Church of the Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini. Close to important monuments such as Palazzo Farnese and a few blocks away from Ponte Sisto and via Giulia, in the Regola district, the church stands on the site of the oldest “San Benedetto de Arenula”. In 1558 Pope Paul IV donated it to St Philip Neri and his charitable brotherhood in favor of the pilgrims, the poor and sick. Its present name and appearance is thus linked to the Archconfraternity of the Pilgrims and Convalescents of the Holy Trinity, which at the end of the 16th century started its reconstruction due to the very bad condition of the old church. Its rebuilding was initially entrusted to the architect Martino Longhi the Elder; after his death, works were interrupted and resumed in 1603 under the direction of Giovanni Paolo Maggi, a little-known architect. [WP] Two friends are at the end of their time at a space military academy, one fuelled by revenge, one fuelled by the hope that she can save the man she loves.

“One day that’ll be me,” said Markus with determination and near gritted teeth, staring at the military troops as they received their new orders, Janice looked at him and could see he was clenching his fist as it shook.

Janice wanted to say something but was not sure what, she knew why they were here, it wasn’t a secret. Markus had been hell bent on joining the military, ever since the colony they grew up on had been attacked by separatists he only had one mind set, one objective. To join the military and take revenge.

They were two of the few survivors from the colony attack, they had lost all their friends and family. When the attack began Markus had reacted, like he always did and managed to get them to one of the safety shelters used in the case of emergency.

They ended up being ejected out into space when the colony suffered critical damage and broke apart, they watched on with little hope that their friends and families had survived, knowing the damage would be critical and anyone who hadn’t made it to an escape pod would be dead. The sight had broken Janice and caused something in Markus to switch.

They had been childhood friends, lived next door and grown up together, there had been joy in their lives, Markus was always full of joy and love, always protecting her and her little sisters. They always talked about how they would one day leave their little colony and explore the world. Little did they know, they would get their wish just in the most horrific way.

They had always been together, always felt that they would be together and after their colony was destroyed, they were and were alone together.

Markus had become cold and distant after the attack and decided he was going to join the military. His once joyful spirit and kind eyes turned dark. A hardness feeling his soul, his need and thirst for revenge the only thing that seemed to keep him going.  

Janice was not sure what to do, she never felt like the military was a place for her. But with no one else alive she could not help but follow him. Hoping that being close to him would help her get over her grief, help her move on and find her new place in this galaxy.

But she knew the biggest reason she had followed him was so she could try and bring back the Markus she once knew, the Markus who kissed her forehead when she fell off her bike, the Markus who helped his mother with cooking dinner every night, and the Markus who always saw the good in the world. She wanted her sweet and kind Markus back more than anything.

But they were almost at the end of their time at the academy, and his heart had only hardened as time went on. His need for revenge fulling his training and keeping his ever-burning anger alit. But for Janice she was not ready for it to be over, she knew if they were separated, she would lose him once and for all.

She saw the glimpses sometimes in him, the way he would smile at her when she joked with him, the way he stood watch as she trained, making sure she never got too hurt. She needed to be close to him, she needed to chip away at the walls he built the second they watched their colony break apart.

She feared for the future, feared for what would happen to the last person she knew, feared for what would happen to him, feared for what would happen to her. His was worried that his anger and need for revenge would get him killed. Hell, she knew it would get him killed. And that thought was like a vice around her heart. Making her sick to her stomach every day they got closer to their graduation.

They were not at war right now, but she knew that didn’t mean they wouldn’t be needed for dangerous missions and they galaxy was on a knifes edge. The separatists getting more violent and daring. Their need to be taken seriously as a threat growing. She tried not to think about it putting it to the back of her mind.

She stared at her best friend beside her, watching as he was coiled tight with anger, ready to release his built-up tension like a spring ready to break. So, she pushed back her worry and her fear. She just wanted to spend what little time she had left with Markus, enjoy the little time she had left with the man she loved.
