howdy!!!! for the WIP excerpt ask game: 🗣 Share your favorite dialogue exchange. & 👤 Share a line that shows a character’s personality. <3 - @liv-is
hi, Liv!
i'm apparently incapable of sharing just a line or two today, so i'll leave the answers under the cut. they're both from The Art of Empty Space:
🗣 (i've definitely posted this bit before, but i love it so here it is again):
Lienzo scooped his bag from the floor and brushed past the beast, carving a path down the rightmost hallway. "Well, since that's settled, why don't we see about supper? I, for one, am famished; you do eat, I assume?" His last meal had been the half-stale chunk of bread he'd eaten an hour before reaching Iskin Forest the evening before; even if the dracolisks didn't catch him, he surely would have collapsed from hunger somewhere on the road to Minadore. "I... erm..." The beast, after a moment of shuffling in place, fell into step beside Lienzo. "...Yes?" "Oh, come now, I know you can do better than 'yes.' I know you've plenty of food in that kitchen — what do you like? Do you hunt?" Gods knew the beast was no trapper. "I... don't hunt? I don't eat meat." "You don't—?" Lienzo stopped short and squinted up at the beast. "With those teeth?" An odd, scoffing snort escaped it. "You're one to talk about teeth." It flinched and froze in place. Shoulders hunched, it looked away and bowed its head, as though it wished to pull its cloak up and disappear. It was all Lienzo could do not to burst out laughing. A monster, cowed as though it'd just mouthed off to its parent? "You're damn right, I am." He smiled, didn't bother trying to hide his teeth. "Uniquely qualified, you might say." The beast uncurled and, after a moment, offered an uncertain smile in return.
👤 :
Lienzo breathed, forced himself to hold it, and let it out again. Aaro wanted to help. She did. Just because she didn't understand why handouts weren't helpful— "If you want to help me," he said, his voice shaking with forced calm, "you will buy the last things I have of any value." His tongue flicked out, wet his lips. Don't say it. Don't say it. Whatever he did, he couldn't— "We're family. Right?"
Aaro's shoulders slumped. She dragged her hand over her face. When she looked at him again, her eyes were older than the gnarled wood of her countertop.
Lienzo had won.
Bile rose in his throat, burned the backs of his eyes. He'd won, and he was the foulest piece of shit to ever walk the planet.
Thanks for the ask! 💜

Happy STS! 💜💌 What role does symbolism play in your WIPs, if any? What symbols relate to certain characters, events, or emotions? How do you decide what symbols to use, or what these symbols mean? Are they intentional, or do you notice them after they've appeared in the story? :) - @liv-is
Happy Storytelling Saturday, and thank you for sending @liv-is!
There is some symbolism developing as I type up my draft, but it's not super set in stone yet! I often find I don't add symbolism much on purpose, but if I notice them while developing the story, then I definitely might start to play off of that!
I'm having a good time flipping around the whole light vs dark thing. The night symbolizes sanctuary, home, and reprieve, especially from Renwick's perspective, and daytime is where (most of) the horrors come from. I've come to notice that Ren himself is very moon-coded, and Erevan is stars-coded. Other than that I don't think there's any specific character symbols as of yet? At least, none that are wholly unique to that specific character? Like, I associate the color blue with Vince, he's the one most drenched in blue, but there's so many characters that it would be absurd if he was the only one allowed to wear blue or have that as a main color.

if i can impart any one piece of wisdom to y’all, it’s to, whenever possible, assume good intentions
assume people are trying their best, want to be good and treat others well, and that when their behavior doesn’t align with those goals, it’s because of outside factors that are pushing them to their limit
it’s hard to do, it doesn’t always come naturally, but it’s worth it

"When people talk about gender-affirming surgery using words like “mutilation,” that's not very nice. Is that how you think about people who've had surgery for other things? It's a disgust reaction, and I do not take disgust into account as a legitimate point of discourse. I don't have to entertain it and I'm not going to. It's a waste of everybody's time, it's knee-jerk, it's not grounded in reality, and it's not useful. And it's a squeamishness about medical intervention. I think the idea of making legislative or cultural decisions in and around [that] is laughable. Your squeamishness is not what the world turns on; it doesn't matter."

Thank you so much for the ask, @liv-is! I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get to it 😫 busy times, busy times...
I think I generally figure out symbols as I go--a character is likened to a symbol repeatedly and then I tee-hee and add it intentionally. :) I often have a character represented by the sun, or light, and colors get associated with them too.

Happy blursday! 💜💌 What are the fic-y tropes (generally romantic, but not necessarily) that your blorbo(s) would LEAST be able to stand being involved in, and what are they doing to tolerate or to get out of these situations? (e.g., who is sleeping on the floor when There's Only One Bed; who starts going to a different coffee shop to avoid The AU?; who digs their way out of the snowstorm to avoid being Snowed In? Who's out here crushing the would-be Enemy to Friend to Lover's dreams?)- @liv-is
Happy blorbo blursday! Ooh this is a fun question; thank you @liv-is!!
Ren was a tough one, because he loves tropes, especially romance tropes. Probably the Tragic Love Interest Death TM? He wants to live happily ever after with his sweetheart, especially since he's been so lonely for so long, and if they die tragically (ESPECIALLY if they were trying to save him!!!!) he would feel so horrible and guilty over it!!! And, being a vampire, he has the means to potentially stop/reverse such a tragic death......
Styx is easy. She's aromantic, so any romance trope happens and they are Out. She avoids domestic aus by not having a house.
Erevan was difficult since he can also be a trope enjoyer but I just imagined him getting caught up in a Billionaire Romance a-la Fifty Shades and him using that to persuade said billionaire to redistribute his wealth (and stop using private jets if this is in the modern day).
Vince is demisexual and hates the idea of Love At First Sight. There are many complicated reasons why he acts outwardly mean (which get explored at some point), but preventing someone from thinking they just experienced a rom-com meet-cute is a bonus!

"I cannot tell you the complete, fundamental shift that I have felt in the year since having surgery. I knew that I wanted top surgery for a decade; it's the longest I've ever thought about doing anything. The place where I went, I had that clinic's website open on my laptop for five years. It was this impossible mountain: I want that, but I'm never gonna get it. No one's gonna let me, blah, blah, blah. To have that be in the past now... I stand differently, I walk differently, I carry myself differently. It feels different in my body than it ever has. I have just never been happier. I've never been more centered. I've never felt more stable and present and alive. It's the best thing I've ever done for myself. It’s taught me a lot. The recovery process taught me about rest, accepting help, and caring for my body as something connected to me rather than separate from me, that I’m in opposition to: This is mine and I want to take care of it. I feel good in it and good about it. Part of cis people's fear around gender-affirming surgery is the fear of surgery at all — 'Oh, my God, but that's painful and scary!' My reaction to that is, 'No, no, you misunderstood. It was painful before. Your worry has kicked in at the wrong time. The right time to be concerned was about the pain I was in before this. I'm great now.' Everybody else's concern for me has been on a delay. There's no need to be concerned anymore. That's so freeing."

Happy WBW! 💜💌 Are there any unique punishments for certain crimes in the world of your WIP? Do authorities in your WIP take certain crimes (murder, theft, etc.) more or less seriously than we would? Are there unique crimes that can be committed due to the nature of this magic/society/world? :) - @liv-is
Thanks for the ask, friend! Sorry it's so late. :)
In The Invisible Girl, we're watching as industry and machines start to replace out magic--people with a Gift are no longer integral to society, so they're slowly being moved to the slums and almost hunted, while the ungifted become wealthier and wealthier due to technology and turn a blind eye to the problems happening beneath their notice. The police are generally ungifted and deep in the pockets of the wealthy, and while use of magic isn't illegal yet, things don't look good.
Actually, basically the answer is no, I haven't thought up anything for punishments yet, and I am very sorry 😫😂 Have a random fact up there that I thought correlated but doesn't really
