Lizzy and Charlotte are the best of friends

It's painful to read (later) about the friends drifting apart. There is a "restraint" and Lizzy is sure there can never be "real confidence" between them once Charlotte accepts Mr Collin's proposal. They maintain contact after the marriage:

"..their correspondence was as regular and frequent as it ever had been: that it should be equally unreserved was impossible. Elizabeth could never address her without feeling that all the comfort of intimacy was over; and, though determined not to slacken as a correspondent, it was for the sake of what had been rather than what was."

Lizzy never really acknowledges her position of privilege, not only does she have more money than Charlotte, she's younger and more attractive too. She begrudgingly accepts the marriage, though she never tells Charlotte, later (in a startling disclosure to someone she isn't close with) she says to Darcy:

"I am not certain that I consider her marrying Mr. Collins as the wisest thing she ever did. She seems perfectly happy, however; and, in a prudential light, it is certainly a very good match for her.”

At Hunsford Lizzy gives "Charlotte all the credit" for the interior of the house and admires her way of managing Mr Collins, not only does she send him often into the garden to get him out of the house (allowing him to be forgotten) but:

"When Mr. Collins said anything of which his wife might reasonably be ashamed...Charlotte wisely did not hear."

Charlotte has made a good choice for herself, she knew she didn't have options and could manage Mr Collins which we see her doing. In this adaptation once Lizzy visits Hunsford it's as though all is forgiven. But in the book it seems Lizzy never really forgives her for marrying Mr Collins rather than remaining a spinster in case someone better came along. It would be interested to see what choice Lizzy would have made in Charlotte's circumstances.

Mentalist Trivia - Pilot 1x01

Casting the Actors

EDIT: Owain was cast first as he had a pre-existing contract with Warner Bros where he would work soley for them. Then Tim and Amanda were cast.

When Robin was asked to portray Lisbon, she didn't have to do any screen tests!

ADDED: There were originally 5 or 6 actors in the running to play Patrick Jane. Two included Robert Downey Jr and David Schwimmer! The project was almost shelved until the studio started talks with Simon and the rest was history!

Robin was cast but did not sign a contract until they cast Simon at the last minute.

Robin and Simon had met through the Australian Friend Network years before they were cast in the show.

Episode Secrets

The scene where Jane tells the talk show hosts about Red John was trimmed down for time but the full version is on the S1 boxset.

The CBI Director in the original pilot was Indian or Native American and was going to be called RJ.

Simon marked up the pilot script with potential ideas for Bruno which Bruno then ended up using!

Simon says that in a few scenes he has a slightly red face as he was so embarrassed with saying some of Jane's cocky lines!

EDIT: The scene where the cast ate at the restaurant put them off eating lobster for life according to Amanda and Owain as they had to do so many takes where they ate the seafood! Owain ate 5-6 cold lobsters and said it was disgusting!

Reception

CBS called the pilot episode 'a wonderful mixture of light and dark' and 'great chemistry between Baker and Tunney'.

The focus group who watched the rough cut deemed Jisbon to be a 'possible steamy couple'.

When the pilot was re-aired on the Saturday after its original premiere, CBS omitted the final scene where Jane smiles under the RJ smile as they thought it was too dark.

Patrick Jane was originally going to be called Thomas or Daniel Jane.

Kimball Cho was originally going to be called Kendall.

EDIT: Wayne Rigsby was originally going to be called Wayne Gilzean. According to Owain, Wayne Gilzean was named after a striker from the 1966 England World Cup Squad.

Grace Van Pelt was originally going to be called Melody Van Pelt.

after a 3.5-year hiatus from gifmaking, I re-learned how to gif at the end of November and have since gained quite a few new followers and also confirmed I will be on this website until the day I die. Lizzy had a marvellous time ruining Lady Catherine's plans

Lady Catherine (and Lady Anne Darcy potentially*) intended Mr Darcy to marry Miss de Bourgh. Lizzy bursts onto the scene unknowingly stealing Mr Darcy's heart and ruining the tacit engagement.

Unfortunately for Lady Catherine, Lizzy is not like her brown nosing cousin (Mr Collins) and refuses to do anything demanded of her. Even if she hadn't changed her feelings about Darcy it's entirely possible she'd still lead Lady C on a merry chase just to spite her. If she hadn't show up, perhaps Darcy would have married his cousin as intended.

Lizzy's above comment is tongue in cheek but accurate too. Darcy may have eventually got around to proposing again but his aunts relation of the argument with Lizzy gives him hope, so he dashes back to Netherfield. Lady C thinks Darcy has the same views as her, and perhaps at one time he did, but Lizzy teased them out of him.

*She's dead, she can't talk for herself. I don't put it past Lady Catherine to use her dead sister's name in vain.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character? Lisbon: That she wears Jane's wedding ring on her necklace (and fully understands its significance/makes peace with him not taking it off/apologizes about it, etc.) and is so protective of him from the start. AND her lil dancing. Jane: That gift-giving is so clearly his love language because it's mine too 🥰 And the moments of life we see in him despite the tragedy, like building his sandcastle and making a daisy chain. Also, literally any time there's a kid.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in? Lisbon: Okay this might be silly but I kind of want to see her in Miss Congeniality because of the whole angry little princess thing 🤭 Jane: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, particularly for the Halloween Heist. I would loooove to see him with Peralta lmao

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like? Lisbon: This probably goes for all the characters, but the fandom thinks so deeply about her character and really digs in to the complexity and I love it. Jane: I love that everyone treats his story with respect and is so thoughtful about the nuance of his character! I also never ever imagined I'd call any man babygirl but this is the first fandom where I really 100% get it hehe

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character? Lisbon: I think she read at least one of Jane's letters every day and had her favorite ones memorized. I also think she put his teacup back together during those two years and just waited to surprise him with it when she felt the time was right. And that she would make his cup of tea for him when she was especially sad/missing him. I also love that she couldn’t answer when Jane called because it meant she had a voicemail from him, and I think she listened to it over and over. Jane: I think he buys or makes gifts for Angela and Charlotte on their birthdays and keeps them somewhere special (since we know he doesn't visit their graves to mark the anniversary). I also think he collected memories to share with Lisbon with the hope that he'd get to tell her and brought her some sort of gift, like a seashell.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot? Lisbon: 🫦 because of her lip biting! Jane: 👀 reminds me of Jane because he really embodies that emoji lol (also 🐸) and this 😌 reminds me of both of them (especially with a flower tucked behind their ear)
