Mike chews the inside of his cheek as he drives down the long stretch of empty road back towards the Schmidt house, it’s far too quiet in the car, and while the car is usually a little quieter without Abby in the backseat, this is almost eerie. They’re driving forty minutes home from the hotel Abby is staying with Ness at- he’s become a trusted babysitter and had offered to take the girl to an upcoming convention for some show they both watch - Mike honestly doesn’t know how a nine year old and a twenty something year old waiter can be this excited about the same show but he was happy to get the alone time with Vanessa.

After everything that’s happened it’s been hard to find time for just them, Mike’s working a new job, Vanessa’s been doing double time since getting out of the hospital, they’ve all been going to therapy- life has been busy. Thankfully much more settled, but some time for tlc is always appreciated, and the longer this car ride goes on the more Mike thinks Vanessa really needs it.

She’s been shifting in her seat every five seconds with a twisted up look on her face as though she can’t get comfortable and her eyes have been looking anywhere but at Mike. It’s worrying him to the point he contemplates pulling over to figure out what’s wrong- but he’ll hold off and start with just asking, trying to remind himself that jumping to conclusions only leads to him getting anxious which is the last thing he needs if Vanessa’s already having a bad time.

“Nessa? You okay?” He drops his voice soft and caring, glancing at the blonde girl only to be turned away from.

“I’m fine.” The response is quick and pitchy, almost nervous sounding, she’s chewing on her thumb nail and staring out the window like she’s never seen anything more interesting in the whole world.

“Are you….feeling small?” Mike hesitates as he asks it. While he’s always eager to take care of Vanessa when she’s little and he loves to be able to help her heal from her horrid childhood; he knows Vanessa isn’t always keen on going small or even admitting she may need to/already is.

“I’m sorry…” The girl mumbles back and Mike swears his heart shatters to nothing. Screw it- he’s pulling over.

“Mike? What are you doing?” A surprised squeak leaves Vanessa when Mike swerves over to the side of the road, a little more chaotically than he thought it’d be.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. But, Nessa, you don’t have to apologize for going small.” A saddened look falls to Vanessa’s face as Mike turns in his seat to face her, reaching to take her hand carefully.

“We’re supposed to be having a romantic night to ourselves, not-.” Her eye flick away from Mike, a wetness to her lashes and her teeth dug into her bottom lip as if she’s keeping back sobs.

They have reservations for a nicer restaurant that’s a few towns over, Mike ironed his dress shirt before they left and he knows Vanessa was going to wear one of her dresses, but none of that is more important than her being comfortable. Not to Mike anyways.

“That’s not true, we’re having a night to ourselves, romantic or not. We could go home and clean the entire house if we wanted to, or drive around until I run out of gas, or hell- we could go running through the woods in the pitch black if we really wanted to. The only thing that matters is that we’re together, okay?”

“And I’d hate to miss a chance to see my best girl.” Mike moves his free hand to brush his thumb against Vanessa’s cheek, smiling when she blushes and giggles at the touch. The nickname ‘best girl’ started after Abby realized Vanessa didn’t have a version of her own nickname ‘sweet girl’ that Mike’s been calling her since she was still a baby.

“You sure? Don’t wanna ruin the night.”

“You’d never ruin the night, ever.”

Eventually the two make it home in much better spirits, Vanessa had started to sing along to the radio loudly while Mike was driving and she’s still humming as she bounces up the walkway to the front door. Mike’s more than relieved that Vanessa seems to be enjoying her regression, he always hates to see when she’s upset and small, it’s a different type of hurt.

“What do you want for dinner? We just went shopping so we still have options.” A grin breaks over Mikes lips when Vanessa comes to wrap around his waist where he’s bent to look into the fridge. There’s still leftovers from last nights dinner but there’s still plenty of fresh ingredients for Mikes to cook something new.

“Pizza!”

“Pizza? That’s the one thing I can’t make!” Vanessa giggles as Mike comes to scoop her into his arms, placing her on his hip with a playful squint when she pokes at his nose with her pointer finger.

“Pizza. With pepperoni.” He pretends to think it over for a moment- they both know he’ll cave- but he still likes to watch Vanessa’s eyes go big and puppy dog like as she waits.

“Okay, okay, enough with the eyes. We can get pizza.” Both Vanessa and Abby know giving Mike puppy dog eyes will get them just about anything they want, and judging by the smug smile on Vanessa’s face she definitely knew it’d work with this.

“With pepperoni.”

“With pepperoni.” He confirms with a kiss to the side of Vanessa’s head.

A night of pizza and cartoons honestly sounds better than going to some fancy restaurant where he’d have to wear uncomfortable clothes and eat overpriced food while pretending he didn’t feel completely out of place in the restaurant. Holding Vanessa to his chest as she steadily chews on her hoodie strings is also better than seeing her wearing a tight dress - which she looks absolutely stunning in- but he knows bothers her with how stiff it is. They don’t need some expensive dinner or anything like that, they just need each other.

I do actually!! She's been on my mind a lot recently, so here's what I have for her :D

(I'm probably going to include some of my other headcanons just because I feel like they fit here as well if that's okay!)

Baby Regressor! Vanessa

She's not quite sure what her age range is, though she does know it's pretty small. Mainly because it's before she can remember all the things that happened with her family, so with being pretty young at that state, it's between 0-3.

Very independent, "I can do it myself !!" I feel like she wouldn't really care about having a caregiver, like it's not something she thinks she needs, but won't say no if it happens.

Because of that, she has trouble letting her guard down around others when she's regressed (mainly Mike). Feeling that vulnerable around someone else reminds her of when she was a kid, so it's hard for her to trust that he won't do anything to her.

Dealing with the trauma of everything is hard on someone that's as small as she is. Her brain doesn't know how to process it all and it takes a toll on her both mentally and emotionally. Sometimes she just cries and doesn't know why, but aside from that, she's not really an explosive or overly emotional kid. Mainly a little bit more sensitive than anything.

Is a little nervous when it comes to him acting like a sort of parental/brother figure towards her. She hasn't experienced that in a long time and ever since she's worried it would turn out just like her relationship with her father. That she'll be rejected, taken advantage of, or forced to "grow up."

Mike, being the ever-patient guy he is, wishes he could get rid of those feelings for her. He'd never hurt Vanessa and despite how much she questions it, he still reassures her that he won't.

Will tag along with him anytime she can. He's pretty much the one person she trusts with this and will take up any chance to be around him. Since she's content to pretty much sit and sleep or watch, he doesn't mind.

He also gets much more protective over her when she's little. It could be something as small as seeing a bug in the house or crossing the street, but whatever it is, he's making sure she's alright. That's his baby and though he's still figuring it out, he'll do anything for her.

Very tired kiddo, but hates sleeping alone. She spends most nights (if they aren't with each other) on the phone with Mike or falling asleep together (which happens more often than the former.) And he, having a similar problem, is cool with it either way.

Has a plush bunny (and later on, all the other animatronics) that she keeps with her at all times. It's small enough to fit in her pocket, so she can bring it in to work whenever she's having a rough day.

While her skills aren't as good as they normally are, she still loves to draw with Abby when she feels old enough to. Most of the time they're just scribbles and she's proud of it either way.

S O many forts. It's not even funny. They're her favorite spot to be in and there's no stopping her and Abby from building them.

Speaking of which, it was difficult in the first place to tell Mike about her regression, and it was even more so when it came to Abby. She was a kid and Vanessa didn't expect her to understand it, plus she worried that it would freak her out. They didn't exactly say it was that, but they pretty much put in a way that made sense to Abby. And she didn't mind, she was actually happy to have someone to play with, even if it wasn't someone exactly her age.

She never had a ton of pet names growing up, so Mike takes advantage of that. Mainly variations of her name like "Nessa", and he calls her ones he finds silly or funny. Like "Peanut" or "Munchkin." He does have a favorite though and ends up calling her "Little Lady" most often.

Much more comfortable with PDA/touching in general when she's little. Even if it's just small, subtle things like holding each other's pinkies or holding hands. It helps her feel safer to know that someone else is there like "Hey, I got you." And it helps both her and Mike open up more to each other by doing it.

hc that little vanessa actually was friends with the animatronics and when william was up to his bs late at night she’d make forts with them out of blankets and such and read them stories. they’re kids so it makes them happy :,)

i just noticed that max and vanessa are both nice women who were pressured by their family to do things that were wrong that they clearly weren’t comfortable with but when push came to shove max went along with it and vanessa stood up for what was right. and they both suffered either way.

Little Vanessa x Caregiver Mike headcanons

warnings: spoilers for the movie, talk of mike & vanessa’s bad childhoods, talk of canon violence/events

It’s such a healing experience for both of them

Mike can get insecure about his caring abilities when it comes to Abby and having Vanessa choose to be taken care of by him is really important to him — then obviously Vanessa had a not so great childhood where she never felt like she could trust people/get close to them so having Mike be a constant in her life is big for her

Vanessa practically lives at the Schmidt house for a while after she gets out of the hospital before Mike just asks her to move in fully

they take Abby to the diner every Sunday for breakfast and Vanessa & Abby have “draw offs” where Mike tells them to draw the same thing for him to then judge and choose a winner — spoiler: it’s always a tie

both the girls love it and sometimes ask Ness to judge their pictures but he tells them it’s a tie too

Vanessa finds legitimately every and any excuse to be carried by Mike, he pretends to hate it but secretly loves being able to have her cling to him

Abby clocked Vanessa as a regressor before Mike or Vanessa realized, hence her dragging Vanessa into all her games and to go play with her any chance she could get

Mike packs her lunches everyday for when she’s at work — he always leaves little notes with drawings on them

the Schmidt fridge is perpetually covered in drawings between Vanessa & Abby

Mike always holds Vanessa’s hand when they’re in public

he’s so protective over her and makes it extremely obvious — and yes she’s a police officer with a gun but that is his baby and he will go full William Afton on someones ass if they try to hurt Vanessa

when Mike gets another job after everything he chooses something without night shifts so he can be home when Vanessa gets home from work

almost every morning is Vanessa & Abby waking Mike up by slamming pillows in his face/jumping on his bed full force — or they try to make breakfast by themselves and something crashes because Vanessa’s too regressed to be cooking and Abby’s just giggling along cause she lives for the chaos

Abby & Vanessa are soooo chaos together Mike swears they’d burn the house down if left unattended for too long

but on the flip side, things can be really chilled out if any of them need time to decompress

after everything, everyone in the house gets nightmares but Vanessa’s are definitely the worst — she has all the added trauma of how she grew up being directly connected to what happened and it takes a toll on her

Mike is sure to hold her extra tight after a nightmare and they spend a lot of nights wrapped up on the couch together with cartoons going til Vanessa eventually falls back asleep and Mike can carry her back to bed (assuming he didn’t fall asleep too)

Vanessa’s very pda heavy in general but when she’s little she’s almost always touching Mike in some way

she likes to lean back against his legs while sitting on the floor drawing while he’s on the couch

Mike calls her “sweetheart” a lot, there’s others he uses but sweetheart is his favorite

Mike gets specialty stuffed animals made to look like the animatronics because while Vanessa hates to think about what happened when she’s little, she misses her friends — he also gets a set made for Abby but her & Vanessa have to come up with different names so they can tell whose are whose apart *wink wink nudge nudge the different versions of the animatronics from the other games having similar yet different names

the amount of blanket forts that are built in the house is impressive — seriously it’s almost daily that Abby & Vanessa are getting Mike to build a new one in a new spot in the house

Ohh yay!! I loved Vanessa, so I actually do have some! These are kind of what I think she'd be like:

Regresses between 4-9, I think she'd kind of be in the period where you're not really a little kid, but not a teenager either?

"I've looked everywhere, and I still don't know where she is. Where'd you go, kid? " "Oh! There you are! C'mon now don't scare me like that! I thought I'd lost you, silly.

Loves building forts even more when she's regressed. They're pretty much her safe space and refuses to leave unless she has to

Was very nervous to bring it up with Mike. She's seen how he much he cares about Abby, and worried that taking care of her as well would be too much extra work to deal with. When he didn't respond back and just pulled her into a hug, she almost cried. She was relieved when she didn't though, instead being more shocked than anything else.

"Wait, so you don't...care? You don't think it's too weird...?" "Vanessa, you know me better than that. Of course not! Believe me, if I can fight off giant murder robots AND make sure Abby's not as screwed up as I am, I think I can deal with something like that. Honestly, I doubt it won't be anything I haven't seen before, so no, I don't care."
