The thing about liveship traders that I think is so dope is that from page one you’re given exactly the tools that the vestrits will use to get through everything together. They are traders, they bargain. They don’t just bargain their way into marriages, they bargain their way out of poverty, into new government structures, into the favor of the most powerful people and creatures in their world, into royal status among dragons and pirates and diplomats, until they’re literally shaping a new society and new relationship with humanity entirely. From day one we understand that this family has a specific skill set and then they use it to dig their way out of hell.

I want nothing more than for the Fool to meet back up with Fitz, and for some reason they need a ship to get them somewhere, and the Fool is just like "Oh yes I can get us a ship! I'll just send them a message" and they get to the docs and Fitz is just like "Oh wow is that a Liveship? I've heard of them but never got to see one before! Strange, do you think he looks a bit... familiar?" And Fool/Amber is just sweating bullets like "I don't know what you mean!"

Meanwhile when they get on deck, Brashen and Althea are just looking at Amber and Fitz with narrowed eyes like "... I know what you did"

Teeny Liveship Traders rant

It irks me just how frequently, when the /r/fantasy subreddit talks about these books, people fall over each other to declare how much they hated Malta in the beginning. Yes, they usually go on to praise her character development, but it's still nuts that they are reading a book with murderers and rapists and slavers, and the character they single out for their harshest anger is a 12 years old girl. For being ... immature?

And sometimes someone vomits up the take that Aha But Kyle Was Actually Right About Althea Being Underqualified, as if it's a redeeming quality for him, a mindblowingly wise observation that proves he knew his stuff and isn't such a total idiot after all. First of all: She's not even 19 at that point, it does not take a supergenius to figure out she still lacks experience. Secondly, it's still impossible that she would have done a worse job than Kyle as captain of the Vivacia, because he got his entire crew killed and lost the ship to pirates. XD That dumb fuck.
