#living with N24

Hello i couldn't help but notice that u offered urself up as a resource for info abt N24 (sorry if i got that wrong, feel free to ignore this.) So as someone who very recently found out abt it and also probably has it, do u have any resources? Links or articles or anything for me to look at? Anything you could/want to share abt it??
Hey! Yes, I'm happy to write about my experience with N24. (It's not fun, but it's reality for many people.) The sad thing is that I don't actually have many online resources as far as articles and such. A quick internet search showed me Non-24-Hour Sleep Wake Disorder: Definition and Causes | Sleep Foundation which seemed to be a good overview (more articles linked at the bottom of the page). It's very clear that there hasn't been enough research done in a practical sense, though. Treatment options are few, and there aren't any that are at all flexible. Which, I'll just say it, sucks.
For me personally, my N24 is pretty severe, with my days lasting about 30 hours or such, so that I'm awake for something like 20 hours at a time. None of the treatment options presented to me (melatonin and/or light therapy) were effective (I have unusual environmental factors against me, though). That doesn't mean you shouldn't try them, IMHO - but I would caution you against accepting whatever sedatives doctors are handing out these days. If that's their initial reaction/treatment advise, ask them if that medication is approved and tested effective for long term usage. (It won't be - if I'm wrong, lmk, because I'd like to be wrong.)
Lastly, I'll tell you a bit about how I got my diagnosis. The biggest factor was a comprehensive sleep diary. Sometimes they'll ask you to do a sleep study as well, to rule out other sleep disorders. A sleep diary is crucial in helping the specialist evaluate the progressive time changes in your sleep patterns. I recommend getting a low-cost sports watch (with a small profile so it's comfortable to sleep in) if you don't already have one. That was a huge help to me when I was documenting my sleep patterns.
I hope that helps! I wish I could give you better news, but I do believe it's preferable to know what you're dealing with than to not - even if it's not something with an easy fix. Let me know if you have any other questions - I am not a sleep doctor or physician, but I can speak to the realities of living with N24. If I can help others at all, I like to. Good luck!

The fact that most of the tags under n24 have nothing to do with the disorder and that there's only a handful of posts under every single tag for it sure FEELS like ableism even though it might not be. But I have the time to talk about it so I might as well spread visibility.
(Info under read more)
N24, Non-24, or Non-24 Sleep-Wake Disorder, is a circadian rhythm disorder where your body doesn't run on a (roughly) 24-hour cycle like most people/people without the disorder itself. For example, my days run roughly 18-19 hours instead of a typical 16. My sleep gets later and later and later. I've tried melatonin, tried resetting my sleep schedule by staying up for >24 hours until a "normal" time for bed, and tried keeping ambient noise on like music or nature sounds. I've tried blue light filters. My days are just 26-27 hours instead of a normal 24, though every person with N24 is different.
It's primarily diagnosed in Blind patients, since the cause among Blind people with the disorder seems to be that not being able to see the transition from day to night makes their bodies not produce the proper sleep hormones at the right time.
Among sighted people, the cause seems to be unknown (last time I checked; just one person with the disorder should not be your only source of information!) and, since N24 among sighted people is more rare and less lucrative, it's an orphan disorder. There's not much research into how to help us sighted people with N24 because treatment is often pricey or not an actual solution, or it is aimed directly towards helping Blind people with N24.
As far as I know, there's apparently an implantable device in development. The main suggestions I see are training via sun lamps and melatonin or just trying to get on sleeping pills by lying about insomnia. There is a pill that can be taken, but if you live in the US, it is extremely expensive. So, essentially, this orphan disorder is overlooked and misdiagnosed, and those of us with it have to hope that one of the coin-toss methods of treating N24 works.
N24, even on its own, can be a very disabling disorder. You're either too-sleep deprived to do the things during the day you need to or are busy being asleep because the human body needs rest at some point. Socialization gets very difficult when your circadian rhythm is nocturnal for a couple of weeks. It's an isolating experience. It also makes it harder for people to work and make themselves money. I don't even know if N24 is something that can apply to an application for disability, though given it's not well-known, I doubt it is.
I'm not used to making informative posts like this, so I don't know how to end it, but please do some research into N24 on your own time--I am by no means a medical professional and my anecdotal explanation may contain errors. I just want people to know we exist.

hello sorry for the pretty much unsolicited advice but i'm very passionate about circadian rhythm things and i wanted to say that staying up later than your "natural bedtime" to attempt to force reset your sleep schedule has the potential to do a fair amount of damage to your circadian rhythm and push you into a n24 schedule (which, as someone with n24, is not easy to live with o(-< ). the "safest" options are either trying to work with your natural schedule, or using various stimuli to encourage a phase advance to push your natural sleep and wake up times earlier. if that's something you want to look into, this is the most comprehensive resource out there https://circadiaware.github.io/VLiDACMel-entrainment-therapy-non24/SleepNon24VLiDACMel.html#adaptations-for-dspd (worth looking through regardless, if only for the fair bit of information about how these things work in the first place)
please tell me in simple terms exactly what i need to do to fix it i am begging

Winners of Wan-Ifra Digital Media Awards Europe 2024
Tumblr media
Wan-Ifra Digital Media Awards has named European news publishers whose projects and products showcase creativity, inspiration and service to their readers, for the Digital Media Awards Europe 2024. This is the 17th year of the awards.
Each of this year’s winning initiatives displays outstanding innovation, from AI-use cases that increase value for audiences and better efficiencies for staff, to community focused data projects that represent local journalism at its best.
The winners of each category will now be automatically entered into the 2024 Digital Media World Awards, where they will compete with the top projects from other regions around the globe.
WINNERS
Best Data Visualization
Project: Community mapping – Tracking the health of our high streets
Company: The Courier and Press and Journal, United Kingdom
While trying to understand the impact of the pandemic, the cost of living crisis and inflation on a local level, the staff at The Courier and Press and Journal noticed a big gap in data illustrating vacancy rates of retail space on Scottish high streets. So they set out to fill that gap, going on foot through the cities to complete a census and turning hand drawn maps into interactive floor plans, building a data set and tool that is valuable for both their newsroom and their audiences. Judges commented: “This project is a great example of data journalism for local newspapers. Data visualization formats are varied and well done. DC Thomson staff was able to offer the same approach in several cities, and managed to combine this data with human stories. It’s proof that newsrooms can produce structured data, turn it into engaging visualizations as well as transform it into empathic stories.”
Best in Audience Engagement (it’s a tie!)
Project: Kuglolov
Company: NOVA TV d.d., Croatia
Using creativity and a true understanding of how different age groups interacted with different platforms, the team at NOVA TV was able to create an interactive holiday campaign that engaged audiences and helped them to affirm their status as the most viewed channel in December 2023. The campaign also supported their goal of boosting viewership of 18-24 year olds, which increased by 9.5% compared to the previous few months, and smashing their goal of increased +15% app downloads, instead hitting a +1,228% growth. Judges said: “Love to see a contest example as a way to drive engagement. And a lighthearted one at that! The app integration makes for a great user experience, and the results were impressive. Wonderfully executed and a very original idea.”
Project: Revitalizing the WELT community
Company: WELT N24 GmbH, Germany
Wanting to stabilize subscriber engagement and improve retention, the team at WELT worked to improve the user experience of their Community online forum through greater transparency, better moderation quality and creating a more valuable discussion atmosphere. Their work included using AI-based comment moderation, increased collaboration with the editorial team, better access within the app, and a new, regular “video live chat” format with journalists answering readers’ questions. These efforts resulted in a growth in engagement between readers and the editorial team, about 13,500 page views for each “video live chat”, a successful “comment window” feature that increased page views, comments read and comments written, and a rise in customers citing the Community as USP. Judges remarked: “Commenting is a feature that many news companies implement, but few do well. However, as made clear in the WELT data, it is a feature that is important to many audiences. WELT took a systematic, data-driven approach to improving comments for audiences and clearly documented their increased engagement due to the changes.”
Best News Website
Project: ALT – a Norwegian one stop shop for personalized news content
Company: Amedia, Norway
How to give audiences access to more than 1,000 articles a day from over 100 newspapers without overwhelming them. That was the puzzle ALT was created to solve. Setting out to build a more personal, empowering way to engage with the news, the team worked toward a product that had personalization at its core, with seamless navigation and an enriched user experience with unique features. Powered by a cross functional team who used data insights and user feedback to develop agile iterations, ALT is a service that provides users with a personal and intuitive experience that creates deeper connections with the content. ALT now has more than 60,000 unique weekly users that show greater loyalty and contributes to new subscriptions and upgrades. Judges commented: “I think it’s an excellent approach. A good idea and easy to use.”
Best Use of Video
Project: TF1 INFO / TF1 + : the origins of global warming
Company: TF1, France
Global warming is a vast and complex topic, but one that is ever present in our daily lives. Ahead of the COP28 summit, the team at TF1 wanted to create a video that could be a resource for all ages and educational levels, to help people understand the fundamentals of why climate change is happening and why it is so difficult to slow. Using a highly creative combination of volumetric video, CGI and AI they were able to create a format that allowed their journalists to effectively convey their content in a way that is engaging for a wide variety of audiences. The video was published on their news site and streaming platform, and is also shown in schools and colleges, bringing viewership of the video to the millions for this important topic. Judges said: “I love the way AI was used to create a magic world that helps people understand the story. The story is clear and easy to consume.” ”Very impressive work in terms of quality and innovation.”
Best Digital Subscription / Reader Revenue Project
Project: The launch of +Allt – Bonnier News’ first bundled product
Company: Bonnier News, Sweden
+Allt is Sweden’s first bundled digital news subscription product, including national and local titles, financial news, content from lifestyle sites and sports broadcasts. Launched in February of 2023 with the goal of increasing the number of brands read by consumers and enhancing engagement and experience, +Allt has exceeded 200,000 purchases within its first year, far surpassing their original goal of 50,000. The wide array of content and unified customer journey has helped combat retention with active and engaged subscribers, as well as contributed to Bonnier News’ high digital growth rate in 2023. Judges commented: “A good example how strong brands can add increased value to a bundle-product: 1+1=3”
Best Newsletter
Project: The Chris Giles on Central Banks Newsletter
Company: The Financial Times, United Kingdom
Launched in October 2023, and with 6,000 signups before the first edition was sent out, this newsletter has clearly addressed a topic audiences are interested in, and the conversational, concise writing style keeps readers curious and engaged. Boasting an average open rate of 48% in 2023, the newsletter is sent out every Tuesday and features thoughtful commentary, charts, graphics and analysis about the central banks from former economics editor, Chris Giles. A wonderful example of combining a trusted and passionate writer, unique yet digestible insights on a complex topic, and valuable visuals to create an engaging and impactful newsletter. Judges remarked: “One might imagine that a newsletter on Central Banks would be a bit dry, but that is certainly not the case here. An excellent example of a topic-based newsletter built around a highly knowledgeable writer who is clearly an engaging storyteller. Bravo!”
Best Podcast
Project: #HerNameWas
Company: Stampen Lokala Medier, Sweden
A powerful investigative podcast that puts an important spotlight on gender-based violence. This podcast calls attention to the fact that in many of these cases, the women could have been saved if different agencies or groups had acted faster or even at all. Just as important, #HerNameWas puts the women, the victims, and their stories at its core, making them the protagonists and honoring their memories. The podcast, which has been listened to more than 500,000 times, has also helped engage a larger audience of young women, with 85% of listeners being women and a majority of readers on related articles being young women aged 25-34 years old. Judges commented: “This is a targeted and well thought-out podcasting product. It is filling an important gap.”
Best Use of AI in the Newsroom
Project: Russmedia meets AI
Company: Russmedia, Austria
An exceptional blueprint for integrating AI into workflows and operations, Russmedia’s thoughtful and strategic implementation of AI is as impactful as it is ambitious. Harnessing a culture of innovation and adaptability, they incorporated AI into their CMS and Image Search Tool, as well as paywall strategies, content optimization and user engagement tools, allowing journalists to work more effectively and efficiently and improving how they serve their audiences. Russmedia also made sure that these tools were not only available, but understood and embraced by staff through AI workshops, breakfast sessions and additional learning opportunities. With the new tools implemented and a culture of continuous learning, Russmedia has created a sustainable model for embracing the dynamic digital landscape ahead. Judges said: “This is a brilliant example of how the incorporation of AI tools into workflows can help journalists and newsrooms to become more efficient, more reader focused, and exploit their archives.”
Best Use of AI in Revenue Strategy
Project: The Platform Intelligence in News project (PIN)
Company: Ekstra Bladet, Denmark
With the goal of increasing editorial and commercial value by using AI to address reader’s pain points, as well as to put themselves in a strong position for future digitization, the Platform Intelligence in News (PIN) project was created. The team focused on three types of AI, recommender systems, natural language processing, and natural language generation. They went through a rigorous testing and evaluation process in order to most effectively implement the AI systems within Ekstra Bladet to create a richer news experience for their readers. Through their work they have seen increased subscription sales, use of paid-for news by subscribers and use of free news. With their created team of AI specialists and multitude of AI systems and use cases, the team has created a strong foundation for continuing to adapt to new technologies with creativity and innovation. Judge’s comments: “An intentional, methodical approach to integrating AI into your editorial workflow that balanced achieving efficiencies with a focus on delivering value to audiences.”
Best Fact Checking Project
Project: AFP Fact Check: how to verify information online
Company: Agence France-Presse, France
In a time when verifying what is real and what is fake can feel overwhelming, AFP has brilliantly leveraged video as an effective format for informing and showing journalists and the public how to verify content found online and identify potentially false information. These videos, created in long and short formats by the journalists, are useful well beyond their publication date and create trust through connecting the journalists straight to the viewers.  Judges said: “A powerful and creative initiative that not only informs but also brings journalists and users new ways to cross-check the news they consume and/or report about. The choice of platform (YouTube) and format (short or longer videos) is particularly relevant for the audiences. The content comes across as authentic, credible and accessible.”
Best Innovative Digital Product
Project: The Short Version
Company: VG, Norway
VG’s articles have been increasing in word count, while their young readers had been asking for shorter articles. The solution? Creating expandable summaries that give readers a more concise version of the article. Using OpenAI’s GPT models to generate summaries, which are then fact checked and edited by journalists, the Short Versions are an exemplary product, showing the impact that listening to the needs of readers can have on engagement. The Short Versions are used by 20% of VG’s audience, within younger audience demographics that number is 30%, and readers of the Short Versions show increased read time on average. Judges remarked: “Great, smart feature aligned with clearly-identified audience needs. Keeping a human in the loop is awesome too.”
Best Native Advertising Campaign
Project:The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation
Company: Bonnier News, Sweden
This native advertising campaign showcases the power of partnership, innovation and compelling content in creating commercial campaigns that bring maximum benefits to all partners. The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation joined forces with Bonnier News to highlight their 120th anniversary with the goal of spreading knowledge and increasing donations. Utilizing native and television features, social media, print outlets, ads, and a completely unique conversion widget which allowed readers to make donations easily and without leaving the article, the team was able to build an incredibly successful campaign with high levels of engagement and donations. Judges commented: “An inspiring, impactful and hugely successful integrated campaign. This entry is a masterclass in combining purposeful content with segmentation and audience awareness with platform appropriate technology to generate great results.

Another autistic person with n24!! I saw your post from last august about sort of resenting when the schedule aligns to society’s and while I don’t ever post on here idk i just wanted to say i get it ig?? Or I’m glad someone else gets it?? I sleep so much better in the day, sunlight is too harsh and white it’s hard to see when I’m outside sometimes, i like not having to be around more people than the ones who live in my house. It’s to a point that i almost dread treatment and entrainment for fear of loosing it?? It’s so dark and quite and cool at four in the morning, i can sit on the floor of my kitchen and watch the sun rise and it feels like the only things left on earth are me and my cat. I don’t have to regulate myself at all there’s no one watching me no one to perform socially for and there’s nothing going on to trip up any of my senses it’s lovely. My day is about 25-25 1/2 hours so i cycle into a socially acceptable time every week and a half or so and i end up having to do so much in those few days of daylight i have that its overwhelming i hate that week so much sometimes its insane. It feels like I wasn’t built to be diurnal at all sometimes and that if i ever manage to entrain i should become fully nocturnal instead.
AYY HELLO!! i'm still so surprised at how many ppl have both autism and non-24! i had no idea that post was gonna reach as many as it did. i'm so glad i'm not alone in this, i hate hate hate when i'm diurnal and i'm so much happier on a nocturnal clock, even if that means i can't go out and experience the world around me as much. and my day's about 25.5 hours too!
if it helps at all, i was scared of treatment too because i genuinely like my sleep cycle despite how disordered it is- for all the reasons i talk about in that post. i like being diurnal sometimes so i can go outside and be part of a society, but i also need to be nocturnal sometimes so i can recharge and manage my sensory issues. i begrudgingly tried light therapy and a few different sleep medications for about two years, obviously none of it worked but they (the doctors and specialists in charge of my care) just wanted me to try it anyway, and i wasn't able to entrain myself at all without becoming really sleep-deprived and depressed. i eventually was able to communicate all this with them, and i've been let to free-run my sleep since it causes me the least amount of distress and it's what i prefer for myself. like you have options if you hate how you're living on treatment- you'll find the path of least misery eventually

Five More Minutes - Eraqus x Reader
Hey, you guys remember the Five More Minutes - Brain x Reader story? Well thanks to a CERTAIN SOMEONE, the character for the prompt changed from Eraqus to Brain because Nova is a petty bitch.
And AT LEAST ONE OF YOU UNDERSTANDS THAT! THANK YOU!
Tumblr media
However, I’ve been thinking about this WIP for a while and I put myself out there, so I’ll kinda forgive ffm-non’s heinous crime for now and post Five More Minutes with Eraqus.
Music Inspiration: Hikari (Godson Remix) by Hikaru Utada
~~~~~
              Rushing through the streets of Scala, I bob and weave between unsuspecting citizens on my way to the theater. Today’s the day—hopefully. I’ve spent the last week trying to get a ticket for this show but it’s been sold out every day. Both my saving grace and the bane of my existence is that they aren’t pre-selling tickets, so it’s first come first serve for who gets to see the show.
              I’m heaving like I just ran halfway across the city—because I did—but I finally make it to the theater. Unlike the last few days, I find myself in luck at the sight of the relatively short line. With excitement bubbling in my chest, I race to join the queue.
              Just as I reach the line, something jumps in my way. I garner the embarrassing attention of several people in the vicinity as I topple to the ground, taking the obstacle down with me.
              Hastily, I pull my face from the white fabric.
              “Oh gods! I’m so sorry!” I say, scrambling my feet and taking the strangers hand to pull him up. “Are you okay?! Did I hurt you?!”
              Suddenly, I hear my name and finally get a look at the young man I’d practically tackled. I know him. While my family does not follow the noble keyblade warrior tradition like his, our magic has been revered so our families have been amicable for years. At least once or twice our year, our families get together for dinner and we almost always see each other at events for the more affluent people in the city.
              “Eraqus?”
              A beaming smile crosses his lips. “Hey! What’s up!”
              Heat surges into my ears. While I’ve been forced to be within proximity of this boy for years, I’ve never been caught alone with him before. He’s certainly cute and, while our parents may not think so, I find him kind of funny. Still, while I kind of know him, because of our families’ differences we’ve never actually been friends.
              “Uh, not much. I was just trying to get in line for tonight’s show. But seriously, I didn’t see you. Are you okay?”
              This kid’s laugh stirs something in my chest.
              “Yeah, I’m good. My friends hit me harder than that in training.”
              The sheer happiness rolling off him is distracting. “I…I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
              “Nah, it’s alright; we make each other stronger.” His eyes glance away. “So, I guess you wanted to see this show too?” An arm gestures to the moving line that we scoot along with.
              “Yeah. I’ve been trying to see it the last few days, but it’s been sold out. What about you? I wouldn’t have guessed theater to be something you enjoy?”
              He folds his arms. “Mmm, I like some of them, but my friends really wanted to see this one.”
              I take a moment to take in our surroundings. “Um, what friends?”
              His cheer is bright and captivating, but even the defeated frown it morphs into is somehow endearing.
              “Nobody wanted to come early to wait in line, but we probably wouldn’t get tickets if we came on time.”
              I nod, understanding the dilemma.
              “So Bragi suggested rock-paper-scissor.”
              Now it all makes sense. “And you lost, so now you’re here to buy tickets for everyone.”
              “Yeah…” His pouting is so cute.
              A small giggle escapes me. “So it’s sheer coincidence I happen to literally run into you today?”
              That smile’s back. “Or! We could call it luck.”
              “I would assume bad luck; you lost a game of chance and I literally ran into you.”
              “Details.”
              And so we keep each other company. The more I talk to the boy, the more I can confirm how fucking adorable he is. His smile is infectious and I find myself hanging on every word, no matter how wild the tale is. I can barely even drag my gaze away long enough to take a few steps before I’m staring at his beautiful face again. Before long, I can already tell I’m head over heels for him. Even after tickets are purchased, we find a bench nearby to continue our chat.
              It only ends when someone calls his name. There’s a small herd of people making their way closer.
              Getting to his feet, Eraqus greets his friends. “Hey guys, what’re you doin’ here early?”
              “Early?” snorts the girl with silver hair. “The show starts in twenty minutes.” Her golden eyes catch sight of me. “Who’s this?”
              I wave to Baldr and Hermod, both of whom I know from similar family social events. They do the honor of introducing me to the gaggle, which is both a bit lighthearted and overwhelming. They seem like a great group of friends to have, despite their differences.
              “It was good to see you again,” Hermod says, leading the mass towards the entrance. “But we’d better take our seats before the show starts.”
              “You got the tickets, right Eraqus?” Xehanort asks.
              “Right here.” He pushes all but one into his friend’s hand before turning to me. “Which seat are you in?”
              I look at my stub. “E7.” The look on his face is disappointment. “Where are you at?”
              “N24,” he mutters. That’s literally on the other side of the theater from where I am and I find myself similarly disappointed with the arrangement.
              “Guess I’ll have to get your opinions on the show some other time,” I say, trying to make the blow a little softer.
              Our eyes meet and I feel myself being drawn in.
              “Maybe we could meet up at that little café around the corner?” he asks.
              “The one with the fancy s’mores?”
              “Yeah! That one!”
              Eraqus detours the conversation with a tale about the time he and went there with his friends and one of them ended up spilling a drink on everyone—pretty sure it was Eraqus by the way he kept switching names. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but laugh.
              “Eraqus, the show’s about to start!” I don’t even know which one it was that yelled at him.
              “’Kay! Just gimme five more minutes!”
              Excited chitchat continues, following tangent after tangent and never with a lull. I could continue on like this for ages, happy to spend hours in his presence, enamored by the boy I never really knew.
              I drag my hands down my face. “And then, because I stupidly thought things couldn’t get any worse, I tried to use a fire spell to dry him off and set him on fire.”
              Eraqus is laughing so hard he’s crying. “Wait wait wait! I remember Hermod came to school with a huge hole in his jacket! Was that you?!” I nod in sheepish shame. “Oh my gods! We thought he got mugged or something! He wouldn’t tell us what happened!”
              “Every time our families get together, our parents won’t let us live it down. Mine won’t even let me join them anymore without asking me to ‘please not light their colleague’s kids on fire.’”
              “And here I thought you were the smart, cool type,” he teases.
              “As much as I’d love to be, I’m actually a total mess.”
              “That’s okay; I am too.”
              “Oh really? I always thought you were laid back and easy going. With our families’ prestige, I was always kind of jealous of how calm you are about everything.”
              “Then you have clearly never seen me wake up late for class.”
              The laughing between us dies down, but before I can make another comment, I realize that he’s watching me. This isn’t watching like two people waiting for cues in a conversation, but watching as if he’s looking for something very specific.
              Beneath his scrutiny, my brain starts to malfunction, causing my ability to speak to take a hit. “Um, I…I’m pretty sure anyone would…would panic if they woke up late for class.”
              “I guess.” The softness suddenly introduced into his voice feels like an arrow through the heart. “But it’s probably not the same when it’s a weekly occurrence.”
              Is he leaning in?
              “No…I guess not…”
              He is—he is very much leaning in.
              “Eraqus.” I can’t even speak above a whisper.
              “Hmm?”
              My heart is pounding in my ears, trying desperately to drown out my thoughts.
              “I think our show’s started,” I breathe.
              “Five more minutes,” he murmurs against my lips.
              Not a single protest is heard from me. No, I’m too preoccupied with electricity coursing through my veins. For a moment, Eraqus leads the way, soft and slow, likely assessing my shock. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what my reaction should be, but my body tells me to just see where this goes. And with each passing second, I’m falling down the rabbit hole with him.
              The world suddenly jars to when the source of my euphoria breaks away. His brows pinch together, concern written across his face.
              “I’m sorry,” he mutters, his voice wracked with uncertainty. “I thought—”
              Without asking my head for permission, my hands snag his haori.
              “Five more minutes,” I say softy.
              Our lips connect again and, though I’m prepared for the jolt, I still feel the weight of the world disappear around us. This time, I lead, hoping my confidence sends the right idea to the young man. I think he gets it, happily matching my every move. His little sighs cause my stomach to squirm, making self-control difficult. But there will be plenty of time for the rest later, for now, I want to take my time and get a grasp on how his lips feel against mine.
              I pull away, using a deep breath the calm my racing heart and ground me back in reality. Eraqus, too, breathes a little heavier, and yet he continues watching me as if he’s still fully enraptured. That look is hypnotizing, subtly—easily—luring me in again.
              That quickly goes out the window.
              “Eraqus!”
              Flinching, he whirls back, where his entire group of friends is standing with mixed expression. My blood freezes.
              “What?!” he shouts back.
              “Are you comin’ back to the dorms with us or not?” Urd demands.
              My eyes dart to the sky. It was dark when the show started, but the moon sat higher among the stars than it had moments ago—or what I thought was only moments ago.
              Eraqus’s gaze flips back and forth between me and them. “Did…Did we miss the whole show?!”
              “Yes, you dingus!”
              Hermod gives a soft smile. “C’mon guys, give him a break.”
              The red-head, Bragi, snickers. “Yeah, the kid’s only been dreaming of this moment his whole life.”
              My mouth falls open but I can just see Eraqus’s face burning brightly.
              “BRAGI!”
              “Oops.” The offender grins unabashedly. “My bad.”
              Xehanort folds his arms, smirking. “Ooooh, so this is that cute little mage he’s been crushing on.”
              “You mean that one he always talks about after he visits his family?” Her tone is full of innocence, but the grin on the little blonde’s face is pure evil.
              Oh my gods, I might implode.
              “YOU GUYS!”
              “What was it he said last time?” Urd asks, also basking in Eraqus’s flustering.
              Baldr answers, “I believe it was something along the lines of ‘I would give up naps for an entire year if the gods would just let me have a single—‘”
              “I’LL DO EVERYONE’S HOMEWORK FOR A MONTH IF YOU JUST GO AWAY!” Eraqus yells, waving his arms as if he might fly away from this mess.
              Hermod begins ushering everyone away. “Seriously, guys, let’s go.”
              “Wait! I don’t want him doing my homework!” Bragi protests. “He’s failing like half our classes!”
              Glancing back with one last devious look, Xehanort responds, “Let him have his moment; we’ll just make him do something else later.” The expression softens when he gives me a genuine wink.
              Finally, after instigating all the butterflies in my stomach to the point I might vomit sparkles, they leave. We sit in suffocating silence for an awkward moment. Then, one of the butterflies must’ve escaped into my brain when I suddenly crack a laugh.
              “An entire year without naps, huh?”
              Still cherry red, he looks at me, mortified.
              His floundering gives me the bit of confidence I need to close the gap once again. “And what was it you so desperately begged the gods for?”
              Eraqus’s back meets the wall, but he still puts on a smile, even if it is bashful. “Let’s just say I’ve already lost my napping privileges for the year.”
              “Yeah? So if the gods were to grace you a second time, would that be two years without naps?”
              His nerves seem to melt and those stunning gray eyes glitter in the moon as he watches me. “You gonna stick around and find out?”
              “How long were you thinking?” I slip my arms around his neck, unable to stop myself from twirling a strand of ebony hair between my fingers.
              “Oh at least five more minutes.”
              “Just five?”
              He feigns mulling it over in head. “And maybe five more after that.”
