Do Don't
Tumblr media
It is clearly an expression or song lyric, even as I was not familiar with it. Given this is from the writer Frank Doyle -- who casually dropped lines from his listening list in his stories -- my quick guess is "Frank Sinatra!" -- and sure enough, Frank Sinatra covered the song. But this correction of the word "don't" becomes ever more interesting because -- a story from the next calendar year later and uncorrected with a reprinting within two years of the other reprint --
Tumblr media
Haphazard slightly ad hoc editing, not knowing it is correct one day, and is the other day? Conscious or Unconscious bias and fear of leaving the Black character speak a broken English that is allowed with the White character? One staff member knows the song or senses it there and the other doesn't?
"Little Green Apples" is a song written by Bobby Russell that became a hit for three different artists, with their three separate releases, in 1968. Originally written for and released by American recording artist Roger Miller, "Little Green Apples" was also released as a single by American recording artists Patti Page and O. C. Smith that same year. Miller's version became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and on the UK Singles Chart (and a #6 hit on the Billboard Country chart), while Page's version became her last Hot 100 entry and Smith's version became a #2 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The song earned Russell a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and for Best Country Song. In 2013, "Little Green Apples" was covered by English recording artist Robbie Williams featuring American recording artist Kelly Clarkson, which became a top 40 hit in Mexico.
But the lyrics lead to a conundrum. Someone transposed it wrong somewhere.
And if that's not lovin' me (lovin' me) Then all I've gotta say (gotta say) Is God didn't make little green apples And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the Summertime.
And the other line of note.
And if that's not lovin' me (lovin' me) Then all I've gotta say (gotta say) Is God didn't make little green apples And it don't snow in Minneapolis when the winter comes.
It is still "Don't", though. The corrected Chuck Clayton becomes like Pat Boone singing "Isn't it a Shame?" for the benefits of proper English.

Song Of The Day - Feb 2nd '23
Little Green Apples - Roger Miller
I wasn't always a country fan, but over the years I've come to realize just how much country music means to me. I listen to my country playlist daily. It reminds me of my childhood: listening to the bluegrass band at my church picnic play Wagon Wheel, smelling my great grandmother's cooking in her beautiful little house in Roanoke Rapids N.C., and the constant Cracker Barrel stops on the way to the beach, also in North Carolina (my family spends a lot of time in North Carolina). While I only discovered Roger Miller last year, I had been listening to him my whole life. One of my family's favorite movies growing up was Disney's Robin Hood. You know, the one with the foxes? Roger Miller played the rooster. Little Green Apples came later in my life, but Roger Miller has been here the whole time.
There are several versions of Little Green Apples, all recorded in the same year, but to me, Roger Miller's is the best. It's a simple, gentle song of a man and his wife and their sweet, domestic love. It's a tale of the little things in life, those moments where you wouldn't expect love to blossom, but it blooms there all the same. Miller sings of hectic moments at the breakfast table, of spontaneous lunches, and how in these moments, the woman he sings of shows little bits of affection that prove her love. Miller's baritone and a soft acoustic guitar fall hand in hand with the tender lyrics. To the singer, if those moments don't prove her love, "God didn't make the little green apples/And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime". If those moments don't show her love, then everything in the world is a lie. The world turns upside down if that love doesn't exist. This song is springtime in a singular melody.
This song reminds me of visiting my grandparents' homes in North Carolina. I think about my Grandma Sarah's house in Charlotte with all of the salt and pepper shakers that she collected. I think about the Gardenia bushes in the backyard and the bathroom with the floral wallpaper. I think about my Granny's house in Valdosta, with it's big pecan tree, upright piano, separate laundry room, and my aunts and uncles smoking Marlboro 100s and shootin' the shit under the carport. But most of all, I think of my Great Granny's house in Roanoke Rapids. That little two bedroom house with the swirled ceiling in the parlor. The living room was lower than the rest of the house because it used to be the porch. The concrete walkway outside that hurt to walk on barefoot that my great grandmother laid by hand. I think about that house often. Every time I listen to Little Green Apples, I think of summer in the south, and I am happy.

the stray catboy kylar i had on the brain earlier
TW: catboy kylar, classic yandere stuff
You run into him on the street as he’s chased out of a store for stealing some fish.
You take pity on him and hide him from the disgruntled shop owner, which he is so grateful for, he offers you the fish he just pinched.
One look at him reveals just how skinny and mistreated he is. He’s practically skin and bones with a shaggy black tail swaying behind him and scarred ears covered in dust and grime. His oversized hoodie and his ragged sweatpants have holes which show his scratched up hands and legs. All in all, he looks miserable, and this, along with the ironic puppy eyes he gives you is enough to convince you to shelter him, I mean, the poor thing obviously needs it!
Kylar visibly brightens up at the idea of coming home with you, and follows you while gripping at the back of your shirt, grinning the whole way back. The pep in his step is somewhat dialed down when you demand he take a bath straight away. He very reluctantly agrees (though not without a fair share of pouting), and goes to undress in the bathroom. Imagine his surprise when you step in after him, but before he can happily tear your clothes off, you step back and explain that you’re here to help him should he need assistance bathing or figuring out how your bathtub works (also to make sure he actually uses soap and doesn’t lick himself.)
You try to keep your eyes off him while he washes to preserve his modesty, despite his best efforts to make you look, but he does seem very helpless and keeps asking if you could please lend him a hand. Your resolve breaks, and you sigh, agreeing to help him with the shampooing, at the very least. As soon as the very tips of your fingers brush against his scalp, the poor kitty is purring up a storm, leaning up into your touch, eyes closed in relaxation. You fuss over his hair, making sure every little strand is thoroughly coated in the apple scented shampoo, and take extra care around his seemingly sensitive ears, though you can’t help but play with them a little, as they’re actually quite fluffy! Kylar seems to appreciate this, but you’re not really able to tell, from the little hums he makes through the hand he has stapled to his mouth. You have to snap him out of whatever trance he put himself under, because he’s started to bleed from biting himself so hard ! It does however give you an opportunity to examine his previously hidden fangs, and they look incredibly sharp at first glance.
After he’s clean from top to bottom (and after his hand is bandaged, really what was he thinking), you lend him some clothes, decidedly not looking when he buries his nose into the shirt’s collar, maybe he just missed having clean and warm clothes, and set about cooking the fish he stole brought you. Kylar’s already wide smile gets even wider when he sees what you’re making (he’s so happy to provide for you, he’ll get you so much more if it makes you happy !), and he devours it while praising your cooking as though it was ambrosia. You finish eating and start getting ready for bed, getting some blankets and pillows for Kylar to sleep on the living room couch. You say goodnight and lie down in your bed, letting sleep overtake you. Some time later, you wake up, feeling a strange weight pressing down on you. Alarmed, you sit up and take in the sight of Kylar, sitting on your bed, eyes wide open in surprise and guilt and hand frozen in mid air, as if stunned to see you awake.
“... Kylar?” He lets out a squeal, too nervous to even think about speaking.
“Did…did you have trouble sleeping ?” He nods vigorously, amazed and grateful at the ready-made excuse you just provided him with.
“Yeah, I… I had a nightmare… Can I sleep with you tonight ? Please ?”
You agree and Kylar instantly burrows himself into your blankets next to you, barely looking at you for approval before he wraps his arms and tail around you. He thanks you profusely, and rambles on about how he’s so relieved he met you and you took him in, and he knew you’d be so nice and perfect... You barely catch the part about him staring through your windows every night to make sure you were safe, and drift off to sleep with Kylar in your arms…
(That's all I had for today, but hey, maybe I'll make a part two at some point!)
