to pay my medical bills, and to fix my truck, or give me blue book value on it right? I’ve decided to share some of the shit I’ve had to face since going natural because most people don’t know what the big struggle is about. As ridiculous and funny as it may sound to some, this is truly some sad shit. Some real shit. The shit that comes from trauma. Real trauma…

This past July, I decided on going natural. I had already completely stopped using chemicals that would straighten my hair texture. What I did not realize, however, was that even though I stopped using those chemicals, the hot, hair burning smell blow dries you get from Dominicans in most salones, was just as damaging. After weeks and weeks of research and following many bloggers who spoke about this natural hair revolution, I learned that the only way to go completely “natural” and nurture my curls back to its natural state, as I “thought” I wanted, was to completely stop heat styling as well. Having two different hair textures, half coily, and half straight, after one full year of not relaxing it, made it impossible to rock my bob naturally, without any heat styling whatsoever. It was then when I decided to commit to this journey, all the way. This journey that I didn’t know would forcefully teach me how to love myself. All the way, to me, meant deciding on the big chop, not ONCE considering, 1) The negative comments I was going to receive from many people, especially, my family. Because of course, I only heard the negative ones. 2) The HUGE toll it would take on my ego, my self esteem. And 3) That it would affect me to the point of depression…

I was five when my mom first relaxed my hair, and the trauma I’ve carried because of the way my mom and family made me feel about my hair, was EXACTLY the way I felt when I looked in the mirror. And this was what I saw…

I remembered all the times I was told that I had “pelo malo” and the looks I received and the mean talk that went on about me on a constant basis. I was seven when my mom took me to the salon and told the stylist to cut ALL of my hair, leaving me with about an inch of hair. She didn’t want the commitment it took to relax my hair every time my roots grew out. She also, did not want the commitment it took to wash and style my hair when it was natural because of the thickness, the fullness and the knots.

An excerpt from an old essay:

“Tú tienes demasiado pelo y no tengo tiempo para bregar con tu pajón.” I sat in the salón chair; a rollercoaster of emotions overwhelmed me, but I was too scared to beg her not to do it.

I can’t believe mommy is doing this to me! What will everyone at school say and think of me? How could I ever face them?

With tears and snot streaming down my face, I agonized as the peluquera sadly chopped all of my hair section by section. The closer she got to my scalp, the uglier I felt and the more I wanted to die. I could see the remorse in the peluquera’s eyes, but not in my moms. I lost a part of me that day.

Sadly, the only way I felt pretty was with straight and long hair. Because that’s what was said to me as a child.

I will never forget the day I left the salon on Broadway after my big chop, I got in my car and drove to the bank on Dyckman. What I had just done, still hadn’t hit me, and I didn’t know I wasn’t ready to face the world. I waited for someone to leave from a spot directly in front of the bank and parked my car, pulled out my debit card from my wallet and a quarter to pay the meter. It was that dreadful day, in that exact moment when it dawned on me. I have a short fro and I am going out of my car, not only in public, but in the neighborhood I grew up in. The neighborhood where EVERYONE has always seen me with beautiful straight and always, done hair. What are they going to think of me? I took pride in getting my hair done every single week, even in the hot summer days because THAT’S what I was taught to do growing up in a culture where our hair is EVERYTHING. Literally. I turned my car back on and drove away, NEVER daring to walk out. I drove myself straight home to agonize in front of the mirror wondering what the HELL was I thinking to do such a thing. For weeks I didn’t leave my house. For weeks I would drop off and pick up my son wearing a cap because of the shame I felt. Shame that consumed every part of my psyche; every part of my existence. About a month later, sadly, wonderful friends of mine lost their son, and all I could do was be there for them every step of the way. I was hurt and deeply consumed from such a tragedy. I was devastated, but still, couldn’t help but wonder what would people would think of me, especially knowing I would see people I hadn’t seen in years. People that last they saw me, I had my beautiful, shiny and straight hair. I had so much anxiety, I wanted to hide myself from everyone at the funeral. I struggled that day and the next. A LOT.

A few weeks later, I lost an uncle. I feel shame in saying this, but I was more devastated about having to face my family at my uncle’s funeral, than I was of his passing. I loved my uncle dearly, in fact, he was my favorite, but this only revealed to me the impact their judgments still had on me, and I contemplated not attending several times. I was finally convinced by a cousin that because I didn’t see him while he was in the hospital, it would be very fucked up of me not to show up and pay my respects, and so I went. “That’s your mothers brother Carmen”, she said. I won’t write about the list of crap my family spoke of me that day, because today, it is irrelevant. And because today, I don’t feel as I did yesterday. Because although I went through very devastating times, I am learning to love myself a bit more with each passing day. Not because of all the beautiful comments I hear these days about my hair by most people, or because my husband finds me more beautiful than ever because my face is completely exposed, but because I am learning to love myself. My entire life I faked being comfortable under my skin, and boy, did I fake it good! When in reality I had very low self-esteem and I never saw the beauty people saw in me physically. Ever. This journey has brought me a long way nonetheless, and I will share with you a funny story.

Last Thursday I went to visit my mother. I had not been there longer than an hour when she told me, “Ay mija, pero vete para el salón. Ese pelo si esta feo. No importa como tu te vista porque ese pelo no luce con nada de lo que te pones.” I was assuming she made this remark because she saw my birthday pictures on FaceBook from previous weeks and thought my hair made every part of me look ugly. It bothered me, but I ignored her comment. Of course, it didn’t end there. About a half hour later, she repeated to me how ugly my hair looked and pursued on repeating it several more times for the almost entire four hours I was there. And if that wasn’t enough, when my younger brother came home with a friend that day to eat dinner at my moms, he also, mentioned how ugly my hair looked about 30 minutes upon his arrival. Yes, that hurt. And yes, I had a very hard time being around his friend whom I’d just met. And yes, I wondered if he, also, thought I looked ugly. And yes, in that moment, I wished my hair was the way my mom and brother remembered it; beautiful and done. I brushed it off and not once made a comment about how that made me feel. I was happy to be with my family whom I don’t see much of, and MY HAIR was not who I went there to be with; not who I went there to see. And after going through those emotions that months before would’ve brought me to tears, I decided, I wasn’t going to allow it to affect me ANYMORE.

And I’ll end with this, an even funnier story:

The following day, since I had a dentist appointment in Washington Heights, I agreed to pick up some stuff for my mom at her favorite pharmacy. After seeing my dentist, I called my mom to tell her I was on my way to pick up what she had asked me to, and these were her EXACT words. “Pero mija, te arreglaste ese pelo feo?” "No mami, no me lo arregle”, I replied. “I’m only asking if you did your hair because I have shown them so many beautiful pictures of you, and I would hate for them to see you looking the way you did yesterday,” my mother said. “Don’t worry mom, I have a hat on today”, I said. I have been laughing ever since. And NOT crying!
