explanations of each design and also a bonus doodle under the cut (its arguably the best part of this)

okay first off the height was loosely based off of how big the actual countries are.

LMANBURG - i based it kinda off of the people lmanburg was for. fox ears for fundy, flower for tommy and also a homage to the whole tommy singing to flowers and that's how they got the national anthem. The glasses are for wilbur bc he kinda made the whole thing. the outfit is based on the lmanburg uniforms. the tail is because most of the people in lmanburg are hybrids so. also the hair felt hamilton-y to me and that was funny. the three hearts on the uniform is part of a headcanon im currently working on but basically its a war medal. oh btw i love the lmanburg flag its symbolic and nice and works very well.

GREATER SMP - i made the flag for this bc there isn't an official flag. the flag was based on dream obviously cause its literally his whole country. anyway the crown is because that's what the leaders wear. the under shirt isn't very fancy because none of the members wear anything fancy. the coat jacket suit thing feels very traditional and proper to me which is the same as the nation so. also i debated on what i should do for the ears bc i was thinking human ears but also like all of the people have pointed ears so i decided to go for that

MANBURG - uhm i love the manburg flag btw <3 its so good and representative of the administration and also it feels like very modernized and sleek and americanized if you get what i mean but its still very destructive and has strong "evil" connotations as well as being a mockery of the lmanburg flag. okay now on to the design. i promise promise there's a difference between the suit/hair/pants and the skin its just really slight. anyway i think it looks cool either way. the big tie gives off "false confidence / cocky / big shot" to me and i thought that worked well. the horns are there bc schlatt obviously and its almost touching the eyes bc manburg is very self destructive and will never last. the ears are human bc manburg also isn't super friendly to hybrids (headcanon??).

POGTOPIA - sorry guys but i hate the pogtopia flag it makes no sense and has no reason and also i just ugly. but alas that's the flag so ill do what i can. anyway pogtopia is very desperate and also an absolute mess so the outfit is symbolic of that. the beanie is for pogbur ofc. you cant really see it but it also has big eyebags. the fangs are half destructive and also half bc its for hybrids. the ears and tail as well are the whole hybrid bit. i think that most hybrids (if they could) left manburg which treated them badly and went to pogtopia which was for the hybrids. also the tail is kinda reminiscent of niki who to me feels like what pogtopia was for. if that makes sense.

NEW LMANBURG - i also really like the new lmanburg flag. i think its cool. anyway the eyepatch bc it looks cool and also i thought it was reminscent of how fucked up lmanburg was and how they rebuilt. the wings again are kinda phoenix-y and also peace and whatever. the flowers are again like rebirth and renewal and stuff. the tail and ears and such are again bc of the whole hybrid thing. also the outfit is like a suit-ified lmanburg uniform

BADLANDS - okay so admittedly idk shit about the badlands. so. the flag is pretty cool tho. i gave it horns like bbh and cat ears like antfrost and a mouth like sam / bbh. i did the cloak and scarf thingy bc both bbh and ponk have something like that so i figured that fit. sorry there's nothing really special about this

SYNDICATE - wooo boy theres a lot here. so the syndicate does not have a flag so i had to make one. i looked some up and there was a lot of red and black which i liked. red bc of like anarchy and shit and then black bc that's also pretty anarchy-y but also withers which. they do a lot. i put it like slashed bc its very "conflict opposing dangerous" and that works well with the syndicate. and then i saw one a long time ago that was based on their end portal table so i also added that with the border and the thing in the middle. then i added a bit of gold because i wanted to and i thought it looked cool and to me gold is a syndicate color. i gave them a crown bc both techno and ranboo have crowns so. they have a cape bc its like a secret organization and then i added fluff bc its cold in the artic. the outfit is supposed to resemble the type of outfits that techno and ranboo and somewhat niki ? so like older outfits with the corest and fancy sleeves. and then also like good boots bc they do like fighting and stuff. the hair is short as like a niki and phil thing. also the tail kinda looks like ranboo and that was kinda accidental but i like it. the ears are feathered for phil and also kinda niki and i didn't think wings fit. the clasp is an eye of ender bc of the end portal table. you'd think the syndicate would be tiny tiny but i headcanon that they have other lesser members everywhere (just random informants and such) so

SNOWCHESTER -snowchester's flag is pleasing. also i like the memes about it being close to the mlm flag. anyway the outfit is obviously inspired by ctubbos outfit but its cold and called snowchester so i figured it fit. the small horns are for ranboo. the flowers are for peace and healing and whatever and also a homage to the lmanburgs. the curling horns are not close to the eye but could grow to be bc of nukes and such. the tail and curling horns are both puffy and tubbo.

LAS NEVADAS - i love the aesthetics of the las nevadas flag its so so good. anyway the outfit is pretty self explanatory. the horns and devil tail is bc its a place of sin (casino and whatever). the only reference to the habitants are the feathered ears (quackity) bc its not reeeaaaally for the residents.

KINOKO KINGDOM - okay. okay. the flag is absolutely by far the most aesthetically pleasing flag. i love love off white its amazing and makes sense. i gave it a mushroom hat because. mushroom. the hair is a mix of tina's, sapnap's and karl's. the collar is for george, and the sleeves are for tina. the rest of the outfit is kinda for karl??? if that makes sense. and then the tail is for tina and sapnap

EGGPIRE - i also lovee the eggpire flag. it works well. anyway you may notice that there is literally no callbacks to the eggpire members. that's cause the egg literally does not give a shit about the members. its hair is long and kinda curls like the vines. the dress is about temptation and also like. not battle ready doesn't need to explore or anything just happens. if that makes sense. vines around the head and waist for the silly factor. vine tail because it looks cool

LIMBO - i just did limbo bc i didnt know what else to do. anyway limbo has a sweater bc i feel like ghosts get sweaters and then also is in grayscale because that's the commonality

With regards to you saying tommy is resilient. Yes, absolutely. And I think that plays into the other thing you said, how projection into a character contains multitudes.

The really interesting thing about this fandom, moreso felt on the SBI side, is how we have the ability to blend two completely different people into one. We have both c and cc. *Especially* with regards to tommy..

But ok, for let's say Wilbur. His cc self is really known for music and that is a staple in fics. But in cannon, that's never been a thing aside from him writing the lmanburg national anthem

In cannon, his character is known for being sly and manipulative, not really something his cc self is known for

And when he's written as a villain in aus, both of these are incredibly prominent parts of his character, to the point where his usual power is being able to command people with his voice (side note I was watching a video and the guy kept saying juice so I typed that instead of voice kekw)

Tommy, with his c and cc selves felt like he could through the entire spectrum of emotions so he felt so much more malleable. There is so much projection going on with tommy. And I say this as an ex-tomnyinnit author. So so so much projection.

You are absolutely bang on there. So yeah, we use different words probably cause we see different things in tommy based on how the both of us perceive ourselves. Me, I see loyalty as his core trait, you see resilience. Both are correct, but they come at us differently

(side side note, having written him will probably give me a load of bias of his character since I wrote him in a very specific way. Not a lot of cannon, I've written dozens of five and maybe 5 of those are cannon lmao)

for me itwas mostly funny people insisted they were writting like about the characters and it would be like a streamer AU and the characters name's were the characters but idk, sbi minus techno lived in england yknow? atp there were some people i rlly wanted to tell to their faces that they were writting RPF and that there was nothing wrong with it they just had to own it ...

but then again there's the discussion as to how you concretely make those divides when the characters started as perfect mirrors of the ccs

im rewatching doomsday (comps of all povs of course) and. yeah i just.. feel bad for the lmanburgians. i dont know how i could just. say these people deserved it, when they all sound, panicked and desperate and so so fucking sad. long long ramble under the cut as i recount the events and pick out a bunch of little things

even the day before then is painful. ranboos panic room. ranboo and tubbos talk (tubbo admitting that hes wrong, saying he believes that history is repeating itself and trusting ranboo because he believes in his loyalty), fundy showing the ring toss. tubbos surprise at being told to kill dream before stating that quackity would be in control if he didnt (god, did he plan to fail?). tommy being so so excited. everyone playing ring toss and cheering on jack. tommy still believing in tubbo. tubbo panicking. ranboo and tommy and techno talking, ranboo giving them info. dream placing walls and quackity instructing tubbo on where to kill dream. dream lying about the community house. the entire community house debacle. just, everything.

and then doomsday itself. having to frantically get there because it started early, tubbo only having diamond armor to protect him, fundy standing still after he sabotaged them. tubbo and ranboos genuine despair about the apiary.

tubbo eventually going nonverbal and actively putting himself in danger, not even moving away from techno at first and getting in the way of the firework launcher. tubbo trying to save tommy from the fireworks, ponks broken "dont come over here!" after she was trying to save his cat, tommys face falling and desperate attempts at convincing techno, ranboo going "its all gone", niki spiralling and silently burning down the tree, quackitys pure anger. all the death messages.

jack going "what is there left to protect", tommy brokenly trying to accept that its gone as tubbo and quackity blankly do accept it. jack going "i lost everything again". tommy desperately trying to understand dream, on the verge of tears as he asks why dream didnt just hurt him. his low health and food as hes unable to do anything anymore, his quiet gasp as he spots ghostbur, tubbos tiny shake of his head when dream says dream and tommys story wont be over.

tubbo and quackity breaking the repeaters. ghostburs "i didnt even know we were fighting". ghostbur finding out phil let friend die, hes pained "phil? but i- i gave, i gave phil to look after. and dream found me friend, and technoblade said we were friends", tommys pained talk about technoblade. "we were never his friend. to him, all of this was just an act of politics, an act of clout and a-a social ladder, and you won't remember. tubbo you will, and to you big q, this was a friendship. but to technoblade, this was a ladder. and techno climbed to the tippity talk. do you wanna know the only way you can go? on the ladder? -- and once you reach the top of the ladder tubbo, you can only go down."

quackity asking to sing the anthem again, him strumming as ghostbur sings (and tubbo and tommy joining in). ghostbur forgetting the second verse because it blew up. quackity remembering it, them stumbling through it. tommys "tubbo? im so so sorry", tubbos quiet "its okay." the four all singing together. tubbo looking at the lava with an ender pearl in his hand, tommy correcting quackity and going "our l'manburg". ghostburs speech about friend, about people not taking him seriously just because he has memory loss.

meanwhile.. phil and techno were laughing. cracking jokes. phil mocks them as he spawns withers on the apiary, going "ohhh noo not the bees!". techno shouts at tommy and shoots at him and tubbo. he kills jack and doesnt even notice that it was one of his lives lost. jacks death itself proves that it doesnt take any particular intent, doesnt have to mean anything to the killer. techno and phil were willing to kill people. it would be foolish of them to act as if there were no risks in the terms of canon lives, especially with phil. phil doesnt take ghostbur seriously, treats his despair as an opportunity to drill in a lesson. the most either of them lost was some of the dogs and used up potions, fireworks, and wither skulls

and then theres dream. dream whose been harming the l'manburgians since the beginning, who had taken tubbo hostage, offered eret a chance to betray them all, who had been the man in tommys walls and offering money to tubbo and jack to try and get them to destroy things, who tried to get tommy to kill tubbos villagers. dream, who took tommys discs over and over, who killed tommy twice in one day, who stopped caring about his friends that loved him and were so so loyal. dream, who helped schlatt and pushed wilbur deeper into his spiral, who even then tried to manipulate tommy.

dream, who helped destroy l'manburg the first and second time, who took advantage of tubbo so he could have a premeditated kidnapping of tommy. dream, who abused tommy, physically, psychologically, emotionally. dream, who degraded tubbo and had taken ranboos memory book (which btw, since ranboos memory loss counts as a mental disability with the memory book as his aid, thats dream taking the thing that aids ranboo in dealing with his disability).

dream, who had been the reason l'manburg was created. dream, who got to destroy l'manburg three times. dream won. and techno and phil dont regret it, dont care.

maybe l'manburg was never meant to be. and sure, it started with stealing and an attempt to monopolize on potions but. that wasnt even l'manburg then, was it? it was just wilbur and tommy having fun. l'manburg came after. after the police hurt them. l'manburg started as a silly little revolution, led by a naïve man who thought he could win wars by saying no. it was a place for a family, a place for them to escape from dream. it was a place to try and escape the harm of those outside the walls. it was meant to be safe, even if those against them made it hard to be. it was made from love. it was meant to be happy. it was a symphony, however unfinished.

so. i don't know. i just feel, bad. they never really won, did they? tragedy after tragedy, death after death, destruction after destruction, betrayal after betrayal, hurt after hurt. and now what's left of them, really? out of the founders, erets doing the best and even shes doing awful, forever trying to make up for what he did. tubbos paranoia led him to developing nukes in a desperate attempt to stay safe, because he was taught to stay quiet and keep his emotions to himself, because his death was "justified", because nukes and walls and weapons are the only way he can feel safe anymore.

tommy went through months of abuse, lost all of his lives and suffered upon coming back, suicidal but unable to bring himself to do it because limbo is worse, feeling lost and like he has no family anymore other than wilbur, who he knows is hurting him but cant bring himself to leave, who loved lmanburg so so dearly and only wanted a home, still doesnt have one (tommy from everywhere, tommy from nowhere at all). niki who loved lmanburg and wilbur so much that it hollowed her out and made her bitter and shes so used to being spoken over that all she can think to do is raise her voice and get pissed, who cant see wilbur as a good person anymore because shes hurt and hasnt truly recovered and she doesnt know how to cope without being angry.

jack manifold feels forgotten, hes lost all his lives and crawled out of hell and no one truly noticed, he doesnt even believe that niki really cares, hes desperate and has made his purpose to be spiteful and angry because he cant deal with the emptiness that comes when he realizes theres no point. fundys desperate to have friends, family, a partner, anyone thatll love him, anyone thatll keep him safe, slowly killing himself with cigarettes and disowned because of giving too little too late, because he was too little too late.

and wilburs lost himself. spiraling, paranoid. a young, naïve man who wanted to fight swords with words, who wanted to impress his father, who wanted a nation of his own to feel safe, who was so effected by erets betrayal that he cant trust anyone but himself, whose possessive nature eats him from the inside out, desperate for control and unable to let go of the only person he knows loves him unconditionally

all because outside forces kept pushing, kept destroying, kept ruining them and hurting them and traumatizing them and taking away their homes and pets and loved ones. and i just. cant feel happy for the ones that hurt them, i cant feel victorius, triumphant, any of that. i just feel bad that the l'manburgians never got to be a family. i know they arent the best people but shit, i love them anyways, love them because theyre flawed and because theyre *people*, people who tried so so hard and got pushed so so much and. fuck, i cant be happy that the people who loved nature and play fought and laughed by campfires and read poetry and re-enacted theatre and loved each other and wanted to *live* (even if they were willing to die, if it meant giving everyone else a chance).. lost. they lost.

canonical years of work down the drain in one day. records of history gone, now only remembered in full by a traumatized teenager who was taught not to talk about his negative emotions, and even he misremembers some parts. they didnt even lose fairly. they had no chance. they couldnt have prepared for withers, for tnt rain, for the hounds. they were poor, weaker than their opponents, sabotaged by one of their own. thats.. tragic.

doomsday was a tragedy. i cant agree that it was deserved. i cant agree that they had it coming, that they deserved to lose homes and pets and limbs and lives and land because they werent the greatest people around.

a small country of less than 10 people (at both creation and destruction) now a giant crater in the ground, remnants of a parisitic egg taking over the land. and it wasnt even lost fairly. three people were stronger than an entire nation, even with all of its allies. two anarchists working with an abusive tyrant. so, no. doomsday wasnt deserved. people dont deserve tragedy. there were better ways, i truly cant be happy that the way chosen was violence. i cant.

l'manburg's citizens deserved better. they really did. the ends dont justify the means. and god, am i fucking tired of "justice". if justice means choosing violence over love and respect and caring about those less strong than you, i dont wanna hear about it. fuck that man, id rather love and be loved than constantly give a shit about making up for hurting others by getting hurt, thats stupid and cruel and i cant see it as okay on a moral level. not when the people that got hurt deserved to be loved and cared about and protected and *talked to* instead of constantly shot down.

of course for the narrative i can enjoy violence and characters getting hurt and i do like how "real" it all is, the despair and dissonance in tone and how terrifyingly messy it all is. out of story perspective- honestly rather cool even if it makes me feel bad. in story perspective- holy fucking shit no that wasnt deserved and god i hope everyone hurt will be able to heal and learn to love and be loved again because thats such a terrifying thing to go through. from a detached pov i can appreciate the insight into everyone involved and i like the plotlines that came from it, but from a compassionate pov i just wish the l'manburgians were allowed to be happy and treated as equals so they didnt have to go through all of this

Anyways YES OFC!!! This is pretty summarized so I recommend watching vod :D also I watched tubbo’s pov so I may have missed a few things from techno’s or eret’s part

[THIS IS LONG SORRY]

Tubbo starts off stream saying he’s a bit of a mess right now, he talks about not having belongings and no one and then talking about how Snowchester was supposed to be a safe haven but ended up being a wasteland

Techno eventually arrives and they see the message from eret in the house and say they’re going to beat up eret for information of Michaels location

Techno gives tubbo the axe ranboo gave him to borrow and they talk about Ranboo and Michael and other stuff until eventually they arrive at Eret’s castle

Eret explains to them that he was trying to protect michael but trusted someone he shouldn’t have and that sam was supposed to make michael a room that tubbo could visit, but sam took him

Tubbo says that if he finds out he’s lying, he’ll kill him but they end up trusting him so Eret joins the group, eventually Techno says that tubbos rocking with 2 people who have murdered him and tubbo asks if this is an elaborate plan to leave him to his death

Tubbo asks for an apology, and Techno says that he’s been thinking about the festival and that he’s sorry meanwhile Eret says that what he did was a mistake and that he is sorry for it

Anyways they arrive at Sams home and tubbo says he’s in the anger stage, they talk for a bit and eventually Sam asks why Tubbo is with two people who killed him which he responds with saying that it’s in the past and that Sam kidnapped his child and killed his husband so he’s in no position to talk

Sam tries to explain that he’s making a safer place for Michael but Tubbo says that’s not for him to decide

They ask what Ranboo did to be put in the prison, but Sam fears it’s not going to matter for them so they start trying to kill Sam but as Sam asks them to stop they tell him to take off all of his armour

Sam takes them to where he was keeping michael, beside tommys grave at the back of his house and he explains that he needed Michael to control Ranboo to control Techno to stop techno from breaking Dream out

Techno says Tubbo should decide what to do with Sam seeing as Ranboo was Tubbos husband which ends up on Tubbo deciding that death is too good for Sam and that he deserves to be destroyed by his own creation, being put in Pandoras Vault

After a bit of discussing and fighting Sam lets them into the prison and gives them Ranboos stuff, which tubbo takes (Tubbo also takes ranboos “do not read” book but decides to not read it)

They take Sam to the main cell, finding a weird waiver with symbols along the way and Sam starts acting a bit suspicious, asking if it’s midnight

Turns out that the warden keys reset at midnight so they are trapped in with him but Eret manages to blow open one of the doors so they can leave

They leave eret behind to activate the portal and he tells them to teleport him back to his tower with the stasis chamber he has

Techno and Tubbo walk by lmanburg where tubbo sings the beginning of the national anthem and eventually they bring eret out of the prison and then set out to save michael

Techno offers for tubbo to move into ranboos house on the way back to which tubbo agrees

They see ghostboo at his house and they tell ghostboo that they’ve brought michael home which he is thankful for

They get michael into ranboos house and agree that they (Eret Techno and Tubbo) now like each other

the accidental beautiful symbolism of dream smp: l’mantree isn’t real

first pointed out by @kateis-cakeis, the l’mantree is one big lie. the tree got its renown by being the only tree in lmanberg untouched by war, a piece of history generated at the inception of the dream smp, withstanding the test of time. wilbur gave it its name under this assumption, allegedly noticing the same tree on a screenshots of the naturally generated dream smp vs the dream smp then Eret posted on twitter. yet we can clearly see that this tree has been planted by a player’s hand. that beautiful irony is really reflective of lmanburg as a whole. lmanburg never was a place where men could emancipate the brutality of their rulers. it was an illegal drug van whose first president was a self appointed autocrat. for the longest time, the exclusion of noneuropeans was one of its major principles. it wasn’t founded on battling tyranny, it was founded on exclusion, yet wilbur is incredibly adept at propaganda; in the flowing phrase of the indepedance, in drawing on the aesthetics of hamilton and pulling the audience’s heartstrings for the underdog, in the lyrics of the anthem. take a critical look back at the nation’s history: wilbur was a self appointed autocrat and tried to hold a fraudulent election where he was the only one people could vote for, a common dictator tactic, yet failed so hard a different dictator rose to power. after schlatt was displaced by violent revolution, tubbo was appointed by the nation’s first autocrat, wilbur. (though, to be fair, tubbo convened with his cabinet often and wanted to hold an election, but that speaks more to tubbo’s character than it does to the founding ideals and structure of lmanberg as a whole)

this just makes niki burning the lmantree so much more poignant. niki’s character has been lashing out from her trauma, her time trampled and ignored as a person under citizenship of lmanburg and the endless bloodshed and violence on the smp as a whole, and the fact her first act of rebellion was dismantling a piece of propaganda, a symbol as empty as the promises of freedom lmanberg offered, is just so beautiful.

lmanburg, a nation founded on drugs and freedom and war and family, doomed to fail from the beginning, from the very first time wilbur sang their anthem. a nation doomed to a history of war and death.
